jaafar jackson
Primed for stardom, Jaafar Jackson is ready to make his mark in music. With his debut album, Famous, out later this month, we talked to the rising singer about what’s to come. words by VANESSA SALLES photo by JOURDYNN JACKSON
Take us back to the beginning; though music is in your blood, what was the moment where you decided you wanted to pursue it as a career? What’s that journey been like for you? When my dad started taking me to the studio around the age of 13, he showed me the process of creating a song from scratch and seeing that really inspired me to want to learn how to play piano and start writing music. I kept practicing and learning as much as I could and it’s been such an incredible ride for me. Tell us about your newest single, ‘Got Me Singing’ – what’s the story behind the song? “Got Me Singing” is a story about having a crush on girl who you’ve been waiting to get a moment with and she finally calls you wanting to see you and you start thinking of all the things you want to happen. She plays hard to get at times but you tell her she’s worth the wait and at the end of the day, she has you singing. How did you know it was the perfect track to serve as your debut single? I was deciding between two songs on which to debut first but I went with “Got Me Singing” because it made me want to dance and had a nice up-tempo summer feel to it. It just felt right. Any memorable moments while writing/ recording it? I’m always having a fun time in the studio while creating so the energy is always great. The Dum Dums on the hook came from me goofing around in the booth but it sounded good so we kept it!
What kind of vibe/sound should be expected from your debut album, Famous? I’d say it’s a world sound but you can expect a few different sounding records. Ballads, uptempo, feel-good music. What’s the creative process been like for you while putting the album together? The creative process has been amazing for me. That’s my favorite part! It’s a lot of hours in the studio but I’m really proud of how things came out. I’m already looking forward to getting back in and creating more. Who are you loving in music lately? Who would you love to work with? I listen to a lot of different artists that range from old school and today’s music. Currently I’ve been listening to artists like Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Kanye West, Daniel Caesar, Jakob Ogawa, and many more. When it comes to stage presence, which artist(s) are you inspired by? Bruno Mars is an artist that has a great stage presence and knows how to put on a show. He really entertains and I’m inspired by that. Any special message for your fans? I can’t wait for you guys to hear the album and see the upcoming music videos that I’ve been working really hard on. I’m so excited that my first project is finally coming out and I hope you all enjoy it!

williams
With a sound and style that’s uniquely her own, Dana Williams deserves a top spot on all your favorite playlists. We talked to the singer/songwriter about her latest release, creative process and more: words by VANESSA SALLES
Tell us about your latest single, “Holiday” - what’s the story behind it? I wrote “Holiday” as an expression of selflove and realizing that it’s better to be alone than be in a turbulent relationship. I wanted the music video to be fun and pretty so the empty pink pool was perfect. It’s one of my favorite videos because it reflects the song’s light melody and heavy production with the soft pink visuals and dark twist at the end. Any memorable moments while writing/ recording it? This is the first song I released with Alex Da Kid, who is producing my upcoming album. It was such a fun process and I learned so much. I wrote so many songs and can’t wait to share them! Typically, what’s the creative process like for you? I feel inspired by being in a safe comfortable space - so normally, I like to write in my bed. When I’m writing in a studio, I like to burn Palo Santo. Then, I start by playing my guitar and coming up with a chord progression that I like, and then the chords will sort of dictate the mood of the song and I’ll write lyrics and melody on top of it.
How would you describe your personal sound? My personal sound is all over the place, but I think it is R&B, soul, jazzy folk. Who are you loving in music lately? Who would you love to work with? I’ve been listening to Snoh Aalegra, Joy Crookes, Emily King, Peter Collins, Jessie Reyez, Jazmine Sullivan, and Cautious Clay. I’d love to work with any of them! What’s on your bucket list for the rest of the year? For the rest of the year I am looking forward to shooting more videos and putting out some more new tunes. I’m so excited! With a growing social following, what’s the best way for fans to get your attention online? I try to read and reply to as many posts as possible, but I absolutely love when I see fan posts of covers, lyrics, dance or art inspired by my songs. It really makes my day! Any special message for your fans? I’d just say that whatever it is that you are doing, never give up!

weslee
If WESLEE isn’t already on your radar, allow us to introduce you to your new faves. Comprised of Emma and Josh, the up-and-coming duo’s unique blend of pop and R&B will have you hooked from start to finish. words by VANESSA SALLES photo by SERGIO NECOECHEA
Take us back to the beginning; when did WESLEE become more than just an idea? We had been writing a lot with and for other artists and I think we had both just hit a wall and were a little bit burnt out. We cancelled a session we were supposed to have and then we wrote ‘Gassed’ that night, so I guess that is really what started it all. Everything else has followed form there! What can you tell us about your newest single, ‘London Love’? What’s the story behind it? Emma: ‘London Love’ comes from a real place. I live in LA now so I’ve had my run-ins with American guys… but there’s just something about a London boy that gets me every time. This is a love song in a way, not necessarily to the guys but to London itself! What has the reaction been like from listeners? Everyone can relate to the song in some way. Whether you’re from London or anywhere else, there’s a piece in there for you. Any memorable moments while writing/ recording it? When Josh first started making the beat, it sounded like something you’d hear in a club in Berlin haha! We were almost going to scrap
it but I’m happy that we didn’t! What’s the creation process usually like for you? We don’t really do the long distance thing where we’d send ideas/songs back and forth… at least not when we are starting something new. We like to start ideas when we are in the same place! Basically, we try and capture whatever mood or vibe we are in at the time and turn that into a song. Who are you loving in music lately? Who would you love to work with? Working with Summer Walker would definitely be a vibe! When it comes to stage presence, which artist(s) are you inspired by? Lizzo definitely takes it to another level. I think I need to take up the flute, ha! What’s on your bucket list for the rest of the year? We’d like to keep writing/releasing music, create visuals, and play some shows. Any special message for your fans? Thank you for listening and continuing to support us! Lots more on the way!

denim richards
A fan-favorite on Freeform’s Good Trouble and Paramount Network’s Yellowstone, Denim Richards’ on-screen presence is undeniable. We talked to the rising actor about his time on set, what’s to come, and more: words by VANESSA SALLES photo by SERGIO NECOECHEA
Let’s talk Good Trouble - how would you describe your role as Elijah? Elijah is a very interesting character. He and Gael were deeply in love in college, but unfortunately, were not able to make it work! They went their separate ways to focus on their careers and now that Elijah is poppin’ as a celebrity fashion designer, he feels like there’s still a missing piece in his life. So, he’s back to re-capture the love that got away. Elijah has a long road ahead of him in order to gain back Gael’s trust but he doesn’t care how long it takes! He wants what he wants and he’s willing to do whatever it takes to get him back! Any memorable moments from filming season 2 that you can share with us? There were many memorable moments this season but the first one that comes to mind would probably be episode three, when Gael & Elijah share their first kiss! For me, it was very intense because it was the first time I had ever had an on-camera kiss, let alone a same-sex kiss! All I remember is feeling so anxious the night before and not sleeping a single minute because I was just anticipating this scene. When it was time to shoot, we ended up having some technical difficulties and had to push the scene to the end of the day… which meant another ten hours of anxiety, haha! Of course, when we finally shot it, we had no problems! The cast and crew make you feel so comfortable and Tommy [Martinez] is absolutely phenomenal so it really was a walk in the park! What can you tell us about what’s to come on Yellowstone? Oh man, season two of Yellowstone is crazy! The awesome part about this season is that all of the characters are already established and so now we can just get into the meat and bones! The Dutton Ranch is facing tribal leaders, multinational corporations, family drama, and all of these emotional demons, so the audience is in for such a wild ride! The only thing I can say is strap up and let’s go to work! Working alongside Kevin Costner, are there any
valuable lessons you’ve learned during your time on set? Absolutely! Kevin is a walking master class! I think the first thing that you appreciate about him is his attention to detail. He knows where every camera is, what the camera is shooting on, and what part of his body is on which camera angle! He really is a technician. I love and appreciate how much he still loves the art of acting and his willingness to go out of his way to talk to you about your character and run lines. It really is so refreshing to be around someone of his caliber who has been at the top of his game for 4 decades and see that he is still working on perfecting his craft! He is the gold standard and I am so blessed to have the opportunity to see it all up close and personal. Tell us about your production company, LFP! What kinds of projects catch your eye? Yes, Lazer Focus Productions! The projects that catch my eye are usually ones that have a deep emotional storyline. I have always loved dramas and so I’m always attracted to stories about people in situations and circumstances that have defied the odds and have risen to the top! I think it’s important to promote the strength of the human spirit. You’re also involved in various charities; how important is it to you to work with them? For me, working with charities is probably the most important thing that I do. One of my biggest goals in life is to uplift our youth, especially the ones that come from broken homes or communities that are not exactly “thriving.” I created the organization, Youth Empowering Success (Y.E.S), to focus on mentorship & empowerment. It’s my firm belief that, if you can get a child to recognize the potential that they carry inside of themselves, the sky’s the limit! Any special message for your fans? Believe in yourself! Understand that with the right mindset you accomplish all things! Wake up every day and challenge yourself physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually!

NAZANIN words by VANESSA SALLES
N MANDI photo by EMILYNN ROSE
Ready to make her mark in the music industry, Nazanin Mandi is the newest force in pop music. With her newly released single, “Forever Mood,” the sultry debut serves as an ode to love. “It’s a straight forward take on love -- nothing more, nothing less,” she says of the track. “It is about having the purest form of love, passion, respect, and compatibility with your significant other.” Perfect for a summer anthem, the repeat-worthy track showcases Nazanin’s inner hopeless romantic and is accompanied by stunning visuals to match. Inspired by her own journey of selfdiscovery, the singer’s mission in music is to stay as authentic as possible. “My musical journey has been a very slow yet productive process,” she says. “For me, it was all about gaining selfdiscovery, self-love, and self-reflection in order to arrive to this point with my music.”
THE DAILY SHUFFLE 16
When bringing the song to life, Nazanin made sure to represent her artistry in a way that felt right and true. “A memorable moment in the creative process for me was finding my sound,” she reveals. “It took years for me to get to a place where authenticity was 100%. Before that, something always felt off. It’s amazing to finally live in this moment and know my truth and what I want to sound like as an artist.” Though ‘Forever Mood’ is Mandi’s debut on the music scene, music has always been apart of her life. “With the exception of people who are close to me and supporters that have been rocking with me for years, no one knew that I was a singer,” she explains. “The reaction to my music tends to be shocking as it’s unexpected. However, ’Forever Mood’ is a vibe and to see people deeply feeling it makes all the hard work worth it.” As for the goals she’d like to accomplish in the music industry, Nazanin’s focus is simple. “At the end of the day, I hope my music inspires others to go for it and reach for their dreams,” she says. “A deep fear of failure and judgment almost held me back from pursuing this project, but I did not let those false feelings defeat me or stop me from living my lifelong dream. If I can do it, so can you, trust.” With new releases on the horizon, Nazanin assures fans that the wait won’t be long. “There will most definitely be a second single,” she gushes. “In fact, I am incredibly anxious and excited to release it. It’s going to be a banger!” Best described as multi-talented, Nazanin also shines on the big screen. “Acting is my number one passion,” she explains. “I feel free, inspired, and liberated with every acting opportunity I receive. Recently, I guest-starred on the iconic show “The Young and the Restless,” and earlier this year I wrapped a horror film called “Dreamcatcher.” I also starred in my first leading role in the film, “The Last Conception,” which will be released next year. I have more projects in the works and am so excited for everyone to see them!”

THE DAILY SHUFFLE 18
19
Never one to shy away from voicing her opinions, Nazanin’s newly launched podcast, Ladies Like Us, is the perfect way to stay connected. “Everything about the show happened very organically,” she said. “The idea was brought to my attention one day and I knew I had the perfect co-host, my cousin, Nadia Moham. Nadia is my ideal juxtaposition; we are opposites in many ways but still compliment one another beautifully. I could not and would not have done this without her by my side. I can’t wait for everyone to hear all the things that we have in store for the future episodes!” With mental health being a top priority, Nazanin makes sure to carve out time from her busy schedule to take care of what’s important: herself. “In order for me to be clear and levelheaded, I must make time for my well-being,” she says. “Time management is my best friend. I work out at least five days a week, read, hike, get facials, and spend time with the ones that mean the most to me.” With over a million followers on social media, Nazanin makes sure she keeps her life unfiltered and shows her true self. “It’s so important for us to speak our truths, whatever those may be,” she says. “In this day and age of social media, there are a lot of smoke n’ mirrors out there. However, in reality, we are all going through something. No one is perfect and it is ok to be vulnerable in how we present ourselves. It took me a long time to get to this point, but I am so happy that I did.”
THE DAILY SHUFFLE 20
sara thompson
Having quickly become a fan favorite on the latest season of The CW’s The 100, Sara Thompson has cemented herself as one to watch. We talked to the actress about her role and memorable times on set! words by VANESSA SALLES photo by CALVIN LEE JOSEPH
Let’s talk The 100! What is it about the show that drew you in and made you want to be involved? When I first heard about the opportunity, I was very excited! Not only because it is a fantastic show, with extremely exciting characters, but it is also one of my mom’s favorites! Once I caught a glimpse into Josephine’s character, it was really a no-brainer for me to take her on. For those who haven’t watched season six, how would you describe it? There’s a lot of introspection and selfdiscovery. Not only does Clarke have to face her demons but many other characters have to face the things they have done head-on as well. Self-growth is something I took away from the entire season. What’s been your favorite part about portraying Josephine? Josephine is a complex character who really shakes up the dynamics of the core cast. She is ruthless, determined and dedicated to doing what’s best for herself and her people, no matter the cost. Josephine becomes known as quite the sociopath… but of course, not if you ask her. She is smart, curious, correct and cheeky. She’s awesome… just ask her. My favorite part about portraying Josephine was finding the humanity in her actions. The way she can tell you to “go to hell, but enjoy the trip” is endlessly entertaining. Any memorable behind the scenes moments from filming that you can share with us? Eliza and I both happened to be super sick during the bulk of our scenes together. We would have coughing fits between takes and became best friends with our hot water
bottles. Being on set has a special way of turning the worst of days into the best. We bonded over our symptoms and it felt like we were, in fact, the same person. Some days were hard but I doubt either of us would go back and change it. Working with the show’s original cast, were there any valuable lessons you learned on set? I believe that every project comes with a new set of experiences and loads of lessons. Walking onto the 6th season of a show can be very intimidating as it is like a welloiled machine already. Every single person I encountered made me feel like I had been there the entire time. Most importantly, I learned to always help out the newbie and show them the ropes! When you’re not busy on set, what are you usually up to? Obviously, auditioning is number one… but spending time with my family, friends and puppy really keep me going! You can usually find me doing little art projects, fun photo shoots, making homemade short films, the list goes on. I enjoy being creative! When you think of your ultimate dream role, what comes to mind? There is a long list... I really want to do it all and jump to every edge of the spectrum. With that being said, if I’m giving one consistent answer, I’d say that my dream role would be Carrie Bradshaw. Any special message to fans/ viewers? Just a big ol’ thank you and I hope you’ve enjoyed the show! THE DAILY SHUFFLE 22
daan creyghton words by VANESSA SALLES hair & make up by GARRET GERVAIS photo by BEN DUGGAN styling by DANYUL BROWN
Starring on Nickelodeon’s Hunter Street, Daan Creyghton’s delivers some of the show’s best one-liners. We talked to the young actor about his time on set, what’s to come and more:
Let’s talk Hunter Street! What is it about the show that drew you in? When I first auditioned for the role of Sal, I didn’t know it was for Nickelodeon! They kept all the project details under wraps for the most part. In the chemistry test, I experienced how much fun it was to play with other young actors like myself. After that final session, I was even more excited than before to be working alongside people I enjoy so much. How would you describe your role as Sal? What’s been your favorite part about portraying him? Sal is a heartfelt and naïve boy who is extremely intelligent. He loves to experiment and has a solution to almost every problem you could imagine. In the second season, and even more in the third, Sal begins to come out of his shell and becomes much more social and confident in situations. I love challenging myself to play a boy whose heart is very similar to mine, but everything else about him is so different from who I am. Apart from that, I really enjoy all the technical solutions he comes up with and the gadgets he uses. What can you tell us about what’s to come in season 3? This season, the mystery will be bigger than ever. There are 30 episodes instead of 20 and there are more amazing characters! Of course, there will be lots of funny scenes as well. You truly don’t want to miss it! Any memorable behind-the-scenes moments from filming that you can share with us? There was a scene where my character needed
some drone footage. However, because it was challenging for me to fly a drone, one of the crew members tried to help. Funny enough, he got it stuck in a very high tree and before I knew it, every member of the cast and crew were throwing branches and twigs to try to get the drone unstuck. After a long 30 minutes, we finally got it out of the tree! When you think of your ultimate dream role, what comes to mind? Anything that falls into the category of dark or edgy drama… I would eventually love to play in something along the lines of Baby Driver and anything similar to early Leonardo DiCaprio, early indie films that Harris Dickinson played in, or even more recently, some of the works that Timothee Chalamet has worked on. What’s the best way for fans to get your attention online? It’s so much fun being able to engage with people who love the show! I try my best to engage with and talk to people when they comment on my posts and interact with me during my livestreams. Also, I see every edit and posts my fans make for me and I love every single one of them. If you see me in public, don’t be afraid to say hello! Any special message for your fans? Never give up and always pursue your dreams. Above all, if you want other people to believe in you, you must start with believing in yourself first. If you meet challenges and roadblocks in life, accept them as learning lessons and a part of the process and try to move forward… but never let it hold you back.

ebony obsidian
Set to star in Hulu’s highly anticipated series, Wu-Tang: An American Saga, Ebony Obsidian is a name you’ll want to get familiar with. We talked to the rising actress about her time on set, upcoming projects and more: words by VANESSA SALLES photo by EMMANUEL AFOLABI
Let’s talk Wu-Tang: An American Saga! What is it about the show that initially drew you in? I’m a 90’s baby. I grew up hearing my uncles and older cousins blasting Wu-Tang and spitting freestyles over the tracks. Though I was young, I remember the feeling they gave people. It wasn’t until I was older that I understood exactly why. I wanted to learn more about how they made their way to the World as the clan. With RZA writing, and many of the original members producing, Wu-Tang: An American Saga was the perfect way to do just that. What can you tell us about your character, Nia? What should viewers be expecting from her? Nia is a very grounded young woman. She’s in a relationship with Divine, the older brother of RZA. Though surrounded by a lot of chaos, she fairs pretty well with not getting caught up in it. Unfortunately for Divine, the same can’t be said about him. That’s where their trouble begin. Any memorable behind-the-scenes moments from filming that you can share with us? Too many! Ultimately, building with the cast and crew was the highlight. Everyone kept a light heart between some very tough scenes so jokes flew daily on set. Working with tons of incredibly talented directors and producers was also something special and new for me since this is the first show I’ve been featured on consistently. How would you describe the series and what’s to come? It’s raw. Nothing about the show is sugarcoated and that’s something I admired when I was reading script after script.
You’re also set to star in THE HUNT! Anything you can tell us about that project? I think I’d be hunted if I did, haha! What I can say is that David Weil created an epic and intriguing story that I myself can’t wait to see. When you think of your ultimate dream role, what comes to mind? Who would you love to work with? I don’t have one sole dream role, but a dream story list which is fairly endless. Fantasy and Sci-Fi is a realm I’ve always been drawn to. Stories deeply rooted in culture are especially enthralling. Also, stories and people that transcend time. The women I’ve been fortunate enough to inhabit were all at one point a dream role. I feel grateful for that. What’s on your bucket list for the rest of the year? This year has been amazing. I’ve already crossed out several things from my list. Travel has always been super high on my list, and I recently realized I’ve only been to about 11 states. So, I’m making it a personal priority to visit as many places as possible in my home country! May take a while though, ha. Any special message to fans/viewers? I’ve felt so much love on this journey from people all around the World. Thank you to everyone who continues to uplift me in my dreams. And remember, set goals. Reach them. No matter how long it takes. Nothing is impossible… even if no one has done it yet.

Killing it in the TV and music game, Quincy Fouse is a multi-talented star on the rise. We talked to the actor/musician about what he’s been up to and what’s up next: words by VANESSA SALLES
Tell us about your ‘I KNOW’ music video! What inspired its concept? What has the reaction been like from fans so far? This video came from the mind of my brilliant director, Barry Galperin! I had full trust in him to capture the concept of being lost and looking for love. The fans and I alike absolutely love how it came out! What’s the creative process usually like for you? It isn’t a static procedure, honestly. In its practice, it always varies. However, it’s always extremely rewarding and a feeling of home for me. What can you tell us about your current project, Son of the Ronin? What kind of vibe/sound can fans expect to hear from it? Son of the Ronin will be a project I experiment more with musicality and instrumentation, building sonic fantasy from a foundation of hip hop and soul. Who are you loving in music lately? Shae Universe, Kiana Lede, and Ejaaz Collins! When it comes to stage presence, which artist(s) are you inspired by? I gotta give credit to my dad for that one.
My pops was the one who guided me to that electric place that is performing live, where I was able to develop a personal relationship with how my body moves differently with each feeling I’m trying to manifest. Let’s talk Legacies! What is it about the show that initially drew you in? Initially, it was the audition. But in becoming a fan of the show, definitely just the raw spirit of The Originals! Any memorable behind-the-scenes moments from filming that you can share with us? Yes, a really fun one was where Chris Lee (Kaleb) and I taught Karen David how to Floss (the dance)! When it comes to your ultimate dream role, what comes to mind? I’d LOVE to play the live action Miles Morales. What’s on your bucket list for the rest of the year? RELAXING and keeping up with the show. Any special message for fans? I appreciate your respect and support, more content coming soon so stay tuned!
