A scene-stealer in every project she’s apart of, Devery Jacobs’ onscreen presence is undeniable. Starring as Sam Black Crow on the newest season of Starz’s American Gods and Lilith on Netflix’s original series, The Order, the actress’ portrayal of these bad-ass women is well worth the binge. words by VANESSA SALLES photo by JUSTINE NELSON
Let’s talk American Gods – what is it that drew you to the show/role? I love the world that Gaiman created: one that not only explores America’s melting pot of immigrants and their beliefs, but how Gods are actually just people who are surviving day-to-day. Plus, fitting Sam Black Crow into the story, who’s a funny, queer Cherokee character who I deeply identified with, made me an undoubtable fan. What can you tell us about Sam Black Crow? Sam is whip-smart, a bit guarded, a cynic but is also deeply curious about life and about Shadow, who she encounters on her journey in episode three of Gods. We get to see a softer side of Shadow for the first time as the pair form an unlikely kinship, in their own way. What should fans be expecting from this new season? This season, fans witness Shadow as he grasps a better understanding as to the war between gods that is approaching. The pace quickens, getting into the Shadow’s journey, but stays true to the stunning, acid trip-like cinematography and incredible performances by the talented cast. You’re also starring in Netflix’s The Order – what can you tell us about your role? For those who haven’t seen it yet, what should they be expecting? The fan response to The Order has been so incredible. The story follows Jack, a college student who pledges a secret order and lands in a war between werewolves and practitioners of dark magic. In the show, I play the bad-ass Lilith - a tough-minded young college student with a chip on her shoulder who could eat you for breakfast - literally. Because Lilith is also a werewolf, she’s a sworn opponent of The Order and will let
everyone know. What’s different about The Order is that it doesn’t take itself too seriously — its comedic dialogue is wildly entertaining and Lilith is quick with the comebacks. She was so much fun to play. When you think of your ultimate dream role, what comes to mind? My ultimate dream role would be playing my mom — I’ve never met anyone with more interesting stories and is so resilient in her survival. She is my dream role. What’s something you’re hoping to see more of? While I appreciate the movement toward diversity in film and television, the amount of women, LGBTQ+ people, and BIPOC as creatives behind the camera have not reflected that. Only when our stories are truly represented in front and behind the lens, can we claim to have diverse projects. Tell us about your Indigenous rights activism; how important is to you to use your platform to speak on things you’re passionate about? I grew up in Kahnawà:ke Mohawk Territory in the legacy of the 1990 Oka Crisis, so I am inherently political. Whether I was involved in film or not, I’ve always carried a sense of responsibility toward my community. I love film, and the fact that I have the opportunity to share our stories and create activism through art makes me incredibly thankful. Any special message for your fans? Niawenhkó:wa / thank you so much for the huge fan-casting movement, pushing me to play Sam Black Crow. It makes my heart so happy to know that fans of the book thought I should play Sam and I hope that my interpretation does her justice. Your continued support is not unnoticed, so thank you! jasmine words by VANESSA SALLES photo by KATE BELLM
With a voice as mesmerizing as the lyrics she sings, Jasmine Thompson is deserving of the top spot on all your favorite playlists. With a new EP releasing this month, the UK artist talked to us about her creation process and more. Tell us about your new EP, Colour! Any memorable moments when writing/recording it? I just remember feeling so eager to work on the songs. I remember the night before all the songs were going to the mix, Eg [White] and I stayed in the studio until 2am trying to finish ‘Take Care’. That song had so many twists and turns that it almost didn’t make the EP. But, we were determined to try our best and finish it in time, and we did!
we both feel like it connects to where we are, emotionally.
How would you describe the vibe/sound of this EP? I love having different textures, with bass, brass and whatever instruments are in reach. On this EP, I really enjoyed playing with different moods in each song. For example, in ‘More,’ we started the track with a very dark and moody vibe and then we slowly built it up towards a really positive last chorus, filled with string sections and layered vocals. I just enjoy the journey that each song takes; it’s such a good feeling when you can sit back and say that you have taken a song as far as you can.
Which songs off your EP are you most excited to perform live? Definitely ‘More’. I played a really small showcase the other month; I was on keys and 2 of my friends helped me play cello and violin. We saved ‘More’ for the last song, and I couldn’t stop smiling. I feel very proud about the whole EP and each song has a different emotional connection for me. I’m so excited to get out there and really let them live.
Is there a track that holds the most significance to you? Honestly, it’s hard to pick just one – all of these songs have very personal meanings to me. I actually love it when listeners can build their own meaning for a song, so I’d rather they do that and find their own ways to connect. What’s the songwriting process usually like for you? This EP was co-written by me and Eg White, and it’s just so easy to write together. Normally, I will come in with something on my mind and it’s not intentional that it turns into a song. Like most writers and producers, we start off by just having a coffee and a catch-up, and during that catch-up, we talk about whatever’s going on in life. When the time comes, we go to the piano or guitar and we just start turning melodies until
Should fans be expecting some live shows this year? Absolutely! I’ve already got some small shows lined up for April in London which I am super excited for. I’m still planning more shows for the rest of the year and I will definitely be trying to hit as many places as possible.
Overall, what do you hope fans take away from Colour? I just hope that they enjoy it, and that they connect to it. I honestly feel so excited about this EP and proud as well, which is something I have always struggled to feel. So, I just hope that they like it because it’s my baby. When it comes to stage presence, which artist(s) are you inspired by? I have always loved Florence and the Machine. She just looks so free and happy, I saw her perform in November and I cannot explain how much respect I have for her and her art. Any special message for fans? Thank you to everyone who has continued to support me while I disappeared for a year. Sometimes it’s good to take a step back and press the refresh button. Now that I am back, I feel so ready to be present and make art again that I hope fans can connect with. THE DAILY SHUFFLE

Fola EvansAkingbola
A fan favorite on Freeform’s Siren, Fola Evans-Akingbola is certainly one to watch. We talked to the actress about her onscreen evolution, potential storylines and more. words by VANESSA SALLES photo by FREEFORM/VU ONG
Let’s talk Siren – take us back to the beginning; what is it that drew you to the show? I was immediately intrigued by the idea of exploring what happens when myth becomes reality, and how the lives of everyday people suddenly get turned upside down. Mermaid and water goddess myths are universal and pop up in every culture because, in my opinion, they symbolize power, transformation and being of two worlds, among other things. Add the fact that they are often represented in the female form, I think humans are endlessly fascinated by that. What’s been your favorite part about portraying Maddie? I think Maddie is interesting because on the surface, she is very in control and put together. She puts everyone’s needs ahead of herself and has a bottomless well of love to give. However, that is often to her own detriment. I have loved exploring her dynamic with Ryn. Their relationship has been on such a journey; from season one, having to earn Ryn’s trust, to Season 2, falling in love with each other and Ben. How would you describe your character’s onscreen evolution since the first season? At the beginning of season one, we met Maddie Bishop and she was just starting to forge her own path: she was taking marine biology classes, working at the Marine Research Center, and having fun with Ben. However, the arrival of Ryn – a force of nature – threw everything Maddie thought she knew, up in the air. Through the first two seasons, I think Maddie has had to confront some hard truths about herself and her life patterns. She has a bit of a ‘savior complex,’ for one! I think now, in season two, her life has become wrapped up with this ineffable relationship with a mermaid and with trying to ‘fix’ Ben. I think in the process of trying to grapple with all these challenges, we’ve seen
Maddie, perhaps subconsciously, learn from Ryn about what it means to stand up for yourself and own your power. How would you describe Maddie’s dynamic with Ryn and Ben this season? The bond the three of them formed in season one is undeniable, and I think Maddie and Ben are both deeply connected to Ryn in their own separate ways, as well as in the trio... or throuple! This season, they’re all clearer about their feelings and are willing to gently explore them together. I think people will enjoy watching it all unfold. What kind of storylines do you think would be fun to explore for future episodes/seasons? I really enjoy exploring the learning exchange that happens between the humans and the mermaids. I would love to see even more of that happen over a long period of time. There is so much we can learn from the mermaids and their way of looking at the world, and of course there’s a lot they are learning with us. I think it would also be cool to see how mermaids would react if they surfaced in a different part of the world. What is interesting is that on this planet, there are endless permutations for how to ‘be human’ – Ryn is learning from people in Bristol Cove, but what if mermaids were interacting with a totally different culture, or even just a different group of people who think differently to how Ben and Maddie think. That would be cool to see. How does the cast like to bond, off-camera? Game night! We are all very competitive so our game nights become very rowdy. Monopoly is a sure fire way to bond quickly and see everyone’s true colors, haha! Any special message for your fans? Thank you so much for watching Siren. We all appreciate your support! THE DAILY SHUFFLE 12
A pop star in every sense of the word, Norwegian songstress Astrid_S is ready to make her mark. Having garnered over 1 billion streams with hit songs like “Hurts So Good,” “Think Before I Talk,” and “Such A Boy,” the artist is broadening her global fan base, day by day. “I’ve always loved music,” she says. “I grew up surrounded by music but I never really thought that it was something I could pursue as a career. When I ended up on Norwegian Idol at 16, that’s when I realized how much I loved performing. I loved everything about being on stage and writing music, so that’s pretty much when I decided that I could make this my job.” Fast forward to today, the 22-year-old’s sound has evolved with her. “If you listen to my earlier stuff, I think it’s easy to hear the development and maturity that my sound has gone through,” the musician says. “In the ways that I’ve grown as a person, I’ve also grown as an artist. The things I go through now are different than the things I would go through at 16; the lyrics and sound have changed but it still has the same heart at the center of it all.”
THE DAILY SHUFFLE 14
Best known for her genre-bending lyrics and catchy pop choruses, Astrid S has cemented herself as a rising star. “I want my songs to stand out and have that signature ‘Astrid’ sound that you can’t mistake for anyone else’s,” she says. “Recently, I’ve been really inspired by 80s music. Back then, songs had more personality – you could turn the radio on and know instantly who the artist was because everyone’s sound was so distinct. That’s what I’m trying to do with my music; I want to bring that back into today’s pop music.” Feeling right at home with a pen and paper, the singer/songwriter is constantly creating. “Songwriting is my closest friend,” she says. “I had an amazing experience recently that just reminded me how much I truly love it. I had something on my mind that I just couldn’t figure out how to turn into words. It had been awhile since I wrote by myself but eventually, I just tapped into this place where the words flowed right out. It felt great to connect with music in that way; it’s something that I love to do.” Inspired by all the women who are currently dominating the charts, Astrid’s always rooting for everyone’s success. “Right now, there are so many artists that I’m inspired by,” she shares. “I’m loving Ariana Grande and Sigrid’s new albums. They’re both killing it and I’ve also been inspired by Halsey; her live performances are so cool because you can really tell that she means every word that she’s singing. I’m always loving female artists and I wish that there were more female collaborations going on! It would be so cool to see that and it’s actually something I’d love to do in the near future.”
THE DAILY SHUFFLE 16
“
I learn so much from my fans. They’re all so smart, cool, and funny. I’ve come across the most kind-hearted people who just support me for who I am and it’s such a beautiful thing to see. I feel like they always have the answer to everything and so I go to them for advice on a lot of things. What I love most is that there have been so many friendships formed throughout the fan base and I love that people can connect with each other and that I can connect to them.”
THE DAILY SHUFFLE 18
Heading out on tour later this month, the singer is set to share the stage with fellow Scandinavian artist, Zara Larsson, on Larsson’s Don’t Worry Bout Me tour. “I’m so excited for tour,” Astrid gushes. “Fans should be expecting a good time and lots of energy in the live performances. I hope that I’m able to make people feel good about themselves and I just want everyone in the crowd to have as much fun as I’m having on stage. It’s going to be a great time and I’m excited to be on the road with Zara.” “My favorite part about tour is getting to perform new music,” she adds. “I hope to release a few songs before the tour and I can’t wait to see fans sing along with me. It’s always so much fun to perform and see people in the crowd recognize the songs and just have a good time with it.” Her secret to staying sane on the road? Keeping it moving. “I’ve realized that I feel a lot better – and happier – when I stay active,” she explains. “I used to stay in and sit around whenever I had any free time but now I actually do the opposite. My band and I love to explore the cities we’re in and we just run around with each other and stay active. I think that’s really important when I’m on a busy tour run and it’s definitely become a form of self-care for me.”
THE DAILY SHUFFLE 20
With an ever growing following on social media, Astrid S has formed a special bond with her fans. “Honestly, I learn so much from them,” she gushes. “They’re all just so smart, cool, and funny. I’ve come across the most kindhearted people who just support me for who I am and it’s such a beautiful thing to see. I feel like they always have the answer to everything and so I actually go to them for advice on a lot of things. What I love the most is that there have been so many friendships formed throughout the fan base and I love that people can connect with each other and that I can connect to them.” When it comes to career goals, Astrid S’ is simple: “I want this long-term,” she says. “I want to be able to have a long and sustainable career. In this industry, you never really know what’ll happen because it’s always such a rollercoaster. That’s why I’m always working and building my relationship with my fans. I want to make sure that I can stick around for years to come.” As for what’s up next, the singer’s been hard at work on finalizing her debut album. “It’s close to being finished,” she reveals. “I definitely want to take my time and make sure I’m happy with everything so that’s why it’s been such a process. I believe the album will be finished this year and then it’ll hopefully be released in the year to come. I’m excited for fans to hear it because I know they’ve been waiting for it.” For those eager to hear new music before the album’s release, Astrid’s got you covered. “There’ll definitely be new music releases before the album’s out,” she assures fans. “There’ll be new songs for tour and a few other surprises that will roll out throughout the rest of the year. It’s been a lot of hard work and I can’t wait to share it with the world.”

slowikowska
Starring in the newest season of FX’s comedy horror series, What We Do in The Shadows, Veronika Slowikowska is about to become your new fave. Having discovered her passion for acting at a young age, the rising star is making her mark both on and off screen. Let’s talk about your new show, What We Do in The Shadows! How’d you know you wanted to be involved with it? I’m a massive fan of the movie. So I knew who I’d get to work with and knew it would turn out hilarious. What can you tell us about your character, Shanice? Shanice is an awkward, sassy, nerd! Not far from me. Any memorable moments from set that you can share with us? We improvised lots! Coming from an improv background, I was in heaven.
What’s on your bucket list for 2019? Mostly boring work stuff...I think I want to try stand up! I also want to head over to Poland before the end of the year to visit my family. What are you loving on TV right now? Detroiters! What do you want to see more of? People being nicer to each other and themselves! Television wise...more good, funny stuff! And more women! Any special message for fans/viewers? Thanks for reading this! Check me out on Instagram @veronika_iscool!
What should viewers be expecting from these upcoming episodes? Flying, vampires and laughs! Tell us about your new web series, A Boy’s Memoir! What’s to be expected? The three young thespians are played by me and my two best friends. Check us out on Facebook/YouTube! You’re also a part of the 2019 Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival – what can you tell us about your troupe? Our troupe is called My Chemical Bromance and it goes hand-in-hand with the web series. We’re an “improv” troupe (everything is planned) with high energy and lots of song and dance numbers. It’s a lot of fun. THE DAILY SHUFFLE 24
casey deidrick
Best known for his roles on Eye Candy and Teen Wolf, Casey Deidrick has already established himself as a force to be reckoned with. Next seen on the highly anticipated CW series, In The Dark, the actor talked to us about what fans should be expecting. words by VANESSA SALLES photo by MAARTEN DE BOER FOR THE CW
words by VANESSA SALLES photo by BLANK
Let’s talk In the Dark – what is it that drew you to the show and made you want to be involved? I really loved the way the story was crafted. Nothing about this show is cookie-cutter. There was an arc to each character and levity, yet it had so much substance. I knew after reading the script that it was something special. The fact that 80% of the writers on this show are women is amazing. This is a show with so much diversity and hopefully will create conversations at home about alcoholism, depression, and relationships. What can you tell us about your role and what viewers can expect? I play Max Parrish. He’s fun, dodgy and a man with many appetites. He runs his own food truck, which is also a money-laundering front for a drug enterprise with his business partner, Darnell. When Max and Murphy first meet, he makes no allowances for her blindness and treats her like everyone else (that’s why she likes him). Ultimately, Max is there to help crack Murphy’s guarded vulnerability. Murphy brings him out as much as he brings her out. Any memorable behind-the-scenes moments from filming that you can share with us? The first scene I ever shot with Perry was at Max’s food truck outside of Toronto’s Roy Thompson Hall, which is probably one of the busiest places in Downtown Toronto. On my coverage, everything that could go wrong, did. A full-live band started playing, the light rail passed through on every take, and probably 3-4 ambulances... You couldn’t hear any of my dialogue, so thankfully Brain Dannelly (our director) let me reshoot my coverage on a different day in a different location! Overall, what do you want fans to take away from this series when they watch? I think fans will quickly understand that this is not your typical CW show. In the Dark is a drama about a blind woman investigating the potential murder of a friend, while also being a bit of a hot mess. It’s just so different. Murphy’s character is completely flawed, disabled beyond being visually impaired. And she will make you feel uncomfortable. I think people will see a little bit of themselves in each and every one of the characters on this show.
When you think of your ultimate dream role, what comes to mind? I’ve always wanted to play a NAVY SEAL. I just have so much respect for what they put themselves through physically and mentally. I also seem to gravitate more towards the darker roles. I’d love to work with Tom Hardy and Shia Lebouf one day; both actors make me feel something every time I watch them. When you’re not busy on set, what are you usually up to? I’ve been dealing with a lot, emotionally and mentally. Having severe depression for most of my life, I think I’m finally focusing on healing and exploring the things that Casey likes. I’ve been in romantic relationships for all of my 20’s, and so I really didn’t know who I was going into my 30’s. Now, I’m usually meditating or reading in my solitude. I’m obsessed with CrossFit and anything mentally challenging. I’ve been taking Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai classes. I love hiking with my dog. Love watching good films. I’m just trying to fall back in love with myself and feel comfortable in my own skin. With a growing following online, what’s the best way for fans to get your attention? I love when fans connect with me on a deeper level and share their story with me. I’m an open book when it comes to mental health and I know a lot of my fans can relate. I love seeing them get excited about something I’m passionate about. Any special message for your fans? I just want to say that I’m so very thankful to my fans and the people that continue to support me in my life. For making me feel like I have a safe space to talk about real shit with no judgments. This business is pretty brutal and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve wanted to give up, but thanks to my team, my friends, my family and my fans I’ve been able to tell myself, “Just keep going”, “Just one more day”.

kyanna simone simpson
If Kyanna Simone Simpson isn’t already on your radar, it’s time to change that. Set to star in the upcoming Netflix original series, Chambers, the 22-year-old actress is cementing herself as a talent to watch. words by VANESSA SALLES photo by MARC CARTWRIGHT
Congrats on your newest gig, Chambers! What is it about the show that drew you to the show and made you want to be involved? The entire premise of the show excited me! What immediately pulled me to the project was Yvonne’s story and personality. She is one strong willed and intelligent black girl! Fierce characters are my favorite, and Yvonne can definitely hold her own. Plus, I’m a total math geek, so playing a tech girl is the icing on the cake! What was your reaction when you found out you landed the role? I ran around my house screaming “I’m gonna be on Netflix, I’m gonna be on Netflix!!!!” What can you tell us about Yvonne and what viewers can expect to see from her? Yvonne is a total go-getter! She is extremely passionate about her family and friends’ wellbeing. You can expect her to whip out her tech skills on the spot whenever necessary. Any memorable behind-the-scenes moments from set that you can share with us? During my first week of filming, I almost fell into the pool while the cameras were rolling! So glad I dodged that! What does it mean to you to become apart of the Netflix family?
I feel like I am a part of an era! New media is such an important platform for film and television now. It’s an amazing feeling to be able to say I work with people that are making history. Let’s talk about your upcoming movie, Ma – what was it like to take on the teenage version of Octavia Spencer’s character? Sooooo cool! Big shoes to fill! What should viewers be expecting from the thriller? Get ready to be spooked out! Just when you think you know what is going to happen...BAM! Are you typically a fan of horror/thriller movies? I run to the theaters for every new horror film! I’ve always enjoyed the thrill. Never would have thought I’d be making them one day! When you think of your ultimate dream role, what comes to mind? I want to play Oprah Winfrey in her biopic! And it still blows my mind to know that she wants the same! Any special message for fans? Catch me on Netflix’s Chambers as Yvonne Perkins – coming soon! Also, don’t miss Ma when it hits theaters on May 31st!

kalama epstein words by VANESSA SALLES photo by BOBBY QUILLARD
Set to star on Netflix’s upcoming original series, No Good Nick, Kalama Epstein is definitely one to watch. From memorable set moments to current TV obsessions, the 18-year-old actor talked to us about it all! Let’s talk No Good Nick – what is it about the script that drew you to the show? First and foremost, this was the first sitcom script in quite a while to actually make me laugh out loud while reading it. The audition sides were infectious and hysterical. It wasn’t reliant on slapstick humor, and had an amazing wit to it. I wanted to be a part of this show so bad, and here we are! What can you tell us about Jeremy and what viewers can expect to see from him? Jeremy is an uptight know-it-all school politician with a plan for every beat of the rest of his life. At his core, he is a loving person who cares deeply about his family and the people he loves. But, he’s plagued by his untamed ego. When Nick shows up, it throws Jeremy for a loop. He then becomes dead set on seeking the truth about Nick! Any memorable behind-the-scenes moments from set that you can share with us? I’d say the moment before we went out to do our first live taping was my most memorable moment. The cast and our first and second AD collected together and formed a huddle. There was a quick prayer, something that transcended any one religion, and was just fueled by the love for the show and each other. It was beautiful moment, and was succeeded by a fantastic first show with tons of friends and family there supporting us. What was it like to work alongside Melissa Joan Hart and Sean Astin? Getting to work with people you look up to is already incredible, but when they happen to be truly great people, it makes for an entirely different experience. Sean and Melissa have created such a sense of warmth and comfort on set and I am constantly learning from them.
They also never treat me, Siena, and Lauren as nothing less than equals. They are the best TV parents I could ever ask for. When you think of your ultimate dream role, what comes to mind? This is a tough one. I’ve always had “dream roles” but, to be honest, with where I am currently, anything that provides me with a real challenge would be awesome. But, if we are talking dream job rather than dream role, I would absolutely love to work with Ari Aster or Robert Eggers. What are you loving on TV right now? I just finished The Haunting of Hill House and I really loved it. There are some hauntingly beautiful performances in that. The cinematography, set design, makeup, and direction are all breathtaking. I have also been watching Nathan For You, which is absolutely hysterical and one of the best and most interestingly structured reality-comedy shows. When you’re not busy on a set, what are you usually up to? I’m usually at home playing video games, hanging out with friends, playing board games, etc. I go to a parkour class once a week, and play Dungeons & Dragons every weekend! I’m also in the process of making a couple of short films, so I’ve been writing and planning for those. Any special message for fans? I really appreciate the fans of The Fosters and all the past projects I’ve been a part of, that have stuck with me and supported me. I’m so excited for everyone to watch No Good Nick; so many people put so much love and hard work into this show, and we cannot wait to share it with the world!
