A scene-stealer on Hulu’s Light as a Feather, Haley Ramm is a force to be reckoned with. Discovering her love for the craft at an early age, the actress has quickly become a fan favorite in every project she’s involved with. “It all pretty much started at the age when you start walking and talking,” she laughs. “I started taking acting classes and eventually it resulted in my family moving up to LA. It’s been a long journey but it’s been such a fun ride.” A mix of horror and supernatural, Light as a Feather is the show every horror lover needs to binge-watch. “I was instantly drawn to the show,” Haley says. “Honestly, I don’t think I realized how much I liked doing horror until I did a movie called Seven in Heaven. Coming off of that and it being one of the most recent things I’d just done, I just knew I wanted to do it again. It was a really cool experience doing Light as a Feather and playing the villain was what really did it for me; I’ve never gotten to explore so many sides to a character before.” Describing her onscreen persona, Haley explains that there’s more to her than what meets the eye. “I would describe Violet as a lost soul,” she notes. “She’s very damaged and misunderstood. It’s really easy to hate her because she’s doing all these evil things but I think she’s just been sucked into this game for so long. She’s lost who she is and she’s lost this part of her that would feel guilty about doing all these crazy things. She’s living in survival mode and I think it’s really interesting to learn about her backstory in the show.” With the first season ending on a cliffhanger, there’s a lot that Haley hopes to see get resolved. “I hope we get Henry back,” she laughs. “I’m dying to know what happened with him. I don’t even know where to begin thinking with that one. Our writer, Lee, threw us some major curveballs, especially with the ending, so it’s hard to imagine where the story could go from there. I love seeing what other people think because I’ve actually heard some pretty interesting theories so far.”

Though a second season has yet to be announced, Haley’s already excited about potential storylines. “I think Violet’s relieved that it’s all over,” she says. “I’m really curious to see, if we do a second season, what her relationship with McKenna is going to be like now that she’s carrying the curse. Things would definitely get crazy, that’s for sure.” With heavy moments onscreen, the actress recalls the set as one of warmth and laughter. “It was so much fun on set,” she gushes. “When you’re working with such an ensemble, it’s easy to be nervous because you don’t know everyone right away. The first night that the whole cast met, we just hit it off so well. It was such a relief knowing that the people you’re working with are going to have your back and be supportive of you. It’s definitely a lucky situation and I think our chemistry translates onscreen.” On the film front, Haley can be seen in the recently released drama, PIMP. “Working on that film was one of the most life-changing experiences I’ve had,” she says. “We were filming in the Bronx in the summer of 2016 and there was a lot of gun violence going on, which really resonated with the movie and hit everyone on set really hard. There was a night where Keke [Palmer] planned an open discussion in Harlem. She tweeted about it the day of and around 200 people showed up. Going with her and hearing people’s experiences and how the community wanted to come together and fix it was really amazing. The life experience was really interesting and getting to know Keke was incredible. I never got to work with somebody my age that was so incredibly serious about her character and it was fun to delve into it all with her. It just felt really safe because she’s such a strong woman, and so is our director, Christine. Even with all the crazy and serious subject matter, it felt like a protected and beautiful experience.” As for what’s up next, Haley plans to keep herself pretty busy. “I think I’m happiest when I’m busy,” she says. “I want the new year to be full of camping trips and road trips and lots of projects. This year has been so great and I’m excited to see what the new year brings.”

REILLY DOLMAN

words by VANESSA SALLES photo by LESLIE ALEJANDRO

A fan-favorite on Netflix’s Travelers, Reilly Dolman’s onscreen performance is well worth the binge. Instantly drawn to the role, the Canadian actor jumped at the opportunity to bring the complex character to life. “I hoped that becoming Philip could satiate a creative hunger in me,” he explains. “I also wanted to show that my potential as an actor is more than just the ‘dumb jock’ onscreen.” Three seasons later, it’s safe to say that Reilly’s proven himself to be quite the chameleon.

viewers are going to see a lot of that in the new episodes.” Promising a season of closure, the actor assures fans that Travelers’ return will definitely be worthwhile.

Recalling his time on set, Reilly credits the cast and crew for making it such a great work environment. “Everyone is very professional and impressively aware,” he gushes. “We joke around when the time is right but we work hard always. Everyone involved knows what they’re doing and that just makes you feel safe and supDescribing his role, the Travelers star reveals that he ported to do what it is that you need to do.” gravitated toward Philips’ humanity. “I grew up loving raw, gritty, realistic pieces of work that center around a With the show’s global success, the actor’s even found person’s humanity and that humanity in relation to oth- himself running into fans in different countries. “I’m er things,” he says. “I saw a lot of this in Philip and his always so surprised and flattered when someone recstory. EMERY KELLY

words by VANESSA SALLES photos by PATRIZIA MESSINEO

Primed for stardom, Emery Kelly is a name you won’t soon forget. Talented on all fronts, the 20-year-old entertainer can be found on stage, performing with Forever In Your Mind, and onscreen on Netflix’s Alexa & Katie. “When I first read the script, I was instantly drawn to the show,” he says. “I connected with Lucas and I loved the fact that he would always be there for his sister. Even though he has his self-absorbed moments, he has a genuine heart. He cares a lot about his sister and he’s always there to look out for her.” Promising more heartfelt moments between the siblings, Emery reveals that season two will deliver everything that viewers are longing for. “The relationship between Lucas and Alexa is really sweet,” he shares. “They’re quick to get at each other’s necks but they always end up on each other’s side. Season two will show everyone the whole nine-yards of emotions with those two.”

16

Describing his time on set, the actor credits the cast and crew for making work feel like it’s anything but. “The vibe is always really fun,” he says. “We’re all comfortable with each other and, it sounds cliché, but we’ve all become family. Everyone is super professional and we always make sure to get the job done while still having a good time. I’ve known Paris [Berelc] from the Disney family for close to five years now. It’s so cool that I got this opportunity to work on my first TV show and it just so happened to be with my friends. I also got to learn from Saved by the Bell’s Tiffani Thiessen and, let’s be real, she’s iconic.”

Streaming on Netflix, the show’s popularity rises day by day. “It’s been so interesting to see all the new fans,” he gushes. “Before the show came out, most people would know me by my music and Forever In Your Mind. Now that the show’s out, most people know me from Alexa & Katie, which is crazy. The awesome thing about Netflix is that people discover the show every day – it’s been so much fun to see all the new fans popping up! I appreciate everyone showing me support, especially the people that have stuck with me from the very beginning – they’ve seen me grow and evolve through every exciting project.”

“The fact that there are people out there that love what I do is unfathomable sometimes. I’m where I am because of them so I will always make it a point to let them know how grateful I am.” His safe space on set? “My dressing room,” he laughs. “Paris’ dressing room, too! Both places are my safe zones and it’s where I can just relax and be myself. I usually try to stay in character while I’m on set because it makes things easier but I always love when I can just let go. There’s been so many amazing moments on set and I think that viewers can see our chemistry onscreen, which is why they get so invested.”

Keeping busy with Forever In Your Mind, Emery assures fans that 2019 will be the band’s biggest year yet. “We just released a new song in October,” he says. “The boys and I have been hard at work in the studio so fans can definitely expect to hear new music in the new year.”

“The best way to describe the new music is by calling it real,” he adds. “It sounds vague but that’s truly what it is: it’s real and authentic. in and record everything, and let the producers decide what sounds best. That way, there’s no fighting and there’s no backlash. It’s all about communication because, at the end of the day, we’re all on the same page and we all want to make great music.” Citing the artists that inspire him, there’s one thing that stands out the most: stage presence. “There are so many performers that inspire me,” he notes. “Harry Styles, Justin Bieber, Shawn Mendes, and Jaden Smith are just a few. Their energy is what captivates me, especially Harry’s. His stage presence is something different and authentic; that’s what I try to do with my performances as well. I want to represent myself through the way I put on shows, which I did on tour this year. Being on the road was definitely a highlight because touring is one of my favorite things to do. It’s such a magical moment to be able to see all the fans in person and be able to talk to them.” When he’s not on the road, Emery keeps in touch with them on social media. “I always try to be interactive,” he explains. “I’m really good at checking my tagged photos, DMs, comments, etc. Even if I don’t get the chance to reply, just know that I see it all. The fact that there are people out there that love what I do is unfathomable sometimes. I’m where I am because of them so I will always make it a point to let them know how grateful I am – I don’t see any other way to do it.” His special message to supporters? “Learn to love life,” he pleads. “Do not let negativity get the best of you. Instead, try to analyze the situation, grow from it, and become a stronger person. It’s definitely something that’s easier said than done but it’s not impossible. If anybody’s calling you names, being mean to you, or just giving you negative vibes, turn that around into power. Turn it into motivation and dedication. Just live your best life and good things will come of it.”

Violett Beane

words by VANESSA SALLES photos by STORM SANTOS

With an onscreen presence that steals every scene she’s in, Violett Beane is a must-watch on CBS’ God Friended Me. Having found her passion for acting at a young age, the actress’ rise to fame was destined. “My whole life has been an introduction to the arts,” she explains. “My mom was an art teacher for a really long time so I feel like I’ve always been welcomed to explore my creativity. I got into theatre while I was in high school and just loved everything about being on stage and performing. When I graduated, I found an agent and started auditioning. I was in Texas at the time and there wasn’t a huge market over there. Eventually, I met my manager and I ended up moving to Los Angeles. Everything took off from there and it’s been quite the interesting journey.”

28

Drawn to complex and layered roles, Violett knew right away that she wanted to star in God Friended Me. “I read a lot of scripts during pilot season,” she recalls. “However, the script for this show was the only one that made me feel uplifted after reading it. My character, Cara, is very strong-willed and very stubborn, much like me. I related to that and I think that’s what really drew me in.”

you have the opportunity to mend, why not try? I think their relationship progresses really nicely throughout the season so that’s fun to watch.” Inspired by Cara’s determination, Violett hopes to see more of her work life onscreen. “She’s very career driven,” she explains. “I would love to see her take off in that realm and really discover her voice. I think it’d be really interesting to see where that would take her and her career. The storylines are endless.”

Her favorite part about bringing her onscreen persona to life? “All the relationships that she’s been building,” Violett says. “The tension that Cara feels with her mom and her mom’s daughter is really sort of something that I’ve never experi-

nitely the highlight of my year,” she smiles. “It’s been such an amazing journey and to be able to do with it such amazing people is something that I’m so grateful for. In this industry, you’re always auditioning for something; sometimes it hits, sometimes it doesn’t. Right now, I’m so happy with the way things are going.”

She adds, “If I had to describe Cara right now, I’d say she’s conflicted. Knowing that her mom is around and could be involved in her life scares her because there’s still this fear of being rejected – the same way that her mom could choose to be involved, she could also choose not to be. Cara’s scared to get too invested but she also doesn’t want to lose her mom. It’s a tough situation all around. Personally, I’m rooting for their relationship. If

Having relocated to New York for filming, Violett’s fallen in love with the east coast. “Relocating to New York has been so amazing,” she gushes. “I never thought I’d see myself making the move here but, so far, I’m loving it. I moved to Brooklyn and I truly can’t say enough great things about it. Hopefully, I feel the same way in the winter time!”

29

30

31

As for future projects, the actress has a got a few things in mind. “Honestly, I’ve always wanted to do a period piece,” she reveals. “Any decade, really. I love the 50’s and 60’s but I’d also love to do something Victorian, with the big dresses and hair. It’d definitely be something different and I think the challenge as an actor would be really fun. Stepping into a different timeline, onscreen, is certainly on my career bucket list.” When she’s not busy on set, the 22-year-old spends her time globe-trotting. “I absolutely love traveling,” she beams. “It’s hard to do when you’re filming something but I think it’s really important to take time off and unwind. A lot of times, people don’t realize how stressed or overworked they are; traveling is a chance to unplug and just immerse yourself in something new for awhile. I’m going to Mexico this Christmas and then possibly Hawaii or Australia in the summer, which I’m very excited about!” Reflecting on the advice she’d offer an aspiring actor, Violett says it’s all about taking a leap of faith. “Put yourself out here and do as much of it as you can,” she shares. “That way, you’re practicing the skill and also taking the time to find out if you truly love it. A lot of the time, people are scared to try things and end up going their whole life without pursuing the thing they’re most passionate about. I think that, if you’re interested in something, go out and do it. Don’t think about it too much because you’ll just talk yourself out of it. Find plays at your local theater, see if there’s an agent in town, find auditions, make videos with your friends, etc. Just try. If it’s something you love, why not try to make a career out of it?”

Making their mark in the art scene, Lexi and Allie Kaplan are stars on the rise. Exploring the complexities of today’s celebrity culture, the twins’ work comments on society through the eyes of the millennial generation. “We’ve been painting our entire lives,” Lexi explains. “It’s always been the thing we were most interested in and it’s been the greatest rollercoaster pursuing it.” Working as a duo, the twins create conversation while breaking through societal clichés. Tackling the media headlines through a different lens, Lexi and Allie use their brand of wit and humor to explore new modes of communication. Self-aware and constantly evolving, The Kalan Twins are driven and inspired by the world they see around them. Relatable and made for the millennial age, we’re certain you’ll want a Kaplan original hanging on your walls. Originally from the east coast, what made you decide to be apart of LA’s art scene instead? ALLIE: I think we realized that NY was so set in its ways. There was a system for the way things worked there and that didn’t work for us. LA is the home of entertainment and it’s the home of all things Hollywood. We knew we wanted to merge art and entertainment because art is such a creative thing and there are so many possibilities to make both worlds work together. LEXI: We were definitely drawn to the unknown. We didn’t really know anything about LA’s art scene until we moved out here and it was exciting to become apart of it.

41

How did you know that you wanted your art to focus on the culture’s obsession with pop-culture and celebrity? LEXI: I think it’s because it’s so much of what we see. It’s relatable because we’re just painting the things that we see on social media. ALLIE: Social media is a big part of people’s lives. Everything’s an advertisement and a brand. Pop-culture is infused in social media and that’s why it’s so easy to create art about it. What’s the reaction been like from people online/in person? ALLIE: I think people really love it and find it relatable. At first, people thought our work was really controversial because there was a lot of nudity involved. Now, people understand what we’re doing and what we’re trying to say – we’re just poking fun at our culture and our generation right now. It’s all in good fun. LEXI: A lot of the quotes we use are things people actually caption their Instagram photos with. We even ask fans to give us suggestions and it’s always so fun to see what people are saying – I think people are really enjoying the art that we’re creating. What’s the creative process usually like for you guys when you’re brainstorming ideas for a new series? ALLIE: One of us will usually come up with an idea, like a meme we saw online or something that we think is trending/relatable.

IN CONVERSATION WITH

43

IN CONVERSATION WITH

LEXI: The ideas are usually scattered. For Art Basel, we had this fun idea to do our own take on a meme we saw that said, “Next week has been exhausting.” We had the idea to paint a bar of Xanax and it turned out really cool. When you feel like something isn’t turning out the way you hoped it would, how do you deal with that? LEXI: We always want to be passionate about the work we’re doing so if we don’t like the way something’s turning out, we don’t continue with it. We’ll scrap it and either do it again or try to come up with something else. ALLIE: The two of us have definitely had creative disagreements before about how things looked. There have been instances where one of us thinks it looks great and the other wants to do it all over again. It’s all about communication because nothing’s ever going to look perfect. Do you ever find yourselves feeling limited when it comes to creating? LEXI: We pride ourselves in keeping an open mind. We don’t have any restrictions for ourselves and like to put everything out there. ALLIE: That’s what art is about, pushing the boundaries and being free. Who are the artists you two are inspired by? LEXI: Cindy Sherman, Barbra Kruger, and Warhol. I think what Warhol did with marketing and advertis-

ing, that’s what we’re kind of doing with Instagram. You can’t take yourself too seriously, you know? ALLIE: We actually just discovered a really cool artist on Instagram, called Ben Evans. His work is super interesting because he’s also making fun of millennials, but in a cooler way. When you’re not busy painting, what are you usually up to? ALLIE: Honestly, we’re always painting or working on brand collaborations. Art and painting is the medium in how we choose to express ourselves but that doesn’t mean that’s the only way we do so. We definitely want to get involved in fashion, music, acting, all different forms of this creative umbrella. We’re always trying and working on different projects that have to do with those mediums. LEXI: Painting is what we’re focusing on right now but it’s just one of many outlets for us. We want to collaborate and do so many things in the creative field. What kind of advice would you give to aspiring artists? LEXI: First and foremost, if you’re passionate about something, go for it. We’ve been at this for awhile now and we’re still not at the level that we’d like to be with our art and brand because things like that take time. We always encourage people to follow their passions and never give up. Do the thing that makes you excited. ALLIE: Put your stuff out there. Don’t wait for someone to knock on your door because it’s not going to happen. You have to use the tools that you have and make yourself known.

Growing up, what ignited your passion for music? My parents exposed me to all different types of music growing up, which definitely sparked my love for it! But, what solidified that passion was when I watched “Grease” for the first time when I was 8. That was the moment I knew music would forever be the biggest part of my life. How would you describe your personal sound? Transparent Pop, which is pop music set to honest and transparent lyrics. My sound is focused around the specific stories and emotions that are unique to each song. I like to explore sound that supports the mood and lyrical context, so there’s a lot that can influence my personal sound. When you think of your ultimate career goals, what comes to mind? Longevity is an ultimate goal of mine. I would love to be able to keep growing as an artist and have a long, fulfilling career. There’s something so special about evolving with fans into different phases of your career. I never want to stop creating music. LISTEN TO: “GOOD BEHAVIOR”

Growing up, what ignited your passion for music? Having music in my house all the time definitely inspired me and influenced my sound. I performed with my sister as the duo “The Knox sisters” locally and then began doing shows of my own using a loop pedal. How would you describe your personal sound? I feel like my sound is always changing. The music I listen to or the mood I’m in definitely has an impact on whatever I’m creating. My Hardwire Mixtape, which came out last month, has a bit of an indie, pop and soul feel. I think no matter what I’m singing it always ends up feeling soulful because I love that genre. What is your ultimate career goals? I want to continue creating. I really love creating melodies and collaborating with other artists, songwriters and musicians. I also hope to be touring a bunch in the future and just have my music connect with people. I recently played Austin City Limits and it’s just the coolest feeling seeing people sing your lyrics with you. LISTEN TO: “FAKE A LAUGH” 47

Growing up, what ignited your passion for music? I was always surrounded by music growing up; my family was always playing music and we would all sing together. For me, it was the most natural thing that I would want to pursue music. I´ve never felt so strongly about anything else, it was always music that came first. How would you describe your personal sound? It’s a tricky question, but I would say it´s a dreamy soundscape with electronic elements combined with alternative pop and storytelling lyrics. What’s something you want to see more of in the music industry? Women in music. Women as producers, Women at power positions. Women given the same opportunities as men. What was the creation process like for your new EP? I always wanted to make an EP, and I knew that I wanted to create a visual world around it. We sat down and went through the songs that we already had and tried to figure out the story that would tie them all together. Honestly, it was like the story told itself. With a debut EP in the works and sold-out tours under her belt, now’s the time to catch the rising star in action. Discovered and signed by one of the biggest pop stars in the world, Katy Perry, CYN is now making her own mark in the music scene. Having grown up listening to Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Doris Day, and Carole King, CYN’s dreamy vocals will have you hooked from the second you press play. Constantly inspired by her surroundings, the singer uses it as a catalyst to create music. “I have a big imagination,” she says, wide-eyed. “Whenever I leave my house I want to be able to feel like I’m going on an adventure. I love moving through people, I like to romanticize my life and be a character. I often refer to cities as adult playgrounds that’s what it feels like hopping on and off the subway, looking at giant buildings, wondering what they are.” The name CYN itself is tongue in cheek, an evolved Lolita playing on the word ‘sin’. “Some men act shocked when they hear that I’m called CYN,” she laughs. “I have a lot of fun challenging people’s perceptions.” LISTEN TO: “I’LL STILL HAVE ME” 48

Growing up, what ignited your passion for music? I’ve always felt like music chose me. I can’t remember a time when music didn’t take me somewhere else - when it didn’t fully elevate how I was feeling. And then I sang a Jewel song in the first grade talent show and in that moment I knew that I would be a singer. I’ve never been as sure about anything ever again! How would you describe your personal sound? Soulful and honest. I learned how to sing by listening to Aretha Franklin, Beyoncé, and Amy Winehouse; and how to write by studying Stevie Nicks, Sheryl Crow, and Adele. What are your ultimate career goals? I’m addicted to feeling connected to strangers through music. That’s what made me fall in love with albums as a kid and that’s what I love most about performing now. I love that wave of energy I get when I’m singing about something I’m feeling and I can tell people in the audience feel the same way. So my goal is to sing all over the world and connect with as many people as possible. LISTEN TO: “JOSHUA TREE”

Growing up, what ignited your passion for music? I’ve always loved music & performing. My family has tons of home videos from when I was younger, and I’m singing in all of them. I used to put on a concert for my parents in our living room every single night. My first actual performance was when I was 5 years old. Music has always made me feel happy & safe - no matter what was happening in my life. How would you describe your personal sound? I would say my personal sound is pop with an edge! What’s something you want to see more of in the music industry? I’d love to see people in the industry give smaller artists/ independent artists more of a chance. It’s definitely harder to get writing sessions etc. when you’re just starting out. I know that I personally have struggled with this.. I’m very fortunate to have found a really great team of people that truly believe in me. You have to start somewhere, so I think that would be an awesome thing to see! LISTEN TO: “GUMMY BEARS” 49

donna missal

With the release of her debut album, This Time, one of Donna’s greatest hopes is for the album to impart the same sense of self-discovery that informed its creation. “This isn’t a record about love and loss and relationships,” Missal says. “It’s about taking chances for yourself, figuring out who you are and really standing behind that. I made a point of putting myself out there as a real person navigating this life at this moment in time, because I want to do whatever I can as an artist to help people feel more confident in navigating their own lives. I’d love for the listener to receive the message that you can take your time to learn and love yourself. That’s been the most important discovery that I want to share with this album.” Above all, the album is a testament to the sheer force of Missal’s voice, a dynamic but delicate instrument. Taking her time to ensure that she created the best material that she could, Donna truly found her voice as an artist. “I allowed myself a lot of time to figure out what I wanted to say and how I wanted to say it, and because of all that I ended up making a record that really reflects who I am.”

Growing up, what ignited your passion for music? My earliest and most important memories all involve music. How it made me feel, how it became an escape, there was a soundtrack to every monumental moment. Around age 11 I began writing songs and learning instruments and that was it. I never loved doing anything else as much as I loved singing and creating. How would you describe your personal sound? I’m so inspired by the 90’s and early 2000’s – therefore, I’d describe my sound as Bubblegum grunge. When you think of ultimate career goals, what comes to mind? I think of being able to consistently release music that I’m proud of and that people connect with. Right now, that’s my goal. I just want to be able to make music forever. cooper & Gatlin

Growing up, what ignited your passion for music? We were born into a super musical family. Our mom traveled for years with her band while we were growing up, and our dad is a Grammy-nominated producer. We spent a lot of time on the road with our mom, and in the studio with our dad. So, being in that environment from an early age really gave us an appreciation and love for music. How would you describe your personal sound? Slightly moody, left-of-center pop. We both gravitate toward vibey kinds of music, so we try to combine that with our more organic roots. A lot of our songs start as just two voices and a guitar, but we also try to marry that with the music that we listen to and are inspired by. What’s the creative process usually like for you? We definitely approach songwriting from opposite sides. Gatlin is very much a lyricist, while Cooper is more of a chord/production person, and we tend to meet in the middle for melodies. Since we grew up together and listened to a lot of the same music, we tend to like the same things and have similar ideas. LISTEN TO: “BREAK”

My parents put me in piano lessons when I turned five and I realized pretty quickly that I was going to be an entertainer. How would you describe your personal sound? The core is country. It always has been. But it definitely has influences of soul and pop. Dolly, Reba, Shania, and JLO are all major inspirations to me. What’s the creative process usually like for you? Honestly it’s nothing fancy! Most of the time it’s just sitting down at the piano trying to make up something cool and if I like it, I work on it. Scottish singer-songwriter Nina Nesbitt has had quite the year. Set to headline a North American tour this winter, the “Loyal to Me” singer will be hitting 19 cities to perform tracks off her upcoming album The Sun Will Come Up, The Seasons Will Change. Three years in the making, this album is already proving to be well worth the wait. Rather than creating for the sake of creating, Nina waited for the inspiration to strike. “With an album I feel like it’s parallel to my life in a way –I was just trying to find out what I liked and what I was good at,” she says. The new era showcases the singer’s growth as an artist and her stance to remain authentic to herself and her sound. “I’m so proud of this album,” she says. “This is the album I always wanted to make on my own terms. It’s an honest account of somebody in their early ‘20s, giving a real window into their often ever changing life.” It’s been non-stop for Nina since signing to Cooking Vinyl, including multiple tours in the US, a UK and European tour with Lewis Capaldi, another sold-out UK headline tour, and winning the Evolution Award at the SSE Scottish Music Awards.

Growing up, what ignited your passion for music? Natalia: My mom was a country artist in Nashville and watching her perform really inspired me. I started writing lyrics when I was really young as an outlet and then I put them to guitar. Ruby: Music has always been a part of my life in some way or another. It’s an important part of life in the culture where I was raised so I’ve always found comfort in music. How would you describe your personal sound? N+R: Our sound really doesn’t fit into a genre. While our lyricism could be described as pop, our sound has more of an edgier, darker alt vibe and we also dabble with electronic production. What are your ultimate career goals? Natalia: We can’t wait to tour again, and just play more live shows. Playing our music and getting an honest reaction is always the best part. Ruby: I think being able to do music for the rest of my life is my ultimate goal, and be able to buy my mum a house one day. Since then, our passion for music has become about our family and having this shared goal as sisters. How would you describe your personal sound? We’d describe our sound as a cinematic, dark pop/alt. Her debut EP, Love, Me was received with open arms from her fans. “After years of writing and trial and error, feeling defeated and then feeling on top of the world, time discovering who I am as a human as an artist, I have now come to a point where I have this little cluster of songs all in one place with a bow on top and I can’t possibly explain in words how great it feels,” she says. “I hope the EP finds its way to old friends and to new friends and I hope everyone loves it like I do.” LISTEN TO: “FORTRESS”

What inspired you to create Happy Not Perfect? Knowing that we’re all suffering from stress and anxiety. Life isn’t meant to just be a struggle; we need education and tools that can help us manage our emotions. Stress and anxiety is at an all time high and it’s because we know nothing about our mind… it’s possible to feel happier and it’s possible to sleep better. It’s possible to reduce your stress, if you know how. Realizing that, I felt compelled to make Happy Not Perfect into a world that would be full of tools that you could utilize, whenever you need them.

Having done extensive research, what’s something you were surprised to learn? I couldn’t believe that 9/10 people breathe badly. That’s crazy. 90% of us are walking around breathing into our chest and taking short, shallow breaths. Learning how to belly-breathe and relaxing your shoulders is something that’s so simple but has such a major impact on the way that you feel. While researching, I became and trained as a breathing instructor. It was crucial to me to understand how to help someone relax their mind and body, through breath.

Can you tell us about the moment you realized you needed to do more for yourself? Before HNP, I was a TV host. Eventually, I came to the realization that being a host wasn’t fulfilling me. I want to wake up everyday and know that I’ve made at least one person’s life better. Though I loved TV presenting, I just knew that I could do more to help people. Since I’ve been working on a project that’s dedicated to helping other people feel happier, its made me so much happier doing so.

Why do you think it’s so important that people check in with their thoughts/emotions on a daily basis? Think about the things you do, daily, to take care of your outward appearance. You brush your teeth, you wash your face, etc. You do that because you want to stay clean and healthy. Your mind is exactly the same. If you do not take a second to check in with your thoughts and emotions, they’ll build up. Then, you’re left feeling stressed and burnt out. We spend so much of our time in the subconscious mind and you’re just gliding through life on auto-pilot. Checking in with yourself is the only way to come off autopilot and release all of your built-up emotions.

How long was HNP in the works before its launch? I worked on Happy Not Perfect for three years before it launched. People forget how long things take but it definitely wasn’t overnight. The reason why it took so long was because I didn’t want to do or build anything until I understood the science behind it. Everything we created on HNP has had research behind it and science is the backbone of the app. It took me a long time to learn about neuroscience and how to apply the psychology into technology that is fun for people to use.

The app guides its users through a daily ritual. What’s the most important step? I think the most important step of The Refresh is the ‘grateful diary.’ It’s so easy to forget what you have and it’s so easy to focus on the stuff you don’t have. We spend our lives on social media and seeing what everyone else is doing and we never take a second to think of how blessed we are. The ‘grateful diary’ allows you to take that second to reflect.

IN CONVERSATION WITH

What has the reaction been like from app users? The reaction to the app has been unbelievable. If you look at the app store, there are so many amazing reviews from people that have been using it. It usually makes me cry to see those sweet messages because I can’t believe how many lives the app is changing. When should users be expecting new HNP features? We are evolving features all the time. You can expect new content early next year! We actually have 2-3 years of planned new features, which I’m really excited for everyone to use. The journey of self-care/love/ realization is constant. It is a work in progress, which is what we all are. It takes work but HNP makes it easy for you. Outside of using the app, what are some things you do to unwind? There are a few things that I like to do for myself. Going for a walk every morning is absolutely critical for me. Eating well is another key factor in maintaining my mental well-being. Of course, sleep is the medicine to everything. We have some great sleep meditations on the app! If you could tell your HNP users one thing, what would it be? You’re doing great. It’s totally normal to feel a whirlwind of emotions; that’s what it means to be a human being. Life is tough and it doesn’t need to be perfect. Happiness takes work and HNP is there to help you as best as we can. We adore you and you’re apart of the community forever.

With recurring roles on both CBS’ Seal Team and Netflix’s Alexa & Katie, Kerri Medders has solidified herself as a star on the rise. Charismatic both on and off screen, the 18-year-old actress is a scene-stealer in any and every project. Drawn to challenging and complex roles, Kerri knew instantly that she wanted to be a part of Seal Team. “I thought the dynamic of the show was really interesting,” she says. “I like that the role would also serve as a learning experience and I’d be able to gain insight to the Military and how the home life is affected by it. For those who haven’t seen the show yet, it’s an inside look to SEAL missions and what that means to the families of those that are serving.” Describing her onscreen persona, the actress reveals that her character development is her favorite thing about Emma Hayes. “With every episode, I never know what to expect,” Kerri says. “My character always has these snarky and sarcastic remarks that I’m always looking forward to seeing in scripts. In recent episodes though, she’s starting to mature and is really stepping up to the plate when her family needs her. Growing as my character also gives me the opportunity to grow as an individual and actress, which I love.” Showcasing her comedic range in Netflix’s Alexa & Katie, Kerri delivers some of the show’s funniest one-liners. “My favorite thing about Gwenny is her dramatics,” she laughs. “She’s an over-achiever, sassy, to-the-point kind of girl. She always finds herself in situations that are so ‘champagne problems,’ but to her, they are very real. It’s been so much fun bringing her to life.”

Promising viewers a side to Gwenny that they’ve never seen before, the actress notes that season two is bigger and better than the first. “There are a lot of surprises,” she says. “Viewers are going to see a big change in Gwenny’s life and it’s not something that you’ll see coming!” Heartfelt and genuine, Alexa & Katie has found a home in the hearts of families that resonate with its message. “They were so many reviews of the show that stated how it had brought love and laughter into homes and households that were dealing with similar situations. It made those heavy situations into something that they could use to connect them, in a lighthearted way. It really gave me perspective on how much the show has meant to people, which I’m really appreciative of. If there’s one message I want viewers to take away from Alexa & Katie, it’s to always be there for your friends.” Having recently wrapped her first feature film, Kerri is set to star in the upcoming, Do Not Reply. “It was definitely a huge leap for me in my career,” she explains. “It was my first time doing film and the character, Meagan, was a beautiful challenge. The film is a cautionary tale on the dark side of communicating with strangers online; Meagan is already pretty deep into the twisted world of trusting the wrong person. I’m excited for people to see it.” When she’s not busy on set, Kerri’s busy making music. With a unique sound and a story to tell, the rising star assures fans that new releases are on the horizon. “Personally, I believe my music grows with personal development,” she says. “The more I grow into my space of high dimensions, the more my music and meaning grows. With my upcoming music, I think people are going to see a different side to me. I’m growing and learning and expressing all of these changes and experiences in my new music – I’m excited to start releasing it!

Meet your new best friends: Keltie Knight, Becca Tobin, and Jac Vanek. Hosts of the celebrity-driven podcast, LadyGang, the three are here to answer all of life’s burning questions. Inspired by their bottomless mimosa brunches, ‘LadyGang’ is home to raw, honest, and hilarious conversations on what life is really like behind the scenes. Since the podcast’s inception in 2015, LadyGang has racked up over 35 million downloads and has earned itself an incredibly loyal fanbase. Mixing juicy pop-culture commentary and unfiltered celebrity interviews, the podcast has since become a must-watch show on E! With the network picking up a series order earlier this year, LadyGang is the perfect addition to your Sunday night ritual. Discussing all things womanhood, Keltie, Becca, and Jac are navigating their way through life and sharing it all with the LadyGang! Take us back to the beginning; what can you tell us about the moment where the ‘LadyGang’ podcast became more than just an idea? KELTIE: We dove in headfirst and didn’t think too much about it. We’ve certainly learned our lessons throughout the years but it all happened every quickly. After we made the decision to do the podcast, we put everything together and started recording right away. BECCA: With Keltie, an idea is only an idea for a split second and then it’s very quickly in motion! (That’s her secret sauce) After she called me and suggested the podcast, we had meetings with podcast companies scheduled for the next week and we were recording soon after that. No time to think! That’s how we prefer to do things. Completely unfiltered, is it ever nerve-racking to be so open and honest about your life, for all to hear? BECCA: Only when I envision my in-laws tuning in! KELTIE: I still find it really scary. I’ve always been someone who’s open about the good and the bad but this has really taken it to a whole other level! Now that the audience is getting bigger and everyone is listening, I can’t even hide from my dad! JAC: Honestly, unfiltered is our norm now. If we weren’t talking about embarrassing things every episode, something would feel off. With so many people connecting to you and your stories, have you had any memorable fan encounters/

stories that you can share with us? JAC: I was just in DC recently and ended up watching our show at a dive bar. A few of our most devoted DC LG literally got out of bed to come watch with me. It was so cute! BECCA: The LadyGang fan encounters are all pretty cool. People feel like they really know us, so sometimes they share very private things. It’s pretty fun! KELTIE: It always tickles my soul when ladies, who were strangers before LadyGang are helping each other out. We’ve had friends meet and become bridesmaids at the other’s wedding, birthday parties thrown, rides given, etc. I think it’s really cool! It’s certainly gets harder to make friends as you get older and this has been a new excuse for everyone to find a few new besties! When E! approached you to turn the podcast into a TV show, what was the deciding factor for you all to jump at the opportunity? Was TV always the goal? JAC: TV was the goal from the very beginning, but I don’t think any of us thought it would happen so seamlessly! KELTIE: TV was always the goal. When we started LadyGang, we formatted it like a talk show and I think that’s what has made it stand out! BECCA: We definitely JUMPED at the opportunity. We always had big dreams of becoming a show, but I never really expected it to happen! What’s been the biggest adjustment you’ve had to make when it comes to working on the show vs. working on the podcast? JAC: No more sweatpants. :( KELTIE: With the podcast, we’re usually recording it in no makeup, possibly with a face mask on, and definitely with sweatpants on. The TV show is more time-consuming and a lot more goes on behind-the-scenes. We’ve had to really stick to our guns to make sure the TV show feels like the LadyGang; some of things that we were doing on the podcast don’t necessarily work on TV so we just try to get as close to it as we can. BECCA: Having to wear makeup and pants. Also serving as executive producers on the show, how important was it to you to take on that role and be involved with the behind-the-scenes aspects of the show? BECCA: We have spent three years building this brand and growing the audience, so we had to be very very involved in the creation of the show. Thank goodness we have producers and executives that allow us to be involved as much as we are in the process. That’s pretty rare! 63

IN CONVERSATION WITH KELTIE: LadyGang is our brand. We created it and we know our girls and what they want to hear. It would’ve been incredibly weird to take LadyGang to TV and then have a bunch of people who haven’t been invested in it telling us what to say and what to do and who to be. JAC: The LadyGang is our baby and we are very protective of the brand itself. I don’t think we would have done the TV show if we couldn’t serve as EPs as well for that reason. We are so fortunate to have a team of producers and a network who are incredible and let us do our thing. With a successful first few episodes already, what should viewers be expecting from the rest of the show’s first season? JAC: E! Is very excited about our unfiltered mouths so I think they’re going to let us get more and more raunchy as the episodes go on. BECCA: We have so many amazing guests coming up and I’m pretty sure we are just going to become progressively more inappropriate, so buckle up! KELTIE: I think we’ve certainly gotten more comfortable as we’ve continued to tape shows and we are doing a deep dive into all things womanhood. We’re talking about all the things that women have to struggle with and go through – things that people might usually feel embarrassed to talk about. With all that you’ve achieved in 2018, what’s on the bucket list for 2019? KELTIE: I want to be on the New York Times bestseller list as an author and I want LadyGang to put out a book. BECCA: Unlike Keltie, I don’t make vision boards for the new year! I prefer zero expectations! JAC: We’ve got a few things in the works. Maybe something you can read, maybe something you can drink… Any special message to the fans of Lady Gang? JAC: Thanks for being the raddest and most badass group of women we could ever ask for! BECCA: Just thank you a million times! KELTIE: The only thing I can really say is thank you and I hope we haven’t disappointed you! It’s been so amazing to have all the support from our listeners and we’ll always try to give back to the ladies in our community by helping them with their lives! 66

Beauty 101 with Sylvia Gani SKIN SAVIOR

TRAVEL ESSENTIALS

HAIR CARE

OFF-DUTY CHIC

I love using any hydrating face mask because it plumps my skin up and gives it a more youthful look with a natural glow. When I feel like my pores need a little extra TLC, I love using the Biore Nose Strips (2; $5.99)!

I love having my products in convenient travel-sized bottles. Some of my must-have items are moisturizer, mascara, and concealer. I actually did a video pretty recently on this where fans can see the specific products! On days where I don’t need too much make up, I stick with a good BB cream, concealer, brows, and mascara. That’s perfect for a low-key, natural “no makeup” look.

Color Wow Hair is my favorite hair care brand at the moment. I love their texturizing spray and hair Dream Coat (3; $28) – it leaves my hair feeling silky smooth and it stays manageable for days!

LOVIN’ LUXURY

My favorite luxury makeup item right now is the Tatcha Dewy Skin Mist (6; $48). I use it to prime and/or set my face when I need extra hydration.

SIGNATURE SCENT

I definitely like to rotate through different scents. However, my go-to favorite is Marc Jacob’s Daisy(4; $104)! It’s definitely a staple item.

DRUGSTORE FAVE

FOREVER FAVE

My favorite drugstore item right now has to be the L’Oreal Lash Paradise Mascara (5; $6.99). It’s bomb for creating full/long looking lashes!

The one item I wish never gets discontinued is the MAC Fix+ (1; $26). It’ll my go-to setting spray for life!

GIVEAWAY!

We’re giving one lucky reader the new Sylvia Gani x BH Cosmetics palette! To enter, make sure to follow @thedailyshuffle on Instagram! Note: Must be a U.S. resident to enter. Winner will be contacted by 11/26. What can you tell us about the behind-the-scenes process of creating the collab? I was really lucky that BH allowed me creative freedom when it came to this collaboration. They were there to guide me and made suggestions based on their own expertise but the creative vision was all mine. It was my dream eyeshadow palette, they just knew how to make it come true and I’m so excited to share it with everyone.

Tell us about your collaboration with BH Cosmetics! How did you know it’d be a good fit to work together? I am so proud of my palette, it’s something that I have put a lot of work into perfecting. I was involved in every aspect and I’m excited to be able to finally share it with everyone. I have always loved BH Cosmetics; My very first eyeshadow palette was from BH, so it couldn’t be a better brand to make my own palette with.
