sage charmaine
With a newly released EP, urban-pop artist Sage Charmaine is well deserving of a spot on all your favorite playlists. We talked to the rising songstress about the making of her 6-track release, musical inspirations and more! words by VANESSA SALLES photo by KATY PRITCHETT
Tell us about your debut EP, Don’t Leave Me – any memorable moments while writing/ recording it? I think “Don’t Leave Me” and “Happy Birthday” were the most memorable for me. I recorded both in Rocky’s studio and I just remember how easily the songs were flowing together - we had all the right vibes and ideas in those sessions which made the creativity come naturally. Is there a track that holds the most significance to you? What’s the story behind it? I think “Don’t Leave Me” is the most important song on the EP. Not only is it the “showcased” title, but I feel like that track truly captures the essence of the EP. “Don’t Leave Me” is about constantly finding this one person on your mind, and you don’t know why, but it almost engulfs you. You want the person all to yourself; they’re sort of your “guilty pleasure,” if you will, and you never want to be without them. What’s the songwriting process usually like for you? My songwriting process can vary but usually, I’ll go into a session and reflect on how I’ve been feeling lately, and just go off of that. If any thoughts or lines come to mind, I’ll record it in my notes so I can reference it in my sessions. I’ll then start hearing what the producers come up with and forge the lyrics and melody to the music! You hit the road with Hey Violet earlier this summer; what was that experience like for you? Amazing. The band is made up of incredibly talented musicians so it was a really cool opportunity to work alongside such serious
artists. Playing shows with them was super energetic and my favorite part was how lit the crowd would get during the performances. It was an opportunity that I’ll never forget, especially when I got to open for them at a soldout Troubadour show in LA! When it comes to stage presence, which artist(s) do you take inspiration from? I’d say I take a lot of inspo from Michael Jackson and Paramore. Right now, my favorite performer has to be Cardi B. I love everything about her performances, from the choreo to the outfits to the stage decor. She’s the level of bad bitch I’m aspiring to be, for sure. What’s on your bucket list for the rest of 2019? For the rest of 2019, I have performances and making new music booking my time up. If I had to make a bucket list of things I’d like to do, I guess I’d like to go on a short vacay to Texas, be able to headline a busy Los Angeles show myself, and wrap up another music project that I’ve been working on! Any special message for fans? I would tell my fans to always stay true to themselves. I know it sounds cliché, but it’s always better to go after what you want rather than what someone else wants you to do. In this industry especially, you always come across people telling you that you’re doing the wrong thing or you need to change up what you’re doing. I’ve found that it’s extremely important to just drown out what toxic people are saying and only take the criticism you need. It’s always better to go after your own dreams and goals, and it’ll just make it that much better when the hard work pays off. THE DAILY SHUFFLE

paul karmiryan
An entertainer both on and off screen, Paul Karmiryan is a force to be reckoned with. We caught up with the actor to get the inside scoop on his latest projects. words by VANESSA SALLES photo by SMAC MCCREANOR
Tell us about the return of Veronica Mars! How did you know that you wanted to be involved? Honestly, at first, I had never heard of the show and had no idea what the series was about. But I very quickly became a ‘marshmallow’! I thought it was so cool that the show had such a strong fan base and that the fans funded the return of the show through Kickstarter! After watching the previous seasons and being a part of this newest season on Hulu, I totally get it… it’s such a great show and I can’t wait for everyone to see the revival! It is going to be a really great season! What can you tell us about your role on the show? My character’s name is Alex Maloof. He’s a good guy who comes from a wealthy family, but he definitely feels entitled because of his status. I had to learn how to speak Arabic for the role because there are many instances where I had to communicate with my on-screen family in the language. It was very challenging to learn but also a very fun process to take on. Without giving anything away, how would you describe these new episodes? I feel like this season checks a lot of boxes. Each episode is jam-packed with occurrences that will keep you on your toes and things that will catch you by surprise. Of course, there are also many moments that will have you laughing. Overall, even with just 8 episodes, it’s a very full season. Not only are there so many favorites coming back, but a bunch of new characters and talented actors that I’m sure the viewers will absolutely appreciate and fall in love with!
Any memorable behind-the-scenes moments that you can share with us? There were a lot of in-depth life talks, friendly pranks, games, photo sessions, and dance parties in the trailers! We had a bunch of days where we filmed at the beach, so we took advantage of the scenery as well. I was lucky to have such a cool cast and production throughout the process. Who are some people you’d love to work with? This is tough. I feel like this list grows every day and with every new show or movie that I watch. I am so lucky to be surrounded in an industry with so many inspiring talented performers, writers, directors, and just all around talented human beings and teams. When you’re not busy on set, what are you usually up to? I love a great game night! I am one of those people who has a riddle, a game or a thoughtprovoking question lined up at all times. I also love nature so you can find me at the beach, on a hike, or simply taking a stroll to my neighborhood park quite often. Also, as an athlete and dancer, I am constantly moving to some type of song, making concept videos with dance partners, or just getting a good workout in. What’s on your bucket list for the rest of 2019? I want to travel more! I am so lucky that my line of work comes with the perks of traveling to different locations! Whether it is for work or for my own personal pleasure and growth, I plan on traveling more this year. I want to see the world! Next stop, Japan!

apple
With a sound and style that’s uniquely their own, Crimson Apple is a band you’ll want to get familiar with. We caught up with sisters Colby, Shelby, Carthi and Faith Benson, to get the inside scoop on their new EP, Somebody! words by VANESSA SALLES
Tell us about your upcoming EP, Somebody! What kind of vibe/sound should fans be expecting? Somebody is an EP that represents us following our dreams and is a culmination of all the emotions we’ve had since our move from Hawaii to LA. We’d describe our vibe/sound as a cinematic, dark pop-alternative. Any memorable moments while writing/ recording it? We’ll never forget all the long nights we spent writing songs and working on demos. We also really cherish all the people we were able to work with throughout the process of recording the EP. We had such an amazing team of producers, engineers, and mentors that made the work so much fun! Is there a track that holds the most significance to you? What’s the story behind it? We have a strong connection to all the songs but if we were to pick one right now, we’d say it’s “Sorry Now.” The song is about a bad situation we all went through, and coming out of that, we feel like writing this song helped us feel stronger. Working in a group with sisters, is it ever hard to make sure you’re all on the same page? Honestly, being a group of sisters generally helps us be more connected! We come from the same background and upbringing, so we’re usually always on the same page. And if we’re not on agreement about something, we can
always see where everyone is coming from and understand each other’s perspectives. It definitely makes it easier being sisters! Having been on tour earlier this year, what would you say is your favorite part about putting on a live performance? Our favorite part about putting on a live performance is that each audience has a different energy. It’s awesome, like we’re getting to experience a unique show every time we play. When it comes to stage presence, which artist(s) do you draw inspiration from? We’re always trying to learn new tips and tricks by watching other artist’ stage performances! We’ve recently been watching a lot of 5 Seconds of Summer, Dua Lipa, and One Ok Rock concerts to draw inspiration for our live shows! What’s on your bucket list for the rest of 2019? We would absolutely love to go on a larger tour opening up for an established headlining band before the end of the year! Any special message for fans? Thank you so much for supporting us! We really hope you like the Somebody EP, and for anyone who isn’t familiar with us, we really appreciate you taking the time to read this interview!

KATIE STEVENS words by VANESSA SALLES photos by LAURA THOMPSON styling by CRISTINA TEDERICK makeup by MEGAN LANOUX hair by MURIEL VANCAUWEN FOR EXCLUSIVE ARTISTS USING WELLA PROFESSIONALS AND HOT TOOLS
Starring as go-getter Jane Sloan on Freeform’s The Bold Type, Katie Steven’s perfect portrayal of a young adult trying to navigate today’s dating/ internet/work culture is one that’d resonate with anyone who tunes in. “I was so excited to see a show that’s all about female empowerment,” she says. “At the same time, it’s also about the struggles of your 20s and what a mess that can be. It’s about women making mistakes and owning them. Nothing is wrapped in a pretty little bow; the show allows these women to be messy and not have their lives figured out. That really spoke to me and I knew right away that I wanted to be apart of it.” Three seasons in, the actress’ on-screen evolution is undeniable. “It’s funny because I feel like Jane has grown tremendously but there are still times where I question her and why she’s doing what she’s doing,” she laughs. “She’s grown a lot in terms of her career and learning how to speak up for herself and how to stop apologizing for who she is. In the first season, she wanted so badly to impress Jacqueline and write the things that she thought Jacqueline wanted to see, rather than finding her own voice. After leaving and going to Incite, she finally realized what it was that she was passionate about and the kind of writer that she wanted to be. I’m happy that she ended up back at Scarlet because she’s definitely flourished there.”
THE DAILY SHUFFLE 14
With the heart of the show being centered on friendship, Katie notes the importance of showcasing such powerful and supportive relationships. “I love the way that friendship is portrayed on The Bold Type,” she says. “Friendship is about supporting one another and being there for each other, no matter what. I think it’s important that we show a friendship like Jane, Kat, and Sutton’s because they never judge one another. If they mess up, they immediately talk about it and figure out how to make it better; that’s what a true friendship should be. They’re each other’s biggest fans and are always rooting for each other’s success – female friendships like that are so important.” Having grown close to her on-screen besties, the actress credits their chemistry as the result of genuine friendship. “It doesn’t even feel like work when we’re shooting scenes together,” she gushes. “The writers give us a lot of creative freedom and there’s been so many moments where we’ve been able to ad-lib and make the scenes our own. One of the most memorable moments was in season one during the Yoni egg scene. There’s a part where Sutton is trying to distract Jane and she ends up mentioning drinking and puppies; that entire bit was adlibbed by Meghann [Fahy] because she knows how much I love puppies! We have such a great chemistry and it’s always fun when we’re able to add bits and pieces of our real friendship into the show.”
THE DAILY SHUFFLE 16
Though The Bold Type likes to keep things fun and light, the Freeform series is never one to shy away from heavy and important topics. “One of the great things about having so many different characters on our show is the fact that we get to touch on so many different storylines,” Katie explains. “One of my favorites was Alex’s ‘Me Too’ moment. He was unaware of his actions and behavior and wanted to course-correct to ensure that it didn’t happen again. Living in such a cancel culture right now, it’s important that we allow second chances to those who want to take the time to better themselves. If we don’t allow people to course-correct, it doesn’t allow us any room to grow. I love that Alex acknowledged his actions and listened to and learned from the women around him – he was given a chance to make things better and he did.” In regards to Jane, the actress adds, “I love being able to showcase Jane’s medical struggles because I don’t think people realize the different ways that breast cancer can affect you. I’ve learned so much about what women in their 20s have to deal with if they’re diagnosed with BRCA and how much planning goes into their futures. I think the storyline is important because it shows women that you have options. There’s always this expectation that’s put on women about having or wanting to have children and that’s just so much pressure – it’s important to know all your options and know how to ask the questions that you need answers to. I’m proud of this storyline because it’s about taking control of your life and choosing your future.”
19
Katie’s hopes for the fourth season? “I want to see how Jane’s going to take what she’s learned from being so assertive and sure of herself as a writer, and apply it to her personal life,” she says. “In the finale, we saw her make the decision to stay with (and forgive) Ryan after his act of infidelity. I think it’s going to be interesting to see how she’s going to move past that and how she copes with it, moving forward. We also ended this last season with a cliffhanger at the Scarlet office. It’s possible that things are about to change for everyone but I hope Jane manages to maintain her confidence because she’s made such great strides over the years.” Recalling her times on set, the actress describes the series as one big learning experience. “Working on this show and bringing Jane to life has definitely instilled more confidence in myself,” she says. “I’ve never been the type to truly own my sexuality and I remember getting these sex scenes on the show and wondering how/why they thought I could pull it off. Having to step out of my comfort zone and be comfortable and confident in those scenes has allowed me to find that confidence in my own life. I’m owning the fact that I am sexy and that my sexuality is okay and that it’s natural and apart of life. I think I’ve definitely found a balance in my personal life and that empowerment has come from being on this show.”
THE DAILY SHUFFLE 20
Outside of work, Katie makes sure to prioritize her well-being. “I love health and fitness but, honestly, I think I initially got into it because I wasn’t happy with who I was when I looked in the mirror,” she explains. “I think that’s something a lot of people deal with and it’s definitely been a journey for me, both physically and mentally. At first, I was just working out because I felt like I had to; I thought it would make me thinner and happier. I was creating this unhealthy relationship with my body and with the gym and because I was doing it all for the wrong reasons, I hated everything about it. Once my mentality changed, so did everything else. I started finding workouts that I actually enjoyed and fueled my body in ways that made me feel good about myself. Once I realized that prioritizing health/ fitness was actually an act of self-love and not a way to punish myself for any imperfections, I was able to use that time to calm my mind, center myself and just be present. I love the life that I live and I want it to be a long one; taking care of myself and my mental health is so important to me.” By sharing bits of her health journey online, Katie hopes to encourage anyone who needs it. “I hope that I can inspire people who’ve gone through the same struggles of self-acceptance,” she says. “It’s still a journey and it’ll always be a journey. There are days where I wake up and I’m just not feeling great about the way that I look. I think that’s okay and there shouldn’t be any shame in waking up and not feeling awesome all the time; it happens to everyone. Bad days come with the good days and self-love and acceptance is a choice we have to make everyday. If I can inspire people to try and figure out the best way to take care of themselves, that’s amazing.”

If PRETTYMUCH isn’t already on your radar, you’re doing it wrong. Comprised of Brandon Arreaga, Edwin Honoret, Austin Porter, Nick Mara, and Zion Kuwonu, the group opened up about their latest release, fan love, and more! words by VANESSA SALLES photo by NEV TODOROVIC
Tell us about your latest EP, Phases! Any memorable moments while writing/ recording it? EDWIN: Overall, I think we are just really excited to be able to share music that we were so involved with. From the writing to the production, every track on this EP has come directly from us, in some way. NICK: I gotta give a shout out to Brandon. He wrote and produced ‘Gone 2 Long’ in our garage studio one night. I remember hearing him in there working on it, and it still gives me chills listening to it. Is there a track that holds the most significance to you? What’s the story behind it? BRANDON: I think ‘Gone 2 Long’ holds a really special place in my heart. I wrote it last year; I had just said goodbye to my girlfriend at the time as she was going off to college. We hugged goodbye and I went straight into the studio - this was the result. It definitely means a lot to me. Working as a group, how do you make sure that you’re all on the same page when creating new music? AUSTIN: I think what makes it work is just how close we are. We know how to work together and we know where everyone’s strengths are. Even when we’re not in the same room together, we always share everything that we’re working on. ZION: Even though we all have different inspirations, we all kind of have the same taste and know what we want our sound to be. It’s taken some time to get there but we’re all really happy with everything we’ve been working on recently.
What’s the fan reaction been like so far to the EP? EDWIN: Its been amazing! We are so thankful to have our BEANZ supporting us, especially since it’s music that we feel really proud of. When we see fans loving it too, its feels surreal. BRANDON: At the end of the day, we just want to create music that we love and that our fans will love to. We really do all of this for them. When it comes to stage presence, which artist(s) are you inspired by? NICK: When it comes to stage presence, I would have to say that Justin Timberlake is someone I pull a lot of inspiration from. His creativity on stage and the energy he brings to every performance is really cool. EDWIN: I draw inspiration from artists like Tyler the Creator and Kanye West - people who like to go against the grain and create new waves! What’s the best way for fans to get your attention on social media? AUSTIN: We’re always scrolling through social media but I think what stands out the most is anytime we see fan art. Our fans are so crazy talented and we love seeing what they come up with! What’s on your bucket list for the rest of 2019? BRANDON: I think I speak for everyone when I say that we just want to keep creating more music and challenging ourselves every day in the studio, in dance, in our videos, everything. We just want to be better than we were yesterday.

Starring alongside Tiffany Haddish and Tracy Morgan on TBS’ The Last OG, Taylor Mosby can hold her own in any scene. We talked to the rising actress about memorable set moments, dream storylines and more. Let’s talk The Last OG! What is it about the show that drew you in? When I found out that it was going to be about Tracy Morgan’s character coming out of prison after 15 years, I immediately knew it was going to be hilarious. Not only that, but it was written by THE Jordan Peele? Oh, yeah! This was definitely the show for me! I was so excited to play Tracy Morgan’s and Tiffany Haddish’s daughter. I knew I was going to love my character because she was a perfect mix of the two comedians. How would you describe Amira? What’s your favorite part about portraying her? Amira is a smart, strong girl with a little sass and knows what she wants. Amira is not easily shaken by new situations. She is also a great older sister who likes to tease her twin brother and I have to admit, I love teasing my younger brothers as well. My favorite part about Amira is that she is not afraid to speak her mind. Any memorable set moments that you can share with us? One of my favorite moments on set this season was when Dante (Shazad) and I were teaching Mr. Ryan (Josh), Ms. Tiffany (Shay) and Mr. Morgan (Tray) some popular dance moves. We couldn’t stop laughing! And then, they taught us some old school dance moves! Though the writers do a great job on their own, what kind of storyline do you think would be fun to explore for Amira for future episodes/ seasons? I think an episode about the twins having their sweet sixteen together would be hilarious! I feel like we would learn a little more about the kids and their likes and dislikes. We would also get to see their parents put together a birthday party
which would definitely be funny, considering that everyone celebrated their sweet sixteen differently growing up. Tell us about the film Breakthrough - what was your experience like on set? On set, especially during the emotional scenes, you could really feel God’s presence. The entire cast was like a family to me. We all had such a great time filming this movie together and telling the story. It was absolutely amazing! Not only that, but we filmed the movie in Canada and it was my first time leaving the country! I had a great time on and off set and exploring Canada! When you think of your ultimate dream role, what comes to mind? My dream role in a film would be ‘Mia’ from La La Land. I LOVED that movie! If they ever do it again or produce a project similar to that one, I would love to play the lead. That movie incorporated musical theater and film perfectly! My dream role on Broadway is ‘Ceely’ from “The Color Purple.” I feel like I would learn a lot about acting and expand my vocal range, as well as have the ability to play someone from a different time period. “The Color Purple” happens to be one of my favorite Broadway soundtracks! Any special message for fans? To any other aspiring actors and actresses, I say, do not let the word “no” stop you. Do not be intimidated by the majority. When I say that, I mean if you don’t see anyone in the industry that looks like you, sounds like you, or thinks like you, that doesn’t mean you don’t belong. It means there’s a spot open for someone just like you. Everyone is special in their own way. The world wants to hear your story, just like everyone else’s. Don’t be afraid to just try. A fan-favorite on YouTube Premium’s Cobra Kai, Mary Mouser shines as Samantha LaRusso. We talked to the rising actress about behindthe-scenes moments and more!
Tell us about Cobra Kai – what is it about the show that made you want to be involved? Cobra Kai is the continuation of the Karate Kid films from the 80’s! It picks up 30+ years later to see what Johnny Lawrence and Daniel LaRusso are up to now. It’s fun to watch the collision of cultures as it tells the stories of the original films’ characters as well as introducing the new generation! Any memorable moments from filming the latest season that you can share with us? Filming season 2 was exhausting in many ways, but so, so exhilarating! I loved every second. Goofing off in the dojo as we prepped for the season was so fun, but it was even more exciting to dive into filming the action sequences. I had more than a few adventures, from learning fight choreography to flying around on a wire to throw a crazy kick. It was so fun. What’s been your favorite part about portraying your role as Samantha? The idea of carrying on the LaRusso name is so special and important to me. Also, challenging myself physically to learn an incredible martial art in only months was no easy feat, but I work hard at it every day. What has the reaction been like from fans? Inspiring. They are so excited, and so dedicated. Their passion has pushed me to go even harder than I thought was possible. I’m so very grateful for the support. When you’re not busy on a set, what are you usually up to?
I’ve started my own YouTube channel! It’s mostly me doing things incorrectly so that we can all laugh at the silliness together and maybe learn something along the way. I’m a student as well. I’m currently an English major, but also pursuing a possible degree in American Sign Language. Other than that, I love to read! You’re very open online about living with Type 1 Diabetes – how has living with it shaped you and your life? Though Diabetes has never been easy, it has taught me so much about me. My life, my strength, my endurance, my health, and the importance of knowing what is worth my time and effort. So much work and time goes in to managing my health, but in return I get to live a full and healthy life, as well as connect with others who have Type 1. The diagnosis has given me fuel to work harder; working to prove to myself and others that Diabetes doesn’t have to stop you from anything. I want to be able to spread that message so that some other scared kid, just given life-altering news at their doctor’s office, might hear it and know that they can still accomplish absolutely anything they set their heart on. When you think of your ultimate dream goal, what comes to mind? Working. I hope to work hard for as long as I possibly can. Whatever comes of that will be a bonus for which I would be grateful, but for me the goal is to keep challenging myself in new ways throughout my career.
THE DAILY SHUFFLE 28
christina kirkman words by VANESSA SALLES photo by SARAH PARTAIN
Starring on OWN’s newest hit series, Ambitions, Christina Kirkman is a total must-watch. The actress opened up about her new role and what fans can expect to see! Let’s talk Ambitions! What is it about the show that made you want to be involved? Booking a job in this competitive town is a HUGE win. Loving the job and your character is hitting the jackpot. I hit the jackpot. My character, Lori, immediately drew me in. I am honored to play such a badass strong female. What can you tell us about your role and what viewers can expect to see from her? You know that feeling you start getting when you’re a little tipsy and immediately begin hyping yourself up? This huge wave of confidence pours over you where you may even start replaying situations in your head where you’re this badass bitch? That’s Lori, sober. Lori isn’t afraid of who she is or what she wants. Her confidence isn’t dependent on other people’s validation which is why I love her so much. I think she’s a modern day femmefatal character that you would see in Film Noir. She is comfortable in her sexuality and she uses it as her weapon, but she’s smart and she’s calculated. Although she is a force to be reckoned with, you do start to see her layers as the season progresses. That’s when things start getting interesting. What has the reaction been like to the premiere of the show? I think I speak for the entire cast, crew & production when I say that we are so overwhelmed with joy with the amount of love and support we have received. Ambitions is one of those shows that as soon as you try to wrap your head around what just happened, it comes back from a commercial break ready to go another round. Viewers already got to see a cocktail of sex, love & betrayal; it was the perfect introduction to all the craziness that will be unleashed this season. What are you most excited for fans to see in the upcoming episodes? I think our creator, Jamey Giddens, put it
perfectly when he said “There’s nothing guilty about this pleasure.” Ambitions fills that need of wanting to watch something juicy and entertaining that you can gossip about with your friends but it’s also a show that you can invest in. Will Packer always does an incredible job at presenting strong females in his projects and this show is no different. You either love these characters or you love to hate them. Either way, you’re invested in them. When you think of your ultimate dream role, what comes to mind? Ambitions is actually my first drama. My background is comedy. Comedy has always been my comfort zone because I use it as a tool in my everyday life. Taking on the role of Lori was very intimidating for me because I wasn’t sure if I had the proper tools. Then I realized, as actors, we already have all the tools and we just need to freakin’ use them. My dream role would be to play a superhero (or villain). When you’re not busy on set, what are you usually up to? Anything active or outdoors. I like a big child, I like to play! Aside from being able to pursue acting, living in California has allowed me to do all of my favorite hobbies: surfing, rockclimbing, skateboarding, snowboarding, hiking, yoga. Any special message for fans/viewers? I have a HUGE box of scripts from auditions I haven’t booked in my bedroom. It’s a reminder to me to keep going. As artists, we don’t always share the process. Some people see me and say, ‘Oh that’s the girl from All That, and now she’s on another show.’ But that’s not how it happened. For years, I heard a lot of ‘no’s’ and a lot of, ‘You’re too much of this,’ or ‘You’re not enough of that.’ And then… someone told me ‘yes.’ It only took one.
