bonafide scene-stealer, Simu Liu shines as Jung Kim on Canadian hit series, Kim’s Convenience. Hilarious, charming, and heartfelt, the CBC show follows the adventures of a Korean-Canadian family and is based on the 2011 play by Ins Choi. “I first knew I wanted to be involved when I saw the play at the Sony Centre in the winter of 2015,” Simu explains. “I knew immediately that my life was changed forever; I had never seen my life so acutely reflected onstage. I wept throughout the entire thing. Around that time, the writer, Ins Choi, attended a play that I was doing called Banana Boys. He caught up with me backstage and kind of let me know that the show would be looking for a Jung and that I should be ready.” Fast forward a few months and Simu found himself in the audition room, alongside hundreds of other actors going out for the role. “A month after the initial audition, I got a callback,” he says, “A month after that, I was brought in for a third audition. This time, there was nobody else in the waiting room; the job was mine to lose. I went in, gave everything I could possibly have given, and the rest was history.” Through his ups and downs, fans can’t help but root for Jung’s happiness. “I think he’s in a really interesting place at the end of season two,” Simu shares. “He really got his butt kicked in the finale, where everything he had been working towards kind of came crashing down on him. I think anyone would feel disheartened given what’s happened, but I also think that Jung is a lot more of a fighter than anyone gives him credit for. He’s turned his life around before and under much worse circumstances, so I wouldn’t count him out just yet.” As for Jung’s love life, fans aren’t the only ones with fingers crossed that he’ll end up with Shannon. “Nicole and I are both rooting hard for this relationship to happen simply because we have no idea what Jung and Shannon’s boyfriend/girlfriend dynamic would be like,” Simu laughs. “We joke all the time that our characters are way too awkward to ever actually date each other… but at the same time, we’re in the same boat as our audience – we’ve invested years into this budding romance and we need to make it happen!”

Another relationship that fans are invested in? Jung and Appa’s. Season two found the two at the brink of reconciliation but things went downhill pretty quickly. “If you had asked me about Jung and Appa two years ago, I would have probably said that reconciliation wasn’t possible, based on my own experiences and beliefs. But last year, I was able to sit down with my parents (with whom I’ve had very similar conflicts with in my adolescence) and connect on a level that I had not thought possible before. Today my parents are my close friends, and so I do have full belief that Jung and Appa could also get there. The thing is, both parties have to be emotionally ready; you can’t rush or force these conversations. I guess we’ll just have to tune in and see where things go!” Though incredibly busy on the Kim’s Convenience set, Simu’s already got other projects in the works. “If I’m not insanely busy, I don’t feel like I’m doing anything,” he says. “It’s this weird anxiety I’ve had my entire career and it definitely comes from an extreme lack of patience and/or ability to sit still. I just spoke at a University in LA and will stop in Vancouver next and then head back home to Toronto. Then, I’m headed to Winnipeg for six weeks to do a wonderful play called Vietgone with the Manitoba Theatre Company. While I’m rehearsing for that, I’ll be developing a digital series with the CBC in which I will be assuming head writer and executive producer duties. If there’s any time left after that, I’ll probably be chipping away at the movie I’ve been trying to write since forever!” Simu’s fervent passion for all his upcoming projects comes from the industry’s promise of progress. “It’s a tremendously exciting time for the artists and storytellers in this industry because the industry is in the best shape its ever been, from a diversity standpoint,” he notes. “After the smashing success of films like Black Panther and Crazy Rich Asians, Hollywood can no longer ignore what’s in front of them. This has never been a moral issue for the ones in charge; it has always and forever will be about maximizing profits, and these films have proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that diverse stories with diverse characters ARE profitable. As long as audiences continue to demand it, we’ll see the trend continue.”

ROZZI words by VANESSA SALLES photo by ROBIN HARPER

ith a voice that demands to be heard, singer-songwriter Rozzi is a force to be reckoned with. Soulful, honest, and raw, the 27-yearold artist doesn’t shy away from vulnerability and instead embraces it when creating her art. “Being open and real is what makes the songwriting process cathartic,” Rozzi says. “It’s also what makes the music that much more human which, to me, is the whole point.” With her highly-anticipated debut album releasing next month, Rozzi describes Bad Together as “a concept album with a story of love and heartbreak.” Written over the course of a relationship, listeners will experience all the highs and lows from start to finish. “Ultimately, I think of it as a coming-of-age album,” the singer shares. “When I listen to it, I can hear myself figuring things out and finding out who I want to be. I think a first love does that for people. Even though I’ve been working at this for awhile, this album really feels like an introduction for me.” A taste of what’s to come, Rozzi’s newest single “Joshua Tree” describes the woes of heartache. “It’s definitely my favorite song on the album,” she reveals. “I think it’s so special to me because, when I wrote it, I wasn’t really thinking about how the song would turn out or if anyone would like it. I was just writing it for myself because I was heartbroken and needed to talk about it.” Lyrically, Bad Together will tell the story of one single relationship. Sonically, the album will be a reflection of all the sounds that inspire its writer. “There’s a lot of variety,” Rozzi notes. “I think you can hear the different musical influences I had at different times. Listening back, I can pinpoint when I was really deep in old Aretha records, or the new Ariana Grande album, or when I discovered Kacey Musgraves and Teyana Tay-

lor. Something that’s certain is the album’s common theme of being personal and emotional the whole way through.” Recalling her time in the studio, Rozzi reveals her creative process to be an introspective one. “I usually write the lyrics first on my own,” she explains. “My manager once told me that if I ever felt embarrassed to put something in a song, that’s a sign that I’m on the right track. I took that to heart and I think it’s just in my blood now to try and share everything.” She adds, “I’m low-key not that open of a person in real life so sometimes I have a hard time being open in the studio with collaborators. It helps if I put down what I’m feeling when I’m alone so I can just read it in the room and not have to look at anyone when they’re learning all of my deepest secrets.” Describing another track off the upcoming album, Rozzi reveals there’s one she’s most excited for everyone to hear. “There’s a song on the album called ‘Two Minutes’ that’s really special to me,” she says. “I wrote it the day after the 2016 presidential election and I thought it was going to be some angry, screamo metal song or something; it ended up being something totally different.” As for what’s up next, Rozzi’s closing out the year strong. “There were so many highlights this year,” she gushes. “The first big LA show I played after ‘Never Over You’ came out was such a special night. I had a song on the radio for the first time, I was playing Jimmy Kimmel the next day, and we had just sold out the Peppermint Club. Now, I’m looking forward to my album coming out and finally releasing the music that I’ve been working so hard on.”

fan-favorite on NBC’s Superstore, Nichole Bloom stars as Cheyenne, Cloud 9’s bubbly young employee. With perfect comedic timing and some of the show’s best one-liners, the rising actress plays the role like no one else could.

When thinking up wishful storylines for her onscreen persona, Nichole admits that it’s hard to imagine what’s coming up next. “I think every actor wants the show to be about them,” she jokes. “It’s a big ensemble so there’s only so much time that we can focus on a certain character. ith an electric presence both on and off screen, Gabrielle Ruiz shines as Valencia Perez on The CW’s musical comedy-drama, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Having made the leap from stage to screen, the Mexican-American actress quickly became a fan-favorite and was upped to series regular by the show’s second season.

didn’t need to struggle about her choice and no big announcement was necessary. She just found love and that love was with a human who happens to be a woman. All our fans have thanked us for representing this specific LGBTQ story and it’s been an absolute honor and joy to share. Valencia is comfortable in her choice and she doesn’t need anyone’s approval – that, to me, is very inspiring.”

“I immediately fell in love with the creativity of the show’s dark comedy,” she recalls. “Being a Broadway actress for many years, I was eager to work on a new project that featured so much song and dance.” Recalling her audition process, Gabrielle reveals that she initially had a different take on her character. “At my first audition, I was definitely a little sweeter with Valencia’s reactions to Rebecca,” she says. “Then, Aline Brosh McKenna and Rachel Bloom gave me permission to really let loose in call-backs and play her as this intimidating, insecure mean girl.”

With the show’s new and final season airing this month, it’s no surprise that the cast is just as sad about it as fans are. “I keep telling people that I feel as though I’m experiencing Senior Year,” she laughs. “It’s definitely bittersweet having to say goodbye to the show that changed my entire life. While on set, everyone comes to work confident and experienced in what they do best. All we can do is be present, savor all the moments we have left, and look ahead for what’s to come.”

Even at Valencia’s worst, viewers couldn’t help but root for her happy ending - a testament to Ruiz’s stellar acting. “I’m so proud of Valencia’s evolution throughout the past three seasons,” the actress shares. “What I’m most proud of is that the changes Valencia has made in her life were for herself and not for anyone else. I admire that she’s ceased the moment of reinventing herself. I think we can all do that in our own lives; cease the moment.” Season three of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend finds Valencia with a newfound confidence and in a new relationship. “The story of Valencia and Beth was handled in the exact opposite way that the show usually portrays big moments,” Gabrielle explains. “There was no song and dance for them and I loved that Aline and Rachel made that choice for Valencia’s big life change. As for what’s up next, Gabrielle hopes to enjoy some down time with her husband. Having started her career in New York City, the actress admits that it took some time to get used to California. “My husband and I have spent the last 3 years finding our groove,” she says. “Now, we’ve discovered a new way of life here in LA and this is our first year of feeling settled in our new home. Before the year ends, I hope we make time to vacation in Southern California!” When asked about future projects, Ruiz is open to giving the ‘mean girl’ role another go. “Having gotten a taste of Valencia’s mean side in season one, I think it’d be really fun to work on a super villain role,” she says. “I would also die a very happy woman if I was ever apart of the biopic of Cher. Now that’s a dream role! Right now, I am loving seeing diversity and representation on TV. It’s just the beginning which is very exciting and encouraging to think about.”

eturning from a two year hiatus, Lauren Aquilina is back on the music scene - stronger and better than ever before. “Taking two years off from being an artist was exactly what I needed,” she reveals. “I knew it was a risk but I’m so glad that I listened to my body and brain on that one. Even though it seems like I’ve been ‘away,’ I’ve actually been working harder than I ever have.”

When feeling stressed or overwhelmed, the ‘Psycho’ singer finds comfort in reaching out to her loved ones. “I have an amazing mum and amazing friends that I know I can call at any time,” she says. “When I feel anxious or overwhelmed, I usually like to just be alone, watch a trashy movie, and just disconnect for a while. That always tends to help me!” Describing her creative process, Lauren explains that she likes to take the time to get to know her collaborators. “I like to start each session by just talking for at least an hour because I think it’s important for everyone to feel comfortable and start opening up to be able to get a good concept,” the singer explains. “Then, we’ll probably get some chords going, start singing some melodies, and then spend time on lyrics after. We go from strangers in the studio to connecting on a personal level.”

Releasing ‘Psycho’ as her reintroduction, fans have embraced Lauren as the newest force in pop music. “I wrote the single late last year and loved it,” she says. “No one wanted to release it, so that was the catalyst for me to be like ‘ok, let’s do this.’ It’s actually based on a true story about me going to my ex’s house in the middle of the night and sitting on his front steps crying until he came out and found me (lol). “This past spring, after American Housewife wrapped its second season, I traveled back home to NYC for a month. I was with family and friends, but most of my free time was spent working at Practice Worldwide’s studio collaborating with an amazing team of songwriters and musicians, led by Ali Theodore. ‘Smile’ was the result, along with four other songs!” Eager to release more music, Meg’s hoping to share a new single within the next few months. “I’m actually heading back to NYC this month to finish some songs,” she reveals. “Of the songs we have currently, each one is a little different. If I had to describe it, I would say it’s urban pop – a mix of R&B and pop. I’m excited for my fans to hear new music because they’ve been so incredibly supportive of me. I’m so happy that they love my shows and music because it means the world; I wish I was able to meet all of them but I like to stay connected with them by reading all their posts on social media!” On a fast track to the top, Meg’s ready for the new year and all the adventures that come with it. “I’ve had such an incredible 2018,” she says. “’Zombies’ was very well received, American Housewife got picked up for season 3, I released my single ‘Smile,’ performed at Arthur Ashe Kids Day in NYC, interviewed Janet Jackson for Radio Disney, and so much more! It’s exciting to think that things can only get bigger and better.” She adds, “A major highlight of this year was going to Tokyo, Japan,” she says. “I speak Japanese so it was so cool to be able to speak it in Japan! I met so many international fans, went to Disney Channel Japan, Tokyo Disneyland, and was fully immersed in Japanese culture; it was so surreal! I can’t wait to go back - hopefully it’s sometime soon!” As for her future ambitions in Hollywood, the young entertainer has some serious career goals at the top of her list. “I have two dream acting projects,” she reveals. “The first is to be the lead in an action hero movie. The second would be to be in a Broadway musical! I would love to play characters that are strong, complex, and dynamic female leads - roles that young girls and women can look up to and aspire to be.”

Putting out this EP has been the highlight of my year.” While some are discovering Symphani through her latest musical release, the 25-year-old has already made a name for herself as a beauty influencer on YouTube. “It’s been a long journey,” she recalls. “YouTube taught me a lot about staying consistent and knowing that reaching a goal is possible with hard work. It also taught me to have tough skin; I’m much more confident in myself now and not afraid to show my vulnerable sides.” Though music and beauty may seem like two different lanes, Symphani’s success in both fields is a testament to the fact that she refuses to be boxed in by any labels. “What I want people to realize about me, but also realize about themselves, is that they don’t have to be labeled anything,” she says. “You can be whatever you want. I have a lot of different passions in life and I plan on executing them all. I think of people like Rihanna and how she’s in every lane possible. That’s amazing to me and I know I can do it, too.”

W

ith the newly released EP, I Am, Symphani Soto has solidified herself as an artist to watch. The six-track release is deeply self-explorative and feeds the soul of anyone yearning for that nostalgic R&B sound.

“It definitely has a bit of the old school vibe in it,” she says. “However, I think it’s still very current and modern. I grew up loving Jill Scott and Amel Larrieux so you can hear the inspiration throughout the EP; their voices are the ones that made me want to become a singer.” With a fiercely loyal fan base, I Am has found its way to the top of listeners’ favorite playlists. “The reactions from everyone has been amazing and I’m super thankful,” Symphani shares. “So many people are loving the project and the visuals and it’s all I can ask for.”

When citing her inspirations, Symphani’s mom is high up on the list. “My mother definitely inspired my passion for makeup and fashion,” she notes. “She’s always been a source of knowing what looks right and so I always go to her for advice. As I’ve gotten older, she actually comes to me for advice now, too! It’s fun being able to bond over it.” Of course, like anyone and everyone who’s pursuing their passions, Symphani sometimes finds herself overwhelmed by it all. “Honestly, it gets difficult,” she says. “I think I’ve been able to manage it well but both these worlds are full-time jobs to me. It’s a lot sometimes but I wouldn’t trade any of it.” For the singer/beauty influencer, her online following also doubles as her support system. “The endless support from fans is really what gets me through my toughest days,” she adds. “I talk to them all the time and love feeling connected to them.”

AGAINST THE CURRENT

F

resh off a European tour, Against The Current is a pop-rock force to be reckoned with. Debuting on Billboard’s Top New Artists chart in 2016, the three-piece band consists of lead vocalist Chrissy Costanza, guitarist and backing vocalist Dan Gow, and drummer Will Ferri.

We wanted to make sure everything we put in each song had intention and wasn’t just there for the sake of being there. We focused a lot more on dynamic within the record as a whole and within each song.” With multiple worldwide tours under their belt, the band has become professionals at packing their travel essentials. “I like bringing some physical photos of my friends and family with me because it makes me feel closer to them when I miss them,” the singer shares. “I also make sure to pack an arsenal of things to keep my voice healthy. That means I usually stock up on lozenges, sprays, and vitamins!”

Written and recorded over the course of a year, their sophomore album, “Past Lives,” is a collection of eleven self-explorative tracks. Though the songs vary in tone and style, the album connects over a thematic idea that arose during the band’s writing process. When writing ‘Come Alive,’ Chrissy realized that the album was ultimately about learning to come back to yourself after the end of a relationship, or as one chapter of life closes and While on the road, the band’s able to do two of their faanother opens. vorite things: connect with fans and perform live. “Our fans are seriously so dope,” Chrissy gushes. “Touring has “We really wanted to focus on the needs of each indi- been so amazing because we get to just feed off the envidual song this time around,” Chrissy explains. “What ergy of the crowd every night. JEREMY RAY TAYLOR words by VANESSA SALLES photo by BENJAMIN TAYLOR FOR SISU INTUITION

P

roven to be a star on the rise, Jeremy Ray Taylor is a name you want to get familiar with. Known for his role in the 2017 adaptation of Stephen King’s It, Jeremy’s onscreen presence is matched with his larger than life personality. The 15-year-old can be seen next in Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween, a must-watch for this year’s spooky season. “I’m really excited to bring a new generation to the Goosebumps franchise,” the young actor says. “I really enjoyed the first movie and my older brothers loved the book series when they were young.” Describing his character as the cautious type, Jeremy’s role as Sonny finds him trying his best to avoid trouble, but ultimately walking right into it. “My character Sonny is a middle school kid who loves science and is obsessed with Nickola Tesla,” he describes. “Sonny’s mom works full time so he ends up in his sister’s care quite a bit, which she finds very annoying. He has a best friend named Sam, who is more like part of the family than a friend. Sonny’s job is to pretty much keep Sam from doing crazy stuff, or at least try.” When recalling the most memorable moment on set, Jeremy revealed he went into full-on fan mode when running into R.L. Stine. “It was just a normal everyday trip to the hair and makeup trailer and then all of a sudden, there he was,” he exclaims. “I flipped out. Like, genuinely flipped out. R.L. Stine was so gracious and kind and he was very excited about out film. It was a real treat to have him on the set with all of us!” Inclusive and welcoming, the Goosebumps 2 set was the perfect environment to film a movie in. “Ari Sandel, our director, set the tone perfectly on set,” Jeremy gushes. “Think about it like this: Ari is a cartoon character, hardworking guy, TOTAL history buff who keeps you laughing nonstop. That was the vibe. Of course, we still worked very hard and had long days and nights; what kept things fun was that the vibe on set was always collaborative and lighthearted.”

Set to draw in audiences of all ages, the upcoming film will have families at the edge of their seats while laughing at the craziest scenes. “It won’t disappoint,” Jeremy promises. “It’s going to be a great film and a great reason for families to come together with a big bowl of popcorn. I want to thank all the fans and viewers for their support and encouragement; I truly wouldn’t be where I am without them.” Though starring in a horror comedy, Jeremy’s not the biggest fan of being scared. “I absolutely love all of Halloween,” he explains. “However, I hate the scary parts. I’m a big scaredy cat when it comes to those sorts of things so I don’t generally watch those kinds of movies. I am however thinking of branching out this year and watching some scary stuff. Something I do love are haunted houses – those are always so much fun!” As for what’s next for Jeremy, the rising star describes his dream project as a movie with “lots of magic and beautiful colors.” He goes on to explain, “Who wouldn’t want to play a crazy awesome Warklock? That’d be epic. I also hear they’re looking for a new Superman… I wouldn’t mind doing that!” As charming off screen as he is onscreen, Jeremy reveals the best piece of advice he’s gotten came from his mother and is one he will always live by. “Seek honesty,” he says. “Dealing with truth is better than sifting through lies and fluff. It’s easier to move forward and make decisions when you know the truth, whether it be good, bad, or brutal.” For international fans eager to meet the cast of Goosebumps 2, a trip is already in the works. “We are finalizing a trip to Argentina to meet fans,” the actor reveals. “I’m super excited about that because it’s an opportunity for some fun memories!”

REBECCA FIELD words by VANESSA SALLES photo by MARC CARTWRIGHT

S

et to star in what’s sure to be the must-watch movie of the season, Rebecca Field shines alongside Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga in A Star is Born. With Oscar buzz already brewing, the film premiered at the Venice Film Festival to a standing ovation. “It’s all very exciting,” Rebecca gushes. “I remember auditioning for my role as Gail and already feeling like the movie was going to be something monumental. The hardest part for me was the waiting; I didn’t hear back for a while and thought the role had gone to someone else. A month later, I found out that I booked it.” Describing her character, Rebecca reveals Gail to be a “handle what needs handling kind of gal.” She adds, “Gail is Jackson Maine [Bradley Cooper]’s assistant and right-hand woman. She’s involved in a lot of the behind-the-scenes work.” An inspiring film with the soundtrack to match, Rebecca insists the music is going to be one of the most memorable aspects. “I think I’m most excited for people to hear all the music,” she reveals. “It’s beautiful and I can’t get it out of my head.” Recalling her time on set, it’s no surprise that a Lady Gaga story tops the list of most memorable moments. “Stefani a.k.a. Lady Gaga gave a little mini concert at the Greek Theater when we were filming,” Rebecca recalls. “There were so many amazing fans of hers who had been patiently waiting in the audience as extras. She just walked out on stage and sang her beautiful heart out for them and for all of us; it was amazing to see this person who I was working with, Stefani, transform into this mega star, Lady Gaga behind the piano. She is such a force and quite a lovely human being.” With an incredible cast and an incredible story to tell, the vibe on set was nothing short of electric. “It was amped up in the best way possible,” Rebecca says. “The

set really had a life force of its own and I think that’s what’s so great. All of the incredible performances, shots, words, make up, songs, costumes and hard work took on a life of their own and people will get to feel all of that when they watch. I knew how lucky I was to be a part of it just from the caliber of people who were involved.” From the film, Rebecca hopes fans leave the theaters feeling inspired and unafraid to be their authentic selves. “Everyone has something special to offer in this world so don’t be afraid to share your gifts,” she says. “Don’t ever let anyone hold you back. I also hope that everyone finds that one true, deep, complicated love in their lifetime.” Up next, Rebecca can be seen alongside the Gallagher clan on Showtime’s ninth season of Shameless. “It’s literally one of my favorite shows so I was really beside myself to get to be on it,” she gushes. “The opportunity to audition for a role came up and I went in, worked hard, and was lucky enough to come out on the other side with the job. Everyone on set was very kind and welcoming - just getting to be apart of the cast in and of itself was such a memorable experience. From the upcoming episodes, viewers can expect comradery, chaos, and candor… the usual with that bunch!” With an already impressive resume, Rebecca hopes to continue to grow and play characters that challenge her as an actress. “I would love to play a dark and deeply complex character,” she says. “I have played the side kick and best friend and I love that but I want something that’s the antithesis of what I have played thus far; that would be really exciting. As for people I’d love to work with, I mean, Meryl Streep tops the list. Is there anyone out there that can help facilitate that?!”
