letter from the editor Hey, readers! Can you believe it? We’re officially wrapping up 2019! This year has been so magical and I couldn’t be more grateful for all of your support. We’ve covered some of our favorite releases and have hopefully helped you discover your new favorite artist(s)! Our final cover star of the year is the always lovely Brenda Song. It was so incredible to be able to chat with her about her post-Disney career, the undeniable #GRLPWR in her new Hulu series Dollface, and so much more. Check out her cover story to see how that conversation went down! In this issue, you’ll also find a roundup of things to look out for in the new year! We’re talking artists, movies, podcasts, etc. As always, let us know who you’d like to see featured in future issues - 2020 is going to be the best year yet! meg & dia
The perfect addition to your Christmas playlist? Meg and Dia’s new album! We talked to the sister duo about the making of the album and more! words by VANESSA SALLES photo by ELLIOT INGHAM
Tell us about your recently released Christmas album! What inspired the project? Dia inspired the project. Honestly, I was a bit quizzical at first. I mean, I love Christmas, time with family, good food. What’s not to love? It just would not have dawned on me to make a “Meg and Dia” Christmas album. But then, the opportunities that seem to “randomly” appear on this musical adventure with my sister so far, end up being my favorite parts, and this was no exception. I’m extremely proud of Dia and I, and I kind of want to make a Christmas album every year! Any memorable moments when recording it that you can share with us? Dia and I were very fortunate to have ended up with the most perfect two producers and songwriters for the project. I loved getting to know two new creative people and tucking them into our creative process, which usually just involves the two of us. They added humor, technical musical abilities, different perspectives and insights. So, being able to make some great friends and creating with them was my favorite part. What has the reaction been like from fans? They are really digging the album! We just came together as a band again after a long hiatus, and released our first album after all that time. A lot of fans are saying, “And this too?!” It’s like icing on the cake for them! (Or should I say, icing on the gingerbread house?) Though the album is jam packed with classics, is there a favorite one that holds the most significance to you? ‘Lights Blown Out.’ I’m a sucker for sad. We intentionally wanted to create a light-hearted
and fun Christmas album. But for me, I loved this track because it went against the grain of the rest of the songs. I’m newly single and learning how to be at home with being alone. This upcoming Christmas will be my first Christmas in 10 years without a romantic partner and I’m not exactly sure how I’m going to feel. This song explores themes of loss and old memories, and the challenges of letting go and moving on, and I can really relate to all of that right now. You’ll be heading out on tour soon; what should fans be expecting from those upcoming live shows? A whole lot of joy mixed with a lot of gratitude. It’s been a long journey getting the band back together, creating a record, and then heading out on tour to play all of these songs live. I hope that the fans can feel how ecstatic we are to be playing music with each other again. What’s been the highlight of 2019 for you? Our recent headlining tour. It felt like a “coming home” for me. At times, the traveling, long drives, and hotel rooms felt difficult, but I loved arriving in cities, and playing in venues all over the country, remembering how it felt to connect with fans all over. I just love to play! Any special message for fans? Thank you for sharing space with us, for inspiring us with your words of encouragement both inperson and online, and for your continuous support over the years. Keep your heart open and never cease to explore all this lifetime and planet have to offer.

If Stella Santana isn’t already on your radar, allow us to introduce you to your new favorite. From musical inspirations to memorable studio moments, the rising artist opened up about it all. words by VANESSA SALLES photo by JESSICA LEHRMAN
Tell us about your new EP, Yayaya – how would you describe the vibe/sound on it? Sonically, the EP is moody and laid back, but still energetic! Lyrically, I was inspired by different facets of relationships--when it’s good, when it’s bad, when it’s hard to leave, the feeling after you leave… etc. Any memorable moments writing/recording it that you can share with us? So many! I really really really enjoy the mixing process—I sat in on every session, which I probably won’t do moving forward, because my mixing engineer Rachel Alina and I have now developed a rhythm and we can communicate with each other quite effectively but that was such an important part of the creative process for me. Is there a track that holds the most significance to you? It’s impossible to choose - they are all my babies! How would you describe your creative process? Most of the time it’s production first. Then, we figure out the vibe and the melodies/lyrics are last.
Williamsburg, Brooklyn and he started playing guitar and it happened from there. What inspired the concept for the music video? I was inspired by Rhye’s video for their song “Open.” I would play that video on mute with my song over it and realized these are the same feelings. Then, I started to come up with the narrative from there. I’m so lucky and grateful that I have a good friend who let me borrow his house in upstate New York to shoot it! Which artist(s) are you loving lately? I really love Tyler’s album. Also, some friends of mine called “locals only sound” have an album out that I’ve been playing a lot! When it comes to stage presence, which artist(s) are you inspired by? Rosalia is a beast! What’s been the highlight of 2019 for you? Definitely putting out my EP! Any special message for fans? Thank you so much for listening and I can’t wait to keep making more and more stuff for you!
Tell us about your latest single, “All The Time” – what’s the story behind the track? That track was so fun to make and Avi is so fun to work with. We were just in his apartment in

THE DAILY SHUFFLE 10
Tell us about Dollface! What is it about the show that made you want to be involved? When I first read the script, it just felt so relatable to me. It felt like I was reading about the misadventures of me and my girlfriends. I loved that, even though there’s an aspect of the girls’ dating lives played out on the show. At the end of the day, this show is about these four girls and their relationship with each other. For those who haven’t streamed it yet, how would you describe your role as Madison Maxwell? Madison is the type A, serious, driven, and facetious one of the group. She likes to plan and be prepared for everything. When you first meet her, she’s very closed off and angry at Jules for abandoning their friendship. As the series progresses, you start to see why Madison has her walls so built up. She hates feeling vulnerable and she feels so hurt by Jules. It was a fun arc for me throughout the series.
Are there any memorable behind-thescenes moments from set that you can share with us? One of my favorite moments happened in Episode 105. Michael Angarano, plays Steve the stripper. First off, I didn’t even know Michael could dance. He was rehearsing throughout the day but the girls and I hadn’t seen anything. So the reactions that you see on camera are our literal first reactions to seeing Michael. It was amazing. He was fantastic. How would you describe the vibe on set? So chill and amazing! Going to work everyday literally felt like I was just hanging out with my girlfriends. From start to finish, we all just hung out all the time and kind of shot a show somewhere in there, haha! Working with these ladies have been such a pleasure. It was such an incredible experience to work alongside such talented and funny women, who constantly were just trying to make each other better. It was such a special experience.
If Dollface gets greenlit for a second season, what kind of storylines would you want to see explored for Madison? I would love to see Madison truly working on dropping her guard and forgiving herself for not being “perfect” (in her eyes) all the time. I would love to see her work life, how she deals with (spoiler) being lied to by her boyfriend. Honestly, I just want to see more of the girls together and to see what kind of trouble they can get themselves into. Working in such a chaotic field, how important is self-care to you? Self-care is something I overlooked for a long time, thinking, “Just keep going, you’re fine”. I wasn’t fine. I wasn’t checking in with myself and taking the time to take care of ME. So, I now make a very conscious effort every day to take some time for myself. Whether it’s reading, or knitting or working out or even just sitting with myself without my phone and just relaxing. I’ve noticed such a difference in my stress and
anxiety levels since doing so. Everyone, every once in a while, needs to be reminded that we have to put ourselves first. If we aren’t taking care of ourselves, how will be able to truly take care of others to our best ability? What’s been the highlight of your 2019? I feel so very fortunate to say that 2019 has been so good to me. Dollface is a huge highlight; it’s quite literally my dream job and I’ve made friendships that are special to me. So, yeah probably Dollface, and my niece turning one! Any special message to viewers/fans? Thank you. Thank so much for all the love and support. I wouldn’t be here without you guys, so I’m eternally grateful.
katy bellotte words by VANESSA SALLES photos by MARINA BARHAM
First thing’s first, congrats on your newest business venture! Can you tell us a bit more about coming to terms that you needed to do something to change your life and how you found the courage to do so? Thank you so much! It’s been a scary leap of faith, leaving my 9-5, but I’ve never felt more sure about a decision in my life. Truthfully I took the job on a whim, thinking it was what I was ‘supposed to do,’ because freelance is a path that a lot of people look at with a raised brow. Although the job was great and very in my skillset, so to speak, I felt that it was sort of a force for me. With my corporate job and personal digital side hustles, I was essentially working two or three full-time jobs at once. I was wearing myself very thin. I’m such a ‘yes man’ in the sense that I always seem to bite off way more than I can chew, and I’m slowly learning how personally destructive and draining that can be. I was becoming irritable, constantly anxious and stressed. There were very few projects I produced during that time that I was truly proud of because I really stretched my creativity too thin. I finally made the decision after talking to some loved ones that were concerned with my well-being, constantly asking if I’m okay. I knew it was time to make a change! One of my jobs had to go, and I decided that I needed to let go of the corporate world. I could go back to to working corporate one day, but that day is not today! What kind of advice would you give to someone who might be fearful of diving into a creative passion? I would pose this question: What sets your soul on fire? What gives you that fiery feeling in the pit of your stomach that practically screams, “Yes!
This is what I love!”? Chase that feeling. Chase it until your legs give out. You will never regret trying for something that you love, even if you fail. It’s all a part of what will ultimately be the Story of You. Tell us about Katy Bellotte Designs! What are your plans and hopes for it for the future? Katy Bellotte Designs is my newest little venture and currently is a small side hustle. I’ve been designing tattoos for people on the side for several years now, not knowing my handwriting was really something anyone cared much about, to be honest! But I’ve slowly realized that I can begin designing hand-lettered creations for people to wear, post up on their walls and love. Eventually I want to create motivational prints and even potentially clothing. It’s in the works, for sure! I’ll continue to build these projects out in 2020. What has the reaction been like online since sharing your news? Understandably, the reaction to my job change has been mixed! I share very intimate details of my life on the internet, trying to portray myself as being relatable, comforting and motivational for my followers. I knew that if I was ever to quit my 9-5, my followers, many of whom work corporate jobs, would feel that I’m a bit less relatable. However, I think the stigma surrounding freelance is something that needs to be shattered and I intend on doing just that! Truthfully, if I were to remain where I was unhappy in my previous role, I wouldn’t be setting a very good example for anyone. I am now striving not to be relatable per say, but to be someone people look at for inspiration. If I’m
going to be labeled as an ‘influencer,’ I want to do the best possible job of influencing people for the better - to chase dreams and to go on strongly despite their fear. Tell us about your podcast, ‘Thick & Thin’! Can your recall the moment where it became more than just an idea to you? I’ve been getting comments for years from followers encouraging me to create a podcast. My fear was that I didn’t have enough to talk about or wouldn’t have enough time to devote to it, but truly my podcast is the best kind of outlet, my own narrated diary of sorts. In the summer of 2018, I purchased a cheap microphone on Amazon and it collected dust in my apartment for about a month before I decided to take the plunge and start. On my podcast, I ramble in length about what I think and care about on a weekly basis, and somehow people really enjoy it! I have almost 2 million downloads on Thick & Thin to date. I’m really glad I just went for it! You always think you’re not ‘good enough’ to create things and that someone else could do a better job, but we forget that every great creator started out at zero, as a beginner. With topics that are so prevalent in your personal life, are you ever nervous to talk about them/share it with others? Has there ever been an episode that almost didn’t make it online? I feel there is little that I don’t talk about online. I pride myself in talking about the things that are difficult to talk about, that have huge stigmas and taboos surrounding them. However, there was a time in my 10-year internet career that I was hesitant to speak about certain topics: sex, birth control, cellulite, failed relationships. But my frustration surrounding the lack of open conversations
about these things outweighed my fear of what people would think. I basically open myself up to criticism, speaking about these things, but I like to think I’m helping people feel less alone. People often feel alone in their struggles simply because no one wants to speak up about messy or really intimate things. I’ve sometimes said things in videos and podcasts that I’ve gotten very close to deleting or cutting out, but I take a deep breath and remind myself why I’m doing what I’m doing. I remind myself of how timid and fearful I used to be before I knew a lot about sex, dating and body insecurity. I create content like this in hopes that I can help people feel less alone and fearful about very normal insecurities. What does it mean to you to have so many people resonate with you and the podcast? What’s been the highlight of 2019 for you? It means the absolute world to me, having such support on a daily basis. This might sound dramatic, but it honestly gives me faith in humanity. So much hate and destruction occurs on a daily basis, so it’s nice to know that I can still foster a very supportive, loving community despite the current world climate. The highlight of 2019 for me would be finally choosing myself. Being a bit selfish and doing what is right for me, even if it means having to muster up a bit more courage and grow thicker skin.

siobhan
murphy
Starring in Netflix’s Merry Happy Whatever, Siobhan Murphy delivers some of the show’s funniest one-liners. We caught up with the actress to chat behind-the-scenes moments, dream roles and more! words by VANESSA SALLES
Tell us about your new show, ‘Merry Happy Whatever’! Merry Happy Whatever is a brand new Netflix series about the Quinn family over Christmas. We’re an incredibly tight knit family with Dennis Quaid as our stubborn but sweet patriarch, Don Quinn. The show focuses on each of the Quinn kids and their separate struggles that are only brought into sharper focus by the tension and stress that comes around having everyone together over the holidays. What is it about the series that made you want to be involved? The pilot script was one of the funniest ones I’ve read to date. I genuinely laughed out loud and then fell fully in love with each of the characters. It rides that perfect balance between hilarious and heartwarming, which is something I’ve missed from the sitcoms I grew up with. What can you tell us about your role as Patsy? What should viewers be expecting from her? Patsy Quinn is a super sweet, super type A woman on the verge of a holiday induced nervous breakdown! I exaggerate a little but she’s the eldest daughter of the Quinn’s and desperate to fill the shoes of their mom, who’s passed away a few years ago. She cares way too much, but over the course of the series, you get to see where her heart lies and the struggle she and her husband are dealing with. Playing Patsy was one of the most fun challenges I’ve ever encountered as an actor, I adored her! She can be a bit much but her hearts in the right place! What do you hope viewers take away from the show? I sincerely hope the viewers see themselves in
our little dysfunctional family. I think we touch on so many relevant and important issues and I really want our viewers to feel seen and have permission to laugh at themselves if they do! We became a real family in playing these characters and I hope the viewers feel it when they watch. Also, it is the PERFECT show to watch with everyone when you’re together over the holidays! When you think of your ultimate dream role, what comes to mind? Can I please play Carol Burnett in a biopic? Does this exist yet? If not then oh gosh let it be me! I adore that woman and I would be beyond thrilled to get to tell her story. She’s everything! What are you loving on TV lately? What do you want to see more of? The story telling we’re allowed to do now with all the different streaming services is amazing! Lately, I’ve been obsessed with Fleabag, Schitt’s Creek, Pen15, Big Mouth, and Watchmen. I love how many female voices are being given show runner roles and allowed to show us these flawed, messy incredible protagonists, more of that please! What are some of your favorite holiday films? Love, Actually is my jam. I cry every time I watch it, which is a weird vibe for a holiday movie but I can’t help it. Oh and Home Alone, obviously. Any special message for viewers? I just hope our messy TV family makes everyone love their real life family a little bit more!

amy cohen
If Amy Cohen isn’t already on your radar, it’s time to change that. We talked to the rising songstress about her recent EP release, musical inspirations and more. words by VANESSA SALLES
Tell us about your newly released EP, Direction! Any memorable moments while writing/recording it that you can share with us? ‘Direction’ is about learning to trust change and the uncomfortable, yet rewarding process of growing. Writing and recording this EP was such an incredible process. Some of these songs I wrote over three years ago, while others just a few months. Each track on the EP represents a brief stage in my life over the past couple of years. Together, they summarize everything I’ve been through since I’ve started this journey. While recording this EP, there were many laughs and many tears. While recording the intro track, “Oil and Water,” I had to pause between takes because I couldn’t stop crying. But it wasn’t a sad cry- it was a proud cry, because I’ve really come so far since then. Is there a track that holds the most significance to you? I would say “Oil and Water” and “Direction” are tied for the most meaningful songs to me. “Oil and Water” represents leaving a love behind, and “Direction” represents finding and following a new and better love. What has the reaction been like from fans so far? It has been incredible! The support is so surreal. I get videos of high school girls singing my songs together and it’s the best feeling in the world. I’m so excited to play all these songs live for all of my supporters. How would you describe your creative process?
Intimate and intentional. I write to understand my mind and emotions. I don’t write just for the sake of writing. Which artist(s) are you loving lately? Who would you love to get in the studio with? I will forever love Taylor Swift (songwriting genius) and I love the direction she took with “Lover.” Otherwise, I’ve been diving back into my old favorites lately until we get more music! I’ve been listening to Jhené Aiko, 2016 Drake, 2015 Adele, Coldplay, etc. When it comes to stage presence, which artist(s) are you inspired by? I love a simple set where the vocals are strong enough alone. I admire artists like Kiana Ledé, H.E.R., Snoh Aalegra, Jorja Smith, etc. because they don’t need a million dancers to distract from the vocals and the storytelling. That’s how I picture my live sets. What’s been the highlight of 2019 for you? Definitely releasing this EP and celebrating it with all of my friends. With a growing following on social media, what’s the best way for fans to get your attention online? I love chatting with fans! If you’re supporting my project I’m always happy to hear from you. Any special message for fans? THANK YOU! This is just the introduction.
