Buy or sell: where to bet in week 10 B Y C A M E R O N PA R K E R @camerondparker
While Kevin Sumlin continues to mess with me, I’m coming off my best week yet. I’m not an expert by any stretch of the imagination. I’m just a college student who watches too much college football and places bets he can’t afford — like most of y’all. This weekly column is where I will give you my best bets for the week in college football. I am not responsible for any money lost. Last Week: 3 –1 Total: 7–5
#6 Georgia (-9) vs #9 Kentucky Kentucky, I love y’all. It’s been amazing to watch a basketball school like yourself start off 5–0 and reach the top 10 of the College Football Playoff rankings. But I hate to break it to you. Y’all are not a top 10 team. Georgia, on the other hand, is a top five caliber team that just smashed another top 10 team into oblivion. Jake Fromm is starting to play like Jake Fromm from 2017. Georgia is going to expose Kentucky
as a team that is good, but not good enough to compete with the best. Pick: Georgia (-9)
#4 Notre Dame (-9.5) vs Northwestern This pick will either make me look like a genius or a hater. Yes, the Irish have beaten three ranked opponents, but two of those (Stanford and Virginia Tech) are not ranked anymore and have since shown their true colors. Traveling from San
Diego back to Illinois to face a Northwestern team that is in a groove screams trap game to me. Pat Fitzgerald picked up his second win over a ranked opponent last week against Wisconsin and gets the Irish at home on Saturday. The Wildcats haven’t lost by more than a touchdown since Week 2 against Duke. Nine-and-a-half points is way too high. If you look at the four teams currently in the playoff, which coach would I trust the least in a must-win game? Brian Kelly.
Pick: Northwestern (+9.5)
Georgia Tech (-5) vs North Carolina The line has already jumped a full point since its release and by the time this publishes, Georgia Tech will likely be a touchdown favorite. After a rough start, Paul Johnson has his Yellow Jackets running all over the place. Larry Fedora? Not so much. The Tar Heels look nothing like a quality

Heisman watch B Y D O N N A VA N S M O O T
@Dsmoot3D
After yet another big week for the leaders in the Heisman race, the top candidates are now preparing for some of the biggest matchups of the season. Here’s the latest on Tua and everybody else: #13 Tua Tagovailoa, quarterback, No. 1 Alabama
It’s no secret how great Tua has been. His numbers have been spectacular, and they have translated to wins. If there was one asterisk to put on this season, it’s that despite being in the highly regarded SEC, he hasn’t played any serious competition. The Crimson Tide have played against teams like Arkansas State, UL-Lafayette and will play Citadel in two weeks. The strength of schedule argument is a common one when it comes to Nick Saban’s squad. This week, on the other hand, Tagovailoa and Alabama will finally face a formidable test when the Crimson Tide go on the road to Baton Rouge for a matchup with No. 3 LSU, where all eyes will be on the young phenom quarterback in this heavyweight primetime matchup. If the game goes as anticipated, Tagovailoa will have to play in the fourth quarter for the first time since the National Championship game in January. If he is able to show up and show out on Saturday, the Heisman should have Tagovailoa’s name inscribed on it by the end of Sunday.
#1 Kyler Murray, quarterback, No. 7 Oklahoma It was just another day at the office for Kyler Murray. He had another 350-yard game to go along with three touchdowns through the air and one on the ground. What Murray is doing shouldn’t be overlooked. He’s on pace to account for more touchdowns and have a
higher touchdown-to-interception ratio than Baker Mayfield produced last season. Murray is having one of the most dynamic seasons in Oklahoma history. Murray will definitely be in New York when the Heisman announcement is made at the end of the season. The only question posed about that time is whether or not he will be on the team that won the 2018 Big 12 Championship, which is the primary focus of Murray and the Sooners right now. With Texas Tech next on the schedule, Murray will try to continue to be electric on the field and raise the profile of not only his team, but of himself as well.
#7 Dwayne Haskins, quarterback, No. 10 Ohio State
Haskins’ arm took a toll the last time he was on the field. The sophomore quarterback threw the ball an astonishing 73 times. After the loss to Purdue, Haskins’ chances of winning the Heisman took a hit along with Ohio State’s chances of going to the playoffs. However, Haskins can still have a successful season. He is still a top three Heisman candidate. Also, he still has two season-defining games with Michigan State and Michigan — which will be on the road — left on the schedule. Like many of the other candidates, Haskins has had a wonderful season. Once the season gets to this point, deciding the winner becomes a matter of splitting hairs. He’s thrown for 30 touchdowns and only five interceptions, and has compiled more yards than Tua Tagovailoa and Kyler Murray. At this point, Haskins is trying to end the season on the highest note possible and attempting to keep the momentum through the offseason to try and return next year for another climb toward the mountaintop.

rom walking on as a free safety, to becoming a scout team staple, West Virginia’s starting middle linebacker, Shea Campbell, has done nothing but climb a steep ladder since joining the program in 2015. But despite Morgantown’s hometown hero rising from obscurity as a walk-on to one of the top defensive contributors, something’s now missing on the “Mountaineer Mantrip” pregame parade and in the locker room at Milan Puskar Stadium: his most important teammate. Shea’s younger brother, and fellow walk-on linebacker, Jonah Campbell, joined West Virginia in 2016. Similar to Shea, Jonah received no playing time in his initial years as a Mountaineer. After the 2017 season concluded, Jonah departed from the football team to pursue a medical degree and a career as a surgeon.
“When he was here, it was nice because I knew I had somebody, always,” Shea said. “When he said he was done, it caught me off guard a little bit. It was frustrating, but he and I are extremely close, and I always want what’s best for him.” No longer teammates on the field, the brothers still live together on West Virginia’s campus. Rather than suiting up in full padding and mingling on the sidelines, Jonah now positions himself in the stands as Shea’s most ardent supporter. In their first season apart, Shea continues communication on game days by calling Jonah on the field prior to warm-ups. Now an outsider, Jonah has witnessed all the success unfold. After experiencing elevated playing time, Shea is enjoying a breakout season with 19 total tackles and one interception in five outings. “It’s really been a blessing,” Jonah
said. “But it’s hard because you see him have success at the beginning of the season, and then you’ve been waiting for him to get his chance again, and he makes the most of it. Watching him play — he deserves it, he’s earned it. There’s no doubt anymore, he’s the guy.” Shea, the quieter of the two siblings, is never one to shy away from personal goals. The redshirt junior is focused on leaving college with degrees in multidisciplinary studies and civil engineering, but he’s additionally excelling with the speed and physicality of the collegiate game in his first year of on-field action. “I knew that I would get my opportunity, but I wasn’t expecting it to be like this,” Shea said. “I changed positions, so there was a lot of physical development that was needed in order for me to be the most physical I can be on

Keys to the game: No. 13 West Virginia B Y W I L L S L AY T O N @willsdebeast
Any hopes of Texas reaching the College Football Playoff were dashed by the Oklahoma State Cowboys last Saturday. However, that does not mean the Longhorns have nothing to play for. The team controls its own destiny with regard to the Big 12 Championship, something the team has not won since 2009. If Texas wins out, it will make an appearance in the game with the chance to make a New Year’s Six bowl game and energize the fan base. In order to do that, however, the team will need to take care of business against No. 13 West Virginia at home. Here are your keys to the game: Minimize Will Grier
In last year’s matchup in Morgantown, the Longhorns were cut a massive break when then-junior Will Grier went down early in the game after breaking his middle finger. In that game, the Longhorns reached bowl eligibility for the first time under Tom Herman. But this season, Texas will not be so lucky, as Grier enters this game regarded as one of the best quarterbacks in the country.

The Longhorn defense made senior Taylor Cornelius of Oklahoma State look much better than advertised, allowing chunk plays and showing an inability to contain the run. A much more talented West Virginia offence will give the defense plenty of new problems. The only way the Longhorns can win this game is by limiting the effectiveness of Grier and the potent offense of West Virginia. For a team with a talented secondary and an aggressive front four, this is very possible but will take excellent coaching and a quality game plan.
Dominate the trenches for the offensive line If the Longhorns are going to win this game, they will need a masterful performance by sophomore quarterback Sam Ehlinger, but he’ll need help. The best way to aid Ehlinger is to open up lanes for the running backs and to keep the pocket clean so the ball can be delivered downfield. That leaves the offensive line with a big role to play and makes it responsible for how well the offense performs. If the offensive line performs to its
fullest potential, the Longhorns will have no issues moving the ball against West Virginia, both in the air and on the ground. Additionally, a clean showing from the line will also safeguard Ehlinger’s health moving forward this season.

special
In these kinds of games, where both opponents are ranked within the top 20, the outcome generally comes down to the wire. This game does not look like it will be a blowout for either team, making special teams incredibly important. Special teams has already played a vital role in the Longhorns’ success this season. No one has forgotten freshman kicker Cameron Dicker’s game-winning kick against Oklahoma. If Texas plans on pulling off the upset at home and remaining in the driver’s seat for an appearance in the Big 12 title game, the team will need a complete performance on special teams, including high quality punts, clutch kicks and excellent showings from the punt and kickoff teams.

omenihu’s reason to return BY ALEX BRISEÑO @alexxbriseno

angela wang | the daily texan staff Senior defensive end Charles Omenihu reacts to the snap in the Longhorns’ three-point loss to Oklahoma State. In the last four games, Omenihu has racked up 6.0 sacks 9.5 tackles for loss.
n
o matter where Charles Omenihu is, he’s usually hard to miss. The 6-foot-6-inch, 275-pound defensive end displays an all-business, level-headed confidence on and off the field. But that’s not his trademark. That comes once he starts speaking. Three simple words have become Omenihu signature anytime he steps in front of a microphone: You feel me? The phrase isn’t limited to a specific question. It comes naturally, at any point in a sentence, and most recently found its way into the bye week when he was asked if he had any plans for the off week. “I don’t really think ahead too much,” Omenihu said. “I stay in the present day because the day has enough trouble as it is, you feel me? When you think too far ahead, the trouble you have today might kill you.” Throughout the bye week, players like freshman Caden Sterns headed home to see family members, friends and their dogs. Others spent a day at Austin City Limits. As for Omenihu, he watched film. “It’s fun,” the senior said with a straight face. He was asked why he didn’t go to the beach or do anything to get away from the strenuous season.
“Right now I ain’t got money for the beach,” Omenihu said. He could have beach money, though. In fact, he could have more than beach money. At the conclusion of the 2017 season, Omenihu flirted with the idea of declaring for the NFL Draft. He requested evaluations from the NFL’s College Advisory Committee but didn’t like what he got back. “When you get a grade that isn’t as high as you want, that’s a factor,” Omenihu said. “You look at the tape and you have to be honest with yourself. Those dudes in the NFL aren’t playing games with you.” It was obvious. The NFL wasn’t exactly feeling Charles, and he wasn’t feeling Sundays either, not quite yet at least. Omenihu isn’t the only player who was advised to return for another year of college ball. However, not every player listens to that advice, and instead opts to enter the draft for an opportunity to secure a life-changing amount of money. Omenihu wasn’t one of those players. He didn’t have much trouble accepting he needed to return to Texas for one last season. “You have to be honest with yourself. If you’re not honest with yourself, who is?” Omenihu said. “You have to be real with yourself and understand that they aren’t playing with you. It’s not a joke. Everybody is good.
Nobody is average. They’re there for a reason, especially when you’re going against guys who have been there for eight years, and you’re just walking in.” One year later, Omenihu’s honesty is paying off, and even more so in Texas’ last four games. The senior has recorded 6.0 sacks, 9.5 tackles for loss and four quarterback hurries in the previous four matchups. Most importantly, he continues to improve his draft stock. “It’s great that he stayed,” senior Chris Nelson said. “His mindset has changed tremendously. His preparation has been great. On Saturdays, he’s quicker, faster. I think he feels confident in himself when he walks out on Saturdays.” There won’t be a decision to be made after this season, Omenihu will declare for the NFL Draft, and he’ll have something many NFL players leave college without: a college degree. “This is a guy that’s going to get his degree, he’s going to improve his draft stock, he’s going to have the best season he’s had since he’s been on the 40 Acres and he’s going to help us achieve our best season that we have had around here in the last five years,” head coach Tom Herman said. “So it’s a win/win/win/ win/win for everybody.”

NO.2 NO.1
Oklahoma Sooners The Oklahoma Sooners are back to the top spot of the Big 12 Power Rankings after a second straight convincing victory in conference play. This week, Kansas State was the victim of 51-14 beatdown thanks to 398 total yards and four touchdowns from Kyler Murray. The Sooners have found their rhythm since the Texas loss and are moving full steam ahead in the second half of the season.
RECYCLE your copy of
West Virginia Mountaineers The Mountaineers are back on track following their first loss of the season. West Virginia picked off Baylor quarterback Charlie Brewer three times and ended up with a season-high 58 points in the Thursday night victory. The Mountaineers’ Big 12 Championship hopes are on the line this week with a matchup in Austin against the Longhorns.
NO.3
Texas Longhorns Texas suffered its first loss since Week One against Maryland following a failed comeback attempt against the Oklahoma State Cowboys in Stillwater. With a full starting lineup back for the West Virginia game, there is more reason to believe the Longhorns could get back to their winning ways on Saturday.
NO.5
Iowa State Cyclones Don’t look now, but the Iowa State Cyclones have won three straight, including two Top 25 victories. The Cyclones are averaging 39.3 points per game during their win streak and have looked like a completely new team since their 1–3 start to the season. If they can win out, the Cyclones may find themselves in the Big 12 title game. The biggest test of the season comes against Texas, but the Cyclones have to take on Kansas and Baylor before traveling to Austin.
NO.7
Baylor Bears There is no other way to put it: Baylor got whooped Saturday. Baylor allowed 58 points to West Virginia and turned the ball over four times, a recipe that will likely always result in a loss. Unfortunately for the Bears, they still have Iowa State, Texas Tech and Oklahoma State remaining on the schedule.
NO.9
Kansas State Wildcats As for the other team in Kansas, things aren’t looking as bright. The Wildcats are coming off their worst loss of the season and their fourth loss in the last five games. Kansas State continues to struggle on offense, only scoring over 25 points just three times this season.
NO.4
Oklahoma State Cowboys Two things were learned following Oklahoma State’s upset victory against Texas: The Cowboys are really good following a bye week, and head coach Mike Gundy does not care about Twitter. Regardless, Oklahoma State put up 502 yards against perhaps the best defense in the Big 12. Wide receiver Tylan Wallace finished with 222 yards receiving and is beginning to turn heads as one of the more underrated weapons in the Big 12.
NO.6
Texas Tech Red Raiders Texas Tech suffered its third loss of the year this past weekend. The Red Raiders are still lacking consistent quarterback play as Alan Bowman threw three interceptions against the Cyclones. The road only gets tougher for Kliff Kingsbury’s squad, as Tech faces Oklahoma and Texas in the next two weeks.
NO.8
Kansas Jayhawks
Kansas shocked the masses with a victory over Gary Patterson and the TCU Horned Frogs last week to improve to 3–5, which is shaping into the Jayhawks’ best season in recent memory. With just one more win this year, Kansas will have its most victories in a season since 2009. Perhaps things are turning around in Lawrence.
NO.10
TCU Horned Frogs
It is more than surprising to see a Gary Patterson-led team in the bottom of the Big 12 rankings. But it’s unbelievably true as TCU lost to Kansas this week. The Horned Frogs are currently 3–5 and are experiencing their roughest week, month and season since joining the Big 12.

Although the high-flying offense generates the headlines for the Mountaineers, it’s the elevated performance of the defense that has pushed West Virginia into the discussion for the Big 12 Championship. A year after ranking seventh in the Big 12 in scoring defense, the Mountaineers rank first this season. One of the key members of that turnaround has been linebacker David Long Jr. Through seven games, Long leads the team in both tackles and tackles for loss, with 68 and 12.5 respectively. His remarkable season has even earned him recognition as a semifinalist for the Butkus Award, given to the best linebacker in college football. Like most college linebackers, Long is strong and possesses impressive tackling ability. But what makes him so successful in the Big 12 is his sideline-to-sideline speed, which is beneficial for stopping the conference’s quick, spread out attacks.
Wide receiver David Sills V, one of the nation’s top receivers and Grier’s favorite target, challenges Big 12 defenses every week. In particular, Sills is a menace on jump balls and inside the red zone, where he uses his 6-foot-4-inch frame to separate him from smaller defensive backs. That unique physical ability is what made Sills so successful during his breakout 2017 season, when he hauled in 18 touchdowns on 980 yards receiving. The former junior college transfer is now the emphasis of the opposing defense’s game plan, but it hasn’t slowed his production. Sills leads the Mountaineers in receptions and receiving yards and is tied for the most receiving touchdowns in the Big 12 with nine. Receivers faster than Sills can be found across the Big 12, but few can match his ability to find the end zone at such an efficient rate.
Experience scatters the West Virginia secondary. At four of the five positions in the defensive backfield, the Mountaineers carry upperclassmen. But the lone underclassmen, sophomore safety Kenny Robinson Jr. has held his own. After finishing his freshman season as a starter, Robinson has emerged as a talented player at the free safety spot for Tony Gibson’s defense. He’s collected the most tackles of any defensive back and is also tied for the team lead in interceptions with two. This weekend, Robinson will go against a Texas offense that forces talented playmakers to challenge him. Speedy receivers like Devin Duvernay and physical wideouts like Collin Johnson present a difficult task for any defensive back, especially a young one. There is good news for Robinson, however. In last season’s game against the Longhorns, he did intercept Sam Ehlinger for a 94-yard touchdown.
Entering the season, quarterback Will Grier garnered attention as a potential Heisman candidate thanks to his superb talent and “Grier7Heisman” website put together by the athletic program. And while players like Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa and Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray have surpassed Grier in the Heisman conversation, the Charlotte, North Carolina, native has still turned heads with an outstanding season that has him regarded as one of the nation’s best quarterbacks. Grier has thrown for 2,272 yards and 25 touchdowns through the air through seven games, earning him a spot on the Maxwell Award semifinalist list, an award given to the top player in college football each season. He doesn’t carry any quick running ability that makes him difficult to contain, but Grier stands as one of the best pocket passers in the entire country. His passing efficiency rating (188.7), yards per attempt (9.9) and completion percentage (70.3) all rank inside the top five in each respective categories.
