WHAT’S INSIDE

here did the time go? It seems like just yesterday we were walking to class in the sweltering August heat, and now it’s already time for finals — can I get a collective, “hallelujah!”? But before you can get to whatever you do over Winter Break, you have to make it through, and make the grade on, your exams. Here’s how to do it: start by creating the ultimate study playlist. (Check out Alex’s awesome suggestions on page 9). Step two: get out of your dorm or apartment! Instead, head to one of our favorite coffee shops on page 8. Whether you like background music, need Wi-Fi or just want a really good cup of joe, we’ve got it all. Since this is our last issue of the semester, we’ve also included some winter break tips, including holiday-themed events in the next few weeks (pg. 3 and

What’s in Your Pantry?

Enjoy the tastes of fall with easy, delicious chicken Allie Murphy Longhorn Life

With the transition of fall into winter comes certain cravings: one of which, is delicious roasted chicken. It’s the epitome of homemade comfort food—and the warmth and aroma of a classic roasted chicken are vital parts of the autumn season. This recipe captures that fall feeling, but is simple enough for culinary novices. Case in point: instead of buying a whole chicken that will likely go to waste, the flavorful thighs used below are cheaper and perfect for a single serving. Throw some mashed potatoes into the mix, and you’ll have a cozy meal to help you relax after a long day of studying! You’ll need: a small bowl, a spoon, a sharp knife, a cutting board, paper towels and a cake pan for roasting.

Easy Herb Roasted Chicken

Makes 1-2 servings Ingredients: 2 chicken thighs 1 ½ teaspoons fresh parsley, finely chopped

1 ½ teaspoons fresh thyme, finely chopped 1 ½ teaspoons fresh rosemary, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 teaspoon white or rice wine vinegar 2 tablespoons olive oil, plus more for drizzling A pinch of crushed red pepper flakes Kosher salt Directions: 1. First, preheat the oven to 400 degrees. 2. Combine the parsley, thyme, rosemary, garlic, red pepper, vinegar and olive oil in a small bowl to form a paste. Salt the paste to your liking; I like salty food, so I used about one teaspoon. 3. Pat the chicken thighs with a paper towel to remove any excess moisture, then place in pan. Using your fingers, work your way underneath the chicken skin. 4. Next, smear the herb paste evenly under the skin until you’ve used it all. Drizzle a little olive oil over the chicken thighs and massage the oil into the skin, then sprinkle with salt. 5. Bake for 35 minutes, or until a knife cuts into the meat easily and the juices run clear. Chow down, and enjoy!

Both beers are currently served bottled, but will be available on tap later this month. Katrina Funtanilla/Longhorn Life

While you’re humming “Jingle Bell Rock” and cuddling in your Snuggie, don’t forget the warm, fuzzy feeling that comes from giving back to your community. Austin has plenty of options — from animal shelters to food banks — to help you help others this holiday season.

GIVE SOME LOVE TO THE ANIMALS OF AUSTIN Austin Pets Alive! is a no-kill shelter that saves abandoned cats and dogs facing euthanasia, by training, feeding and caring for the animals until they are adopted. They can always use volunteers to help with construction projects or animal training. If you’re headed out of Austin for the break, Austin Pets Alive! has a lengthy pet wish-list that includes chew toys, glass cleaner and kitty litter. Swing by and drop off these items before you head home for the holidays.

SAVE A LIFE The holidays are a popular time for blood drives on the 40

Acres, so keep an eye out for upcoming drives by student organizations. On Dec. 18, the Natural Sciences Council will be hosting a drive outside of Jester. Giving blood is a simple — and time-efficient — way to help the Austin community this holiday season.

DONATE TO A LOCAL FOOD PANTRY El Buen Samaritano Episcopal Mission is a unique center that provides health care, ESL education and food assistance to Hispanic families and individuals facing economic difficulties. El Buen will provide meals to needy families for up to six months, along with emotional support, healthy recipes and educational materials. People can take classes on healthy eating, receive counseling and attend adult education classes. Volunteers are always needed during the holidays. You can also drop off monetary donations or food items every Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at their location at 7000 Woodhue Dr. Items on the organization’s wish-list include cereal boxes, pancake mix boxes,

oatmeal and vegetable soups.

BE AN ELF USPS’s Operation Santa has been helping spread Christmas cheer to needy children since 1912. At participating Post Offices’ across the United States, anyone can volunteer to be one of Santa’s elves by sponsoring a Christmas present for a local child that has mailed a wish-list to Santa. Check out beanelf. org to find a participating post office, and sift through letters to find one that’s particularly moving to you.

ADOPT A FAMILY It’s never easy to start from nothing; so this holiday season consider helping out a family affected by the Bastrop wildfires earlier this year. From shelter to shoes, needs vary widely from family to family, but anything (even a little warm holiday cheer) can help to get these families back on their feet. Visit adoptafamily.us to find a list of local familes and register to sponsor any necessities or gifts these families might need this winter.

inals are here, and this time around, you may feel the need to leave the comfort of your dorm room or apartment to pull off that 4.0. Grab your backpack

and head to one of these nearby Longhorn Life-approved coffee shops for a nice change of pace and a great cup of joe.

EINSTEIN BROS. BAGELS Located near the corner of Guadalupe and 24th Street, these brothers can hook you up with a well-lit alternative to hunkering away in a dim dorm room. PROS: Good lighting, strong coffee, quiet background music CONS: Uncomfortable metal chairs and no connection to Wi-Fi BEST FOR: Catching up on reading material and computing math problems

CAFFÉ MEDICI Tucked subtly away on the Drag, it’s easy to skip over this hidden treasure. Stop in for a quality roasted coffee and an artsy, relaxed feel. PROS: Free Wi-Fi, great coffee, polite service, comfortable sofas CONS: Loud customers, and it’s possible you’ll get stuck with a hard, metal chair. BEST FOR: People who prefer a medium between library-quiet and the average restaurant noise level. You can do anything from essays to chemistry homework here.

PRUFROCK’S JAVA CITY Because it’s attached to the corner of the PCL, this is easily accessible for

residents of Jester and other residence halls on the 40 Acres. PROS: Open feel, Wi-Fi access, lots of seating options CONS: Background music can randomly get loud, and there are a few rushes throughout the day. However, ear buds can easily fix this issue. BEST FOR: Quick reviews and group studying.

BRIGGO COMPUTERGENERATED COFFEE SHOP Briggo offers coffee for the modern age; simply download the app from their website and create your perfect cup of joe. That order is then sent to a barista-mimicking robot in the FAC, and you’ll be notified when your order is ready. The machine isn’t quite ready yet, but keep an eye out for it in the next couple of weeks. PROS: Quality coffee, no lines, location versatility. (You can either study in the FAC or take your coffee back to your place). CONS: The only real con here would be for those who are fearful of robots. BEST FOR: People who hate standing in lines, on-campus residents and those who prefer studying at home.

Preparing for finals

The perfect music playlist for your late-night study sessions Alex Vickery Longhorn Life

Finals. Did you feel your stomach drop when you read that word? How about nerves, anxiety or dread? The key to a successful all-nighter (and—let’s hope—an A): a study-friendly music playlist. Check out our suggestions for tunes to take the pressure off and help you get through the rest of your cramming—I mean, studying.

1. “Blindsided” by Bon Iver

Anytime you want to be serenaded into serenity, look no further than the indie-folk stylings of Bon Iver. The band’s name was derived from a French phrase meaning “good winter,” so it’s only natural that it provides warmth when you’re cuddled up in the library in your sweats. Another tip: take a study break and go for a walk with Bon Iver as your soundtrack, and you’ll feel refreshed in no time. Similar to Bon Iver: Sufjan Stevens, James Vincent McMorrow, Fleet Foxes

2. “Dream of Thaw” by Balmorhea

A lot of students prefer instrumental music because they think it’s less distracting. The eloquent acoustic sounds of Balmorhea are gentle enough to let studying take the forefront in your mind. Each instrumental band has a different style, from classical to rock or electronic sounds; it’s just a matter of finding which fits your studying needs. Similar to Balmorhea: God Is An Astronaut, El Ten Eleven, Explosions in the Sky, Pretty Lights

3. “Fools” by The Temper Trap

Known primarily for their indie hit “Sweet Disposition” (which should definitely be on repeat on your playlist), the Australian band The Temper Trap has a knack for soft, catchy melodies. The song “Fools” is no exception. Something about singer Johnathon Aherne’s airy voice and the dreamy combination of guitar, drums and piano is captivating.

Heck, just put their whole album “Conditions” on repeat. Similar to The Temper Trap: Death Cab for Cutie, Band of Horses

4. “Champagne Supernova” by Matt Pond PA

A classic Oasis cover never gets old, and sometimes familiar sounds can keep your brain from exploding. No matter how familiar you are with this song, the sound of rushing water and soft guitar at the beginning and the orchestral sounds throughout are sure to put a relaxed smile on your face … now get back to studying! Similar to Matt Pond PA: Radiohead, Dave Matthews Band

5. “Imagine” by Jack Johnson

The folk acoustic sounds and soft voice of Jack Johnson are sure to put one at ease no matter when or where you’re listening to him; so it would only make sense to add him to your studying playlist! Plus, the beautiful lyrics of John Lennon never go out of style. There’s nothing like finding a sweet new take on a great oldie. Similar to Jack Johnson: John Mayer, Ben Harper, Colbie Caillat, Boyce Avenue

6. “Ride (Tiesto Remix)” by Cary Brothers

Music in the electronic genres—think house, trance, techno and now dubstep—often have catchy beats and minimal lyrics. Just like people get carried away in clubs all over the world, allow your mind to flow along with the beat as you study. Tiesto’s trance sounds in this remix are soothing enough to ease stress, and yet hyper enough to keep you awake — the perfect combination when cracking open those textbooks. Similar to Cary Brothers: Kaskade, Moby, Armin Van Buuren

7. “Cartwheels” by The Reindeer Section

Fun fact: The Reindeer Section is a Scottish indie-rock group formed by Snow Patrol’s lead

singer, Gary Lightbody. You’ll recognize the same voice that captivated people in his sweet, melodic love songs on Snow Patrol’s albums. He does the same on this song, which was featured on “The O.C.’s” soundtrack. Similar to The Reindeer Section: Snow Patrol, City and Colour, The Perishers

8. “I Turn My Camera On” by Rock Kills Kid

Page 9

What’s your favorite study song? Angela Wu Li geology freshman “Glosoli” by Sigur Ros

James McEnelly radio-television-film junior “You’re Not Alone” by Nobuo Uematsu

If your late-night listening leans towards alternative rock, then consider Rock Kills Kid’s cover of Spoon’s “I Turn My Camera On.” The beats are strong and forcible, yet there’s a flow that’s easy on the ears and brain. Can’t you hear it telling you to “Keep on cramming on?” Well, something like that. Similar to Rock Kills Kid: Kings of Leon, Arcade Fire, Coldplay

9. “Boa Sorte” by Vanessa da Mata and Ben Harper

In this modern take on Brazilian bossa nova, Ben Harper joins Brazilian songstress Vanessa da Mata to create this soothing pop track. Bossa nova, which emerged in the mid-20th century out of samba and jazz, offers one of the most unique sounds in today’s music scene. Michael Bublé and Nelly Furtado’s “Quando Quando Quando” and the classic “The Girl From Ipanema,” should also not be missed. Similar to Vanessa de Mata: Sigur Ros, Federico Aubele

Erica Banda electrical and computer engineering sophomore “No Hay Nadie Mas” by Reik

Josef Weimholt law student Classical music station on Pandora

Rachel Marek human development junior

10. “Shadowland” by Nitin Sawhney ft. Ojos de Brujo

Indian-British musician and composer Nitin Sawhney produces a wide variety of music, including instrumental pieces, songs in different languages and collaborations with popular artists like Imogen Heap and Paul McCartney. Sawhney’s “Shadowland” is a mix of meditative Indian influences and upbeat drums that will put your mind at peace. No need for yoga, though. Studying to his music will never get boring with the eclectic mix of mesmerizing beats. Similar to Nitin Sawhney: Karsh Kale, Bombay Dub Orchestra

Getting involved on campus

New crew encourages you to ‘dance with us’ Christine Imperatore LONGHORN LIFE

I

magine you’re walking through campus, trying to get to your 2 p.m. literature class. You hear the faint sounds of LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem” starting to fill the air, and, before you know it, the person in front of you drops their backpack and starts grooving to the music. All of a sudden, a few more passersby start to join in, all performing the exact same choreography. The courtyard in front of the Tower has literally transformed into a dance floor before your eyes. Think this is pure imagination? Think again. Thanks to the antics of Deviance Dance Crew, it’s not unlikely to see Longhorns busting a move on the 40 Acres these days. “We want to give memorable performances no matter where they are,” said co-founder Ugeo Williams, a sociology and youth and community studies junior. Deviance Dance Crew founders Williams and Demetrius White met in January 2010 through a mutual friend while waiting for a bus to head downtown with a group of friends. “When I met him, he had headphones in his ears and was dancing,” White, an American studies junior, said. The two later bonded over their mutual love of dance. This past summer, Williams and White started creating choreography together just for fun. As the new

school year approached, the pair realized they might be onto something and decided to give their moves an audience. And Deviance Dance Crew was born. “When we started out, it was in our mission statement to be the best performance group on campus,” White said. “There’s no point in starting something if you’re not going to strive to be the best.” The dance crew likes to incorporate many different styles into their performances, drawing inspiration from the skills and talent of their members. While Williams specializes in lyrical hip-hop, White likes

to add some “vogue-ing” to group performances. The crew mainly focuses on hip-hop, but is open to any style brought in by new members. “We’re very performance-driven, so we’re just looking for that spark,” Williams said. “So anyone that can do that for us is welcome to join.” White and Williams have managed to take their fledgling organization quite far in such a short amount of time. Through word-ofmouth recruiting and campus performances, Deviance Dance Crew ended up with 15 members this

semester — and they are always looking to add more, even those with little dance background. The crew made its official debut at the Queer People of Color and Allies annual Bloq Party, after Williams contacted the event chair and asked if they could perform. “We performed ‘End of Time’ by Beyonce for our first performance, and it felt great,” Williams said. “We started out strong, but knew we could be stronger.” Since then, Deviance has honed its skills through performances at the Federation of Gay and Lesbian Sports annual Halloween

party and the University’s first-ever Black Homecoming Weekend. And they aren’t stopping there. Deviance has some big plans to expand and make the group more prominent on campus in 2012. The group hopes to start a yearly tradition of a spring showcase in either March or April. Though it’s still a work in progress, they hope to incorporate several different dance styles and invite other campus performance groups to participate in the event. They also are working to coordinate some surprise flash mob performances. “All the world’s a stage, and we’re always performing,” White said. Although White and Williams have just two more years at UT, they plan to leave a legacy with Deviance Dance Crew and hope to stay involved as alumni. “I don’t think either of us feels comfortable graduating and leaving Deviance Dance Crew behind unless it’s the best,” White said. And they are definitely well on their way to achieving that goal, as the group continues to grow within the community and recruit new members with unique dance styles. “Come dance with us; don’t be shy. We’re not intimidating,” White said. “I think everybody can dance and everybody should dance.” Anyone interested can contact Deviance Dance Crew by email at deviancedance@yahoo.com or approach them after a performance.

ure faculty and staff don’t get the same five-week Winter Break as the students, but when thousands of undergrads and grads leave by mid-December, the quieter 40 Acres will certainly feel like a break has started. So during this time in between semesters, faculty and staff members should take advantage of the calm and consider broadening their plethora of knowledge by taking a class. Whether your motivation is part of a New Year’s Resolution, a fun and educational gift to yourself or simply a way to fill your downtime, the array of classes through Continuing and Innovative Education at UT offer interesting (and affordable) options for trying something new, learning new skills and experiencing new entertainment. From computer classes to boot camps, Continuing and Innovative Education has something for everyone. Space is still available in all online courses and most upcoming and early-in-thespring-semester classes, so visit utexas. edu/ce for the full list and to sign up. Here are some of our suggestions to help you get started:

5 Things I’ve Learned

Keisha Bentley Assistant Professor Department of Educational Psychology Department of African and African Diaspora Studies

1

Wear comfortable shoes. I had to be honest with myself; my lectures are more intimidating than provocative when I am grimacing with every step.

2

If I assume that everyone knows slightly less than I think they do, I won’t skip steps in my explanations, and everyone leaves the room with the same understanding of the work. Students have little reason to have in-depth knowledge of most of the topics I cover – even when they are well prepared for class. My best students ask questions (letting me know exactly what they do not know) and

make comments in class (giving me the opportunity to praise or correct them).

3

Psychology is personal. Sometimes you need to self-disclose, but not too much. My classes may be therapeutic, but they are not therapy. SSB, fifth floor. Use it.

4

Don’t be afraid to broach uncomfortable subjects. Who said that

learning is supposed to be a cozy experience? Passionate, lively discourse is part of the learning process.

5

Fight self-sabotage by discussing it before it happens. As faculty, we see the indicators: missed classes, over-committing at work or extracurricular activities, break-ups in the midst of final exams. I remind my students that inviting drama in your life will only leave you with

disappointing grades, a headache and a large cell phone bill.

Colleges defend humanities amid tight budgets Stephanie Reitz Associated Press

HARTFORD, Conn. — Like many humanities advocates, Abbey Drane was disheartened but not surprised when Florida’s governor recently said its tax dollars should bolster science and high-tech studies, not “educate more people who can’t get jobs in anthropology.” Drane, a 21-year-old anthropology major at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, has spent years defending her choice to pursue that liberal arts field. And now, as states tighten their allocations to public universities, many administrators say they’re feeling pressure to defend the worth of humanities, too, and shield the genre from budget cuts. One university president has gone as far as donating $100,000 of her own money to offer humanities scholarships at her school. Florida Gov. Rick Scott’s comments last month cut to the heart of the quandary: whether emphasizing science, math and medical fields gives students the best career prospects and a high-tech payback to society, and whether humanities fields are viewed as more of an indulgence than a necessity amid tight budget times. “You can definitely feel the emphasis on campus, even just based on where

the newest buildings go, that there is a drive toward the sciences, engineering and (the) business school,” said Drane, a senior from Plymouth, Mass. “I’m constantly asked what job opportunities I’ll have in anthropology or what I’m going to do with my degree, and I tell people that it’s giving me a skill set and critical thinking you can apply to anything.” Humanities studies peaked in U.S. colleges in the 1960s and started dwindling in the 1970s as more students pursued business and technology and related fields. Today, more than 20 percent of each year’s bachelor’s degrees are granted in business; in humanities, it’s about 8 percent. Liberal arts colleges, too, have declined. A study published in 2009 by Inside Higher Ed said that of 212 liberal arts colleges identified in 1990, only 137 were still operating by 2009. At Amherst College in western Massachusetts, a healthy endowment makes closing the doors a remote possibility at best. But its president, Carolyn “Biddy” Martin, experienced the same concerns about the humanities in her previous job as chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and was tapped this year to serve on a commission for the American Academy of Arts & Sciences to review the issue. Martin said many universities

“People feel like there are no real careers open for people studying in the liberal arts, and I don’t think that’s true at all.” - John Beck, philosophy senior at the University of Connecticut

struggle with declining enrollment in those fields, making the classes an easy budget target if their worth is not defended. “There are more and more people in higher education — and I hope political leaders — who are understanding that an over-leaning emphasis on the sciences to the expense of the humanities is not a good thing for the country,” she said. Therein lays the debate for many, though, including Gov. Scott in Florida, who is unapologetic about his push to direct tax dollars toward rapidly growing science, technology, engineering and math fields, known collectively as STEM. And since state governments control nearly two-thirds of all higher education funding, according to the National Governors Association, their embrace or disregard for humanities can affect the study paths of hundreds of thousands of students. The governors’ organization published recommendations for states this year on how to align their higher education priorities with their labor markets and economic development, citing Minnesota, North Carolina, Ohio and Washington for “bold, comprehensive strategies” in those efforts. It did not advise state governments to move money from humanities, but said it’s “often challenging” to get the universities to participate in economic development, partly because of “their emphasis on broad liberal arts education.” Advocates say STEM fields also provide tangible returns for states, universities and businesses through patent royalties, new products and the prestige of achieving scientific breakthroughs — paybacks far less evident among, say, new intellectual insights

by scholars of Geoffrey Chaucer’s literature, devotees of Frederic Chopin’s nocturnes or adherents to Jean-Paul Sartre’s existentialist views. “People feel like there are no real careers open for people studying in the liberal arts and I don’t think that’s true at all,” said John Beck, 20, a senior from Newton, Mass., who’s majoring in philosophy at the University of Connecticut. His father and two grandparents are doctors, and his mother and brother are both pharmaceutical scientists. He is double majoring in economics and plans to attend law school, a decision that eased his parents’ concerns about his philosophy studies because they see a legal career as a tangible way to support himself. He sees it as a good use of his philosophy degree, too, though he says he would have been perfectly content to pursue teaching, public service or other fields to which many other philosophy majors gravitate. To Susan Herbst, students shouldn’t have to choose between picking a field they love and one that offers them the best shot at a job. She believes humanities does both, and feels so strongly about it that she and her husband donated $100,000 this year to provide scholarships limited to students in those fields. “The humanities are where people learn about ethics and values and critical thinking,” said Herbst, the president of the University of Connecticut. “The truth is that for all of these students going into the STEM fields or other social sciences or business, if they didn’t have the humanities, they don’t know why they’re doing what they do. The humanities really teach us how we’re supposed to live and why what we do matters.”

UT RESEARCH BRIEFLY Prof. builds prosthetics that give soldiers chance to walk University of Texas at Austin mechanical engineering professor Rick Neptune is a leader in designing and building prosthetics for injured soldiers. With the help of graduate students and veteran rehabilitation centers, Neptune has been instrumental in giving military men and women who were injured in the line of duty a chance to walk, run, jump and even play sports again. Each prosthetic is designed and built specifically for the individuals based on height, weight and severity of the injury, using a special nylon powder to create a malleable, comfortable material. They are created to accommodate each person’s budget, as well. According to the the Cockrell School of Engineering’s website, Neptune received funding from the U.S. Department of Defense to create prosthetics that give soldiers functional mobility that was lost during service. Each day, Neptune and his team help more than 100 soldiers walk again, allowing them to return to an active lifestyle. Neptune’s work with prosthetics enables doctors across the nation to offer more personalized service to injured servicemen and women.

Higher Ed Briefly Students no longer need to give professor snacks SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A California university professor can no longer demand snacks from students taking his psychology classes. Sacramento State professor George Parrott has demanded snacks from his students for 39 years. Students were told of the snack demand on the first day of class. But two weeks ago he walked out of his Psychology 101 lab class because there were no snacks. University spokeswoman Kimberly Nava says members of the psychology department at California State University, Sacramento decided Parrott’s decision to walk out of class was unacceptable and the dean told him to stop. The Sacramento Bee reports Parrott’s requirement was his

to create the Cloud Computing Research Center, a program dedicated to developing cloud-based technologies for research. Cloud computing allows users to save and access files on a virtual server from any computer with Internet access. The research center will focus on several developing fields, including mobile computing, networking, verification, fraud protection, encryption and large-scale distributed processing. Its first task will be to create an exabyte-scale storage cloud of past University research. UT computer sciences professors Bruce Porter and Keshav Pingali and two SunGard executives make up the executive committee and serve as active participants for the research center. With combined efforts, the research center will provide real-world research and further the growth of computer science.

Worm testing may lead to cure for Parkinson’s disease Researchers on campus may have a breakthrough for a cure for Parkinson’s disease after testing dopamine-deficient worms to imitate the effect that the disease has on humans. The National Institute of Health recently granted Adela Ben-Yakar and Jon PierceShimomura a research grant to develop technology that reduces the time and cost restraints that often prevent researchers from testing neurodegenerative drugs. The national funding can increase the number

UT-Tyler professor advises on free-fall lifeboats TYLER, Texas — Somewhere above the 30,000 feet is where James Nelson does a lot of his professional work. Flying is not in his job description, but his many professional responsibilities require frequent air travel. And he has found in several decades of international travel that plane rides provide some of the best uninterrupted work time. “That’s where I do a lot of the thinking work and the planning work is literally sitting on the airplanes because it’s just peaceful and quiet,” he said. In more than 35 years of work, Nelson, 59, has amassed quite

of drugs being tested each year from 1,000 to nearly one million, according to Science Daily. Nearly half a million Americans suffer from Parkinson’s, a disorder that attacks the central nervous system. Parkinson’s patients often suffer from slow movement ability, a symptom that is being studied using dopamine. Pierce-Shimomura is one of the lead researchers fighting to find a cure for Parkinson’s. His worm research examines how both a healthy worm and a dopaminedeficient worm swim in water. The diseasefree worm moved quickly through the water, while the worm with “Parkinson’s” had little movement.

Water on Europa may mean alien life forms exist on Jupiter Using Galileo spacecraft images, UT postdoctoral fellow Britney Schmidt and Don Blankenship of the Institute for Geophysics have discovered a body of water on Jupiter’s moon Europa. The mass is approximately the size of North America’s Great Lakes and is covered by a sheet of ice. Transfer between the icy surface and the water below could indicate the ocean is habitable, according to the team’s research. The confirmation of alien life on Europa will only come with a spacecraft mission, but the team’s research is being praised by NASA for resolving many conflicting observations.

a resume. He has climbed the ranks of academia, moving from the position of lecturer to college dean, while at the same time maintaining a tie with industry that has kept him involved with the maritime world. “I probably could do consulting if I chose to,” Nelson said. “I consciously (have) chosen not to even though it would help me financially to do it. I’m a member of the university community. We’re supposed to be conducting research, bringing in external funding.” As dean of The University of Texas at Tyler’s College of Engineering and Computer Sciences, Nelson oversees the work of four academic departments: civil, electrical and mechanical engineering plus computer science. However, this is only one of his professional roles. As part of his university work, he also is a contracted consultant to companies designing free-fall lifeboats, lifesaving devices that are used

on merchant ships, primarily those carrying cargo, around the world. Through this work, he has traveled to numerous countries — including Australia, China, Norway and Russia — and work with some of the best minds. He also serves as a technical adviser for the United States delegation to the Ship Equipment and Design Subcommittee of the International Maritime Organization in London. In this role, he works specifically with matters related to freefall lifeboats. And he also serves as a technical adviser to the U.S. Coast Guard. “Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would see as much of the world as I have, work with so many different people, and form so many friendships all over the world,” Nelson wrote in an email. — Emily Guevara, Tyler Morning Telegraph /Associated Press

office hours, are prohibited on designated no-class days and during the final examination period. These dates are set aside for students to prepare for and take scheduled final examinations. During this period, papers and projects are not to be due, review sessions are not to be scheduled, quizzes are not to be given, and there are not to be any other class-related activities, with the exception of office hours (Policy Memorandum 3.201). For the fall semester 2011, the no-class days are Monday, December 5; Tuesday, December 6; and Sunday, December 11. The final examination period is Wednesday, December 7, through Saturday, December 10; and Monday, December 12, through Tuesday, December 13. Times of Final Examinations. No final examinations may be given before the examination period begins, and no change in time from that printed in the official schedule is permitted. An instructor with a compelling reason to change the time of an examination must obtain the approval of the department chair and dean of the college or school in which the course is taught before announcing an alternative examination procedure to the students. No substantial examinations may be given during the last week of class or during the no-class days preceding the final examination period. An examination counting for more than thirty percent of the final course grade is considered to be substantial. For good cause, an instructor may give a student permission to take an examination with a different class section than the one in which the student is registered. For good cause, a student may petition his or her academic dean for permission to change the time or place of an examination from that specified in the official schedule. If permission is given by the dean and the instructor, no penalty (such as a reduction in grade) may be assessed. There is no University policy that provides relief to students who have three examinations scheduled the same day; in that situation, students may seek the assistance of the course instructor(s), department chair, and/or dean of the college. For additional final examination policies, see the Course Schedule or General Information, chapter 4.

GRADE REPORTING The final examination date and time for a class is determined by the class meeting time as listed in the above index. Final examinations for classes that meet at times not listed in the above index are normally scheduled with classes meeting at the indexed time that most closely corresponds to the beginning day and time of the class. For example, the exam for a class that meets TH 3:00-6:00 PM will be at the same time as exams for classes that meet TTH 3:30-5:00 PM. If the beginning time of the class is halfway between two standard class beginning times, the class will be grouped with those meeting at the later time. For example, the exam for a class that meets MW 2:304:00 PM will be at the same time as exams for classes that meet MWF 3:00-4:00 PM. Uniform examinations and their correspondent makeup exams are scheduled for certain courses that administer examinations at the same time for all students enrolled in the course. Generally, these examinations are given at times other than the regular examination time. A list of uniform and makeup examinations is printed at the end of this final examination schedule. Questions about the final examination schedule should be directed to the Office of the Registrar at 475-7600.

Submission of Grade Sheets to Registrar. Faculty are required to submit grades according to the following schedule and policies: For classes having a final examination on: Wednesday, December 7 Thursday, December 8 Friday, December 9 Saturday, December 10 Monday, December 12 Tuesday, December 13

Grades are due by 10:00 am on: Monday, December 12 Tuesday, December 13 Wednesday, December 14 Thursday, December 15 Friday, December 16 Friday, December 16

- Final grades for classes that have regularly scheduled meeting times but no final examinations are due at the same time they would have been if examinations had been scheduled. - Final grades for classes with no officially scheduled meeting times are due by 10:00 am on Wednesday, December 7.
