Brian George Cadd born in Perth, Australia on November 29, 1946is an iconic Australian singer-songwriter, keyboardist and producer who has performed as a member of The Groop, Axiom, Flying Burrito Brothers and as a solo performer. Brian has composed hits for John Farnham and Joe Cocker, been in bands with icons like Little River Band's Glenn Shorrock, and he produced the first ever Chinese country album. The beginning of his career was at the age of twelve when he entered a TV talent quest, from which he was offered the job as pianist in a junior band on a local children's TV show. After that, Brian worked in his cousin's club band, and in a pop group formed with school friends. The Cadd family moved to Tasmania in the early 1960’s and eventually they settled in Melbourne, just as Beatlemania swept the country. . Brian's earliest musical ventures in Melbourne was at the Beale Street Jazz Band and The Castaways. In 1965, The Castaways changed into the R&B band called The Jackson Kings consisting of Brian, Carl Bennett (vocals), Chas Brown (guitar), Ray Neville (bass) and Bill Turgeon (drums). Singer Ronnie Charles joined towards the end of the band's life. The Jackson Kings recorded two singles for CBS, Watch Your Step/Come On Now (February 1966) and Watermelon Man/Lawdy Miss Clawdy (April 1966).From The Jackson Kings, Brian progressed on to two of the most celebrated bands of their day, The Groop and Axiom. In 1966, Brian formed The Groop where Brian met Ian "Molly" Meldrum and suggested Brian Cadd should change his name to Caine. "I think my Mum wanted to write me out of her will when I told her that! There are still records out there with Brian Caine on them," he recalls. The Groop won the 1967 Hoadley's Battle of the Bands competition and played on the Russell Morris hit The Real Thing. After The Groops’demise came another great Australian band - Axiom, Led by former Twilights singer Glenn Shorrock, Valentines drummer Doug Lavery (later replaced by Don Lebler) and Cam-Pact singer-guitarist Chris Stockley. Axiom was considered by many as one of the original super groups in Australia, with many popular hits such as Little Ray of Sunshine and My Baby's Gone. Don Lebler and Brian co-wrote all their original material, including the hit singles Arkansas Grass, A Little Ray of Sunshine and My Baby's Gone, and the band recorded two very fine LPs, Fool’s Gold (Fable, 1969) and If Only (Warner-Reprise, 1971), the latter recorded in Los Angeles and produced by Shel Talmy. Brian has produced many Australian acts including, Robin Jolley, Ronnie Burns, Broderick Smith and Arena. In September of 1972 Brian established his own record label called Bootleg Records. He also composed or performed music for films, Alvin Purple, Alvin Purple Rides Again, Fatal Vision, The Return of the Living Dead, Vampires on Bikini Beach, Morning of the Earth and The Heartbreak Kid and for television Class of 74, The Midnight Special and Don Kirshner's Rock Concert. His songwriting for other acts includes The Masters Apprentices, Bootleg Family Band, Ronnie Burns, The Pointer Sisters and Little River Band.

In the 1980s, Brian Cadd headed to the US and wrote songs In the 1980s, Brian Cadd headed to the US and wrote songs for Joe Cocker, Ringo Starr, Little River Band, Paul Jones, Cilla Black, The Pointer Sisters, Bonnie Tyler, Glenn Campbell, Charlie Daniels and John Farnham. Cadd's iconic status was acknowledged when he was inducted into the 2007 Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame, in 2009 The Australian Songwriters Hall of Fame and an Honorary Masters of Music from The Australian Institute of Music in Sydney
Brian remarked on his achievements: “I’ve been doing all this music stuff for more than 40 years. And in those years I have had so many wonderful things happen to me. I’ve lived about 3 lifetimes so far. So you can look back at incidents and events along the way and enjoy (or regret) what’s happened. But it’s hard to look at things as a ‘whole life’. And you can’t really measure what you’ve achieved against anyone else (or really try to). You just keep on keeping on...as they say. When you receive these kinds of awards though, they are very different from, say, a gold record or a ‘song of the year’ award. These are about the sum total of what you’ve done. In that sense they do measure you against your peers. They show you how you fit into the ‘bigger picture’. And it feels wonderful to be included amongst all these other folk, most of whom you really admire and many of whom are good friends. Very special and, of course, awards that can only happen once in your career” A couple of Brian’s memorable songs include A Little Ray of Sunshine and Ginger Man, so I asked Brian why and just how these 2 songs were written. “ A Little Ray of Sunshine was written after a fabulous little baby girl was born into the circle of people in and around The Groop. The couple were breaking up acrimoniously and I thought that the arrival of the child was cause for celebration despite what was happening to the parents. I had no idea that the song would travel onwards from generation to generation. Ginger Man is a song based on my love for old western films, like HIGH NOON and such. The character was called Ginger Man because he was, in my head, the same character as the lead character in the book THE GINGER MAN by J.P. Donlevy...a book that I re-read about every 10 years, I love it so much. The irony is that, although virtually noone ever figured out what the song was really about, it became a hit and, of course I still play it today. I guess there a lots of those kinds of songs. I defy anyone to tell me what BLINDED BY THE LIGHT is really about” Totally agree Brian! I really respect Brian’s dexterity – He truly never stops! Brian is currently working on a musical with his best friend Rick Fenn from 10cc. “It’s very exciting and we are having heaps of fun. It’s quite different from anything I’ve done so far. An enormous canvas...where you build a storyline, people it with characters...and then make them sing stuff. So much fun. I also have a second book in the works...quite different from the first. And I’m recording two new albums simultaneously. A very hectic time.” There are also several tours planned. I will be doing some dates with Russell Morris, as usual...so much fun. Then some dates with Glenn Shorrock, revisiting the Axiom days. Some solo gigs myself...and a most surprising series of concerts that I can’t tell you about just yet. “ On a personal level, Brian’s life is very rich. IHe enjoys each and every day...and
they are all crammed with things to do and experience. If anything the pace is quickening.
“When you’re young you just assume you’ve got all the time in the world to do all you want to...but as you grow older, you realise that your life is finite and, if you want to get it all done, you’d better get a move on!”…….BRIAN CADD
Brian has now written his own Autobiography “FROM THIS SIDE OF THINGS” which he discloses life creating music around Australia, in London, Los Angeles, Nashville and more.
his incredible
This book such a fascinating read! From performing to writing and recording with The Groop, Axiom, The Bootleg Family and solo, his work in the publishing and production side of the music industry it is a witty, entertaining and intelligent insight and is must read for any Australian Music Fan. I asked Brian how the book came into his head “I sat next to a publisher on a plane one day...we got talking and by the time I landed, I was really thinking about it. She kept emailing me...and eventually a deal was done and then I HAD to start. I wrote a chapter...and realised that I couldn’t remember ANYTHING! So I went out with a little recorder and talked to all my friends who were involved with me over the years. They told me lots of interesting stuff about how, why and where things had happened to me. And the surprising result was...they unknowingly jogged my own memory. Stuff came flowing back. Then I was ready to begin! I had touring and other commitments so it wasn’t a continuous process. But I would get 4 or 5 days free every so often. Mostly I went down to our farm and locked myself away in a little mudbrick studio on the property and ploughed on. The farm had once been owned by children’s author John Marsden and he wrote many of his books in that little studio...so the creative vibes were all over the place. Once I got started I would go for 6 hours at a time. So, the writing took place fairly quickly over about 6 months. The hard part was the self-editing. When my book editor Mary Trewby came aboard she was pretty tough on me (in a nice way). With her, I learned to take a lot of the ‘fluff’ out that I had thrown in during those long 6 hour stretches. An interesting process really. Songwriters actually do that automatically...as we usually have to tell a whole story in a dozen lines. We learn economy of words...which I hopefully, with Mary’s help, applied to the book. ´ Brians book ís honest and contains some of his favourite memories including his early days in the industry, “I think, in terms of the most fun to write, my early days in the industry during the last half of the 60s probably. They were very exciting times; we were all inventing what is now our Industry...but then was just a whole lot of not really very experienced people learning to play, sing, write, or become engineers in very rudimentary studios...and then turn what we’d done over to a bunch of video makers who were also only learning. Even the business side of things was in its infancy. So it was all uncharted territory and it was extremely exciting. There has not been a period since when everything was so free and creative...and there certainly won’t ever be again in the future´ You can purchase ‘FROM THIS SIDE OF THINGS” from the bigger bookstores or just go onto Brian’s website www.briancadd.com where it is available (and can be signed), along with lots of other goodies.

GIVE PEACE A CHANCE
THE INVENTION OF THE
PEACE SIGN
The world-famous peace symbol, which turns 55 on April 4 2013, was the brainchild of British designer Gerald Holtom , seeking a simple but powerful emblem for an anti-nuclear-weapons march in London. The symbol of flags for the letters "N" and "D" standing for Nuclear Disarmament ("N" is two flags held down at a 45 degree angle, and "D" is one flag up and one flag down). The symbol was introduced at the Aldermaston March (picture below), the first action of the newly formed Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND). The "Disarmament Symbol" made its public debut on April 4, 1958, in front of 5,000 people gathered in London to show support for the Ban the Bomb movement Gerald Holtom was a professional artist and graduate of the Royal College of Arts in London. He was one of many intellectuals in Britain during the 1950's who were deeply disturbed by witnessing the horrors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and then watching in disbelief as their own government, despite being in a time of post-war material hardship, raced to join the nuclear club. The peace symbol was first drawn on home-made banners and ceramic badges. Although the symbol was originally designed only as a sign for nuclear disarmament, it quickly spread around the world and within ten years had become the international symbol of peace. It has deliberately never been copyrighted. Throughout the years it has taken on many different meanings, including freedom and unity. Millions of people around the world, regardless of race or religious beliefs, have looked to the peace sign to unite them. It has become an enduring cultural icon. It is probably the most commonly used non-religious symbol of hope in the world, instantly recognized anywhere as the universal sign for peace. Quite an accomplishment for an image which, instead of being based on some famous existing object, was created from scratch to represent a common idea. Unfortunately, after 50 years we live in a world no closer to nuclear disarmament than it was in 1958. In fact, it seems we are farther away than ever before. Although the world is currently filled with wars, the peace symbol is a reminder of how much people long for peace “We must see that peace represents a sweeter music, a cosmic melody that is far superior to the discords of war”. ………………..Martin Luther King Junior
IT’S SIX O’CLOCK ROCK –a journey through time “Well come on everybody it's six o'clock, Huh-huh, uh-huh-huh Come on everybody it's time to rock, Uh-huh-huh, uh-huh-huh Well let's stop and let's rock Come on everybody it's six o'clock Well everybody knows just-a what to do, Huh-huh, uh-huh-huh Just tune yourself to channel two, Uh-huh-huh, uh-huh-huh And let's stop and then rock Come on everybody it's six o'clock” Johnny O'Keefe himself wrote the theme song for Six O’clock Rock, the Saturday evening teenage music show he took over on the government network, ABC-TV in 1959 and was broadcast at 6PM on Saturday evenings. Inspired by the BBC program 6.5 Special, it had a similar format to its rival on the TCN9 network, Bandstand compered by Brian Henderson. This was ABC-TV's very first youth oriented music program, long before the start of Countdown. The show initially opened with American girl Ricki Merriman as compère and Johnny O'Keefe and his band the The Dee Jays as guests. After six shows O'Keefe had taken over the hosting role. The show usually opened with O'Keefe singing "Weeeeeell, come on everybody its 6 o'clock huh huh huh". The first episode also featured Reg Lindsay, The Australian All-Stars, The Graduates, Terry King and Johnny Ball. The dancers in the opening title sequence were Lee Nielson and Milton Mitchell. It started in February 1959 and first hired J.O'K as a singer with his band The DeeJays. They were to present the minority 'New Music' part of the show, with Modern Jazz and contemporary hits of the early 50's making up the 'most important' part of the show. The show originally contained a mixture of Rock and Roll and Jazz, but O'Keefe wanted the show to be all Rock and Roll, so the Jazz content dwindled for a time. It wasn't long before two things happened. The first was that the new audience spread across Australia turned out to be the teenagers who demanded more of this new music stuff...The second was when producer Peter Page made Johnny the compere instead of just an act. As he (Johnny )had never been a radio or TV compere before, his first few weeks as compere could be described as 'disastrous. He would forget stars names and songs when announcing them and would generally just fumble through. However this is exactly what the teenagers wanted as it quickly became the most popular TV show.
7
Future stars such as Lonnie Lee, Barry Stanton, Warren Williams and hundreds of others were to get their first 'Australia-wide' exposure through this show. It eventually lost some appeal after Johnny was replaced and it became more 'softer' and like Bandstand which was its opposition in TCN9. O'Keefe left the show in 1961 to move to ATN-7 to compère the more elaborately produced Johnny O'Keefe Show. 6 O’clock Rock closed in 1962 after having moved to a 'softer' format with O'Keefe's departure, suffering from greater competition from O'Keefe's new show on 7 and Bandstand on 9. In 1962 the plug was finally pulled and the screen went black. It went into history as the first ever true raw Rock'n'Roll TV Show in Australia.

THE SEEKERS 50 YEARS ON ……………. Australian 1960s folksters, The Seekers, have announced an Australian tour to celebrate 50 years. The Tour will include Brisbane, Canberra, Newcastle, Wollongong, Adelaide, Perth, Sydney and Melbourne, Australians of the Year 1967 and ARIA Hall of Fame inductees, The Seekers first performed together in Melbourne in 1962. They became Australia’s first international supergroup, topping charts around the world with hits such as “George Girl, (nominated for an Academy Award) The Carnival is Over, I’ll Never Find Another You, and Morningtown Ride. Judith met Athol on the first day she started work as a secretary at the J. Walter Thompson advertising agency, where Athol was working as an account executive. Athol knew of Judith as a jazz singer, and invited her to sit in with Athol and his mates Keith Potger and Bruce Woodley, who performed together as The Seekers. The venue was the Treble Clef, in Toorak Road, South Yarra. The date was Monday, December 3, 1962 and then Australian history was made! In 1964 they set sail on a cruise liner literally singing for their supper, planning a 10-week turnaround based in the UK, and sent their album and photographs ahead. On arrival in London, agent Eddie Jarrett booked them on national TV shows, and in variety theatre and clubs all over the UK. The UK ‘beat’ scene had been turned on its ear by these clean-cut Aussies. The Seekers were named 'Best New Group' at the 'Top Of The Pops Awards'. They toured internationally, with more chart-topping hits over the next three years: 'A World Of Our Own'; 'Someday One Day' written for them by Paul Simon; Malvina Reynolds' lullaby 'Morningtown Ride'; ‘Walk With Me’; 'When Will The Good Apples Fall?'; and 'The Carnival Is Over' which knocked The Rolling Stones' 'Get Off Of My Cloud' from No.1, by selling 90,000 copies a day! [Note: In 2003 “The Carnival Is Over” was ranked No.30 in the UK Top 100 Best-Selling Singles Of All Time! In late 1966 they sang in the 'Royal Command Performance' at the 'London Palladium', then represented their country at 'Expo '67' in Montreal in the first-ever satellite television broadcast to Australia, and were honoured jointly as 'Australians Of The Year 1967'.
The Seekers’ final London shows in 1968 resulted in a live-in-concert emotional BBC TV spectacular ‘Farewell The Seekers’ watched by a tearful audience of more than 10 million people. The Seekers had gone, but the inevitable “best of" album charted for a staggering 125 weeks. Bill Wyman wrote that for the first time ever, The Rolling Stones could not debut at No.1 with their new album, because The Seekers ‘Best Of’ was outselling ‘Goat’s Head Soup’! In 2010, The Seekers were surprised and delighted to be invited by Andre Rieu to join his tour and, putting their individual projects on hold for the extravaganza, they reunited to tour Australia and New Zealand as special guests of Andre and his Johann Strauss Orchestra. In 2012, The Seekers went back into the recording studio to record two new tracks – “Silver Threads And Golden Needles” and “In My Life” – to take pride of place on their newest compilation, ‘The Golden Jubilee Album – 50 Tracks For Fifty Years’… And now … the world can truly celebrate with The Seekers’ milestone as December 3 2012 marks 50 years since the four original members - Judith Durham, Athol Guy, Keith Potger and Bruce Woodley - first met and performed together in a little coffee shop called ‘Treble Clef’ in Melbourne… I am really excited that they will be performing together again in celebration of their 50 years, even though I am a rock fan, I have fond memories of The Seekers as a youngster, singing along to Morningtown Ride, Georgie Girl and of course the beautiful strains of The Carnival Is Over. Tickets can be purchased through www.ticketmaster.com.au or other ticket outlets
The Seekers still hold the record for the biggest concert crowd in the southern hemisphere (200,000) in March 1967. 11

RUSSEL MORRIS HAS A NEW ALBUM. Russell Norman Morris (born 31 July 1948) is an Australian singer-songwriter who had five Australian Top 10 singles during the late 1960s and early 1970s. On 1 July 2008, the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) recognised Morris' iconic status when he was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame. Ian Meldrum convinced Morris to leave Russell’s original “ Somebody's Image “ for a solo career. Meldrum, as producer, spent considerable hours and money to create a extravaganza around a song called "The Real Thing".
band Morris's manager and seven-minute production
It was released to shocked radio programmers, who had such a long Australian single before, it was up to Morris' performing talents to make the record work. It reached in June 1969. Without any promotional support from Morris, number one in Chicago, Houston and New York.
never been asked to play personality, singing and Australia's Number 1 spot "The Real Thing" reached
"The Real Thing" is now considered one of the very best psychedelic rock singles produced in the 1960s. At around six minutes and thirty seconds, it was also the longest pop single recorded in Australia at that time. My recollections of Russell as a young female teenager was sitting about 2 feet from the television watching him sing “The Real Thing” and was in love kissing his face through the TV. Today, well I wouldn’t kiss the TV but I am still” in love “with The Real Thing Russell Morris. Sharkmouth “ I’ve always wanted to do an album based on those elusive Australian characters, stories and legends. My grandmother lived to the ripe old age of 93, and during her lifetime she would always regale me with stories about her youth, and what things were like ‘back then’. “

GREASE is still the word, Australian theatre producer John Frost HAS revealed the cast and tour dates for his new multi-million dollar production of GREASE. In the lead roles of Danny and Sandy are musical theatre favourite Rob Mills and rising star Gretel Scarlett. Rob Mills made a name for himself in musical theatre performing Fiyero in the Broadway blockbuster Wicked in Melbourne and Sydney for two years, and will join GREASE after starring as Warner Huntington III in the hit musical Legally Blonde in Brisbane and Melbourne. Gretel Scarlett has played support roles in Wicked and Mamma Mia! and is excited to take on her first starring role. Bert Newton returns to his radio roots to play the role of slick veteran disc jockey Vince Fontaine, while Todd Mckenney dusts off his dancing shoes to star as Teen Angel, the goodlooking, falsetto-voiced, Fabian lookalike. The role of All-American, rock-star student at Rydell High, Johnny Casino, has gone to Anthony Callea, returning to the musical theatre stage after success in Rent and Wicked. Rizzo, the leader of the Pink Ladies, will be played by Lucy Maunder (Dr Zhivago, The Threepenny Opera), and Kenickie will be played by Stephen Mahy (Jersey Boys, I Will Survive). The cast also includes Francine Cain (Frenchy), Chris Durling (Doody), Sam Ludeman (Sonny), Duane McGregor (Roger) and Laura Murphy (Jan). “GREASE is one of my favourite musicals, and with this top draw cast of musical theatre stars I have no doubt it will again be everyone’s favourite party musical,” John Frost said. “I’m thrilled that Rob Mills will be our Danny, straight from his success in Legally Blonde, and that we have found a new leading lady in Gretel Scarlett. HAIR THE MUSICAL
Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical Was a rock musical with a book and lyrics by James Rado and Gerome Ragni with music by Galt MacDermot. A product of the hippie counter-culture and sexual revolution of the 1960s, several of its songs became anthems of the anti-Vietnam War peace movement. The original Australian production premiered in Sydney on June 6, 1969. It was produced by Harry M. Miller and directed by Jim Sharman, who also designed the production. HAIR was a theatrical breakthrough in many ways. It was the first show with a truly integrated cast. Everyone connected to it, felt it.
Excerpt from "Hair" I let it fly in the breeze and get caught in the trees,Give a home to the fleas in my hair. A home for fleas, a hive for beesA nest for birds, there ain't no words For the beauty, the splendor, the wonder of my Hair.... Flow it, show it, long as God can grow it, my hair....Oh say, can you see my eyes? If you can Then my hair's too short....They'll be ga ga at the Go Go when they see me in my toga, My toga made of blond, brilliantined, biblical hair.My hair like Jesus wore it Hallellujah I adore it……
The Australian production of Hair opened in Sydney on 4 June 1969 at the Metro Theatre, Kings Cross., and ran for 2 years. It was unanimously well-reviewed, and despite a minor hitch at the premiere (the auditorium had to be evacuated because of a bomb scare) the star-studded premiere was a major social event, attended by a host of local celebrities. The tribe included Keith Glass and then Reg Livermore as Berger, John Waters as Claude and Sharon Redd as The Magician. Redd was one of six African-Americans brought to Australia to provide a racially integrated tribe.[46][47] The production broke local box-office records and ran for two years, but because of some of the language in the show, the cast album was banned in Queensland and New Zealand. It transferred to Melbourne in 1971 and then had a national tour. The production also marked the stage debut of Boston-born Australian vocalist Marcia Hines. The brief nude scene at the end of Act I was a subject of controversy and notoriety. Miller writes that "nudity was a big part of the hippie culture, both as a rejection of the sexual repression of their parents and also as a statement about naturalism, spirituality, honesty, openness, and freedom. The naked body was beautiful, something to be celebrated and appreciated, not scorned and hidden. They saw their bodies and their sexuality as gifts, not as 'dirty' things” For the performers, the nude scene was initially a challenge -- nothing like it had been staged in Australia before -but they soon learned to take it in their stride: 19
John Waters: " ... we came to the time to rehearse [the nude scene] and I think Jim Sharman said, 'Well, you know, we're going to get our clothes off eventually. We might as well start now.' He took off his clothes and after a while it became a bit of a laugh and nobody bothered about it so much."
Reg Livermore: “... the nude scene is nothing to write home about ... it closes the first half and is backlit, so you'd have to have the eyesight of Superman to claim with some certainty you'd seen anything. The production ran in Sydney until 1971, and despite early fears that it might be censored or closed down; it was a huge popular success and earned its investors a return of more than 600% on their original stake. During 1971 the production moved to Melbourne, when it was completely redesigned by Brian Thomson. After the Melbourne season it toured other cities until 1973.

Bluesfest Byron Bay – the Festival that will be presenting its best line up ever over the upcoming Easter Long Weekend (28 March – 1 April Peter Noble, Festival Director says: I can’t wait to see Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite on stage together on Day 1 of Bluesfest Thursday 28th of March. This is a show you simply cannot miss. There are so many performances this year, that are going to move you deeply and this will be one of many. I was there the year Harper begged an introduction to his idol at Bluesfest 1996. Despite the difference in age and background, the two hit it off immediately. On Good Friday, Day 2 – Ben Harper will perform solo. Manu Chao will be gracing us with a 2nd show on Easter Sunday. When we announced Manu Chao for Good Friday the response was massive, his following in Australia is so big, so it will be welcomed news to many Festival goers.
The ZAC BROWN BAND’s addition to the Easter Monday will spice things up even more. They are one entertaining, impressive and downright outstanding band with an amazing energy. Plus we are welcoming back some very treasured artists of the Music Maker Foundation. The foundation is something very close to my heart, as it also supports the older musicians as well as musicians in need. There are simply so many good things that come out of this Foundation. This year the Music Maker Blues Revue features artists Ironing Board Sam, Major Handy, Pat Wilder & Dr Burt. It’s a Blues Blend at its best! I saw Nicky Bomba’s BUSTAMENTO at the recent Woodford Folk Festival and I tell you what: Nicky had the audience jumping up and down, and doing all sorts of movements – everyone just loved it. So, if you are up for some more dancing and shaking it, then be there for Nicky’s show on Sunday early evening. You can’t sit down for this one. Of course we had to add more of our own Aussie Talent to the bill as well including last year’s Busking competition winner Brotherfox. Way to go. The Grammys: There are a total of 17 Grammy Winners performing at this year’s Festival sharing a whopping 67 Grammy’s between them so it’s a new record. With the upcoming Grammy Awards on Feb 10, more could be added. Bluesfest 2103 Artists like Bonnie Raitt, The Lumineers, Zac Brown and Jimmy Cliff are all up for Grammy’s, so the list may grow! A special mention has to go to RODRIGUEZ’s documentary ‘Searching for Sugarman’ which has been nominated for an OSCAR in the category of Best Documentary. What a massive honor & recognition and I wish him all the best for the upcoming Academy Awards. The Pollstar Awards ceremony in LA is just around the corner. I am so thrilled that Bluesfest is nominated for ‘Best International Music Festival’ and we are up against the world’s Best Festivals. It really is the music industries major awards. And for some final news, ‘The Rhythms Magazine’ Readers Poll has also awarded Bluesfest “Best Australian Festival” for the 18th time. We now have a 15 year straight record; the only year we missed out was in 1997. Thank you everyone who voted for us.

JOHN PAUL JONES
JOHN BONHAM
ROBERT PLANT
THE BAND ………………. John Bonham (Bonzo) was born on 31st May 1948 His mother was in labour 26 hours, after which, his heart stopped beating. The doctor had left the ward, so the nurse on duty called for another doctor who managed to revive him. The nurse later said it was “a miracle” that he had survived. At age 5. He used any household objects laying around to bang on. He used a circular coffee tin which he would beat with knives and forks as a substitute for drumsticks, resulting in a snare drum like sound. At the age of ten, his mother bought a snare drum.. John received his first full drum kit from them aged 15. John later recalled: "It was almost prehistoric... Most of it was rust." In the morning of September 25th 1980 Bonham had died tragically from inhalation of vomit in bed during his sleep, aged just 32.
Robert Anthony Plant (Percy) was born on 20 the August 1948. At age 10 he hid behind the curtains that adorned his parent’s French windows, and pretended to be Elivs.. He left home at 16 and had various jobs while pursuing his music career, one of which was working for the major British construction company Wimpey in Birmingham in 1967 laying tarmac on roads. He also worked at Woolworths in Halesowen town for a short period of time. He married Maureen Wilson on 9 November 1968. The couple had three children: daughter Carmen Jane (1968) (married to Charlie Jones, Plant's bass player for solo tours); and sons Karac Pendragon (1972–1977), and Logan Romero (1979). The couple divorced in August 1983. Also, Plant has a younger son, Jesse Lee (1991), with Shirley Wilson, sister of Maureen. According to Sunday Times Rich List, Plant is worth £85 million as of 2012 John Paul Jones (born John Baldwin)
(Jonesy or Heinekan")
was born on 3rd January 1946. learning from his father, Joe who was a pianist and arranger for big bands in the 1940s and 1950s. His mother was also in the music business and the family performed together touring around England as a vaudeville comedy act. John attend boarding school due to his parents touring and studied music. At the age of 14, Jones became choirmaster/organist at a local church and during that year, he also bought his first bass guitar, a Dallas Tuxedo solid body electric followed by multiple basses until he bought his 1962 Fender Jazz Bass which he used until 1976. Jones joined his first band, The Deltas, at 15. He played bass for jazz-rock London group, Jett Blacks, that included guitarist John McLaughlin. His big break came in 1962 when he was hired by Jet Harris and Tony Meehan of the successful British group The Shadows for a two-year stint. John met his wife Maureen, in 1965, and they have been together ever since. They have 3 daughters: Jacinda, Tamara and Kierra. According to The Sunday Times Rich List Jones' assets are worth £40 million as of 2009.
James Patrick Page (Jimmy) Was born on 9th January 1944. Jimmy came across his first guitar aged 12, in the house his parents lived in at Epsom, Surrey. "I don't know whether the guitar was left behind by the people in the house before us, or whether it was a friend of the family's—nobody seemed to know why it was there”. Jimmy had a few lesson but is mainly self-taught. He was bored so he taught himself the guitar from listening to records. It was a very personal thing. Keith Moon Drummer from The Who suggested the name "Lead Zeppelin" for the first time, after Mark Entwistle commented that the proceedings would take to the air like a lead balloon According to Sunday Times Rich List, Page's assets are worth £75 million as of 2012.
REVIEW OF CONCERT IN MELBOURNE BY SALLY URISCH (Courtesy of webmaster ledzeppelin.com)
Sunday of the Melbourne Zeppelin concert everyone was thinking that perhaps outdoor concerts were not that good, mainly because there was a possibility of a repeat performance of the three inches of rain in ½ an hour. By 2 o'clock, over half the stadium was full and there was a steady stream of cars and people arriving. By 3 o'clock the place was packed, and the crowd was wondering what was going to happen, because no one was announcing anything - where the hell was Zeppelin? Five minutes past three and on they walked; it took the crowd a second or two to realize they were coming on to play unannounced. "Good afternoon" said Plant, and the crowd roared back "I can't hear you", so 'the reply came louder, and then Jimmy Page started into the first number. They started off with recent album numbers like Black Dog, trying to get instant build-up. Unfortunately, the acoustics of the stadium were against them and the wind blowing over the stage threw a lot of the sound out into the street to the crowd ("Why don't you come in?' — Plant) Towards the end of their acoustic set, Zeppelin had the sound licked, and from then there was nothing but buildup. Page's guitar work became faultless as he strutted and walked around the stage and for some reason, reminded me of Chuck Berry, when he used to goose walk across stage, with his guitar slung low. Jimmy Page also changed guitars regularly for almost every number from electric to acoustic and for one number a double necked job with one neck six string, and one neck twelve string. John Bonham and John Paul Jones must also rate mentions as far as the music goes, because they were an integral part of the sound. Page and Plant however, dominate the visual thing, so it's these two you remember when you leave. I must mention the groups acoustic set, which is unlike the Zeppelin I expected to hear and therefore came as a pleasant surprise. By the time the acoustic set was finished, the place was packed with at least 13,000 to 14,000 fans with all the aisles packed with people who couldn't get a seat. Until the sound problem was overcome, the crowd was inattentive, and along with the acoustics echo there was a general murmur from people talking In fact, Plant told the crowd twice to shut up. By halfway through the two hours the group played, the audience was hooked, and by the end of the concert when you looked around all you saw was a moving sea of bodies jumping up and down against the sky. Plant kept up a continual banter between numbers, commenting on everything from the weather to what individual people were doing in the audience (yeah, you). The group stopped playing for about ten minutes towards the end of the concert when it started to rain lightly, but they came back on promising to go off again at the first shock (or up in smoke more like it). The last two numbers after this break were probably the best of the day, with the wind coming up adding another aspect to Zeppelin's driving music and to Plant's antics in his skin-tight jeans.
A GREAT CONCERT THAT ENDED WITH THE AUDIENCE GOING WILD

SET LIST Immigrant Song, Heartbreaker, Black Dog, Since I've Been Loving You, Stairway to Heaven, Going to California, That's the Way, Tangerine, Bron-Y-Aur Stomp, Dazed and Confused, Rock and Roll, Whole Lotta Love (medley incl. Let That Boy Boogie, Let's Have a Party).
“great show! Robert's voice is unreal ... the scream he lets loose in Since I've Been Loving You is blood curdling, and the band's jams on Dazed And Confused and Whole Lotta Love are unreal! The acoustic set is wonderful, and the show is cut short by a rainstorm that develops suddenly over this outdoor venue. "Well, it's started to rain, I think it's time we gotta go. If we don't go now, we're gonna die, I don't wanna know! sung Plant at the end of Dazed And Confused ... still, the great recording makes this one excellent.
Led Zeppelin's 1972 Australasian Tour was the only concert tour of Australia and New Zealand by the English rock band. The tour commenced on 16 February and concluded on 29 February 1972. (Led Zeppelin's guitarist Jimmy Page had earlier toured Australia with The Yardbirds in January 1967). The original plan for this tour was for the group to stop off en route at Singapore for a concert on 14 February, but the local authorities refused their entry due to local laws banning males from wearing long hair. Led Zeppelin received generally good press coverage for this tour and black and white footage of some of their concert at Sydney on 27 February, along with a press party, were filmed by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and shown to a national audience. Some of this footage was later made available on the Led Zeppelin DVD, released in 2003. Part way through this tour Page shaved off his trademark beard, a look he adopted nearly two years before while recording Led Zeppelin III. He had the beard at Led Zeppelin's concert in Melbourne 20 February, but is clean shaven at the band's press party two days later. Page would remain clean shaven for the rest of the band's career. All of the concerts on this tour except for one (at Brisbane on 29 February) were performed at open-air venues. The Melbourne performance at Kooyong Stadium on 20 February was cut short due to inclement weather All concerts from this tour are available on unofficial CDs except for the Perth concert and show the band in fine form.
Robert Plant touring Australia in March and April 2013.
A Robert Plant Tour of Australia has been long awaited by his Australian fans. He last toured in 1996 with Jimmy Page. Plant was voted in the Rolling Stone Readers Pick in 2011, 'The Best Lead Singer of All Time'. Even greater is the news the he has been performing 8 Led Zeppelin songs on stage on his current South American Tour. Now the wait is finally over - Robert Plant is coming ………. Following the announcement of his appearances on Byron Bay’s Bluesfest and the West Coast Blues & Roots Festival in Fremantle, Chugg Entertainment are thrilled to confirm that rock legend, Robert Plant, will also be performing a series of headline shows in Australia & New Zealand along with his band the Sensational Space Shifters. The tour kicks off at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre on Tuesday 26 March, then Sydney Entertainment Centre on Thursday 28 March, Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena on Wednesday 3 April before finishing up the Australian leg at Launceston’s Silverdome on Friday 5 April. It then heads to New Zealand to play shows at the TSB Arena in Wellington on Tuesday 9 April and Auckland’s Vector Arena on Thursday 11 April. Why is it that we’re still hanging on every word Robert Plant sings? Why are his recordings so eagerly anticipated over 40 years into his career in popular music? Two reasons stand out above all others… First; his voice. Surely the predominant element in reaching listeners, in making a connection with each individual, is a compelling voice. Plant’s vocals are compelling in spades: the tone, capable of everything from heartbreaking tenderness to a trademark edginess, the phrasing that lends a distinct urgency, and, perhaps most importantly, the sense of poetry, of mystery. The second reason for Plant’s enduring ability to draw us in is that through all these years, he’s remained curious - really curious. Not content to reconstruct one of the most successful bands in the history of rock or even to stay with a particular sound for too long, Plant seems to have an unquenchable thirst for music that moves him - whether it is to be found in Northern Africa or deepest Appalachia.
Plant made his first commercial recordings in 1966, and the following year formed a group called Band of Joy with drummer John Bonham. Soon Bonham and Plant joined forces with guitarist Jimmy Page and bassist John Paul Jones to form The New Yardbirds, which not long after became Led Zeppelin. Since the band’s separation in 1980 following Bonham’s death, Plant has spent 32 years travelling the world drawing from unique and exciting musicians from around the globe, continuing
29
the musical evolution that kicked off 45 years ago. Forever putting his wide-ranging musical fascination to good use on solo albums, with Jimmy Page, and in recordings with bands like The Honeydrippers, Priory of Brion, and Strange Sensation. Plant continued to expand his horizons with 2007′s collaboration with Alison Krauss on Raising Sand. Produced by T-Bone Burnett, the album’s unlikely but magnificent blend earned innumerable critical raves as well as six Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year (for Please Read the Letter, a Plant/Page song). In 2010 he released an album with the Band of Joy co-produced by his band mate Buddy Miller (electric guitar, baritone, 6string bass, mandoguitar) and with fellow musicians Darrell Scott (acoustic guitar, mandolin, octave mandolin, banjo, accordion, pedal steel and lap steel guitar), Byron House (bass), Marco Giovino (drums and percussion) which also received 2 Grammy Award nominations. The Sensational Space Shifters are his latest project, a loose band "inspired by the roots music of Mississippi, Appalachia, Gambia, Bristol and the foothills of Wolverhampton and drawing on influences collected in a lifetime of meander and journeying." Along-side Robert are his semi-regular guitarist Justin Adams and Juldeh Camara from Gambia, Justin's Ritti playing partner in their duo Juju. Exciting audiences around the world, he presents songs from his early days in Led Zeppelin to his more recent adventures in the heart land of the US, in dizzy collisions of rhythm and power. His current companions have created a performance that digs deep into the roots of the blues, turning ancient, dark music that inspired so much of British and American rock on its heard. He mixes crazy trans-rhythms and psychedelic to create a powerful and unique adventure.
JUST ANNOUNCED Led Zeppelin will receive the Inaugural International Lifetime Achievement Award at the ECHO Awards in Berlin on 31st March 2013…..Both Jimmy and John Paul will accept the award on behalf of the band due to Robert’s pre existing concert on the same night in Singapore AUSTRALIA WE CONGRATULATE YOU……….

Ten legends of Australian music have the honour of being immortalised on a postage stamp as the recipients of the 2013 Australia Post Legends award. This year's Australia Post Australian Legends are the iconic bands Cold Chisel, Men At Work, INXS, The Seekers and AC/DC; individual artists Kylie Minogue, John Farnham AO, Olivia Newton-John AO and Paul Kelly; and the one and only Ian "Molly" Meldrum. They have been recognised for their influence and impact on music in Australia, and for taking Australian music to the world's stage. They are household names and their influence spans across several generations of music fans. Michael Gudinski, Chairman of The Mushroom Group and Managing Director of The Frontier Touring Company, chaired the selection panel for the stamps and acknowledges it was a difficult choice with such rich musical talent in Australia to choose from. As one of the most recognisable and influential figures in Australian Music, Ian ‘Molly' Meldrum is a music legend in his own right, but has also played an integral role in the careers of many of the other Legends and has showcased their talents to the world. "The Australian musicians honoured on these stamps have world-wide respect from the industry so it's great to see Australia Post recognising their impact and success. Not only have these artists taken Australian music to the world, but they have influenced generations of current Australian acts and pioneered pathways to international success," said Meldrum. "I'm excited to have been able to go along for the ride as their careers have gone from strength to strength," he added. (courtesy of www.auspost.com.au)

DEEP PURPLE TOURING IN 2013 JThey remain the quintessential vintage rock band - playing the songs the people love … pushing the boundaries as individual instrumentalists, soloists without reservation, yet seamlessly integrated into the overall sound and texture of a unified group. This is the foundation on which Deep Purple has always thrived VintageRock.com.au They put on a show that captured perfectly everything Journey is about: effervescent vocals, sing-along hooks, and most importantly, a big sound with big ideas US Music Weekly Chugg Entertainment have today announced details of the rock ‘n roll summer bill of the year with legendary groups DEEP PURPLE and JOURNEY set to tour New Zealand and Australia in February/March, 2013. DEEP PURPLE has sold over 100 million albums worldwide with iconic hits including Black Night, Highway Star, Space Truckin’, Hush, My Woman From Tokyo, Perfect Strangers and Knocking At Your Backdoor and Smoke on the Water, arguably the song known by generations of music lovers worldwide and celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Having amassed so many songs that get coined under the “classic” moniker, set lists have been a never-ending debate among diehards and newer fans. But DEEP PURPLE has been more than in synch with fans’ tastes to remain a powerful drawing force since their formation in 1968. Nominated for the 2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, DEEP PURPLE are currently preparing to unleash their latest album of brand new material in February, 2013. Ian Gillan: “What a fabulous tour. One of the most popular American rock bands of all time, they’ve created some of the best-known songs in modern music including Don’t Stop Believin’, Anyway You Want It, Faithfully, Who’s Cryin’ Now and Open Arms. Since 1973, they’ve earned 19 Top 40 singles and 25 Gold and Platinum albums in the US with their Greatest Hits album going 15 times Platinum. JOURNEY’s 2011 Eclipse World Tour was one of the band’s most successful tours ever, drawing nearly a million fans and ranked in the Top 15 Tours of the year. “Things are opening up everywhere we go,” states Neal Schon. “Journey is a world band now”. Chugg Entertainment’s Executive Chairman, Michael Chugg, said "To have two of the world's greatest ever rock bands on stage together is something we're so proud to be involved with. These shows are going to tear the house down!" Don’t miss your chance to see these two legendary rock acts share the stage in 2013

The tour kicks off with 2 shows in New Zealand, Christchurch’s AMI Stadium on Sunday 17 March and Vector Arena in Auckland on Tuesday 19 March, before making it’s way to Australia to play shows at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena on Thursday 21 March, Adelaide Entertainment Centre on Friday 22 March, Sydney Entertainment Centre on Wednesday 27 March and then Brisbane Entertainment Centre on Thursday 28 March. SANTANA One of the greatest musicians and legendary guitarists of our generation, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, Carlos Santana is set to ignite our stages once more. His style defies definition, immediately recognizable yet unlike any other, Santana's fusion of Latin rock, blues, soul and jazz comes in full swing on stage in a way that transcends time and the limits of genre typecasting. Delivered with a level of passion and soul equal to the legendary sonic charge of his guitar, the sound of Carlos Santana is one of the world's best-¬-known musical signatures. For more than four decades, Carlos Santana has sold more than 90 million records and reached more than 100 million fans at concerts worldwide. To date, Santana has won 10 Grammy® Awards, including a record-tying nine for a single project for 1999's Supernatural (including Album of the Year and Record of the Year for "Smooth"). The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame proclaim, "Guitarist Carlos Santana is one of rock's true virtuosos and guiding lights." Among many other honors, Carlos Santana has also been cited by Rolling Stone as #15 on their list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time." STEVE MILLER BAND Few musicians can boast the introduction that Miller had to music - his father who worked as a pathologist was friends with stars like Charles Mingus and Les Paul, whom he brought home as guests; Paul taught the young Miller some guitar chords and let him sit on recording sessions. With a career encompassing distinct stages from one of the top San Francisco blues-rockers during the late 60s and early 70s and then going on to become one of the top selling pop/rock acts of the mid to late 70s and early 80s. Steve Miller Band has sold more than 30 million records in a career spanning more than 40 years. His trademark blues-rock sound has made him one of the cornerstone legends of his genre. Award-winning albums like The Joker, Brave New World, Abracadabra and Fly Like An Eagle; and songs like: Gangster Of Love, Rock ‘n Me, Fly Like an Eagle, Jet Airliner, Jungle Love, The Joker, Abracadabra, Livin’ In The USA, Take the Money and Run, and Swingtown have cemented Steve Miller as one of rock music’s all-time greats.

To mark the 50th anniversary of Anthony Burgess' literary cult masterpiece, A Clockwork Orange will tour Australia in a high octane, muscular and arresting production. Direct from their sell-out UK performances, the cast of Action to the Word's physical theatre tour-de-force will head to Australia in April 2013. This award-winning all-male cast, led by actor Martin McCreadie (as Alex) is breath-taking in its treatment of the ultraviolent and highly sexual text and makes for testosterone-filled, electrifying and astonishing theatre. A Clockwork Orange lures its audience into the glorious glass-edged nastiness of Manchester's underworld. An unapologetic celebration of the human condition, this is the story of little Alex and his Droogs in their battle against the tedium of adolescence. Supressed violence and sexual desire mix in a dangerous and damaging cocktail as the young men battle through the difficulties of youth. A deeply hedonist piece, A Clockwork Orange explores sexuality, masculinity and aggression through contemporary music, exquisitely executed movement and the notoriety of Burgess text. It features a soundtrack of Gossip, David Bowie, Scissor Sisters, Placebo and of course Beethoven.

SYDNEYS STATELY THEATRE
This Majestic, elegant and most exquisite architectural historical theatre, has been a favourite of mine since I worked there back in the very early 1970’s with British Empire Films (part of the Greater Union Organization). I recall every morning walking into the palatial grand entrance way and standing in awe of its beauty , dreaming of walking down the Grand staircase dressed in my finest, before heading into the old and quaint lift which had a lovely gentleman opening its folding doors and guiding workers and visitors to their selective floors. He would sit on his stool in the lift and ask how we were that day and thanked us as he opened the doors to our offices. I have very fond memories of the magnificent State Theatre and would like to share a small part of her history with you. The State Theatre opened in 1929 with the Ernst Lubitsch film The Patriot (1928 film) on 7 June 1929. Seating 2775 people. The Theatre was designed by Sydney architect Henry Eli White and John Eberson and incorporates such eclectic elements as Gothic, Italian and Art deco design. It contains a 21 Rank Wurlitzer organ, one of three with the other two residing at and the (now demolished) Regent Theatre nearby and the State Theatre in Melbourne, and a Koh-i-Noor cut crystal chandelier which is the second largest on earth, weighing over four tonnes. The interior also included paintings by William Dobell and Julian Ashton. The building is listed on the Register of the National Estate. A gothic-styled shopping block 11 storeys high was opened above the theatre in 1930, but later converted to offices where the Greater Union Organization ran its Australian Head Office. A newsreel theatre, the first in Australia, was opened in the basement of the building in 1932. It later became a screening room. For over 70 years this Palace of Dreams has enchanted and captivated those who have enjoyed its palatial interiors. I implore readers to visit this grand theatre, take a tour and take a step back in time or attend the many great shows that the State Theatre hold. You then can walk the staircase, admire her beauty and sit where many a famous has sat to view the shows.
It certainly is a Palace of Dreams The State Theatre 49 Market Street Sydney. (02) 9373 6655 or (02) 9373 6852 www.statetheatre.com.au 41

MACCA ON TOUR Ian McNamara hits the road with his Gumboot Band and his musical mate Digger Revell, ‘the man with the big hat’, with a concert tour to celebrate his more than 30 years of ‘Australia All Over’, the legendary ABC Sunday morning radio show that connects Aussies all over this wide brown land, and around the world.
"Being a reporter is a wonderful way to get job satisfaction. You talk to different people every day and get to travel all over Australia, which ultimately became my life. I suppose the travelling started much earlier when I was a musician. You often had to travel to get work, a bit like a shearer or a contract harvester” The Macca concert tour which started in Gosford in October 2012 will be zig zagging across the country to finish in Tasmania in September 2013. The Macca tour will showcase the songs that have touched him and his listeners, spin a yarn or two and bring to the stage his genuine love of country that makes “Australia All Over” part of the Sunday morning ritual for so many people.
“Sunday Morning show has become the focus of my life really, not only because I enjoy revealing some of the characters of Australia but also because I have made so many wonderful friends.”
As he travels the country, Macca will also be joined by special guests, singing songs from his best-selling ‘Top 100’ CD and just like Sunday Morning, you never know who will show up! It’s a night of music, song and laughter. There’s a video montage of Macca’s many outside broadcasts and if you ask him nicely he might reprise his rock n’ roll days as one of Col Joye’s Joy Boys. I know he would love to see you, so……….. “Get on with it Macca”!
“My mum used to say after reading my mail for many years, how wonderful the listeners were. And that's the real privilege. Being taken into the confidence of so many wonderful Australians then meeting them at outside broadcasts or a concert.” THURSDAY MARCH 14 SHEPPARTON FRIDAY MARCH 15 SWAN HILL SATURDAY MARCH 16 BENDIGO THURSDAY APRIL 4 MACKAY FRIDAY APRIL 5 TOWNSVILLE SATURDAY APRIL 6 CAIRNS THURSDAY ARPIL 11 FRIDAY APRIL 12 SATURDAY APRIL 13

Black Sabbath is THE original Heavy Metal band- the proto-metal pioneers who started it all and in some ways, made it possible for all the other bands to be where they are today.
The group was formed by four teenage friends from Aston, near Birmingham, England: Anthony "Tony" Iommi (b. Feb 19, 1948), guitar; William "Bill" Ward (b. May 5, 1948), drums; John "Ozzy" Osbourne (b. December 3, 1948), vocals; and Terence "Geezer" Butler (b. July 17, 1949), bass. They originally called their jazz-blues band Polka Tulk, later renaming themselves Earth, and they played extensively in Europe. In early 1969, they decided to change their name again when they found that they were being mistaken for another group called Earth. More than 40 years on, this Iconic band continues to be held in the highest regard: “Greatest Metal Band of All Time” - MTV “Amongst the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time” - Rolling Stone “Iron Man…One of the Greatest Metal Songs of All Time” - VH-1 “Paranoid is the birthplace of heavy metal” - Time Magazine ck
Sabbath have sold over 70 million records worldwide.
