This One’s for Me
Mimo, Pagbabago?
As I have said earlier, I am beyond guilty myself of committing this nefarious thievery of meaningful time. I would be dumb to clear my slate for the sake of preaching I can’t even act upon myself. But my point is, let’s admit it, constantly being late is upon our hands. If not, then everyone will be late. But we know it is not true.

No Middle Ground In a society of rapidly escalating issues ranging from Facebook strife to political aberrations, where dynasties of abusive power and dominant apathy reign triumphant, it is fair to seek justice.

Activism has proven itself countless times in the world’s history of tyranny, corruption, and abuse—our very own country as a manifestation of such success. Yet, then again, every march of dissent against a frail system follows a parade of senseless disgust raining on social media and aimless attack to vulnerable protesters. Say for instance the violent dispersal of NutriAsia workers when hundreds of them rallied through the company gates in Laguna. Bloody pictures of employees surfaced on the media after the illegal dispersal by the police forces claiming violence from these employees whose front row only included children and elderly. Out of 19 people, including campus journalists, who were detained groundlessly, only one was found carrying a gun and a sachet of shabu—to which falls as a mere allegation of planting evidence. Needless to say, rallying or activism as a whole is not innately brutal. Rather, it is rooted on the brutally oppressive systems. Similarly, the NutriAsia workers were only calling out a broken promise of the administration in its discriminatory system of contractualization. If we keep on saying that activists cause violence, we are only supporting the unjust systems which activists are trying so hard, even risking their lives, to tear down. It is time to break loose of the apathy that has been ruining our impartiality. Remarks pointing out activism as selfish and as a baseless calling of attention break a part of it. Indeed, it is calling for attention, but not baseless. However, it is not planted on selfish acts of expression. Take Gretta Thunberg for example, a youth activist who has been promoting global actions against

climate change. She once said, “I don’t want you to listen to me, I want you to listen to the scientists, and I want you to unite behind the Science.” As an activist, she realizes that her movement, just like any activist, is not just about herself, but for the good of the many—the entire world, as for Greta. It is time we start seeing it that way. Moreover, what we need to understand is that activism is cultivated towards a goal. It calls nothing but to alter a faulty system to end social injustices, the injustice to 55 Lumad schools in Davao for one. These schools are temporarily closed simply because of unfounded allegations by National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon Jr. who accused these schools of teaching students the ideologies advocating against the government. It would be much of a shock if these schools of 11,000 students only wait for instructions. It is commendable that these young minds have eyes wide open to the suppression inflicted upon them and have the guts to stand against the oppressive system. These Lumads fairly aim to provide these kids the education that they deserve amidst the threats brought upon by no other than the president himself dating back to 2017 when he said, “Sabihin ko diyan sa mga Lumad ngayon, umalis kayo diyan. Bobombahan ko 'yan. Isali ko 'yang mga istruktura ninyo." To tell these institutions that they are rallying with unsubstantial bases is to say that it is fair not to deviate from the unideal government that presses its people to be its very own puppets. Activism is so powerful that even this faulty administration poses a two-faced approach when Duterte signed the Republic Act No. 11369 or the National Students' Day Act on August 8, recognizing the contributions of student activism in shaping leadership—the very same activism they brand to be signs of leftism. Whether we like it or not, so long as injustices flood the system, activism will be present. It is a matter of time we deviate from our apathy to start informing ourselves of the unjust system, to make a stand and to join in discourses. It is either we support the idea of activism, or we support suffocating injustices—there is no middle ground.

MULAT.
Kauna-unahang Student Life Fair, ibinunsod Iba’t ibang organisasyon, ipinamalas ang kani-kanilang talento, adhikain NI RACHELLE PAJA PANAWAGAN.
“We wanted to come up with something unique while it being still relatable to our principle as a debate group,” isinaad ni Dara Sofia Cartujano, kasapi ng DC. Dagdag pa niya, “If there wasn’t any problem, we wouldn’t be debating about it.”
“There’s a lot of audience. That’s pretty much it. We’re given an opportunity to bring up these problems to so many, many people to see and we didn’t want to pass up that opportunity,” saad naman ni Cartujano nang tanungin kung bakit nila napiling isabay sa pagdiriwang ang ginawang protesta. Pagpapatuloy pa niya, “I’m glad that we took up the challenge. I wouldn’t mind if the next debaters would do the same thing.” ITULOY SA 04
UNC bares new execs, pledges new dev’t plans BY MARIA JUVY LEA VIOLETA Promising developments disclosed, UNC bared the names of new executive officials, such as Engr. Leon Palmiano as the new vice-president for administration (VPA) and Engr. Christine Bautista as the new College of Engineering and Architecture (EA) fean at the start of the school year. VPA Palmiano discloses installment of new buildings, to lobby space problems Immediately after taking office, VPA Palmiano facilitated the formalization of the Master Development Plan which is “supposed to construct four more new buildings for the students and of course for the various offices of the university.” He estimated that in 2 years, one out of four will be completed. “I didn’t expect na ganun siya kadali i-construct. tapos ganun din kabilis mapakinabangan ang mga ventilation, table, chair, napaka-comfy mag-aral, access sa wifi which is very helpful sa mga kagaya namin na on-the-spot ang homework,” Jonah of BSED Social Studies commented on the installment of new facilities under VPA Palmiano’s term. organizations, VPA Palmiano stated that “offices that are also not that convenient” top their priority. He added that the construction of the four new buildings will solve the university’s space problem and will probably allot the student organizations their own offices. “The administration has provided for us only our practice area, the UNC Museum, a space that is not conducive enough for a group with more than 35 members,” a representative of Glee Club voiced out, hoping that the promised new buildings will solve the congestion in the university and provide student organizations the offices equipped with their needs. While the administration laid out their plans, VPA Palmiano also called for the cooperation of all the UNCeans, “The university is doing everything to give you the best facility that we can afford but we need your cooperation in the maintenance of the facilities.” Engr. UNC adopts new academic calendar, shifts from June to July BY CHELLVIN MAE ROBLES Pertinent to the provisions of the Higher Education Act (RA 7722), the university opened its academic year in July for the first time starting AY 2019-2020. Issued by Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Chairman J. Prospero E. de Vera III, the memo states that all state universities (SUCs) and local universities and colleges (LUCs) are enjoined to synchronize its respective Academic Year to a Fiscal Year starting FY 2019 and to ensure that starting FY 2020, all SUCs and LUCs have synchronize their academic year to a fiscal year. It was also stated in the Section 3 of RA 7722 that “higher education institutions shall start the school year on the first Monday of June but not later than last day of August.” Engineer Janet Naag, education supervisor of CHED-Bicol, on her statement in Philippine News Agency,

College of Law and Architecture students occupy the three-storey building built with Internet access and air conditioner units. Ar. John Francis Realubit, director for facilities, mentioned that there will be an audio-visual room however still unordered. Meanwhile, the Insitutionalized Community Extension Services office that was located at the AMS Building before is now transferred to NB. The building, together with its facilities, was built spacious and slightly modernized according to Ar. said that the shifting “is aimed at synchronizing the Philippine schools’ calendar with the schedule in other countries.” “The change in school calendar is also implemented in order to adjust with the release of budget for the government subsidies as offshoot of the free college education, particularly in government-run tertiary schools,” Engr. Naag added. State colleges. like the Bicol State College of Applied Sciences and Technology and the Central Bicol State University of Agriculture in Pili, started their academic year in August 2019, while private colleges, like UNC, the Ateneo de Naga University, the Universidad de Sta. Isabel, and the Naga College Foundation, started in July 2019. “Para sako, ayos man lang ang shifting ta garo natawan pa ako ning chance to prepare para sa college [ta freshman ako] kaso makalawion lang kaya ta mas sanay ako na June ang start kang klase,” Salcedo from the College of Education (CED) said when asked about her opinion in the shifting of academic calendar. Other students expressed that while the shifting called for necessary adjustments, it served an opportunity for them to find a summer job and to have enough preparations before the start of the classes. Pangalawa, mabibigyan pa ang students ng makapag-ipon from their extended summer jobs,” Jennalyn San Jose, elementary teacher, commented.

CHAMPIONING MUSIC UNC Marching Band ends 11-year title drought, tops reg’l band competition
BY JOHN PAUL BORITO Following a series of intensive training, the UNC Marching Band ended its 11-year title drought after winning first place in the 2019 Bicol Region Military Parade Competition last Sept. 14 at the JMR Coliseum. Veronica Abay, band leader, admitted that it was a tough year for the band considering that almost half of the members are new. Band Director Reymart Marticio shared the same frustration and admitted his hesitation to join the competition, which they missed for the last two years, but because of their members’ persistence, they pursued to join.
then after class (8:30 PM) yun, report ng lahat sa bandroom kase ‘pag 9:00 PM mag-uumpisa ‘yon practice,” Abay shared how they managed to get pasts their experiences. Abay also pointed out their struggles and how unity pulled the best out of the band. Mariticio likewise added, “The training was not so easy. First of all the newbies and availability of the facilities for our practices so we had night practices and utilized holidays and weekends for the tight trainings.” “Sobrang saya syempre kase di namen yun ine-expect. Sabi nga namin, ‘kahit mag-third lang kami,’ okay na samin ‘yon basta pasok,” Abay said
on how proud she was to be part of the winning band. “Delighted, greatly pleasured, very proud, thankful... it was a mixture of happiness and pride as being hailed the champion of Bicol Regional Band exhibition,” Marticio expressed how he felt upon clinching the title. He added, ”All of the efforts, sleepless nights and sacrifices are paid off.” Meanwhile, Abay also extended her gratitude to Steve Briones, former band leader, who choreographed their winning exhibition while constantly animating their spirits to not give up. Abay will be exiting the band next year to focus on her academic duties but pledged to offer full support on her bandmates to put up a good fight in defending their title next year. “May tiwala ako sa mga ka-member ko. As long as magkakaisa lang sila, may disiplina, ibigay ‘yong best during competition, i-enjoy ‘yong moment at syempre magpaka-humble lang.”
“Kasi for me, ‘di porket kayo ‘yong nanalo eh kayo na lang lagi ang magaling, lagi dapat natin iniisip that in every competition, meron at merong magagaling diyan na iba,” Abay commented amidst the recoil of some people in social media after securing their historic marching band title. “We will strive to improve our trainings and transcend our performance for us to defend our title as champion. From 1st to number 1!” Marticio eyed winning the same title next year.

“To never see debating as a mere means to intellectually masturbate. FSOFS unites stude-orgs for Inter-OFS 1 BY DARYL STA. CRUZ Highlighting academic prowess through friendly competitions, the Interorganizations, Fraternities and Sororities (Inter-OFS) kicked off its first part concluded last Aug. 14-15. The Federation of Student Organizations, Fraternities, and Sororities (FSOFS) headed the event as different organizations battled against one another with the theme, “Magnifico: A Magical Journey Towards Excellence and Camaraderie in a Nurturing Environment.” FSOFS hosted this year’s “Ipadyak Mo!” in which United Architects of the Philippines Student Auxiliary (UAPSA) bagged the 1st place after proving their creative mastery in designing pedicab floats. Science Society (SciSoc) and Junior Marketing Professionals (JMP) rounded up the list of winners placing 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (JPIA) topped all competitors in “Politika Scientia” followed by Society of Junior Fellows (SJF) and UAPSA. SciSoc clinched the top spot in “Kahoot” with Nukkapa Phi Nukkapa Beta (NKPNKB) finished on the 2nd place, and Youth Entrepreneur Society (YES) in third.
NKP-NKB secured victory in “Genius Junior” after defeating 2nd and 3rd placers Philippine Society of Computer Engineers and SJF, respectively. SJF, on the other hand, amassed the top seed in the “Essay Yan!” with Junior Bankers and Financiers Association (JBFA) winning the 2nd place, and Christ Youth in Action (CYA) closing out the contest in 3rd place. Institute of Electronics Engineers of the Philippines (IECEP) showed dominion in “Mathalino Ka Ba?” leaving the Institute of Integrated ELectrical Engineers (IIEE) in 2nd spot and Professional Education Core Group (PECG) in the 3rd spot. PECG also triumphed in “Science Qriosity” winning over SJF (2nd place) and IECEP (3rd place) to claim the 1st place. Winning against all participating organizations, SciSoc reaped the Overall Best Organization in this year’s Inter-OFS Part 1. “Everyone was involved and motivated to participate. I’m glad that all the hard work paid off. It was really just a bonus for the organization given that the priority is to enjoy the event and strengthen the bond of the members with another,” Lucky Ravago, SciSoc president, said. Meanwhile, JPIA and SJF settled for overall 2nd and 3rd placers, respectively.
and HS Finals Judge) at Anabelita Villete (5th Best Judge). “Tournaments will smack you that there are many people far better than you. At these times, that lies the true challenge. The challenge not to doubt yourself, that you have to trust your training. Our failures and losses became our motivation to make every success and winnings fulfilling,” ani Villete sa isang panayam online. Nang tanungin ukol sa kanilang ginawang paghahanda, “Preparation was focused on rigid trainings and case building that are related to different socio-political issues in [the] status quo. But more than that, DS built emotional relationship among members that became the center of DS’s first Roco Cup Championship,” paglalahad ni Mark Aldrin Albonial, dating DS Minister of Training and Membership.

Nagueños march for equality
Hundreds join first ever city-wide Pride March BY CHAREY MAE ALVARADO Over 500 LGBTQ+ members, advocates, and allies marched together in the first ever Naga City-wide Pride March to campaign for gender equality, organized by the Naga City Youth Officials (CYO) last June 1. Tagged with the chant, “Maki-beki, ‘wag ma-shokot!” participants walked on the streets to Plaza Rizal from the JMR Coliseum waving their symbolic rainbow flags. CYO Councilor Alexisse Ione B. Blas, one of the project heads, said in an online interview that the event aimed to provide safe spaces, social inclusivity, and self-sense. “The CYO 2019 of Naga City came up with a solution to help make and ensure safe spaces for the LGBTQIA+ community through proposing a march that would strengthen their sense of selfacceptance, self-confidence, and social inclusivity,” Blas said. “Moreover, it also promotes and supports the cry of the community for their right to live in a trepidation free circle where their equal rights and opportunities, and legal rights are being highly upheld and this event greatly supported the people in combating the stigma and mistaken perception of the people towards LGBTQIA+ community,” she added. Madri Gras Competition followed the parade participated by LGBTQ+ members and supporters from the different villages in Naga. “The Mardi Gras competition served as an avenue for the candidates to voice out their advocacies regarding their rights as a member of the growing LGBTQIA+ community. Also, it served as a platform for them to walk with pride and integration as they stand to promote peace, justice, love, and equality,” project head said. Participants wore their exhibited costumes and advocacies crowning Dixon Maravilla Tripulca as the Best in adVOKAcy winner. “The experience was a one of a kind. With the word Pride, the definition itself was what I felt. Simply being part of the celebration itself was indeed a pride. There was this overwhelming feeling knowing that you were there to help cement the triumph of our long journey in fighting for our existence and human rights’ A manifestation of hard work and perseverance to all of us, with our kind,” Tripulca said. Tripulca’s advocacy focused on the SOGIE Bill, an ordinance providing for a comprehensive anti-discrimination policy on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity and expression (SOGIE) which was authored by the City Officials. Vice-Mayor Cecilia B. Veluz-De Asis, co-sponsored by Councilors Joselito S.A. Del Rosario, and Mary Kyle Francine B. I took several deep breaths, many mind extractions, a lot of heart real emotions to help me express everything with sincerity. I based all from my real experiences, struggles taking my own journey, from someone who fought the battle of gender status, sharing how it feels, really good to celebrate how far I have become successful with it. UNC Wi-Fi denies access, only 50% granted BY JESSEBEL NIEVA Students showed dismay regarding the accessibility of the campus Wi-Fi as by far only half of the populace can avail of the internet connection, Sandee N. Flores, Network and Communication head, confirmed in August 2019. Issues concerning the unsatisfactory access include inaccessible connectivity, failure to log in using web portal, and limited time duration of the internet connection. “Since last year pa ng installment, hindi ko pa nagagamit ‘yong account ko to connect. Tuloy nakikihiram pa ako ng account para makaaccess,” a student extended his frustration. According to Flores, to be able to utilize the newly
installed facilities, first you need to have a device that supports this technology. Second is a valid credential to get into the system portal where the username is the student I.D. number and the password is the one used in the web portal. He stated that one of the factors to login failure is the software issue—problems include intermittent, random, or spotty wireless access rooted from outdated device drivers.
He explained that another cause is the number of Access Points (AP) where only 30 users can connect per AP within the area. Consequently, only 46 APs were deployed within the campus covering selected lobbies, parking areas, and the new building pavilion. Flores added that the location is also an aspect. Users may not be within the signal coverage of the managed APs, whereas some areas have no service or signal at all.

UNC safe amidst nat’l dengue outbreak BY CYEN ESCLANDA
UNC college of Arts and Sciences (AS) concorded a partnership with the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) for the establishment of the first-ever Center for Human Rights Education (CHRE) in the entire province, signed last July 29 at the UNC Social Hall. This center is the first in Camarines Sur which was designed to heighten the awareness of students and university employees about the value of human rights. “The main objective of putting [it up] is to educate, of course, our students, our employees about human rights,” Kenjie Jimenea, AS College dean, stated. To support the Human Trafficking Forum of the College of Criminal Justice Education, August was part of their initial activities aside from sponsoring fora among its adopted barangays by inviting volunteer-teachers to be part of the Speakers Bureau for Human Rights who will discuss the importance of these rights. “With the help of the CHR, we might partner with local government units and at the same time push for the establishment of Barangay Human Rights Council in Naga,” Jimenea added. In establishing CHRE, the administration projected an increase in student’s awareness and that the university will become the leading institution in promoting human rights awareness in the entire province of Camarines Sur. Meanwhile, the AS Office, located at 108 AMS Building, will serve as the center office where they will display human rights book and pamphlets from CHR.
Additionally, in order to manage the resources and allow others to connect as well, each student has three hours per day limit. If exceeded, the user’s account will be automatically blocked. Meanwhile, if students wish to extend its time limit from the admin, they should file a request and valid reasons must be provided. “Nonetheless, some complications regarding to the accessibility of Wi-Fi are usually case-to-case basis, so it is most advisable to send us a request at icthelpdesk@unc.edu.ph or visit our office-ICT, 2nd Floor, JH Building,” Flores suggested to improve Wi-Fi accessibility.
The campus, so far, has not shown any sign of dengue outbreak according to Melanie Villarande, university nurse, amidst the national dengue outbreak for the past few months.

In an interview, Villarande stated that they recorded merely 2 to 3 out of 10 students to be suspected with dengue. Furthermore, the campus is aware of the mosquito infestation and dengue itself following its historical background to be a marshland that up to now, puddles of stagnant water are still inevitable. In this regard, the Health Office is doing measures to prevent dengue outbreak in the university through campus-wide cleaning, throwing stock waters, spraying mosquito killers and other means to mitigate mosquito infestation. Villarande also added that the clinic is providing treatment and referral of students suspected with dengue and is providing student’s medical certificates to excuse them from their classes. To get rid of dengue, Villarande added to avoid stagnant water and dim places, use mosquito repellents, and to maintain a healthy well-being.

“I really enjoyed the event because I felt that we, students, were given the time to chill out for a day from all the paper works we have in school,” bahagi ni Jolina Salced, mag-aaral ng College of Education. “It was fun especially the booths in every organization and department. It somehow helped us boost our motivation to study well,” ayon naman kay Lorely Dolor, BSBA, nang tanungin tungkol sa kanyang karanasan sa Student Life Fair. “I’ll rate it 10,” dagdag pa nito.
“The correlation courses issue, because that’s the critical part, ‘yan ‘yong last three subjects of board courses for Civil, Electrical, Electronics and Mechanical Engineers,” Bautista said. She added that while students who fail these classes will not graduate, there is now a solution to this recurring issue. EA now offers the “Expanded Opportunity”, a program taking effect this school year onwards. “Instead of giving a grade of five (5), they will be given a grade of IP (In Progress),” she explained how the program follows. The office will then call upon an IP removal for these students requiring them to pass one examination. Furthermore, there has been a rising dissatisfaction with the lighting fixtures along the EA hallways bringing discomfort. “Makatakot. Kadakol akong naiisip na nakakatakot,” Engr. Bautista noticed the same problem herself and took initiative to request proper lighting by January. Another new development that the EA Dean was excited to share about is the internationalization program. “Our initial target is the architecture students. We’re trying to have partners with the University of Birmingham. For Engineering, our targets are asian countries,” she said. Meanwhile, Engr. Bautista imparted her principles of leadership. “So far it was challenging, stressful because of the transition but fulfilling. I love challenges. Once I really want to do it, I’ll make sure to do it,” she ended.

‘Upright and Brave’ 2019 MOVERS urges UNCean leaders to stand united
BY CHAREY MAE ALVARADO In pursuit of uniting and upskilling UNCean student-leaders, the 2019 Management of Organizations for Visible Effectiveness, Responsibility and Service (MOVERS) established leadership trainings through breakout sessions and plenary talks led by the Ayala Young Leaders Congress (AYLC) delegates last July 5-7 at the UNC Campus.
Ayon sa kanya, “It will just ensure the protection of one vulnerable members of our society and these are the women, and it will serve as a warning that we should respect women at all times, and all cost if not there will be fine and be penalized by law.” “It is also a manifestation that In Philippine Society there is really need for us to provide certain regulations that will address of behavior of men towards women. It is ironic but seems President (Duterte) signed the law it seems he recognized the importance of protecting women. It will be something preventing him from doing such,” dagdag niya. Ayon naman kay Jonnalyn Alinday, Associate Guidance Counselor, “It’s good naman kasi it promotes gender equality sa mga female kadalasan because mas malakas daw yung male gender kaya tig-te-take advantage na nila ang mga women pero proteksyon naman siya para maprevent na itong pagbabastos para healthy environment.”
With the theme, “Upright and Brave,” the leadership training came off for three days and two nights. “The preparations started early as we were guided by Ma’am Kim Bigay, director for the student affairs. The planning included all the department chairpersons, org presidents and student leaders for them to also give their suggestions to make this event better,” Christine Burce, member of the organizing team, explained. Burce admitted that the planning was tough because they wanted to create a different experience of MOVERS this year without compromising the expenses. Burce also revealed that the execution was “a bit hard” considering that everyone was busy for the start of the school year, but “Overall, we are satisfied on the outcome. We built camaraderie between leaders of different organizations and departments,”she added. MOVERS 2019 was made possible through the cooperation of the University Student Government (USG), Federation of Student Organization, Fraternities and Sororities, the university administration, and the AYLC delegates. The first day of the said training
was toned up by Mary Allysa Jenica Sariba, AYLC Delegate Batch 2012 asing student-leaders why they joined in MOVERS. “Why are you here is simply because you stepped up,” she pointed. It was followed by the plenary Ttalk of Dr. Butch Saulon and a then a panel discussion by Dr. Armin A. Fullante, assistant vice-president for student affairs and services, Juvin Durante and Magello Fenis, former USG president and vice-president, and Ruby Jane Bandola, moderator and AYLC delegate. “Mas intimate, according to participants and sabi nila (other student-leaders) ‘di maiiwasan ‘di maiyak. Laging may iiyak-iiyak every talk,” Cherelyn Comeda, head facilitator, said on how MOVERS differed from the previous years. “As a freshman, I really don’t have this prior knowledge as to what MOVERS is. I joined because, first, our org doesn’t have participants yet, second, I also wanted to explore things. And yes, I didn’t failed because MOVERS became a good, if not perfect, jumpstart for me as I enter college because I got to meet those individuals who are leading and serving the student body. I got to mingle and of course learn from them
specifically through those discussions and all,” Krisle Gaile Bismonte, participant and Political Science student, said. “My experience was so worthwhile, fun, informative, and also helpful for me as a student and individual as well,” Bismonte expressed. In the evening of the first day, there was a workshop session on accountability, Ayala Young Leaders Association Bicol Union (AYLAB-U) presentation and indoor activities. Joshua James Diño, Francisca Sabdao, and Emmanuel Tejada talked about Layout and Design, Community Outreach, Financial Management, and Marketing and Sponsorship, repsectively, through a sponsored workshop. Outdoor challenges with the advisers followed dividing studentleaders into groups to perform team building and plenary talk about stewardship given by Angelica R. Cadag, RGC, university guidance director. “Less participants ngayon, sumabay kasi sa pasok laging may umalis-alis, [pero] ‘yon wala namang pasaway,” Comeda commented on the number of participants. The event closed with a panel discussion by Client Vincent Belen and

Vetoed ‘End Endo’ Bill frustrates working students BY JHEZYLLE FAYE LORIA A backlash from UNC working students hit as Presidential Spokesperson Panelo announced the president vetoed the anti-endo bill last July 26. “Paasa. I mean ‘di siya matatapos sa said target date, if ever na maabot ng endo,” Judy Ann Portugueze, working student, extended her viewpoint. Sen. Joel Villanueva, principal author of the bill, said that the loss of profit was always taken into consideration. Stakeholders must also put the welfare of contractual employees in mind. “We are always concerned of how much of our profit will be eroded by the SOT (Security of Tenure) bill. Ang hiling po sana natin sa usapin ng security of tenure ay makiisa sa mga manggagawa na ang iniisip lagi ay pantustos sa kanilang pamilya tuwing mae-endo,” Villanueva said in a statement. Meanwhile, in an interview from CNN Philippines, Kilusang Mayo Uno member Jerome Adonis stated that it was clearly an act of betrayal and no balance at all. He sees it as pro-capitalist and anti-worker. The group performed a rally raising their grievances regarding the president’s action. The proposed measure was meant to eliminate subcontracting of labor and limit job contracting to licensed and specialized services. It aims to classify workers into regular and probationary employees and treat project and seasonal employees as regular employees.

The advocacies of other contestants, according to Blas, were focused more on gender equality, sensitivity, HIV/AIDS Awareness, and empowering the LGBTQIA+ rights. “As a supporter of the LGBTQIA+ community, we saw their conviction in fighting for their rights despite of the increasing discrimination that is happening in our society today,” Blas said. She further expressed that they are standing together to support each other in adversity, and in celebrating love. “They have a community wherein acceptance, respect, and pride start within themselves. They stick together as they continuously work towards attaining freedom and respect,” Blas heightened.

This One’s For Me UNSAFE HAVEN JOHN PAUL BORITO @jpaulborito • jpaulborito@gmail.com
How many times have I not come on time? Countless. As a student who always comes late, reasons have come in an endless variety to choose from. Most of which my mind falsified to justify my bent actions. This broken logic seems not enough. The worst part is knowing that my action calls for change, but anyhow, progress remains out of sight. Oh, believe me, I have tried. Countless. And of course, I failed. Countless. It looks so bad coming late, isn’t it? Such a waste of time if you ask even a professional latecomer like me. Minutes are passing by mostly thinking of which reason to give this time. One goes down the endless thinking of how much time will pass before coming to the meetup place—barely doing things that matter. Frustrating, when you have slacked
off hours before the call time, and then find yourself cramming minutes before it. Stressing even that your sense of time seems senseless. You know it’s bad that even a schedule hardly makes a difference. You can’t even follow a mandated time for your classes, what more a schedule you constantly adjust? But let’s face it, you come late because you feel lazy doing things on time. For whatever reason, it may be that coming early does not matter to you as much as your feeble time usage. You can argue. But now think, if you do want to come early, why haven’t you, and why haven’t the others been able to do so? If not for your constant tardiness, do you think other reasons would justify being a regular latecomer? I doubt it. You know what looks even worse
I would be dumb to clear my slate for the sake of preaching I can’t even act upon myself.

Ika nga nila sa Ingles, ignorance is bliss.

I heard my neighbours having their usual morning gossip over a hot coffee and pandesal. One told her kumare, “Don’t ever enroll your unica hija in UP even if she already passed the exam. She would just become an activist.” I told myself, “Hmm.. what a waste, lots of students dream to go in UP.”
This exchange of ideas is important because it shapes how the society works for its betterment.
Anyway, it made me remember a strikingly candid quote that have seared into my consciousness from one of my favorite books, 1984 by George Orwell. It goes like this, “Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and until they have rebelled, they cannot become conscious.” This made me rethink about the discussions of my neighbour. What’s so wrong with activism, that some people are so against it? While sipping my coffee, I got a hold of my pen and my placard. This is currently the stance of some Filipino, that they perceived activism as a cancer of the society, but activists aren’t just posers or isn’t a useless whinner as others would portray. Activists have an important role in the society such as an advocate for change when others would just choose to allow the system to rot; an advocate for a solution when others would just settle for less if they think that
the problem isn’t affecting them much, even if it is already a burden to many. The citizens should be supporting a deed that brings progress to the society. But why the citizens? The citizens are the main asset of progress in a society. Of course, the power is vested upon them to decide on the fate of their future. The criteria are citizens with social awareness and understanding of issues that fly around and affect the society they’re involved in. A system needs a criticism; a checks and balances system. This is where activism enters; A movement from a member of the society who sees what needs to be addressed. Some people say that it’s useless because it does nothing. Many a times it has proven its power. EDSA People Power Revolution in 1986 is one proof that it can cause social change, where there was an active campaign which included

is that at the very least we show a lack of interest to the other party or worse, disrespect. This may not exactly be your intention, but on some levels, such things fall. We let people wait for unintentionally shifting the paramount importance to ourselves rather than the time we could be spending on important matters. If you do not feel bad wasting your time, at least feel ashamed for wasting others’ time. You may reason out that people have come used to your tardiness, but again, how far could our reasoning betray us? Far enough to make us think that constantly coming late is reasonable. Early birds are not dead, and the good thing, we can still flock with them soon enough—if only we learn to fly away from the chains of tardiness we so hardly tied ourselves into. Perhaps, this selfadmission could just be a way to go.
Mamulat at magmulat.
involving many people on the issues with peaceful means to voice out their power to overthrow dictatorship. The implication on the society when there is activism, especially when the students are involved, is that the people are aware of the social issues; they’re educated enough to grasp what’s happening and they’re willing to cause change and be an actual help to the society. This is now where exchange of ideas enter; discourse in short, proliferation of different ideas. If people are involved, discourse would be present. This exchange of ideas is important because it shapes how the society works for its betterment. The power of it lies within its ability to strengthen a knowledge. One proof is the involvement of people in the pork barrel scam. After the controversy, there were protesters and activists. People began sharing their views about the issue and even about their opinion whether to abolish the pork barrel as some view it as a fuel for corruption. It has created a network of knowledge regarding the issues of corruption in the Philippines for the citizens to scrutinize. I almost spilled my coffee and pandesal pondering. I finished writing in my placard. I’m ready to go with my advocacy campaign. What a day, the placard is white-blank just yesterday. Good thing that it’s now filled with black ink after being bothered by the noise outside my house.

Mula ng mag-aral sa Lyceum of the Philippines nagsimula ring maging aktibista.
JOSEPHINE ANNE “JO” LAPIRA

BY NEIL ANDREW FORMALEJO “Activism is a waste of time.” “Activism is a portal to becoming NPA (New People’s Army).” These are few instances where activism is generalized in terms of what it really is and what actually is the role of activism in the society. Defined by Merriam Dictionary, activism is “a doctrine or practice that emphasizes direct vigorous action especially in support of or opposition to one side of a controversial issue”. In simple words, it is an effort or campaign that aims to cause social change. However important the role of activism in the society is, there are still people who condone this just because they’re not fully aware about what it really is or in some instance, activism is portrayed as something negative by some people just because their beliefs don’t suit the beliefs of an activist. Activists are misfits in society, activists are toxic, and other labels you’d hear from other people. This lack of awareness is the reason why there are misconceptions about activism. Here are some of those misconceptions: Activists are terrorist Activism includes efforts like rally and propaganda. Some people confuse this action as an act of terrorism where in fact, these actions are peaceful and don’t incite the intention of causing terror and chaos. You can also hear generalization that when a student is from University of the Philippines (UP), they are terrorists since UP is well known for having activist students and active campaigns about different social issues. These actions actually serve as a platform to voice out a belief, values and principles, and send a message regarding a particular issue. The thin line between terrorism and activism is that terrorism uses extreme means as platform such as violence and destruction of peace where as activism has an organized manner of actions in response to an issue. It’s a waste of time “Activists are wasting their efforts for they achieve nothing, especially the students, where, instead of joining protest or rallies, they should just use their time for school.” Those are the common lines being said about activists. Some people think that activists gain nothing from what they’re doing and it doesn’t have an effect and cause a change. This narrative is entirely false. There are lots of instances already that prove activism really causes change. A great example of activism that has forwarded its goal is the Million People March that happened on August 23, 2013, where hundreds of thousands of people attended
in response to the pork barrel scam, opening the eyes of our citizens to the issues of corruption in government and misuse of funds. Activism is a movement that always oppose the government When some people hear the word activism, it’s registered in their minds that they’re already against the government when it’s not always the case. Activism can be anything as long as it is a social issue. Activism is not entirely limited to being against government propaganda. This social issues under the wing of activism are actually broad; it can be environmental, supporting a bill (i.e., SOGIE bill, RH bill) to make people aware of the benefits of the bill and clear out the misconceptions surrounding it, supporting equality (race, gender, religion etc.), and many more. Activism is a fancy name for people who just want to whine and complain “Protest here, protest there. The never ending complaints. Why don’t they just do something instead of complaining, cuz action counts more than words do?” Some people think that it would be much better to focus their effort on working out the issue the activist complains about rather than make campaigns about it. It’s true that people need to exert effort, but as a society, it’s also the citizens job to make sure that in everything, there are checks and balances and make sure that the status quo won’t stagnate in progress especially if there are issues that needs to be called out. Sure, if you want to help the environment you can begin by yourself like proper waste disposal and less consumption of plastic, but your effort is not enough especially if the people around you are not fully aware. It then becomes your job, as a part of society to call out the issue because the

particular society where you’re involved and so as the people who don’t care are the ones affected if it worsens and would reap the benefits if the environmental issue is resolved. Activism efforts like rallies and protests are messy and cause disturbances of social order It’s true that rallies and protest utilize public spaces, such as parks and streets, but it’s not their fault that they do so. These open streets become their space for voicing out their beliefs and exercise the democratic power they have especially in issues that concern the involvement of people and the government. Why? The government has outlawed some space where they can freely express themselves, such as in front of a government building where they can be heard. Here is a clear view of the issue. Mendiola, a place in the busy crossing of Manila became a wellknown venue for protest. This is for the reason that the Malacanang Freedom Park was declared
as “no-rally zone”. Logically, it is wider and won’t clog any road but the government has outlawed free spaces like this. It’s not true that protests cause social disturbances. Just like the incident where some of NutriAsia workers in Marilao plant in Bulacan having a peaceful protest in front of the establishment because their rights as workers were trampled by the company; like having unsafe workplace and low salary. The guards have engaged in attacking the protesters. In this instance, it’s not the protesters who caused to engage in this disturbances but the guards. How about the EDSA Revolution? It’s also proof that protests and rallies can be peaceful. Activism is a hot issue especially that it has already become popular and even younger members of society are getting involved. The efforts involved in their cause is for the betterment of society by trying to address issues. Awareness is an essential fuel for progress, but collective actions further kindle it.

What Burns From Within THE ANATOMY OF A SOCIAL ACTIVIST BY CATHERINE BUENA AND NORENE CANTOR
Earlier today, I was called in by the resident doctor-he would like for me to assist him in a procedure that can only be done by people like him. I wasn’t really hyped on the idea of doing it but it would become an added learning experience for me. I tied my hair up, washed my hands thoroughly, put on a clean pair of white gloves, wore a disposable mask, and lastly, to complete my outfit, put on the goggles. He started cutting.
“Y-incision,” I recalled as if he’s conducting an oral recitation. He continued until the body is opened up; it felt like butchering a human being it’s just that this is for a good cause. “Why are we doing this?” I asked. I don’t really know what happened to this poor, young being but the family wanted an autopsy. “The body was found floating in the river, we were lucky to identify him,” the resident doctor answered. “Livor mortis,” I said under my breath. I can see the discolorations in the body bluish-purple hues scattered in the face, upper chest, hands, and feet. He then added that the boy was last seen during the rally near the park. He was identified as one of the young activists who called for the peaceful gathering of students from the differing universities nestled here in the hustle and bustle of the main city. Before I can even state facts about the body after reviewing his chart, the resident doctor started taking out his organs. He started with the heart. I was supposed to write observations and descriptions for us to compare it with the normal, however, I found myself suddenly making up observations on how to identify an activist by merely looking at his organs. The heart. This is where the passion and the burning desire to do what is right come from. This fueled his body, not just of blood, but also with undying anger towards the injustice, the wrongs and the evildoings of society. Every beat is savory of extreme love and compassion towards the oppressed. Its scars tell how much blood it poured out for humanity. The heart is neither too soft nor too hard-it fights because it cares. The liver. This filters the priorities of an activist -- what must be done first? It breaks down harmful intentions and helps in excretion of over-thought possibilities. This ultimately turns every toxic trait to a useful one. This strengthens his immunity from infectious brainwashers, helps him fight crippling hesitations and uncertainties in risking. The lungs. In charge of taking in factual information and taking out the ones which are not true and valid. The activist survives because the lungs normally detoxify the body from falsified data and prevents him from being delusional. Not a single cell in his active body perishes from the pretentious touches of a rotten system, for the lungs, unfazed of polluted passives, always stabilizes his views. We moved on to the head and look for signs of trauma. I’ve observed that there is faint sight of blood located in the back of his head. “He was hit in the head but I would like to see more of his brain,” the resident doctor stated. He made a triangular incision across the top of the scalp. I can now see the brain; after his careful observation, he removed it from the head and now the brain is bare in all its glory. The brain. This is the prime mover of an activist’s holistic being. It has pioneered what the heart is speaking out; has given the liver
every right to decide what’s wrong and what’s right; and has empowered the lungs to breathe in justice and expel out oppression. It sees to itself and everything else that they are out of idle times. The brain makes sure it is undeformed with lies, along with the other organs. All its lobes are functioning and no space is wasted with unclear information in it. The hippocampus jots everything down and never forgets. Just as the activist is, the brain is never selfish-it functions for everything and not for itself. Ultimately, what it believes, the activist does. I glanced at his unmotioned being, and it emptied me to see that pale face seems to scream for justice. I’m still disheartened by the fact that people like him are always killed by what they are trying to kill, but I no longer am surprised. After a couple of hours removing organs from someone’s body, the resident doctor asked me to place all of them back where he had taken them. “You can sew him up.” he added. As he was writing notes on the chart, he suddenly stopped and recalled an incident from last week. “This is the third one we had this month-kids will never learn how to shut up and do what they have to do which is to sit down in class and actually study. They should think about their parents. Joining rallies is just a waste of time. You are wasting your time.” he turned his look towards me. I removed my mask, my gloves now sticky, tainted with blood and goo, removed the goggles and washed my hands thoroughly. Although the body died of a blunt head trauma not really something that I can get an infection from, I scrubbed and scrubbed and scrubbed until my hand turned red as if I was the one who had killed someone. Earlier today, I was called in to assist a resident pathologist conduct an autopsy to a young activist who had died because he was killed for his undying love for the country. He requested for me specifically today so that I can witness what happens to people -like me. Yes, a surgical intern who is also an activist. And believe me when I say that an activist doesn’t really have an ideal image of a person. Everyone of us can become an activist without throwing away our futurewe are fighting for our future. Guess he thought it would scare the hell out of me, but I’ve seen many deaths and I still am seeing more. Everyday, people are dying, not literally but figuratively. They are losing hope, they are close to giving up and that’s where we step in; that is where we step up. We step up for those who can’t and don’t want to. We step up for those who want to fight but are too scared to be identified. People against us think we’d be burned to ash by their hellfire of hatred and passive pessimism, but little do they know, they kindle our passion more. We make no other choice-we step up. Since your promotion, what are the problems in the university have you encountered under your office and what are your plans in solving these?

SEAT HOT Actually since I achieved office here, there are no major problems that I had encountered; problems that are not considered as major problems. Some are minor problems only in terms of the processes that we need to follow up, like purchasing of materials and equipment that are needed in the University. I think we need to stream like some of the processes in the transaction of the University but I don't think there were major problems that I have encountered since I joined the University.
What can you say on the rumors that the New Building has been rushed in construction? We are asked in the sense of fastrack the construction. We need to finish the building before semester begins so we had to rush it but in terms of its quality. We are ensured that this building is safe and sound, that it has follow completely the plans and specifications. So yes it was rush in the sense that we need to finish the building in the shortest possible time.
with VPA Chito BY PATRICK JOSEPH PANAMBO
SEAT
As an Engineer, what are your plans under your new office and what can the students expect from it? We have just completed the Master Development plan of UNC and it’s now for the approval of the Board of Trustees and in that Master plan we are supposed to construct four more new buildings for the students and of course for the offices, the various offices of the university. Although it cannot be done, of course, all at the same time but in the next one or two years, we will be constructing already 1 of it so it will definitely benefit most of the students in the University.
Why are there rooms that doesn’t have airconditioning units yet like the JH Building and the AMS Building? Are there plans to extend the airconditioning system to these buildings for a fully air-conditioned campus?
A lot of students complain about AC units that are not functioning, especially in the 3rd floor of the New Building. What do you think should be done about this problem?
Yes, we have plans for that, the only thing is that we need to prioritize and our budgets are also limited but that’s the next priority. By next year we will be putting air-conditioning units in the JH, in the AMS building for the Senior High School, and hopefully, if the budget will still permit, we can include the Nursing Building, DHS building.
Actually, the aircon [units] there are ready for use. The only thing is that CASURECO has not commissioned our transformers yet although CASURECO has been here for the last two weeks and they have been checking our lines and that’s the reason why we cannot fully use all the equipment and then the air-conditioning units in that new building. But, I hope in the next two or three weeks, everything will already be finished.

During your first months, what were the accomplishments of your office and how did they benefit the university and the students? Actually we have done a lot already, like the new building was completed just a few months ago, and when it started, I mean although I was not yet the VP [for] Admin, but I am already involved in the planning and the bidding of the building. That is one of the major accomplishments that we are able to do, and aside from that ,I have done a lot of improvements, like the comfort rooms have been improve most of or all the comfort rooms are already new, including those in the Sports Palace. Also we have renovated and then repaired all the comfort rooms, and then the flooring of the playing court has been refurbished. We have also the new the common core running out under construction. It’s all going to work there, still going and some other minor works that we have done for the various offices in the University.

Kumusta daw si ibang factors na nakaka-affect kan acads and university life ta in general? Y'all, annoying man tong mga sinasabi kang mga tito saka tita na "It iS wRitTeN in YoUR hAndBoOk," ata ngani mayo man kita kaiyan kaidto. Know what, I was today years old lang kang naaraman kong ugwa na palan new version kang limited

But dawa pa, it's a right for a student to own a student handbook. For free man lang ini (pero dai ta araaaam).

BY JHEZYLLE FAYE LORIA NC19: Mayday! Mayday! Hello, EDSA19, this is Naga City19, message over. We’ve got a situation here. EDSA19: Ok, NC19, go ahead. NC19: Heavy traffic is happening throughout the city causing delay for some commuters at 13.6218° N, 123.1948° E. I repeat this is an emergency! EDSA19: Calm down. This is not the first time. I repeat, this not the first. We’ll send help after we resolve the situation here in our area first. NC19: I have no idea what is going to happen. HEELLLP! *toot! toot!* You would initially guess it as a distress call of newly recruited combat pilot to a seasoned officer but an unimaginable conversation between two areas experiencing heavy traffic here in the Philippines. Traffic is an old news already, but what’s new is that the “Queen City of Bicol” is experiencing it, aside from holidays and the Bicol’s pride “Peñafrancia Festival,” there has been no other traffic incidents occurred unless there is an accident. In 2015, the Philippine Statistics Authority recorded a total of 10,012 deaths from traffic crash incidents, 621 of occurred in the Bicol Region. According to the Philippine National Police, Naga City has the highest number of road crash incidents in the region, with a total of 4,743 recorded incidents from 2015 to July 2017, which hints it as a rising problem that should be addressed. During Jesse’s Once the queen city of the Bicol region, Naga in 1989 was a dispirited provincial town of 120,000 souls. Traffic clogged its tawdry business district and vice syndicates operated at will. Traffic was fast becoming a problem. City services were fitful at best. Meanwhile, thousands of squatters filled Naga’s vacant lands, despite the dearth of jobs in the city’s stagnant economy. Adding up to the current situation, Naga city was downgraded from first class city to third class which alarmed Robredo. He began with a strike against patronage. He moved the bus and jeepney terminals outside the city center, ending gridlock and spurring new enterprises at the city’s edge. In partnership with business, he revitalized Naga’s economy. By 1990, he put Naga back in its rightful place to being a first class city, which made the city love him more and elect him again.

The city said that the wheel clamp areas and tow away zones for vehicles include the Panganiban Drive, Magsaysay Avenue, Roxas Avenue along Diversion Road, Peñafrancia Avenue and other streets in the CBD 1 and 2 and those along the school zones. Moreover, roads along the circumference of the Naga City People’s Mall (NCPM) have been designated for parking space for free for the first two hours or less and a charge of P30 for the succeeding hours. The Wheel Clamp and Towing Task Group already started put up. Informative signs on the designated wheel clamp areas, parking spaces and prohibited parking areas and the dissemination of the same before the start of the full implementation of the policy this coming month of last year in the month of August. The group is composed of Philippine National Police and Public Safety Office (PSO) personnel. The PSO announced its invitation for interested towing service providers to apply for accreditation at the Sangguniang Panlungsod . With the strengthened policy on towing and wheel clamp, the city government hoped to maximize the use of city roads, streets, alleys and parking spaces to help ease the traffic situation in the city.
were able to cope with somehow with the clogging of streets. Ordinances alone are not effective if discipline cannot be applied by those who are involved. Some would see it as a typical scenario in a successful city, part of the progress as they would say, but the truth is that success cannot be measured through traffic congestion but how the city government manages it smoothly. We cannot blame everything to one, solutions should be well developed enough to eradicate the existing problem that serves as a threat to its city’s rise. Traffic is not a trivial matter to be ignored, but should be solved in an immediate way.
We cannot blame everything to one, solutions should be well developed enough to eradicate the existing problem that serves as a threat to its city’s rise.
Never enough With these two ordinances Naga City
Bongat continues the drive In hopes to maximize the use of the roads, the City Government of Naga has strengthened its policy on towing and wheel clamp. The Sangguniang Panlungsod of Naga recently passed the Ordinance No. 2018-018, also known as ‘The Towing and Expanded Wheel Clamp Ordinance of Naga City’. “The ordinance designates wheel clamp areas and tow- away zones, parking spaces and private lots for parking with charged parking fees, towing guidelines for firms, impounding areas, time of payment and auction sale, wheelclamp and illegal parking fees, remuneration of towing firms and accreditation of towing services,” the City Government said.

“The thing I miss the most in my stay at the University of Nueva Caceres is my experience in building relationship with other people especially friendship. I also miss all the challenges I faced throughout my journey at the University, like I got pregnant and had an awful experience but still because of my dreams I kept on going to finish my study and prove them that having a family at an early age doesn’t mean you can’t attain your dreams. It’s only a matter of hardwork and dedication. UNC helps me to be motivated in fulfilling my dreams. I also miss all my professors that share their knowledge to me and if it’s not because of them I will not be where I am. They are one of my billion motivations. YELLOW PREVAILS EA secures 18 Palaro ‘19 championship titles
BY CHAREY MAE ALVARADO Embodying competitiveness and heart to win, the College of Engineering and Architecture (EA) prevailed over the eight colleges securing 18 champ titles from the UNC Palaro held last Sept. 30 to Oct. 5 on the UNC Campus. The department grabbed golds from Basketball Men, Volleyball Women, Table Tennis Men (Single and Double), Sepak Takraw Team, Women’s Chess (Team Category) and Cheering Squad Competition. From the 18 championships, EA secured 10 of those from the Fun Games: 1x1 Basketball Men, Dodgeball, Patintero Men, Tug of War Men, Modified Marathon Men and Women, 50m Dash Men and Women, and 4x50m Relay Men and Women. “You know what, it’s amazing that for this year’s intramurals, there
are many EA students who are willing to participate in any events. That’s why it’s not a burden to us in EACC to look for the best players in each event. It took [us] more than a month of preparation for our players to be prepared from try-outs and practices,” Jordan Reyes, EA chairperson, uttered. On the other hand, College of Computer Studies champed and folds the board in Men’s Chess both individual and team categories after defeating EA (1st runner-up, individual), CBA (2nd runner-up, individual), CBA (1st runner-up, team),
CEA (2nd runner-up, team). While in Women’s Chess Individual, the College of Nursing (NUR) flipped up CBA (1st runner-up, Individual) and EA (2nd runner-up, Individual) into pieces and lastly for the Women’s Chess, EA hailed as the champion, while NUR takes the 1st runner-up, and the 2nd runner-up was taken by the College of Business and Accountancy (CBA) in team category. “I’m so much happy and thankful for the result of this year’s intramurals. And all of these were also because of the efforts and time of my EACC team
including our adviser and others EA Prof and other volunteers who worked on the preparation and also during the intramurals. Best things happen to those who work as a team,” Reyes added. Likewise, from one of the departments with smallest population the College of Arts and Sciences (AS) conquers the floor of Futsal as they grabbed the title from the defending champion, EA, which put down in 2nd runner-up and CED being the 1st runner-up. Not just a future educators but a singers as well, CED proved they talents in singing as they reigned as Vocal Duet and Vocal Solo champions. Meanwhile, NUR bagged the 1st runnerup and CAS claimed the 2nd runner-up
in Vocal Solo contest then in Vocal Duet contest AS and EA grabbed the first and second places, respectively. Moreover, CBA claimed the dance floor and affirmed as champion in Hip Hop and Cheerdance Competition along with CCS and CED who`d became the first and second placers in Hip Hop and NUR and CEA for the Cheerdance Competition. “Last year we have very few participants because of the population problem and even colleges were not participating much on the different events because of the challenge in entries of athletes. This year, I think it’s already returning back to our normal participation.” shared Coach Roel “Bing” Rosales, Director of Sports Development Office.

AS, EA kinoronahan sa MMP ‘19
“Masaya syempre nag-struggle kami sa first half eh.
Kinilala naman sina John Kristoffer Villar (EA) at Yvonne Furuta ng College of Business and Accountancy (CBA) bilang 1st runner-up.
“For me, Mr. and Ms. Palaro is not all about the physical aspect of a person. It’s about how you express yourself in front of people and how you influenced them to be more confident and help them to conquer their fears,” dagdag pa ni Panuelos. “Well, it is very important for me to won since the department trusted me to be the representative for the said event and it is their pride and honor that I’m bringing on that competition. Besides, I don’t want to let them down, so my part is to pay back the support and do my best,” giit ni Hilario.
CED, EA claim VB championship BY jOELYN ARLANTE Colleges of Education (CED) and Engineering and Architecture (EA) shared with the championship titles from the Volleyball Men and Women categories, respectively, in the UNC Palaro 2019. Depicting camaraderie within the team, CED showcased their prevailing attacks and rally points on the first minutes of the game that sent excitement to their audiences. William Labro, CED captain, has been consistent throwing his unpredictable doses of spikes every single minute making the opposing team struggle to regulate their performance. Nevertheless, the team has been outrageous offering boundless attacks and drop balls that terminated CEA in the first set, 25-21. On the second set, CEA is outstandingly determined to bounce back and steal the lead giving back powerful hits to the opponent. However, CED upset them by acquiring fastpace bullet attacks shredding opportunity of the other team to get into track. The game concluded by
the close match scores,25-23 declaring CED as victors retrieving their championship title last 2017. “Very happy kami kasi nabalik ulit ‘yong title namin bilang champion. Overwhelming and proud sa crowd ng Education kasi yaon sinda diyan pirmi para mag-support samo,” Labro said. “Win or lose, yaon sinda, and syempre sa teammates ko na yaon pirmi para magdangog, nag-effort para maging champion kami,” he added. CED triumphed against other runner-up departments, namely CEA as first runner-up and CBA as 2nd runner-up. Meanwhile, wearing the crown since last year’s championship, crowds bowed down as EA’s persistence won against CED in Women’s Volleyball Championship match last Oct. 5 at the UNC Sports Palace.
Regardless of the fact that EA was comprised of new team members and deficiencies in training, the group has set the fire, struggling to win against CED with a 4-points lead in the first set, 25-21. Although Perucho, CEA coach, admittedly stated that the players were being disturbed by the crowd, the team’s heightened determination smoothly invalidated CED with a straight set win, 25-17. Feeling ko, kulang din ‘yong practice and sobrang bago din ng team namin, so sobrang saya,” Cambronero, EA team captain, uttered upon claiming again the championship title, still undefeated. CEA banged CED and CCS landing as the first and second runners-up, respectively.

5-PEAT CHAMPIONSHIP CBA remains undefeated in Palaro Cheerdance Competition datihan; yung mindset ko kasi nun ipa-feel sa kanila na hindi sila dapat makampante, starting from zero until they made the whole routine. With their self-formulated choreographies, flies, and tosses, the College of Nursing (NUR) finished as 1st runner-up and the College of Engineering and Architecture (EA) placed next. Jasper Jay Cardente, CBA team coach, stated that they did not expect the results for some of their performers had their own flaws and experienced difficulties to compete with NUR department. “Katapat lang namin sa training ground ‘yong Nursing kaya all were motivated, even the Nursing. We treat them (NUR) as our rival, but treated it as friendly competition as well,”
he said. “Simple.
performances which struck the crowd. “We really do prepare for the UNC Palaro
Hip-Hop dance competition. As a group we became strict during practices and trainings. We made sure that we’d compete and be fight ready,” CBA team leader Brian James Bonsol uttered. “At first, it was really hard to adjust because most of our members are new to the competition. But, as their captain, I always told them to stay focused on every detail of our dance piece,” he added. When asked if who they think is the most threatening rival among the competitors, Bonsol said that, for him, it was the College of Computer Studies (CCS) although they were “first timers”, still they brought them up into a new level of competition that made them strive hard and get inspired to get the title. With the Disney songs as a theme, participants prepared their voices as well as their choreography and costumes to bring back childhood memories. Having five contestants for vocal solo, Ruth Benaid (CED) was hailed champion with her piece “Let It Go”. Maricris Valiente of College of Nursing, and Alma Agdoro from College of Arts and Sciences (AS) were runners-up. Among the three contestants in Vocal Duet, Joel Febres and Zoe Sandrino, representatives from CED, were bestowed as champions; AS as second place and College of Engineering and Architecture (EA) got the third spot. Sandrino (CED) explained that they only had one week to memorize the song and the choreography. They had their practice every night with their vocal coach who’s giving them some exercises.
“We were not expecting anything that night because first of all, our song was not as famous as the other Disney songs. We were not very confident, but we knew we gave our best that night,” she added. Febres also said that he didn’t expect the warm support of CED for him and his partner Sandrino. In an audience perspective, Maria Carmela Sales, Financial Management student, said that the different Disney songs which were showcased in the Musical Event brought her back to her childhood. “Some contestants really gave me goosebumps with their beautiful voices like the representatives from CAS,” Sales uttered. “The CED was indeed very competitive, with all their props and costumes as well. Nevertheless, I was also proud of my own department, despite some technical difficulties that occurred. I think all contestants did a great job during the said event,” Sales added.

Nakamit nila ang unang puwesto sa 1x1 Basketball Men, Patintero Men,Tug of War Men, Dodgeball, at Modified Marathon Men at Women. Men at Tug of War Women.
“Determination and eagerness to win is something that made them get the victory. Every games whether minor or major games the EA council had made sure na may mag assist para walang mapabayaan”, dagdag pa ni Reyes.
CULTURE OF EXCELLENCE. The College of Engineering and Architecture did not allow the other colleges to steal the Bench Cheering championship from them as they hit a back-to-back victory last Sept. 30 at the UNC Sports Palace. PHOTO BY JOHNELL

EA hits back-to-back Bench Cheering victory BY JESSEBEL NIEVA With the deafening yells echoed by the seven contending departments, the College of Engineering and Architecture (EA) cheering squad made it the loudest and the best in the Bench Cheering competition making them as the back-to-back champion in the UNC Palaro 2019, held last Sept. 30 at the UNC Sports Palace. One of the leaders of EA’s squad, Grace Del Valle, said that discipline, chosen loud class performers as their advantage, and openness of the team for suggestions were some of their keys in executing winning presentation and in prevailing in the said contest. Del Valle stressed that despite of their busy academic schedule; they made use of September holidays before the event and maximized the
availability of every member to practice. With the retro theme, the defending champs were successful in performing their own composition of cheers, yells, and the patterns and sequence of choreography as they were applauded by the crowd. Besides from winning the contest, EA also aimed to build friendship among them even after the announcement of winners. The team considered the ideas of the group as a whole including the designing of props and costumes which came from the majority’s decision as to how they made it to the top once again. “It felt very amazing that we are the winner. The struggles we had [were] replaced with a joyful moment,” expressed by John Albert Joven of EA regarding their triumph.
Bang!
Baka gusto mo pong pepsi? Aasdw!!dlowa@nosh^@ia~~~~~!
