SOUTHSIDE SOCIAL ROUND-UP A number of Southside eateries have made it to the finals for the highly regarded Scottish Italian Awards 2015. CATCH Fish & Chips, Gizzi’s Espresso Bar, Toni’s Pizzeria, The Battlefield Rest and Bella Napoli are amongst those hoping to scoop awards from a range of categories including best family restaurant, team, barista, pizza and fish and chips. Good luck to all! Shawlands is now a Nitezone area. It follows a £5,200 donation from Michele Pagliocca, owner of The Shed and The butterfly and the pig. The Nitezone service is aimed at ensuring local people get home safely with the assistance of marshals at supported taxi ranks. In November, Deanpark Nursery, Deanston Drive will celebrate its 40th birthday. To mark this special milestone it will be inviting pupils, past and present, to attend a 70s themed party. Groovy! There’s a new manager at Oddbins, Skirving Street. Jeau Cibau lives locally and has wealth of experience in the wine world. Pop in and say hello. Betty Beans owners, Pamela Martinolli and Debora Giusti, are hosting a Christmas Shopping Evening on Thursday 19 November from 6-9pm. Nibbles, bubbles and 20% discount are all on offer!

LOCAL BAR CELEBRATES ITS SECOND BIRTHDAY In October Jayz Bar turned two. To celebrate this special event the team at the popular neighbourhood bar had a weekend of live music, karaoke and some good old fashion fundraising, which secured over £500 for charity. In the past two years Jayz Bar has fast earned a reputation for being a live music hub, attracting a great mix of local people and ages. As well as live music and good food, the venue hosts a number of events and activities including a pop-up cinema, mother and toddler sessions, quiz night and free guitar lessons.

IT’S GETTING COLD AND DARK OUT THERE By Stephen Steele, owner of Corner Bikes I’m often asked if I cycle less in the winter and the answer is always a simple no. For me the bike is one of my main modes of transport, all year round. Winter commuting is becoming increasingly more popular, and getting to ride your bike in winter is similar to preparing your car, only it’s easier and a lot less expensive. To prepare your bike for colder climes I would always recommend a winter MOT. This involves ensuring mudguards, pedals, lights and reflectors are all in good working order. For you, reflective and water tight clothing, good gloves and neck warmer are a must. It’s going to be cold and dark out there. Bad weather such as snow, heavy rain or ice will mean drivers may have partially fogged windows. You and your bike must stand out.

SOUTHSIDE SOCIAL TALKS TO.... Patrick McVey, founder of Core Fitness Shed Boot Camp Where did the idea to hold boot camp sessions in a nightclub come from? I was in The Shed and one of my pals started doing press ups in the middle of the dance floor. I thought, hang on a minute that could work…! What sets your boot camp apart from other exercise courses? That’s an easy one, the coaches. Each of us bring expertise from different health and sporting areas including nutrition, sports science and physiotherapy. This knowledge and understanding is applied, shared and communicated in both the sessions and after-care service. What type of people attend? All sorts. From complete beginners to advanced trainees, the sessions are suitable for all levels. It is low impact with clients lifting weights relative to their own ability. Everyone trains as hard as the next person, regardless of current level of fitness. What tips would you have for people wanting to enjoy Christmas and stay fit and healthy? Keep moving and moderation. People focus so much on “training” they forget the simple things such as moving about and going for walks is good for your health. Regarding nutrition, you don’t need to be perfect all the time, equally, you don’t need to gorge on everything in sight just because it’s Christmas. What’s the best fitness advice you’ve been given? With Scottish Italian Awards’ Chef of the Year 2014, Chris Rouse, at the helm and well over 100 glowing reviews on Trip Advisor already (despite only opening this summer) there was a lot to live up to when local Foodie Explorers Mark and Emma popped into this new Shawlands bar/restaurant for dinner! The vibe is smart/casual with a vast array of dishes on offer, some of which are Italian and most of which are served as small plates à la Scottish tapas so you can combine ravioli, seafood and a curry in a single meal should you want to. Steak and chips comes as a typical main course size and any of the small plates can be “upgraded” to this size too.

Southside Social’s Foodie Recipe
Christmas Madelines Cinnamon spiced light sponges are ideal for a mid Christmas parcel wrapping session break with a coffee.
Ingredients •
2 eggs
•
120g flour
•
1 tsp baking powder
•
1 tsp cinnamon powder
•
2 tbsp milk
•
1 tsp vanilla extract
•
100g butter melted
•
1 1/2 tsp honey
•
60g caster sugar
Instructions 1.
Place Madeleine moulds into fridge to chill.
2.
Heat the milk, vanilla, and honey together gently until mixed together.
3.
Add eggs and sugar to a bowl and whisk together until they are frothy.
4.
Melt the butter and let cool.
5.
Add the milk mixture to the egg and sugar mix. Whisk in flour and baking powder then add cooled butter as well as the cinnamon powder.
6.
Let the mixture rest for half an hour.
7.
Pre-heat oven to 180°C/360°F/Gas 6.
8.
Bake for 10 minutes or until golden.

SHAWLANDS MAY SOON BE A BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT Shawlands Business Association has secured ÂŁ40,000 in funding from the Scottish Government and Glasgow City Council to create a Business Improvement District (BID) in Shawlands.
A BID is a business-led partnership which is managed by businesses in the area and designed to improve trading conditions in a high street or town. The process to become a business improvement district can take up to 12 months. It involves in-depth discussions with local businesses, business and consumer surveys and a detailed BID business plan and proposal.
To generate investment for the area a small levy would be charged to every business in the BID area, with the business plan detailing how this money would be spent over a five-year term. A ballot involving the business community would determine if the project is given the green light.
The proposed BID area has yet to be finalised, however it could extend to Strathbungo if agreed by the business community. For more info contact shawlandsbusinessassociation@gmail.com

IT’S WINTER TIME, BE PREPARED As we approach winter we call on local surveyor, David Ross at Allied Surveyors Scotland, to provide a few handy tips on preparing the home for winter. Roof and guttering Clear your gutters and valleys of growing weeds and leaves. To stay watertight Check roof tiles, slates and flashings for loose and damaged items. Draughty doors or windows Check seals, paint and repoint as rain and frost can damage areas of cracked pointing or bare wood. Walls Water and frost can rapidly cause damage so repair cracks to roughcast and repoint open cement joints to stone and brickwork. Boilers and gas appliances Simple, get them serviced before you really need them. Energy saving Lag that loft, but make sure that any cold water tanks and pipes in the roof are also protected. Be careful to ensure good ventilation is maintained in the roof-space.

STAY SAFE AND CHAT The Shed has launched a safety campaign, CHAT, which is created to encourage people to stay safe on nights out. The word CHAT is an acronym for a series of key safety messages and general advice on how to keep in contact with friends and get home safely on nights-out To promote CHAT, which is supported by Police Scotland, Community Safety Glasgow and Glasgow Taxis, safety cards with useful information and contact details will be issued to customers visiting the club.
