Southside Social round-up

SOUTHSIDE SOCIAL ROUND-UP Glasgow Jam Sessions, a well-established music night has taken up residency at The Shed following a 20 year stint at the now closed Sammy Dows pub. Hosted by seasoned performers Independence, the night offers musicians not just the opportunity to perform on stage, but full use of the rock band’s equipment too. Michele Pagliocca, owner of The Shed, said: “With free use of the band’s equipment and the added bonus of The Shed’s lighting and smoke machines the night really does offer musicians the chance to shine.” Shawlands Business Association has appointed a BID coordinator to develop its proposal to make the town a business improvements district. Lisa McLaughlan took up the position in December. Lisa previously owned her own business, Ollaberry in Clarkston, and was involved in Clarkston’s successful BID process. In February The Roundhouse Veterinary Hospital will move from Pollokshaws Road to Auldhouse Retail Park. The hospital offers comprehensive pet care seven days a week.

TONI DELIVERS MORE THAN AWARD WINNING PIZZAS Since arriving in September 2013 Toni’s Pizzeria has won a stack of awards including Scotland’s best pizza, best newcomer and marketing team. The go to pizza place for many (the Parma ham with rocket is to die for…), Toni’s Pizzeria offers more than award winning pizzas. From home-made soups, freshly prepared Italian breads and pastas to the more health conscious spicy chicken protein salad, owner Toni Dobrenko has a terrific understanding of his customers’ seasonal taste buds. Working with food all his life, when everyone else had a paper round Toni was making pizza, Toni’s passion for fresh produce is evident in his culinary award winning offerings.

A regular chef on STV’s daytime programme, Riverside, Toni worked in a number of Southside eateries including Bella Napoli before - to our delight - opening up his own place. Toni’s Pizzeria is open seven days, Monday to Saturday 10am to 11pm, Sunday 4pm till 11pm. Sit in, takeaway and delivery available. WE’RE LOVING…. BELL & FELIX It’s been almost two years since owners Richard Bell and Felix Haggerty opened their namesake bistro, Bell and Felix, on Shawlands’ busy Kilmarnock Road. The licensed eatery with its contemporary interiors, oozes sophistication in an unpretentious and unfussy way. If you’ve visited Bell and Felix you will no doubt be impressed with its tasty offerings and fantastic use of fresh and locally sourced ingredients. This along with the attention to detail and friendly service has made the place a growing favourite with many Southsiders. Dishes on the menu include butternut squash fritters with chilli jam, king prawn linguine, braised beef and chorizo chill and a daily “catch of the day” fish dish.

One main reason this place works so well is the owners understanding of the area and its people. Serving food and drink morning till night this gem of a place caters for all and most definitely worth a visit. Bell & Felix, 248 Kilmarnock Road, Shawlands, T: 0141 649 1684 Facebook: Bell Felix

GIZZI’S ADDS SOME PIZZAZ TO SHAWLANDS MAIN STREET It’s been a year since Café Armandos closed its doors and re-opened as Gizzi’s Espresso Bar, a stylish café which wouldn’t look out of place on a trendy London high street. Gizzi’s offers a wide choice of Italian hot and cold sandwiches, pastas, pizzas and pastries, and if it’s a coffee you’re after, we’re told they do the best in town!

2015 was a rollercoaster of a year for the family run café. Following the refurb, which has attracted a whole new younger generation of customers, Gizzi’s made the top 10 for Best Pizza and Barista in Scotland, by the Scottish Italian Awards. Sadly the family lost their beloved father, Armando, in September. A big character in the area, Armando would -we’re sure- be super proud of his family’s recent achievements. LOCAL MUM ENCOURAGES OTHERS TO BE FOREVER HAPPY Sick of working for others and having little to no flexibility? If the answer is yes then local mum of two, Tracey Dillon may have the solution. Tracey has always had big plans to work for herself and in 2014 joined Forever Living as a business owner. Since then Tracey hasn’t looked back and maintains she has never been happier.

Tracey said: “Forever Living through its products has improved the health and wellbeing of my life and many of my friends and family. From a business angle it has boosted my confidence, offered greater flexibility for both my home and professional life and to top it off it provides my family with a good income.” Forever Living may not be for everyone but a growing number of people, for one reason or another, are becoming tired of the daily grind of a conventional workforce. SOUTHSIDE SOCIAL INTRODUCES‌MS B We are delighted to welcome our home and lifestyle guru Ms B on board. Each edition she will be offering suggestions and advice on anything from baking to finance. My eight year old son has decided that he would prefer a packed lunch for school, what exciting alternatives would you suggest? Invest in a thermos flask so that you can offer a hot lunch. Heat with boiling water and fill to the top with the food. Leon Lunchbox recipe book is fantastic. Corn chowder, spicy chicken drumsticks and homemade Scotch eggs have been absolute winners with my kids. Healthy snacks I always include are rice cakes, oatcakes, homemade popcorn, seeds and dried fruit. We are both professional working parents with a good combined income, however we always run out of cash by the end of the month. Can you help with budgeting? A real useful way I have organised our family finances is to open four separate accounts. We have both salaries paid into one account and then feed from there into the other accounts. We have a food and petrol account; a Direct Debit account for mortgage, insurance, phones, utilities and packages; a savings account for holidays and presents (birthdays and Christmas). The account we pay salaries into is our cash account. Once all the other accounts have been paid into, what’s left is spending money, going out, clothes etc. If you have a home or lifestyle query for Ms B email: info@southsidesocial.co.uk Please note: Ms B offers general advice and is not a finance professional, and cannot be held liable for actions taken from reading this article.

SOUTHSIDE SOCIAL’S BUSINESS UPDATE Opened in 1999, Andiamo is one of Giffnock’s longest established restaurants. Here we catch up with its co-owner Giancarlo Celino. It’s estimated eight out of ten UK restaurants fail in the first year, what makes Andiamo a success? Being consistent in delivering good food and friendly professional service is paramount to any restaurant’s success. It’s also equally important to know and cater for your customer, you’re not going to please everyone so accept this and focus on building loyalty by providing memorable experiences for your regular customers. Has Giffnock being a Business Improvement District (BID) helped your business? Most definitely. It provides an excellent platform for local businesses to work together to plan, create and implement local events, which are successfully aimed at increasing footfall to the area.

Giancarlo along with his sister Fabia Munro own and operate Andiamo and CATCH, Fish and Chips. Andiamos, 223 Fenwick Rd, Giffnock, Glasgow, G46 6JG. 0141 620 3587 www.andiamo-restaurants.com/Giffnock FB: andiamogiffnock

BATTLEFIELD FIRM CELEBRATES 10 YEARS OF FLOORING All Floors Carpets & Flooring, an independent family run business, will celebrate 10 years in business later this year. Established in May 2006 the family firm is owned and managed by husband and wife team Richard and Mhairi Blockley. Born, raised and still living in Shawlands, Richard has over 30 years’ experience in the flooring industry and is committed to offering a competitive choice of domestic, commercial and contract flooring products and services.

“We cannot believe we’ve been here for ten years, time sure does fly.” We asked Richard if people’s buying patterns have changed much since the shop opening. “Yes, they change seasonally. At the moment we are seeing an increase in the volume of people going back to carpets, especially with this cold weather.” To keep the little people busy Richard and Mhairi recently invested in a mini arts station, which keeps kids happy while parents get the opportunity to shop. Quality Clean Carpets and upholstery

IT’S A SEASONAL THING… From coats in winter, bikini waxing in summer to eating monkey nuts in autumn our buying practices and decisions are based on the season of the moment. We popped into see Amanda Hannan, owner of Apollo Blinds, Shawlands to ask what’s seasonally popular in the world of window dressing. Amanda said: “That’s an easy one, it’s black out blind season for us. We are creatures of habit and as soon as it starts to get lighter in the mornings our orders for blinds quadruples.

“In terms of what’s fashionable we are seeing a big shift back to curtains, plain not patterned. We now stock energy efficient Duette blinds which are ever so light and really popular for bedrooms. The wooden shutter blinds will continue to be a big seller in 2016.” Apollo Blinds has been in Shawlands for 45 years and Amanda and her team have been serving Southsiders for just under 25 years. LOCAL FITNESS EXPERT SAYS DITCH THOSE SCALES How many times do you step on your scales? If once a week that is once too many according to fitness expert Patrick McVey.

Patrick, founder of The Shed Boot Camp and Personal Fitness, has witnessed first-hand how obsessive we can be about reaching our ‘ideal weight’ and is encouraging people to ditch the scales and fad diets. Patrick said: “To be healthy both mentally and physically it’s important to listen more to the body and less attention to the scales. A set of scales can’t tell if you are feeling happier, have more energy or if your clothes fit better. But your body, through regular exercise and a balanced diet can. That is not to say weight is irrelevant, but as a maker for real long term progress, I don’t believe it is the most effective long term approach.”

Patrick will soon be launching an online fitness and nutritional programme suitably named Ditch the Scales. For more details - Facebook: Patrick-McVey-Core-Fitness-Shed-Bootcamp

BIKE SCHEME ENCOURAGES DONATING NOT DUMPING Two Southside businesses have joined forces to create a bike recycling scheme. Dumpit, a Clarkston based junk and waste disposal firm and Corner Bikes, an independent bike shop in Shawlands, have teamed up to offer free bikes to local charitable groups in Glasgow’s Southside and East Renfrewshire area. The bike recycling scheme, known as Rebyke, encourages local people to donate their unwanted bikes. The bikes are then made available to local charities and community groups. Bikes for all ages are welcome and should be delivered to Corner Bikes, the scheme’s collection point. The team at Dumpit shall store and deliver the bikes to interested charities or community groups.

The scheme has been praised by local Councillor Anna Richardson. Councillor Richardson said: “This is a wonderful idea and I hope the project is a success in both areas. I’ve no doubt there are a number of people who would love their own bike and I would encourage community and youth groups to get in-touch.” To donate a bike simply drop it off at Corner Bikes, 169 Deanston Drive, Shawlands. www.dumpitscotland.co.uk and www.cornerbikes.co.uk

30 seconds with Southside Social

SOUTHSIDE SOCIAL TALKS TO.... Paul Banham is area manager for the Monteleone Group, a hospitality and leisure operator which owns a number of bars, cafés, restaurants and clubs including the Southside’s The butterfly and the pig and The Shed. Congratulations, you have just celebrated The butterfly and the pig’s first year in Shawlands. Thanks, yes it’s been a terrific year. We always knew The butterfly and the pig would do well in the Southside and had planned to come over for some time. However the timing and more importantly the location had to be right. We were over the moon when the Corona became available and couldn’t have asked for a better venue. The welcome and regular custom we have received from local people has more than exceeded our expectations. The Shed will be 20 this year. That’s some achievement, especially considering the impact on the night time economy of a recession, the smoking ban and the time restrictions on out of city venues. Yes, it’s not been the easiest 20 years, but you can’t focus on what’s out with your control. The Shed has evolved from being a nightclub to a Southside anchor venue offering many things to all people. From fitness sessions, theatre performances, in-door markets to a nightclub it’s all happening. Have we worked hard to make all this happen yes, and who knows what we’ll be in another 20 years’ time.

SPRUCE UP FOR SPRING If you are looking to sell your home then you will find this month’s catch up with local surveyor David Ross most useful.

Glasgow’s Southside is a sought after area. If your home is in good condition, you should be able to sell pretty fast. If not, the following tips may help you. Pricing - It’s important you price your home correctly, lead with your head not your heart. Seek professional advice to establish the true value of your home. Damage - It’s been an awful winter so check your home top to bottom for storm damage. Make smart improvements - Try to look at your home through the eyes of a stranger, you will quickly identify areas of improvement. Creating a blank canvas allows others to see its potential. Garden - Your garden can be a buyer’s first impression of your home, keep it tidy and clutter free. David Ross, Director at Allied Surveyors.
