SOUTHSIDE SOCIAL TALKS TO... Crawford Smith, co-founder of Southside Fringe. The Southside Fringe is in its 4th year. With a total of 190 events over 16 days (May 13-29) this will be its biggest festival so far. Tell us a little bit about Southside Fringe and what can local people expect? We’re a community organised venue based arts and culture festival. This year Southsiders can expect a wide range of live music, cabaret, spoken word, theatre, comedy, club nights, street theatre and visual art, with a few surprises along the way! Where are the events being held? We’ll be hosting events in 52 venues all over the Southside. Notable additions for 2016 include legendary live music venue The Clutha Vaults, House for an Art Lover and Pollok House. What’s special about the Southside Fringe? We are a terrific platform for local artists looking to get recognised or showcase new material. Full details of all events can be found at southsidefringe.org.uk. This year’s fringe ticket shop is located at the front of the Shawlands Shopping Centre (Kilmarnock Road). For all enquiries email: info@southsidefringe.org.uk.

LOCAL BAR SCORES A HAT TRICK FOR ENTERTAINMENT, DRINK AND FOOD Taking pride of place on the corner of Pollokshaws Road and Moss Side Road it’s hard to miss the striking building that is Linen 1906. Inside the bar, which started life as a bank in (you guessed it) 1906, it’s just as impressive. With many of its original features still intact it manages to mix the old and new flawlessly. Showing almost all sporting events, if you like sports you’ll no-doubt enjoy Linen 1906. Its carefully placed screens provide the perfect location to relax and enjoy your game of choice.
Live music keeps locals entertained Friday to Sunday evening, while a well-stocked bar offering over 40 crafts beers including Sagres, Sharps’ Cornish Pilsners and a full range of IPA keeps them watered. More gastro than traditional the food at Linen 1906 is pretty darn tasty to say the least. With freshly prepared dishes such as panko crusted king prawn and salmon fishcakes, spicy Mexican shredded pork tacos and crispy teriyaki tofu and noodles we’re confident you will be more than impressed. SOUTHSIDERS SPICE IT UP THANKS TO NEW SUPERMARKET Walking into Shawlands Continental you are welcomed by smiley faces and a fabulous burst of colour. Previously Global Videos, the store is located on Moss-Side Street (across and up from Shawlands Academy). Owned by local brothers, Adnan and Tariq Akram, the spacious continental supermarket, which opened late last year, stocks an exciting range of products. Its shelves and fridges are neatly filled with spices, pulses, continental and traditional fresh fruit and vegetables to a wonderful selection of handmade savoury pastries. Marinated meats and fish, prepared in partnership with The Village Curry House, are ready for the oven or BBQ.
A well-stocked frozen section which includes a range of exotic vegetables such as okra and molokhia make it easy to cook authentic Asian or the ever popular “clean eating” dishes anytime. A Crollas ice-cream corner, serving milkshakes and sweet delights will prove popular in the sunnier months. FOODIE EXPLORERS CHECK OUT… Despite the name Café Strangebrew, this place isn’t strange at all, in fact it’s rather lovely. The stressful part of the visit is getting a seat, it’s chokka full all the time, and then deciding what to have. The menu sounds delicious and when you see the food come out you know it’s lived up to expectations! On our visit a pot of builder’s tea and a London fog was ordered. London fog is Earl Grey tea served in hot milk, like an Earl Grey latte. For food, the baked eggs, smoked salmon cream, cheddar and toast swung it for me. Three eggs baked with a creamy cheddar and salmon sauce. It was salty, but in that oh-my-gawd, this is amazingly moreish, I must dip some toast into this! For Mr Foodie the poached egg, smashed avocado, toasted sourdough with bacon and chilli hollandaise was ordered – it was heavenly. Fresh bread, creamy avocado and a perfectly-cooked gooey egg with hollandaise that had a slight kick and put a smile on his face!
The service is friendly and the venue cozy. So set your alarms for an early breakfast to grab a seat at the best new place for breakfast/brunch south of the Clyde. Café Strangebrew, 1109 Pollokshaws Road, Shawlands 0141 237 4321 Facebook Cafestrangebrew

SOUTHSIDE SOCIAL CATCHS UP WITH… Mimmo Sorrento, general manager at The butterfly and the pig, Shawlands You recently took up the position of general manager, how’s it going? Really well. I was general manager at our Bath St venue so it’s nice to spend some time south of the river, especially as I live in the Southside. What’s the difference between both venues? Both places are very similar in lots of ways, the shabby chic interior and our commitment to providing a relaxed, welcoming spot for customers to catch up with friends for a drink, bite to eat or to be entertained. The big difference is here in Shawlands you are operating in a town. This allows you to be more involved with the local community, which is great. What exciting things have you lined up? In March we had a really successful comedy night, which we may introduce again later in the year. We will soon be launching a darts tournament which we will be on a Monday evening. Aimed at all levels we expect it to be a good night. The butterfly and the pig, Shawlands 1039 Pollokshaws Road, Shawlands 0141 632 6230 Facebook The butterfly and the pig south

ASK THE TRAINER... WEIGHT LOSS Our health and fitness expert Patrick McVey, founder of The Shed Bootcamp, answers a burning question on all our lips. How do you reduce “calories” without weighing food or counting calories? Food is used as energy by the body. If it’s not used, it will be stored as fat. Energy is given a unit of measurement and applied to all food. If you are eating consistently well and getting plenty of protein and vegetables and think you are “stuck” in a plateau, it is nearly always a case that you simply need to eat less. All this means is cut out the rubbish and then, reduce portion sizes at meals. Stay clear of fad diets they only ever work in the short term and can distort your attitude towards food. If you have a health or fitness query for Patrick email info@southsidesocial.co.uk. The Shed Bootcamp runs over 12 and 16 consecutive weeks, with sessions available weekdays and evenings plus Saturday and Sunday mornings. Week day sessions offer a free childcare facility.
COMING SOON: Patrick will soon be launching an online health and fitness programme, Ditch the Scales. www.ditchthescales.co.uk
