SOUTHSIDE SOCIAL ROUND-UP Congratulations to The Shed on securing a permanent 3am license on Friday and Saturday nights. The move brings the Southside into line with operating hours enjoyed by venues in the city centre and parts of the west end. We hope it has a positive impact on neighbouring cafés, bars and restaurants, boosting the night time economy. In June we welcome Pazzo Glasgow to Shawlands. The Italian café and takeaway, owned by Black Doves’ Chris Rouse, will be offering a wide selection of Italian dishes including antipasti, pizza and pasta. With a drinks license delivery service, and the talented Chris at the helm, we expect great things from this place! Artwork designed by local artist Stephen O’Neil has been chosen to represent Shawlands’ BID campaign. Stephen O’Neil said: “I’m really pleased my artwork has been chosen to represent My Shawlands. I have lived in the area for the past 17 years and feel the image of the town cross, a point where most Southsiders walk and drive through on a daily basis, signifies the heart of Shawlands.” The image shall be used on all My Shawlands communication including website, leaflets, posters and banners.

THE WORLD LOOKS BRIGHTER AND FRESHER AT WHALE OF A TIME Under new ownership a Southside soft play centre has undergone a huge makeover. Whale of a Time, directly across from Shawlands Primary, is now owned by husband and wife team Sarah and Allan Davidson. Together the hands-on couple have over 35 years’ experience in venue and catering management. Since taking over in September last year, the couple have delivered an extensive refurbishment programme. This involved all play frames being re-netted and padding recovered or replaced, new play mats and the addition of 10,000 balls for the venue’s massive ball pit areas. Other upgrades include the soft play centre being fully decorated, replacing all carpets, LED lighting, and a new and improved dining and seating area. A new menu, team training and party packages compliment the refurbishment.
Sarah said: “We are thrilled with the makeover. It captures our commitment to maintaining a clean, bright and safe environment for all our little customers. Our team now have a centre they are very proud off.” Whale of a Time, 1273 Pollokshaws Road, Shawlands, 0141 649 5455 Facebook whaleofatime1

GREEN FINGERED RESIDENTS KEEP IT LOCAL Toni’s Pizzeria is promoting home-grown ingredients by using fruit and vegetables produced by green-fingered locals. From back gardens to allotments the Giffnock pizzeria is committed to using local produce in a range of it dishes. This includes a dedicated ‘keep it local’ pizza, with twenty per cent of the proceeds going to local greenspace charity Urban Roots, a community-led environmental and health improvement organisation.
The Keep it Local campaign was cooked up to highlight the importance of using local, seasonal food for health and the environment. Local contributors will be paid for any produce used by owner Toni Dobrenko and his team. Toni Dobrenko said: ‘I love the idea of fresh, tasty produce being grown on our doorsteps, and would encourage all green fingered locals who would like to see their produce on our menu to get in-touch.”

FAMILY CAFÉ TOASTS SUCCESS OF NEW DRINKS MENU The owners of Gizzi’s Espresso Bar are bubbling with delight after successfully securing an alcohol license for its busy café on Kilmarnock Road. The new drinks license means diners can now enjoy a glass of wine or ice cold beer when visiting the Italian eatery.
Owner of Gizzi’s Espresso Bar, Maria Wylie said: “Since the refurb a lot of customers, especially new ones, assumed we had a drinks license so it felt only natural to apply for one and we’re delighted to have it granted.” The drinks menu, which includes a wide selection of wine and beers, have been carefully selected to complement Gizzi’s Italian inspired menu. At this time Gizzi’s is only opened during the day, however Maria added: “We have toyed with the idea of opening in the evenings and may consider it for the future.” Earlier in the year Gizzi’s Espresso Bar made the top 10 for Best Pizza and Barista in Scotland, by the Scottish Italian Awards. ITS ALL GO AT A POPULAR SHAWLANDS GIFTSHOP betty beans turned one in April. In this time the busy Shawlands shop has become the go to place for many Southsiders on the lookout for hand-made cards and unusual gifts or trinkets. Owned by local sisters Debora Giusti and Pamela Martinolli, betty beans is named after a beloved beanie doll from the owners’ childhood.
Debora said: “We can’t believe we’re one already. It’s been a quick year and we would like to thank all our customers for getting betty beans’ first year off to such a flying start.” Despite being full to the brim with fabulous gifts and quirky homeware, the shop is bright and airy with gorgeous seasonal displays dotted all around. End of term and Fathers’ Day displays showcase a wonderful selection of gifts and special knick-knacks including scented candles, scarves, fun stationery, mugs and keyrings, toiletries, and quirky gadgets.
betty beans takes pride of place in the shop – look out for her the next time you visit. betty beans, 168 Kilmarnock road, Shawlands, 0141 632 7858 Facebook bettybeansuk

SUMMER IN BIKE WORLD The summer is one of the busiest times for cyclists. With many families deciding to get on their bikes (Southside Social included) over the sunnier months, we ask Stephen Steele, owner of Corner Bikes, for some advice on family biking. Stephen said: “From my 18 years’ experience when kids in a family are able to cycle independently, mum or dad usually decide it’s time for all the family to get bikes. It’s a great idea, which not only keeps everyone active, it’s a terrific way for families to spend quality time together.” How much does an adult bike cost? An adult bike can cost anywhere from £130 to £10,000, whatever your budget there’s a bike to suit. Do you assemble the bikes? Yes, I assemble all new bikes and offer a six week check. Tell us three simple tips for new cyclists? Always wear a helmet, may seem an obvious one but you’d be surprised. Inflate your tyres using a good floor pump and check your saddle height. Finally, make sure your bike has been checked by a competent cycling mechanic. For all biking queries pop into Corner Bikes. SOUTHSIDE DUO SET TO TAKE ON THE WORLD Two words spring to mind on meeting Platinum owners, cousins Adele Coll and Claire Reilly. Refreshing and inspirational. With a dream of working for themselves, the pair’s first venture was buying and refurbishing a flat for re-sale. It earned them some cash, they worked well together, so they decided to do another. Three years on, and with amazing entrepreneurial spirit, and the support of family and close friends, their idea of becoming the next Sarah Beeny has developed into so much more. Platinum is now a successful business focused on three areas, Platinum Property Services, Platinum All Trades and Platinum Home Care.
Claire said: “Each section of our business has developed from an opportunity and our need for particular services.” Employing 17 local people the savvy business women, who up until February were working from Adele’s dining table, recently purchased the old Strathclyde Police Federation offices, a magnificent building on Merrylee Road. With an amazing can-do attitude and a dedicated and respected team this is most certainly a rising star of a company. DINERS EAT THEIR WAY ROUND EUROPE In celebration of the UEFA Euro 2016, Linen 1906 will be adding a football twist to its summer menu. The popular sports bar will be adapting its menu to include a range of European inspired dishes associated with the countries playing in the league.
Chef Graeme Wilson, said: “We hope our customers enjoy our football themed menu. It’s a great way to showcase some iconic and much loved European dishes, and who knows if popular we may introduce a few permanently.” From hand-made tapas, lamb koftas to pasta with meatballs it’s all being served up for diners. A selection of Camden Town Brewery beers and ales gives a nod to our English counterparts. Even though Scotland didn’t qualify, Graham added: “We will be using some fantastic Scottish ingredients and who knows maybe the odd bit of haggis may show up on the menu.”
With large screens located throughout, Linen 1906 is the perfect spot to enjoy the football. Booking for food and drink recommended during the tournament. Linen 1906, 1100 Pollokshaws Road, Shawlands 0141 649 3815, Facebook Linen1906

FOODIE EXPLORERS CHECK OUT... We’ve visited Bell & Felix a number of times for breakfast and lunch since opening two years ago but we had never made it for dinner until now. The tasting boards caught our eye, usually we have to “discuss” (argue) about who wants what but at Bell & Felix there are individual boards so one each. Each board was packed with delights such as the fish board, hot smoked salmon pâté, haddock goujon and more. The veggie board had plump mushroom Arancini and crisp polenta chips plus squeaky halloumi cheese.
The home-made pizza was “delish”. BBQ rib topped pizza, spicy and tangy rib meat with jalapeños - Mrs Foodie soon grabbed a slice, just to check of course. A rare cooked flat iron steak with chimichurri, confit tomatoes and field mushrooms served with chips. You have to get the chips they were made for scooping the piquant chimichurri sauce. Mrs Foodie loved the sweet confit tomatoes, especially on top of a piece of steak and chimichurri sauce. After these two courses we were stuffed and had no room for pudding. We had a wee peek at the dessert menu just to annoy ourselves, and decided that perhaps there was just enough room for a cheeky cocktail each (seemingly 1/2 price Tuesday - Thursday!). A French and an Espresso Martini, which had a good caffeine kick to it. ASK THE TRAINER… NUTRITION AND PROTEIN What can I do to resist the urge to eat less chocolate and treats? Resisting food is dieting and doesn’t work. You need to start listening to your body and instead of resisting, ask why you want it, and why you are hungry. And this is where protein comes in.
A high protein diet has numerous benefits, one in particular is it blunts the hormones which signals hunger. I always advise clients to think carefully about what they consume and to stop focusing on being good (I will avoid chocolate today). Instead if you’re struggling with cravings you need to be consuming more protein at meal times. Higher protein diets also help retain muscle tissue while losing fat.
Good sources of protein include chicken, pork, fish and seafood, yogurt, eggs, spinach, avocado, raspberries and bananas. Patrick McVey is founder of Core Fitness Shed Bootcamp and Personal Training. The bootcamp runs 12 and 16 consecutive weeks, with various sessions available weekdays and evenings plus Saturday and Sunday mornings. Week day sessions offer a free childcare facility. MISS B’S SUMMER RECIPE A beautiful simple healthy filling salad for the summer months. Packed full of heart healthy good fats and filling protein. This is a brilliant supper to keep you full until breakfast.
Salmon, broccoli and avocado salad Serves 4
Ingredients 4 x salmon fillets 2 x heads of broccoli 3 x ripe avocados Large handful coriander Dressing Juice of 3 limes 2 x tsps of soya sauce 2 x tbsp light tahini 3 x tbsp extra virgin olive oil 2 x tsps honey or maple syrup Sprinkling of salt Preparation Slice the broccoli into bite sized pieces. Steam for seven minutes. You want them still a little crunchy. Refresh under cold water and drain. Peel and slice the avocados into small cubes. Finely chop the coriander. Season the salmon fillets and either grill or pan fry in a tablespoon of rapeseed oil until just cooked in the middle. Should be slightly pink in the middle. Use a knife to gently open up and check. For the dressing Squeeze the limes into an empty jam jar or container with a lid. Add the tahini, soya sauce, olive oil, honey or maple syrup and salt. Shake well. Put all the salad ingredients into a large bowl and drizzle dressing over the salad. Mix well. Serve with the salmon fillet on top. Delicious!
