a new look on the horizon.

The new critical care wing, often referred to as the “Hilton Hotel” of hospitals, is a prominent addition to La Mesa’s skyline. As light plays on the dramatic, sun-shading forms, the building changes and catches your eye. The contemporary exterior is emblematic of the emergency and critical care housed within. The new structure updates the hospital’s regional vocabulary of sunshades and light colors with San Diego blue-green accents, giving the hospital new presence in this increasingly urban community.

The new Emergency and Critical Care Tower is a prominent addition to La Mesa’s skyline. Resting atop a terraced hillside and visible from several surrounding major highways, the new building is a beacon which announces the Hospital’s presence in the community.

The addition replaces functions in the existing facility, provides space for new services, as well as meets seismic requirements. All treatment and inpatient rooms are zoned for patient, doctor, nurse, and family areas.

Awarded the “2006 ICU Design Citation by the Society of Critical Care Medicine: The ICU Design Citation honors critical care units that combine functional ICU design with the humanitarian delivery of critical care. The award is sponsored by the Society of Critical Care Medicine, the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses and the American Institute of Architects.

a sanctuary within.

Earlier designs created a hospital surrounded by a garden. With this expansion, the design team created a garden within the hospital. The central courtyard forms a heart filled with soft light that orients and refreshes, not the windowless core that typifies many hospital structures. A place with no set program, the courtyard has accommodated activities ranging from coffee breaks to consultations, from grieving the ill, to celebrating a wedding.

As visitors and patients reach the fourth and fifth floors, they are greeted by calming views from the elevator lobby views that celebrate La Mesa’s brilliant blues of day and soothing plums of night

Two floors of state of-the-art acute care nursing top the new addition at Grossmont Hospital. Each floor has 33 beds in approximately 25,000sf of space. These nursing units are designed for the latest technology such as telemetry and computerized decentralized charting and order/entry systems. A special step down unit has been designed for each floor enabling a variety of care levels, which can respond to the great variety of patients needs. The private patient rooms are large with approximately 230sf of free area each. The headwall in each patient room is uniquely designed to move the bed away from the wall and create space for equipment such as ventilators. Nursing stations have separated medication rooms to assist in avoiding medication errors. Staff support spaces such as a lounge and lockers are located on the unit.

BEHIND THE SCENES

Mechanical Equipment serving the new tower is located in the Basement and at the top story Mechanical Floor. For the most part, ductwork and utility runs were pushed to the perimeter of the floor plate to facilitate future remodels. Round exterior duct enclosures conceal ductwork located outside the footprint of the building. This ductwork provides ventilation for the ground floor Emergency Department and Levels 1 & 2. A new utility tunnel connects the building to the existing Central Utility Plant.
