Work of Art Taking tones from canvas to compact with Vapour.

CO-FOUNDERS KRYSIA BOINIS AND KRISTINE KEHELEY

F

or more than 10 years, renegade beauty pioneers Krysia Boinis and Kristine Keheley have been at the forefront of natural formulation, bridging the gap between luxurious conventional cosmetics and clean color that doesn’t compromise. As of September, the beloved brand revealed a major makeover with sleek new packaging, updated shades, and an array of innovative product launches. The founders are thrilled with the latest phase, saying, “It’s rare to get an opportunity to re-envision a project so thoroughly and on such a high level. We are different people than when we started Vapour, so our vision is now driven by our experience and our dreams for the future. We’ve never wavered from the mission of creating the best and purest products. Vapour now has the opportunity to amplify and emerge as an even stronger voice.” Years ago, when Krysia and Kristine designed and manufactured natural skincare for major brands, they discovered a mutual love for makeup. But the more they learned about the potentially toxic ingredients in their favorite products, the less they could enjoy them. Unfortunately, the rich colors and lasting wear they admired in conventional makeup were nonexistent in green beauty. With no good options, the duo decided to make their own, combining Krysia’s formulating know-how with Kristine’s background in fine arts to create Vapour. The brand gets its name from the merging of their selfproclaimed “wildly different characters.” Vapour is defined as water molecules dispersed in air—with Krysia being the cardinal water sign, Cancer, and Kristine being the cardinal air sign, Libra. As they found out, when these elements come together with a singular focus, alchemy happens. With strong ties to their home of Taos, New Mexico, they consider the city their muse: “Vapour embodies a powerful yet understated strength and wild beauty. Being at one with nature and finding serenity in the landscape of Taos deeply influences the brand. Taos is open-minded and experimental. For generations, lured by the magical light, visionary artists have been attracted to this high desert valley. We interact with the beauty of this place every day and night, and Vapour products capture this, bringing softly illuminating color onto the planes and contours of the face.”

Often lauded as the Fenty of green beauty, Vapour is known for its exceptional shade options, nuanced undertones, and velvety textures. We asked Kristine if her artistic skills play a part in creating complexion products, to which she replies, “Absolutely. My eye has been trained for color and light since early childhood. I regard these as my first languages. Discerning subtle variations in tone, being able to mathematically deconstruct a color, and knowing how to orchestrate pigments all come from my artistic background. With cosmetic color, it’s crucial to understand that makeup should not be an opaque paint that sits on top of the skin. Nuance and light reflection are key to a great complexion. I’m always balancing tones with consideration for the life and blood flow underneath the skin. I want to create products that illuminate the wearer.” Formulating with plant-based ingredients can prove challenging, but Vapour takes it in stride. Krysia explains, “Ingredient purity and outstanding performance are essential. That’s why we choose organically farmed and naturally derived, minimally processed ingredients. We look to plants that support health, beauty, and well-being with naturally occurring actives such as antioxidants, EFAs (essential fatty acids), vitamins, and minerals. Our clean ingredients meet or exceed international green beauty standards, are responsibly sourced, and have the best environmental ratings.” The proof is in the pudding, because when it comes to makeup, results are key. “At the end of the day,” Krysia says, “our cosmetics must have sublime performance to earn their place on your face. Vapour does just that, and is a luxurious alternative to conventional makeup. There is no need to compromise on texture, comfort, longevity, or color payoff. Our versatile colors and finishes, silky lightweight textures, and inclusive complexion range set the new cosmetic standard.”

Good Hair Day

Love your hair, love yourself

with co-founder Joanne Starkman of Innersense Organic Beauty

A

good hair day can make us feel like our minds, bodies, and souls are invincible. As a hairstylist, I have a unique perspective on hair, moods, and well-being. In my experience, they are very much connected. When my husband, Greg, and I created Innersense Organic Beauty, our intention was to develop an organic hair care line with the purest of ingredients and a message of self-love. When you take time to celebrate yourself with one of our hair ceremonies, whether it be to detox your hair, nourish your curls, or even boost body, you are deepening the connection with your hair, and thus with yourself!

The Oil Detox Hair Ceremony This is one of our signature hair ceremonies. It stimulates health and vitality while adding mindful self-care to your morning. This practice gently and effectively cleanses buildup from the scalp and replenishes hair with nourishment. Take a deep breath to become connected and centered while being present with the innerflection inscribed on the Harmonic Healing Oil ($26): “I am nourished with the healing power of self-love.” Section damp hair, emulsify one to two pumps of oil in your hands, and apply from roots to ends. Add more oil as needed to coat each strand. As you massage the oil into the hair, you will feel cuticles softening and surface buildup dissipating.

Step 1: Oil

Step 2: Massage

Beginning at the hairline, place your fingertips firmly on the scalp and massage in small circular motions with medium pressure. Continue for a slow count of five to stimulate blood flow. Slide your fingertips back to the crown of the head and repeat. Keeping your thumbs near the crown, move your fingertips to the sides of the head, behind the ears. Place your pinky fingers near the base of the hairline at the occipital bone and repeat. Firmly place one hand on top of the head while placing the other at the base of the hairline cradling the occipital bone, and repeat. Place all fingertips at the nape of the neck. Use a sliding motion to move the scalp in an upward direction and repeat. Conclude by placing your hands in one of the previous positions for a slow count of five.

Add warm water to the hair, emulsify one to two pumps of Pure Harmony Hairbath ($28) in wet hands, and apply from scalp to ends. Let it sit for three to five minutes before rinsing thoroughly. Shampoo again (you’ll get more lather this time) and rinse thoroughly.

Step 3: Cleanse

Step 4: Condition

The final step is conditioning your freshly detoxed hair. Hydrating Hair Masque ($30) is a beautiful post-detox treatment if you feel your hair needs moisture and strength. If you have fine to medium hair, or texture that tangles easy, choose Color Radiance Daily Conditioner ($30). Emulsify a dime- to nickel-sized amount and apply from mid-length to ends. Allow to sit five to 10 minutes before rinsing. Your hair will be renewed and ready for any style! 10

The Beauty of Bathing

T

here’s something undeniably therapeutic about baths. The shower is all about getting things done, while the bath embraces the art of doing nothing—and with the breakneck pace of today’s world, taking time to unplug and just be is more important than ever. People have been elevating the simple soak throughout history with various enhancements. Cleopatra was famous for bathing in donkey’s milk to preserve her beauty, while Marie Antoinette turned to her personal perfumer to make sachets filled with sweet almonds, pine nuts, marshmallow root, and lily bulbs. Whether you’re looking to soften your skin, melt away muscle pain, or just savor a moment of self-care, try turning off your phone and slipping into the tub.

Comfort $35 I goop Nurse! Under the weather? Mustard, manuka, and eucalyptus join forces in this comforting golden bath powder that clears senses and fades fatigue.

Soothe $29 I Osmia Organics Soothing Tea Bath Steep your way to softer skin with an oversized muslin tea bag brimming with epsom salts, oats, and a bouquet of rose, calendula, and chamomile blooms.

Rejuvenate $52 I Olverum Bath Oil Just half a capful of this concentrated elixir transforms your tub into a spa with an uplifting blend of Siberian fir, juniper, and geranium essential oils.

Recover $34 I Pursoma After The Class Work hard, relax hard. Magnesium chloride and sea salt ease muscle and joint tension, plus a surprise intention stone in each bag balances energy.

Nourish $8.95 I Bathorium Ancient Oat Hydration Crush Indulge dry skin with a mellow, milky bath that combines nurturing rice, warm vanilla, and lemongrass for a hydrating, luscious lather.

Tea Time: A slow beauty ritual with Shel Pink of SPARITUAL I

founded SPARITUAL in 2004, inspired by my desire to start a conversation about a healthier approach to beauty in an industry dominated by quick fixes, instant results, and unrealistic beauty standards. We are a sustainable, vegan beauty brand based on the rituals of self-care. We believe slowing down to return home to yourself through purposeful and meaningful self-care practices for the mind, body, and soul is the path to enlightenment. We pay so much attention to the products we put on our face; we now need to shift our focus to care for our bodies in deep and meaningful ways. By using products that contain the healthiest ingredients, we nurture our skin, elevate our spirit, and incorporate daily intentional touch through tactile rituals that help alleviate the stagnation and stress we hold in our bodies.

The Earl Grey collection features three therapeutic body care products formulated with ancient healing ingredients designed to calm the senses and deliver a healthy glow.

1

Exfoliate with Earl Grey Body Polish, $44

Coconut sugar and activated charcoal are blended with jojoba and sunflower oils to hydrate, purify, and polish, revealing fresh, smooth skin beneath. While showering, rub a quarter-sized amount between your hands to activate the scent. Massage in a circular motion on your feet, legs, arms, shoulders, and torso. Rinse. Indulge in this ritual and reflect on a sense of renewal.

2

Hydrate with Earl Grey Body Creme, $45

Formulated with aloe, jojoba oil, shea butter, and tamarind seed, this antioxidant-rich creme provides continuous hydration, and promotes skin elasticity, smoothing, and softening for slow-aging benefits After showering, rub a quarter-sized dollop between your palms and inhale the comforting Earl Grey aroma. Apply using short, upward strokes starting at your feet, working up the legs, then from the hands to the arms and shoulders. Massage on your torso toward the heart. Indulge in this ritual and be compassionate toward yourself.

3

Massage with Earl Grey Body Salve, $46

This salve is created with carnauba wax, cocoa butter, and jojoba oil to help skin retain moisture and softness. The rich treatment melts into skin to deeply hydrate and moisturize. Prior to bedtime, take a bath or rinse off in the shower to remove any residue from the day. Warm the salve between your hands, then massage into skin using long strokes, paying extra attention to joints. Allow the body salve to absorb, nourishing the skin. Indulge in this bedtime ritual and reflect on self-love.

Behind the Bottle Finding formulas that work with Fitglow

I

thedetoxmarket.com

F

itglow founder Anna Domi turned a personal setback into a burgeoning beauty business. A lifelong health and fitness fanatic, Anna was happily working in the corporate world when she suffered a car accident that brought her active lifestyle to a grinding halt. Left struggling to overcome injuries and physical challenges, she was unable to return to her job. With plenty of free time, and a serious need for distraction, she turned to solving a nagging issue—her skin. “I have crazy reactive, rosacea-prone skin with sun damage from years of running outside,” Anna shares. “I spent so long trying to find something that would treat my skin damage without irritating my rosacea. I felt very defeated. The more mainstream products would work a bit, but their ingredients were questionable. And when I turned to natural products, especially ones with essential oils, they would aggravate my rosacea.” As the saying goes, necessity is the mother of invention. “I became a little—actually, very—obsessed with learning how the skin works. I made products for me and a few close friends to help with our skin issues. I never intended to start a brand or be in the beauty industry. I just wanted to help people.” With only a few products under her belt, Anna opened a stall at a local farmers’ market. “One of the best things about this experience was that I could see Fitglow customers’ skin improve week after week, and I could focus my product development on their needs. All Fitglow products in the lineup, even today, started because I wanted to help real people with actual skin issues. I never look to trends, but rather dig deep into research so I can create formulas that are effective.” Fitglow has evolved from a passion project into an innovative range of high-performance skincare and makeup with a major following. Fitglow formulas feel, in a word, advanced. Sleek airless pumps house pillowy creams, lightweight lotions, and silky serums that are packed with plant actives. And while the line is built on skincare, the Vita-Active Foundation ($55), brimming with brightening botanicals, and the Lip Color Serum ($42), a plumping potion meets gorgeous gloss, get a lot of love from die-hard fans. Anna tells us, “We use evidence-based plant ingredients to treat the skin 24 hours a day. First we nourish with a skincare routine, then improve the performance by adding our treatment-based makeup. It’s a comprehensive approach to taking care of your skin.” With a hit on her hands, plus three rescue dogs, Anna was already busy—and then came motherhood. “I had my son 18 months ago, and everything changed. Trying to balance being a business owner and a mom is a struggle some days, but it’s definitely worth it. I look at the world in a new way now, and want to ensure that my son has a great future. He even inspired us to take further steps to improve our environmental impact with more refillable and sustainable packaging.” Ten years into making skincare, we asked Anna if her mission has changed since her farmers’ market days. “My goal is still very much the same,” she says. “I want to help people love their skin and continue to develop plant-based products that work.”

Beauty Your Way

A better palette for a better planet with The Organic Skin Co.

W

hen it comes to sustainable beauty, The Organic Skin Co. is leading the way: refillable bamboo palettes, organic ingredients sourced from community farms in India, and their One Product, One Tree initiative with Eden Reforestation Projects resulting in the planting of over 100,000 trees in forests around the globe. The most impressive part? The products are gorgeous. We went straight to founder Megan Douglas to glean insight into how the stylish vegan range maintains pro-level performance while staying committed to thoughtful, planet-friendly formulations. Although her family has a background in natural health spanning five generations, Megan took her own journey before following in their footsteps. She spent her late teens and twenties modeling in Japan before moving to London to design her own high-end clothing label, which ultimately graced the pages of Vogue and Marie Claire and hung in the windows at Harrod’s. Despite the accolades and success, Megan didn’t feel connected to the fashion business. After a soul-searching stint in India, she headed home to reconnect with her true passion, holistic health and well-being. “I went back to New Zealand, where I spent time training as a naturopath and herbalist,” shares Megan. “In my work, I was shocked by the amount of women visiting me with skin problems, most of them caused by environmental stressors and toxins. And as a mother, I was concerned that my daughter had almost no natural makeup to choose from. Try as I might, I couldn’t find anything on the market that did its job and cared for skin at the same time—so I decided to do something about it!” The Organic Skin Co.’s unique system of pods and palettes allows for complete customization. Megan explains, “Using the system, people get to choose from a wide range of products and colors, rather than having to settle for a palette that contains one kind of product in prescribed shades. We want our customers to be able to choose their own looks.”

Another differentiator? Each formula is infused with supercritical extracts like calendula, turmeric, and pomegranate. “Unlike conventional extraction techniques, which use either high temperatures or chemical solvents to extract a plant’s nutrients, we use supercritical extraction,” says Megan. “It’s a method that allows us to capture the maximum nutritional and beauty benefits of the plant, making them more whole, more pure, and between 50 to 250 times more concentrated than conventional extracts.” The family-run business formulates in-house, and has ambitious plans for more sustainably minded launches in the coming year. “People everywhere are becoming more and more conscious of their well-being and the potential harm synthetic toxins can have on their skin, as well as our planet. At the same time, they don’t want to compromise on their looks. It’s our aim to make sure they don’t have to.”

Hide and Seek Concealer Pod, $21 Creamy, concentrated coverage with a flawless finish. Cheeky Lips Pod, $21 Vivid pigment for a flattering flush and a pretty pout. In the Spotlight Highlighter Pod, $21 A dewy sheen in two shades to enhance any skin tone. The Eyes Have It Pod, $21 Long-wearing cream shadows glide on and stay put.

FEED YOUR BEAUTY Where superfood meets science with Graydon

F

or Graydon Moffat, founder of Canadian brand Graydon Skincare, beauty and food have always gone hand-in-hand—literally. “I was the kid who would concoct my own face masks and apply them to any willing victim,” she recalls. Fueled by her fascination with the alchemy of food, Graydon started her career in the culinary arts before moving to Southern California. “After battling an eating disorder, it was in Santa Monica that I deeply connected with the wellness world,” says Graydon. “I was using a lot of superfoods in my work as a chef and started to make superfood-infused skincare masks. I had an ‘aha’ moment, and realized the topical use and bioavailability of superfoods on the skin is really impactful.” The range harnesses the power of science and the wisdom of nature, incorporating nutrient-rich botanicals and clinically proven superfood actives to support and nourish skin. “Our entire brand is based on providing the most efficacious plant-powered ingredients we can find,” Graydon says. “Your skin gets hungry, and you need to feed it good food. That’s one of the main reasons why we geek out so hard on sourcing amazing ingredients.”

When cold nights have you craving hot chocolate, Moon Juice Cosmic Cocoa ($30) is the (adaptogenic) answer—creamy heirloom cacao and coconut sugar melt with reishi and maca in each cozy cup. Ayurvedic wisdom credits oil pulling with drawing impurities from the mouth before they can spread to the body; immune-boosting or not, we love the way Keeko Morning Mint Oil Pulling Sachets ($29) whiten our smiles and banish bad breath. Indie Lee Superfruit Facial Cream ($105) delivers the daily dose of vitamin C your skin needs. With plumping hyaluronic acid, plant peptides, and glow-boosting AHAs, you’ll look as radiant as you feel.
