The Dharma Door is globally recognised as a brand that has been making a tangible difference through design since 2004. An original thinker among lifestyle brands, our team continues to develop an actionable Fair Trade philosophy, connecting with talented artisans across continents. We combine contemporary design, lasting functionality and unfailing ethics to create products that tell a much bigger story than just the item itself. A story woven with every stitch and fibre. We believe that design can make a real difference

in the world – that’s why The Dharma Door subscribes to an unconventional design process that puts our maker’s first. We begin by getting to know our artisan partners by observing the traditional skills being practiced in their communities and always choose locally grown raw materials. These materials form the foundation of the natural and textural style that is synonymous with our brand. The Dharma Door creates fair and sustainable work for artisans by ensuring our collections are timeless, functional and aesthetically beautiful.

Natural Dyeing Natural dyeing is an important part of both our design aesthetic and sustainable committment. We partner with artisans who are specialists in the art of natural dyeing - you will find their skills in the charcoal, indigo, browns and golds across our range.

The Dharma Door products are hand-dyed and hand-woven in rural villages in Bangladesh. Post-dyeing cleanup is done in the village waterways - the same water that is used for washing clothes, fishing, food preparation and playing. We’re conscious of this. Our mission is for our products to have a wholly positive effect on the artisans and their communities. This is why natural dyeing makes perfect sense to us.

Our artisan partners are proud to be creating products that are globally recognised for their impeccable handmade qualities.

Ruma carefully prepares cotton for dyeing and weaving into our collections.

The epitome of slow, unhurried production, these beautiful throws have been carefully crafted by the hands of master weavers in the desert region of Kutch, India. True to the Khadi process, the wool is hand-clipped and the cotton is hand-picked; the fibres are handspun and handwoven with selvedge edges and the tassels on each piece are finished by hand. ABOVE

Education One of the key benefits of our Fair Trade partnerships is enabling the artisans the opportunity to educate their children. Reshaping their future.

“One of my favourite things about the artisan groups that we work with is their self-managed Savings & Loan Schemes. Each artisan group forms a committee, and each committee is given a money box with two keys, which are held by a democratically elected leader and co-leader. Every month, they meet and put 5% of their earnings in the box. During this meeting, the women are given the opportunity to present a loan request if needed. This might be for a new roof on their house, a toilet, an animal to provide food, books for their children, clothing or a medical procedure for a family member. There can only be one recipient each time and she is chosen according to the greatest need. This gives each woman the chance to have control over her finances and plan for her future!
