Hailes Abbey As spring unfolds into longer, brighter days and winter slips away for another year, why not visit Hailes Abbey in its picturesque and peaceful setting? I hope my article this month might encourage you to visit or revisit this most atmospheric site. Hailes Abbey was founded in 1246 by Richard, Earl of Cornwall and brother of King John, to fulfil a promise he made to God when in danger of shipwreck in a storm near the Scilly Isles. Twenty monks came from his brother’s monastery at Beaulieu in Hampshire to organise the building of the abbey and five years later the king and queen attended a glittering ceremony to dedicate the abbey church. Hailes was one of the last monasteries ever to be built and it never prospered until 1277 when Richard’s son Edmund presented it with a small glass container said to contain Christ’s blood spilt at the crucifixion. This revolutionised the abbey’s fortunes. The church was enlarged with a shrine and right up until King Henry VIII closed the abbey on Christmas Eve 1539, it became a magnet for pilgrims. The faithful were told that visiting the Holy Blood would reduce their time in purgatory, where they were punished for their sins before reaching heaven, by twenty two years.

Sir John Drury, the vicar of Windrush near Oxford, declared the relic was a fake and he had wasted 18d on it when he visited in 1517. After the abbey had been closed, it was claimed to have been the blood of a drake or honey coloured with saffron. Yet the story of Hailes Abbey does not end with its closure in 1539. Part of it was converted into a country mansion where the Tracy family lived before they moved to Toddington. By the end of the eighteenth century the whole site had become ruinous. In 1899 the first archaeological investigations
We are fortunate to have a vivid account of what happened at the shrine, despite its being written by a sceptic at the end of the abbey’s life. In modern English it reads as follows, At the shrine the priest showed the pilgrim a small glass container. One side had thick glass; the other much thinner glass. The thick side was shown until the pilgrim had paid enough money (for holy mass) as the priest thought fit. Then the thin side was shown so the blood could be seen, to the pilgrim’s great joy. It was clear that the richer pilgrim, the more money the priest demanded! However not everyone valued the experience. The pious pilgrim Marjory Kempe visited the Page 6

took place and then conservation of the remains started in 1927, when the museum was opened and a halt built on the nearby railway to encourage visitors. The National Trust took over in 1948 and today it is managed by English Heritage, which continues to care for the site for ours and future generations to enjoy. Combined with a visit to the little parish church and Hailes Fruit farm, it provides a ready-made afternoon out on our doorstep! - David Aldred

The Better Life Village Life Our village is a society in miniature. There are helpers and hinderers, alliances, conflicts and the occasional historical feud, all in a state of flux. Think Emmerdale, minus the glamour. But also, in amongst the intrigue and entertainment, for the dedicated Better Lifer there is a wealth of knowledge, experience and produce. It’s less to do with any formal notion of exchange, and more about sharing what you know and whatever surplus you have. I like to think it helps that we are incomers and get on with everyone – a little like Switzerland, but with chickens instead of cuckoo clocks. Out the gate go butternut squashes, the occasional session of occasionally successful computer-related support, green beans, plant cuttings and spare eggs. (I should declare here that, although I love having the chooks, I can take or leave eggs – don’t tell Anne though.) Back through the gate, at various times, come flowers, leeks, marmalade, gooseberries aplenty, different plant cuttings and apples. When our tiny greenhouse needed to come down because the supporting wall required structural work, we asked around and found a good home for it. Well, a good garden actually. Three of us carried it up the lane in sections and two of us returned with rhubarb, Page 8
fresh flowers, beetroot, runner beans, chard and the most delicious raspberries imaginable. Living greener, the value of a thing is not financial; it’s the use someone can make of it. Only once did we slightly blot our village copybook. Invited up to a carol service at the nearby chapel, we arrived late (mea culpa) and sat in the annexe close to the open door. Someone stuck their head through and politely insisted, as we were the only ones in the room, that we joined the throng next door. Unfortunately, the only seating left was up in the pulpit. Judging by the sea of faces below us, it was a mixed reception. It didn’t help that Anne had forgotten her glasses and I have a habit of singing too loudly at social occasions. We’ve cried off every year since as a mark of community respect. That ‘blip’ aside, our fellow villagers are very supportive of our endeavours – being green is nothing new after all, especially in the countryside.
Wearing wellies to the shops, as you prefer to cut across the fields, and carrying back armfuls of kindling because it was too good an opportunity to waste, barely raises an eyebrow. And who doesn’t enjoy the sound of chickens in the morning? (Next door’s dog - that’s who.) Even our local builder got in on the act, turning up at 8am with a bag of mackerel, fresh off the boat, so he could teach me how to gut it. The cat really enjoyed the lesson, but I soon wished that I’d let my breakfast porridge settle a bit first. One villager, a carpenter, came to our rescue after the coat rack fell out of favour with the wall. It turned out that I’d managed to somehow miss both raw plugs when screwing it in – a personal best in DIY incompetence, which no doubt I will supersede at some point. “Well, we’re all good at something,” he told me, in a voice that suggested I really ought to find out just what that is. Spiced Rack with of Fragrant Lamb Rice Ready in 1 hour
Serves 4
Perfect for a spring Sunday lunch or stylish supper this quick and easy lamb dish is full of flavour. Choose a couple of meaty racks of lamb from a good butcher and score the layers of fat before spreading with the harissa paste. Serve with a cooling garlic and mint yoghurt sauce.
Ingredients: • 1 tbsp harissa paste (see Tip) • 2 trimmed racks of lamb, each with 6 bones • 2 red onions, peeled and cut into slim wedges • 50g butter • 225g basmati rice, rinsed and drained • 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed • 750ml vegetable stock • Generous pinch saffron strands • 50g sultanas • 40g flaked almonds, lightly toasted • 2 tbsp pomegranate seeds
Tip:
Harissa paste is a fiery hot North African blend of red chilli peppers and spices – just a little goes a long way so use sparingly. You’ll find it in small jars near the dried herb and spice sections in most large supermarkets.

Preheat the oven to 200C, 400F, Gas 6. Spread the harissa paste over the lamb racks. Place the racks in an oiled roasting tin and add the onion wedges. Roast in the preheated oven for 25-35 minutes depending on how pink you like your lamb. Remove from the oven. Cover with foil and leave to rest for 10 minutes – the lamb will be juicier and easier to carve. Meanwhile, heat the butter in a heavybased pan until melted and foaming. Add the rice and garlic. Fry gently for 1-2 minutes, stirring until the rice is translucent. Pour in the stock. Add the saffron and bring to the boil, stirring. Cover the pan with a tight fitting lid. Reduce the heat to the lowest setting and cook for 15-20 minutes without removing the lid until the rice is tender and all the liquid is absorbed. Remove from the heat. Fork through to separate the grains. Add the sultanas, flaked almonds and pomegranate seeds. Carve the lamb racks into individual cutlets and serve immediately with the fragrant rice and roast onion wedges.

Now I’m no great fan of green wellies (mine are black) but I am a fan of green-gardening. Yes, plenty of gorgeous greens in the beds and borders, but also an ecologically green outlook. Simply put, home grown food tastes better, uses little if any air miles, can save you a packet and is enormously rewarding. Grow your vegetables and you are really getting the top end of the market produce and minimising any harmful effects to the environment. Remember to grow what you like and what your garden can grow well - this may take some experimenting, but don’t be afraid to admit that Page 26

The new classes have been brought to town by Monkey Music, the UK’s award-winning pre-school music group. How to Win Friends From the playground to the workplace, we all know we’re not going to get by without a little help from our friends. But how do we go about forging those friendships in the first place? We’ve put together a collection of stories where a friendship is central. And it just goes to show, bonds can be formed in the most unlikely of places. Of Mice and Men John Steinbeck George Milton and Lennie Small are two migrant workers who dream of owning their own farm. Bruno meets Shmuel, who lives the other side, has a shaved head and is constantly hungry and the two form a friendship that will have devastating consequences. Boyne’s children’s book about concentration camps is a mustread for all adults. It will stay
with you for days, weeks and months afterwards, just as it should. Wonder R.J. It’s a complex and delicately interwoven tale of Chinese mothers and daughters, revealing secrets and lies and all striving to find a place in the modern world whilst feeling the constant tug of their past.
