GLOS DIRECTORIES | LOCAL HISTORY

Tewkesbury’s Family Treasures Family history seems to be an addiction which overcomes people the moment their parents have died – it is then too late to ask those vital questions. The internet, however, has proved a useful tool to compensate for this human foible. It is when the family historian looks beyond the “Tree” to seek the causes of decisions made, that it starts to make a significant contribution to understanding the history of our Town.

Serena Mapletoft of Peterborough has traced her family’s familiar emigration from the countryside to Tewkesbury and its experience in our own Workhouse (now Sheppard’s Mead retirement complex). Local resident, Derek Benson, has chosen to research the life of our 19th century plutocratic, but reforming, M.P., John Martin. By the 20th century however, the electoral rules had changed and a future M.P. started as an errand boy at Frisbys! After being decorated in World War I, M.P. Bertie Kirby found fame in Liverpool as a trades’ unionist, who lost his job in the 1919 Police Strike - but who died a respected Labour Parliamentarian in 1953.

Family snap Sober Railwayman with eccentric friend?

Without the internet, we probably would never have met Mike Everley, who lives in Swansea. His wife’s family came to Tewkesbury as textile workers, suffered a terrible industrial accident and then succumbed to a tragic laudanum overdose in the face of adversity. This year he traces that family’s happier metamorphosis into railway servants and soldiers of the Queen in South Wales. Page 6

Pansy Cottage, Mt Pleasant an unlikely home for future M.P. Kirby!

GLOS DIRECTORIES | LOCAL HISTORY It was from a member of his family that I first learned of the tragic death of Arthur Hanlon, a baker who served in the Home Guard. He died tragically following an explosion during a training accident at Healings Mill. Mick Wilkes has interviewed dwindling members of the so-called Dad’s Army and continued his history of the Home Guard. He reveals the increasing importance of these part-time soldiers to our national defences. Many Tewkesbury people remember enforced visitors, who were none too popular on their arrival, but who gradually became accepted as welcome members of the community. It was a recent but chance conversation at a rugby match by Alan Snarey that brought us the very welcome acquaintance of a former German P.O.W., Joachim Schulze, who actually “enjoyed” his time as a Guest of His Majesty”! He “lodged” at a camp at what is now the Canterbury Leys Public House, but worked for his keep for Apperley farmers. Once he had returned to Germany, he became, not Arthur Hanlon’s death is not only a convinced commemorated on the Cross democrat, but also a teacher of History and English. His article needed very little editing! That same war also enriched the life of Tewkesbury, by bringing us evacuees who remained after the war. Gordon Baker continues his memoirs as Britain tried to “build” itself out of austerity! Today’s pub - formerly His Majesty’s ‘Camp Newtown’

There are so many more stories to discover: Karen Banks has researched 17th C Stocking making; youthful mathematician, Ian Coggin, has written historical fiction about a battle near Apperley while Jim Freeman has written about the eccentric couple from Walton Cardiff whose photograph graces the cover. All these enriched treasures can be discovered in T.H.S. Bulletin 21 (2012), obtainable at Alison’s Bookshop. Article written by John Dixon, President of Tewkesbury Historical Society

Feel great this

Summer

It’s never too late to start making yourself feel good - both mentally and physically - and summer is a great time get started. Giving a little attention to your diet, exercise and general wellbeing can really benefit your overall health. Diet You don’t have to radically alter your diet as even small changes will benefit you. • Blackberries, blueberries, cranberries and strawberries are all high in antioxidants and fibre, are nutritious and eating great handfuls will fill you up with healthy energy • All melons, but particularly watermelons are mainly water. They’re healthy and a great option if you need something sweet • Courgettes, aubergine, mushrooms, leeks, asparagus, onions, peppers and garlic are all delicious grilled or roasted with a light brush of olive oil. High in nutrition and flavour, low in calories • There are no rules for salads - just put in any vegetables or fruit that you have, such as lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber and avocado. Combining different greens or lettuces, such as cos, romaine, Chinese leaf, rocket or watercress make salads more interesting and are cheaper than buying the ready-packaged salads. Add beans, couscous or tabouli for a bit of substance. • Alcohol is high in calories, so reduce this by enjoying a white wine spritzer (50/50 wine with sparkling water) or going for a non-alcohol alternative, such as lemon barley water or lime cordial with sparkling water. Exercise This doesn’t have to mean daily sessions at the gym or long-distance running. The key to weight loss is using up more calories than you’ve eaten, and there are lots of ways you can achieve this: • Walk. Sounds simple - and it is. Start by walking locally three times a week for just 20 minutes. Build up the pace so that you can do the route more quickly and extend the time to 30 minutes by extending your route. If you can fit in four walks a week, or even every day, go for it - you will notice the difference. • Yoga is a great exercise for stretching and toning your muscles without having to break out into sweat. In the summer heat, your muscles are already warm and relaxed. Even better, find a class held outside to enjoy nature along with your session. • If you are exercising in the heat, remember to keep to the shade and wear a hat to protect your head and neck. Wearing sunglasses will protect your eyes and help you to avoid squinting, causing lines around the eyes.

Page 10

• Gardening is great exercise as you use a wide range of muscles and are constantly moving. Wellbeing We all have to deal with stress at some point and research shows that it’s actually the small things in life (being stuck in a traffic jam, forgetting to pick up the dry cleaning, missing a work deadline etc) that causes more tension and anxiety than the major life events. So, allow yourself some ‘me time’. This simply means doing things just for yourself and just for the pleasure of it. Allowing yourself 20 minutes a day to potter in your garden, read the paper, or even take a nap calms the mind, lowers blood pressure and, just as importantly, gives you a few minutes to just ‘be’. More recent research shows that we don’t necessarily need eight hours sleep. Many of us can exist quite happily on less but what’s important is the quality of your sleep rather than the quantity. Try to stick to a routine, even with the lighter summer nights, winding down and avoiding alcohol too late in the evening. If your room gets too warm, fans are a great way to cool the temperature and their low hum will help you drift off to sleep. By Pippa Duncan

Slimming World

How does Slimming World Work?

At Slimming World they are not only losing pounds but their slimmers have also raised £’s for charity!

Based around satiating low energy dense ‘Free Foods’ like fruit and vegetables, pasta, rice, potatoes, eggs, lean meat and fish, the plan guides users to choose healthy and filling foods that satisfy their appetite for fewer calories. At Slimming World Free Foods can be eaten in unlimited quantities, so there’s no need to ever feel hungry or deprived. To encourage a healthy balanced diet, the plan also includes daily measured portions of ‘Healthy Extra’ foods like dairy, and fibre rich foods like wholemeal bread or cereal. At the same time nothing is banned, so slimmers can still indulge in their favourite treats – whether chocolate, wine, or something else altogether – as long as they stay within their daily ‘Syns’ count.

- the club with the big heart

During 2011, Rebecca’s group managed to raise £330 for members charities including: £50 for Maritime volunteer service, £50 for Children’s Physio Unit, £55 for Tewkesbury Hospital, £55 for Girls Brigade, £80 for Roses Youth Theatre, £50 for Children in Need and they also donated £90 to the newly refurbed Boys Brigade Community Centre. Seasonal Recipe This quick curry is so easy to make and much cheaper than a take away. We’ve used lean lamb steaks but you could replace the lamb with pork fillet, chicken or turkey.

Heat 1tbsp of the oil in a large deep frying pan. Add the lamb chunks and fry over a high heat until browned all over. Remove the lamb from the pan with a slotted spoon and set aside. Add the rest of the oil to the pan and fry the onion and aubergine for 7-8 minutes, stirring all the time until golden. Stir in the curry paste and cook for 1 minute then pour in the sieved tomatoes and bring to the boil. Return to the lamb to the pan and reduce the heat to a simmer. Cover and cook gently for 25-30 minutes until the lamb is tender. Stir occasionally and add a splash of water if needed. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve the curry in warmed bowls garnished with coriander and with chapattis, sliced tomatoes, cucumber and onions.

Serves 4 Ready in 50 minutes Page 14

Lamb and Aubergine Curry • 3 tbsp sunflower oil • 650g lean lamb steaks, cut into chunks • 1 onion, peeled and chopped • 1 large aubergine, cut into cubes • 2tbsp Rogan Josh curry paste • 400g sieved tomatoes • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • Fresh coriander leaves, to garnish • Chapattis, sliced tomatoes, cucumber and onion, to serve

TIP

You’ll find jars of curry pastes in most supermarkets and they certainly take all the hassle out of making an authentic tasting curry at home. Rogan josh is a medium-hot paste but for a really mild flavour use a korma paste or go for a vindaloo paste if you prefer a curry with a little more heat.

High Tech TV

Could the googlebox become a Google Box?

Although TV technology has changed dramatically over the years, with sets getting bigger, thinner and more detailed - and in some cases threedimensional - the way we use them has barely changed until now. Here’s how some of tech’s biggest names want to transform your television. Samsung’s awfully named UE40ES8000 TV shows where things are heading. Its bright 40-inch LED display can handle both 2D and 3D and more interestingly, can be controlled by waving at it. Your first wave gets the TV’s attention, and you can then change channels or volume with simple gestures. There’s a lot to gesture at. In addition to a Freeview HD tuner, there’s also integrated Wi-Fi wireless networking so that the TV can connect to your wireless network, enabling iPad-style apps such as the BBC iPlayer and YouTube. You can also subscribe to film-ondemand services such as Lovefilm and Netflix, or use social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. There’s even a Skype application for making voice and video calls. It’s clever stuff, but there are two problems. The first is the price. At £1,499 the UE40ES8000 is the

Page 16

cheapest in the range. The second is that we tend to keep our TVs for much longer than we do our computers. Will Samsung’s apps still work three years from now, or five? Will something better come along and make it obsolete? For now the smarter choice might be a box that brings similar features to your existing TV. Apple’s TV (£99) is one option, offering iTunes movie downloads and rentals as well as optional Netflix video on demand. It can also stream movies from your Mac, PC, iPad or iPhone. A similar Google-powered set from Sony, the NSZ-GS7 (£200) goes on sale this summer, and a version that also includes a Blu-Ray disc player is expected later this year. If you’d considered an Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 but dismissed them because you’re not too interested in games, it might be time to think again: both consoles have dropped in price (you can get them for less than £150) and become powerful multimedia systems. For example the Xbox has its own Zune video marketplace as well as apps for Sky TV, Lovefilm

and Netflix. Nintendo’s Wii is handy here, too, with both iPlayer and Netflix available, and you can even get Lovefilm and Netflix-enabled DVD players. Just bear in mind that to access those services you’ll need to connect your devices to the internet, and you’ll also need to pay a subscription fee for the video on demand services. Today’s TV technology is very clever, but the big question is whether Apple TV, Google TV or any other hightech system will take over the mainstream: many of us find Sky+ boxes and Virgin Media TiVo’s enough hassle, and adding all kinds of apps and services to the gogglebox could annoy as many people as it enthuses. There’s also the issue that technology isn’t always as good as it’s cracked up to be: despite our Xbox having both voice and gesture recognition in the shape of its Kinect sensor, we’ve often found ourselves bellowing and waggling our arms with no effect whatsoever. If your current TV set-up is doing everything you need it to do, it might be a good idea to wait a few years before upgrading. That way you’ll see what, if any, TV technology emerges triumphant.

Creating Space Are you feeling cluttered, chaotic and claustrophobic at home? Katherine Sorrell offers six quick and easy tips to help create more space Step One: Clear out that clutter It’s boring but simple: sort through your stuff. All your stuff. Unless you’re absolutely certain you want to keep it where it is, then put it into boxes or bags marked for rubbish, recycling, giving away, mending or storing elsewhere. If it’s too painful to do this all at once, aim for one room per week, or else do ten minutes a day – then make a habit of keeping on top of it, with regular sortouts. You’ll be amazed how much extra space you find when your house is no longer crammed full of unnecessary clutter.

Creating Space

Step Two: Create super-efficient storage Every nook and cranny around your home can be used to store your possessions in a neat and organised fashion. placed in just the right spots to make the most of natural light. As for artificial lighting, bear in mind that the traditional central pendant, used on its own, creates gloomy corners and offers no atmosphere. Instead, think about employing a more interesting combination of different types of lighting for flexibility, comfort and interest. For a quick upgrade on a budget, simply replace main light switches with dimmers, and plug in a selection of table or floor lamps at key points, to layer the lighting and emphasise special features. Step Four: Be flexible with furniture When you have run out of space, it makes sense to take a long, hard look at your furniture and make sure that every single piece is worth its place in your home. Simple, slender styles have the least impact in a small space, while pale or transparent pieces blend into the background, and anything raised on legs will make your room seem larger (because there is more visible floor area). In general, avoid deep upholstery, bulky outlines and fussy detailing. Exclusive Boiler Scrappage Scheme £400 off! SO WHAT IS THE CATCH, THERE IS ALWAYS A CATCH WITH A DEAL LIKE THIS? No catch; this is a genuine offer with no small print. If you want to replace your boiler this spring then get in touch with us and we will give you a free, no obligation quotation for a new boiler. Accept our quotation and you will get a £400 discount off the invoice cost of your installation, it does not matter how old the boiler is, or in what condition. We take pride in offering our local customers a professional boiler installation carried out by fully trained engineers at a competitive price.

Scott Johnston, MD of Johnston Scotia tells us about the latest offers they have for you to improve your heating and hot this spring. SO WHAT CHOICE OF BOILERS IS IN THIS SCHEME? We have two excellent brands that we have teamed up with to bring customers this offer. They are Viessmann, which is a German boiler manufacturer and Intergas from the Netherlands. Both of these companies have been making high efficiency condensing boilers in Europe since the 1980’s, both offer a 3 year product warranty which is extended to 5 years when the boiler is installed by Johnston Scotia. Both guarantee the heat exchanger of their boiler for 10 years. These boilers are rated over 90% for efficiency and designed to lower your heating bills.

W HY SHOULD I CONSIDER REPLACING MY OLD GAS BOILER? Boiler technology has advanced greatly in recent years and now boilers are able to deliver high levels of energy efficiency and reduce your bills whilst delivering more hot water and better heating.

£400 OFF

SCHEME ADVERTISED A COUPLE CF YEARS AGO, ARE THERE STILL DEALS LIKE THAT?

We have approached two boiler manufacturers to join us to set up an exclusive scheme offering a £400 Boiler Scrappage Discount with no restrictions when customers accept our quote for a new boiler until the end of this summer.

PERFORMANCE OR EXTEND THE LIFE OF AN EXISTING BOILER?

Johnston Scotia can help you achieve better efficiency, improve your hot water and heating and extend the life of your boiler by carrying out a professional cleansing of your boiler and heating system called Power Flushing. W HAT IS POWER FLUSHING AND WHAT ARE ITS BENEFITS? There is a natural chemical reaction that takes place between heated water and the metal in pipe work and radiators, this process can be slowed down by adding chemical inhibitors to your heating system but eventually you will get a build up of sludge deposits in radiators that create cold spots. This debris and any metal particles get pulled into your boiler, slowly clogging up and blocking the components and making the boiler less efficient, resulting in less hot water, poor heating and higher fuel bills because the boiler needs to work harder. SO HAVING A POWER FLUSH SOLVES THIS?

THERE WAS THE BOILER SCRAPPAGE

The government sponsored scheme was only open to certain types of boiler and although successful came to a swift end because of limited funding.

SO HOW DO I TAKE UP THIS DEAL? Simply contact us for a free, no obligation quote to replace any gas boiler of any age and when you accept our quote you will benefit from a saving of £400 off the cost of the installation.

Working from home The house considered as a gym Well, I’ve had my heart attack – fortunately minor, and much to nobody’s very great surprise. The temptation to conflate “working from home” with “housebound” gradually crept up on me, and for the last few years the only exercise I’ve taken has been walking the dog in the morning and ambling to the pub two or three evenings a week. In fact I was on my way home from a beer festival when it happened, which I suppose is justice of a sort. When I think about it (and a heart attack, however minor, does prompt a certain amount of reflection) it’s astonishing how lazy I’ve become. I do actually possess a bike, but it’s so long since I’ve ridden it that the wheels are now anchored to the ground by thick coils of bindweed. I walk to town most days, but as town is three minutes stroll away it’s not exactly a vigorous cardiovascular workout. Even walking the dog doesn’t raise a sweat – I pooter along gently while she runs frantic rings around me. Couple this epic lack of activity with a fondness for beer and pork scratchings and it’s a heart attack waiting to happen – and mine thought it had waited quite long enough. I’ve actually gone on a diet, which is showing early promise at the cost

of quite some personal sacrifice. I’ve replaced butter, which I love, with cholesterol-busting low-fat spread, which I hate. On my (wholemeal) toast I’ve replaced marmalade, which I adore, with Marmite, which happily I also adore. I’ve given up cheese (almost), and I take the skin off my roast chicken. I’ve also given up beer and scratchings, but this has the downside of curtailing my exercise regime – ie the regular stroll to the pub and back. And exercise is just as important as diet. I know what I should be doing. I should be cycling, swimming, jogging, doing Nordic walking in the park with a couple of ski poles – that sort of malarkey. But my working day is already quite fragmented enough what with laundry, washing up, straightening the cushions on the sofa and all the other myriad household chores that take the working out of working from home. Instead, therefore, I intend to reinvent my house as a gym. Here’s how I plan to do it. Stretching: I’m moving all the kitchen items I frequently use – coffee, the tin-opener, that sort of thing – from the bottom shelf of the dresser to the top and all the items I never use – the teapot, mainly – from the top shelf to the bottom. The extra stretching this entails will provide a

good warm-up for the day’s exertions. Step exercises: henceforth I’ll use the upstairs loo rather than the downstairs one – 14 steps five times a day, or thereabouts, should soon trim those unsightly pounds. The treadmill: I propose to take the empty milk-bottles out to the crate one at a time instead of all at once. The crate is at the far end of the garden, all of 10 yards from the back door, and I might even be quite brisk about it. The rowing machine: I’m putting all the condiments at the far end of the kitchen table from the place where I usually sit. I am confident that these measures will supply all the exercise I need to pre-empt any further cardiovascular interruptions. But not very confident... by Ted Bruning

Inventions Elevators “Welcome to Canary Wharf - the office you require is on the 18th floor.” Or “Welcome to the Eiffel Tower. There are wonderful views of the city from the Observation Level.” A world without elevators is unthinkable. Elevators may be considered modern inventions however they are first referenced by Roman architect Vitruvius who reported that Archimedes (c287BC-c212BC) constructed one in about 236BC. One of the most famous ancient lifts, a cab on hemp rope elevated manually, is at the Sinai monastery in Egypt and the ’Book of Secrets’ by Ibn Khalaf al-Muradi in Islamic Spain described the use of an elevator-like lifting mechanism for heavy equipment. Early

elevators used manual hoists or winders but by 1793 the first screw-driven elevator was installed in the Russian Winter Palace, built by Ivan Kulibin. By the mid-1800s, hundreds of goods lifts were in use. Operated by increasing water pressure inside a cylinder, a steel column below the cab caused it to rise, aided by a counterweight. As buildings grew taller, however, this proved impractical, as it required a pit as deep as the building was tall. In 1852, Elisha Otis introduced his revolutionary safety braking system, which prevented the fall of the cab if the cable snapped. In 1854 he demonstrated his invention in a death-defying demonstration in the Crystal Palace and in March 1857, the first Otis passenger elevator was installed at 488 Broadway in New York City. Strangely enough, the first elevator shaft preceded the first working elevator by four years. Today elevators are everywhere and special adaptations are Dumb Waiters, exterior glass elevators on buildings and the Paternoster in busy commercial premises. Thank you Mr Otis.

The Evil Weevil The vine weevil (Otiorhynchus sulcatus) is notorious, especially for gardeners who concentrate on pots, and always feature in any gardening poll of ‘top pests’. Both the adults and their grubs do damage, but it’s the innocent looking grubs that give the vine weevil its bad reputation. They’re an immensely successful pest; there are only females and each one is capable of laying about 1,000 eggs during the summer. Now that they’re being controlled successfully commercially, they’re perhaps less of a problem to gardeners than they once were but if you have them in your garden, whether you like it or not, you probably need to get to know them better.

The Evil Weevil

the weevil itself. They tend to feed in the evening or at night, usually doing most damage on the lower, most accessible leaves. The young stage weevils or grubs are about 1cm long, creamy white in colour and often curled into a ‘C’ shape, with no legs but a gingery brown head. You’re likely to find them in the compost or soil, usually close to the roots or tubers that they’ve been feeding on. They eat the roots, burrow in to tubers and on woody plants may even eat the tissues at the stem base and on larger roots. Unless you’re removing a plant from its pot, or digging one up you’re unlikely to notice the grubs; it is when a plant suddenly starts to wilt or die, or you realise that something is no longer firmly rooted that alarm bells should begin to ring.

What Do Vine Weevils Attack?

Vine weevils will attack nearly any plant you try to grow, particularly in containers, probably because it’s easier for them to move through compost than garden soil. P-A-R-T-Why...?

Because we have loads of houmous

I went to a dinner party last week, and afterwards I started reflecting on how things change when you make those tentative first steps across the border into your thirties. There was a time when my band was throwing a lot of parties - just ask our neighbours (actually, please don’t) - but as we approached the end of our twenties, weekly blow-outs slowly became less frequent, eventually to be almost entirely replaced by The Dinner Party. This started me thinking about how The Dinner Party represents a microcosm of how the world subtly changes when you reach this oftfeared milestone. First of all, there’s that word ‘Dinner’. It crept in quietly, sometime around 28 years old, and now it’s hanging around casually in a corner of the room next to its evil twin ‘Party’ as if to say: ‘Hi there, don’t mind me - I’m just going to pop myself down here and make sure nobody turns the stereo up too loud or pukes in the herb garden’. Dinner used to be a thing you avoided in order to maximise just how trolleyed seven crates of Raspberry Hooch was going to render you. Now, however, it’s very much the raison d’être of your evening. But we’ll come to that later… Upon your arrival at The Dinner Party, you’ll be keen to catch up on everyone’s news. And by news, I mean Who’s Getting Engaged, Married and/or Pregnant. If, like me, you’re doing none of these things, you will form a small sub-strata of society in some forgotten alcove of the conservatory; a whispering coven of maverick free-thinkers who believe there are things in the world worth talking about other than how massive Jemimah’s engagement ring is. With these people you will proceed to talk for at least half an hour about how massive Jemimah’s engagement ring is. Then it’s on to the food, which will definitely involve seeds and butternut squash. Everyone will praise the hosts for their use of artichoke hearts in the salad, because, as it turns out, being on the cutting edge of salad

represents important social currency to the over-thirties. As the evening progresses, you’ll find out who’s on a diet (EVERYONE) and who’s taken up some over-priced alternative therapy that’s convinced them to give up totally normal things like red meat and socks. And if the Pinot Noir has done its job, eventually the conversation will turn nostalgic and you’ll all start gushing about how things were different when you were kids, more innocent somehow. ‘Radical’, for example, used to be how a Ninja Turtle described a high-risk skateboarding move. Now it means ‘Have dirty bomb, will travel’. Personally, I love being in my thirties. It feels more majestic than the hurried scramble of my twenties. And yes, it may now be a scant occurrence that I find myself tearing up the dance floor and drinking Guinness from a shoe, but perhaps those occasions will be more glorious for their rarity. Just don’t judge me if, now and again, I break into an excitable sweat at the sight of a nice bowl of vine-ripened tomato salsa. Everyone has their vices... Saved by the Bell

September signals the end of the summer holidays and the start of the new academic year. While you’re replenishing supplies of notepads and pens, why not pick up a novel that’s based in a school? Fail to find our book selection highly entertaining and… see me afterwards. Never Let Me Go Kazuo Ishiguro On the face of it, Hailsham boarding school in the heart of the English countryside seems idyllic. The students are nurtured, encouraged to stay healthy and are protected from the outside world. The story centres round the love triangle of Kathy, Ruth and Tommy. As a now thirty-one year old, Kathy begins to reflect on their time at Hailsham and what it means to have been a student there. Without wanting to give the plot away, Hailsham has a dark secret and only a special type of person may attend. Ultimately, it’s a story about love, friendship and hope. Skippy Dies Paul Murray Opening with a dramatic doughnuteating contest in which Skippy does indeed kick the bucket, this is a wildly funny and equally gross insight into the minds of teenage boys. Overweight genius Ruprecht Van Doren and his roommate Daniel ‘Skippy’ Juster attend Seabrook College for Boys in Dublin. Beginning at the end, it then goes back in time to follow Ruprecht in his pursuit of Lori from the neighbouring girls’ school. If you thought teenage boys were obsessed with

Page 38

flatulence and other bodily functions, you’re right. They’re also children struggling to find their identity and for that, the book is incredibly endearing. The Catcher in the Rye J.D. Salinger From the opening paragraph we’re in the mindset of the rebel with a cause, the ‘catcher in the rye’ himself, 16 year old Holden Caulfield. He’s been expelled from prep school and through his biting narration, edgy cynicism and general teenage angst, we’re all reminded what it’s like to be adolescent. With its profanity and sexual content it remains on many banned book lists and thus has become an anthem for youth. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone J.K. Rowling From the moment Harry, Ron and Hermione board the Hogwart’s Express at platform 9¾ we know that school will never be the same again. Who wouldn’t want to dine in the Great Hall, be tutored in muggle studies and represent your house at Quidditch? Featuring every aspect of boarding school life wizard-style, it’s an absolute must-read.

Goodbye, Mr Chips James Hilton This time it’s the teachers’ turn to have a voice. ‘Goodbye, Mr Chips’ is the sentimental tale of Mr Chipping, a much-loved staff member at a fictional boys’ public boarding school. Failing to connect with the pupils at first he eventually finds his confidence and a new love. Ok, it’s a bit mushy and sentimental but there’s something about these warm recollections of the retired schoolmaster that will melt your heart. Beautifully-written and wonderfully nostalgic it’ll have even the former bad boys remembering school through misty eyes. The Blackboard Jungle Evan Hunter Set in New York, this is a gritty and realistic portrayal of a new teacher’s struggle to maintain discipline in an inner-city school. It may have been set in the 1950s but the subject matter is timeless, dealing with violence in a way that rings as clear as the school bell within today’s society. It has a brilliant climax that’s worth the wait and will make your old comprehensive feel like something from Enid Blyton.
