Less is more (sort of)! If you regularly read the editor’s letter, you’ll be used to seeing Vicky’s face each time. But Vicky has now moved onto pastures new and so this month’s letter comes from me, Anne Golldack. I’ve actually been working at Glos Directories for many years and produce the magazines anyway so in many ways it makes more sense if I’m the one saying ‘read all about it’. There are some changes in the magazine this month to let you know about. Firstly we’ve found over the last couple of years we’ve been getting more and more local information, charity requests and groups features. We want to include it all – it’s hard to say no – but in order to do so I’ve been making the text smaller and smaller. A couple of people had said they found it a little hard to read, so we’ve gone on a metaphorical diet and revamped the features. It’s not that there’s less, it’s just that we’ve
asked our contributors to be a little more succinct in their writing. So as ever this month you’ll find groups and clubs, events, local news but also some new features, including a lovely short story. Finally this time, a ‘thanks’ to our lovely advertisers who make this magazine possible. There are some great businesses operating in this area so please do use them when you can, including Slimming World if you need to go on a real diet!

Short Story Precious By Jackie Brewster Dan leaned against a lamp post covered in posters, watching the house at number fifteen. The curtains were drawn and the place seemed deserted. If Alan was the creature of habit that Dan thought he was, any moment now he’d be returning home with his tray of chips and a battered sausage.
know you’re okay.”
Alan had dropped Dan’s sisterin-law, Pam, off on New Year’s Day, with the promise to come and collect her the day after. He hadn’t been seen since.
Alan’s face crumpled. “I’ve done something unforgiveable,” he said.
“Do you think they’ve had a row?” Dan had asked his wife Amy. “Pam’s being tight-lipped,” Amy said. “She just flops on the settee all day eating your chocolate liqueurs and sniffing.” Dan would never describe Alan as much of a catch, but he felt compelled to reunite these two lovebirds - if nothing else, just to get his sofa back. On cue, a shadowy figure crept through the shadows and slipped through the doorway into number fifteen. Dan crossed the road and hammered on the door. There was no answer. The letter box was wedged open with a copy of the same poster about a missing sphynx cat that had been stapled to the lamp post. He pushed it to one side and shouted, “Alan, it’s Dan, I know you’re in there.” There was silence. “I’m not interested in what’s gone on between you and Pam,” he called. “I just want to Page 6
The hall light came on. The door creaked open and Alan stood in the hallway holding his battered sausage. “Is Pam alright?” he asked, taking a bite. “She’s worried about you,” Dan said. “We all are.”
Dan’s heart sank. Was he going to be stuck with his sister-in-law indefinitely? “Tell me what it is,” he asked calmly. “I’m sure we can fix it.” “Pammy mustn’t know,” Alan said desperately. “I can’t promise you that.” Dan followed Alan into the lounge. “Just tell me what’s happened.” “I need more time.” Alan perched on the arm of the sofa and regarded his chips mournfully. “Time for what?” Dan said. “For the cat’s fur to grow back,” Alan said miserably. “I beg your pardon?” Dan said. “I went out for a few ales with Dufty after I dropped Pam off.” Alan ate another chip. “And the next morning I discovered I’d shaved Precious.” “Do you mean Pam’s cat?” Dan asked in surprise. “Yes, Precious the cat,” Alan nodded. “I’d shaved all her fur off. No idea why. I don’t even remember doing it.” His shoulders heaved. “I’ve made her a little jumper.”
Dan felt a powerful urge to laugh. “Alan, Precious is at our house with Pam,” he said gently. “You brought her in her basket, remember?” Through the cat flap climbed a fierce looking bald cat wearing a ragged tube sock. Dan looked at the cat, and the cat scowled back. “If that’s not Precious,” Alan said nervously, “what is it?” “It’s a sphynx cat.” Dan crouched down and examined the cat’s collar. “Her owners have been looking for her.” “I’ve shaved a stranger’s cat!” Alan wailed. Dan was about to explain that sphynx cats were supposed to be hairless when he stopped himself. “I can fix this for you. No one need ever know,” he said instead. “But first, phone Pam and beg her to come home.” “I owe you Dan.” Alan licked ketchup off his fingers. Staring warily at the cat he picked up his phone. Yes you do, thought Dan, and said, “A box of chocolate liqueurs would be a good place to start.”

Sweet Recipe Lemon Mascarpone Creams These quick and easy desserts make a delicious sweet treat for any occasion. Add the zest of 1 lemon to the cream mixture for an extra citrus kick.
Ingredients:
1.
• Juice of 2 large lemons
Mix the lemon juice and sugar in a bowl and stir until the sugar has dissolved.
2.
Place the mascarpone in a large mixing bowl and beat with a wooden spoon until soft and smooth. Gradually beat in half the lemon sugar mixture, beating well after each addition.
3.
In a separate bowl, whip the cream until softly peaking. Gently fold the cream into the lemon mascarpone mixture. If it is a little too firm, fold in 2-3 tbsp of milk or single cream.
4.
Dip four of the sponge fingers in some of the remaining lemon and sugar mixture then arrange in the base of four glass serving dishes, breaking to fit if necessary. Spoon half the mascarpone cream mixture on top.
5.
Repeat the layers once more using the rest of the sponge fingers, lemon sugar mixture and lemon mascarpone cream. Scatter the white chocolate curls over the top. Serve immediately or chill in the fridge for 2-3 hours before serving.
• 50g caster sugar • 250g tub mascarpone cheese • 200ml double cream • 10 sponge fingers • 2 tbsp white chocolate curls, to decorate (see tip)
Serves 4 Ready in 15 minutes
TIP
To make white chocolate curls, run a swivel-bladed vegetable peeler along the side of a bar of good quality white chocolate. Page 10

20 is Plenty There is no doubt our roads are getting safer. Annual road deaths from 2013 - 2016 are around 1,750, lower than the 1990s when they were well above 3,000. However, there has been an increase in fatalities in built-up areas involving elderly pedestrians. To try and reduce this figure, local authorities are introducing 20 mph speed limits in urban areas. This lower speed limit is not new: 20 mph zones have been used in lots of places for many years. So zone or limit: what’s the difference? 20 mph zones are usually found in urban areas and are designed to be ‘self-policing’, with the use of measures such as humps, pinch points and chicanes to slow traffic and indicate that the road is shared with pedestrians and other road users.
A 20 mph limit area differs in that motorists are alerted to this lower speed limit either via repeated permanent signs or flashing indicators at key places and times, e.g. outside a school at pick-up time. Research shows that 20 mph limits are very effective at reducing deaths and injuries. Highlighting the reason for the lower speed limit, by the use of ‘Frail pedestrians’ or ‘Pedestrians in road ahead’ triangular warning signs or the yellow ‘school zone’ sign, also helps. Having been a witness to a fatal accident involving an elderly pedestrian, I welcome these speed-reduced zones. Frankly, in urban areas, going above the 30 mph limit only gets us to the next red light quicker, so what’s the issue with driving a little slower if it saves a life?

Overhaul Your Lawn by Pippa Greenwood every 4-6 inches or so, getting the fork tines to a depth of 4-6 inches, then gently ease the handle of the fork back and forth to enlarge each drainage hole.
It has rained so much in recent months that my lawn has taken a battering, though the flower and vegetable beds are starting to pick up. Over-wet conditions can cause roots to die off and will reduce the oxygen in the soil. Worse still, any areas of the lawn you’ve walked on or moved a wheelbarrow over will have become compacted or squashed. Thus, the air spaces in the soil are dramatically reduced, and the heavier your soil is, the worse the problem is likely to be. So for green grass that’s ready for summer, it’s time to get to work.
Next, mix some sieved garden soil or loam with horticultural sand (about one part soil/loam to nine parts sand) and brush across the lawn and into the holes you’ve made. The result is a drainage system over those compacted areas.
Check over your lawn mower and see to anything that needs sorting. If necessary, take it to a reputable outlet for a service as soon as possible. If your grass needs cutting, make sure you don’t set the blades too low for the first few cuts, as this weakens growth and makes weed invasion more likely. After mowing, you can relieve some of the soil compaction to allow air down to the roots, making for better growth and healthier grass. If only small areas are compacted, drive a garden fork into the lawn Page 20
If the soil in the garden is quite heavy or contains a lot of clay, the whole lawn will benefit from aerating. I recommend you buy, borrow or hire a ‘hollowtime aerator’, either as a hand operated one, a machine or a mower attachment. This cuts cylinders of soil from your lawn and when filled with the ‘top-dressing’ mix above will result in longer-lasting drainage channels. Any moss should be removed, so apply moss killer and then rake it all out after the time specified on the pack. The lawn will look worse initially, but it allows more air to the roots of the grass plants and gives them more space to grow and spread too.
Lawns that have suffered from waterlogging benefit from a suitable feeding regime. Whether you choose a granular or liquid feed, make sure that it is a spring lawn food formulated to give the balance of nutrients lawns need now. Granular feeds must be watered in unless it rains shortly after application. Walking on a very wet lawn soon wears it out and kills off grasses. To repair bald or thin patches, roughen up the areas using a rake and then sprinkle a suitable seed mix on to match the existing grasses. If you’ve not got many patches to sow, you can buy small patch repair packs. Once all the work is done, keep off your lawn for a few weeks to allow it to take advantage of all that TLC and grow away really well. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com and you’ll find some great gardening things: ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ (where you receive your chosen garden-ready vegetable plants in May accompanied by weekly advice and tips from Pippa) plus Nemaslug, bio-controls, gardening tools, raised bed kits, Grower Frames, signed books and more!

Overbury Bowling Club Open Day 2018
During the winter, Overbury Bowling Club (www.overburybowling.net) fielded 5 teams in the indoor leagues at Littleton and is now poised to start the new 2018 outdoor season. The green will be officially opened for the new year by the club president Penelope Bossom, of the Overbury Estate, on 15th April 2018. Situated right on the border of Gloucestershire and Worcestershire on the Overbury Estate, Overbury Bowling Club enjoys a large membership from Winchcombe, Greet, Toddington, Alderton, Bishop's Cleeve and surrounds. As well as playing bowls, Overbury Bowling Club has an active social side which includes skittles evenings, whist drives and fun days.
New members, both young and senior, are always welcome to join in this very social and sporting activity. The club has both equipment and qualified coaches to get the inexperienced up and running quickly. On 22nd April 2018 from 2.00pm, Overbury Bowling Club is holding an Open Day. To 'give it a go', come along on the day – we will be pleased to meet you and will provide you with everything necessary to try out bowls. Directions are on the club's website along with contact details. Even though bowls is perceived to be a retirement activity, many of the younger generation who tried bowls on the club's 'Have a Go' stand at the Winchcombe Country Show in 2017 enjoyed their taster session and, hopefully, will return to take up the sport this year. For more information, contact Overbury Bowling Club at info@overburybowling.net or one of the club officials listed on www.overburybowling.net
