A Close Encounter at the Races I ended my last article, Cheltenham races on Cleeve Hill in 1820, by referring to the Reverend Francis Close’s opposition to them. With the Gold Cup meeting still fresh in our memory, I now want to consider this interesting little episode in the races’ history. Readers might be surprised by the familiarity of some of the arguments!

Francis Close arrived in Cheltenham as a young enthusiastic Anglican priest in 1824. Two years later he was appointed vicar of St Mary’s parish church; a post he held for the next thirty years. In the 1820s Cheltenham was not only attracting visitors to its waters but its permanent population was growing rapidly. Close entered this fast-moving world with the clear intention of raising the town’s moral tone. So he campaigned tirelessly, for more schools and churches for the poor and for the cause of teetotalism, but also vigorously against the Roman Catholic religion and Irish immigration, the theatre and Sunday trains and against the races. The pulpit in St Mary’s church provided his main platform as people packed in to hear his lively, hard-hitting sermons. On Sunday morning 17 June 1827, nicely timed ten days before the annual race meeting, he waded in to “the evil consequences of attending the racecourse”. Racegoers were “generally speaking the least desirable visitors”, who deterred the more numerous, more respectable visitors to the detriment of not only religion and morality, but also of trade.

His image of the racegoers travelling up Cleeve Hill was at odds with the poem quoted in my last article. He thundered, “And this I know, that the roads, and fields, and pathways, leading to the emporium of vice and folly, are strewn with the victims of vice and vicious excess.”

THE DIRECTORY | LOCAL HISTORY He also declared that down in the town, prostitution, licentiousness, drunkenness and violence were openly found on the streets. But worst of all was gambling, with its devastating effects on the town’s lower orders. To ignore these problems was not good enough. Close challenged his congregation to go out and stop the races - not that they did! The sermon caused uproar around the town and a backlash appeared almost immediately. The editor of the Gloucester and Cheltenham Herald condemned Close for gross exaggeration. Another critic, Geoffrey Wildgoose, obviously a pseudonym, argued that the problem of drink was a thousand times more serious and that any mass meeting of people could give rise to abuses and evil. So should Close’s packed church services therefore be banned? What about King George IV, head of the Church of England but also an ardent race-goer? In another attack, Vindex condemned the vicar, “Let the magistrates, and not the clergy, sort out vice.” he wrote.

No doubt such arguments provided interesting and even amusing reading for the literary classes of the town, both residents and visitors. For us they provide a fascinating insight into the concerns of Cheltenham nearly two hundred years ago, but in reality the controversy had little effect upon the races themselves. It was only as spas fell out of fashion that the races on Cleeve Hill finally faded away in 1842. Francis Close moved to become Dean of Carlisle in 1856; his name still commemorated by Dean Close School. - David Aldred

ESSENTIAL FATS FOR VEGETARIANS Essential fats are so defined as they are vital for, but cannot be made by the human body and therefore we must receive them through our diet. Flaxseeds are the most concentrated plant source of the omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids are considered heart-healthy nutrients that also have anti-inflammatory properties. A great recipe that incorporates flaxseeds is given below:
Linseed flapjacks 280g butter 70g syrup (maple/golden/agave) 210g soft brown sugar 280g porridge oats 187g ground linseed/flaxseed meal Warm and melt the butter with the syrup. Then mix in the sugar, oats and ground linseed meal. Spread into 12”x 8” tray and bake for 20 minutes (approx) at 160°c (fan oven) until lightly browned.
Linseed/flaxseed can be purchased from supermarkets or healthstores and ground in a coffee grinder.
Back Pain Back pain is a debilitating condition which is said to affect seven out of ten adults at some point in their lives. It’s often difficult for the individual to say exactly what caused the problem. However typical triggers include • standing, sitting or bending down for long periods • lifting, pushing or pulling loads that are too heavy • bending from your back instead of your knees and hips • falling or tripping up • stress or anxiety meaning your muscles are tense • being overweight • generally having poor posture More serious back conditions may be unrelated to any of these factors however. A slipped disc, osteoporosis or a fracture are extremely painful and will need medical attention, but are fortunately quite rare.
Although you might recognise the cause of your back pain and resolve to avoid the triggers in the future, in the short term relief will be the highest priority. The first thing to remember is that bed rest can actually aggravate low back pain, so only go to bed in order to sleep. You should stay active and continue your daily routine as normally as you can. Relief can often be gained by applying hot or cold packs, or using an over-the-counter gel that contains pain relief or has anti-inflammatory properties. A normal painkiller (aspirin, paracetamol or ibuprofen) will also be very effective so do take these as often as recommended. Finally, although on-going severe pain will need a visit to your GP, if your back or neck problem has occurred as a result of a strain or a bad sleeping position, many physiotherapists will be able to see you the same day and will be able to offer advice to prevent a reoccurrence of the problem.

These are our Chiropractor’s tips for staying pain free. DONT’S 1. Don’t spend hours at one activity – fatigued muscles increase injury risk. 2. Don’t move heavy pots alone. 3. Don’t bend double to work at ground level – this strains lumbar muscles and ligaments. 4. Avoid bending while twisting. 5. Don’t carry a very heavy watering can in one arm. 6. Don’t use shears or secateurs for long periods of time – we see many shoulder, elbow and wrist injuries from overdoing this. DO’S 1. Have more than one different job on the go at once - alternating between them spreads the strain between different muscles. 2. Do jobs using both sides of your body evenly, where possible e.g. try digging from both sides. 3. When working at ground level try squatting, or
kneeling on one knee. Use a kneeling pad, alternate knees and avoid stretching forwards too far. 4. Carry two part-filled watering cans (or buckets) so that your body is balanced. 5. Use safe steps for higher jobs (e.g. overhead pruning), don’t work with your arms elevated – this can cause neck, shoulder and arm injuries. 6. To lift heavier weights, try pulling your low abdomen backwards towards your spine and tensing your pelvic floor muscles at the same time. This gives your spine better stability. Keep your spine straight. 7. If you are prone to back problems, consider raised beds 8. How robots, lasers and gadgets can take the drudgery out of DIY When we were little, we thought that by the time we grew up we’d have robots and lasers. We were right, but the lasers and robots aren’t where we thought they would be. Instead of frying our enemies we’re using them to hang pictures, vacuum the dining room and mow the lawn. Today, even our tools are becoming high-tech.
GettinG it StraiGht Your local DIY emporium probably has more lasers than Darth Vader’s Death Star. There are laser spirit levels, laser range finders, laser tape measures and there are even jigsaws that use lasers to show you where to cut. If you’d rather not spend more than £20 on a spirit level, why not install one on your phone? The free iHandy Carpenter Level for Apple’s iPhone uses your phone’s built-in gyroscope to tell you whether something’s flat. It isn’t as accurate as a real spirit level, but if you only need a quick guide then you can’t argue with free. Don’t have an iPhone? Spirit Level Pro does the same thing on Google-powered Android phones such as the HTC Desire.
Paint With eaSe You wouldn’t expect paint companies to make gadgets, but they do: Dulux has the PaintPod, and Hammerite has the MetalMaster. Both promise to make DIY easier. The £69 PaintPod is a closed system that sends just enough paint to the integrated roller, and it automatically cleans itself when you’re finished. It works fairly well and vastly reduces the mess most of us make when we’re repainting the house. Hammerite’s MetalMaster isn’t so successful. It’s an electrostatic paint gun that costs around £50 and promises to take the drudgery out of painting metal such as furniture, railings and so on. However, a quick scan of review sites such as reviewcentre.com paints a fairly sad picture, with customers complaining that it takes longer than a paintbrush and isn’t particularly well made.

robot home helP The trouble with multi-tools is that they still expect you to do the work. Wouldn’t it be great if you could get robots to do the DIY for you? We’re not quite there yet, but there are plenty of robots to help around the house. Robot vacuum cleaners such as iRobot’s Roomba and Samsung’s Navibot have dropped below the £400 mark - although like Daleks, they don’t do stairs - and if you really don’t like mowing the lawn Husquvarna’s robot lawnmower, the Automower, starts at around £1,099.

Five Big Cool French Cars There’s something about big French cars that’s rather cool. They’re not usually huge sales hits in the UK, but a combination of quirky styling and laid back comfort make them attractive buys. There are some things you’ll have to put up with though: Some have residual values that lose money faster than Greece, reliability can be slightly disappointing and some people will laugh at you. But not us – we’ll salute you as you waft by with a whiff of diesel, floating along on a bed of air suspension. Here, we pick our five favourites.
Citroen DS Big French cars don’t get more iconic than the incredible DS. Citroen sold nearly 1.5m of them during its 20-year production run between 1955 and 1975. It was packed with futuristic technology such as selfleveling suspension and directional headlights, but it’s those stylish looks that make it really cool. A decent DS will cost you around £30k now.
Renault Vel Satis The Vel Satis was an un-deniable sales flop – even Renault’s top brass admit it (http://aol. it/eUQ9mt) – but that, in our eyes, makes it even more desirable. At launch its price put a lot of people off, but we think the unique design, spacious interior and silky diesel engine

make it a worthwhile purchase. And the fact you can pick them up for just £2k now makes them very attractive!
Citroen SM Citroen has a habit of producing wacky cars, so when it teamed up with Maserati to build the SM in 1970, the result was always going to be bonkers. The SM didn’t only look amazing but was packed with tech, including speedsensitive steering and directional headlights. Maserati took care of the engine, slotting a V6 unit under the bonnet, and the French firm sorted the styling – the collaboration resulted in the creation of a classic.

But what we really love about the C6 is the looks – the dramatic nose and unique rear mark it out against German rivals and makes buying one a real statement.

Working from home Larry No-Mates by Ted Bruning It feels like a long time since I had any colleagues. Well, it’s four-and-a-half years, to be precise; so yes, it is quite a long time since I had any colleagues. But is that a good thing or a bad thing? I have always maintained – and it’s not a particularly original thought – that the pleasure you derive from your job really derives from those you work with. Whatever you do, from the ludicrously cushy to the back-breakingly hard (but barring the wilder extremes – I’m not talking rock-breaking in Siberia here), you soon start to take it for granted. I’ve been a journalist for many years, and the work has always been interesting with a fair few perks, mainly in the form of subsidised travel and lavish dinners thrown in. Not so much now as when I was in the brewing trade press; but I still get the odd trip hither and yon and a few days in Brittany or Belgium now and again do relieve the monotony. It’s work, and that’s that. You come to take money for granted, too, whether you’re just making ends meet like me or raking in obscene piles of moolah like, say, a banker (boo hiss!). But rich or poor (or poor-ish, at any rate), people in my experience tend to structure their lives according to their expectations and once they’ve settled into a means-related pattern, and always assuming a modicum of security, money becomes a secondary issue. Colleagues, to me, are the one thing you can’t take for granted. Some of them you’ll hate. Some of them you’ll love. (Taking either of these to extremes, however, is not advisable!) Some of them you’ll gladly share a few bevvies and a good gossip with down the pub after work. Some of them, on the other hand – you only have

to glimpse them in the office boozer and you’re heading straight for the bus stop. Of course if you have no colleagues, you have no irritants. The one with the irritating laugh. The one with the irritating cough or sneeze. The one with the irritating opinions. You have no enemies, either: Louise from marketing isn’t constantly cosying up to the boss and plotting to subjugate your department to hers. And, of course, you have no meetings. But you don’t get the good ones, either. Not just the after-work pint buddy, but the bloke who knows all about cars and advises you authoritatively against buying a five-year-old Kia. The one who knows just how you like your coffee. The one who’s recovered from the cold you’ve just caught and can tell you exactly how long it’s likely to last and what remedy he/she found particularly efficacious. The one whose wedding you went to, and who came to yours. No, on balance colleagues are a good thing. Even the ones you loathe serve to make your day less grey. If you’ve got them, if you’re still officebound and haven’t yet experienced the glorious freedom that comes with working from home, cherish them. Forgive them their trespasses (within reason, that is). And if you don’t have them, if you’ve taken that leap into the workingfrom-home dark, join something. Whether it’s the Communist Party or the local amateur operatic society or (as in my case) the Rose & Crown Supporters’ Club, it’s a great comfort to know that when you’ve turned the computer off and had your tea, you have your ration of human contact to look forward to. Because if you don’t have colleagues, you can always have friends...

Colour Confidence by Katherine Sorrell
This season’s most fashionable colours for interiors are strong and bold: daring blacks and metallics, vivid citruses and a range of sorbet-like Fifties shades. Yet colour can be complicated: stray away from safe neutrals and who hasn’t ended up in a fog of indecision? Our guide to using colour will help you avoid clashes and select the shades that work best for you. Colour is a hugely dynamic tool, affecting the way we feel in a powerful, albeit often subconscious, way. And we each have our own feelings about colour, so that one person’s warm and intimate room is another’s nightmare of brash, clashing shades. All of which makes using colour a rather daunting undertaking. But never fear: there are some simple guidelines to follow. Painting a room a new colour is a quick, easy and inexpensive way to introduce a fresh look. If you’re not sure where to start, there’s a wealth of inspiration to be found in books or magazines, and the paint manufacturers themselves can be a great help, whether in the form of brochures showing their colours in action, a website with the

facility to paint a virtual room or colour cards that demonstrate which colours work best together. If you’re wary of using too many different colours, but would nevertheless like to introduce some contrasts, a good rule of thumb is that darker and lighter shades of the same colour are always good together (simply look vertically up and down the paint charts). So far so good. Then, to narrow your choices down, you’ll want to consider the colours of your existing furnishings, the practicalities of how you live (darkish colours are useful in a busy hallway which might suffer from knocks and mud splatters, for example) and the architecture of your property. The latter informs not just the suitability of certain colours – perhaps historic colours for older properties, for example – but also their shades, as you may be able to get away with bolder and/or darker colours in large and light rooms.

THE DIRECTORY | HOMES & GARDENS stairways and landings are linking areas; when you stand in them you may be able to see a number of different rooms, so you should consider how their colours will work together. As a general guideline, restful colours, such as pale blues, lilacs and pinks, often work well in bedrooms, and bolder shades in dining rooms: red is a classic choice, in particular. In a hallway you could make a strong statement with a vibrant colour that introduces the house to visitors, or opt for something paler that will maximise the sense of space. Conventional colours for bathrooms are watery blues and greens, but there’s no reason why you shouldn’t opt for something completely different. Colours for living rooms should generally be chosen to work around the existing furnishings – you might pick a colour from a favourite cushion, vase or painting, for example; and the same goes for kitchens, where you’ll already have cabinets and worktops that will dominate a scheme. Finally, in children’s bedrooms and playrooms you’ll probably want to use a mix of fun, bright colours that are lively and stimulating. Experimenting with paint colour is essential, as it can be difficult to get it right first time. Always paint sheets of white card with your chosen samples and tape them up around a room, to observe in different lights (what looks like a lovely purple in daylight, for example, can become black after sunset). In a living room you’ll want the colours to work in both daylight and artificial light, whereas in bedrooms and dining rooms it is more important that they look attractive at night-time. Take care with colours that are on the edge between two different shades, as these change more than any others in different light conditions, and while this can be dramatic, it may not be quite what you expect. And be careful to buy the right undercoat – it really does affect the end result. If the thought of colour everywhere just sounds a bit too much, there are several ways in which it can be introduced in more subtle ways. You could paint just one wall a strong shade, for example, with the others in co-ordinating neutrals. Or how about some beautiful wallpaper, an oversized stencilled motif or easy-to-apply wall stickers?

Alternatively, keep walls white or very pale and add colour elsewhere. Changing a duvet cover or a tablecloth, for example, will instantly transform an otherwise neutral bedroom or dining room, while new cushions, vases and pictures will do the same for a living room. Get handy and paint a chest of drawers or a side table, or make a loose cover for a sofa or chair: think laterally and this is where, for not too much effort and expense, it’s possible to ring the changes and make colour work creatively for you. It’s as simple as black and white.

t’s great to be joining you on a regular basis, especially when the subject is gardening! I’ll be giving you some hints and tips for what to be doing in your own gardens, letting you know what I’m up to in mine, and in the process hopefully inspiring you to get out in to the garden more, enjoy everything it has to offer, and achieve some pretty impressive results yourself May is one of the fastest moving months in the gardening year, the time when plants just keep on and on growing and developing. New transplants, recently allowed to enjoy the ‘great outdoors’ after an early start in a greenhouse, wait a week or two and then POW! they’re off, and showing you their potential. Old established garden friends, their roots well down in the soil, put on new leaves, stem growth, flower buds maybe even flowers and enjoy the fact that whilst the weather has warmed up, they’ve not yet been hit by growth-restricting drier conditions of summer. It’s a month when it is hard not to feel a regular desire to grab a trowel (or perhaps a fork, spade or cultivator) and get out there and enjoy yourself while at the same time giving the garden and its plants the TLC that’s deserved. What better way to spend an hour or two….or perhaps even a day or two? With the massive surge in interest in growing your own vegetables, vegetable plants and seeds are available just about everywhere, so there are no excuses for not giving it a go. Even if time is short or space at a premium, it really is worth growing a few crops – the feeling of self-satisfaction when you make that first harvest is just SO good....not to mention the taste of the crops themselves. Try your hand at climbing French beans, dwarf French beans, runner beans, carrots, salad leaves, spinach or peas. I also adore home grown sweetcorn; this too can be sown direct now, but make sure you sow the seed in a square e.g. four rows of four seeds, formed in to a square (it is a wind pollinated crop and this is the way to get good, well-filled cobs). It is a bit late to raise your own courgettes, squash, tomatoes or peppers from seed, but there should be plenty of young plants available in local nurseries or garden centres – just make sure you buy a variety of tomato or pepper suitable for growing outdoors if you don’t have a greenhouse (the label should make this clear). It is worth spending a few minutes to check flower beds and borders, however small or large, as at this time of year they are a hive of activity.

THE DIRECTORY | HOMES & GARDENS I just have masses of twiggy pea-sticks (well branched prunings will do) and have driven them in around the edges of several herbaceous perennials. So many of these lovely plants are inclined to flop disastrously later in the year, but supported subtly now, they’ll remain upright. As I do this I always spot a few other things that need seeing to as well. All the lovely lush growth means that (in my garden at least) slugs and snails are having a fantastic time devastating the tender new leaves. When I put new plants in the ground I scatter oyster shell around the soil beneath the plants. It is readily available from local suppliers of chicken feed, and is by far the best barrier to slugs and snails that I know....and bought in this way, it does not cost a fortune either. Early aphid (greenfly and blackfly) infestations are also likely to be building up now, and dealt with promptly they are unlikely to cause too much damage – a gentle but firm squash between finger and thumb works a treat, or for those
less partial to direct action like this, spray with a fatty-acid or soap-based spray late in the day when bees are no longer about. With most of the gardening year ahead feeding makes sense too. So whether you have a well-stocked compost heap, or prefer to use fertilisers from the garden centre, apply them now so that your flowers, fruits and veg have a chance to make best use of them. Golden Rules: • Make sure that seedlings and young plants get enough natural light. • Gradually harden off young plants before planting them out. • In warmer areas, start to plant out more tender crops, but protect with cloches at first. • Tomatoes in containers need regular feeding with a liquid tomato food. • Treat yourself to some summer bedding for a really lively terracecontainer, but check the forecast carefully before planting them out.

Spice of Life - Turmeric Turmeric comes from the root, or rhizome, of Curcuma domestica, a plant related to ginger. The roots are boiled and dried for over a week before being ground into the familiar bright yellow powdered spice. A native of South East Asia, turmeric has been used from ancient times as dye and a condiment. As a dye it is used in a similar way to saffron but in culinary usage, the two shouldn’t be interchanged. As a natural dye it is used in Hindu rituals and to colour holy robes. Warm, earthy and aromatic turmeric powder keeps its colouring properties for an indefinite period although its flavour reduces over time. It’s used in the East and Middle East for adding colour and flavour to many dishes, particularly lamb, vegetables and curries where it is one of the main ingredients to provide colour. Medical uses are mainly for digestive problems. In some Asian countries turmeric is added to a cosmetic which is applied to impart a golden glow to the skin. In Malaysia it is made into an antiseptic ointment and studies have shown that a chemical component of turmeric is active against a form of infection called Staphlococcus aureus.

Recipe of the month Enjoy the wonderful flavour of fresh British asparagus with these deliciously simple topped toasts. To make them more substantial add some flaked smoked mackerel or ruffles of Parma ham.
Makes 6 Ready in 20 minutes
Asparagus Bruschettas 12 fresh asparagus spears, trimmed 6 thin slices crusty bread (such as sour dough) 6 tbsp good quality olive oil 1 large garlic clove, halved 225g (8oz) goats’ cheese Handful of rocket leaves Salt and freshly ground black pepper Page 46
1. Half fill a large frying pan with water and bring to the boil. Add the asparagus spears and simmer for 3-4 minutes until just tender. Drain well and refresh under cold running water. 2. Brush the slices of bread on both sides with some of the olive oil. Place the slices on a hot cast-iron griddle pan and cook for 1-2 minutes on each side until just crisp and lightly charred in places. If you don’t have a griddle pan then simply grill the toasts. 3. Rub the cut garlic cloves all over the hot toasts (this imparts a mild garlic flavour to the toasts). Spread the goats’ cheese over the toasts. 4. Arrange the asparagus spears on top of the cheese and add a few rocket leaves to each. Drizzle over the rest of the olive oil. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and serve immediately.

Like all animals, however, they need a level of commitment to give them a good quality of life. With a bit of luck and suitable care a rabbit can survive from six to ten years. Like us, they need a healthy, high fibre diet, lots of exercise and plenty of love and affection. Handling your rabbit daily is the key to keeping it tame. They are sociable creatures that need a lot of company and for this reason many people keep them as house pets. If this is not for you, think about getting a pair to keep together outside but make sure they are neutered first. A healthy rabbit will have bright, clear eyes, a glossy coat and a clean, dry tail. Any change in these basic signs can be an indication of illness. Two main diseases affect rabbits: Myxomatosis and Viral Haemorrhagic Disease, known as VHD for short. Both are spread by infected animals such as wild rabbits and blood sucking insects like fleas and mosquitoes. Both are potentially fatal conditions which are difficult to treat and cause a
lot of suffering. The good news is you can vaccinate against them; The Myxomatosis jab is first available at 6 weeks old and then a booster is given every 6 –12 months. VHD injections can be given from 5 weeks old and will need to boosted annually. Unfortunately the injections have to be given 2 weeks apart but it’s a small inconvenience and one of the most effective things you can do to protect your pet’s health.

Sunset on Everest You have to earn your first view of the mighty Everest range. From the Lukla airstrip, a short flight from Kathmandu, it takes a day and a half, trekking through pine forests, past lodges framed in dahlias and rhododendrons, across dizzying bridges and up the long steep spur of the Namche Hill. Now and then, you flatten yourself against the cliff face to let pack animals and porters scrape past. Far below, the foaming waters of the Bhote Kosi roar through an invisible gorge. At last, the pretty Sherpa town of Namche Bazaar appears, clinging to the very edge of the precipice, all pastel roofs and frilly awnings, prayer flags wavering like giant plumes and stepped alleyways where men carve Buddhist scriptures on the boulders and trekkers bargain for turquoise and Tibetan rugs. At 3340 metres, in the Everest National Park, Namche is the place to acclimatise for a day or two and enjoy glorious mountain views, here the holy summit of Khumbila, there the fluted walls of Thamserku or the snowfields of Kongde and on the horizon, the dark windswept cone of Everest. Spring is the best time for rhododendrons, autumn for clear views. From Namche, Bazaar, it is a fairly easy stretch to Tengboche, the most sacred monastery in the Khumbu region, perched all alone on a wooded ridge. Boy monks scrub their laundry at the gate, chanting drifts from the temple, punctuated by cymbals and drums, and the twin peaks of Ama Dablam rise hauntingly, so close you could almost touch them. Beyond, the land is bleak and you pass only a few hamlets with tiny potato fields and yak dung drying for fuel on stone walls. Sometimes, wild Himalayan goats bound on the slopes and pheasants in iridescent rainbow colours peck on the edge of the trail. Onto the forlorn village of Dingboche then Lobuche, past myriad stone chortens lined up on the pass, each one a shrine to someone who died in these parts. Now it is high time to eat garlic soup to thin the blood and fill up on energy food, pancakes, potato bread, vegetable rolls the size of a family pie. After a week of toiling up and down slopes and one last scramble over a moraine, anyone reasonably fit can reach Gorak Shep, the original base camp at

Namche Bazaar and Kongde Mountain
over 5000 metres, now with a few lodges, tucked in a moonscape of tortured land and ice with gaping crevasses and the great cascade of the Khumbu Icefall. Lhotse, Nuptse, Pumori, Choyu, mountains rise in a magnificent amphitheatre across the Tibetan border, but Everest remains stubbornly out of sight, hidden by a lower but closer ridge. So, to set eyes on the panorama of a lifetime, you have to climb even higher and tackle the seemingly easy but breath-taking, knee-jerking Kalapatar, the Black Rock above Gorak Shep, towering at 5623 metres. Slowly, Everest appears above Nuptse, rising higher and higher, and when the sun dips in the west, the whole mountain rumbles and groans as huge blocks of ice crash down the slopes. All around the peaks come to life, shimmering pink and gold in the dying light. Suddenly, sharp as a knife, darkness falls right across the land but for a long time, on the roof of the world, Everest continues to glow, a lonely beacon in a starlit sky. By Solange Hando
