A SUMMER OF MEMORIES This month’s editor’s note comes from me, Sarah. I work with Anne at Glos Directories and have done so for several years, so I thought it’s time for me to introduce myself to you, our lovely readers. My goodness, it’s August already! As the schools have broken up for their long summer break, I’m hoping we keep this lovely weather so us parents and kids can make the most of it. It can be hard to find things to do to keep children entertained, particularly if you work, but a planned day out is always great to have in the diary. How about the Tewkesbury Classic Vehicle Festival, for example? It takes place on 19th August, raises vital funds for charity and makes for a great family day out. Enter our competition on page 9 for a chance to win some free tickets. When I was a child (a long time ago now!), I used to be sent out in the morning after
a hearty breakfast and was told not to come back until tea time. Oh, the things we got up to! Building dens, climbing trees and swimming in the river to name but a few. Many a time I would come home to my mum looking bedraggled with scratches on my elbows and knees. Those memories will stay with me forever. Whilst children today are often drawn to their Xbox or PS4, it really doesn’t take that much to distract them if there’s something better to do. Take a look at the What’s On section in the back of this magazine for some ideas on what you could do with your family this summer. We’ll see you in September when it’ll be nearly Chri… (no, I’m not going to say it!).
Sarah Dingwall
Congratulations! To Bridget Groom, who is the lucky winner of the family ticket to the Cotswold Farm Park. Have a great time! Thanks for everyone who took part in our competition. Sorry you didn't win on this occasion, but we've got a little something to cheer you up – take the children to the Farm Park free of charge during August with this voucher:
Replicated vouchers will not be accepted. No cash alternative. Cannot be used with any other offers, including online tickets. One use only. Valid until 02/09/2018.

Short Story
Stanley’s Toenails By Jackie Brewster “Did you bring the sausages?” Peggy whispered, opening the caravan door. “Course,” Susan said, “are you going to let me in?” Susan was not in the best of moods. Her mum and Stanley were at the seaside for their honeymoon, and this was the third time she’d had to drive over to see them. “What’s up this time?” she sighed. “It sounded pretty urgent.” “It’s him.” Peggy nodded towards Stanley who was hunched over a jigsaw. “He’s got something wrong with his toenails.” “What sort of something?” Susan said. “They’re a funny colour.” Peggy lit the grill. “Are you ready for a sausage cob, Stanley?” “I was born ready,” Stanley said, rubbing his belly. “Let’s have a look at these toenails first, shall we?” Susan said, “Pop your feet up on the couch Stanley.” With much grunting Stanley obliged. At the sight of his toenails, Susan grimaced. Every nail was the colour of creosote. “That is odd,” she agreed. “Have you dropped something on them?” “I don’t recall. I woke up like this.” He wiggled his toes. “They don’t hurt or nothing.” Susan studied the toenails and frowned. She reluctantly gave them a sniff. She 6
touched one with her fingertip. It was sticky. “Thank you, Stanley,” she said firmly. ”Mother, I’d like a word in private.” “There isn’t anywhere private,” Peggy said. “It’s a static.” “Let’s step outside,” Susan insisted. Peggy tutted and removed her apron. “Are they going to drop off?” Stanley called as Susan shut the door behind them. Once out of earshot, Susan turned to Peggy. “Three times you’ve dragged me out here,” she said. “What’s all this about?” “That first time I’d forgotten my readers,” Peggy said. “And the second time?” Susan said. “When you thought there was a mouse?” “Just because you couldn’t find it didn’t mean there wasn’t one,” Peggy said. “Maybe,” Susan nodded, “but can you tell me why Stanley has got brown sauce on his toenails?” “Sauce?” Peggy feigned surprise. “I’m guessing you put it there,” Susan said. “Why would I do a thing like that?” “Is someone keeping an eye on the sausages?” Stanley popped his head out the window.
“They’re lovely Susan, from the butcher’s on the parade.”
“So?” Susan said. “He liked them so much he keeps asking for more,” Peggy moaned, “and there isn’t even a butcher’s on the parade.”
“Just give them a turn, Stan,” Peggy called irritably.
“Mum, you’ve got to own up,” Susan sighed.
“What does he mean – the butcher’s on the parade?” Susan said. “I brought those sausages just like you asked me to, like I’ve done every time.”
“He’ll think he’s married a compulsive liar,” Peggy said. Susan laughed. “He’d be right, wouldn’t he?”
“Hush,” Peggy whispered, “Stanley doesn’t know.”
“I’ll tell him the butcher has sold out,” Peggy offered, “but what about his toenails?”
“Don’t tell me you’ve dragged me all the way out here just to bring sausages?” Susan folded her arms. “Don’t be cross, Susie.” Peggy patted her daughter’s hand. “When we got here I needed a bit of time to myself, so I went for a walk. And when I got back I said I’d been to fetch sausages. I didn’t want to offend him, you see. I just cooked up the sausages I’d brought from home.”
CPAVING G &
“Have him paddle in the sea,” Susan suggested. “It’ll wash off and he’ll think he’s cured.” “You’re a lifesaver.” Peggy gave her daughter a squeeze. “I’d better get back to Stanley’s sausages.” “You’re welcome Mum,” Susan smiled. “Don’t forget to ask him if he wants brown sauce.”

Crab Parcels Makes 20
Ready in 40 minutes
These crisp filo pastry parcels with a crab and ginger filling make a tasty seafood starter for a special dinner or can be served as nibbles with refreshing drinks on a hot summer’s evening.
• 1 x 230g can crab meat, drained and flaked • 1 tsp grated fresh root ginger • 2 tbsp freshly chopped coriander • 2 spring onions, finely chopped
Cut the sheets of filo pastry into twenty 15cm squares. Take one square and brush lightly with water then top with a second pastry square. Place a spoonful of the crab mixture in the centre of the square. Brush the edges lightly with water and gather them together to enclose the filling and form a moneybag-shaped parcel.
• 8-10 sheets of filo pastry (see Tip)
Repeat with the rest of the pastry squares and filling to make 10 parcels in total. Half fill a large deep pan with vegetable oil and heat until a small piece of filo pastry dropped in the hot fat sizzles and browns in 20 seconds. Deep fry the parcels, in 2-3 batches, for 2-3 minutes until crisp and golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper.
• Vegetable oil for deep frying
Serve warm with sweet chilli sauce for dipping and garnished with shredded spring onion.
• 1 tbsp lime juice • Freshly-ground black pepper
• 4 tbsp sweet chilli sauce • Shredded spring onion, to garnish 8
Mix the crab meat, ginger, coriander, chopped spring onions and lime juice in a bowl. Season lightly with freshly-ground black pepper.
TIP Filo pastry sheets can vary in size so you may
need a few more if they are small. Keep the squares covered with a clean damp cloth or kitchen paper when filling, to prevent the pastry drying and tearing.

KEEPING SAFE AT THE BEACH THIS SUMMER Most beachgoers will have an enjoyable and relaxing time when they visit the beach this summer. So when something goes wrong, who can help? RNLI Lifeboat Volunteers can respond within minutes, and often save lives close to the shore. But sometimes, at the beach, seconds count. This is where RNLI Lifeguards play a vital role, they can respond instantly if dangers develop. A good lifeguard's work is preventative; many lives have already been saved by their vigilance. When you’re heading to a beach, we urge you to visit a Lifeguarded Beach. Make sure you and your family have a safe and fun trip to the coast. If lifeguards are on patrol, then you’ll need to know your flags: RED AND YELLOW FLAG Lifeguarded area. Safest area to swim/bodyboard. BLACK AND WHITE CHEQUERED FLAGS For surfboards, stand-up paddleboards, kayaks and other non-powered craft. Launch and recovery area for kitesurfers and windsurfers. Never swim or bodyboard here. RED FLAG
A NEW LOOK FOR OUTLOOK A group to bring sight-impaired people of Gloucestershire together is getting a makeover and looking out for new members. Outlook enables people with a sight impairment to experience a wide range of social and sporting activities. From pub quizzes to rock climbing, Outlook does it all. Our most popular events include bowling, meals out and walks in the park. Although the group aims to be a place for sight-impaired folk to get together, Outlook is primarily about making friends and having a good time, regardless of how much we can or can't see. People with a sight problem often feel isolated, so we want to break down the barriers to socialising with an everyone's-welcome attitude. Whether you're adventurous or prefer something more relaxed, the group could be a great place to meet some outgoing, fun-loving people. For more information, contact Megan Paul on meganpaul12@outlook.com or 07479 363027.
Danger! Never go in the water under any circumstances when the red flag is flying. During offshore or strong wind conditions. Never use inflatables when the windsock is flying. During this hot weather, you are reminded of the dangers of swimming in Rivers, Lakes, Quarries, etc. The water is very cold and jumping in can cause “Cold Water Shock” which is a killer. Overbury Bowling Club win South Worcestershire Triples Gala Day In glorious June sunshine, eight teams from four local bowling clubs convened in Aston Somerville for the annual South Worcestershire Triples Gala Day. The competition consists of each team playing five short games against opponents drawn at random. The Gala Day is a highlight of the season, complete with trophies and cash prizes, so clubs aim to field their "best" triple to maximise their chance to claim victory. In their first game, Overbury A secured a narrow victory of 5-4 against Aston B and then went on to win all five of their games to win the tournament with the maximum 10 points. Snapping at their heels were Bredon A
THANK YOU FROM THE FRIENDS OF BISHOP'S CLEEVE PRIMARY ACADEMY Thank you so much to all of you who came and supported our Summer Fete on 16th June; we hope you enjoyed the day. We are overjoyed to say that £3,550 was raised from the event – a fantastic total! These funds will be used to help the school provide resources and activities to benefit every child at the school. As always there are a huge number of THANK YOUs for making the fete successful: • Tesco, for donating the ice-cream and cold drinks • Class People, Cheltenham, for helping staff the BBQ • Sensei Amanda Wright, for the Jujutsu demonstration • Mrs Powell, for the school choir performance 14
and Evesham A, both with 9 points, Evesham A securing the runners-up trophy on shots difference. Geoff Hinton, the SWT organiser, said: "Congratulations go to Overbury A who won all 5 of their games". New members, both young and senior, are always welcome to join in this very social and sporting activity. The club has both equipment and qualified coaches to get the inexperienced up and running quickly. For more information, contact Overbury Bowling Club at info@overburybowling.net or one of the club officials listed on www.overburybowling.net • Miss Bishop, for the musical theatre club performance • All the local businesses that generously donated prizes for the raffle • The army of parents, families and staff who helped in many ways - without them the fete couldn’t happen. We are so grateful to everyone who gave their time and contributed to the day. We wish all children good luck in their next school year and hope everyone enjoys their summer holidays.

LETHAL LEATHERJACKETS By Pippa Greenwood
Daddy-longlegs or crane-flies are starting to hatch out now – you may have seen their dangly-legged dancing as they get into your house, clattering against the windows and the lights? Maybe they are not your favourite creatures – indeed, many shy away from them! But these are the adults and it is their young – known as leatherjackets – that really cause grief in gardens. If your lawn has yellowing patches on it or you’ve noticed it being ripped up in th e last few weeks, chances are leatherjackets are to blame, and it is likely that the problem will get a lot worse. So what happens? Well, leatherjackets feed on the roots of grass (and can also cause problems in flowerbeds and vegetable plots) and this may cause the plants they attack to be weakened and even die back; worst of all, these juicy larvae are an extremely tasty snack if you happen to be an animal such as a crow, rook, magpie, badger or a fox. So as soon as there are leatherjackets in your garden, these animals come along in search of 16
them, ripping up your lawn or excavating beds and borders in the process. Lawns are usually worst affected and can be devastated in a matter of days. What is the best way to check if you have them? Early in the evening, water a couple of the yellowed patches really thoroughly and do the same with a patch that has been ripped up. Next, cover these areas in black polythene weighed down with a couple of bricks or similar. A double layer of black bin liners will do fine or, better still, use an opened-out plastic compost bag as this is particularly thick plastic. Next morning, lift the polythene and you’ll see the pests on the soil or lawn surface. So how do you know leatherjackets are to blame? Leatherjackets are even less goodlooking than their parents: greyish-brown, tubular, legless, up to about 4.5cm long and so nearly transparent that you can often see inside them, lunch and all. You can remove a good number by repeating this black polythene trick –
then, collect up the pests and put them on the bird table where they’ll be a useful source of free and nutritious bird food. If you want a much quicker, easier and more thorough solution then I suggest you use the biological control nematode ‘Nemasys Leatherjacket Killer’. It is quick and easy to apply – I just use a watering can and water it onto the affected area shortly after I’ve seen the first daddylonglegs and when soil conditions are right, so usually late August to late October. As long as you keep the area moist for about three or four weeks, it works a treat – and is even safe if you have a dog, pet rabbit or other pets (or kids!) who use the lawn. So how can you get hold of this? There are two pack sizes available,
suitable for standard lawns or those with a very large area to cover but you won’t find them in garden centres as they have a short shelf life. You can, however, find out more and order them from www. pippagreenwood.com/products in the Protect Your Plants section. We’ll send them out by first class post in an insulated envelope for you to show those pesky leatherjackets who’s the boss! Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood. com and you’ll find some great gardening items: Nemaslug, green controls for leatherjackets, chafer grubs, ants and greenfly, plus garden plant supports, raised bed kits, Easy-Tunnels, gardening tools, Grower Frames, signed books and more! You can even book Pippa for a gardening talk at your local gardening club.

There will be prizes for the best dressed Superhero and Mini Hero whilst we even encourage Super Pooches to come along and take part. The race will begin at 10am. 20
You can register online at www.lincfund.org/ event/superhero-fun-run/ or call the LINC team on 0300 422 4422 for a registration form. Adults cost £7.50, Children £2.50 and Super Pooches £1. The Leukaemia and Intensive Chemotherapy Fund (LINC) supports local blood cancer patients in every way possible so your participation in this event will go directly towards helping patients here in Gloucestershire. As part of the major refurbishment of the isolation side rooms on Rendcomb Ward, LINC is currently raising money to purchase eight new reclining chairs. Sponsorship forms are available and we would encourage you to help us raise as much money as possible. We do hope that you can join us and become a LINC superhero!

Home Products Coastal Chic
By Katherine Sorrell
Bring the seaside vibe to your home with a look that is light and bright, fresh and relaxed. Upside-down coastal house interior, designed by Stephanie Dunning of Dunning & Everard: 01722 710 608; dunningandeverard. com, photographed by David Parmiter.
Small seagull tea cosy, £36, Poppy Treffry: 01736 369 247; poppytreffry. co.uk.

Natural wood small bird ornament, £11.50, Gisela Graham London: 020 7708 6396; giselagraham. co.uk.
Get the look: SunShine Style • A calm and relaxed vibe is the essence of coastal chic, and colour and texture go a long way towards achieving this. Go all white everywhere, or else think pale paintwork with accents of grey, beige and – of course – blue. Add some touches of natural wood for a lovely contrast. • Bring the outside in by including gorgeous natural elements. Driftwood is perfect, as are shells and coral (ethical, of course). Add some rope, wicker and maybe seagrass, coir or jute for a lovely contrast of textures. • It’s all about the light. Coastal homes are airy and breezy, so maximise light at the windows by hanging filmy curtains or white-painted wooden blinds, and arrange artificial lighting so that a central pendant is supplemented by a versatile selection of wall, table and floor lamps. • Choose fabrics for their crisp or floaty feel. Simplicity is key, so opt for linen, muslin and ticking, either plain or with a stripe. Bold stripes are more nautical, while barely-there stripes are more utilitarian – either way, the look is completely charming. 22
Anchor small nautical storage jar, £6.95, Coastal Home: 01208 226 340; coastalhome.co.uk. Florence large sofa in heron stripe charcoal, from £1,599, Sofa Workshop: 0808 115 0514; sofaworkshop.com. The helmsman and all equipment are provided. If you would like an entry form, please visit www.bredonvillage.com, the Bredon Facebook page or email amanda.parishoffice@talktalk.net.
More people than ever attended this popular event last year, it’s a great opportunity to meet up with friends and enjoy the atmosphere in such a beautiful location. If you’ve not been before, do come along! If you have been before we shall look forward to seeing you again. Admission remains at £2.50 for adults; under 16’s are free. This year’s lead sponsors are MT Training.
The racing obviously takes centre stage but there will also be live music provided by The ReVivals, a bottle stall, a book stall, a top Tombola, games for children and plenty of food, including a barbeque, a pig roast and a tea tent. The ever-popular cider tent will also return and if the weather is fine, Pimms and G & T will be available too.

A Sting in the Tail Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) is used by thousands of drivers to finance a car purchase, as it offers flexibility and affordability. PCP is a loan but, unlike a traditional loan, you won’t own the car at the term end (unless you choose to). This has the advantage of lower monthly payments. Determined by the dealer, the car will have a Guaranteed Minimum Future Value (GMFV) at the PCP term end. When the time comes, should the car be valued at a figure higher than this, then you will have the difference between the two figures to put down as a deposit on your next car. Sounds good. Low payments and a deposit at the end. But be aware of the PCP terms, otherwise you may get stung.
Adverts not only show the fun and affordability of owning a new car, they also show the smallprint – notably the annual mileage clause. To get the GMFV figure up, and thus the monthly payments down, the dealer wants a low mileage car at term end. A figure of 6,000 annual miles – that’s 120 miles PER WEEK – is common, which is my weekly commute. Any other driving will take you over that annual figure and the excess charge could be 8p/mile. A mid-20s driver I know signed up for a 3-year PCP with such a term. He reached the 18,000 limit in 15 months and the finance company have told him to put away at least £120 per month to cover the excess mileage fee he will incur. PCP is viable way to finance a car but, like any contract, read the small print!. By Iain Betson
