Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people
Dear Reader, Christmas and the January sales have come and gone and the cold start to the year has certainly kept us on our toes! As we head into February, we have Valentine’s Day to look forward to. Many see Valentine’s Day as a commercial gimmick and the first stumbling block for anyone who had a dietrelated New Year’s resolution! Whether you celebrate this day or not, I think it is a great way to remind ourselves to spread a bit of love to those around you. Also, the 14th falls within half term so it provides parents and grandparents with a great theme for doing some arts and crafts or baking with the children! At the start of the year, committees and fete organisers get together to put dates in the diary for future events. Please remember to let us know what you are planning and we might be able to publish your event in the magazine and share it on our social media pages for you. Happy Valentine’s Day to all our readers and thank you for supporting the local businesses within our magazines! See you back here in March. Best wishes, Vicky Muller

Cake & Bake Perfect Pancakes Whip up a classic pancake batter to celebrate Shrove Tuesday. Simply serve the traditional way with sugar and lemon juice or try one of our extra special sweet or savoury serving ideas. Makes 8 - Ready in 30 minutes plus standing time Ingredients: • 100g plain flour • Pinch of salt • 1 large egg
• 300ml milk (or milk and water mixed) • Sunflower oil or unsalted butter, for frying 1. Sift the flour into a large bowl, add the salt and make a well in the centre. Add the egg and beat with a balloon whisk, gradually drawing in some of the flour. 2. Slowly pour in the milk, whisking all the time and drawing in the rest of the flour, until you have a smooth batter which is about the consistency of single cream. 3. Stand the batter for about 30 minutes to allow the starch grains in the flour to soften and expand –this will give a lighter pancake. If the batter has thickened slightly then just whisk in a splash of milk. 4. Heat a little sunflower oil or a knob of butter in a non-stick shallow frying pan (about 20cm diameter)until almost smoking then quickly ladle in enough of the batter to thinly cover the base of the pan, swirling the pan to give an even layer. 5. Cook for 1-2 minutes until small air bubbles appear in the pancake then flip it over and cook for a further minute until golden. Repeat with the rest of the mixture, serving the pancakes as they are cooked or interleaving with baking paper and keeping warm in a low oven. Page 6
SWEET Choc ‘n’ nuts – spread warmed pancakes with chocolate and hazelnut spread then fold into quarters. Drizzle with warmed chocolate sauce and serve with toasted hazelnuts. Orange cream – heat 4tbsp thin-shred marmalade with 150ml orange juice in a frying pan and simmer for a few minutes until syrupy. Fold the pancakes and add to the pan, turning to coat in the syrup. Serve topped with whipped cream or crème fraiche. SAVOURY Cheese and bacon melts – add 2tsp dried Italian herbs to the pancake batter. Fill each cooked pancake with some grated Cheddar and 2 rashers crisply fried smoked bacon rashers. Fold over and pop in a hot oven for 10 minutes until the cheese has melted. Tuna parcels – place a spoonful of canned flaked tuna fish in the centre of each cooked pancake and top with some canned sweetcorn and chopped spring onion. Fold the pancakes to make parcels and enclose the filling. Serve with sweet chilli sauce.

Home & Interiors Fabulous Fireplaces
By Katherine Sorrell
It’s time to put another log on the fire, get cosy and snuggle up until winter is over. Our ideas will help ensure your fireplace looks as good as it makes you feel.
Improve your fIresIde décor
• The fireplace wall is often the focal point of the room, and can look amazing when treated as a feature wall, using either striking wallpaper or a paint colour that contrasts with, yet also complements, the colours used in the rest of the room. • Fireplace accessories can be quite distinctive and are usually on display, so choose pieces, whether contemporary or traditional, that co-ordinate both with your room as a whole and with each other. • Above the fireplace, add either a work of art or a mirror that is proportionate to the space. A mirror is very useful for reflecting light around the room, but don’t feel it has to be a traditional overmantel – something more contemporary may fit better with your style. • Think about what is displayed on your mantelpiece. Photographs, candles, small ornaments and vases of flowers, collections… anything goes provided it fits. A formal, symmetrical arrangement is easy to achieve and suits a traditional room, or else something more freeform can be eye-catching and intriguing. • Not using your fireplace? It can still be a great feature. Stack logs within it, prop up a framed picture, display a large ornament such as a shell, a piece of coral or antlers, set up a group of candles, or simply use the space for a display of flowers in a simple vase.
Refresh your fireplace, and the wall around it, with carefully chosen wallpaper or a fresh coat of paint. Walls: Dimpse No.277 Estate Emulsion, £43.50 for 2.5l; woodwork: Wevet No.273 Estate Eggshell, £24 for 750ml; fireplace: Mole’s Breath No.276 Estate Eggshell, £24 for 750ml; all Farrow & Ball. Perfect for kindling or newspapers, this hand-made leather bucket is made in a family co-operative in Rajasthan using natural dyes. It costs £89.95 from Decorator’s Notebook. Every ‘real’ fire needs a tool set. In wrought iron with an antiqued finish, this trio of poker, fork and grabbers will help you get the flames going on a chilly evening. Fireside tool set, £44.50, Garden Trading. If a rustic log basket isn’t your look, consider a minimal metal holder instead. Lodge round log carrier in steel, £57, Garden Trading.
Sturdy yet easily portable, this Scandinavian-designed fire screen is both smart and practical. Garden Trading Jutland fire screen in steel, £75, Black By Design. A reindeer hide is just the thing for throwing down in front of the fire. This extra-large one is a natural by-product of the meat industries in Finland and Norway, and costs £170 from The French Bedroom Company.

Time to Get Pruning by Pippa Greenwood
At this time of year the weather is often perfect for pruning and cutting back woody plants, so take advantage of the fact that deciduous trees, shrubs, hedges and climbers are now devoid of leaves and get stuck in. Here’s how to make sure your pruning will really benefit your plants: • For a small hedge or to roughly reshape a shrub, a good, sharp pair of well-oiled shears should do the job. Angle the blades to make a level trimmed surface. To make a neat and level surface when cutting the top of a hedge, use a taut string as a guide line. For large hedges consider using a powered hedge cutter or hedge trimmer, but make sure you can use it safely! • When removing stems at various heights and of varying thicknesses, use ‘loppers’, which are much better at cutting through relatively thick stems than shears or secateurs and yet also allow for accurate positioning of the cut. When cutting back branches above your head, wear protective headgear and goggles. • Secateurs are used for the most precise pruning of smaller woody stems.
Provided they are good and sharp, you can make a perfectly clean and accurate cut. Always cut to an outwardfacing bud (so that the new growth produced from that bud grows outwards). Secateurs are good for removing dead and dying stems as well as for formative pruning (where you are helping to ensure the plant grows in the direction you want it to), and for pruning to encourage flowering. • To remove larger tree branches or if you have fruit trees to prune, then a pruning saw is the perfect tool. Use a sawing action for best results and make the cut a few millimetres from the main stem to which the branch you are removing is joined. A cut like this will heal quickly and the wound will be smaller and less prone to fungal rotting. • Check the best pruning time for the plants you have in mind. Although most hedges and many shrubs can be cut back now, there are exceptions. • Some trees - mainly those in the Prunus family such as cherries, plums, apricots, damsons, peaches and nectarines - are very prone to a potentially fatal fungal
infection known as ‘silver leaf’. To reduce the likelihood of this, prune these trees in the summer unless there is no alternative. • Pruning tools should be really sharp; if blunt, the job will need more effort and may result in damage to the plant from a jagged cut or crushed stems. • Create sloping cuts whenever you can so that rain and moisture runs off (wetness encourages wood rotting), and cut close to but not on top of a bud to allow new growth without dieback - you will need to use secateurs, loppers or a saw to do this. • Stand back from time to time when pruning to check the overall appearance of the plant and judge which part to tackle next, as close up it is harder to see how your pruning is affecting the overall shape of the plant. I’m Not Sure I Did the Right Thing As I drove through town, it was sitting three cars behind me: an ANPR-equipped police car. I knew had nothing to worry about as I had stuck to the speed limits, and my car and I were both road-legal. So I just clocked it in my rear view mirror as another road user. Approaching the red lights I pulled up next to a driver who was chatting away on their phone. Even though the car was stationary, this is an offence that now carries 6 penalty points, a £200 fine and, if incurred in the first two years of gaining your licence, a disqualification too. (I assume this caveat was added as the statistics show that those aged 18-24 are three times more
likely to commit this offence.) Yet, a survey by Kwik-Fit revealed that an astonishing 43% of those questioned still fail to realise this. More worryingly 17% of those surveyed admitted to texting and 34% to taking calls when driving! It seems the message is slow to get through. When the driver next to me glanced across, I motioned behind me. Their startled look and dropping of the phone said it all. Whether the police saw them on the phone I don’t know as, at that point, the traffic moved off. On reflection I’m not sure I did the right thing - was I a Good Samaritan? Or perhaps I shouldn’t have intervened, let the law take its course and a driver learn a hard lesson that using a mobile phone behind the wheel is illegal. You decide.

Weaving world’s first knitted garden for RHS Malvern Spring Festival
A Gloucestershire widow is creating a full size knitted show garden installation at RHS Malvern Spring Festival in memory of her husband to help raise £50,000 for the hospice charity which helped care for him and to aid in her battle with anxiety and depression since his death. Clare Young, 50, from Gloucester, supported by a team of friends, crafters and community groups has started work on the full-size show garden installation for the RHS Malvern Spring Festival called the ‘Work of Heart’ garden. Clare said: “My husband Ken died at Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice in August 2015 at the age of 47. After Ken died, I found life very difficult. I was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety and my clinical psychologist suggested knitting as a way to help my symptoms. "I’ve always tried to turn all negatives into positives since Ken died, so I picked up my knitting needles. I started by creating knitted Christmas decorations and Easter Bunnies which raised £1,300 for the hospice where Ken was looked after. This was followed by installing a yarn bombed message of thanks in the hospice grounds in the May 2017 with the help of a group of friends and knitters. This led to an invitation for us to do something really special at RHS Malvern Spring Festival." The invitation was from Clare’s friend Suzy Hillier, Head of Commercial at Three Counties Showground, which is home to the RHS Malvern Spring Festival, when Clare and Suzy came up with the idea of knitting a garden for RHS Malvern at Clare’s 50th birthday party. Clare also wanted to find a special way to mark what would’ve been Ken’s 50th birthday in 2018 and soon the £50,000 fundraising target to thank Sue Ryder and pay tribute to the poignant occasion became her focus. The incredible installation measuring
4m by 4m will include a hospice bedroom overgrown with knitted plants known for their healing properties. It will feature lavender, used by complementary therapists in reflexology treatment for patients at the hospice, and rosemary as ‘rosemary for remembrance’ was a saying Lady Ryder, the founder of the Sue Ryder charity, used often. Clare added: “As part of the installation we want to include 10,000 ‘works of heart’ – small hand knitted or crocheted hearts - created by local knitters, community groups and celebrities. These will be made available for visitors to place on trees around the ‘Work of Heart’ garden in return for a donation to the hospice charity, making it a living and growing display over the course of the festival. “We need as many people as possible to pick up their knitting and crochet needles to help us create these 10,000 hearts. That’s why we are asking people to create a ‘Work of Heart’ for our garden.” With the winter months traditionally seeing a spike in searches for knitting online, Clare and The Knits, a core team of knitters affectionately known as The Knits, thought it is the perfect time to launch a campaign asking people to create a ‘A Work of Heart’ for the knitted garden. They are teaming up with knitting groups, community groups and knitting shops to run a series of ‘Work of Heart’ workshops encouraging knitters and crafters to create a ‘work of heart’ for the hospice charity show garden. For details of the workshops visit workofheartgarden.org. Anyone wanting to contribute to the garden can also visit the website to find details of a pattern to create their own ‘Work of Heart’ and details of where to send it.
tranquillity where people living with conditions like cancer, heart disease, lung failure and neurological conditions can come to receive expert specialist care so they can live the fullest lives possible for as long as possible. I know Clare’s creation will capture and share this peace and tranquillity with the aim of generating interest, inspiration and positivity about hospice care. We’d like to encourage as many people as possible to support Clare’s campaign to create 10,000 hearts for the knitted garden, and to come along and see the knitted garden itself at the RHS Malvern Spring Festival in May.” Suzy Hillier said: “RHS Malvern exemplifies excellence in gardening and values the role horticulture plays in our health and wellbeing. The saying goes “A beautiful garden is a work of heart’ and this created a compelling synergy for the ‘Work of Heart’ garden to be featured at the Festival. With Gloucestershire - the home of Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice - being one of the three counties along with Worcestershire and Herefordshire, we’re delighted to able to showcase this unique installation. We expect more than 100,000 people to attend the festival between May 10th and 13th, giving them the opportunity to see this once in a lifetime creation.” To get behind Clare’s fundraising effort and make a donation please visit http://www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/workofheartgarden For more information on the Work of Heart Garden in support of Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice visit workofheartgarden.org, like www.facebook.com/WorkofHeartGarden on Facebook or follow @WorkofHeart Knit on Twitter or 'workofheartgarden' on Instagram. Regenerating Grangefield parkland in Bishop’s Cleeve A large area of public open space in Bishop’s Cleeve will be regenerated to help reconnect the community with nature, water and wildlife. The Grangefield Watercourse Restoration project will see the area enhanced with a meandering watercourse, wetland, wild meadows and walkways. Designs for the parkland, commissioned by Tewkesbury Borough Council, are still at a draft stage at the moment, but the final design will be shared in the coming weeks. By commissioning first-class landscape design, the parkland will soon have the potential to reduce flood risk, improve biodiversity, increase water quality and enhance the local area, all while making the area a lot easier to maintain. The circular pathway, which is regularly used by dog walkers, is to be maintained as part of this project, but it is hoped that the project will attract even more members of the community to use the area. Councillor Jim Mason, Tewkesbury Borough Council’s lead member for clean and green environment, said: “This is a very exciting project as we are looking at enhancing the way this land is used. By not going down a traditional, hard engineered route we will be able to make this area a more attractive place for both the residents of Bishop's Cleeve and the local wildlife.” It is anticipated the majority of the works will be finished by the end of 2018.
“Your magazine is a really good source for advertising and it is bringing people in. Thank you!”
