Resolve to tell the world! Hello and welcome to the 1st edition of Love Local Magazines for 2019. I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and New Year. I find the new year always starts so well with New Year’s resolutions and lots of positive thoughts. However, if you are anything like me, by the time February comes, the resolutions have fallen by the wayside and are a distant memory. However, this year I have decided to eat well and get fit, but more importantly, give up smoking. So, if there are any hypnotists out there who could help me please get in touch! Getting fit – or at least fitter - is easier to stick to when others are doing it too. And whether it’s walking to work instead of taking the car, going for a bike ride, playing games in the garden or doing some exercises in the comfort of your own home, activity which

fits in with friends and family is definitely more motivating. It can be hard though, especially after a full day’s work in dark and cold January, but I am determined to make a difference this year. Everyone says moving a bit more and eating a bit less is the way to do it but with lots of Christmas goodies left over its going to be hard. I’m told that one of the best ways to stick to your resolutions is to tell other people about them. By writing it here I’ve now mentioned it to 32,500 households. Should be a doddle then!

Local History

When trams ran up Cleeve Hill Did you spend fruitless minutes in a traffic queue on Cleeve Hill last summer as the county council carried out slip stabilisation? If you were caught in a queue at the end of the first week in September, you might just have noticed something remarkable - a short stretch of tram track, complete with wooden sleepers. Yes, trams once travelled up Cleeve Hill. This is the story.

As Cheltenham grew in the second half of the nineteenth century, the town council began to consider providing some sort of public transport, but when trams were first suggested in 1879 they were rejected in favour of buses. Yet nothing happened for another ten years when an hourly service began from Lansdown Castle, at the junction of Lansdown Road and Gloucester Road, to Southam through Prestbury. These were horse-drawn, but in 1895 the council built an electricity generating station, now the Strozzi Palace, in Clarence Street and the possibility of introducing the new-fangled electric tram became real. Enter Thomas Nevins, an IrishAmerican entrepreneur, who in 1898 set up the Cheltenham and District Light Railway Company. He had the idea of using the 6

electricity to power the trams. The town council was enthusiastic but why should Cleeve Hill ever be considered a destination, being such a long way out of town and approached up a steep slope? On the one hand the area was rapidly developing as an affluent outer suburb and on the other hand it had become a valuable recreational area for all Cheltonians (of course, the two functions were not always compatible!). As one councillor rather optimistically forecast in 1896, “Cleeve Hill should be to Cheltenham what Clifton is to Bristol!" The route was laid out from Lansdown Castle, past Cheltenham's two railway stations, at Lansdown (the present station) and St James (opposite St Gregory's church) to Cleeve Hill. There was even talk of taking the trams to Winchcombe but knowledge that the Great Western Railway was originally planning a railway through the town meant that never happened. The necessary act of parliament laid down the gauge as a narrow three feet six inches with no more than eleven inches overhanging each side of the tram. The maximum speed would be 8mph. If this seems very slow, don’t forget alternatives still depended on horsepower! The three

and a half miles from Prestbury to the Malvern View Hotel cost ÂŁ36,000 to build. Work began in February 1901 and by the end of April over five miles of track had been laid. This was quick work, no doubt the result of employing 120 labourers many said to have followed Thomas Nevins from the USA, from where the first tramcars were imported.

All was set for a grand opening in July 1901, but tragedy struck when a tramcar on a test run only reached Cleeve Hill terminus. Note the donkey cart ready the Rising Sun Hotel before it began to slip back with its brakes locked on, to deliver goods brought up by the tram. reaching 40mph before overturning The affluent Cheltenham middle classes now in Southam, killing two workmen. found themselves surrounded by hundreds, This meant that when the service did if not thousands, of the very townspeople start on the 17th of August no passenger they were trying to avoid by living on the hill. was allowed on the top deck. When two single deck tramcars arrived, built this time In my next article, I will investigate the attractions locally in Gloucester, all passengers for the designed for 'the simple trammist' when he hill had to change in Southam. Holy Wellington Boots Ronnie lifted his forehead from the steering wheel and prodded Uncle Graeme’s shoulder. Graeme spluttered awake. “Have we arrived?”

“Nope, we’re out of petrol,” Ronnie replied. “Turns out your car doesn’t run on fresh air after all.”

The ladies of the Women’s Institute were expecting Graeme in half an hour for a talk on success and being in tune with the universe. Graeme had decided over Christmas to pursue a career as a professional motivational speaker. He’d bagged this, his first gig, after the gentleman booked to demonstrate flower arranging had to cancel due to allergies. This, Graeme claimed, was just more evidence of the universe working in his favour. 10

The fact that he’d lost his driving licence was not an obstacle. It was a gift from the universe claimed Graeme because all successful people were chauffeurdriven. Ronnie considered it a bit rich that the universe was taking all the credit when he was the one doing all the driving. “The village is two miles up this road. If we run we could make it?”

“Run?” Graeme spluttered. “It will hardly give the right impression if I arrive out of puff.” He shook his head. “They need to see me as I am, a hugely successful man.” Ronnie looked at his map for clues.

“Found it!” he said, pleased with himself. “A footpath cuts across that field, we could walk it in twenty minutes.” “I’ll just get my wellies,” Ronnie said,

climbing out of the car.

“Aren’t you the proper little boy scout!” Graeme declared, following him.

“It’s just common sense,” Ronnie replied.

“My shoes are leather-soled and bespoke.” He presented his toe in the manner of a portly ballerina. “Do you not think if we were to ask the universe,” he continued, “it would indicate that I should wear the boots?” Ronnie sighed; once more Graeme and his universe had ganged up on him. He handed the wellies to his uncle, who stared at them indignantly.

“I’ll never get so much as a toe in these!” He thrust them back at Ronnie. “The universe has other plans for my feet. Let’s be off.” After a weekend’s rain the verge was soft and boggy, but just ahead was a public footpath sign. The clouds above them cracked open and a weak shaft of sunlight picked out something on the ground. Sitting neatly, waiting for them, was a pair of wellington boots. They looked exactly Graeme’s size.

were a mirage.

“We have a problem.” He held the boots up like binoculars, while two rubber soles remained on the ground. “Their bottoms have fallen off.” Perhaps the universe had a sense of humour after all. By Jackie Brewster

“That’s unbelievable!” Ronnie gasped. “Who’s left them there?”

“It’s quite simple.” Graeme was already removing his shoes. “I required waterproof footwear, and the universe provided.” “That’s blown my mind.” Ronnie rubbed his chin, wondering if maybe Graeme had been right all along. “Hand me the boots, dear boy,” Graeme said, wobbling on one foot.

Auction Anecdote I usually like to feature some of the most expensive prices in my anecdotes, partly to show off I guess and partly since they seem the most ‘newsworthy’. However, in doing so, I am often missing out on telling you about an important element of our business - the sale of small specialist collectables direct to collectors all around the world via online bidding. Most salesrooms now upload fully illustrated online catalogues onto the internet which enables millions of buyers to easily search and find even the most obscure collectables – they can even register to receive an email to notify them when items they are interested in are coming up for sale. Whilst some of the larger salesrooms catalogue small items into large groups, we like to sell them in smaller lots so that they can be bought directly by collectors. Combine this with our careful photography and it’s a win-win situation for our vendors as well as our buyers. I enjoy cataloguing all these interesting bits and bobs and like to think of all the small ‘treasures’ heading off to new homes where they will be cleaned up, researched and loved! A typical example of this in the December sale was a late 19th century American ‘Singer’s Patent’ compass in a goldplated case which sold for £360. The compass was a rather unusual gentleman’s example of the patent with a mother of pearl dial. The bidding raced ahead online and the item was eventually sold to a determined buyer in Pennsylvania, so the compass will be heading home and I hope the buyer will be delighted with the new addition to his collection. Smiths’ next sale is on the 25th of January and includes a full range of antiques. Entries are invited on the 3rd, 8th & 10th of January. GARDENING

Winter Colour Happy New Year to you! Despite the winter weather, with planning and strategic planting your garden can still look gorgeous, with colourful plants to add interest to your plot.

Dogwoods or Cornus are great winter stem-colour plants. Planted in a moist sunny spot, the crimson-red stems are stunning during winter, plus in autumn you’ll get red and purple foliage. To keep these colourful stems coming, cut them back to ground level in late spring every alternate year.

Winter classic good looks come from hollies, either green-leaved or in variegated form, such as ‘Argentea Marginata’ with silvery leaf edges, ‘Golden Queen’ with golden-yellow leaf edges, or ‘Ferrox Argentea’ with silveredged leaves covered with prickles! Some willows can be kept quite small, 18

and have stunning coloured winter stems. For egg-yolk yellow stems go for Salix alba ‘Vitellina’, for scarlet-orange stems there is ‘Britzensis’, or Salix acutifolia ‘Blue Streak’ has purple stems with a silvery-grey bloom and grey buds. These stems also need to be cut back to ground level every two years.

The ghost bramble, Rubus cockburnianus, a relative of the standard bramble, has arching white stems that look great in winter sunshine. In summer it produces sprays of small purple flowers.

Christmas Roses or hellebores, including Helleborus argutiflorus, have cup-shaped green flowers with prominent stamens, are tough and perform well. The classic Christmas rose is white-flowered (developing a pink tinge as it ages), and looks stunning against the central cluster of golden-yellow stamens. The variety ‘Potters Wheel’ has flowers up to 10cm in diameter.

Snowdrops in single and double forms look great planted in drifts or naturalised on a grassy bank. Buy ready-to-flower snowdrops in pots now, plant them out, and then plant them ‘in the green’ in a month or two’s time, when you can get the bulbs, complete with leaves, ready for planting by mail order.

Winter aconites have bright yellow, shiny petals and flowers like golden stars, and produce a superb display when planted close to and amongst snowdrops. Plenty of moisture without waterlogging is key. Winter-flowering pansies make a splash of colour in any garden, with just about every conceivable colour available. Even when struck by frost, the flowers soon perk up again.

Clematis cirrhosa is a winter-flowering

climber with yellow to white bell-shaped flowers and a delicate lemony perfume. The inner surface of the petals is delicately freckled, with variety ‘Freckles’ having the best dark spotting. The flowers last from early winter until the start of spring. Winter-flowering jasmine can be loosely trained against a wall for a great winter display of bright yellow starry flowers, and will remind you that spring is coming!

At www.pippagreenwood.com you can join ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ for great vegetable plants and weekly advice, practical and pretty plant supports, the fantastic SpeedHoe, gardening tools, signed books and more! Or why not book Pippa for a talk at your gardening club?

Health - The Most Effective Drug Ever? By Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk

• Regulate hormones that control appetite and sleep patterns. • Help control weight. • Release endorphins that ease pain. • Improve bowel function and prevent constipation. By improving your physical health and preventing falls, exercise can increase your longevity too. However, exercise can do a lot more than that.

Mental Health and Wellbeing Benefits

“If exercise were a pill, it would be one of the most cost-effective drugs ever invented,” says health promotion consultant Dr Nick Cavill. That’s true because the benefits of exercise go way beyond simple ‘fitness’. Physical Health Benefits

Research has proved that regular exercise can actively help to prevent disease and debility. It can:

• Lower blood pressure (in turn lowering risk of stroke, heart attack, heart failure and kidney disease). • Increase muscle mass and strength, bone strength, cardiovascular endurance, flexibility and balance, helping to prevent strains, injuries, falls, osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. • Help prevent some cancers and diseases, including colon and breast cancer, Alzheimer’s and Type 2 diabetes. 24

Exercise can: Improve your mood, self-esteem and sleep patterns Exercise can improve sleep patterns and release endorphins that can lift your mood and increase your energy levels. By improving your fitness and appearance, and giving you goals, routine and a sense of achievement, it can also increase your self-esteem. Improve your mental health

Poor sleep can contribute to physical health issues and depression, anxiety, poor memory and concentration. Exercise can improve your sleep and is proven to help alleviate anxiety, stress and mild to moderate depression. Just 10 minutes of brisk walking can increase mental alertness, energy and positivity while increasing your activity from zero to exercising three times a week can reduce your depression risk by almost 20%. Give you ‘time off’

Some of your exercise should make you out of breath, but you can also do

more relaxing forms of exercise like tai chi, Pilates and yoga. Any exercise can give you time to focus on you, rather than your everyday concerns. Get you outdoors

Research has proved the benefits of ecotherapy and being active outdoors. Getting outside to enjoy some fresh air and sunshine is great for your mental and physical health, helping you produce the Vitamin D essential for absorption of calcium and good bone health. Improve your social life and family life – and have some fun!

Exercise can be fun, and by joining exercise classes or activity groups, you will also benefit from the positive effects that socialising and friendship can have on your health and wellbeing. Team sports can bring a sense of belonging and motivation, while becoming fitter may help you to take part in more family activities. Zumba, tennis, rowing, boxing, karate, netball, Pilates, dancing… there are many types of sport and exercise, so try out a few to find something you really enjoy.
