to the July/Aug 2014 edition of Bishop's Cleeve Magazine It's been a busy month! We've created a brand new website for Bishop's Cleeve, Woodmancote & Winchcombe Magazine, so please go and have a look, and while you are online, please also like our new Facebook page and follow us on Twitter to keep up to date with what's on in and around the area! All details are below. Remember that this magazine can also be viewed online via the website and there is a link on Facebook that you can share with friends and family further afield. This issue is jam-packed with articles and puzzles and of course if you are looking for a local business, you will find it in here. My favourite article each time is the Local History piece written by local historian, David Aldred. Thank you, David, for keeping us looking forward to your articles in each issue! This month, David has written about Cleeve Common and his article can be found on p6. Wimbledon is under way at the time of writing this, and I am very lucky to have a ticket to go and watch this weekend! I really hope the amazing weather we've had in the last few weeks holds... I'll pack the suncream and sunglasses but better take the umbrella with, Glastonbury is also on this weekend... Enjoy your Summer!

The aim is to raise a huge £21,000 nationally. Keep up with the birthday news on Facebook www.facebook.com/ monkeymusic. Classes run at nine venues across Cheltenham and Gloucester - in Tewkesbury, Cheltenham, Up Hatherley, Bishops Cleeve, Charlton Kings, Leckhampton, Bourtonon-the-Water and Churchdown. Catchy songs are mixed with a multitude of instruments and visual props, something for all musical maestros to get to grips with. Teacher Sian Ferris said: “Our classes introduce music to very young children in a way they can easily understand and enjoy – over the last 21 years more than 150,000 little ones have joined the fun. “Our 21st Birthday celebrations and competitions will bring even more fun, and because we’re also using the events to help support the work of charities that are very close to our hearts, we hope they’ll create a lasting legacy for our celebration too.”

Team 24:7 Fitness
Getting you fit for
SUMMER Team 24:7 opened up its doors in Winchcombe in January this year, and are now so popular that they are currently offering over 40 classes per week! Team 24:7 Fitness is run by Personal Trainer Matt and Felicity, who has danced professionally and is a qualified dance teacher. Between the two of them, they have received amazing feedback from members, who have lost weight and inches with their classes. Classes run every day, mornings and evenings, and the classes are suitable for all shapes, sizes and fitness levels. Depending on your goal, they will have the right class for you! From high tempo fatblast classes to amazing flexibility mobility and core strengthening classes in ballet tone. They also run the extremely popular Boxfit classes. Also available are personal training one to one sessions and group sessions if you need a push to get you going in the right direction. Studio 1 is full of functional equipment to help give you a workout that's second to none. At Team 24:7, they believe that a mix of high intensity cardio and strength training is the best way to burn fat, tone up and achieve
your maximum fitness results, and they've already had great feedback from members since their launch in January. "It's amazing to see how members have changed body shape, and hear that people have been able to sleep better and feel more energised throughout the day," says Matt. Studio 2 offers Ballet tone, Stretch classes, Adult Ballet and a number of children's pre school classes throughout the week. The classes in Studio 2 go hand in hand with Studio 1. Both studios work together to give you a variety of classes to choose from so that you can get the most out of your workout. For example, if you're short on time, their 30 minute Tornado Classes offer you both efficient and high-paced workouts or, if you've got the kids and no time to workout, why not try their fitness classes which run alongside special pre-school classes to enable you to have time to workout whilst the kids have fun just next door! In the near future they have plans for kids fitness classes and dance classes, so watch this space! For regular updates, you can find Team 247 Fitness on Facebook. For more information on the classes that are offered, head over to their website and have a look at the timetable, or simply give them a call. Matt and Felicity are always happy to explain how everything works.

local history During the long summer evenings many readers will delight in strolling across Cleeve Common to take the air and enjoy the exceptional views across the Vale. You cannot fail to notice the remains of an extensive quarrying industry which once took place over the common. This month's article briefly tells the story of that industry. Hopefully, by knowing more about the industry, your evening walks will seem more worthwhile.
The industry is an ancient one, for our story starts in Roman times at the King's Beeches at the top of Rising Sun Lane. It was here in 1903 that archaeologists found an Iron Age settlement lying under quarry waste in which they found three Roman coins from the 3rd century A.D. We also know that in Roman times there was a farmstead at nearby Haymes, where stone from the hill had been used for the footings of the walls. Succeeding centuries saw the scarp around Cleeve Cloud being transformed from a gentle slope to vertical cliffs. Seen from the air it is as if a gigantic mouse had been eating into a gigantic piece of cheese. Page 6
On your next walk across Cleeve Common From here came the good quality building stone, called freestone, which was used in Bishop's Cleeve's ancient buildings; St Michael's church from the 12th century, Cleeve Hall from the 13th century and the Tithe Barn from the 15th century. On the far northern side of the common we know that from before 1400 the Abbot of Winchcombe was renting Postlip Quarry from the lord of the manor, the Bishop of Worcester, for a token Postlip Quarry 6d (21/2p). Then a document of 1529 tells us that each farmer in Bishop's Cleeve had to provide five wagonloads of stone every year for the upkeep of the roads. This reminds us that not all the quarries provided valuable freestone for buildings. They also provided grit and sand and along the Undercliff on the way to Nutters' Wood remains of limekilns have been found, where stone was burnt into lime for mortar. As we reach the 19th century more details emerge of the industry. In 1832 Henry Gaskins paid Lord Ellenborough (Lord of Southam manor) ÂŁ20 a year to work the quarries. The 1851 census tells us that ten stonemasons were living in Bishop's

In 1900 eleven quarries were still being worked, but their days were numbered, and not only because bricks were much cheaper and more convenient. In 1890 an act was passed for regulating the uses of the common, leading to the setting up of the Board of Conservators with their mandate to protect and conserve the common. In 1911 local businessman and quarryman Arthur Yiend was ordered to the Vale. So, as conservation became stop quarrying along the face of Cleeve increasingly important, quarrying had all Cloud because he was destroying the Iron but passed into history by the end of the Age camp which can still be seen today. Mediterranean Magic by Pippa Greenwood
If you can’t get away this year, how about creating your own Mediterranean hotspot in your garden? Even if you do manage to escape to the sun for a week or two this year, you’ll still have the rest of the summer at home and a little slice of Italy, France or Greece outside your back door will bring happy memories flooding back. The first thing to do is to choose the sunniest spot available – it’ll not only make sitting out there more enjoyable, but will also mean that you can install some serious sun-loving plants too. Painting the nearby house, shed or garage wall with white masonry paint will help to create the right atmosphere and look. At the same time it will help to reflect our sunlight – often a bit washed out compared to more southern climes - so providing a stronger light for the type of plants that appreciate it.
want to make brand new pots look more weathered try painting them with a solution of plain yoghurt as this will help to encourage rapid colonisation by mosses, algae and lichens. Any new hard landscaping such as wall, paths or patios and terraced surfaces will look best in natural stone and there are now also terracotta tiles available that are suitable for use in the garden. Terracotta tiles can also have a storageheater effect too – after a long, hot day they will have absorbed a good deal of heat and this will then be released gradually in the evening. Add interest to a vertical surface by planting a vine. They have attractive leaves and there are plenty to choose from that will fruit well in our climate. You may not be able to create your own vintage but the vines will look particularly authentic when draped with a few bunches of grapes.
Mediterranean gardens often make full use of the walls and any other vertical surfaces, so put up hanging baskets, pots and wall baskets and cram them full of plants.
Glazed tiles, wall-hangings and even the odd ornament or two can also add to the Mediterranean look, but make sure you choose items that won’t be instantly bleached by the sun.
Plants in pots are a must and if possible choose stone or terracotta containers. If you
Try growing your own oranges or lemons. With our generally milder winters some gardeners
are even managing to keep these plants outside all year round with only the minimum of protection. Growing your citrus tree in a good-sized terracotta pot means that you can move it into a more protected spot if necessary. With their wonderful silvery grey leaves and their often rather untidy or gnarled shape, olives too are a plant well worth considering. Olives are best grown in a large container unless you have a warm garden and a very well-drained soil as they hate winter wet. Some plants just spell out Mediterranean Magic – try geraniums and pelargoniums, aeoniums and sempervivums, rosemary, thyme, oregano and pretty well anything with silvery foliage. Go for the brightest coloured flowers and your new holiday destination will also benefit from a subtle Mediterranean aroma too. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for her ‘Winter thru’ Spring’ vegetable collection, great plants for September and regular advice emails from Pippa, and a super range of gardening products including Nemasys caterpillar, slug, ant and other biological controls, Enviromesh & Envirofleece

Sunny Summer Days... Or Not By Ted Bruning
Ahhh, it’s sunny July at last; the sky is blue; the air is warm and your neighbourhood smells delightfully of sun-tan lotion and barbecue. Of course, being British, we understand that our summers are never a glorious succession of hot dry days and long evenings of tennis and Pimms. Indeed, it has even been known to rain sometimes. But let’s forget about the weather for a moment and focus on the climate – the difference being that the weather is what actually happens to you, while the climate is what weather becomes when people start analyzing it. The other difference is that climate is almost predictable but weather most certainly isn’t. The wedding planners, barbecue chefs, church fête organisers etcetera want to know when is the best time for the wedding/barbecue/fête/ day-trip or whatever? But the best answer is – and it’s a truly British answer, this – none of them. And any of them. So let’s narrow it down. Which is usually the least rainy month of summer? It has to be July, surely. Wrong! July is usually the wettest, actually, with an average of 101mm over the five years 2008-12. Then – another
big surprise – was August with 91.6mm, then September with 77.1mm, and taking gold by a healthy margin, was June with only 50.5mm. Mind you, June 2012 was also the rainiest month of all five summers in the sample with a squelching 157.8mm, and the two biggest rain-induced flash floods in living in memory weren’t in July but August – Lynmouth in 1952 and Boscastle in 2004. This, of course, being the difference between weather and climate. All right then, which is the sunniest, i.e. which has the best average of sunny hours per day (which we shall call SHPD for the sake of brevity)? This one has to be July, right? Uh-uh. The 10-year average for July is 6 SHPD, better than August at 5.5 SHPD and September (when of course the days are shorter anyway) at only 5 SHPD; but the winner is once again June with 6.9 SHPD. Still, July 2013 racked up an average of 8.2 SHPD, which is a record in recent years. July is, at least, the warmest month of summer, with average temperatures ranging from 13.7-23.4C over the past 20 years; but only just. August has been a close challenger, with an average low just edging ahead of July’s at 13.8C but an
average high just missing at 23.1C; so not much in it there. June and September, though, fall woefully short with ranges of 11.8-21C and 11.4-20C – it’s almost as if they aren’t even trying. All this, of course, depends on where you are. The further north you go the colder it gets, right? Well, yes; but not directly because you’re north – England has vineyards at the same latitude that Canada has polar bears. The skies above us are a battleground where four sets of weather fight for supremacy: Western Scotland gets its from the Maritime Polar region (cold and wet); Eastern Scotland and the North of England get theirs from the Continental Polar (cold and dry); Wales and the West Country are at the mercy of the Maritime Tropical (warm and wet); and East Anglia and the South of England bask in the Continental Tropical (warm and dry). Hence the hottest day on record was 10th August 2003 in Faversham, Kent (38.5C), while the coldest was 30th December 1995 at Altnaharran, Sutherland (-27.2C). Well, that’s me decided, then. This year’s barbecues will be in Faversham. Which is handy, because that’s where my Mum lives.

Finance How to Deal Effectively with Debt By Ann Haldon www.cornerstonewebcontent.com
During the year to September 2013, Citizens Advice Bureaux in England and Wales dealt with 7,015 new debt problems every working day. This is the rather startling figure issued by financial capability organisation, The Money Charity, and it illustrates just how people in the UK are struggling to keep on top of money issues.
Where to go for reliable advice The internet provides a valuable source of information and advice on debt and how to deal with it, but sometimes it can be more reassuring to sit down with a financial expert and let them explain the solutions available to you in person. The Citizens Advice service is the obvious choice for debt help, with over 3,300 bureaux around England and Wales. The charity offers free independent advice to all, in confidence, at high street locations including dedicated offices, doctors’ surgeries,
courts, and even prisons. They also provide their services via email, the internet and telephone if preferred. An excellent online source of information is the StepChange Debt Charity, which you may know under its former title of the Consumer Credit Counselling Service. They provide information and advice about all aspects of debt, including tips to avoid it, dealing with it effectively, and what to do if you are overwhelmed by money worries.
Reasons for getting into debt StepChange states that “Overspending is not the main cause of debt problems” and accounts for only 10% of the cases they deal with. So what are the main causes? Well, they could occur for a number of reasons: • Unexpected redundancy, job loss or reduced hours • A life event, such as divorce or separation • Injury or illness • Reduced income • Failure to budget effectively In recent years, job losses and redundancies have accounted for many of the debt problems in this country.
The loss of income may have been sudden, and coupled with spiralling living costs, debt can become unavoidable.
What are the best ways to tackle debt? This largely depends on the amount and type of debt concerned. There are ways to quickly reduce household expenses and interest charges though, so think about switching your energy supplier if you aren’t locked into a deal, and move all credit card debt onto a 0% or low interest card if you can. According to The Money Charity, the average credit card interest rate in November 2013 was 17.10%, which was 16.60% above the Bank of England Base Rate at the time. If only the minimum credit card payment is made each month, high interest rates such as these can make credit card debt quickly spiral. Below are some easy things to do that will help gain control over your finances: • Make a detailed list of all household income and expenditure, including items such as birthday and Christmas presents • Cancel all unnecessary direct debits and standing orders, and cut back on nonessential spending • Once your outgoings have been reduced or consolidated, make a strict budget to include basic household and living costs • Consider keeping only one credit card, which should be used purely for emergencies

sally@thebooksangel.com But what if it’s already too late? There are actions you can take as a last resort, such as Individual Voluntary Arrangements, Administration Orders, or declaring bankruptcy. These are all big steps, however, and you need to take professional advice before making such a decision. Let’s take a look at couple of these solutions in a little more detail: Administration Order If you have a County Court Judgement against you and cannot afford to pay, this may be a viable option as long as there is less than £5,000 of unsecured debt owed to a minimum of two creditors, and you are able to prove that your income will cover the repayments. This works by making a single monthly payment to your local
court, which is then divided between all creditors. Pros • your debts are consolidated into one monthly payment • negotiations with creditors are carried out by the court on your behalf Cons • money can be taken from your wages if you do not keep up the payments • the Administration Order will be noted on your credit file for a period of six years Individual Voluntary Arrangement An Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA) is administered by a professional Insolvency Practitioner who negotiates with creditors on your behalf. A repayment amount is decided upon, and if 75% of your creditors agree with this figure, one monthly payment is made to the
Insolvency Practitioner, who then divides it up between the creditors as arranged. Pros • there is no contact between you and your creditors • debts are consolidated Cons • a note will be placed on your credit file, and remain there for six years • there is a small handling fee for each payment made • the IVA will be noted in the Individual Insolvency Register, which is a public record, and is not removed until three months after the end of the IVA An important consideration in all this is choosing the right people to help you. You need to approach a charity or other non-profit organisation with counsellors who are paid to help you, rather than make money from you.

The Better Life The Joy of Camping by Derek Thompson We Better Lifers love to bask in the reflected glory of a productive garden, water butts and compost bins all present and correct, and a house that whispers, “Eco-friendly.” However, come the summer (when we get one) a mania overtakes us; we succumb to the notion that leaving it all behind for a week or two under canvas is just what the doctor ordered. If the doctor were a sadist, that is. First there’s the frantic search for all the equipment you swore you’d never need again. The same equipment you helpfully dispersed into as many cupboards and rooms as possible. Then, when you’ve located everything – or given up the ghost and bought replacements – you draw up a to-do list for your neighbour: tend to the cat, irrigate the garden (it sounds much more accomplished than ‘water’) and fight the good fight against marauding molluscs. After that, with a clear conscience and green-tinted glasses, you can pack up and head into the wilderness. Well, a wilderness with a toilet block, shower facilities, recycling area and an Internet café. Okay, I may have exaggerated about that last one. What could be more relaxing
than the peaceful sounds of the countryside? Although the dawn chorus – from nearby tents – of snoring, hayfever and other noises is like a trumpeting ensemble to the gods. Sometimes, when you tuck into your farmmade yogurt, seated on recycled wooden pallet benches, you can even catch harmonies. Those same delightful neighbours may wander back late from the village pub, drunk and incoherent, whispering louder than a jet engine. And what camping experience would be complete without the melodic drone of someone on a mobile declaring, “I’m in a tent – go on, guess where?” The Arctic, you may wish malignly. The weather, of course, conspires to keep you in a state of perpetual moistness. Whether it’s damp clothing – silly you for having brought only one pair of walking boots – or an unexpectedly warm summer evening, turning your camping fleece into a waterretaining sauna, you can be sure that the heady scent of sweat and disdain will linger in your nostrils for days to come.
all part of living among the elements. There’s plenty of wildlife too and most of it is set on getting inside your tent. Not the birds though – they’re too canny for that. And besides, it’s much more fun to use your tent canvas for target practice! The days of alfresco eating (or wasp ballet), donating blood to the local mosquitoes and accidental nettle stings – are there any other kind? – effortlessly blend and before you’re ready the last day arrives. The rubbish is removed, along with any litter you see on the way; the tent wrestled back into its bag and the postcards you forgot to send are posted on the way out. These are mostly to people you’ll be telephoning when you get home. Then, as you survey the pallid grass where your temporary home used to stand, one of you will amiably suggest that, all in all, it was great fun – same time again next year? Why not, the other will agree, adding an extra touch of citronella for the journey home, why not indeed?
Making tea on an incline is like participating in a health and safety film. The groundsheet, thankfully, is waterproof, though not, alas, melt-proof. Still, it’s

Around Britain 5 Medical Firsts 1. Berkeley - Dr Edward Jenner began investigating smallpox at his medical practice in Berkeley, Gloucestershire, in the 1770s. Having noted that local milkmaids never contracted the disease, Jenner theorised that the cowpox they caught from their animals must somehow protect them against the more dangerous smallpox virus. His theory was correct, and by 1840 Parliament had introduced free vaccinations against the disease. 2. Birmingham - While working at Birmingham General Hospital in the 1770s, the chemist William Withering noted that patients suffering from dropsy made vast improvements upon taking a local herbal remedy containing foxgloves. Withering eventually discovered that the digitalis the foxgloves contain was effective in treating heart disease. 3. Cambridge - The Cambridge University chemist Frederick Gowland Hopkins became one of the first scientists to propose the existence of vitamins, or ‘accessory food factors’ as he called them, in 1898. His work won him the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1929. 4. Oldham - Born at Oldham General Hospital on July 25 1978, Louise Brown was the first baby in the world to have been successfully conceived by in vitro fertilisation, or IVF. Now a common fertility treatment, the IVF procedure involves fertilisation of an egg outside of a womb, with the egg then transplanted back into the mother. 5. Portsmouth - When HMS Salisbury set sail from Portsmouth in 1747, on board was naval physician James Lind, who experimented by giving the crew a variety of foods (including garlic, citrus fruit and vinegar) to test their effectiveness in preventing scurvy. Although not the first scientist to propose the health benefits of citrus, Lind’s cleverly designed Salisbury experiment is considered the first medical trial of its type. © Taken from The British Isles: A Trivia Gazetteer by Paul Anthony Jones

Bountiful Books The summer is in full-swing and there’s an abundance of luscious fruits to get our lips smacking. We’ve handpicked some choice novels that are ripe with ideas, visions, fantastic stories and characters we will never forget. It’s a bumper crop, so kick back in the sunshine and tuck in. The Grapes of Wrath - John Steinbeck If you want drama on an epic scale, then The Grapes of Wrath will whip you into a frenzy, beat you into a pulp and then spit you out into the corner. It’s the American Dream in its purest and most stark form, and follows the lives of one family of sharecroppers, the Joads from Oklahoma. Driven from their homes and their agricultural land by the Dust Bowl, they head west to California in search of work and a future. The devastation wreaked by the Great Depression scarred the landscape and battered these migrating ‘Okies’ into submission. Steinbeck won a Pulitzer for his tribute to the human spirit, endurance and dignity and possibly the greatest American classic ever written.
Oranges are not the Only Fruit - Jeanette Winterson Sixteen year old Jeanette looks all set to lead the life of a devout missionary, carrying out God’s work and committing her life to the church, having been adopted as a child by a family of evangelists. That is until she finds a greater object of passion and a reason to commit to a mere mortal; a young female convert of hers. Suddenly the path that seemed set out for her is vanishing before her eyes and she is forced to leave behind the church, her family and her home in the industrial north of England. This is a powerful and challenging story, taking one girl a long way from where she started, in the pursuit of happiness and a clear idea of ‘self’.
Watermelon - Marian Keyes How does it feel to have your husband walk out on you, the day your first child is born? Claire is quite literally left holding the baby, when her husband decides to up and leave her for the woman who lives in the flat downstairs. Oh, the humiliation. So Claire packs her bags and heads back to the bosom of her own family in Dublin to lick her wounds and plan her future. What happens when the philandering husband then tries to worm his way back into Claire’s affections? Stronger and much more resolute, the ‘new’ Claire must decide whether or not she’s going to forgive or forget.
The Lemon Table - Julian Barnes All the characters in Barnes’ The Lemon Table are facing the end of their lives, and all with a different perspective and reactions to reaching the ‘end of the road’. One man measures his life in the number of haircuts he has given, whilst a retired army major prepares for his trip to his regimental dinner, and his regular date with ‘working girl’ Babs. Elsewhere, a woman in a nursing home develops a new correspondence with an author that brings vitality to an ageing mind and body. None of them will go quietly into the night, and each finds a way to face up to their mortality with passion and
vigour. It’s a lesson for us all, told in the most poignant of ways. Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café - Fanny Flagg With good food and friends you can’t go far wrong. Idgie and Ruth open their cafe, and their arms to the local townspeople, creating a home from home for many of their customers. It’s a book that’s jam-packed with laughter, tall tales and even the occasional murder, all served up with a side of grits. Reading Fried Green Tomatoes is like tucking into some hearty southern fodder; ‘soul food’ as they say in Alabama, and good for the soul is exactly what this delicious and mouth-watering offering is. A Clockwork Orange - Anthony Burgess Not one for the faint-hearted, this is the story of fifteen year old Alex, an ultra-violent and highly unpredictable ‘droog’ who must be reformed and rehabilitated by the State. Burgess paints a picture of a nightmarish future, where the criminal element rules the streets at night, and the out of control teenagers speak their own slang of ‘Nadsat’. Alex’s gang carry out horrific attacks, robbing and killing their way through life until Alex is forced to undergo re-education. The novel asks a lot of important questions about civil liberties and what it means to be truly free. It’s extremely thought-provoking, though this orange might leave a nasty taste in your mouth.

What happened in... ...July 1961? USSR joined Nikita Kruschev at the Kremlin for a chat and a few vodkas, during which the Russian President warned him against joining France and the US in going to war over West Berlin. “Six hydrogen bombs would be quite enough to annihilate the British Isles,” he said, affably, “and nine would take care of France.” 1st: At 7.45 pm in Sandringham, Norfolk, Frances Spencer gave birth to a baby girl. The child was christened Diana Frances Spencer, but the world would know her as Princess Diana, or simply Diana. 2nd: American author and journalist Ernest Hemingway rose early, without waking his wife, and took a shotgun from a cupboard. Then the Nobel prize-winner, whose talents and accomplishments would fill this page, took his own life. British Ambassador to the
8th: American defector Lee Harvey Oswald travelled to the American Embassy in Moscow to ask for the return of his passport. His wish was granted and he returned to the States. And assassinated the President. Identical triplets were born at Long Island Jewish Hospital and subsequently adopted by three separate families, each unaware of the multiple birth. The siblings met by chance in 1980 and discovered they had been the subject of a secret study into separation of identical twins and triplets by the Louise Wise Agency.
A gallon of petrol was about 4/- 10d The average cost of a house was about £2,800
Three of the bestselling singles this year were: Runaway - Del Shannon Temptation - Everly Brothers Well I ask You - Eden Kane
19th: The world’s first in-flight movie, By Love Possessed, starring Lana Turner, was shown during a TWA flight; but only to its first-class passengers. 21st: Piloting the MercuryRedstone 4 capsule, Gus Grisson became the second American in space. During the splashdown the door opened prematurely and the capsule began flooding. He managed to swim clear but his space suit was now flooding. He was rescued by helicopter in time to disappoint a hungry shark which had been closing on the scene. Gus was killed in 1967 when the capsule of Apollo 1 caught fire. 25th: Following increasingly threatening rhetoric from the Kremlin, President Kennedy gave a speech to the nation. In it he vowed to redouble the country’s military capability and take whatever action necessary, including nuclear, to counter threats to West Berlin and the free world. 31st: IBM introduced their Selectric typewriter, or the ‘golf ball’ as it was more commonly known. Surely technology cannot advance further than this, I remember thinking when I first saw this marvel.

Home & Interiors Double-Up Your Space
By Katherine Sorrell
When you have run out of space and it’s not possible to extend, the time has come to think creatively. With the right approach, you may even be able to make two rooms out of one. Had a new baby? Children growing up? Started working from home? Every year it seems like there’s more pressure on our living space. And while it’s not always possible to move up the property ladder to a ten-bedroom mansion, there is always a way to make your current property work better for you. It’s called doubling-up – and it’s all about giving your home a new lease of life with some thoughtful rearrangements and careful additions, resulting in multifunctional rooms that are entirely practical and yet also utterly stylish. Take a long, hard look at every room in your home and, even in the smallest of apartments, it will soon be possible to see which spaces can be modified so as to serve more than one purpose. We’re not talking about expensive extensions or complex loft conversions, but simply about making the most of what you’ve already got. Like adding a dining area to a kitchen, a home office in a bedroom or a hideaway guest bed in a living room. The trick is to forget your preconceptions about where you live and be creative with the space. To get the most out
No room to sit down and eat? Turn a small kitchen into a kitchen/diner with a foldaway table and chairs. The table is attached to a wall with dowels, while the chairs can be hung on a wall hook, nicely out of the way.

By raising a child’s bed you create two rooms: one for sleeping, and one below for playing, studying, relaxing or for sleepovers. The same goes with an adult bedroom – if you have high enough ceilings, consider building a mezzanine sleeping space, leaving room underneath to use however you wish. Loft bed by Oliver Furniture, £995, Nubie, 01825 724160; www.nubie.co.uk.

of every inch (vital when you need to double up on what you have), foldaway furniture is a great option to start with, whether it’s a bed, a desk or a dining table and chairs. Next, make the most of any free wall. Peg rails and hanging rails, hooks and shelves – from high above your head to fitted across an alcove, this can be incredibly useful storage. Think high: a raised child’s bed with space beneath for a desk, sofa or play area, for example. Or could you even build a mezzanine sleeping or working space? And think low: slide a truckle bed under a permanent one, or tuck stools under a small table and magically create an intimate dining area. It’s a lateral-thinking approach that’s quick, easy and inexpensive, and that will make your home as functional and as good-looking as you could ever want, no matter what changes come your way in the future.

what's on Tewkesbury Medieval Festival 12th & 13th July Friday 11:00am - 6:00pm Saturday 11:00am - 5:00pm A38 Gloucester Road, Tewkesbury The Battle Of Tewkesbury took place on 4th May 1471 and was the final battle in the War Of The Roses between the Houses of York and Lancaster. Prince Edward was killed either during or just after the battle and is now buried in Tewkesbury Abbey. The Battle Of Tewkesbury is now fought every year with cannons firing, swords clashing and soldiers marching. Thousands of re-enactors and medieval enthusiasts from all around the world visit Tewkesbury as part of the Tewkesbury Medieval Festival. The battleground is filled with knights in armour, warriors and townsfolk in medieval dress. Many sleep in traditional tents and cook over open fires eating typical medieval food. The Tewkesbury Medieval Festival is the largest free medieval enactment and fayre in Europe. Traditional medieval entertainment is provided by jugglers, musicians, dancers and jesters. The Medieval Market is full of stall holders selling everything from musical instruments to medieval style pots and pans. Its a great family day out and a insight into living history. - Living History camp - Medieval Market - Entertainment - Activites for kids - Beer tent - ales & cider

As well as an intensive service of diesel hauled trains and a DMU service, the gala will include an Open Day at the newly built Toddington Diesel Shed with an under-cover model railway exhibition, a number of ‘behind the scenes’ and ‘how it works’ displays relating to diesel locomotives, and an opportunity to get an ‘up close’ view of two long term overhaul projects on a class 47 and a class 37 including cab visits.

We were very so happy, the weather was lovely and we can't wait to do it again next year!
Here are some pics to see what we have been up to recently at Bishop's Cleeve Tesco to get involved with helping the local community. Every little helps!
