Get out and about

If you are anything like me, you spent an awful lot of time during the last couple of months sat indoors in front of some kind of screen or device, however, thanks to the warmer temperatures and longer days, I feel more and more compelled to go out and embrace the wonderful outdoors.

I'm not the sportiest of people, the gym isn't really for me, but ask me to go on a walk and 9 times out of 10 I'm up for it. Walking is a great way to exercise - it helps you blow away the cobwebs (and burn off all those chocolate Easter eggs), and best of all - it's free! Whether you have a wander around your neighbourhood, visit the park or spend a day in the countryside, you can be sure to be doing your body a favour. If you get tired easily and need support while walking, check out Linden Leisure's fantastic range of walking and seat sticks (p.11).

CONTACT US

Another great way to enjoy some exercise and fresh air is gardening. Whether you are pressure washing the patio, cutting the hedge or mowing the lawn, both your garden and your body will thank you for it, even if the latter may not feel like it straight away. You will also get a great sense of achievement and peace of mind - that is until it all grows back at least...

Finally, if you just fancy going out and enjoying yourself - there's a fantastic range of events and festivals taking place in and around the area this month, and if all these days out leave you feeling inspired and you enjoy writing, check out the Gloucestershire Writers' Network Competition on p.14.

Local History

A COSTLY CASE Since the reign of Queen Elizabeth I (1558-1603), governments - both local and national, have struggled and continue to struggle with measures to alleviate poverty. In 1601 Parliament passed an act requiring each parish to appoint annually two unpaid overseers of the poor who were given the power to raise taxes based on the rateable value of property. The funds were used to give paupers small sums of money or to provide them with food and clothing. Alternatively, the overseers could build a poorhouse or workhouse, particularly for those unable to live in their own homes, usually the aged, infirm, orphans and homeless single mothers. To prevent 'strangers' exploiting the goodwill of the parish, in 1662 another act was passed which stated paupers could only receive poor relief where they had a 'settlement' where they had been born, married, served an apprenticeship or worked for at least a year and a day. In 1783 the overseers of the poor of Bishop's Cleeve entered 6

The much-altered abbot's house served as Winchcombe workhouse from 1746 to 1815. This drawing was made just before its demolition. Only the doorway survives, in a private garden

into a contract with their counterparts in Winchcombe to take their paupers into the Winchcombe workhouse paying ÂŁ1.10s. (ÂŁ1.50p) yearly rental and 3s. (15p) per week for each pauper, an arrangement which lasted until 1801. This is all background to a story which emerges from a document I recently discovered in the county archives in Gloucester.

My document, dated 1798, was a list of fees and expenses incurred by a Cheltenham solicitor, Thomas Markham, who had been commissioned by the overseers of Bishop's Cleeve to fight (successfully) against the removal of Thomas Lane, a pauper from Bishop's Cleeve, from Winchcombe workhouse to Cheltenham workhouse. The first entry was dated 17 October 1798 when Thomas Markham charged 6s.8d. (34p) for a preliminary meeting with the overseers and then a similar sum to question Thomas Lane himself. Already this preliminary meeting had cost the overseers

of Bishop's Cleeve the equivalent of more than a month's payment for a pauper in Winchcombe workhouse. And this was just the start!

Markham next journeyed to Bishop's Cleeve to interview two witnesses, Wilkes and Holbrow, to support the case, charging £1.1s. (£1.05p) for the interview plus 3s.8d. (18p) for the hire of a horse and 'other expenses'. He charged 5s. (25p) for his clerks to write the notice of the appeal and two copies of it. Taking these to Winchcombe cost 3s.8d. (18p) for the horse and turnpike tolls and 10s. 6d. (52p) for his time. When Thomas Markham returned to Winchcombe to again question Thomas Lane he charged £1.1s. (£1.05p) and this time 4s.6d. (22p) for travelling expenses. The costs continued to mount up as Markham and his clerks journeyed between Cheltenham, Winchcombe and then to the court in Gloucester, where the appeal was held. It cost £3.5s.6d (£3.27p) just to present the case to the court. Paying Mr Hinks of the Booth Hall in Winchcombe

(by the Town Hall at The Cross) for a carriage and drivers to take a Mr Hughes as a witness cost £3.9s. (£3.45p). The case was dragging on and it was December when Thomas Lane had to travel to court - on horseback, not in a carriage, which cost 7s.4d. (36p). The total bill came to £18.1s.10d. (£18.09p). The court ordered the Winchcombe overseers to pay £2 and the rest was payable by the Bishop's Cleeve overseers. How many paupers from Bishop's Cleeve might that have paid for in Winchcombe workhouse?! We are now never likely to know the reasons behind such an expensive court case - and yet there is one final mystery, for Thomas Markham was not paid until 24 August 1809, nearly eleven years after he had presented his bill! NB I have converted the original sums of money into rounded decimal equivalents but have not attempted to convert to modern values, as the sums are all relative to each other.

- David Aldred

Circumstantial evidence suggests this now-blocked archway in Cowl Lane was created as an entrance to the workhouse because the paupers were forbidden to use the more direct entrance onto what is now Abbey Terrace Page 7

Health

May is National Walking Month National Walking Month is an annual campaign to promote the benefits of walking.

It is perhaps walking that is the most accessible exercise, available to all regardless of current levels of fitness or income.

Your health Walking gives your leg muscles and lungs a workout; reduces stress; helps you sleep; burns excess calories; and reduces your risk of osteoporosis, cancer, depression and Type 2 diabetes. Phew, that sounds so good it should be prescribed.

The NHS says even just a brisk daily 10-minute walk has many health benefits, counting towards your recommended 150 minutes of weekly exercise. A brisk pace is around 3 miles an hour – 10

if you’re relatively fit, you should still be able to talk, but not sing a song. The free NHS Active 10 app handily tells you when you’re walking fast enough and suggests ways to fit in more brisk walking. Particularly through the late spring and summer, walking outside will top-up your levels of Vitamin D which is good for your bone health and your immune system.

Be sociable – or get alone time Walking can be a chance to chat with your friends and family. Nordic walking classes, a Walking for Health walk, or a walking group such as the Ramblers (formerly the Ramblers Association) are ideal if you don’t have anyone to walk with. However, you may prefer to use walks as a chance for some time to yourself. You could listen to music which can help you get into a rhythm and walk faster.

If you are concerned about wearing headphones while you walk, look at AfterShokz Bone Conduction Headphones. These sit on bones on the sides of your head but not in your ears, meaning you can still hear traffic.

Raise money for a good cause For National Walking Month, the British Heart Foundation is promoting the Just Walk initiative to encourage you to raise money in an organised walk. Tying in with this is their Walk to School Week from the 16th to the 20th May, where they ask teachers, parents and children to put their best foot forward and walk to school each day. How and where to walk You can either set aside time for walking or just build it into your daily routine and

journeys. Could you get the family out for an after-dinner walk or take a weekend ramble that ends at a pub or restaurant?

• Wear supportive, suitable footwear. If you are walking to work, you could take a smarter pair of shoes with you to change into. • Stay hydrated. Always take a drink with you if you’re planning to walk for more than 20 minutes or it’s hot. • Always consider the terrain and the weather, especially if you’re heading off the beaten track. Do you need warm and/ or waterproof clothing, headgear and footwear? Do you have snacks, drinks, a first aid kit and a charged mobile phone? An internet search will return innumerable resources to help you both start and stick with it, not just for May but throughout the year.

Auction Anecdote Our April sale featured the most exciting consignment of advertising and packaging antiques I have ever encountered. The house had been furnished like a museum with antique advertising signs, mirrors and shop display cabinets covering every wall from the hallway, through the kitchen, sitting room, bedrooms and even the bathroom. All the items were exceptional in both their desirability and condition with several rarities such as a pictorial enamel sign for the ‘Wellington Journal and Shrewsbury News’ and a ‘Hudson’s Soap’ enamel sign depicting a clock face to show the ‘We close at’ time. The selection of mirrors generally related to Cadbury’s and Fry’s Chocolate whilst the icing on the cake came in the form of two very attractive Ogden’s cigarette vending cabinets. Since this is a very popular collecting field we were confident demand would be strong for this outstanding collection but even then we were amazed by the strength of the bidding on sale day. Initially estimated at an overall total of £6,000/£8,000 we were just blown away by the final result of over £22,000. Many bidders probably went home sorely disappointed as they did not even get close to buying the items they had come for - although I think we all enjoyed the buzz and excitement of the moment. Top price of the day was £3,200 paid by an Irish telephone bidder for one of the cigarette cabinets whilst the Wellington Journal enamel sign made £1,650 and the Hudson’s Soap sign made £1,300. A large Victorian ‘Cadbury’s Chocolate’ mirror made £1,250 whilst a mirrored Cadbury’s shop display wall cabinet made £980. Smiths’ next antiques sale is on the 10th May and has a special section for Fine Silver & Jewellery whilst the sale on the 14th June features Clocks and Watches. Please call 01531 821776 or visit www.smithsnewentauctions.co.uk for entry details. - Written by Rita Kearsey Manager of Smiths Auction Room at Newent

Classics at Prescott

BISHOP’S CLEEVE: Lucy Newman Independent weight-loss 07730 008443 consultants TEWKESBURY: Sam Knight

On 12th of May 2019, the Rotary Clubs of Cheltenham, Cleeve Vale and Winchcombe will once again host the ‘Classics at Prescott’ event at the iconic Hill Climb track, which is also the home of the Bugatti Owners' Club. Now in its 16th year, the event has helped raise in excess of £200k for a wide variety of local, national and international charities. The gates will open at 9am and from 10am the 200 paddock entries will drive the famous hill. A second drive will take place later in the afternoon. The event is noncompetitive, and in between drives the cars will be parked in the paddock where they can be viewed at close quarters.

There will also be a static display of classic cars in the Orchard throughout the day and at lunchtime a gentle cavalcade of these cars will 'drive the hill' so that everyone can see them in motion. Many spectators are motoring enthusiasts and drive their own prized classic cars to the event so even the car park is an interesting place to wander! A souvenir programme will be handed out to each car driver and walk-in spectator. The entry fee for cars, irrespective of the number of passengers, is £15, walk-in spectators pay £5 per person. Reduced early bird tickets are available online at www.classicsatprescott.com (click on 'Apply to take part' and save 20%). There is ample parking space on site and food will be available from several outlets.
