Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people

Dear Reader, Well, where did this year go? I can’t believe it's December already and it’s that time of year again when we embrace Christmas and all the festive fun that goes with it. Whether you go for a stroll on the Christmas market, take the children to meet Santa or enjoy a seasonal concert, there are plenty of fantastic events happening in and around the area for you to enjoy in the lead-up to Christmas. Make sure to have a look at our 'What's On' section towards the back of the magazine for more information. Christmas time is also pantomime time. This year’s production at The Everyman Theatre is 'Dick Whittington and his Cat' while The Roses Theatre in Tewkesbury is staging 'Sleeping Beauty'. I can't wait to take the kids! December is a particularly busy time for our local shops, pubs, restaurants and garden centres, many of which are open throughout the season, so please support our local businesses as much as you can this Christmas and give back to the community. Finally, I would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all of us at Glos Directories! See you next year. Best wishes,

Vicky Muller

We know your teeth are far from your mind at Christmas time! So here are some tips to see you through... • Get stuck into the cheese board, it helps to return your mouth to its natural acid balance, reducing the chance of tooth decay. • Chocolate is better than chewy sweets and is best eaten after your main meal if possible. • Always use a bottle opener to open your beer and wine, NOT YOUR TEETH! • Keep up with your daily mouth health routine.

When the festivities are over, get booked in to start the new year off with a healthy mouth. BUT I AM SCARED OF JOINING A NEW DENTIST! We do our dentistry with a *pain-free guarantee. We survey all our members after every appointment and can genuinely say that 98% of people surveyed said that we are *pain-free. Here is what Alan says: “I used to be scared and now I actually enjoy going to the dentist and most importantly, I don’t even feel the injections.” See Alan’s video on our website: www.greyholmedental.com/success-stories/

Winter Driving Tips

Iain Betson passes on some winter driving tips Stop! When snow is falling fast, don’t drive unless you really have to. In terrible weather, putting things off until conditions improve is best. Winter ailments can leave you exhausted and sluggish. If you don’t feel like you can drive safely, don’t risk it. Car maintenance Keeping the car well maintained is doubly important in winter. Worn tyres won’t hold the road in wet conditions as well as those with a good, deep tread. Make sure all exterior lights are working and that windscreen wiper blades are in good condition. Check the oil, coolant and washer fluid levels. In the wet Take simple precautions when driving in heavy rain. Slow down: the wetter the roads, the longer your braking distance, and the

heavier the rain, the worse your visibility. Drive cautiously and leave a good distance between you and the vehicle in front. In snow and ice Again, slow down and leave plenty of room between you and the vehicle in front. Use your headlights if necessary. Brake and accelerate gently. It’s not always easy to tell if you’re driving on ice, though if your tyres are making less noise than usual you may well be. If you do skid, don’t brake – you’ll lock the wheels and lose control. Instead, depress the clutch and steer into the direction of the skid. When the car straightens, steer as normal. Emergency Stopping Apply the brake, without locking the wheels. If the vehicle starts to skid, ease pressure from the pedal and then reapply. Press the clutch in just before you stop. Safe winter motoring!

FREE training course to improve communication skills & start training as a counsellor Gloucestershire Counselling Service (GCS), the leading training counselling organisation in the county, is delighted to be offering a free training course - Introduction to Listening and Counselling Skills - to the Bishop's Cleeve community, which has been funded by Tewkesbury Borough Council. The course is being offered to those living, volunteering or working in Bishop's Cleeve who might not typically have access to this type of skills training but would like to develop these essential life skills and use them for the benefit of the community. The free training is aimed at anyone who would like to improve their relationships at home or at work and develop their communication skills. For those keen to explore what is involved in counselling and maybe going on to further training, this course is for you. Volunteers in a listening role or where they support others are also eligible and encouraged to apply. As well as giving people a window into the world of counselling, the course is designed to help develop the ability to effectively listen to others – a valuable skill to bring into people’s relationships at home or at work. After all, we all

love the feeling of being listened to. The more fully we feel listened to, the more we respond. It is powerful; we fall in love with people who listen to us; we vote for people who listen to us; we buy the products and services of people who listen to us. The ability to listen is one of the most profound influencing skills available to us. Community Funding Officer, Martha Mundy comments on the Tewkesbury Borough Council’s decision to support this training event: ‘The Boroughs Community Grant Working Group awarded GCS a grant last year to run the Introduction to Listening & Counselling Skills. We are delighted to see the course being run in Bishop's Cleeve free of charge to the local community – we want to support the people that will most benefit from this training. Our Community team are happy to support community organisations with advice and support.’ GCS, who has been delivering professional training courses for over thirty years, provides a training experience on this Introduction to Listening and Counselling Skills course that combines theory and practice. As well as exploring what counselling

involves and what it takes to really listen to another, there are chances to practise these newly acquired skills. GCS offers an additional benefit of supporting those who choose to train with them with one-to-one careers consultancy in the world of counselling. Joe Patel, New Ventures General Manager at Ecotricity and a recent participant, commented on his experience of the course: ‘I learnt a lot on this course at GCS. I ‘ve always thought I had good listening skills, but this training took me so much further and it made me realise how much I wanted to develop my ability to really hear people, draw them out and communicate on a deeper level. It was a challenging experience but so rewarding and I’m keen to pass on my newly acquired skills at work.’ The course is held at the St Michael’s Centre on Thursday evenings, running over ten weeks starting on January 11th. To find out how to apply contact Jenny White or Rachael Fry at GCS: 01453 766 310 or training@gloscounselling.org.uk www.gloscounselling.org.uk

Home & Interiors Christmas Elegance

By Katherine Sorrell

It’s all too easy to go overboard at Christmas. This year, why not decorate your home with subtle glamour, creating a sophisticated seasonal backdrop to festive times with friends and family. this living room is welcoming and cosy, but also cool, calm and collected, thanks to a subtle colour scheme of greys and whites, together with touches of texture in the form of wicker, wool and wood. traditional nordmann fir, from £29.99; led warm white string lights, from £9.99; wool throw, £59.99; firwood star decoration (set of three), £44.99; Magical Hare cushion, £39.99; tree decorations, from £1.49; all dobbies.

Beautiful baubles will add class to your christmas tree. Walther & co bronze acorn and leaf decoration, £9.99, cotswold trading.

a simple white backdrop with natural, twining leaves is perfect for offsetting the glow of candles. large silver-dipped candle holder, £29.99; led glitter twig wreath, £39.99; medium silverdipped candle holder, £9.99; reindeer bell ornament, £4.99; decorated glass bauble, £3.99; garland (price and details on application); all dobbies.

Instead of a knitted or hessian sack, how about a pretty, printed fabric design? night owl christmas sack, £5.50, sophie allport.

an intriguing and subtle way to display the twinkle of fairy lights. Bo 80 led glassdomed cylinder, £13, B&Q.

a glimmer of metal is all the rage, and these minimal, slightly rusted zinc garlands satisfy the trend without adding any bling. Use along the mantelpiece, twined along the christmas table or hung on the wall. £29.95, decorator’s notebook.

Ideas for elegant festIve décor

• Too many colours together tend to look garish. Choose one main colour theme for each room and stick to it. This season, dark backdrops are very on trend, with accents of gold or brass, while white, beige or grey are classics that always look great, with dashes of red or green for that seasonal feel. • With limited colours, textures come into their own. Think linen, wool, fur (faux if you prefer), wicker and – this year’s must-haves – concrete and velvet. • For this look, avoid twee animals, anything knitted or made from felt, and all-out glitter (a little sparkle goes a long way). • Christmas ornaments tend to be collected over the years, and so can look rather haphazard if all displayed in one go. Carefully choose a selection that co-ordinates and – stay strong – put the rest back in the loft for next year. Get Real This Christmas by Pippa Greenwood

Christmas is well and truly just around the corner and whilst your thoughts may be on gifts, meals, crackers and cards, don’t forget the tree. And I mean a REAL Christmas tree, complete with needles and, if you choose the really traditional route, that wonderful aroma. For those concerned about the impact on the planet, Britishgrown trees are most definitely not an ecological disaster zone - think of them as a crop plant rather like a field of cabbages, except that typically Christmas trees will use less fertiliser and fewer chemicals than many classic crop plants. To make sure you get what suits you best, there are a few things to think about before buying your tree. The Norway spruce (Picea abies) is the traditional tree, with gorgeous, short dark green pointed needles and that unmistakable Christmassy aroma, but it is the most likely to drop its needles. However, if well treated it won’t perform badly and it is the lowest-priced of the real trees. The Serbian Spruce (Picea omorica) is quite similar to the Norway spruce and is the favourite festive tree in central Europe, with a distinct blueish tint to the underside of the

needles. Typically slender, it is a good choice for smaller sitting rooms and has decent needle retention - but no smell. The Nordmann fir (Abies nordmanniana) is now the biggest-selling Christmas tree in the UK. Its shiny green broad needles are quite soft and almost impossible to shift, so it’s ideal for those who hate mess! The Fraser fir (Abies fraseri) is less widely available, but its combination of good looks and needle-holding ability makes it worth considering. It has a narrower base than the Norway spruce so is also useful in smaller houses. So, how do you choose the best tree of the type you’ve decided on and keep it looking good? • Don’t buy a real tree too early. • Opt for a tree produced by a member of the British Christmas Tree Growers Association - look for the BCTGA logo. • Choose a tree with a good, full shape, not lopsided and with minimal gaps. Check the needles - they should be glossy (for those varieties where this is a characteristic) and the correct colour. They must be free from pests and diseases - avoid anything

yellowed or inclined to shed, or with white fluffy bits. Never buy an already netted tree since you can’t see what you’re getting! • If you buy one quite early then the most important thing is to keep it outside - recut the end of the trunk and put the tree in a bucket of water in a sheltered spot outside. Remove any net as it is important to get air circulating around the needles. • When you bring a tree inside, avoid putting it anywhere too warm or close to a heat source, and make sure that you use a stand with a water reservoir that is kept topped up. When Christmas is over, make sure you recycle your tree - many councils and garden centres now offer this service. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for great gardening gifts: a stylish ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ gift card (a perfect Christmas present, where the recipient receives their chosen garden ready vegetable plants in the spring and every week Pippa emails with topical hints, tips and advice), gardening tools, raised bed kits, GrowerFrames, signed books and more!

Remember loved ones at hospice's 'Lights of Love' event The hospice’s poignant ‘Lights of Love’ event takes place at St Matthew's Church, Clarence Road in Cheltenham on Wednesday 6th December, and everyone is warmly invited to attend. Featuring Christmas carols, choir performances and readings alongside time for remembrance and reflection, the service starts at 6.30pm followed by festive refreshments. The gathering gives the opportunity to celebrate cherished memories of loved ones, and guests are invited to write a dedication for loved ones on a special dedication candle which is displayed during the event on a special wall of light. The event is led by Hospice Chaplain Rob Pestell with readings from hospice volunteers and staff. There will also be music performances led by Lucas Bailey with songs from The Pamoja Gospel Choir and support from regular hospice volunteer Kevin O’Brien and Sue Perks. Traditional mince pies, chocolate logs, coffee and tea will be served,

and Christmas cards, Christmas decorations and happiness boxes will be on sale at the back of the church. ‘Lights of Love’ is free to attend and is open to all. Any donations given help Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice support local families who have a loved one living with a condition like cancer, heart failure, lung disease or a neurological condition with their specialist care and family support. Elise Hoadley, Director of Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice said, “Christmas is a special time for families and many of us who have lost a loved one will have treasured memories of Christmases past in our minds." “At Lights of Love, we come together in a moving and memorable way to remember, celebrate and give thanks for the lives of family and friends while helping to raise funds so we can continue to be there for local people and families who need us.

Everyone is welcome to join us.” Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice is home to the only inpatient unit with beds in Gloucestershire giving specialist hospice care alongside its family support and day services and hospiceat-home team which takes the hospice’s care and ethos out and about in people’s homes and local communities. Please register your wish to attend online to help the hospice ensure they have enough refreshments for everyone at www.sueryder.org/ leckhamptonlights Alternatively, email leckhampton.fundraising@ sueryder.org or call 01242 246285.

Stars smash £55k for hospice Walkers have reached for the stars with their fundraising efforts for Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice, raising a staggering £55,500 following on from the Starlight Hike - A Night to Remember which took place at the end of October and was sponsored by Capita. This could pay for 18 hospice nurses for a month, more than enough to pay for one nurse to provide a month of care in each of the inpatient hospice care beds in the county, which are all housed at the hospice. Matt Reay is Events Fundraiser at Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice. He said, “This is the largest amount of money our Starlight Hike event has ever raised. It will make a massive difference to those families we care for and support. As a charity, we rely on fundraising to keep our care services going. Thanks to all those walkers who turned out to be with us on the night and have been so busy fundraising before and since to raise this enormous amount of money. We are blown away by the response to the event.” The annual 10k night-time walk around Cheltenham takes walkers from St Edward's Prep School in Charlton Kings to the hospice grounds where

they can leave a message for a loved one on a wall of stars. This year Bishop's Cleeve-based Capita were the sponsors. Nikki Moss, Customer Service Manager, from Capita said, "We were delighted to be this year's main sponsor of the Starlight Hike, in aid of Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice. Working with representatives from the hospice in the build-up to this prestigious event was truly inspirational, and an absolute pleasure – the professionalism, passion and commitment on show at all times was a credit to every member of staff and volunteer, and was an excellent fit with our own corporate values.”

“We are proud to have supported such a worthwhile cause that we hold so close to our hearts here at Capita, and very much look forward to working with the hospice again in the future." Next year’s Starlight Hike will take place at St Edward's Prep School, Cheltenham on Saturday 20th October 2018 from 7.00pm. For more information on Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice visit www.sueryder.org/leckhampton.

“Many of my colleagues took part in the hike itself, as the hospice holds special memories for a large number of our people here in the Cheltenham office, so for us as a business it was very important that we were giving something back to our people, as well as Starlight Hike walkers (pictured from the night) have to the whole community Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court jumping for joy at in sponsoring the event.” the amount they've raised for the hospice charity

Cloakroom refitting with building works to accommodate a shower. “An excellent job that started and finished on time. Moreover Matt had allowed sufficient margin for including significant additional work we requested. A good team who adapted to circumstances and tried to minimise the inevitable dust and mess. Highly recommended.”
