Dear Reader, As we wave goodbye to Spring 2016, we welcome British summertime in the hope for plenty of sun, fun days out, and lots of summer fetes and picnics in the park. With the weather warming up it’s the perfect time to start getting out and about and getting some more exercise. I am going to start doing my local Parkrun every weekend, wish me luck! Over the next few weeks, you will start seeing the flags of St. George spring up everywhere to commemorate the start of Euro 2016 and expressing England’s dream of winning a tournament for the first time since 1966. June also gives us the perfect excuse to enjoy some delicious strawberries and cream and the odd Pimms or two while we enjoy the start of the Wimbledon fortnight. (This is also the time of year I take up tennis very seriously)! Ten Tips for Written Communication – Misery or Joy? Written communication has a long lasting effect because it can be read over and over again. It can reignite joy and bitterness. In my years of consultancy work, I have seen the written word cause more aggression, drama and strikes than any other means of communication. The written word, if there is any ambiguity, will always be read negatively. You must write, not so you are understood, but so you cannot be misunderstood. Although communicating by letter has decreased considerably in recent years, using email which of course also requires people to spell and use grammar correctly, has increased. If you want to have real impact and show that you care, a letter or card can be the most powerful way of winning friends and influencing people. In the business world those who want an appointment with a decision maker should write a letter first and then follow up with a phone call. So here are a few tips to help make your written word more effective: 1. Firstly, attract attention with an attention getting word, phrase or line, for example ‘Here is some good news’. Always try to get something positive either on your subject matter or your first words that will illicit the response ‘I want to hear what you have to say’. 2. Keep it short. More and more people are getting emails on their mobiles so long emails can be hard to read, try and stick to 2 or 3 paras and 2 to 3 sentences per para. This also applies to letters; short letters get read. 3. Don’t criticise or be negative. This is the biggest cause of communication breakdown,

aggression and stress. If this is necessary, speak don’t write. 4. Read before sending. Never send an email or a letter without reading it all through before sending and ask yourself, if you got this how would you feel? 5. Choose the right time. Never send an email or letter in response to anger or frustration caused by one you may have received without first giving yourself time. A great tip, don’t send an email overnight, draft it reread it and then send it the next day. 6. Check spelling and grammar. This is so easy with spellcheck, as otherwise you will lose respect and trust. 7. Use key words. There are certain key words that have great power when we read them, they will also generate pleasure in the reader. “you” “your” and “mine” the reader reads them as “I”, “me” and “my”. 8. Look for the opportunity to send nice messages with positive content, something that shows you care. It’s interesting how Twitter is declining because it’s all about ME! 9. Be careful with attachments. Again so much of our communication is on the mobile and it is more difficult to read attachments this way. 10. Don’t ‘cc’. If there is not an essential need to know, don’t waste other people’s time by copying them.

Memories of 50 Years Ago by Ted Bruning

I’ve just found my cheque book. It wasn’t easy because the last time I used it was in July, when I bought a car, and in fact the last time I used it before then was Christmas 2013 when I ran out of ideas for presents and gave my kids cheques instead. Oh, and in my pocket I have £1.56... What does all this have to do with anything? Well, on 29th June 1966, Barclay’s Bank launched Britain’s first credit card (the Barclaycard, since you ask), and money as I and others of my vintage once knew it has been dying ever since. The credit card and its contemporary, the charge card, were responses to the illusion that cash and money was the same thing. Despite the fact that the Lombards had disproved the idea centuries earlier by providing international credit facilities in which limitless sums could be moved around without anyone so much as sniffing a ducat, people in the post-War age still had to carry cash to cover all their spending. And in post-War America, spending was getting more and more extravagant. One of the luxuries the newlyrich post-War Americans were starting to spend more and more

lavishly on was dining out; and the first charge card, Diner’s Club, enabled them to do just that. If you didn’t customarily carry enough cash to pay for a blow-out for yourself and all your friends – or for yourself and that one special friend – and provided you had a fat enough salary, all you had to do was pay an annual fee and your card would cover the bill at any participating restaurant. It wasn’t credit, though – the balance had to be cleared in full every month. Diner’s Club launched with 200 members and 27 participating restaurants; by the end of the year it had 20,000 members and other high-value retailers were clamouring to be allowed in. Finders Services, launched in Britain in 1951, was a straightforward copy; it was swallowed up by Diners Club in 1962, and in 1963 American Express, another charge card operation, arrived in the UK too. (Barclaycard also had an American connection: it was a franchisee of the Bank of America’s BankAmericard scheme, later rebranded as Visa). At first, Barclaycard and its rivals were similar in operation: since extended credit was illegal in Britain until 1968 you had to clear your Barclaycard every month, just as with Diners Club and American Express. But it was always intended to be more democratic than the charge cards, which were aimed at the well-off and the prestige trades. It didn’t charge a fee, for a start; there was no salary

qualification but there was a credit limit; and given Barclay’s established position in the UK it was accepted by a much, much greater number and variety of retailers. Without going into too much detail, here’s how plastic has fared in those 50 years. 1969: the cheque card arrives. 1972: the Access credit card is a co-operative of several banks. 1987: the debit card is born. 1995: debit card transactions exceed credit card transactions. 1998: debit card transactions exceed cheque transactions. 2004: plastic overtakes cash. One could go on, but you get the picture. Plastic rules. Which raises a question I’m qualified to ask but not answer? What exactly is money? It’s clearly not the pennies like cartwheels I took to the sweetshop as a child. It’s not a fistful of fivers, either: a fiver isn’t really a fiver at all; it’s just a picture of a fiver. Money as a reflection of itself? It’s no more ephemeral a concept than money as a seemingly endless chain of electronic ones and zeroes. And if money doesn’t really exist, why can’t I have more of it?

Cake and Bake Cheese, Onion & Pepper Quiche This rich and creamy quiche can be served warm with new potatoes and coleslaw for a filling supper, but is just as tasty served cold as part of a picnic, packed lunch or summer buffet.

Ingredients: • 250g shortcrust pastry • 1 tbsp olive oil • 1 onion, peeled and very finely chopped • 4 large eggs • 200ml crème fraiche • 150ml double cream • Large pinch of grated nutmeg • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 75g mature Cheddar cheese, grated • 25g Gruyere cheese, grated • 1 red pepper, deseeded and sliced

Serves 6 - 8 Ready in 1 hour 40 mins

TIP

You can freeze this quiche for up to 2 months. Allow to cool completely then wrap either the whole quiche or individual slices in foil.

1. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface

and use to line a 20cm fluted loose based flan tin (it should be at least 4cm deep). Trim off the excess pastry and prick the base all over with a fork. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.

2. Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan/Gas 6.

Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up. Line the chilled pastry case with baking paper and baking beans. Place the flan tin on the baking sheet in the oven and bake blind for 15 minutes. Remove the paper and beans and bake for a further 5-6 minutes until the pastry is crisp and pale golden. Reduce the oven temperature to 190C/170C fan/Gas 5.

3. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a frying pan and fry

the chopped onion for 8-10 minutes until very soft. Drain on kitchen paper. Whisk the eggs in large jug then whisk in the crème fraiche and double cream. Add the nutmeg and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

4. Spread the fried onions in the pastry case and scatter over the Cheddar cheese. Gently pour in the egg mixture and top with the pepper slices. Scatter over the Gruyere cheese. Bake for 25-35 minutes or until the filling is set and golden brown. Serve warm or cold.

I’ve Seen That Face Before Iain Betson muses on indivualism in car design I was at a Lamborghini showroom recently. To the uninformed, the range of wedge nosed supercars look pretty identical: low slung bodies, smears of tyres on big wheels and front ends consisting of geometric angles. A few days later, I noticed that the front end of the new shape Audi TT reminded me of a Lamborghini - Audi have also opted for the angular theme. This similarity is not surprising, since both marques are part of the Volkswagen group and probably share the same design bureau, as well as the same wind tunnel and CAD software. And that’s a shame. Because, whilst I accept a car manufacturer’s desire for a “signature motif” throughout their range, by the

time a car designer has been given a brief that they must include the company badge, have a wheel in each corner, seat five adults, comply with safety regulations and then have their work tweaked by the wind-tunnel engineers and CAD operators, the chances of today’s cars having a unique shape are fairly slim. Check out the current Peugeot 208 and Vauxhall’s Corsa to see what I mean. I reckon the last truly new shape in mass-market cars was Ford’s Sierra. The difference between its Cortina predecessor and offerings from Ford’s rivals was massive. Before then, most cars were the classic “three-box” shape of engine, passenger compartment and boot. The Sierra seemed to blend all this into one smooth line. It’s a shame there seems little room for individualism now. I mean, wouldn’t you like to see the happy face of a Messerschmitt Bubble car or, better still, a shape so removed from the Lambos of today, the smooth lines of an “Italian Job” Miura? I know I would.

Gloucestershire Golf Club raises over £200,000 for local hospice Back in 1987 a Cheltenham family started a charity golf day at their local golf club to raise funds for the hospice which provided care to their parents. Some 27 years later the event at Cleeve Hill Golf Club has raised over £200,000 for Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice, supporting local people and their families at a time they need it most. Founded by the Farrel family in response to the care their parents received at Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice in 1987, the money raised over the years has helped install new telephone systems so patients could chat to their families, hydraulic beds, new curtains and blinds and much more. Donations from the 2015 tournament secured a hoist for use in the Day Hospice and purchased plants bringing a new centre bed to life in the hospice courtyard which was planted last month. The charity day is a well-known fixture on golfing calendars, and the 28th tournament event takes place this year on Saturday 11th June at Cleeve Hill Golf Club. Members and non-members alike are invited to compete for The Sue Ryder Rose Bowl at the magnificent golf course encompassing the highest point of the Cotswolds.

Entries are welcome in doubles or as a team of four at £25 a head, including meal and charity auction, all to help raise funds for the local hospice. Tackling Troublesome Weeds by Pippa Greenwood Why is it that weeds always seem to grow faster and more vigorously than pretty well anything you actually choose to plant in your garden? Top of my weed hate list is hairy bittercress (Cardamine hirsuta), which produces a little rosette of leaves topped with a short spike with tiny white flowers, and I despise it because it spreads so quickly. Weeds are typically described as ‘any plant which is growing in the wrong place’ such as your flowerbeds, your vegetable garden, your shrubbery or your lawn. So what makes weeds such a nuisance? • They feed and take up moisture in great quantities and sometimes compete actively with nearby garden plants. • They can create shade and stunt the growth of nearby plants. • Those with a ground-cover like effect can cause the growth of garden plants to be distorted or held back. • Weeds may harbour pests or diseases. So what can you do to try to minimise the problems they cause without spending hours with a hoe or sprayer? • Get on top of weeds early in the year - removing as many as possible before your garden plants start to grow

strongly makes weeding easier and cuts down on the amount of competition the weeds cause. A hoe is one of the quickest ways to effectively kill off most annual weeds, but it needs to be a good one. Disturb the soil as little as possible when you weed to prevent dormant weed seeds from germinating. Some people avoid anything other than an early weeding and a late weeding, as they find that regular weeding seems to bring more seeds to the surface and encourages germination. Remove your weeds before they set seed. Avoid composting any weeds which are setting seed, have set seed or have particularly pernicious and resilient roots (dock and dandelion are classic examples of these). When removing deep-rooted weeds such as dock and dandelion, always make sure that you take out every fragment of root, as each piece left behind has the potential to form a new plant. Don’t take a short cut by rotovating ground which is

heavily infested with weeds such as dandelions, docks, nettles or couch grass, as you’ll be chopping up their roots and helping to create more plants! • If you want to sow annuals or vegetable crops directly and minimise later problems with weeds, then try the stale seedbed technique. Prepare the area you intend to sow well in advance of your proposed seed sowing date, which allows dormant weed seeds to germinate; remove the weed seedlings and then sow or plant up as you wish. This should give you fewer problems later on. • Many weeds can be kept at bay if you cover the soil surface with two to three inches (5 – 7.5 cm) of mulch. • Use weedkillers with caution and ensure you choose one appropriate for the problem you have. Weedkillers are designed to kill off plants and they can do a lot of damage if allowed to contaminate your garden. Q. What if I’m a nontaxpayer who doesn’t have £1,060 to pass across? It still works, it’s just a bit more complex if the nontaxpayer is earning just under the £10,600 threshold. This is because you have to transfer £1,060 of your allowance to take advantage – nothing more, nothing less. So let’s do another example. Suppose Fred is a basic rate taxpayer married to Wilma who earns £10,000 a year, so she’s only got £600 left of her tax free allowance. She can still move £1,060 to Fred, so he gains £212 on that amount.

That lowers her allowance to £9,540, but she earns £10,000 so she’ll pay basic 20% tax on the £440 – meaning she is £88 worse off. Overall, though they’re still up over £100. If you don’t get the maths, don’t worry, you’re always collectively up by doing this, so if you’re a non-taxpayer, even close to the limit it’s still worth applying. This month the Friends of Bishop’s Cleeve Primary Academy have handed the page over to the newest and youngest recruits to the school newspaper. In their own words, this is what they had to say: It was healthy living week at Bishop’s Cleeve Primary Academy. In healthy living week we learn about healthy things such as exercise and Fruity Friday. On Tuesday, John Willis came to our school to tell us about his Olympic sports challenge. John is aiming to try all 34 Olympic events. John was born with no arms and legs. He says his arms are like Winnie the Pooh’s arms and calls them paws. When John was at school he wasn’t allowed to play sports and had to go to a different school. His favourite school subject was history and his talent is drawing. In our assembly John shared three pictures that he had drawn; a wolf, a lion and his favourite a horse. The horse was made up of lots of dots. His drawings were excellent, the school loved his pictures. At the end of the assembly John showed us some of his tools. The first was a zip puller, which was like a hook placed on his paw. The next tool was to help him do up buttons, it was shaped like a balloon on a rod. The last one was a hockey stick with special straps. John did not do sport at school, except the occasional crab football. Crab football is where you go on your hands and feet

He was not allowed to do sport because the people at his school didn’t know how to include him.

John is practicing for his challenge every day. World Blood Donor Day

World Blood Donor Day on 14th June is an annual World Health Organisation event. This year’s campaign celebrates blood donors, highlighting the idea that blood connects us all. It seeks to raise awareness of the need for regular blood donation, inspiring more people to become blood donors. Why Should You Give Blood? It’s easy to find reasons not to donate, but also easy to assume blood will be available if we need it. However, in the UK we need over 6,000 people to give blood every day to meet our needs; around 67% is used to treat medical conditions, 27% in surgery (including emergencies) and 6% to treat blood loss after childbirth. Who Can Give Blood? If you’re fit, healthy, aged 16 to 66 and weigh over 7 stone 12lbs or 50kg, you should be able to start donating blood. Men can give blood every 3 months and women, every 4 months.

However, some things can affect your eligibility, such as organ transplantation, travel to certain countries and existing medical conditions. You can check your eligibility on the NHS webpage www. blood.co.uk/who-can-giveblood. Preparing To Give Blood You can register online at www.blood.co.uk, by calling 0300 123 2323, or at a blood donation session. To donate, book an appointment or drop in at your next local session. To make your donation as comfortable as possible, ensure that beforehand you: • Eat regularly. • Get a good night’s sleep. • Drink plenty of fluids (but avoid alcohol for 24 hours). • Wear loose, comfortable clothing. • Avoid unusually strenuous exercise. • Know your medical and travel history. What Happens When You Donate Blood Pre-booked appointments shouldn’t take over an hour; take a friend or book to distract you if you’re nervous. You’ll be given a drink to keep you hydrated. Your identity and health check details will be confirmed, and your iron levels will be checked by testing blood from your finger. A small cuff is placed on your arm to maintain a light pressure and the donation site will be cleaned with

antiseptic before the needle, connected to a blood bag with your unique donor number, is inserted. A special scale constantly measures your donated blood until the 470ml mark is reached, which usually takes 5-10 minutes. You shouldn’t feel any pain. Once the needle is removed, a sterile dressing is applied to your arm. After Your Donation You should keep the pressure roll on for 30 minutes and the dressing on for 6 hours. You’ll be sent to the refreshment area to relax and encouraged to have a snack and at least 2 drinks before you leave. You should avoid having a hot bath and using your donation arm for anything strenuous for the rest of the day. Most people feel fine, but if you feel dizzy, sick, hot or shaky, drink plenty of fluid and lie down until you feel better. If bleeding recurs, sit down, raise your arm and press on the area until it stops. If you become unwell (other than a cold or cold sore) within 2 weeks, or believe there’s a reason your blood shouldn’t be used, you should call 0300 123 2323. Become a Lifesaver Think of saving a life and you probably imagine rescuing someone from an accident or a fire. But by becoming a blood donor, you could save a life every time you donate. 33rd annual Tewkesbury Medieval Festival Just as they did in 1471, the roar of canon, the clash of swords, and the shouts of fighting men will echo over the Tewkesbury Battle Field, as the 33rd annual Tewkesbury Medieval Festival takes place on July 9th/10th.

Children can enjoy learning simple circus skills, or taking part in historically themed arts and crafts in the Bright Knight Tent or a quiet break at the magical Story Tellers Garden.

When they are not fighting many of several thousand re-enactors and their families will live for the weekend in living history camps where you are welcome to visit them.

This year, we have a visit from Mad Cap Theatre who will be performing at various sites. The large beer tent with its wide range of real beers and ales, and for a real taste of history, mead, will have live music all day, and possibly a visit from the lovely gypsy dancers. Hunger pangs can be taken care of by a wide range of caterers.

Even Plantagenet King Edward, and his rival for the throne, Queen Margaret of Anjou, welcome visitors to their sumptuous camps. Away from the battle site there is a big and bustling medieval market, full of leather, metal and wood workers, costumiers, jewellers, potters and sellers of all kinds of exotic and unusual goods. Minstrels, jesters, stilt walkers and

Longer days mean it’s time to head out to the garden. However large or small your outside space, some careful planning will ensure that it is flexible enough for playing games, entertaining or simply putting your feet up and relaxing, writes Katherine Sorrell Today’s gardens are more like an outdoor room, used for playing, cooking, socialising and resting; they are multifunctional spaces that look good but also work hard for every member of the family. If your garden is in need of an update, the secret is in the planning - how will you use the space and what do you want from it? Sketch a plan of your garden on graph paper, and gather samples of the materials you intend to use – such as slate, willow or terracotta – to ensure that they coordinate. If in doubt, consider

In a large garden, the ideal layout includes separate areas for dining, relaxing and playing – perhaps with a ‘secret’ children’s area at the far end, including structures such as a swing, trampoline, climbing frame or tepee. A peaceful area away from both the house and the kids is ideal for a hammock or a deck chair – perhaps near some scented flowers or under a tree for shade. And the dining area is best closest to the house, with space nearby for a barbecue or even an outdoor kitchen. Consider changes in levels – they add interest and are easier to deal with than slopes, but avoid lots of steps between the door and the dining table. Flooring is key, too - will you choose stone slabs, gravel, bricks, decking, wood chips or perhaps tiles that complement your kitchen flooring for an inside-outside look? Just like indoors, your choice of garden flooring can signal a change from one area to another. It is also a question of practicality and cost: specify stone slabs for the dining area, for example, and save money with woodchips in the children’s play area. Verticals are just as important, providing privacy, screening and dividing, adding visual

interest and offering places for climbers to grow. Think about fences, hedges, walls, arches, arbours and pergolas – a simple metal archway over a path entwined with fragrant honeysuckle makes a lovely focal point, while a small wooden pergola can link two different areas of the garden and offer a shady spot to sit in. Finally, furniture. Consider waterproof upholstery, outdoor sofas and all-weather rattan, choosing designs and colourways that link with the whole space. You can even accessorise outdoor sofas with scatter cushions and interior throws or blankets for when it gets chilly. If space is restricted, opt for folding furniture and play equipment that can be put away, or build seating into your hard landscaping – an extra-wide low wall makes a great bench seat and you can even build in hinged storage for cushions. The time is right to start planning your stunning summer garden, and creating more useable space outdoors is far more economical than a new basement or roof conversion – in fact, turning outdoor space into an extra outdoor room may add value to your property. The terrace is not normally open to the public. The gardens are located throughout Winchcombe; tickets are available in Winchcombe on the day in the gardens themselves (look for the red flag outside the house), at the Winchcombe Tourist Information Centre and outside the library. Parking is available at the Back Lane car park or at the car park in Bull Lane. Admission: £5.00 for adults, children under 12 are free. Proceeds for the event go to the conservation of St. Peter's Church.
