Less is more (sort of)! If you regularly read the editor’s letter, you’ll be used to seeing Vicky’s face each time. But Vicky has now moved onto pastures new and so this month’s letter comes from me, Anne Golldack.

a metaphorical diet and revamped the features. It’s not that there’s less, it’s just that we’ve asked our contributors to bea little more succinct in their writing.

I’ve actually been working at Glos Directories for many years and produce the magazines anyway so in many ways it makes more sense if I’m the one saying ‘read all about it’.

So as ever this month you’ll find groups and clubs, events, local news but also some new features, including a lovely short story. Finally this time, a ‘thanks’ to our lovely advertisers who make this magazine possible. There are some great businesses operating in this area so please do use them when you can.

There are some changes in the magazine this month to let you know about. Firstly we’ve found over the last couple of years we’ve been getting more and more local information, charity requests and groups features. We want to include it all – it’s hard to say no – but in order to do so I’ve been making the text smaller and smaller. A couple of people had said they found it a little hard to read, so we’ve gone on

Short Story Precious By Jackie Brewster Dan leaned against a lamp post covered in posters, watching the house at number fifteen. The curtains were drawn and the place seemed deserted. If Alan was the creature of habit that Dan thought he was, any moment now he’d be returning home with his tray of chips and a battered sausage.

know you’re okay.”

Alan had dropped Dan’s sisterin-law, Pam, off on New Year’s Day, with the promise to come and collect her the day after. He hadn’t been seen since.

Alan’s face crumpled. “I’ve done something unforgiveable,” he said.

“Do you think they’ve had a row?” Dan had asked his wife Amy. “Pam’s being tight-lipped,” Amy said. “She just flops on the settee all day eating your chocolate liqueurs and sniffing.” Dan would never describe Alan as much of a catch, but he felt compelled to reunite these two lovebirds - if nothing else, just to get his sofa back. On cue, a shadowy figure crept through the shadows and slipped through the doorway into number fifteen. Dan crossed the road and hammered on the door.

The door creaked open and Alan stood in the hallway holding his battered sausage. “Is Pam alright?” he asked, taking a bite. “She’s worried about you,” Dan said. “We all are.”

Dan’s heart sank. Was he going to be stuck with his sister-in-law indefinitely? “Tell me what it is,” he asked calmly. “I’m sure we can fix it.” “Pammy mustn’t know,” Alan said desperately. “I can’t promise you that.” Dan followed Alan into the lounge. “Just tell me what’s happened.” “I need more time.” Alan perched on the arm of the sofa and regarded his chips mournfully. “Time for what?” Dan said. “For the cat’s fur to grow back,” Alan said miserably. “I beg your pardon?” Dan said.

There was no answer. The letter box was wedged open with a copy of the same poster about a missing sphynx cat that had been stapled to the lamp post. He pushed it to one side and shouted, “Alan, it’s Dan, I know you’re in there.” There was silence. “I’m not interested in what’s gone on between you and Pam,” he called. “I just want to Page 6

The hall light came on.

“I went out for a few ales with Dufty after I dropped Pam off.” Alan ate another chip. “And the next morning I discovered I’d shaved Precious.” “Do you mean Pam’s cat?” Dan asked in surprise. “Yes, Precious the cat,” Alan nodded. “I’d shaved all her fur off. No idea why. I don’t even remember doing it.” His shoulders heaved. “I’ve made her a little jumper.”

Dan felt a powerful urge to laugh. “Alan, Precious is at our house with Pam,” he said gently. “You brought her in her basket, remember?” Through the cat flap climbed a fierce looking bald cat wearing a ragged tube sock. Dan looked at the cat, and the cat scowled back. “If that’s not Precious,” Alan said nervously, “what is it?” “It’s a sphynx cat.” Dan crouched down and examined the cat’s collar. “Her owners have been looking for her.” “I’ve shaved a stranger’s cat!” Alan wailed. Dan was about to explain that sphynx cats were supposed to be hairless when he stopped himself. “I can fix this for you. No one need ever know,” he said instead. “But first, phone Pam and beg her to come home.” “I owe you Dan.” Alan licked ketchup off his fingers. Staring warily at the cat he picked up his phone. Yes you do, thought Dan, and said, “A box of chocolate liqueurs would be a good place to start.”

Councillors Corner By Cllr Paul McCloskey, Charlton Kings Last month, I attended a fascinating presentation from Highways England in Gloucester. From December this year, the toll charges on the Severn Bridges will be discontinued. This will change the traffic flows across the Severn bridges and it is estimated that traffic into Wales will increase by 25 - 30%. The meeting was about the top strategic infrastructure priorities for Gloucestershire. The top three are the missing A417 link and upgrades to M5 junction 10 and 9. Improving junctions 10 and 9 will also increase motorway usage, so how do we get the much-needed upgrades and yet keep the traffic moving on the M5? Part of the solution is a ‘smart motorway’, which uses the hard shoulder as an extra lane. After the meeting, there was just sufficient time for me to escape from the Shire Hall to my favourite eating spot – the Cathedral Coffee Shop. They have lovely food and the tranquillity

provides an opportunity to reflect. Even in the worst weather, you can walk around the cloisters just as the monks did centuries ago. After lunch, we discussed the possibility of making the Cotswolds a National Park. The meeting was held just around the time when Stephen Hawking sadly passed away. His medical condition forced him to radically change the way he processed information. We all need new ways of thinking if we are to meet the challenges ahead (driverless cars for instance). We aren’t closing Boots Corner, we are re-connecting the High Street - doesn’t that sound more positive?

East and West 1. Which body of water is known by names that translate as "the East Sea" in Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands and by a name that translates as "the West Sea" in Estonia? 2. Which country was known as the Dutch East Indies when it made its first and only appearance at a FIFA World Cup in 1938? 3. What is the most westerly capital city in mainland Europe? 4. Which other English county borders both East Sussex and West Sussex? 5. What are the names of the two rival gangs in West Side Story? 6. In which county would you find the town of Lowestoft, which is the most easterly settlement in the UK? 7. What name did the Western Allies use to refer to the best-known crossing point between East Berlin and West Berlin during the Cold War? 8. The term West Bank is normally used to refer to a region in the Middle East that lies to the west of which river? 9. What is the name of the local London Underground station in EastEnders?... Walford East or Walford West? 10. If you flew due east from Edinburgh airport, what would be the first country you would fly over after leaving Scotland?

Cheltenham Lions Club By David Green, Club PRO After Lions Clubs International celebrated 100 years of service in February, members of the Cheltenham Club carried on the good work and managed to collect ÂŁ1396.67 for Marie Curie at Morrisons, Hatherley. It's a great cause that all Lions Clubs throughout the country support. Thanks to everyone who donated! The Easter Egg Raffle, now in its third year, was also a great success. 46 eggs were raffled at pubs and venues throughout Cheltenham and Tewkesbury. Some of the money will

help buy equipment for Tewkesbury Hospital. Forthcoming events include plant sales in Charlton Kings (5th May) and at the Exmouth Arms, Bath Road (26th May), with proceeds going to Cotswold Riding for the Disabled. Club members will also attend the British Heart Foundation Bike Ride at the Racecourse on 13th May, providing administration and stewardship. In addition, the club is organising a charity concert featuring the Treorchy Male Choir, which will take place at the Roses Theatre in Tewkesbury on 19th May. A donation from this will go to the Oncology Unit at Cheltenham Hospital to help purchase Prostate Cancer Equipment. The club's holiday caravan is now open, offering breaks to local disabled people. It is almost fully booked for the season but anyone who knows of a child or family that would benefit from a break, please contact Gerry Mitchell on 01242 242867.

One of the best ways that town centres can continue to thrive is for like-minded businesses to work together but how could some of Cheltenham’s biggest stores like Cavendish House and Boots link with independents as wide-ranging as Laura Leigh Hairdressers, Margaret Dabbs and Tokyo Tattoo? Throw in some of our best out-of-town hotels like Cowley Manor, Ellenborough Park and Hatherley Manor Hotel and the connection becomes even more blurred. But I’m delighted to say that we’ve got all these great businesses coming together for the very first Cheltenham Beauty Week, being run by Cheltenham BID from April 21- 28. Businesses of all kinds will have the opportunity to celebrate all things beauty; from style to fashion and individual products to pamper sessions. Spas, nail bars, gyms and barbers are also likely to be involved.

It means that shoppers and visitors to the town alike are in line for a huge range of offers, discounts and events from more than 30 businesses. The hotels will link up with shops in the town centre and provide one-off demonstrations that haven’t been seen before. The BID will be promoting the week with a #FeelingGood campaign. We want the week to be as much about how good it can be to be part of this town as about the products on offer. The new Miss Cheltenham and previous winners of the title will be involved as well, calling in at Cavendish House as it kicks off its events with a launch party in the store on Saturday April 21. - By Kevan Blackadder, Cheltenham BID Director

Chalk Talk In the 1980s Guinness ad execs told us that “good things come to those who wait”. They were talking about beer of course, but they might just as well have been referring to the proposals to fix the notorious A417 bottleneck at the Air Balloon. Public consultation has been running since February and closed at the end of March. Thank you to everyone who has taken part or written to me directly. It’s difficult to over-estimate the importance of this scheme. It represents a once-ina-generation opportunity to save lives, generate jobs and end traffic misery for tens of thousands. The sums involved are vast. The £500 million price tag represents over 16% of the total annual £3 billion roads budget for the whole country. That’s a whopping proportion earmarked for Gloucestershire. And after our recent successes winning millions of pounds for Cheltenham’s cyber park, secondary schools funding, town centre housing and vital homelessness reduction projects, I’m proud that Cheltenham has once again been made a national priority.

the plans at Prime Minister’s Questions. Now I know there are some who are still arguing for a tunnel but with a cost put conservatively at £1 billion it’s a non-starter. There’s no conceivable way that one-third of the total UK annual roads budget could be allocated to a single scheme and it would inevitably fail viability assessments. No, we have to be pragmatic. We’ve won an enormous sum and it’s time to get behind a shortlisted option. Then let’s get on and build this road. Or in the language of another advertising slogan, “Just Do It”.

It’s been a long slog to get this far. But with the support of local people, we’ve got it back on track. Since 2015 I have held seven meetings with transport ministers to press for this scheme, as well as numerous round tables with Highways Agency engineers. And only a matter of weeks ago I was delighted that Theresa May confirmed to me she backed Page 22

April sees the return of not one but two popular festivals: the Cheltenham Wine Festival will be back on the 7th (tickets for the ‘Grand Tasting’ are still available) and Prescott Bike Festival will take place on the 14th and 15th. The latter incorporates a Gin and Jazz Festival this year, which lets you choose from over 50 types of gin.

Cheltenham Calendar - By Olivia Scull -

If you can't get enough of horse racing, then look out for the April meeting on the 17th and 18th. These weekday fixtures are a great way to see some brilliant racing on the cheap.

April is here and after a snowy March, I’m sure we are all looking forward to some sunshine! If you fancy a traditional Easter-themed hunt, then there is plenty on offer. Slimbridge Wetland Centre, for example, is holding a Giant Easter Duck Hunt throughout the first two weeks of April and Puzzlewood is staging Easter egg hunts until the 4th. It’s also lambing season so if feeding adorable baby lambs sounds good to you, then head to Cotswold Farm Park!

I've also got some great news for theatre lovers – there is a new theatre on the scene! The Barn Theatre down the road in Cirencester debuts with 'The Secret Garden' this month, which runs until the 15th of April. Meanwhile, the Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham continues to put on fantastic shows such as 'Gangsta Granny', which will run from the 4th (I have seen it, I have no shame. It is fantastic for all ages!). You can find more of my work and reviews of shows, plays, etc. on my blog www.watchingfromthecheapseats. wordpress.com
