A SUMMER OF MEMORIES This month’s editor’s note comes from me, Sarah. I work with Anne at Glos Directories and have done so for several years, so I thought it’s time for me to introduce myself to you, our lovely readers. My goodness, it’s August already! As the schools have broken up for their long summer break, I’m hoping we keep this lovely weather so us parents and kids can make the most of it.
I used to be sent out in the morning after a hearty breakfast and was told not to come back until tea time. Oh, the things we got up to! Building dens, climbing trees and swimming in the river to name but a few. Many a time I would come home to my mum looking bedraggled with scratches on my elbows and knees. Those memories will stay with me forever.
It can be hard to find things to do to keep children entertained, particularly if you work, but a planned day out is always great to have in the diary. How about the Linc Superhero Fun Run, for example? It takes place on 19th August, raises vital funds for charity and promises fun for all the family. Or why not leave the kids at home for a night out to watch The South perform live at Gloucester Guildhall? Enter our competition on page 10 for a chance to win free tickets.
Whilst children today are often drawn to their Xbox or PS4, it really doesn’t take that much to distract them if there’s something better to do. Take a look at the What’s On section in the back of this magazine for some ideas on what you could do with your family this summer. We’ll see you in September when it’ll be nearly Chri… (no, I’m not going to say it!).
When I was a child (a long time ago now!),

Congratulations! To Bridget Groom, who is the lucky winner of the family ticket to the Cotswold Farm Park. Have a great time! Thanks for everyone who took part in our competition. Sorry you didn't win on this occasion, but we've got a little something to cheer you up – take the children to the Farm Park free of charge during August with this voucher:
Replicated vouchers will not be accepted. No cash alternative. Cannot be used with any other offers, including online tickets. One use only. Valid until 02/09/2018.

Short Story
Stanley’s Toenails By Jackie Brewster “Did you bring the sausages?” Peggy whispered, opening the caravan door. “Course,” Susan said, “are you going to let me in?” Susan was not in the best of moods. Her mum and Stanley were at the seaside for their honeymoon, and this was the third time she’d had to drive over to see them.
“Thank you, Stanley,” she said firmly. ”Mother, I’d like a word in private.” “There isn’t anywhere private,” Peggy said. “It’s a static.”
“What’s up this time?” she sighed. “It sounded pretty urgent.”
“Let’s step outside,” Susan insisted.
“It’s him.” Peggy nodded towards Stanley who was hunched over a jigsaw.
“Are they going to drop off?” Stanley called as Susan shut the door behind them.
“He’s got something wrong with his toenails.” “What sort of something?” Susan said. “They’re a funny colour.” Peggy lit the grill. “Are you ready for a sausage cob, Stanley?” “I was born ready,” Stanley said, rubbing his belly. “Let’s have a look at these toenails first, shall we?” Susan said, “Pop your feet up on the couch Stanley.”
Peggy tutted and removed her apron.
Once out of earshot, Susan turned to Peggy. “Three times you’ve dragged me out here,” she said. “What’s all this about?” “That first time I’d forgotten my readers,” Peggy said. “And the second time?” Susan said. “When you thought there was a mouse?” “Just because you couldn’t find it didn’t mean there wasn’t one,” Peggy said.
With much grunting Stanley obliged. At the sight of his toenails, Susan grimaced. Every nail was the colour of creosote.
“Maybe,” Susan nodded, “but can you tell me why Stanley has got brown sauce on his toenails?”
“That is odd,” she agreed. “Have you dropped something on them?”
“Sauce?” Peggy feigned surprise.
“I don’t recall. I woke up like this.” He wiggled his toes. “They don’t hurt or nothing.” Susan studied the toenails and frowned. She reluctantly gave them a sniff. She 6
touched one with her fingertip. It was sticky.
“I’m guessing you put it there,” Susan said. “Why would I do a thing like that?” “Is someone keeping an eye on the sausages?” Stanley popped his head out the window.
“They’re lovely Susan, from the butcher’s on the parade.”
“So?” Susan said. “He liked them so much he keeps asking for more,” Peggy moaned, “and there isn’t even a butcher’s on the parade.”
“Just give them a turn, Stan,” Peggy called irritably. “What does he mean – the butcher’s on the parade?” Susan said. “I brought those sausages just like you asked me to, like I’ve done every time.”
“Mum, you’ve got to own up,” Susan sighed.
“Hush,” Peggy whispered, “Stanley doesn’t know.”
Susan laughed. “He’d be right, wouldn’t he?”
“Don’t tell me you’ve dragged me all the way out here just to bring sausages?” Susan folded her arms. “Don’t be cross, Susie.” Peggy patted her daughter’s hand. “When we got here I needed a bit of time to myself, so I went for a walk. And when I got back I said I’d been to fetch sausages. I didn’t want to offend him, you see. I just cooked up the sausages I’d brought from home.”
LANDSCAPING DRIVEWAYS PATIOS
“He’ll think he’s married a compulsive liar,” Peggy said.
“I’ll tell him the butcher has sold out,” Peggy offered, “but what about his toenails?” “Have him paddle in the sea,” Susan suggested. “It’ll wash off and he’ll think he’s cured.” “You’re a lifesaver.” Peggy gave her daughter a squeeze. “I’d better get back to Stanley’s sausages.” “You’re welcome Mum,” Susan smiled. “Don’t forget to ask him if he wants brown sauce.”

A NEW LOOK FOR OUTLOOK A group to bring sight-impaired people of Gloucestershire together is getting a makeover and looking out for new members. Outlook enables people with a sight impairment to experience a wide range of social and sporting activities. From pub quizzes to rock climbing, Outlook does it all. Our most popular events include bowling, meals out and walks in the park. Although the group aims to be a place for sight-impaired folk to get together, Outlook is primarily about making friends and having a good time, regardless of how much we can or can't see. People with a sight problem often feel isolated,
so we want to break down the barriers to socialising with an everyone's-welcome attitude. Whether you're adventurous or prefer something more relaxed, the group could be a great place to meet some outgoing, fun-loving people. For more information, contact Megan Paul on meganpaul12@outlook.com or 07479 363027.

KEEPING SAFE AT THE BEACH THIS SUMMER Most beachgoers will have an enjoyable and relaxing time when they visit the beach this summer. So when something goes wrong, who can help? RNLI Lifeboat Volunteers can respond within minutes, and often save lives close to the shore. But sometimes, at the beach, seconds count. This is where RNLI Lifeguards play a vital role, they can respond instantly if dangers develop. A good lifeguard's work is preventative; many lives have already been saved by their vigilance. When you’re heading to a beach, we urge you to visit a Lifeguarded Beach. Make sure you and your family have a safe and fun trip to the coast. If lifeguards are on patrol, then you’ll need to know your flags: RED AND YELLOW FLAG Lifeguarded area. Safest area to swim/bodyboard. BLACK AND WHITE CHEQUERED FLAGS For surfboards, stand-up paddleboards, kayaks and other non-powered craft. Launch and recovery area for kitesurfers and windsurfers. Never swim or bodyboard here. RED FLAG Danger! Never go in the water under any circumstances when the red flag is flying. During offshore or strong wind conditions. Never use inflatables when the windsock is flying. During this hot weather, you are reminded of the dangers of swimming in Rivers, Lakes, Quarries, etc. The water is very cold and jumping in can cause “Cold Water Shock” which is a killer. Chalk Talk It’s arrived! I’m delighted that the new LINAC (linear accelerator) radiotherapy machine is now up and running at Cheltenham General Hospital. This machine, costing over £2 million, works by mapping the precise contours of a tumour to ensure that the dose is focused in exactly the right place. Most of us will have a family member or friend whose life has been affected by cancer. This latest LINAC is probably our most powerful weapon yet in the fight against this cruel disease. In recent years there has been a big focus on expanding access to chemotherapy. But as Professor Nick Slevin, Chair of the Radiotherapy Clinical Reference Group, said: “State of the art radiotherapy equipment will result in improved cure rates and fewer side effects for patients.” I was grateful to clinicians and therapy radiographers who demonstrated the state-of-the-art machine. Their hard work and expertise are the reasons why cancer outcomes in Gloucestershire are above the national average. Waiting time targets for radiotherapy are also being exceeded, with 98.7% of patients receiving treatment within 31 days of first treatment for cancer. Having spoken to senior doctors, I think we can go further. They share an exciting vision for Cheltenham’s excellent oncology department to be developed as a centre of excellence for diagnosis and treatment. That could be so positive for Cheltenham, not least as it would enable our town to continue to attract the brightest and the best doctors. The clinicians I met clearly have the enthusiasm and commitment to see this bold ambition through. - written by Alex Chalk, MP for Cheltenham 14

Cheltenham Lions Club By David Green, Club PRO In May the Club welcomed their friends, The Treorchy Male Choir, for a concert at the Roses Theatre in Tewkesbury. Every ticket got sold and the concert was a great success. As a result, the Club was able to present Focus at Cheltenham Hospital with £2,500 for Prostate Cancer Care. The Club also collected for Focus at Asda and helped at the Cricket Festival, selling raffle tickets. Last month, the Club marshalled at Prestbury Fair and ran a stall to raise Club funds. Members also helped marshall at the Sue Ryder Cycle Ride. The Club's next second-hand book sale at the Regent Arcade will take place in September. If you wish to donate any

LETHAL LEATHERJACKETS By Pippa Greenwood
Daddy-longlegs or crane-flies are starting to hatch out now – you may have seen their dangly-legged dancing as they get into your house, clattering against the windows and the lights? Maybe they are not your favourite creatures – indeed, many shy away from them! But these are the adults and it is their young – known as leatherjackets – that really cause grief in gardens. If your lawn has yellowing patches on it or you’ve noticed it being ripped up in th e last few weeks, chances are leatherjackets are to blame, and it is likely that the problem will get a lot worse. So what happens? Well, leatherjackets feed on the roots of grass (and can also cause problems in flowerbeds and vegetable plots) and this may cause the plants they attack to be weakened and even die back; worst of all, these juicy larvae are an extremely tasty snack if you happen to be an animal such as a crow, rook, magpie, badger or a fox. So as soon as there are leatherjackets in your garden, these animals come along in search of 18
them, ripping up your lawn or excavating beds and borders in the process. Lawns are usually worst affected and can be devastated in a matter of days. What is the best way to check if you have them? Early in the evening, water a couple of the yellowed patches really thoroughly and do the same with a patch that has been ripped up. Next, cover these areas in black polythene weighed down with a couple of bricks or similar. A double layer of black bin liners will do fine or, better still, use an opened-out plastic compost bag as this is particularly thick plastic. Next morning, lift the polythene and you’ll see the pests on the soil or lawn surface. So how do you know leatherjackets are to blame? Leatherjackets are even less goodlooking than their parents: greyish-brown, tubular, legless, up to about 4.5cm long and so nearly transparent that you can often see inside them, lunch and all. You can remove a good number by repeating this black polythene trick –
then, collect up the pests and put them on the bird table where they’ll be a useful source of free and nutritious bird food. If you want a much quicker, easier and more thorough solution then I suggest you use the biological control nematode ‘Nemasys Leatherjacket Killer’. It is quick and easy to apply – I just use a watering can and water it onto the affected area shortly after I’ve seen the first daddylonglegs and when soil conditions are right, so usually late August to late October. As long as you keep the area moist for about three or four weeks, it works a treat – and is even safe if you have a dog, pet rabbit or other pets (or kids!) who use the lawn. So how can you get hold of this? There are two pack sizes available,
suitable for standard lawns or those with a very large area to cover but you won’t find them in garden centres as they have a short shelf life. You can, however, find out more and order them from www. pippagreenwood.com/products in the Protect Your Plants section. We’ll send them out by first class post in an insulated envelope for you to show those pesky leatherjackets who’s the boss! Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood. com and you’ll find some great gardening items: Nemaslug, green controls for leatherjackets, chafer grubs, ants and greenfly, plus garden plant supports, raised bed kits, Easy-Tunnels, gardening tools, Grower Frames, signed books and more! You can even book Pippa for a gardening talk at your local gardening club.

VAUGHAN WILLIAMS IS RETURNING TO DOWN AMNEY Ralph Vaughan Williams, one of England’s greatest composers, is truly coming home at last this summer. Down Ampney, his Gloucestershire birthplace, is to be the glorious setting for a rare music festival to celebrate its most distinguished son in this sixtieth year since his death. Throughout the August bank holiday weekend, the Cotswold village will be filled with music, not just by Vaughan Williams but by a glittering line-up of his contemporaries such as Ravel, Sibelius, Bruch, Howells, Ireland, Bridge and Stanford. A stellar line-up of performers will include Britain’s top concert viola player Philip Dukes, the violinist Jack Liebeck and the tenor James Gilchrist. The festival promises four days of enchantment, not to mention some exquisite food and wine tasting. The actor Anton Lesser will give readings of poetry by Ursula Vaughan Williams. The festival’s president, the awardwinning film and TV composer Debbie Wiseman, will talk about her career. But for some the most magical Vaughan Williams moment will come during Sunday evensong in the village church when they can sing Come down O love divine in the very place, Down Ampney, which gave the hymn tune its name. Town Centre Talking Kevan Blackadder, Cheltenham BID Director
Helping the homeless get off the streets of Cheltenham Cheltenham has a continuing issue with homelessness. Some are people forced on to the street through issues out of their control, others are begging to fund drug and alcohol habits and local charities tell me that as many as 70% have somewhere to live and are not homeless at all.
It can be a lengthy legal process, but the end results have been worthwhile. You can help by reporting incidents of aggressive begging by phone to 101 or email to 101@gloucestershire.police.uk. You can also play your part by not giving money directly to people on the street. The only way to ensure that the money will be spent properly is to donate to one of the charities that support the homeless in Cheltenham. I am supporting one of the best, CCP, by joining an overnight Sleep Out on October 10 to highlight the plight of the genuine homeless. If you’re able to donate in support, please visit the SleepOut page at www.ccp.org.uk.
There seems to be the perception that nothing is being done to tackle the problem, but this could not be further from the truth. Cheltenham BID is working with the council, police and charities to try and tackle the problem. The starting point is always for an outreach worker to work directly with the individuals. If they are prepared to be helped, some amazing results can be achieved. However, there are others who do not want to respond and beg aggressively, causing problems for town centre visitors and businesses alike. Direct action has been possible by imposing civil injunctions on individuals. Page 23
Councillors Corner By Cllr Angie Boyes, Charlton Kings I recently attended some thoughtprovoking and informative local events regarding sustainability and the alarmingly harmful consequences of single use plastics on our environment. The most memorable and striking message was ‘there is no away’. When we throw away our rubbish it all has to go somewhere and most of this plastic is ending up in landfill sites where it will sit for hundreds of years, it is ending up in our oceans or back in to our food chain. So, what is the solution? Thankfully, we all have the power to do something. Obviously, not buying it in the first place is the best solution but this isn’t always practical. To prevent plastics ending up in the ocean you could pick up litter
that you see locally or at the beach. There are lots of websites with handy tips to help you reduce the plastics you use. These include; taking your own shopping bag, carrying a reusable water bottle, bringing your own cup, saying no to disposable cutlery and also just slowing down and dining in. Here in Cheltenham we are doing a great job of increasing the amount we recycle and we should be super proud of that! I have made a pledge to reduce the amount of plastic we use as a family, it would be great if you could all join me because there really is no ‘away’ and we have the power to make a difference together.
Spot the difference There are 10 differences between the two images below. How many can you spot?

Crab Parcels Makes 20
Ready in 40 minutes
These crisp filo pastry parcels with a crab and ginger filling make a tasty seafood starter for a special dinner or can be served as nibbles with refreshing drinks on a hot summer’s evening.
• 1 x 230g can crab meat, drained and flaked • 1 tsp grated fresh root ginger • 2 tbsp freshly chopped coriander • 2 spring onions, finely chopped
Cut the sheets of filo pastry into twenty 15cm squares. Take one square and brush lightly with water then top with a second pastry square. Place a spoonful of the crab mixture in the centre of the square. Brush the edges lightly with water and gather them together to enclose the filling and form a moneybag-shaped parcel.
• 8-10 sheets of filo pastry (see Tip)
Repeat with the rest of the pastry squares and filling to make 10 parcels in total. Half fill a large deep pan with vegetable oil and heat until a small piece of filo pastry dropped in the hot fat sizzles and browns in 20 seconds. Deep fry the parcels, in 2-3 batches, for 2-3 minutes until crisp and golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper.
• Vegetable oil for deep frying
Serve warm with sweet chilli sauce for dipping and garnished with shredded spring onion.
• 1 tbsp lime juice • Freshly-ground black pepper
• 4 tbsp sweet chilli sauce • Shredded spring onion, to garnish 26
Mix the crab meat, ginger, coriander, chopped spring onions and lime juice in a bowl. Season lightly with freshly-ground black pepper.
TIP Filo pastry sheets can vary in size so you may
need a few more if they are small. Keep the squares covered with a clean damp cloth or kitchen paper when filling, to prevent the pastry drying and tearing.
