From the Editor Dear Reader,

Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people

Well, where did this year go? I can’t believe it's December already and it’s that time of year again when we embrace Christmas and all the festive fun that goes with it. Whether you go for a stroll on the Christmas market, take the children to meet Santa or enjoy a seasonal concert, there are plenty of fantastic events happening in and around the area for you to enjoy in the lead-up to Christmas. Make sure to have a look at our 'What's On' section towards the back of the magazine for more information. Christmas time is also pantomime time. This year’s production at The Everyman Theatre is 'Dick Whittington and his Cat' while The Roses Theatre in Tewkesbury is staging 'Sleeping Beauty'. I can't wait to take the kids! December is a particularly busy time for our local shops, pubs, cafés and restaurants, many of which are open throughout the season, so please support our local businesses as much as you can this Christmas and give back to the community. Finally, I would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all of us at Glos Directories! See you next year. Best wishes,

Vicky Muller

Chalk Talk I recently raised the future of Cheltenham’s A&E during Prime Minister’s Question Time. Although NHS managers had been quick to slap down suggestions for any threat following a spate of local rumours, I was determined that they should be left in no doubt about the value that we place on our A&E locally. And when I say ‘locally’, let’s not forget that our A&E is not just used by 115,000 people here in Cheltenham. It is cherished by residents in Bourton, Stow, Moreton-in-Marsh and beyond. That’s why I regularly discuss the hospital with my parliamentary colleagues in the Cotswolds and Tewkesbury. Back in 2013 Cheltenham’s Accident and Emergency hours were reduced. A&E now operates between 8.00am and 8.00pm. One of the first things I did when I was elected in 2015 was to hold urgent meetings with the key NHS Trusts in Gloucestershire. That’s

because I wanted to make plain that Cheltenham needed to keep its current A&E provision and that Trust management should be working towards restoring full services at the earliest opportunity. Back in 2013 local health bosses stated that the reason that A&E hours were reduced was a shortage of specialist middle-grade doctors. Four years on and I want to discover if that’s still the case. I’ve highlighted the issue with the Prime Minister. Now I’ve applied to hold a Parliamentary debate to explore the current recruitment position. The local NHS Sustainability and Transformation Plan, currently under construction, presents an opportunity to introduce a nighttime urgent care centre operating between 8.00pm and 8.00am every day. Let’s be clear: that facility must be

in addition to existing daytime A&E hours. It would give us 24hour cover in the heart of Cheltenham and would be a vital step towards the long-term goal of re-instating full A&E at Cheltenham General Hospital. Of course, it’s the local NHS managers who ultimately make the key decisions. We have to trust our local health professionals to use their clinical judgement. But at the same time, they need to truly listen to the voices of local people. - by Alex Chalk

Stars smash £55k for hospice Walkers have reached for the stars with their fundraising efforts for Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice, raising a staggering £55,500 following on from the Starlight Hike - A Night to Remember which took place at the end of October and was sponsored by Capita. This could pay for 18 hospice nurses for a month, more than enough to pay for one nurse to provide a month of care in each of the inpatient hospice care beds in the county, which are all housed at the hospice. Matt Reay is Events Fundraiser at Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice. He said, “This is the largest amount of money our Starlight Hike event has ever raised. It will make a massive difference to those families we care for and support. As a charity, we rely on fundraising to keep our care services going. Thanks to all those walkers who turned out to be with us on the night and have been so busy fundraising before and since to raise this enormous amount of money. We are blown away by the response to the event.” The annual 10k night-time walk around Cheltenham takes walkers from St Edward's Prep School in Charlton Kings to the hospice grounds where Page 8

they can leave a message for a loved one on a wall of stars. This year Bishop's Cleeve-based Capita were the sponsors. Nikki Moss, Customer Service Manager, from Capita said, "We were delighted to be this year's main sponsor of the Starlight Hike, in aid of Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice. Working with representatives from the hospice in the build-up to this prestigious event was truly inspirational, and an absolute pleasure – the professionalism, passion and commitment on show at all times was a credit to every member of staff and volunteer, and was an excellent fit with our own corporate values.”

“We are proud to have supported such a worthwhile cause that we hold so close to our hearts here at Capita, and very much look forward to working with the hospice again in the future." Next year’s Starlight Hike will take place at St Edward's Prep School, Cheltenham on Saturday 20th October 2018 from 7.00pm. For more information on Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice visit www.sueryder.org/leckhampton.

“Many of my colleagues took part in the hike itself, as the hospice holds special memories for a large number of our people here in the Cheltenham office, so for us as a business it was very important that we were giving something back to Starlight Hike walkers (pictured from the night) have our people, as well as to Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court jumping for joy at the whole community in the amount they've raised for the hospice charity sponsoring the event.”

Home & Interiors Christmas Elegance

By Katherine Sorrell

It’s all too easy to go overboard at Christmas. This year, why not decorate your home with subtle glamour, creating a sophisticated seasonal backdrop to festive times with friends and family. this living room is welcoming and cosy, but also cool, calm and collected, thanks to a subtle colour scheme of greys and whites, together with touches of texture in the form of wicker, wool and wood. traditional nordmann fir, from £29.99; led warm white string lights, from £9.99; wool throw, £59.99; firwood star decoration (set of three), £44.99; Magical Hare cushion, £39.99; tree decorations, from £1.49; all dobbies.

Beautiful baubles will add class to your christmas tree. Walther & co bronze acorn and leaf decoration, £9.99, cotswold trading.

a simple white backdrop with natural, twining leaves is perfect for offsetting the glow of candles. large silver-dipped candle holder, £29.99; led glitter twig wreath, £39.99; medium silverdipped candle holder, £9.99; reindeer bell ornament, £4.99; decorated glass bauble, £3.99; garland (price and details on application); all dobbies.

Instead of a knitted or hessian sack, how about a pretty, printed fabric design? night owl christmas sack, £5.50, sophie allport.

an intriguing and subtle way to display the twinkle of fairy lights. Bo 80 led glassdomed cylinder, £13, B&Q.

a glimmer of metal is all the rage, and these minimal, slightly rusted zinc garlands satisfy the trend without adding any bling. Use along the mantelpiece, twined along the christmas table or hung on the wall. £29.95, decorator’s notebook.

Ideas for elegant festIve décor

• Too many colours together tend to look garish. Choose one main colour theme for each room and stick to it. This season, dark backdrops are very on trend, with accents of gold or brass, while white, beige or grey are classics that always look great, with dashes of red or green for that seasonal feel. • With limited colours, textures come into their own. Think linen, wool, fur (faux if you prefer), wicker and – this year’s must-haves – concrete and velvet. • For this look, avoid twee animals, anything knitted or made from felt, and all-out glitter (a little sparkle goes a long way). • Christmas ornaments tend to be collected over the years, and so can look rather haphazard if all displayed in one go. Carefully choose a selection that co-ordinates and – stay strong – put the rest back in the loft for next year. Page 14

Get Real This Christmas by Pippa Greenwood

Christmas is well and truly just around the corner and whilst your thoughts may be on gifts, meals, crackers and cards, don’t forget the tree. And I mean a REAL Christmas tree, complete with needles and, if you choose the really traditional route, that wonderful aroma. For those concerned about the impact on the planet, Britishgrown trees are most definitely not an ecological disaster zone - think of them as a crop plant rather like a field of cabbages, except that typically Christmas trees will use less fertiliser and fewer chemicals than many classic crop plants. To make sure you get what suits you best, there are a few things to think about before buying your tree. The Norway spruce (Picea abies) is the traditional tree, with gorgeous, short dark green pointed needles and that unmistakable Christmassy aroma, but it is the most likely to drop its needles. However, if well treated it won’t perform badly and it is the lowest-priced of the real trees. The Serbian Spruce (Picea omorica) is quite similar to the Norway spruce and is the favourite festive tree in central Europe, with a distinct blueish tint to the underside of the Page 18

needles. Typically slender, it is a good choice for smaller sitting rooms and has decent needle retention - but no smell. The Nordmann fir (Abies nordmanniana) is now the biggest-selling Christmas tree in the UK. Its shiny green broad needles are quite soft and almost impossible to shift, so it’s ideal for those who hate mess! The Fraser fir (Abies fraseri) is less widely available, but its combination of good looks and needle-holding ability makes it worth considering. It has a narrower base than the Norway spruce so is also useful in smaller houses. So, how do you choose the best tree of the type you’ve decided on and keep it looking good? • Don’t buy a real tree too early. • Opt for a tree produced by a member of the British Christmas Tree Growers Association - look for the BCTGA logo. • Choose a tree with a good, full shape, not lopsided and with minimal gaps. Check the needles - they should be glossy (for those varieties where this is a characteristic) and the correct colour. They must be free from pests and diseases - avoid anything

yellowed or inclined to shed, or with white fluffy bits. Never buy an already netted tree since you can’t see what you’re getting! • If you buy one quite early then the most important thing is to keep it outside - recut the end of the trunk and put the tree in a bucket of water in a sheltered spot outside. Remove any net as it is important to get air circulating around the needles. • When you bring a tree inside, avoid putting it anywhere too warm or close to a heat source, and make sure that you use a stand with a water reservoir that is kept topped up. When Christmas is over, make sure you recycle your tree - many councils and garden centres now offer this service. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for great gardening gifts: a stylish ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ gift card (a perfect Christmas present, where the recipient receives their chosen garden ready vegetable plants in the spring and every week Pippa emails with topical hints, tips and advice), gardening tools, raised bed kits, GrowerFrames, signed books and more!

Town Centre Talking It’s been a long time in the planning – make sure you enjoy a very Cheltenham Christmas What makes for a good Christmas in a town centre? It’s a question that we started asking not at the start of November but at the start of March. And when you’re planning Christmas in somewhere like Cheltenham, it’s crucial to have a long run-in time. At Cheltenham Business Improvement District (BID), we aim to support the town centre’s wide variety of businesses in all sorts of ways. But when Christmas comes around, there is no doubt the focus is on retail and F & B. That’s probably better known to you as shops and restaurants/pubs (Food and Beverage). The aim must be to make Cheltenham town centre as attractive a place as possible to as many different people as possible. Be they families, socialites looking for a night out or coach parties looking for the very best places to go Christmas shopping, the competition is everywhere. Just think about the rivals for the “Christmas pound”. For our businesses, it’s important that Cheltenham is more attractive than other towns and cities within driving distance. It’s just as important that it’s more attractive than mass-appeal regional centres like Cribbs Causeway. And it’s just as important that it’s more attractive than our own out-of-town shopping centres like Gallagher Retail Park and Kingsditch. When I’ve visited the latter two lately, they’ve certainly been busy. And I keep being told that it’s because of the free parking. That’s another reason why Gloucestershire shoppers are prepared to go all the way to Cribbs Causeway apparently (have they ever calculated how much more they spend on the fuel they use to get there?). Page 20

But actually, if you make the place they go to shop or eat and drink as welcoming and interesting as it possibly can be, all the evidence shows that the real impact of parking charges is minimal. That’s why, this Christmas, the BID has put its money where its mouth is and invested in new Christmas lights, with our financial support being in addition to the amount spent by Cheltenham Borough Council. The old lights have gone to be replaced by new lights that we intend to help improve yearon-year as the town centre redevelopment comes to an end. One new addition this year is a 3D feature at Boots Corner, which has stood bare in previous years. The first step is new-look events as the lights are turned on during the afternoon and evening of November 25. We think the youngsters will love both Santa’s horse-drawn carriage and a walking nativity featuring a petting donkey in Montpellier. The Christmas Market returns to the Promenade for more than three weeks and there are some wonderful Christmas productions being staged at The Everyman,

The Town Hall and The Playhouse. The BID has also launched the Cheltenham Gift Card, which is the only gift card that can be spent across the town at more than 70 businesses, including shops, restaurants, bars, cafes and clubs. It’s probably the only way you can be sure to give a gift this Christmas and know that the recipient will get exactly what they want. It also means the money stays in Cheltenham. Buy the card from the Ultimate Party Shop in Regent Street, Wild Beer in Cambray Place or online at www.cheltenhamgiftcard.co.uk. We think you’ll like the mix in Cheltenham this Christmas. Why go anywhere else? For more things to do and places to eat and shop this Christmas, please go to www.visitcheltenham/cheltenham. - by Kevan Blackadder, Cheltenham BID Director

COUNCILLORS CORNER Writing copy for the Christmas edition on Remembrance Sunday can be a perilous task, but tomorrow is deadline day... Before we focus on the festive season, we must look back to remember the millions of people who lost their lives, and remind ourselves what they fought for. We owe it to them to build a better future for this and for future generations. Closer to home we must decide, for example, what sort of place we want Cheltenham to be. By the time you are reading this, two consultations will have been completed, both indicative of ways Cheltenham will have to adapt to our changing world. The first is about more sustainable planting. Contrary to rumour, there is no proposal to concrete over Imperial Gardens or the Long Gardens, but there is increasing recognition that there are merits in reducing the amount of watering that is needed,

and in planting more sustainably – without detracting from the floral displays that Cheltenham is famous for. More sustainable planting is essential if Cheltenham is ever to enter Britain in Bloom again. The second is ’20 is plenty’, a proposal to reduce the speed limit on most residential roads to just 20mph. Not only is this a road safety issue, but it would significantly reduce pollution. Sadly, Cheltenham is named and shamed as one of the towns with the worst air quality in the country. For the sake of our residents, we must do better. This December should also see the completion of the Joint Core Strategy inspection. By 11th December, Gloucester, Tewkesbury and Cheltenham councils should all have voted to sign off the strategy and implementation can begin.

Cheltenham Calendar Ding Dong Merrily on High! The festive season is finally here and the bells are certainly ringing. I am reporting for duty and am ready to bring you a whole host of cosy events and seasonal shindigs. Kick off your final month of the year with a Pizza and Prosecco Festival at Glenfall House in Charlton Kings on the 2nd of December. With delicious homemade pizzas and over 20 types of prosecco to choose from, this event is not to be sniffed at. On the same day, Cheltenham Town Hall is hosting 'The Joy of Christmas 2017'. Presented by BBC presenter Vernon Harwood, this concert featuring carols, seasonal songs and festive cheer is bound to get you into the spirit of Christmas. Work off the pizza and prosecco by taking part in a Father Christmas fun run on the first Sunday of the month. Join Santas from all over the Cotswolds to run, walk or crawl 3K around Pittville Park in a red padded suit to raise money for charity. The following weekend on the 9th, you can step through the wardrobe and find yourself surrounded by

lions, witches and fawns. Cheltenham Town Hall is hosting a Narnia-themed afternoon tea and you have been invited by the Ice Queen herself. Listen to snow crackling underfoot as Mr Tumnus shows you to your table where you can feast on an afternoon tea while watching a ballet performance by the Ice Queen. The tickets are £19.50 which is a real bargain for such an immersive experience, a dance performance and an afternoon tea. There are plenty of opportunities to catch Santa this month, despite it being his busiest month. Tuck into a cup of tea and full English at the Harvester in the Brewery on the weekends of the 16th and 23rd, whilst being visited by the big man himself. Or take a cruise through Gloucester Docks as he ho ho ho’s his way through the Quays from the 16th. St Nick can also be found on the GWR railway as he chugs his way between Winchcombe and Cheltenham Racecourse throughout December.

I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! By next Christmas, the new John Lewis store will be open, which will make a big impact on the town centre. - Cllr Paul McCloskey Charlton Kings Borough Councillor

by Olivia Scull There is also another chance to get wrapped up in the faux fur coats and have a hot toddy as the thrill of the races warms you up. The 15th and 16th bring two days of exhilarating international races to Cheltenham. There are many Christmas and New Year parties, events and celebrations scattered throughout December, too many to mention in this short column! For more information on specific smaller events, head online. And don’t forget the festive events that have started last month and are carrying on in December, such as the Christmas Market on the Promenade and the Dick Whittington pantomime at Cheltenham's Everyman Theatre. The combination of those two is bound to covert any cynical scrooge!

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Lions Club of Cheltenham December Update

Club President David Storey, Mayor Klara Sudbury and Club Vice President Tom Pettigrew launching the Wenceslas Appeal On 23rd October the Mayor of Cheltenham launched the Wenceslas Heating Appeal on behalf of the Lions Club. If anyone feels that they can manage without all or part of their Winter Fuel Allowance, Cheltenham Lions provide a direct bridge to those in Cheltenham with insufficient money to pay their fuel bills. Money raised will be passed to CCP (Caring for Communities and People) who will distribute it to Cheltenham residents in need. Nothing will be taken for administration by Cheltenham Lions

or CCP. CCP is adept at helping people who have a serious and immediate need. It is calculated that around 6,925 households in Cheltenham need to spend 10% or more of their income to achieve adequate warmth. Donations can be sent by cheque made payable to “Cheltenham Lions Club Charitable Trust Fund” and endorsed “Wenceslas Heating” on the back to the ‘Treasurer, Lions Club of Cheltenham, 39 Rivelands Road, Cheltenham, GL51 9RF". Alternatively, you can pay via mydonate (BT online free-to-use service). The Club has had a Holiday Caravan at Burnham on Sea for the past 34 years. It provides local disabled people, who would not otherwise have a holiday, with a break. This summer 94 people (including 40 children) have used the caravan. They have been recommended by Acorns Children’s Hospice, the James Hopkins Trust and Gloucestershire Carers. The Club is looking forward to the next season. Last month, members helped marshall the Sue Ryder Starlight Hike. Over 500 walkers took part and raised money for the local hospice. It was lovely seeing people from all walks of life come together and remember loved ones while supporting such a wonderful cause.

The Club was happy to once again be involved in this fantastic event. The Club is currently preparing for the next book sale in the Regent Arcade which will be held in February. If you have any good quality novels or children’s books you wish to donate, Club members will collect books from within the Cheltenham area. Contact Ron White on 01242 675286 or David Green on 01242 862225. The Lions Club of Cheltenham would like to wish all its friends and all Cheltenham Magazine readers a very happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year and remind everyone that the 'Cards for Good Causes' pop-up shops at 32 Cambray Place (until 16th Dec) and The Wilson (until 18th Dec) are now open. The shops support many good causes, some of which are local, so make sure to pop in for some Christmas cards and more. The Cheltenham Lions Club meets at the Victory Club on the second and fourth Monday of every month. For more information, contact Peter Weir on 07973 807159 or Club President David Storey on 01242 235606. - by David Green, Club PRO

Cloakroom refitting with building works to accommodate a shower. “An excellent job that started and finished on time. Moreover Matt had allowed sufficient margin for including significant additional work we requested. A good team who adapted to circumstances and tried to minimise the inevitable dust and mess. Highly recommended.”
