Old Year, New Us You will have seen The Cheltenham Magazine published by Glos Directories for the last few years either landing on your doormat each month or when you’ve picked up a copy at the various places we arrange for drop-off.

Well, ‘The Cheltenham Cleeve Magazine’ still exists – you are looking at it! – but we’ve ended 2018 with a name change and a fresh new look. As the logo on the front says, we are now Love Local Magazines, and this is the Cheltenham edition of our six areas. Although we will be changing the website and email addresses too (these things are so much work) all the old contact methods work, and the phone numbers stay the same. And of course, we still have our lovely advertisers old and new, the local news and popular articles and puzzles

CONTACT US If you are a resident, a distributor or want to contact us about what's included in the magazine call Anne on 01242 388 366 or email Anne@lovelocalmagazines.co.uk If you are an advertiser with us now, or would like details about advertising, call Lorraine on 01242 388 368 or email Lorraine@lovelocalmagazines.co.uk

are included as ever.

This has all been a fun distraction from what I should have been doing – Christmas shopping. I have the added challenge of it being my son’s birthday on Christmas Day, so I have this creeping feeling of panic washing over me. Everything does always get there, I just really don’t know how. As this is the last edition of the year, the Love Local Magazines office would like to wish all our advertisers, readers and loyal distributors a very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.

Christmas Carol

Chris and Sophie had become engaged after what Chris’s parents, Kevin and Jenny, considered a bit of a whirlwind romance, so inviting Sophie’s mum over for Christmas dinner had seemed like a good way for the two families to get to know each other. Carol had arrived earlier than expected, accompanied by a vibrant purple perm, flashing reindeer antlers and a crate of stout. “I’ll just park myself here.” She wedged herself at the kitchen table. “Pass me a bottle will you?” “I’m surprised our Chris didn’t offer you a lift,” Jenny said, taking a glass off the shelf. “It’s not how we brought him up, is it Kevin?”

Carol knocked the cap off her stout on the edge of the table. “Men! My third husband 6

treated his python better then he treated me.” “Have you been married three times, Carol?” Jenny stirred the bread sauce nervously. This was news. “I wish I’d stopped at three.” Carol shook her head. “Mind you,” she added with a belch, “I’m currently young, free and single.” She fluttered her eyelashes menacingly at Kevin, who affected a sudden fascination with the contents of the cutlery drawer.

“Let’s hope divorce doesn’t run in the family,” Jenny laughed nervously, “for all our sakes.” “Nah, my daughter’s got her head screwed on right.” Carol waved her almost empty glass. “Of course, she was engaged to that chap from the fish market. Nice lad.” She took a final slurp. “Hold your horses I said to her, do you really want your curtains

smelling of crab sticks?”

“When was this?” Jenny asked casually, turning down the gas under the pan of sprouts. “It was after she’d called off the wedding to that other chap, who worked on the bins.” She adjusted her drooping antlers. “I wasn’t keen on him. He had really long arms.” “Is that right?” Jenny nudged Kevin.

“And then there was that fella from Hartlepool.” Carol reached for another bottle. “I’d say, on average, she gets engaged every six months. I’ve stopped bothering the hat shop now.”

“Who’s Rose?” Kevin asked, relieving Chris of his load. “Sophie’s mum,” Chris said, taking off his coat.

“Then who’s Carol?” Jenny asked.

“Carol? That’s what the missing aunt’s called.” Chris sounded surprised. “Apparently she’s a bit of a handful.” By Jackie Brewster

Jenny looked at Kevin in alarm.

“I wonder what’s holding the lovebirds up?” Jenny folded up a tea-towel decisively. “Kevin, could give me a hand with something in the hall?” “Certainly love.” Kevin followed her, relieved to be out of the kitchen.

“Well that’s Christmas ruined,” Jenny whispered to him at the foot of the stairs. “Why’s that?” Kevin said.

“Haven’t you been listening?” She wrung her hands on her apron. “Sophie’s going to break our poor boy’s heart.” “Here they are now,” he said, as the front door opened.

“Sorry, we’re late.” Chris, his arms laden with gifts, leaned over to kiss Jenny’s cheek. “Merry Christmas.” “What held you up?” Jenny said. “And where’s Sophie?”

“We got talking to the Chadburns over the road.” He pushed the door shut with his foot. “Their nutty aunt hasn’t turned up and they’re panicking. Sophie and Rose are helping them call the police.”

Chalk Talk Silicon Spa is coming! The Government has recently agreed to financially commit to Cheltenham’s future as an 'internationally recognised centre of cyber security excellence'.

Cyber is worth £20 billion a year to the British economy and has the potential to generate incredible, life-changing, opportunities for young people.

Cheltenham has already made remarkable progress. In 2015 we secured a backing for a Cyber Innovation Centre. The second cohort of businesses passing through the town’s cyber accelerator has been another huge success. It's estimated that the start-ups nurtured by GCHQ now have a combined value of over £75 million! And now a third cohort has been launched. So what's next? The answer is a dedicated, avowed, building near to GCHQ to nurture and support a local cybersecurity ecosystem.

We've won £22 million of Government funding for the infrastructure improvements needed to open up a suitable site, and another £1 million has been secured to fund the business case and outline design of the new building.

Now we need the developers to apply for planning permission and I am continuing to work with our local Councils to make this happen as soon as possible. - written by Alex Chalk, MP for Cheltenham 8

Christmas Mincemeat Slice

This delicious festive slice can be served warm as a pud with custard, thick cream or brandy butter or simply cool completely and serve instead of mince pies.

Ready in 1 h 15 mins, plus chilling & cooling | Makes 12-14 slices INGREDIENTS 225g plain flour

165g unsalted butter, chilled and diced 1 egg yolk blended with 1 tbsp cold water 75g caster sugar

300g good quality mincemeat 50g ground almonds

2 tbsp flaked almonds

TIP

Add some finely chopped toasted hazelnuts or walnuts to the crumble topping for an extra nutty flavour.

10

Sift the flour into a large bowl and rub in the butter with your fingertips until the mixture resembles very fine breadcrumbs (alternatively pulse in a food processor until fine breadcrumbs).

Remove 100g of the breadcrumb mixture and cover and chill in the fridge. Stir 25g of the sugar into the remaining mixture, then stir in the egg and water and mix to a firm dough (adding a little more water if needed). Knead lightly then wrap in cling film and chill for 30 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas mark 6. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface and use to line a 23cm square tart tin. Prick the pastry all over with a fork. Line the pastry case with baking paper and baking beans and bake for 10 minutes. Remove the lining paper and beans and bake for a further 5-7 minutes until the pastry is crisp and pale golden. Cool slightly. Reduce the oven temperature to 180C/160C fan/gas mark 4. Spread the mincemeat in the pastry case. Mix the rest of the sugar and the ground almonds into the reserved pastry crumb mixture and scatter over the mincemeat to cover completely.

Return the tin to the oven and bake for a further 25-30 minutes or until the crumble topping is pale golden. Scatter over the flaked almonds and leave to cool before removing from the tin and cutting into 12-14 thin slices.

THE OXFORD BEATLES Live at Parabola Arts Centre

15 DEC, 8PM The Oxford Beatles are a cover band that perform the music of The Beatles, with not a wig, nor funny accent in sight!

In 2017 the band commemorated the 50th anniversary of the release of The Beatles’ Sgt Pepper album with a fivenight run of live performances of the album in Oxford’s Simpkins Lee Theatre. The sold-out show saw the band accompanied by a 12-piece orchestra, Indian classical musicians plus their newest member, the Fifth Beatle, Greg Hooper on keyboard. Previous Oxford Beatles gigs have been dominated by The Beatles’ early material. Songs from the Studio Years sees the band focusing on the more complex Beatles songs that marked their transition from a live touring act to a studio band.

The show will include songs from Revolver, spanning all the way to Let It Be, a four-year period of recording that includes classics such as Something, Here Comes The Sun and Revolution.

Performing as a five-piece, audiences can expect to hear some of the more complex songs from this period, with the band reproducing the iconic Billy Preston keys parts of the late Beatles material for the first time (Get Back, Don’t Let Me Down). www.everymantheatre.org.uk

A visit to

Last month, Love Local Magazines were invited to review Tewkesbury Park Hotel's new 'Mint' restaurant. During the last four years, the hotel underwent a ÂŁ10 million renovation and this trendy new restaurant, which seats up to 100 diners, brings the renovation to a successful end.

The name 'Mint' reflects the restaurant's fresh cuisine and ties in with its stylish interior. Green walls and fresh potted herbs on all tables are only a few of many nods to the new name. The restaurant has stunningly beautiful panoramic views and you certainly feel as if the outdoors has been brought inside. We received a warm welcome with Gin cocktails and were offered a selection of exquisitely presented food samples. We tried the Forest of Dean fallow deer venison, which was cooked to perfection; Gloucester Old Spot pork belly with a mango, honey & ginger glaze; Bibury Trout & Coln Valley smoked salmon mousse with mouli & lime mayo; and Indian mint & aloo tikki chat. After trying these simply delicious savoury bites, we moved on to the pudding plates. Well, what can I say, we were in heaven! Head Chef Anuj Thakur certainly knows how to do puddings. The Blood orange & white chocolate cheesecake was everything a cheesecake should be, the Dark chocolate tart was divine, and the Mint & matcha green tea parfait with mojito sorbet was not only totally unique but also another hommage to the restaurant's name. 'Mint' takes full advantage of the finest seasonal ingredients available from local producers so whether you are after a quick bite to eat or a corporate meal, the restaurant provides an informal and relaxed dining experience. Very much the unknown underdogs of the tournament, Cheltenham showed they were serious contenders by early on beating Watford 5-3 and Otter Futura 9-0. Their only defeat was to City of Sheffield, the eventual winners, which meant they came second in their group table.

The highlight of the whole tournament was the semi-final victory over London Otter. The team really pulled together and showed true grit and determination against this powerhouse of a team. A shock 5-3 win to Cheltenham meant they faced Sheffield again in the final. The very tired girls put up a good fight but in the end lost 14-3. However, this secured their silver medals, the only medals a Girls NAGS team has ever won at Cheltenham Water Polo Club and the only medal a Cheltenham junior team has won in many years on a national level. 20

CHELTENHAM LIONS CLUB DECEMBER UPDATE The Club has launched its ‘Wenceslas Heating Appeal’ which enables people to donate either all or part of their winter fuel allowance to people in need within the Cheltenham area. Donations can be sent by cheque made payable to ‘Cheltenham Lions’ and endorsed ‘Wenceslas Heating’ on the back to; The Treasurer, Lions Club of Cheltenham, 21 Cudnall St, Cheltenham, GL53 8HS. Nothing is taken for administration. It has been a busy couple of months for the Club. In October members helped with the Sue Ryder ‘Starlight Hike’ by acting as marshalls.

At the beginning of November, several members travelled to Burnham-on-Sea to help the local Lions Club with the Carnival collection. This is in return for the Burnhamon-Sea Club's help with the Holiday Caravan. On Saturday 10th November, several members took part in the Memorial Walk, each carrying the name of a local soldier killed in the First World War. Members found this a very moving experience. On Sunday 21st October, a Luncheon was held at the Hilton Double Tree to celebrate the 58th anniversary of the Club's formation.

In recent months, several donations have been made to local people and organisations and a further £500 have been sent to the national Lions appeal for help in Indonesia. It will be used to provide water-purifying tablets and high-energy biscuits. We thank everyone for their support in the past year and wish you all a Happy Christmas and a healthy New Year. 22

TRANSPORT - More than getting from A to B If you’re anything like I was, you switch off when you hear the word 'transport'. You think about cars and trains, roads and railways. It’s all about machines and getting from A to B. That’s how I used to think before I started working for the Cheltenham-based community transport charity Community Connexions.

It’s easy to take transport for granted, especially if it’s all around you, but imagine if you couldn’t access it. How would you visit loved ones, attend vital health appointments, or go shopping for food? This is the reality for many local individuals and groups that are helped by community transport every day. Gloucestershire’s population is ageing fast and with it, the number of people without access to transport. Recent research by AgeUK predicts there will be more than 2 million people over the age of 50 who will be feeling lonely by 2025/26. A key part of that loneliness will stem from the inability to access transport. Funding to local authorities, the NHS, and to us continues to decline but projections suggest that we will have an additional 2,000 service users

and requests for 45,000 more journeys a year by 2020.

Community transport has a positive impact on people by reducing social and rural isolation. It combats loneliness by bringing people together and getting them where they need to go. It helps people to keep their independence and improves their quality of life. Community transport is about more than just connecting places, it’s about connecting people. Now when I hear transport, I think of people! As a charity, we rely on volunteers. If you could help, please call us on 0345 680 5029 or visit www. communityconnexions.org.uk.

Cheltenham Remembers

Bradbury was in exactly the right place to catch this beautiful rainbow that appeared. In the evening, the Son et Lumière projected onto the front of the Municipal Offices was a true spectacle. Thanks to all the sponsors who made this possible. By Cllr Paul McCloskey, Charlton Kings

Cheltenham really pulled out all the stops with its ‘Cheltenham Remembers WW1’ events. You will have seen lots of photos of everyone on the March of Remembrance, looking bedraggled, yet indomitable, as they steadfastly made their way to the bandstand in Montpelier Gardens for a short ceremony. But as you can see in the photos, it didn’t rain all the time that weekend. Many people entered fully into the spirit by dressing up in period costumes or by marching with details of a family member who was killed in the war. The stories of the 1,290 people from Cheltenham that died, were really moving, and I became quite attached to my soldier, Reginald Mustoe. The weekend began with the March of Remembrance on Saturday afternoon and on Sunday morning, I attended the service at the Charlton Kings war memorial. Kareta
