From the Editor
Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people
Dear Reader, Christmas and January sales have come and gone and the mild start to January was lovely, albeit a little wet at times. As we head into February, we have Valentine's Day to look forward to. Many see Valentine's Day as a commercial gimmick and the first stumbling block for anyone who had a diet-related New Year’s resolution! Whether you celebrate this day or not, I think it is a great way to remind ourselves to spread a bit of love to those around you. Also the 14th falls within half term so it provides parents or grandparents with a great theme for doing some arts and crafts or baking with the children! At the start of the year, committees and fete organisers get together to put dates in the diary for future events. Please remember to let us know what you are planning and we might be able to publish your event in the magazine and share it on our social media pages for you. Happy Valentine’s Day to all our readers and thank you for supporting the local businesses within our magazines! Best wishes, Vicky Muller

Going to a new nail technician can be a daunting prospect. Will they file them to the shape you like, cut them too short, etc.? However, after having my nails done by Lucy, I was thrilled! Lucy was very thorough cleaning my nails first, then tending to my cuticles, before the polish was applied.

Parenting Time and Sanity Savers by Kate Duggan
Tips and tricks to make your life easier, from washable nail polish to a booster seat that can fit in a school bag. Monday morning panics 8-8.30am is often a rather stressful period in my house. Arguments over brushing teeth (my son) compete with tears over forgotten homework (my daughter). One thing I do have sorted is making it easy for them to find their uniform so they can get dressed. I use a rubber band to attach two clothes hangers together, one of which is the type with clips. Pants get hung from one clip, tights or socks from the other, and the rest of the uniform goes on the other hanger. Simple. My next mission is to teach them to put their PJs under their pillow, rather than dumping them on the floor. We’ve been working on that one for a while now, with no luck. Hair brushing is a source of tantrums the world over. The Wet Brush may save a fair few tears (theirs and yours). It’s the best detangling brush I’ve found yet and can be used on wet or dry hair. £11.99 from www. lookfantastic.com. Kids love nail polish. Schools don’t love it quite so much. If (like me) you’re hopeless at
remembering to remove your child’s nail varnish on a Sunday evening, you might want to try Nailmatic Kids Nail Polish. Not only is it toxin-free and available in several childfriendly shades, but it can be washed off with warm soapy water. Powder-pink glitter is a favourite in my house, although my son prefers Rio Green. £6.95, www.cuckooland.com. Days out From emergency wees in the park to dropped dummies, children just attract germs. Hand sanitising gels are handy but not always that child-friendly. Aquaint, on the other hand, is 100% natural and formulated without strong chemicals, preservatives or alcohol. It kills 99.9% of bacteria, but is completely safe, so can be used on everything from hands to drinks bottles. £2.49 - £4.99 from Boots, Mothercare and other retailers. Children seem to have an innate ability to lose things. If you can’t be bothered to spend hours sewing on name tags, try Tinyme labels. They’re printed with your child’s name and a design of your choice.
The Essentials Pack (from £24) comes with more than 200 labels, including iron-on labels for clothes, and different sized stickers for shoes, pencil cases and so on. They’re designed to stay on through washing, tumble drying and general dayto-day use. Tinyme also make personalised bags, books, drinks bottles and a ton of other items, handy if your child is particularly prone to misplacing their possessions. Play dates After-school playdates are great at keeping the kids out of your hair, but it’s all too easy to forget to swap car seats with the other parents. The new Mifold (main picture) can help to make sure you’re never again caught out with three kids and only two booster seats. Unlike traditional booster seats, Mifold adjusts the seatbelt to fit the child, rather than raising the child up to fit the belt. That means it’s far smaller than a car seat; small enough to keep in a glove box or even your child’s school bag. It can be adjusted to fit children aged from around four to 12, and it meets the highest legal standards for child restraint systems. £49.95 from John Lewis.

She has now sadly passed away but I aim to grow the business as big as my love for her. I started off selling vintage dresses and home décor items and in 2016 expanded into venue décor and personalised gifts. Caramelised
Onion & Goats’ Cheese Pizza Serves 4
Ready in 1 hour
This is a tasty alternative to the classic cheese and tomato pizza. Serve with a simple mixed green salad dressed with balsamic vinegar and olive oil.
Ingredients: • 3 tbsp olive oil, plus extra to drizzle • 2 large onions, peeled and thinly sliced • 2 tsp brown sugar • 2 x 145g packets pizza base mix • 2 tsp fresh chopped rosemary leaves, plus 1 tbsp small sprigs • 2 x 100g round goats’ cheeses, sliced • 5 cherry tomatoes, halved
TIP
Instead of the caramelised onions spread, the pizza base with sun-dried tomato paste then top with some cooked and drained spinach. Scatter over diced mozzarella cheese, grated parmesan cheese and some fresh chopped oregano. Page 14
Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan and add the onions. Fry over a gentle heat for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened. Add the sugar and fry for a further 10 minutes until golden brown. Leave to cool. Preheat the oven to 220C, Fan 200C, Gas Mark 7. Empty both sachets of the pizza base mix into a large bowl and stir in a large pinch of salt and the chopped rosemary leaves. Stir in 200ml hand-hot water and mix to a soft dough. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5 minutes until smooth and elastic. Roll the dough out to a 30 x 45cm oblong. Place on a greased baking sheet and turn up the edges of the base. Spread the caramelised onions over the base, then top with the sliced goats’ cheese, cherry tomatoes and rosemary sprigs. Leave in a warm place for 10 minutes. Drizzle with olive oil and season with a little salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper. Bake for 15-20 minutes until the base is golden brown.

Cotswold bone The shop for dogs and dog lovers
Hello again furries and humans, So, following my article in the Bishop’s Cleeve Magazine before Christmas, the lovely humans have asked me to write another for this magazine! (Mum is so proud of me!)
• Homemade, healthy and natural treats • Handmade collars, leads and accessories • Raw diet stockist • Official Kennel Club merchandise • Gifts for dog lovers Follow us on
This time I'm here to tell you humans how to make us furries feel loved on Valentine's Day! 1. Let us sleep with you - pleeeeeaaaaase! I don't know why you humans don't let us share the big bed (although I hear from some of my friends at daycare that they're allowed. I need to take this up with my mum). When we sleep we are vulnerable, so having you there makes us feel safe and that you're part of our pack! 2. Scratch behind our ears and rub our bellies. We have sensitive nerves behind our ears so helping us scratch them makes us feel all giddy. Apparently it's something to do with endorphins whatever they are. As for the belly rubs – we just like them! And if we're rolling over, it means we trust you to do a good job. 3. Talk to us. We may not always understand what you’re saying but we like the sound of your voice, providing you're not angry. We like to learn your commands and tone because we just want to please you. We like to look into your eyes too where we can see all your love for us. 4. Take us out. We love walks, especially when we don't have to wear a lead and we can run around like crazy; but we also like days out to tourist attractions and cafes, pubs and restaurants (especially the ones with lots of crumbs on the floor) with you humans too. As long as we're with you, we're happy. 5. Brush/groom us. Now I'm a smooth-haired miniature dachshund, so to be honest this doesn't really do it for me, but a lot of my furrier furry friends tell me they love having a good brush and some even like baths (I don't get it). If you can give us a little massage with it then ok, I'll take it. 6. Treats – obviously! I don't think I need to add anymore on this except we don't like your human chocolate! It makes us poorly and will ruin Valentine's for us worse than a bad oyster on a human date.

Shop online or in-store www.cotswoldbone.com As well as these top tips, if you really want to spoil us a good meal and a new toy would make it the best Valentine's Day, or any day for that fact, ever! Before I go, I just wanted to give a little shout out to the shelter dogs. Not all furries are as lucky as us. Some of our brothers from other mothers, and sisters from other misters, are in the Cheltenham Animal Shelter. Mum took me there once and I wasn't allowed out of the car because I'm lucky enough to have a furever home. I could hear the other dogs talking and they all just want humans to love and to love them back. The shelter humans really do look after them but they want proper homes. So, if you have any room in your house and heart for a furry companion, and you want to make this Valentine's Day really special, please consider adopting a shelter dog; they'll love you on Valentine's Day and every other day for the rest of their lives! Best dash, mum just sat down so I need to get on her lap! Wishing you furries lots of kisses, treats, cuddles, toys and walks and love this Valentine’s Day! And humans, don't forget, our love for you is unconditional!

now, he's locked in the price for a year. So, the sooner you act, the more you're likely to save. 3. Check multi-car policies if you've more than one car in the home. A few insurers offer special discounts if you have more than one car in the home – but comparison sites can’t include these deals, so do it manually. www.Admiral.com Multicar gives discounts of up to 25%, depending on how many cars you insure. You can also get discounts by linking the household standalone policies with Churchill, Direct Line and Privilege. The savings here could be huge. Equally, they can be a rip off; it’s about trial and error. 4. Comprehensive cover may be cheaper than third party. Bizarrely, merely selecting comprehensive means some insurers see you as a lower risk, and it lowers the price, so always check comprehensive too if you want the cheapest. 5. Adding an extra driver could cost less. Again, counter-intuitively adding another person to the policy can bring down your premium, as the average risk is reduced. It’s especially strong if you're a young driver adding a responsible older driver, but can work for others too as Bouncybubbles told me: "Quoted £900 from £500 previous year. By comparing
then adding my husband I got it down to £298."
or late at night, it can work well too.
6. Legitimately tweak your job title. You can't claim to be the Chancellor if you're a pole dancer (or viceversa), but many people have wide ranging roles. So by tweaking your job description you might find your quote is lower. Like @RPJ_Webster93 who tweeted: "@martinslewis Thanks to your 'reword job title' tip my car insurance quote reduced by £500." He legitimately changed his job title from 'council worker' to 'civil servant - cleric'.
9. Got special circumstances and struggling? Speak to a broker. If your circumstances aren’t normal, getting insurance can be tough. Often getting an insurance broker to find a bespoke policy for you can beat comparison sites. See www.biba.org.uk/findinsurance/ 10. Can you get cashback. Once you’ve found your cheapest policy check cashback websites like Quidco.com and TopCashback.co.uk to see if you can get any money back on the policy you’ve chosen if you buy it via them - this can be over £50, so is often worth it. Yet don’t let the cashback tail wag the dog. Choose the right policy first, then see cashback as an added extra (as it isn’t 100% guaranteed). Martin Lewis is the Founder & Editor in Chief of Money Saving Expert. To join the 10 million people who get his Martin’s Money Tips weekly email, go to www. moneysavingexpert.com/ latesttip
7. Don’t ‘pay monthly’ – it doesn't exist. Insurers may call it paying monthly, but actually they loan you the year's cost and while a few are interest free, most charge often hideous interest. The worst offender I’ve seen charges up-to-93% APR interest. So, check and if it’s costly, pay upfront if you can. If not, try to get one of the many year-long-plus 0% credit cards. Just ensure you pay it off over the year, then there's no cost. 8. Consider installing a 'black box'. This device is the tech (officially called 'telematics') insurers put inside your car to monitor how you drive and when. It's especially useful for younger drivers facing hefty costs via other means, though if your mileage is limited and you don't drive at peak times

Gadgets They’ll Love Technology treats for the one you love this Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day has been with us for a long time: it was first associated with courtly love in the 14th century, and by the 18th century it had become very like the Valentine’s Day we celebrate today - lovers would share flowers, cards and confectionery to demonstrate their affection for each other. Today we still do much the same, although the cards are rarely handwritten and the flowers might be ordered online and delivered by a man in a van, but today’s lovers have another kind of gift to gladly give: gadgets! First things first: don’t make the mistake of buying a ‘pinkified’ version of a supposedly male thing, such as a pink power drill, for the person you love. Drills aren’t romantic no matter what colour they happen to be, or how keen on DIY your partner is. And if you’re thinking of buying your partner a wearable device such as a Fitbit fitness tracker, you need to be 100% sure the message you’re sending isn’t going to be interpreted as “you’re lazy!” or even worse, “you’re too fat!” The best Valentine’s Day gifts are things you can share, such as the excellent Polaroid ZIP mobile printer. At £99 it isn’t cheap, but what it delivers is priceless: old-school Polaroids Page 18
from your cutting-edge camera phone. There’s something magical about the prints that today’s selfies don’t quite deliver, and it’s a fun way to record your Valentine’s Day celebrations. If your partner is the techy type already, there’s a good chance that he or she already has the technology they want - and that’s an opportunity for you, because there are all kinds of accessories for their most commonly used items, including gorgeous leather cases for phones and tablets, luxury bands for smartwatches and all kinds of cases and protectors. Just watch out if you’re buying leather, as many cheaper accessories use ‘bonded leather’, which is more like vinyl. Real leather looks, smells and ages better than manmade bonded leather does. There are plenty of electronic accessories too. If your loved one is a music fan, the headphones that came with his or her phone probably aren’t up to much - so even a relatively inexpensive pair of headphones can deliver a massive upgrade to the sound quality. Just watch out if your partner has an iPhone 7, as that doesn’t have a headphone socket; it does come with an adapter but the best option is to
buy headphones that connect to its Lightning socket instead of a traditional headphone socket. That way if the adapter gets lost, which it will, the music doesn’t have to stop. Another good option for music fans is a Bluetooth speaker, which can take music from any source - iPad, laptop or phone - and play it back for hours between recharges. There’s a dizzying range to choose from, including the superb Denon Envaya Mini (£99), which sounds better than speakers twice the price, and the Sumvision Psyc Monic (£38), which delivers incredible bass response. And if your partner’s something of a water baby, the £9.99 SoundBot HD speaker is designed to work in the shower. It even has hands-free calling via your phone, which strikes us as a really terrible idea, but with a range of 33 feet it means enjoying music without having to worry about expensive electronic devices getting soaked. Who knows, you might even get away with buying the pink one.

Leckhampton WI celebrates 70th anniversary by raising funds for defibrillators February 2017 marks the 70th anniversary of the Leckhampton WI. The institute has a longstanding tradition of helping the local community and inspired by a ‘Save A Life’ talk by St. John Ambulance, Leckhampton WI members decided to raise money for the installation of a community defibrillator (to be sited at Leckhampton Village Hall) as part of the birthday celebrations.
Leckhampton WI felt that the defibrillator is a vital resource for the community as it could save a life while the emergency services When a person suffers a cardiac are on their arrest easy-to-use lifesaving way. The use of the defibrillator requires no training as once you open included a wide range of activities such as a sponsored wing walk, and the lid it will instruct you on how to deliver patient care. Cake and Bake Raspberry & Vanilla Panna Cotta These delightful creamy desserts make the perfect Valentine treat!
Ingredients:
1.
To make the raspberry jelly hearts, line a small 6cm square dish with cling film. Soak the gelatine in a shallow dish of cold water for 2-3 minutes. Heat the raspberry puree in a small pan with 1 tbsp water. Remove the gelatine leaf from the water and stir into the hot puree until dissolved. Pour into the lined dish and leave to cool, then chill in the fridge until set.
2.
When the jelly is set, use a small heart-shaped cookie cutter to stamp out 4 heart shapes and place each one in the base of a small heart shaped ramekin dish (each about 150ml capacity).
3.
To make the panna cotta, place the cream, vanilla extract, lemon rind and caster sugar in a pan and bring slowly to the boil. Remove from the heat.
4.
Meanwhile, soak the gelatine leaves as in step 1. Remove from the water and stir into the hot cream until completely dissolved. Leave to cool for 30 minutes. Remove the strips of lemon rind and divide the mixture between two bowls. Stir a few drops of pink food colouring into one bowl. Spoon the two mixtures into the ramekins, to give two with colouring and two without. Chill for 6 hours or overnight until set.
5.
To serve, cut and trim the halved brownies to make four heart shapes the same size as the ramekins. Dip each ramekin into a bowl of hot water for a few seconds to release the panna cotta then turn each one out onto a heart-shaped brownie. Decorate with fresh raspberries.
• 75g fresh raspberries, pureed
• 1 sheet leaf gelatine PANNA COTTA • 600ml double cream

COUNCILLORS CORNER I am pleased to report that Cheltenham was recently awarded a Purple Flag for its Night Time Economy. As a member of the Licensing Committee, I wanted to discover more about what happens late at night in Cheltenham. Recently, I spent a Friday night with the Street Pastors, walking around the town talking to the homeless, security staff at nightclubs and lots of revellers. I was surprised how well known and appreciated the Street Pastors were; they were constantly being asked for lollipops and bottles of water. The team I was with (four women and two men) probably had an age range of at least 50 years, yet they were happily out patrolling from 10pm till 4am. We did have a well-earned break for tea and some excellent home-made sandwiches and cake. If they’ll let me, I’ll be
back for another session. I had a rather different experience on another night driving around Cheltenham in the front seat of a police car. It is surprising just how stupid some drivers are when they are being followed by a marked police car! Suspicious vehicles were stopped and drugs and stolen property were found. The focus of the evening had been to ensure that only properly accredited hackney carriage drivers were plying for hire, but all sorts of situations were encountered. The Licensing Committee is a quasi-judicial body which licenses, amongst other things, pubs, betting shops, street traders and sexual entertainment venues. So, I have also found myself visiting establishments where
people have applied for a license for sexual entertainment (whilst the premises were closed, I might add!). All in all, Cheltenham deserves its purple flag, but it needs the co-ordinated efforts of a lot of people to ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience when out late. - Cllr Paul McCloskey Charlton Kings Borough Councillor
Cheltenham Calendar Hello February! This month is going to be rather theatre heavy. So if performing arts isn’t your thing, come back next month for more tip-offs. But for now let’s indulge in a world of imagination and drama, while I talk you through what’s on this month.
everyone from Joanna Lumley to Ant and Dec, who claim it’s “the funniest show we’ve seen! If you can get a ticket, go!” It is already written into my diary and anything the national treasures Ant and Dec recommend I can hardly turn down.
Cheltenham Everyman is spoiling us with a great selection of shows during February. They have made sure to cover all bases by starting the month with some political satire in ‘Politically Incorrect’ closely followed by ‘The Burlesque Show’.
These are just a few that I am looking forward to but if you check out their website there are a lot more such as, ‘A Passionate Woman’, ‘Taking Flight’, ‘Another Fine Mess’, and ‘Labels’.
Then comes the highlight of the programme, in my eyes anyway. ‘The Play that goes wrong’ comes to town with rave reviews from
A recent addition to the Cheltenham Everyman is
by Olivia Scull their 16 - 25 scheme, which to young theatre lovers like me is an absolute dream! £5 tickets give you access to a wide range of shows, they are exactly the same as full price tickets yet ridiculously cheap and I reckon you would be mad not to take advantage of it as much as possible. Well, if all that hasn’t made you itching to book tickets for the coming month then have a look for the chocolate making classes in Gloucestershire, you can never go wrong with chocolate!

Hobbies A Resoundingly Successful Hobby By Kate McLelland Sunday mornings just wouldn’t be the same without them. Weddings would feel less joyous, funerals less solemn. Bell-ringing is a tradition that has lasted for at least two thousand years, so it hardly seems possible that one day local community groups might stop coming together to ring out those powerful messages of joy, sadness and celebration. Unfortunately that day could be closer than you might imagine. A survey recently carried out by BBC local radio shows that bell-ringers across the country are finding it harder and harder to recruit new volunteers. Almost 75% of the bell-ringers questioned said that over the past ten years they have found it harder to find new recruits, particularly young people under the age of 21. There have even been calls to reclassify bell-ringing as a sport in order to gain access to funding, raise its profile and make it appear ‘cooler’ to a younger generation. Ironically this comes at a time when bell-ringing is more in demand than ever. Over sixty per cent of the BBC survey respondents said that requests for their services had increased Page 26
over the past decade. How do I start? You don’t need to be super-fit, or have a lot of upper body strength, to be a bell-ringer. Ringing is the perfect way to enjoy gentle physical exercise and is suitable for people of all ages. The action of pulling on the rope not only gives your muscles a mild workout, it also improves agility, reaction time and co-ordination. There are 40,000 bell-ringers in the UK, many of them qualified to teach. You can find a group near you by going to www. bellringing.org and searching their database, or alternatively ask your local church if they run taster sessions. How do I learn? Novice bell-ringers are usually taught in several stages: during the first session they will learn to handle the bell (this is usually done on a one to one basis); in the second they will learn to ring with others. After this students learn about ‘change ringing’, where ringers are required to sound their bells in a particular order, building up from simple to more complex patterns of ringing. The tutorial period usually ends with a 45-minute
session during which students demonstrate that they have mastered the techniques. tHe benefIts of bellrIngIng Dickon Love, who is Tower Captain at the quaintly named church of St James Garlickhythe in London, describes bell-ringing as “the best of form of heavy metal … a big loud noise. It keeps you fit, there’s a competitive element as well, and it’s a very social thing to do - after each practice without fail you can find us down the local pub.” Many teams also organise monthly gatherings or plan outings to ring bells in different parts of the country, while some are even invited overseas to ring in churches as far away as Australia. If you r competition, you may relish taking part in contests such as the National Twelve-bell Striking Contest. So, if you’re up for some gentle exercise and brain-training, you enjoy socialising with other likeminded people and you want to protect an important part of Britain’s heritage, bell-ringing could be the hobby you’ve been looking for. Join up, and keep those bells sounding well into the future.

Chalk Talk I am absolutely delighted that Parliament backed my campaign to double the maximum sentence for stalking from five to ten years. This was the culmination of a sixteen-month battle that I started back in 2015, together with Richard Graham MP (Gloucester). It began when I first became aware of what had happened to my constituent, Cheltenham GP, Dr Eleanor Aston. Dr Aston had suffered a horrendous, seven-year stalking ordeal. Her stalker was a former patient whose fixation started in 2007. He turned up at her surgery over a hundred times. He posted foul items through the letter box. He followed her on patient visits, slashed her tyres and sent threatening mail. He even appeared at a children’s birthday party her daughter was attending. After serving a short prison sentence, he restarted his campaign.
Back in 2015 the judge who sentenced her stalker at Gloucester Crown Court made clear that he didn't have the powers he needed to protect a victim whose life had been made a misery for an astonishing seven years. I wanted to do something about it. But as you can imagine, getting such a significant change in the law is not an easy task for a newly elected MP. It was a long slog. It involved a debate in the House of Commons, publication of a detailed piece of research, questions to the Prime Minister in Parliament, my introduction of a Private Member's Bill, and countless meetings with MPs of all parties and ministers. I am grateful to the many victims – typically but not exclusively women – I have met who have spoken out, and to the charities like the Suzy Lamplugh Trust and our own Gloucestershirebased Hollie Gazzard Trust. All
played their part, as indeed did the University of Gloucestershire, which has expertise in this field. But above all, I want to pay tribute to my constituent, Dr Aston. It was her ordeal which triggered this campaign. She has shown remarkable bravery – reliving her suffering again and again. Her greatest wish I know is that future victims can receive the full measure of justice that was not available to her. Thanks to her, that will be precisely the result. - by Alex Chalk

Eating Disorders Awareness Week - 27th February to 5th March
Eating disorders affect over 725,000 people in the UK and one in five of those most seriously affected die prematurely through suicide or physical consequences. That’s why it’s essential we’re all aware of the dangers of eating disorders and our susceptibility to them. Forget the stereotypical teenage girl starving herself. There are several different eating disorders that can affect people of any age, gender or ethnicity. WhaT Causes eaTing DisorDers? Often, it’s a combination of genetic, psychological, environmental, social and biological factors. Risk factors are: • Bereavement or abuse. • Being criticised about weight, body shape or eating habits. • Intense stress. • Family history of addiction, depression or eating disorders. • Pressure to be slim from themselves, society or a career/hobby, e.g. dancing, sports. • Underlying issues such as anxiety, low self-esteem, perfectionism or obsessive personality. • Relationship issues. Types oF eaTing DisorDer anorexia nervosa Around 1 in 250 women and 1
Page 32
in 2,000 men will experience anorexia, becoming preoccupied with weighing as little as possible via excessive exercise and/or starving themselves. It usually develops at age 16 or 17 but sometimes, as young as 7. Bulimia Bulimia sufferers alternate between binge eating and purging by inducing vomiting or using laxatives, and 90% are female. It’s more common than anorexia and usually develops at around 18 or 19. Binge eating disorder (BeD) BED affects around 5% of adults, compelling them to eat large amounts of food very rapidly. It affects both sexes equally, usually developing between 30 and 40 years old. eating Disorder not otherwise Specified (EDNOS) Some people may have some but not all of the symptoms of a specific eating disorder, so they receive an EDNOS diagnosis. Diagnosis anD TreaTmenT Doctors and healthcare professionals use internationally agreed criteria to diagnose eating disorders, normally using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) or International Classification of Diseases (ICD). They ask patients about their weight, self-image and relationship with food. But how do you know someone needs to be referred for diagnosis? Often, people with eating disorders will be in denial or try to hide symptoms, but they may: • Skip meals or claim they’ve already eaten/will eat when they’re out. • Only eat tiny/low-calorie meals. • Claim they’re fat when they’re
a healthy weight/underweight. • Repeatedly weigh themselves/ study themselves in the mirror. • Cook large family meals yet eat little themselves. • Refuse to eat in public or become stressed when they do. • Use ‘pro-anorexia’ websites. If you suspect you or someone else has an eating disorder, get professional help immediately. Rapid treatment makes full recovery more likely and minimises the impact on the patient’s body and life. However, recovery can be lengthy and, like the disorders themselves, complex. Physical health is monitored while the disorder’s underlying causes are treated. This may involve: • Self-help books. • Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), aiming to change thinking and in turn, behaviour. • Interpersonal psychotherapy: a talking therapy focusing on relationship issues. • Dietary counselling. • Psychodynamic therapy or cognitive analytic therapy (CAT), focusing on how personality and life experiences influence thoughts and behaviour. • Family therapy, considering the eating disorder’s effects on them and their family. • Medication: often SSRI antidepressants (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). support and more information: Beat (Beat eating Disorders) www.b-eat.co.uk/ For over-18s/those concerned about a child: 0345 634 1414 help@b-eat.co.uk For under-18s: Youth Helpline 0345 634 7650 fyp@b-eat.co.uk

Town Centre Talking Roadworks are a short-term pain – and must mean long-term gain Blooming roadworks. They’re everywhere and they never get finished on time. Well, in the case of Imperial Square, they better had. That is the message we’ve sent loud and clear to Gloucestershire Highways and their contractors as work started in early January on the next stage of the Cheltenham Transport Plan. In conjunction with Cheltenham Borough Council, they’ve committed to ensuring that all the changes to the road layout – affecting Imperial Square, Rodney Road and The Promenade – will be done before Race Week. That is essential. The pressure on the town every year during the races is such that the knock-on impact would be horrendous if the temporary traffic lights and lane closures were still on-going. On the face of it, the local authorities are being realistic. They have said that to minimise the disruption, they won’t even attempt to carry out the final white lining and resurfacing in early March. Instead, that will be done in the week Page 34
beginning March 20th after the racegoers have headed home. Why didn’t they just start earlier? Well, there would have been an even greater impact on town centre businesses if the work had hit the Christmas shopping season. It was actually a good move to delay the start until 2017. It’s probably worth reminding ourselves what the Cheltenham Transport Plan is. Some see it as all about the long-running saga to close Boots Corner (which will be carried out on a trial basis later this year) but it is actually much more than that. While the desire to improve the way traffic moves round the town is very much at its heart, it is also about the way car parks are accessed. The work on Imperial Square will mean that both Regent Arcade and Rodney Road car parks will be on a direct route for traffic entering Cheltenham from the West. So all traffic headed to the town centre through Montpellier will be able to turn right from The Prom rather than go all the way
round the one-way system. Regent Arcade is the biggest town centre car park, with it and Rodney Road between them having more than 660 spaces. It is crucially important as the Transport Plan continues that the signage to all car parks improves. The idea that Cheltenham suffers from a lack of spaces is a myth. But it continues to be difficult to find where the spaces are. Town Centre East (better known by locals as Grosvenor Terrace) has 452 spaces, many of which on the higher floors remain empty for much of the week. It’s crucial that motorists are signposted clearly to this and neighbouring car parks like Sherbourne Place long before the John Lewis store opens. The roadworks aren’t fun but as the changes go on we should find that locals and visitors alike will be able to park in the town centre with a lot less hassle than at present. - by Kevan Blackadder, Cheltenham BID Director

Wireless networking, or Wi-Fi for short, is one of the best and worst technologies of all time. When it works, it’s brilliant; when it doesn’t, it’s infuriating. But solving Wi-Fi worries is often very simple. The most common problem is no signal or poor signal. That’s usually because you’re too far away from the router, or because there are obstacles between you and the router. Metal objects such as radiators are particularly bad, but older buildings with thick walls can be a problem too. The first step is to try moving the router somewhere else - the higher the better, because there are fewer obstacles the closer you get to the ceiling - but if that doesn’t work you could extend your network with a Wi-Fi extender. It picks up the signal from the router and re-broadcasts it, helping to reach places the router can’t.

Home & Interiors Invaluable Decorating Tips By Katherine Sorrell
Planning changes to your home? Interiors expert Katherine Sorrell has some handy hints… Living rooms • Use a scale plan of your room with cut out mini furniture items, and move these around until you find the right positions. • The alcoves either side of a chimney breast are perfect for creating extra storage. • For maximum light, fit a pole or track that overhangs far enough each on side of the window to allow the curtains to be drawn right back. • Avoid using a central hanging pendant as the only light source, but add in table lamps, floor lamps and wall lamps for a more flexible and flattering ambience. • Consider ways to disguise the TV when not in use – can you adapt a piece of furniture, such as an armoire, so that it sits behind closed doors when necessary? Page 36
Kitchens • Have tall cupboards at one end of your cupboard run, with the hob nearby and plenty of worktop space between the hob and the sink. Add the dishwasher on the other side of the sink. • If possible, make worktops 700mm deep instead of 600mm, to give more working space and to better accommodate a large sink. • In an open-plan kitchen, choose quiet appliances, and design so the washing up is hidden from the view of the dining table. • Paint the inside of a wall cabinet door with blackboard paint to give somewhere to write a shopping list. • Base cabinets on legs, or recessed plinths, make the room seem larger.
so keep the walls, floors and major items of furniture relatively neutral and just change accessories, such as rugs, cushion covers and lamp shades, as necessary. • Cover boring walls with blackboard paint, magnetic wallpaper, peg board, maps or wall stickers. • A high-level bed provides space beneath for study, play or storage. • Fit a dimmer switch so you can adjust the light from bright for playing or reading to soft and calm at bedtime. • Storage is all-important. Felt tips and paint brushes can be kept in tins, though beware of sharp edges. For storing tiny Lego sets and the like, ice cream tubs or shoe boxes are ideal.
Bedrooms • Plan storage with precision, and divide the interior of your wardrobe into hanging space plus shelves, drawers and shoe racks. Consider storage gadgets such as belt racks and pull-out trays. • Maximise space by building fitted wardrobes right up to the ceiling. • Add a blackout lining to your curtains, or choose wooden shutters for additional sound and draught-proofing, and security. • Swing-arm lights on either side of the bed free up space on bedside tables. • A blanket box at the end of the bed is ideal for storing bedding and doubles as a seat.
• If you’re on a budget, invest more in taps, shower doors and bath screens and save on a plain white suite, adding decorative appeal with tiles and attractive accessories. • Wall-hung WCs and washbasins create the illusion of extra space. • Hide pipework under floorboards or behind false walls and punch shallow shelves into the studwork to create useful storage niches. • Lights on both sides of your washbasin mirror dispel unflattering shadows. • Chosen a cast iron bath? Check it will fit up the stairs…

Leckhampton locks of love to raise funds for hospice Incredible clusters of engraved padlocks are found as far and wide as the Pont de l'Archeveche in Paris, Brooklyn Bridge in New York and Ponte Milvio in Rome. The locks symbolise people’s immortal love for one another, and this message of enduring love and remembrance is coming to Sue Ryder’s Leckhampton Court Hospice this year. 'Leckhampton Locks of Love’ gives people the opportunity to leave a locked padlock in a special area of the hospice in memory of a loved one in return for a suggested donation, helping to raise much needed funds for the hospice.
encouraged to attend the hospice so they can leave their lock in a special Locks of Love area, centred round the ground’s natural lake. Alysia Cameron Price, Senior Fundraiser at Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court said, “There is huge desire to remember loved ones with memorials in or around our hospice grounds. We wanted to meet that need whilst offering something we think would be really special to signify the enduring love we have for loved ones no longer with us.”
Supporters can either purchase their own lock to have engraved with a special message or purchase a lock from the hospice for £15 to take away with them to add a personal message.
“We have an area around our natural lake which we thought would be the perfect place to offer people the opportunity to place a lock in memory of loved ones. It is a quiet area where people can come and reflect and remember, surrounded by our beautiful hospice surroundings.”
With a minimum donation of £10 supporters will then be

Velvet Underground by Pippa Greenwood
They may be known as ‘velvet coated gentlemen’, but if you have a problem with moles in your garden, it is highly unlikely you will call them anything so polite! So what can you do if your lawn becomes decorated with mounds of finely turned soil, or if plants start to disappear beneath soil level as subsidence occurs within the flowerbed, or an entire row of vegetables is excavated from below? Moles can do a lot of damage to a lawn, largely because that fine soil acts as an excellent seedbed for weeds and can make the lawn surface slippery. Mole runs beneath your lawn, flowerbeds or vegetable plots can occasionally cause the plants to suffer from drought, as the soil is no longer in contact with the roots. Often, when the tunnels collapse subsidence occurs, and plants can literally fall over. Moles can sometimes be deterred by high-pitched sounds or vibrations. Try inserting children’s windmills over the mole infested areas, as the vibration that passes down these into the soil is said to send moles scampering away. Similarly, you can plunge glass bottles into the soil with the neck protruding. The noise Page 40
and vibrations created as the wind whistles over the mouth of the bottles may also discourage moles. Very smelly substances, such as mole smokes, can work against moles. These are like fireworks and, inserted into the run, produce unpleasant smoke. However, with these and other smelly deterrents, once the smell has subsided the mole may return. Traps are available from some garden centres or online stores. They must be correctly set and you must wear gloves as the moles will avoid the trap if they detect human scent. It is much more effective to employ a specialist mole catcher who is adept at trapping them and, since they often charge only on the basis of moles caught, it need not be too expensive a process either. Moles do eventually decide to go elsewhere, and although this does not imply that your garden will then remain free of moles, if the problem has been very bad one year it may not be quite so severe the next. Some say that the plant caper spurge (Euphorbia lathyrus) will deter moles and as it does seem to work for some gardeners and the plants are
fairly attractive it is worth giving it a try! Some gardeners report success with ultrasonic devices that can be inserted into the ground. Once again, I am afraid that it seems the majority of you find these ineffective and indeed I will never forget once seeing a molehill which appeared directly around the base of one of these gadgets in a friend’s garden - so they are not a method I recommend. If all else fails, and attempting to look at this problem in a positive light, bear in mind that incredibly finely turned soil can be useful and many gardeners I know, including the wonderful ‘grandfather of gardening’ Geoffrey Smith, used the soil as a medium in which to grow an excellent crop of seedlings! Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood. com to buy gorgeous UK grown vegetable plants accompanied by weekly advice emails from Pippa, or to peruse the really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items including pop-up crop covers, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, raised bed kits, fleece jackets for plants, pull-out EasyTunnels, signed books and lots more besides.

Lions Clubs International Centenary In 1917 a small group of businessmen in Chicago formed the first Lions Club. Their aim was to help the less fortunate in their community, particularly the blind. Now, one hundred years later, Lions Clubs International is the largest service organisation in the world with 1.4 million members in 50,000 clubs. The first club in the UK was formed at the suggestion of the Queen Mother in 1950 after she witnessed the work of clubs in Canada. The Cheltenham Club was formed in 1960 and there are now over 1000 clubs in the UK. Each one is autonomously working for the benefit of the local community, however, clubs are also united in worldwide causes.
The clubs have always supported projects relating to blindness. In the early years Lions Clubs sponsored the white walking stick, helped organise the first guide dogs training centre and sponsored the talking newspaper for the blind (Cheltenham helped sponsor the local paper in 1976). Nowadays they work closely together with Sightsavers, an international organisation that
Queue waiting for cataract operations Page 42
works in developing countries to treat and prevent avoidable blindness. Last year Lions Clubs gave £65,000 towards Sightsavers projects. In addition, Lions Clubs also collect disused spectacles for transmission to Africa and get involved in various third world country projects. One of these is to provide villages with clean water. To build one well in a third world country costs about £500 and Lions Clubs donated a grand total of £35,000 to this worthwhile cause in the last year alone.
Another of the many Lions Clubs' projects is LIBRA, the Lions International Blood Research Appeal, which helps to provide funds for research at Kings College Hospital (Haematology Unit). The current aim is to provide funds for research into sickle cell disease. £68,000 were donated towards this last year. The Lions Clubs International Foundation also provides immediate aid to disaster areas, such as Haiti following the tornado. Clubs decide independently if they wish to donate to appeals or not. The writer of this article, who has been a member of the Cheltenham Lions Club for 45 years now, rates the tsunami appeal in 2004 as the highlight of his membership. A staggering £14,000 were collected in only one day plus a further £8,000 in the following week and the collection was sent directly to the disaster area. Clubs around the world are taking
on a wide range of projects. In Zimbabwe, for example, local clubs are aiming to facilitate five million injections being given to people in order to eliminate measles and other diseases, this is with LCIF support. In Nigeria accommodation has been built to care for families of cancer patients undergoing treatment and clubs in Kenya are aiming to plant one million trees in four years to help with soil erosion. Nearer to home clubs also have their own projects: Swaffham, for example, decided to hold a blind awareness day to highlight problems blind people face around town, Accrington held a Down Syndrome Awareness Day, Flint held a Prostate Cancer Awareness Clinic (Cheltenham held three in the past two years) and Gower are raising £50,000 for a local boy who lost both his hands following an operation. All this is possible and has been achieved thanks to that small group of people who came up with the idea for the club one hundred years ago. They would be amazed and very proud to find out what they started! The Cheltenham Lions Club meets at the Victory Club on the second and fourth Monday of the month. For more information, please contact Peter Weir on 07973 807159 or President Ron White on 01242 675286. - by David Green, Club PRO

Pager Turners Spring may be just around the corner, but there’s still plenty of temptation to lock the cold, dark winter out and curl up with a book. From gripping psychological thrillers to folklore inspired tales, these books will keep you turning the pages late into the night. The Silkworm – Robert Galbraith (J.K. Rowling) Private Investigator Cormoran Strike is back. This time he’s been asked to find a missing writer. But when the writer turns up dead, his wife, Cormoran’s client, comes under suspicion. Are the clues to the real killer hidden in the writer’s last, unpublished book? A gripping crime novel with echoes of hard-boiled American classics, The Silkworm has plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing. The Bear and The Nightingale – Katherine Arden In the wilds of Russia, folklore and fairy tales do battle with the Church for the villagers’ hearts and minds. As an enigmatic young priest starts to turn his flock away from their centuriesold traditions, the spirit guardians of the homes lose their strength, and darkness threatens to take hold. The only one who might be able to save the villagers is the girl they’ve turned against. Lyrical and beautiful, The Bear and The Nightingale is captivating from the very first page. Hygge – Charlotte Abrahams The Danish concept of hygge has taken the UK by storm. From candlelight and snuggly Page 48
blankets, to dinner with friends, hygge is about wellbeing, cosiness and appreciating the little things. Charlotte Abrahams talks us through how she’s embraced a more ‘hyggelig’ way of life and what it’s meant for her. There are no hard rules, no demands to cut back on this or stop doing that, just a focus on being kinder to ourselves, celebrating the ordinary and enjoying a simpler life. The Girl Before – JP Delaney At first glance One Folgate Street seems like a renter’s dream. Emma certainly thinks so, as does Jane, several months later. But the minimalist house comes with some very strict rules, and as Jane learns of Emma’s death, she starts to wonder whether there’s a darker side to the landlord’s stipulations. A tense psychological thriller, The Girl Before looks set to become one of 2017’s most talked about books. The Phantom Tree – Nicola Cornick Alison is stuck in modern day Britain, hundreds of years after she was born. Mary is back in Tudor England. But only Mary can reveal what happened to Alison’s son all those years
ago. As Alison tries to follow the clues Mary left behind, she uncovers more than she was expecting. Historical fiction with a twist, this is a must for fans of Kate Morton and Barbara Erskine. The Lauras – Sara Taylor When Ma bundles 13 year old Alex out of bed and into the car one night, neither knows just how long their road trip is going to last. Ma takes Alex across America, revisiting the places that shaped her as she was growing up, from foster homes to semi-derelict squats. As their journey progresses, she tells Alex about the ‘Lauras’ – the girls and women who played key roles in her early life. Enthralling. Three Daughters of Eve - Elif Shafak Peri spent her childhood negotiating the distance between her parents. Now she acts the part of a dutiful, Turkish housewife. But when a half-forgotten photograph reminds her of long ago freedoms, Peri struggles to keep up the charade. She can’t help but look back to her days as a student in Oxford, the choices she made, the friends she left behind and the scandal that tore everything apart.

Finance Money Saving Ideas To Get You Back On Track In 2017 By Ann Haldon owned residences around the world. It can often be cheaper than staying in ‘traditional’ hotel rooms or hostels, and offers travellers a vast choice of grades and styles to suit every budget. If you’re searching for ways to save money this year, take a look at some ideas for everyday savings and special treats that won’t break the bank. Discount websites Wowcher, Groupon and Living Social are just three websites offering great deals on everything from holidays to online courses. You simply sign up and input your chosen region to get a local or national deal with as much as 50% discount. couponing You may know couponing as cutting out discount vouchers from the local paper or supermarket magazines. But the practice has taken on a life of its own, with ‘extreme couponing’ hitting the headlines as shoppers save huge amounts on their monthly food bill. Various websites dedicated to couponing tell you where to find the best offers online, but you do need to spend time searching. The Money Saving Expert website has its own coupon page, and if you look at Supersavvyme.co.uk you’ll find a range of coupons for Procter and Gamble products. Airbnb Airbnb is a website offering accommodation in privatelyPage 52
You can choose to rent an entire property, or stay in one of your host’s rooms - all you need to do is enter the date of travel and where you want to go. Some hosts prefer to find out a little more about their guests before they’ll confirm a booking; others offer an ‘Instant Book’ facility. Previous guests leave reviews on the website to give you an idea of the quality you’ll experience, and the company operates a secure online payment service. AmAzon prime Amazon Prime offers films, TV shows, music, books, and a free one-day delivery service for eligible Amazon products, all for a single annual payment of £79. You also get unlimited photo storage, and discounts on video games. If you have a Kindle, you can borrow one book per month free-of-charge from the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library, and also have access to the Kindle First scheme. This allows you to download one of six titles a month for free, or at a reduced price ahead of their official publication date. You can save further by signing up to Prime Early Access, where you’re given the opportunity to purchase ‘Lightening Deals’ 30 minutes before non-Prime members.
Low cost hoteL rooms AnD cAr hire Several websites, including Lastminute.com, Priceline and Hotwire, have a ‘Top Secret Rooms’ section where you can book a top quality hotel room at a fraction of the usual price. All you need to do is choose a location and the hotel star-rating you’re looking for, and pick a hotel from the list returned. You see a description and the hotel’s star-rating; the only drawback is you don’t know the name of the hotel until you’ve paid. You may be able to find out which hotel it is, however, by typing some of the phrases used in these descriptions into a search engine. You can then read reviews on TripAdvisor. com to check that it’s what you want, as once you’ve paid, there is no facility to get a refund. These same websites offer reduced car rental, but you may be able to save even more money using price comparison websites such as Skyscanner, Carrentals, and TravelSupermarket. http://www.wowcher.co.uk/ deals/london http://www.moneysavingexpert. com/shopping/extremecouponing https://www.airbnb.co.uk/ https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/ prime/pipeline/landing?ie=UTF8 &*Version*=1&*entries*=0 http://www.lastminute. com/hotels/top-secret. html?int_type=CMS_HOT&int_ campaign=CNT&int_detail=FB_ 3_TSH
