From the Editor
Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people
Dear Reader, Christmas and the January sales have come and gone and the cold start to the year has certainly kept us on our toes! As we head into February, we have Valentine’s Day to look forward to. Many see Valentine’s Day as a commercial gimmick and the first stumbling block for anyone who had a diet-related New Year’s resolution! Whether you celebrate this day or not, I think it is a great way to remind ourselves to spread a bit of love to those around you. Also, the 14th falls within half term so it provides parents and grandparents with a great theme for doing some arts and crafts or baking with the children! At the start of the year, committees and fete organisers get together to put dates in the diary for future events. Please remember to let us know what you are planning and we might be able to publish your event in the magazine and share it on our social media pages for you. Happy Valentine’s Day to all our readers and thank you for supporting the local businesses within our magazines! See you back here in March. Best wishes, Vicky Muller

Cake & Bake Perfect Pancakes Whip up a classic pancake batter to celebrate Shrove Tuesday. Simply serve the traditional way with sugar and lemon juice or try one of our extra special sweet or savoury serving ideas. Makes 8 - Ready in 30 minutes plus standing time Ingredients: • 100g plain flour • Pinch of salt • 1 large egg
• 300ml milk (or milk and water mixed) • Sunflower oil or unsalted butter, for frying 1. Sift the flour into a large bowl, add the salt and make a well in the centre. Add the egg and beat with a balloon whisk, gradually drawing in some of the flour. 2. Slowly pour in the milk, whisking all the time and drawing in the rest of the flour, until you have a smooth batter which is about the consistency of single cream. 3. Stand the batter for about 30 minutes to allow the starch grains in the flour to soften and expand –this will give a lighter pancake. If the batter has thickened slightly then just whisk in a splash of milk. 4. Heat a little sunflower oil or a knob of butter in a non-stick shallow frying pan (about 20cm diameter)until almost smoking then quickly ladle in enough of the batter to thinly cover the base of the pan, swirling the pan to give an even layer. 5. Cook for 1-2 minutes until small air bubbles appear in the pancake then flip it over and cook for a further minute until golden. Repeat with the rest of the mixture, serving the pancakes as they are cooked or interleaving with baking paper and keeping warm in a low oven. Page 6
SWEET Choc ‘n’ nuts – spread warmed pancakes with chocolate and hazelnut spread then fold into quarters. Drizzle with warmed chocolate sauce and serve with toasted hazelnuts. Orange cream – heat 4tbsp thin-shred marmalade with 150ml orange juice in a frying pan and simmer for a few minutes until syrupy. Fold the pancakes and add to the pan, turning to coat in the syrup. Serve topped with whipped cream or crème fraiche. SAVOURY Cheese and bacon melts – add 2tsp dried Italian herbs to the pancake batter. Fill each cooked pancake with some grated Cheddar and 2 rashers crisply fried smoked bacon rashers. Fold over and pop in a hot oven for 10 minutes until the cheese has melted. Tuna parcels – place a spoonful of canned flaked tuna fish in the centre of each cooked pancake and top with some canned sweetcorn and chopped spring onion. Fold the pancakes to make parcels and enclose the filling. Serve with sweet chilli sauce.

Spiced Bean & Carrot Patties Makes 15
Ready in 35 minutes, plus chilling time
This is a great recipe for meatfree Monday - or any other day of the week! Harissa paste is a fiery hot blend of spices from North Africa sold near the dried herbs in most large supermarkets. If unavailable, replace with 2 tsp curry paste or sun-dried tomato puree.
Ingredients:
Page 10
•
1 tbsp olive oil
•
1 onion, peeled and chopped
•
2 carrots, peeled and grated
•
1tsp harissa paste
•
400g can cannellini beans, drained
•
400g can red kidney beans, drained
•
3 tbsp freshly chopped mint
•
100g fresh wholemeal breadcrumbs
•
Vegetable oil for shallow frying
•
Salad and herb yoghurt dressing, to serve (see TIP)
Heat the olive oil in a frying pan, add the onion and fry for 5 minutes until softened. Cool for 5 minutes then place in a food processor with the carrots, harissa paste, beans, mint and breadcrumbs. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper and process for about 30 seconds until well blended. Shape the mixture into 15 small round patties. Cover and chill for 30 minutes. Shallow fry the patties in hot vegetable oil for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown. Drain on kitchen paper then serve with salad and dressing. TIP Serve these patties with dark green salad leaves such as baby spinach and watercress with chunks of cooked beetroot. For a quick herb dressing, stir lemon juice and freshly chopped mint into natural yogurt and season to taste.

Home & Interiors Fabulous Fireplaces
By Katherine Sorrell
It’s time to put another log on the fire, get cosy and snuggle up until winter is over. Our ideas will help ensure your fireplace looks as good as it makes you feel.
Improve your fIresIde décor
• The fireplace wall is often the focal point of the room, and can look amazing when treated as a feature wall, using either striking wallpaper or a paint colour that contrasts with, yet also complements, the colours used in the rest of the room. • Fireplace accessories can be quite distinctive and are usually on display, so choose pieces, whether contemporary or traditional, that co-ordinate both with your room as a whole and with each other. • Above the fireplace, add either a work of art or a mirror that is proportionate to the space. A mirror is very useful for reflecting light around the room, but don’t feel it has to be a traditional overmantel – something more contemporary may fit better with your style. • Think about what is displayed on your mantelpiece. Photographs, candles, small ornaments and vases of flowers, collections… anything goes provided it fits. A formal, symmetrical arrangement is easy to achieve and suits a traditional room, or else something more freeform can be eye-catching and intriguing. • Not using your fireplace? It can still be a great feature. Stack logs within it, prop up a framed picture, display a large ornament such as a shell, a piece of coral or antlers, set up a group of candles, or simply use the space for a display of flowers in a simple vase.

Refresh your fireplace, and the wall around it, with carefully chosen wallpaper or a fresh coat of paint. Walls: Dimpse No.277 Estate Emulsion, £43.50 for 2.5l; woodwork: Wevet No.273 Estate Eggshell, £24 for 750ml; fireplace: Mole’s Breath No.276 Estate Eggshell, £24 for 750ml; all Farrow & Ball. Perfect for kindling or newspapers, this hand-made leather bucket is made in a family co-operative in Rajasthan using natural dyes. It costs £89.95 from Decorator’s Notebook. Every ‘real’ fire needs a tool set. In wrought iron with an antiqued finish, this trio of poker, fork and grabbers will help you get the flames going on a chilly evening. Fireside tool set, £44.50, Garden Trading. If a rustic log basket isn’t your look, consider a minimal metal holder instead. Lodge round log carrier in steel, £57, Garden Trading.
Sturdy yet easily portable, this Scandinavian-designed fire screen is both smart and practical. Garden Trading Jutland fire screen in steel, £75, Black By Design. A reindeer hide is just the thing for throwing down in front of the fire. This extra-large one is a natural by-product of the meat industries in Finland and Norway, and costs £170 from The French Bedroom Company.

Lions Club of Cheltenham 200 Club The 200 Supporters Club costs £13 per year and is open to anyone. Members are entered into a draw every month with two £25 prizes and twice a year there is a draw for £200, a total of £1,000 per annum. The proceeds are used for the benefit of local projects. In the past few years, money has been given for the purchase of exam reader pens for students with dyslexia, a football kit for a youth team, a hearing loop for a retirement home and a bed for a family in need. Funds have also been used to help the Cotswold
Listener to update from cassettes to memory sticks and to fit the Lions Club's Holiday Caravan at Burnham on Sea, which enables local people with a disability to go on a holiday, with TV and radio. Another time money was used to help send a local scout troop to Jamboree in Switzerland. Membership application forms are available from Alex Bryce on 01242 239212 or via e-mail: alex.bryce@ hotmail.com. They can also be found on the Cheltenham Lions Club's website. Club members are preparing for a busy spring, commencing with a book sale in the Regent Arcade from Monday 19th to Sunday 25th February. Come along and browse hundreds of good quality secondhand books at £1! Preparations are also
Cheltenham Calendar Is that love in the air or are the temperatures finally rising above freezing? With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, I’ve got some fab ideas for what to do this month, whether you want to surround yourself with hearts and flowers or just curl up in front of Netflix with cheap chocolate for company. It sickens some and is adored by others, the day celebrating St Valentine has taken over the month of February. My plan for the 14th is to head to M&S, pick up one of their readymade meal deals for two and hide away from the commercial madness. But if you fancy a romantic meal out then Gloucestershire is the area to be. There are hundreds of places to eat and here are some of the Valentine's Day deals to choose from... Hillside Brewery is pulling out all the stops with a three-course meal on the 17th for just £35 per couple (£17.50 each). Indulge in a Moroccan starter, followed by a tasty “BeerGuigion” or roasted root vegetable before finishing the meal off with a decadent trio of chocolate desserts.
underway for a plant sale in Charlton Kings on Saturday 5th May and at the Exmouth Arms, Bath Road on Saturday 26th May. On 19th May the Club's friends from Treorchy Male Choir will be singing at the Roses Theatre, Tewkesbury in aid of Focus with proceeds going to local Prostate Cancer Care. The Cheltenham Lions Club meets at the Victory Club on the second and fourth Monday of every month. the Great War promises to be a heart-warming and tear-jerking show.
The DoubleTree Hotel in Cheltenham provides beautiful surroundings and offers an exquisite three-course Valentine's meal along with a bottle of bubbly and a box of chocolates. Other romantic destinations include The Daffodil and Lumiere and L’Artisan, both of which are providing incredible Valentine's Day experiences. Contact them directly for more information.
A special mention must also go to the Owl Event at the ICBP Newent on February 14. After a champagne and chocolate reception, you can join a torchlight tour of the grounds before watching a nighttime owl display. Seeing the owls fly around their natural habitat makes for a truly magical experience.
If you aren’t hungry then may I suggest a night out at the theatre? Who would not be impressed with such a high-brow date? Kicking off the month at the Cheltenham Everyman is 'Flashdance' with Joanna Clifton running until the 3rd, closely followed by the Everyman original production 'Quartet' which runs over Valentine's Day (8th - 17th). Closing the month will be 'Birdsong' from the 19th to the 24th. The critically acclaimed show based on love, bravery and
It appears that February is the month of beer. In addition to the Hillside Brewery Valentine's meal, there will be a Cheltenham microbrewery tour and other exciting ‘Brewed for you’ beer events. Check out www.visitcheltenham. co.uk for more information. So whether you end up drowning your sorrows in a beer tasting session or celebrate the occasion with your other half, may your February be full of love and loved ones.

Chalk Talk At first glance, the news that Cheltenham was Britain’s biggest property price ‘winner’ in 2017 is great news for local homeowners and a vote of confidence in the town. Cheltenham saw the highest percentage rise in house prices of any town or city in 2017, a recent study showed. House prices increased at nearly five times the UK average, rising by an average of £36,033 to £313,150. That was a 13 percent jump compared with 2.7 percent nationally. Fifteen of the top 20 performers over the past year were in London and southern England, the study by the Halifax found. Our town was something of an outlier, claiming top spot and leading the rest of country. It’s no surprise that people want to live in Cheltenham. The town is on the up. Thanks to the brilliant support of local people, our campaigns for more secondary school funding for
Vision 21 Vision 21 was established in 1994 and our aim is to make Gloucestershire more sustainable. This means more than it sounds and is not just about helping the environment, it is about creating vibrant and healthy communities. We are a small charity of limited means and so we must adopt a pragmatic approach to why, what, where and how we do things, in order to maximise our impact. As a guide, we focus our attention on the following 5 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals: • Climate Action • Sustainable Communities • Responsible Consumption • Clean Energy • Education. Most of our work is community-based and we have several projects on the go in Cheltenham, which include:
Cheltenham have been successful (10% in the case of one school). Plus we’ve won Government investment for the town in digital security, the new cyberpark and improved transport links. There’s a growing buzz about the town, and new businesses are being attracted by what Cheltenham has to offer. But as every parent and grandparent dreads, there can be a downside to rising house prices. Rents go up and our children wonder if they will ever be able to afford to buy their own home? It’s why I believe, put simply, Cheltenham needs more homes for young families. We need a mixed-age, vibrant, community. In 2010, housebuilding had reached its lowest level since the 1920's and the number of homes available for social rent had fallen through the floor. Significant progress has been made in the last few years to tackle this crisis. The supply of homes has

Local councils and housing associations are now able to access support to build more homes, at rents that are affordable for local people, through the Government’s £9 billion+ Affordable Homes Programme. The ambitious target is now to build 300,000 homes per year nationwide. We all know it is a challenge to identify suitable sites here in Gloucestershire. But with the local councils having picked their preferred locations and signed off the so-called Joint Core Strategy it’s time to secure a homeowning future for the next generation. - by Alex Chalk

Time to Get Pruning by Pippa Greenwood
At this time of year the weather is often perfect for pruning and cutting back woody plants, so take advantage of the fact that deciduous trees, shrubs, hedges and climbers are now devoid of leaves and get stuck in. Here’s how to make sure your pruning will really benefit your plants: • For a small hedge or to roughly reshape a shrub, a good, sharp pair of well-oiled shears should do the job. Angle the blades to make a level trimmed surface. To make a neat and level surface when cutting the top of a hedge, use a taut string as a guide line. For large hedges consider using a powered hedge cutter or hedge trimmer, but make sure you can use it safely! • When removing stems at various heights and of varying thicknesses, use ‘loppers’, which are much better at cutting through relatively thick stems than shears or secateurs and yet also allow for accurate positioning of the cut. When cutting back branches above your head, wear protective headgear and goggles. • Secateurs are used for the most precise pruning of smaller woody stems. Page 20
Provided they are good and sharp, you can make a perfectly clean and accurate cut. Always cut to an outwardfacing bud (so that the new growth produced from that bud grows outwards). Secateurs are good for removing dead and dying stems as well as for formative pruning (where you are helping to ensure the plant grows in the direction you want it to), and for pruning to encourage flowering. • To remove larger tree branches or if you have fruit trees to prune, then a pruning saw is the perfect tool. Use a sawing action for best results and make the cut a few millimetres from the main stem to which the branch you are removing is joined. A cut like this will heal quickly and the wound will be smaller and less prone to fungal rotting. • Check the best pruning time for the plants you have in mind. Although most hedges and many shrubs can be cut back now, there are exceptions. • Some trees - mainly those in the Prunus family such as cherries, plums, apricots, damsons, peaches and nectarines - are very prone to a potentially fatal fungal
infection known as ‘silver leaf’. To reduce the likelihood of this, prune these trees in the summer unless there is no alternative. • Pruning tools should be really sharp; if blunt, the job will need more effort and may result in damage to the plant from a jagged cut or crushed stems. • Create sloping cuts whenever you can so that rain and moisture runs off (wetness encourages wood rotting), and cut close to but not on top of a bud to allow new growth without dieback - you will need to use secateurs, loppers or a saw to do this. • Stand back from time to time when pruning to check the overall appearance of the plant and judge which part to tackle next, as close up it is harder to see how your pruning is affecting the overall shape of the plant. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com and you’ll find some great gardening things: ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ (where you receive your chosen garden-ready vegetable plants in the spring accompanied by weekly advice and tips from Pippa) plus Nemaslug, biocontrols, gardening tools, raised bed kits, Grower Frames, signed books and more!

Town Centre Talking It’s dark outside – just the time to light up Cheltenham Fed up with those dark winter mornings? With the harsh winter we’re having, they do seem to be dragging on for even longer this year. And what about the end of the day? In February we’ll still be plunged into darkness at around 5.00pm. The clocks don’t move forward until 25th of March. It’s no wonder that so many town centre businesses find this the most difficult time of the year. Not only has everybody spent up in the run-up to Christmas, but they have more reason to stay at home. Even when it’s not dark outside, it’s probably going to be cold, wet or both. Businesses from shops to pubs and from hairdressers to restaurants all suffer from the “February factor”. Cheltenham Business Improvement District (BID) is hoping to help bring a new brightness to the town centre in February this year with the launch of 'Light Up Cheltenham'. We’ve been speaking to the owners of many landmark buildings and as a result, you’ll be able to see them lit in a way you’ve never seen before. Six buildings will be floodlit throughout February half-term, with a musical launch event also being planned for Saturday 10th February. Spectacular street theatre drumming group Spark!, who have been a massive hit in towns and cities across the UK and beyond, will launch the event at the Brewery Quarter at 5.00pm. Page 22
As the lights go on all over town, they will then perform for a second time outside the Quadrangle on Imperial Square at around 5.45pm. Keep an eye on the BID’s website www.cheltenhambid. co.uk for more details. The Municipal Offices, the Queens Hotel, Boots, the Brewery Quarter, Cheltenham Town Hall and the new John Lewis building on the High Street are all involved. And it won’t stop there. Many buildings that are already lit will change the colour of their lights to fit in with the colours we are using elsewhere. These include Martin & Co, Beards, the United Services Club, MooMoos, Fever and three buildings on the Promenade – 131, Knight Frank and Cotswold Transport Planning. Others, including Regency buildings opposite those we are using for the main 'Light Up Cheltenham' event, are also likely to be lit. The overall result will be to give people another reason to come into town in the late afternoon and evening. If you’re thinking about popping into town to do a bit of shopping, why not add a tour of the lights as well? You might
even stumble across a business you didn’t know existed. And that evening drink or meal will also have an added attraction. Catch the lights before or after you visit the pub or restaurant. One real contrast will be between the new and the old. The new-look Brewery Quarter is a building of the 21st century and has proved a popular addition to the town. The lights will give it a different look again. Going back in time, you may never have studied the intricate detail on the top two floors of Boots. The lights will draw a new audience. Hopefully, 'Light Up Cheltenham' will be another way of opening people’s eyes to the great mix that Cheltenham has to offer. - by Kevan Blackadder, Cheltenham BID Director

If your laptop or desktop computer is getting very slow, you can make it feel like a much newer machine by replacing the hard disk with a solid state drive (SSD). Prices have fallen considerably — you can get a really fast Samsung SSD with 250GB of storage space for less than £90 — and installing them is a pretty simple DIY job you can do in about ten minutes unless it’s an iMac, which is infuriatingly fiddly and best left to your local Apple expert. You can clone your existing drive using an app such as Super Duper on the Mac or EaseUS Todo Backup Free on PC, but always remember: if something on your computer is important to you, make sure you have backup copies just in case.

Hidden Gems We usually focus on new releases for our book reviews, but this time we’ve scoured the back catalogues for a few gems you might have missed. Station Eleven – Emily St. John Mandel From Kirsten – child actor turned travelling thespian – to aspiring doctor Jeevan, the novel tells the individual stories of several people before, during and after a pandemic that wipes out most of the population. Gripping, beautiful and all too plausible, Station Eleven is a must for fans of Margaret Atwood, Erin Morgenstern and Suzanne Collins. Harry Potter series – JK Rowling, illustrated by Jim Kay There can’t be many people who haven’t heard of the boy wizard by now. If you’re a fan, you might want to consider upgrading your paperbacks for the hardbacks illustrated by Jim Kay. One is being released each year, starting with The Philosopher’s Stone in 2015, so the first three are currently available to buy. Kay’s illustrations are superb and incredibly detailed. Prefer e-readers? Check out the Kindle in Motion editions, which animate parts of the illustrations, so you can watch Harry fly through the air in hot pursuit of the golden snitch while you’re reading. Page 24
The Mysterious Affair at Cuckoo Song – Frances Hardinge Cuckoo Song was first published in 2014, the year before Frances Hardinge’s Costa Award-winning novel The Lie Tree. Eleven year old Triss wakes up from an accident to find things aren’t as they were. She can’t satisfy her immense hunger for a start; her sister is terrified of her; and even her dolls have turned against her. Is she going mad, or is the truth even more terrifying? A thoroughly enjoyable, fantastical read, Cuckoo Song is sure to prove a hit with fans of Neil Gaiman and Angela Carter. The Crow Road – Iain Banks The Crow Road covers some pretty big themes – love, death, religion, drugs and fractured families being just a few of them. Prentice McHoan returns home for his grandmother’s funeral and soon gets drawn into trying to solve the mystery of his Uncle Rory’s disappearance. It’s a dark, intense novel and far from an easy read, but the wit and sheer beauty of the writing could well make it one of your all-time favourites.
Why Mummy Drinks – Gill Sims Gill Sims is the author of a hugely successful Facebook blog – Peter and Jane’s Mummy. Why Mummy Drinks was released last autumn and quickly became a bestseller. Written in diary format, it tells the story of Ellen, a 39 year old mum of two, who’s trying to balance work and children, while navigating playground politics, irritating in-laws and an ex-boyfriend. The ensuing drama is extremely funny and very relatable if you’re a parent who isn’t quite ready to hang up her dancing shoes. Styles – Agatha Christie If last year’s hit film Murder on the Orient Express has tempted you to dip into the works of Agatha Christie, why not start with her very first novel? Published in 1920 and set during World War I, it introduces readers to the brilliant mind of Belgian refugee Hercule Poirot. The murder of a woman has everyone pointing the finger at one man. It’s down to Poirot to find out the real culprit before it’s too late. While The Mysterious Affair at Styles is not considered Christie’s finest work, there are still plenty of twists and turns to keep you hooked.

Weaving world’s first knitted garden for RHS Malvern Spring Festival
A Gloucestershire widow is creating a full size knitted show garden installation at RHS Malvern Spring Festival in memory of her husband to help raise £50,000 for the hospice charity which helped care for him and to aid in her battle with anxiety and depression since his death. Clare Young, 50, from Gloucester, supported by a team of friends, crafters and community groups has started work on the full-size show garden installation for the RHS Malvern Spring Festival called the ‘Work of Heart’ garden. Clare said: “My husband Ken died at Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice in August 2015 at the age of 47. After Ken died, I found life very difficult. I was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety and my clinical psychologist suggested knitting as a way to help my symptoms. "I’ve always tried to turn all negatives into positives since Ken died, so I picked up my knitting needles. I started by creating knitted Christmas decorations and Easter Bunnies which raised £1,300 for the hospice where Ken was looked after. This was followed by installing a yarn bombed message of thanks in the hospice grounds in the May 2017 with the help of a group of friends and knitters. This led to an invitation for us to do something really special at RHS Malvern Spring Festival." The invitation was from Clare’s friend Suzy Hillier, Head of Commercial at Three Counties Showground, which is home to the RHS Malvern Spring Festival, when Clare and Suzy came up with the idea of knitting a garden for RHS Malvern at Clare’s 50th birthday party. Clare also wanted to find a special way to mark what would’ve been Ken’s 50th birthday in 2018 and soon the £50,000 fundraising target to thank Sue Ryder and pay tribute to the poignant occasion became her focus. The incredible installation measuring Page 26
4m by 4m will include a hospice bedroom overgrown with knitted plants known for their healing properties. It will feature lavender, used by complementary therapists in reflexology treatment for patients at the hospice, and rosemary as ‘rosemary for remembrance’ was a saying Lady Ryder, the founder of the Sue Ryder charity, used often. Clare added: “As part of the installation we want to include 10,000 ‘works of heart’ – small hand knitted or crocheted hearts - created by local knitters, community groups and celebrities. These will be made available for visitors to place on trees around the ‘Work of Heart’ garden in return for a donation to the hospice charity, making it a living and growing display over the course of the festival. “We need as many people as possible to pick up their knitting and crochet needles to help us create these 10,000 hearts. That’s why we are asking people to create a ‘Work of Heart’ for our garden.” With the winter months traditionally seeing a spike in searches for knitting online, Clare and The Knits, a core team of knitters affectionately known as The Knits, thought it is the perfect time to launch a campaign asking people to create a ‘A Work of Heart’ for the knitted garden. They are teaming up with knitting groups, community groups and knitting shops to run a series of ‘Work of Heart’ workshops encouraging knitters and crafters to create a ‘work of heart’ for the hospice charity show garden. For details of the workshops visit workofheartgarden.org. Anyone wanting to contribute to the garden can also visit the website to find details of a pattern to create their own ‘Work of Heart’ and details of where to send it.
tranquillity where people living with conditions like cancer, heart disease, lung failure and neurological conditions can come to receive expert specialist care so they can live the fullest lives possible for as long as possible. I know Clare’s creation will capture and share this peace and tranquillity with the aim of generating interest, inspiration and positivity about hospice care. We’d like to encourage as many people as possible to support Clare’s campaign to create 10,000 hearts for the knitted garden, and to come along and see the knitted garden itself at the RHS Malvern Spring Festival in May.” Suzy Hillier said: “RHS Malvern exemplifies excellence in gardening and values the role horticulture plays in our health and wellbeing. The saying goes “A beautiful garden is a work of heart’ and this created a compelling synergy for the ‘Work of Heart’ garden to be featured at the Festival. With Gloucestershire - the home of Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice - being one of the three counties along with Worcestershire and Herefordshire, we’re delighted to able to showcase this unique installation. We expect more than 100,000 people to attend the festival between May 10th and 13th, giving them the opportunity to see this once in a lifetime creation.” To get behind Clare’s fundraising effort and make a donation please visit http://www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/workofheartgarden For more information on the Work of Heart Garden in support of Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice visit workofheartgarden.org, like www.facebook.com/WorkofHeartGarden on Facebook or follow @WorkofHeart Knit on Twitter or 'workofheartgarden' on Instagram. Alternative Ways to Invest In Property
Although property remains a popular long-term investment, lending restrictions make it difficult for first-time buyers to secure a foothold on the property ladder. Furthermore, the introduction of a buy-to-let stamp duty surcharge, and reduction of mortgage interest tax relief, have made buy-to-let less lucrative. So are there any other options that could be suitable if you’re interested in property investing? Here are a few alternatives that might appeal, but as with any other form of investment, it’s crucial to carry out plenty of research. Property crowdfunding involves investing in property itself, as opposed to peer-to-peer lending where you invest in the mortgages provided to buyto-let landlords and property developers. So how do these systems work? ProPerty equity crowdfunding Each property is held within its own limited company - you purchase a share of the company and own a small part of the property along with fellow investors. After registering on a property crowdfunding website, you can search for properties of interest and then make the investment online. • You receive a return on your investment via rental payments and also, potentially, capital gains. • You can spread your investment across a number of
Page 28
different properties. • Fees include a fundraising/ finder’s fee, along with property management fees. • A share of the profits is also deducted by the crowdfunding platform at the end of each investment term. Peer-to-Peer lending Rather than investing in the property itself, you and other investors provide the money for loans and mortgages that buy-to-let landlords and property developers use. • Return on investment comes from interest paid on the loan. • Platforms provide details of any payment defaults by borrowers, so you can make a more informed decision on whether to lend. • Investments may be made over a shorter term than property crowdfunding, which is important if you don’t want to tie up your money for too long. direct commercial ProPerty funds You can invest in commercial property via unit trusts or openended investment companies (OEICs), but you should seek professional advice on the best investments for your particular circumstances. Your money is combined with that of other investors and fund managers decide on the best investments. These could be solely in the UK or internationally, depending on the property fund you’ve chosen, and may be in retail, office or industrial property. • You’ll pay a fee for the fund to be managed. • Capital gains tax and tax on dividends received will need to be taken into account. • You may be able to hold a property fund within a stocks and shares ISA. • You can either pay a monthly
amount or a one-off investment sum. The concept of small investments spread over a diverse property or loan portfolio runs through these options, but what if you do want to purchase an entire property rather than use these ‘hands-off ’ alternatives? furnished holiday lets Buying a property as a furnished holiday let avoids some of the drawbacks of buy-to-let investment. It offers specific tax advantages and can bring a higher overall return than buy-to-let. Holiday let mortgage providers generally require a deposit of 25%-40%. The amount they’ll lend depends on the existing rental income, or the income as estimated by an experienced local holiday letting agent. Furnished holiday lets haven’t been affected by the clampdown on tax relief faced by buy-to-let investors. Although they require more work in terms of regular marketing, they’ve become a popular way to earn money from property.

COUNCILLORS CORNER What would you like Gloucestershire to be like in 2050? This is not a hypothetical question. The ‘Big Conversation’ was launched at the Racecourse on 1st February. It was the start of a process to engage people of all ages across the county in thinking about the future, and what we would like Gloucestershire to be like. The project is being led by the University; it brings together businesses, schools and community groups to think about what sort of future we want. 32 years ago we wrote the year 1986. Do you remember Chernobyl, John McCarthy being kidnapped or Maradona and the ‘hand of God’? The M25 was opened that year - a lot has happened in the last 32 years, there is no reason to believe that there won’t be just as much change in the next 32 years. What nobody wants is urban sprawl
eliminating the green space between Cheltenham and Gloucester, but what might we do to augment the different strengths of Cheltenham and Gloucester? What could we do to make the whole area more attractive to families and business? Currently, many of our young people leave. For them, house prices are unaffordable and we don’t have the right sort of jobs to keep them. How can we create a future for everyone? Shorter term projects are also coming to fruition. As you read this, phase three of the Cheltenham Transport Plan should be about to happen in
Royal Well; John Lewis will be about to open and work is underway on the new crematorium. Our Victorian forefathers had the vision to build a cemetery that has been in use for 150 years now. What lasting legacy can we leave to our descendants? - Cllr Paul McCloskey Charlton Kings Borough Councillor

How To Get A Good Night’s Sleep
• • • • A poor night’s sleep might seem like just an inconvenience. But research has shown that insufficient or poor-quality sleep can contribute to serious health problems, including: • Weight gain and obesity. • Weakened immunity. • Increased risk of diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, heart attack and stroke. • Reduced fertility and libido. • Reduced memory, concentration and reaction times. • Increased risk of depression, anxiety, paranoia, hallucinations and psychotic episodes. This means it’s vital that we all get enough good quality sleep, which usually means at least seven hours. However, it’s not always easy. The enemies of sleep • Burning the candle at both ends, trying to fit in relaxation and domestic duties. • Sleep disorders: night terrors, sleep walking, sleep talking, sleep paralysis, teeth grinding, restless limb syndrome and sleep apnoea. • Needing the toilet. • Pain e.g. from arthritis. • An uncomfortable mattress or pillow. • Menstruation (pain, heavy bleeding and hormonal Page 34
changes that affect temperature and production of the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin). Snoring. Blue light. Smoking and alcohol. GORD (Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease) or LPR (laryngopharyngeal or ‘silent’ reflux, in which stomach acid can damage airways, causing asthma-like symptoms)
Ten Tips To help You sleep: 1. Stop snoring. Maintaining a healthy weight can help. Try sleeping on your side, nasal strips, sprays or mandibular adjustment devices. If these don’t work, consult your doctor, as you may be receiving a reduced oxygen supply at night. 2. Don’t go to bed hungry - but don’t eat late. Don’t eat less than two hours before bedtime. If you’re hungry in the evenings, choose something light and easily digestible. Milk can make you feel full and its tryptophan can help sleep, but it’s absorbed poorly (a carbohydrate-rich snack at the same time may help). 3. Stop smoking and eliminate evening alcohol and caffeine. Caffeine is a stimulant and both nicotine and alcohol affect our sleep length and quality. All three can contribute to GORD and LPR. 4. Look after your body and its clock. Our bodies need exercise and daylight during the day and a more relaxed, dim environment in the evening to trigger our body
clock regulation hormones. 5. Avoid blue light two hours before bedtime. Blue light, produced by modern TVs, tablets, computers and mobiles, interferes with melatonin production. While blue light filters help, most just reduce, rather than eliminate, blue light. 6. Declutter your brain. Try writing down your worries and to-do lists before bedtime. It can be therapeutic in itself, and relieves the stress of trying to remember everything. 7. Have a night-time routine. Choose relaxing activities like reading in the hour or two before bedtime. Try having a warm (not hot) bath with relaxing aromatherapy oils. 8. Make your bedroom a haven. Avoid using your bedroom as a work space or dumping ground for clutter. Keep your bedroom well ventilated, not too hot or cold, and softly lit. Try blackout blinds - and earplugs if you have noisy housemates or neighbours. Invest in a comfortable, supportive mattress and pillows. 9. Don’t lie there worrying about not sleeping. Instead, get up and do something relaxing, such as reading a magazine or doing a jigsaw, until you feel sleepy. 10. Finally, see your doctor if you have problems with hormonal changes, night time urination, mental health, GORD, LPR or pain – or if these tips don’t work. Your GP can investigate possible causes and recommend helpful treatments and lifestyle changes.

Cloakroom refitting with building works to accommodate a shower. “An excellent job that started and finished on time. Moreover Matt had allowed sufficient margin for including significant additional work we requested. A good team who adapted to circumstances and tried to minimise the inevitable dust and mess. Highly recommended.”
