From the Editor Dear Reader,

Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and have been able to take some time out to relax and enjoy the festive season with family and friends. I would like to thank all our readers for supporting the local businesses that have advertised with us in 2017 and would like to wish you all a very Happy New Year on behalf of the entire Glos Directories team. We hope 2018 brings you everything you have wished for. If you have made some New Year’s resolutions for the new year, I hope they last longer than mine! Normally by the end of January, they have fallen by the wayside and I’ve forgotten all about them… Don’t forget the Everyman Theatre still has Dick Whittington and his Cat on until Sunday 7th January and the Bacon Theatre is staging Aladdin between the 18th and 21st, so if you haven’t already, why not take the family out to watch a funny pantomime. To see what else is on in January, have a look at our “What’s On” pages towards the back of the magazine. Our monthly articles are always a great read, so grab a cup of tea and that last slice of Christmas cake and enjoy the January issue of the magazine. Best wishes,

Vicky Muller

Make learning Spanish your New Year's resolution! Instant Spanish is owned and run by Esperanza Marques, a fully qualified teacher, born in Zaragoza, Spain. Having completed her degree, Espe worked in the Spanish state school system, teaching English and other subjects to primary school children and adults. Esperanza moved to the UK in 2015 to follow her dream of living here. She started this business immediately and has been growing it ever since. She now offers individual and group adult classes to anyone who wants to learn or improve their Spanish language skills. Her classes are conversation-based, using vocabulary that is useful for people travelling, or for those who spend more time in Spain. She is also available for tutoring younger people, including GCSE help for secondary school students and help for students preparing their A-Levels. Classes are given in the Tivoli section of Cheltenham. Many of Espe’s students have been with her since the beginning and are very happy with the progress that they have made. The classes are fun and dynamic, with new vocabulary introduced each week. When Espe isn’t teaching her hobbies include piano, art, writing, travelling, salsa dancing and visiting museums. If you would like more information about Espe and her business, you can check out her website at www.instantspanish.co.uk or call her on 07710 687731.

PACIFISTS AND PROTESTERS THE LOST STORY OF RESISTANCE TO WORLD WAR ONE An original theatre piece to tour Stroud, Bristol & Cheltenham between 9th & 17th February 2018 The Gloucester Theatre Company has created a stunning new piece of theatre to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of The First World War. The piece features a production of a new play called A DANGEROUS WOMAN (shortlisted for the Adrian Pagan New Writing Award) and a devised presentation, inspired by the words of poets, pacifists and other protesters. The project has received support from The Heritage Lottery and will explore a largely-forgotten aspect of the history of WW1 - namely that many people opposed it on the grounds that it was an unnecessary “politician’s war”, which could have been resolved through peaceful means. A DANGEROUS WOMAN tells the incredible story of Alice Wheeldon, a Suffragette and single-mother, who sheltered conscription-evaders from arrest. On the basis of fabricated evidence, Alice was imprisoned for “attempting to assassinate the Prime Minister”, though she was later cleared of all charges. Her story is a powerful human drama, exposing just how far the British Government was prepared to go to silence those who opposed the war. The cast for the show includes a mixture of exciting and upcoming young actors – recent graduates of RADA and LAMDA – and more seasoned professionals from the South West. It is directed by The Gloucester Theatre Company’s Artistic Director, Alexander J Gifford.

For a trailer for the show as well as more information on the company and production, please see: www.thegloucestertheatrecompany.co.uk

Chalk Talk You wait ages for a bus, then three come along at once. The same is true for Prime Minister’s Questions in Parliament it seems. PMQs is a great place to highlight important issues both nationally and for Cheltenham. I’ve spent months trying to catch the Speaker’s eye. Just before Christmas marked the third Wednesday in a row that I was called to quiz the PM.

Gloucestershire residents. Our thoughts go out to everyone involved or injured. And thousands of local people continue to waste hours every year snarled up in traffic heading up Crickley Hill, at the Air Balloon roundabout or at Nettleton Bottom. The gridlock damages productivity, stifles job creation in Cheltenham and causes unnecessary air pollution.

Two weeks before, I took the opportunity to raise the future of Cheltenham’s A&E. Then I called on the Government to continue to develop our country’s ability to strike back in cyberspace to deter aggressive cyber threats from abroad.

But after the hugely welcome Government commitment in 2014 to fund this strategic roads scheme, many of us in Cheltenham have been growing increasingly frustrated at the ponderous pace of the clunky road planning machine. I and my Gloucestershire MP colleagues are demanding progress.

Just before Christmas, I took the opportunity to seek the Prime Minister’s personal backing for the A417 roads investment scheme. It’s timely. Every month there seems to be another smash on this notorious road, causing traffic chaos for

So I was delighted that the Prime Minister confirmed that she understood the concerns of Gloucestershire drivers and reiterated the Government’s financial

backing. Crucially too she confirmed that we will shortly be arriving at an important milestone – namely a public consultation on two shortlisted schemes, starting within the next few weeks. This is really positive news. Make no mistake – any roads scheme will be controversial but we have a golden opportunity to get something done to make Gloucestershire fit for the future. The consultation will give us the chance to get everything lined up for the actual build, all the engineering and legal preparation that goes with such a major scheme. Let’s seize it! - by Alex Chalk

Cake and Bake Baked Pears with Cinnamon Oat Topping You can use any pear variety for this winter warming fruity pudding. Serve with custard or crème fraîche and a drizzle of warmed honey, if liked.

Ingredients: • 4 medium-sized firm pears • 150ml apple or orange juice • 50g unsalted butter • 75g rolled oats • 50g Demerara sugar • 25g walnut pieces, chopped • 1tsp ground cinnamon, plus extra to sprinkle

Serves 4 Ready in 1 hour

TIP

This recipe will work just as well with crisp eating or cooking apples instead of the pears. Page 10

1.

Preheat the oven to 180C/Fan 160C/gas mark 4. Halve the pears lengthways and scoop out the cores with a teaspoon. Place the pear halves in a shallow ovenproof dish, cut-side up.

2. Pour the apple or orange juice into the dish

and dot the pears with half the butter. Cover loosely with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, melt the rest of the butter in a small pan then remove from the heat, add the oats, sugar, walnuts and cinnamon and stir to combine.

3. Remove the foil and spoon the oat mixture

over the top of the pears. Bake the pears, uncovered, for a further 20-25 minutes until tender with a crisp topping. Serve warm, sprinkled with a little more cinnamon, if liked.

Home & Interiors Light Up Your Winter

By Katherine Sorrell

In the darkness of deepest winter, pay attention to your lighting. Could a quick update make it bright where necessary, cosy where wanted and as fashionforward as anyone could desire?

BRIGHTEN UP YOUR LIGHTNING • Using just one central pendant to illuminate a room creates a flat light with dark corners, making the space seem dull and small. If you are renovating, now’s the time to add wall lights, install some additional ceiling lights, or include some track lighting in cornices or bookcases. • To improve a boring lighting scheme quickly and easily, add extra lights at different heights – a table lamp in the corner, a floor lamp in other, maybe a clip light attached to a shelf. The aim is to create layers of light that come from different directions, and that you can adjust to suit your mood or the way you’re using the room. • Think about bulbs – save money by changing to LEDs, which last for years and are very cheap to run. How ‘warm’ or ‘cool’ they are is marked in kelvins - look for around 2,700K for a pleasant indoor light. Dimmer switches give flexibility to your lighting, but they’re not always compatible with LEDs, so check with your electrician. • ‘Smart’ lighting is the way to go – use a remote control or an app on your phone to dim your lights, switch them on and off or even change their colours.

Page 12

This smoky glass and brass table lamp would make a great update for a modern or retro-style living room. Boho smoke grey and brass table lamp, £180, Alexander & Pearl. Changing a pendant light can create a fabulous focal point in a room. The eight baubles on this contemporary chandelier cascade pretty, ambient light. Bubble chandelier, £79.99, Dowsing and Reynolds. This wonderfully sleek pendant light features a built-in, dimmable LED panel so you can adjust the light level to suit your mood. Shown here in Petrol, it is also available in Pearl, Forest, Anthracite, Ruby and Saffron. Asteria pendant, £179, Black By Design. Great for a party – or even every day – plug in a colourful, neon lamp and illuminate your space with style. Lumosnap neon lights, £22-£50, Gingersnap.

Smart lighting systems are easy to use and surprisingly affordable. Tradfri dimming kit, from £15, PS 2017 Table Lamp, £25; both Ikea. Illuminate a corner of your living room – and provide a snugly spot for curling up with a good book – by swapping a tired old floor lamp for a good-looking, on-trend new one. Slam Dunk floor lamp in antique brass, £175, Loaf.

GLOUCESTER ROTARY CLUB SANTA FUN RUN 2017 The first ever Gloucester Rotary Club Santa Fun Run, which took place last month, was blessed with glorious sunshine and a joyous atmosphere! Well done to Rotary President Sue Smith and the whole team for a brilliant effort working for and with the community. The event was lovingly organised; special touches included a string quartet playing Christmas carols beside the Rotary Tree of Light and the local police enjoying a photograph with Mayor Steve Morgan and Sue Smith. There were medals for all and it was great to see people of all ages, along with their gorgeous 4-legged friends, participating in what is hoped will become an annual event. Steve Morgan, Mayor of Gloucester, said he was pleased to support the Rotary Club in their work and was very proud of the way in which the city had embraced the Santa Fun Run, which raises money for local charities. All pictures on this page were taken and kindly supplied by Jan Long (Tel. 01531 650036).

Gardener’s Resolve… by Pippa Greenwood

Happy New Year! Now that 2018 is here, what are your garden resolutions for the year ahead? Here are my suggestions… Re-cYcle pots Save all the pots and trays you get when buying plants and rinse them out to use next time you need one. Store the pots away from sunlight to prevent the plastic disintegrating. coveR it up! Make a resolution to dry off and cover up garden furniture once the summer is over, to protect it from rain, cold, ice or even fungi! Buy furniture covers or, better still, store the furniture in a shed or garage if you have one. Stored properly, it will last much longer. GRow YouR owN Aim to grow more of your own fresh fruit, vegetables and herbs. This could be buying a couple of tomato plants for the first time, or creating a small herb planter, or it could be larger scale and more complex plans if you’re already big on grow-your-own. Don’t forget that there’s a great choice of UK-grown vegetable plants plus my weekly advice and tips emails at www. pippagreenwood.com/growyour-own. Page 16

compost moRe Once you get in the swing of it, composting becomes second nature. Make sure you include kitchen waste such as vegetable peelings, apple cores. The amount of extra compost you’ll generate will be well worthwhile. Many local councils offer a good deal on basic plastic composters. use tHat space! If you have a cold frame, porch, conservatory or greenhouse, put it to use! Any sort of protected growing area has the ability to increase what you can grow and when you can grow it. So raise your own summer flowers in it, force some bulbs in it in the winter or make off-season sowings of salad crops…make it work, but whatever you do, don’t use it as the family rubbish dump! mulcH moRe Make use of any organic matter that is bulky – mulch with it. Whether it is well-rotted manure, garden compost, the used compost from a seasonal bedding display or growing bag, or leaf mould, make it into mulch! Applied a couple of inches or more deep over the soil surface, a mulch like this will improve the soil’s ability to conserve moisture (so saving you both watering time and

water) and may also help to keep weeds at bay. A win-win situation. pause befoRe You buY When you’re looking through the seed, plant and bulb catalogues, browsing online or wandering around a garden centre, pause before you buy. I know I’m not alone in having eyes that are much bigger than my plot! It is very easy to order more seeds than you’ll ever be able to sow and plants that you’ll never be able to squeeze into your garden. seasoNal saveR Make sure you recycle your Christmas tree. Real trees can be recycled at locations up and down the country – many garden centres and councils offer the service. The trees will be shredded and added to other green materials to make a great soil conditioner and planting mix. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com and you’ll find some great gardening things: ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ (where you receive your chosen garden-ready vegetable plants in the spring accompanied by weekly advice and tips from Pippa) plus gardening tools, raised bed kits, Grower Frames, signed books and more!

Town Centre Talking Great bargains to be had when the best of Cheltenham’s independent shops get together under one special roof

Everybody likes a bargain, whatever the time of year – and Cheltenham Business Improvement District (BID) has some special savings coming your way. Retail firms like Pure and Weird Fish often put on sales events where some of their best products are offered for sale at ridiculously low prices. Imagine a sale where, not one, but up to a dozen businesses are in one place with the goods available for up to 75 percent off the normal price. And what if those businesses were among the top independent businesses in Cheltenham?

jewellery, shoes and travel goods. Just look at the businesses already confirmed to be taking part (in alphabetical order): Beards, Boutique 3, Enekes, James of Montpellier, Keith Scarrott Shoes, Love It and Sandra Dee. The Cheltenham Independents Sale will be held in the spectacular surroundings of Princess Hall at Cheltenham Ladies College from 11am to 4pm on 28th January. For those of you who haven’t been lucky enough to visit the Ladies College in the past, it will be a real treat.

That is just what is happening at the Cheltenham Independents Sale being organised by the BID on Sunday 28th January.

Princess Hall is a beautiful building in dramatic Gothic style with pitch pine woodwork and galleries running around the rear and on both sides.

Among the goods you’ll be able to buy are the best fashion items,

The building will be transformed into a salesroom with our independent businesses offering many of their prime products at prices that are unlikely to be seen again.

One of the businesses that is returning because of what it achieved last year is independent jewellers’ Beards. Jason Cheshire, of Beards, said: "A lot of people came to see us who wouldn't come into the shop. It was a great way of getting our name and brands out there." "We also had a positive response from being with other businesses, picking up extra trade that we wouldn't normally have had. We always wanted to be involved again." The independent businesses are not able to run one-off sale events in the way that the nationals like Pure and Weird Fish do. But by bringing them together, it gives them a great opportunity at a time of year when trade is normally slow. My message to Cheltenham residents is that you can benefit even more than our businesses. You genuinely won’t believe some of the bargains that are on offer. See you on the 28th!

- by Kevan Blackadder, The BID ran a similar event called Cheltenham BID Director the Boutique Sale at Cheltenham Town Hall last January, which attracted more Shoppers at last year's event than 500 shoppers. That event was entirely fashion-based but we have deliberately broadened the approach this year for the benefit of both the BID businesses and their customers. Space Saving Cloud Storage Many modern Macs and PCs come with solid state drives, which are quick but expensive, so computer firms tend to use ones with fairly small capacities. So a PC with a 1TB (1,000 gigabyte) hard disk might be a similar price to one with a solid state drive of 128GB or 256GB. If you’re short of space, options include cheap USBconnected external drives, or online storage. Free services such as Apple’s iCloud or Microsoft’s OneDrive give you 5GB of free storage and even large storage capacities aren’t too pricey: Apple’s iCloud offers 2TB of online storage for £6.99 per month - and like other cloud services, that storage can be shared among all your devices, so you can use it to share things between home and office or between your PC, phone and tablet.

Choosing the Best Mobile Phone Plans in 2018 significant number of calls. You can choose between a rolling one-month deal and a fixed 12month contract.

Choosing the right mobile phone plan can be quite daunting, especially if you don’t understand how they work. Perhaps you have always bought a contract with a phone included, but you might find that choosing a SIM-only contract is better thanks to its flexibility. With so many different plans available these days, here’s an idea of what to look out for. Mobile phone plans explained There are essentially three types of mobile phone deal: pay monthly contract Pay monthly contracts are the most cost-effective if your phone bills are high or you want a top-of-the-range handset. Contracts generally last for 12 or 24 months and you pay a fixed minimum monthly amount by direct debit. This is for your inclusive calls, texts and data allowance. Pay monthly contracts incorporate a free or subsidised handset. siM-only deal When you already own a phone and don’t want to change it, or are happy to buy your own new handset, a SIM-only deal can offer flexibility and cost-savings if you make a Page 22

pay-as-you-go (paYG) If you don’t use your mobile phone very much, pay-as-yougo helps to avoid spending money when you do not really need to. You simply top up your phone using a credit card or top-up card when you run out of minutes, texts or data, and you don’t need to be creditchecked as you do when you take out a contract. data rollover If you don’t use your full data allowance each month, you can buy a plan that lets you rollover what is left, and use it the following month. So which networks offer this facility? At the time of writing, iD Mobile, O2, Virgin Media, Vodafone, Freedompop and Sky Mobile all offer plans with data rollover. It isn’t a new concept, but until recently providers have only allowed you to rollover your data from the previous month. Now, however, Sky Mobile has come up with a very useful online ‘piggybank’ facility that lets you store your unused data at no additional cost for up to three years. You’ll need to have a minimum of 1GB saved in the piggybank before it can be accessed, and Sky let you roll back data in 1GB volumes. Flexible siM-onlY deals Giffgaff Giffgaff’s ‘goodybags’ offer flexibility and choice if you are

looking for a SIM-only deal. A goodybag is basically your allowance of minutes, texts and data, and it lasts for one month. This means you can change your goodybag if it doesn’t offer quite enough minutes, for example, or you need more data that month. three’s ‘Go binge’ The Three network offers a useful ‘Go Binge’ facility with some of their mobile phone deals. This allows you to stream music and films from Netflix, Deezer, SoundCloud and TVPlayer without using up your monthly allowance, as long as you have some of your data allowance left. (If adverts are shown on these apps, they may use up your allowance, however.) pay-as-you-go (paYG) If you’re not a heavy mobile phone user, or are worried about being credit-checked, a pay-as-you-go deal may be the best choice. You can opt for ‘traditional’ PAYG or a bundle of data, minutes and texts. As you can see, there’s a wealth of choice when looking for mobile phone deals – it just takes a little time to compare them and decide on the best option. www.uswitch.com/mobiles/guides/ what-is-data-rollover-and-whichnetworks-offer-it/ www.sky.com/shop/mobile/ features#feature-roll www.sky.com/help/articles/yoursky-piggybank www.three.co.uk/go-binge/details

Sleep: Vital for Good Mental and Physical Health

We know that losing sleep can make us struggle to concentrate and keep smiling. But research is increasingly proving that a lack of good quality sleep can seriously damage our physical and mental health. More than 20 large-scale studies have proved that the shorter your sleep, the shorter your life. How sleep deprivation affects pHysical HealtH weight gain and obesity The link is probably due to reduced levels of leptin (the hunger-inhibiting ‘you’re full’ hormone) and increased levels of ghrelin (the hungerstimulating hormone) caused by sleep deprivation. It’s a vicious circle, as you’re more prone to sleep problems if you’re overweight. increased diabetes risk Risk is increased in people sleeping less than five hours a night, particularly those lacking deep or ‘slow-wave’ sleep. Their body processes glucose differently, reacting incorrectly to insulin. Tiredness also causes you to secrete more stress hormones (e.g. cortisol), making it harder for insulin to function correctly and leaving excess glucose in your bloodstream. increased cancer risk Professor Matthew Walker, Page 26

author of Why We Sleep, says that after just one night of only four or five hours’ sleep, your natural cancer-attacking cells drop by 70%. US researchers have discovered that night workers produce 80% less of a by-product of DNA tissue repair, indicating their bodies aren’t carrying out their natural overnight cell restoration. increased alzheimer’s risk During deep sleep, amyloid deposits (a cell-killing toxin that accumulates in the brains of Alzheimer’s sufferers) are ‘cleaned’ away. Without sufficient sleep, these plaques build up, especially in deepsleep-generating regions – meaning you sleep even less. It’s a vicious circle. increased risk of heart disease, heart attack and stroke Persistent sleep deprivation causes increased heart rate, blood pressure and inflammation, which can all put extra strain on your heart. Over45s sleeping less than six hours a night are 200% more likely to have a heart attack or stroke. weakened immunity Sleep deprivation damages production and distribution of immune factors. reduced fertility and libido Research has revealed that insufficient sleep can cause lower libido in men and women, and reduce the secretion of reproductive hormones. How sleep deprivation affects mental HealtH increased risk of depression, anxiety, paranoia,

hallucinations and psychotic episodes The poor mental health/poor sleep link is well-established. Daniel Freeman, co-author of major research on the subject, found that insomnia doubles your chances of developing depression, while treating insomnia reduces it. His study also showed that when people sleep better, they’re far less likely to suffer from anxiety, paranoia, hallucinations or psychotic episodes. reduced memory, concentration and reaction times The odd late night isn’t a problem, but after persistently poor sleep, your reaction times, concentration and decisionmaking decline significantly. This can affect not only your health and safety, but that of others you work with, care for – or drive past. Studies show that sleep deficiency harms your driving ability as much as, or more than, being drunk. Four hours’ sleep? You’re 11.5 times more likely to be involved in a crash. Driver fatigue is estimated to be responsible for around 100,000 car accidents and 1,500 deaths each year. a cHange of attitude “No aspect of our biology is left unscathed by sleep deprivation,” says Professor Walker. He believes we have “stigmatised sleep with the label of laziness” because we want to seem busy; a lack of sleep is “a badge of honour.” That’s an attitude we need to change.

Lions Club of Cheltenham January Update November and December have been very active months for the Lions Club. At the beginning of November, several Club members travelled to BurnhamOn-Sea to help the local Lions Club collect money during the Carnival. The Burnham-On-Sea Lions Club supports the Cheltenham Club with their Holiday Caravan which is offered to Gloucestershire residents with a disability, who would otherwise not have a holiday. December started with the Club making their usual donation to the Homeless Project. This time, at the request of the organisers, it was in the form of tombola equipment and prizes. Also at the beginning of last month, Club President Dave Storey drove to Salisbury to deliver an Autoclave Steriliser to Dentaid, who will service it before forwarding it to a hospital in Africa. The equipment was very heavy (it took two people to lift it!) and is used to sterilize medical equipment and supplies.

On three days in December, Club members also collected money in the High Street. The Club would like to thank everyone for their generous support and assure them that all money collected will be used for the benefit of local people. Finally, the Club also donated £500 to UNICEF in December to cover the cost of 100 thermal blankets for Syrian refugee children as part of the Lions UK Appeal. In the past year, the Club has made many donations. Recipients and causes included; • Two beds/chairs for the Oncology Unit • Furnishing Visitors' Room at Sue Ryder • Freewheelers Motorcycle Emergency Team • Milestones Special School • Breast Cancer • Glos Special Olympics • Tandemonium • Open Door • Donations for other local causes • Rape Victims • Holiday Caravan

Cheltenham Calendar Happy New Year! It’s a fresh start, but when you think about it, January is the worst time to turn over a new leaf. The hangover is lingering, the piggy banks have been ransacked and the Christmas spirit has fizzled. You end up forcing yourself into new gym gear that is too tight after one too many Christmas puddings and squash yourself into a busy gym with hundreds of other “New Year, New Me” people. Instead, I propose, we postpone this new year self-improvement madness until your headache has died down, the next pay cheque has come in and you had time to take down the tinsel. So sit back, have a turkey and cranberry sandwich and relax after the manic month that is December. Perhaps try out a month free from the devil’s potion, also known as Drynuary – it's an excellent way to detox after a month of knees-up and helps you get back to the daily grind. Head over to chelt-fit.co.uk/tag/alcohol to find out more. Now, if this all doesn’t appeal to you, you can start the new year in style by

heading to the Racecourse on New Year’s Day to continue the frivolity and drinking whilst accompanying it with a cheeky bet and a hot toddy to keep you warm. Head down for 10.30am to beat the crowds and get a bet on for the first race at 12.15pm. The last race will take place at 3.40pm so there is plenty of time for a few more pints in the pub afterwards. One of my all-time favourite shows is back welcoming you into 2018. This is high praise as I have seen my fair share of shows! 'The Play That Goes Wrong' returns to Cheltenham's Everyman Theatre on the 16th of January to perform eight shows that will have you bent double with laughter. Watch through crying-with-laughter eyes as everything that can go wrong does! I honestly believe this production, as seen on the Royal Variety Performance,

Donations to the Lions Club International Appeals in 2017 included; • British Virgin Islands (Street collection) £1,411 • East Africa Famine Relief (Street Collection) £864 • UNICEF - Thermal blankets for Syrian refugee children £500 • The Beat Measles Appeal £100 On the social side of things, members and partners recently enjoyed a dinner at the Cheltenham Hilton Hotel. In 2018, the Club looks forward to a trip to the Houses of Parliament at the invitation of MP Alex Chalk. Cheltenham Lions Club would like to wish all their friends and supporters a happy and healthy 2018! The Cheltenham Lions Club meets at the Victory Club on the second and fourth Monday of every month. For more information, contact Peter Weir on 07973 807159 or Club President David Storey on 01242 235606. - by David Green, Club PRO

by Olivia Scull is perfect for anyone of any age and theatre style preference as it never fails to make you uncontrollably howl with laughter. The Westend sell-out show is an Ant and Dec favourite and most certainly mine. You’ve also still got a chance to catch your local pantomime before it’s too late, and there is plenty to choose from… Dick Whittington will be showing at the Everyman Theatre until the 7th while The Bacon Theatre will perform Aladdin from the 18th until the 21st. There is also a whole host of shows to enjoy just a stone’s throw away from Cheltenham with productions of Robin Hood, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Peter Pan in Tewkesbury and Gloucester. Wishing you all the best for 2018 and see you back here in February!

History Welcoming in the Old New Year observed. According to this calendar, New Year’s Day falls in the middle of January, after the end of the Advent fast.

As we bring in 2018 with toasts, fireworks and a rousing rendition of Auld Lang Syne, it’s perhaps worth remembering that New Year has been a bit of a moveable feast It is not written in stone that New Year be celebrated on 1st January. With the well-known and colourful carnival that takes place in London, most of us are aware that the Chinese New Year is celebrated after our own. But did you know that some people in Europe also mark the start of a new year a little later than we do? Today, in common with the rest of Europe and most of the world, we use the Gregorian calendar originally set up by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582. Europe universally adopted this calendar in the 18th century, although Russia didn’t change over to it until 1918, after the Bolshevik Revolution. Previously, the older Julian calendar, introduced by Julius Caesar in 46BC, had been Page 34

The Russian Orthodox Church continues to abide by the Julian calendar and although not recognised as a national holiday, the ‘Old New Year’ is still honoured by Orthodox Christians in central and eastern Europe on 13th and 14th January. 14th January is also St Basil’s Day, and is celebrated with feasting, songs, bonfires and fireworks. In Macedonia it is customary to eat unleavened (pita) bread with a coin inside (or dumplings with a hidden charm in Russia). Much like our Christmas pudding tradition, whoever finds the coin will have good luck for the New Year. The customary feast includes a wide range of pork dishes to herald a good farming year, the traditional St Basil celebratory dinner being a whole roasted pig. Another St Basil’s day morning tradition has been to eat ceremonial porridge that has been cooked overnight by the oldest woman in the house. The condition of the porridge in the morning would signify the household’s fortunes in the

By Catherine Rose coming year. Observing New Year in the middle of January is not uncommon. Berber tribes in North Africa (Morocco and Libya) mark New Year according to the Berber calendar, which roughly coincides with the Julian one. India also celebrates at this time in a festival known as Makar Sankranti. And parts of Switzerland see in New Year under the umbrella of St Sylvester’s Day. Similarly, the old Gaelic custom was to welcome New Year on 12th January and although Hogmanay is world famous, parts of Scotland still celebrate the Old New Year, known as Oidhche Chullaig or Oidhche Challainn. Children would traditionally visit each home in their village reciting a Gaelic New Year blessing while carrying a caisein-uchd – a torch made from the breast bone of a sheep dipped in tallow. In Burghead in the Moray Firth, residents see in the Old New Year with the ‘burning of the clavie’ – a torch made of barrel staves, which is lit on the evening of 11th January. January can often be a cold and dispiriting month following our Christmas and New Year festivities, so perhaps celebrating the ‘Old New Year’ in the middle of it isn’t such a bad idea after all.
