AN OFFER NOT TO BE SNEEZED AT I am welcoming the arrival of July this year, not just because it’s a lovely summer month, but because it should only be a couple of weeks before the grass pollen hay fever season starts to die down. It’s typically at its worst from mid-May, although some people are allergic to other pollens, not just grass, so have prolonged symptoms. This year has been awful though and even people who really don’t suffer as such have reported bouts of sneezing. I am not taking a holiday until the end of August this year, so my summer will be days out in our beautiful countryside, albeit with tablets and tissues packed in my bag. I am particularly looking forward to a day out with my godchildren at the end of this month. We are going to take them to Cotswold Farm Park for the day. Their Maize Maze,
which opens on the 21st, just sounds like so much fun – the kids are going to love it and I am sure so will the adults! I also can't wait to see all the cute animals! There have been lots of "awwww" sounds coming from the Glos Directories team when I clicked my way through a selection of animal pictures provided by the Farm Park while choosing this month's front cover image. Now, if pictures already evoke such a reaction, how great is seeing the real thing going to be! And who am I to have all the fun by myself? Why not take part in our competition for a chance to win a family ticket to the Cotswold Farm Park? It couldn't be easier! See page 9 to find out more.

Short Story
Dolphin Watching By Jackie Brewster “It’s a tricky walk down.” Sheila grabbed a clump of seagrass to steady herself. “I feel like a mountain goat.” She had picked up a leaflet for a dolphin-watching boat trip that set off from the harbour, but Royce had turned his nose up. “If we sit on a beach that boat will sail past,” he’d said, parking on the coastal road’s narrow verge. “Whatever they see on the boat, we can see from the shore.” “You’re such a cheap-skate, Royce,” Sheila had snapped crossly. “We’re on holiday for goodness sake!” “I’m not being cheap,” Royce had replied sulkily. “I just thought you’d enjoy it more on a beach.” “I’m sorry.” Sheila backed down when she saw she’d offended him. “It’s a lovely idea.” “Quite right,” Royce had shrugged, “I’m just trying to give you a nice holiday.” With the air not completely cleared between them, Sheila had avoided the slightest complaint while stumbling behind Royce down the two miles of nettle-lined track to the beach. She never said a word when she got a splinter in her bottom from a six-bar 6
gate, and cheerfully skidded on loose shale down the sheer cliff face. After an hour of scraped knees and nettle stings, they finally stood on the shoreline. The waves shimmered in the hot sun, and the sand of the little cove was the colour of clotted cream. It was also covered in beach towels. “I’m amazed it’s so popular,” Sheila observed. “It’s so dicey to get to.” “Everyone’s had the same idea,” said Royce. “No point wasting money on pointless boat trips.” They found a rock to perch upon, where they could see the sea over rows of colourful windbreaks. “I can’t believe all these families have made it down here,” Sheila marvelled, “and there are no facilities for miles.” “Yes, it’s very secluded,” Royce said. “Look, they’ve got a double buggy down here.” Sheila was staggered. “And those teenagers have brought body boards.” “Incredible,” Royce agreed, peering through his binoculars. Sheila looked around. There were families building sandcastles, some
eating ice lollies, some leaning over rock pools with crab lines. “Where’s everyone getting their lollies from?” “Must have brought them with them,” Royce said, feigning interest in a seagull. A girl walked by licking a cornet. “Excuse me!” Sheila called, “Where did you get that from?” “The ice cream van in the car park,” the girl said.
“Why did we park miles away, Royce?” Sheila turned to her husband. “There’s a car park.” “Look, here comes the dolphin-spotting boat,” Royce said, pretending not to hear. “How much does the car park cost?” Sheila asked. “It’s quite dear,” Royce said. “How much?” Sheila insisted. “Three pounds,” Royce mumbled.
“What car park?” The girl looked at Sheila as though she’d landed from Mars. “Up there,” she pointed, “it’s a two-minute walk.”
LANDSCAPING DRIVEWAYS PATIOS
“Well, you know what you can do?” Sheila said. “You can go back up the cliff and bring the car round.” She took the binoculars out of his hand. “And then get me an ice-cream. I’ll let you know if I see any dolphins.”

Family Day Out
SUMMER AT COTSWOLD FARM PARK Cotswold Farm Park is a great way to spend a sunny day this summer, with lots of outdoor activities to entertain people of all ages. The Maize Maze will be returning to the Cotswold Farm Park and will be open from the 21st July to the 2nd of September. This year, the theme of the maze is ‘Wonderland’. The Mad Hatter will be up to his usual tricks and there will be a delightful tea party in the centre of the maze. The usual Farm Park fun will be happening indoors, visitors can enjoy the different seasonal demonstrations; watch a cow get milked in the Milking demonstration and learn about sheep through the ages with the Sheep show.
There is also plenty of chances to get close to the animals, including bottle feeding of lambs and goats and cuddling cute chicks and fluffy bunnies. Take a stroll through the Rare Breeds Through History walk where the animals can be hand fed - the greedy goats will be your best friend if you have a bag of animal food in your hand! The Farm Park is open daily from 10.30am to 17.00pm and all activities including the Maize Maze is included within the standard cost of admission. MAYOR HELPS CELEBRATE 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF LOCAL TALKING NEWSPAPER
are still in touch with local news and articles. Keep up the good work! Congratulations to you all and thank you.” The Mayor spoke of his personal connection with the aims of the Cotswold Listener. As a boy, one of his regular tasks was to read the local newspaper out loud to his paternal grandfather who was blind. The charity is run entirely by volunteers, with roles ranging from recording technicians to news readers and administration to volunteer liaison. The Cotswold Listener is always delighted to enrol new volunteers and listeners to this free service and to supply special memory stick players to those who need them.

Mayor Bernard Fisher with Chairman John Webb
The Cotswold Listener talking newspaper celebrated its 40th anniversary on 12th June in the company of the Mayor of Cheltenham, Councillor Bernard Fisher, and nearly 50 volunteers and listeners. In addition to the formal business of the charity’s AGM, the Mayor cut an anniversary cake and gave a short speech before everyone enjoyed an afternoon tea and entertainment from the Cheltenham Ukulele Group. The charity was founded in 1978 by Eric Walker and since then has recorded and distributed local news on CD or memory stick to sight-impaired people in Cheltenham, Tewkesbury and the North Cotswolds every week – all free of charge. The service is much appreciated: Chairman John Webb read out a letter from a listener, which said: “It means so much to feel we 14

Cheltenham Lions Club By David Green, Club PRO On Saturday 26th May the Club held its Spring Plant Sale at the Exmouth Arms. The weather was kind and resulted in a record sale. Proceeds will go to the Club's local charities. Thanks to the management for letting us use the grounds, thanks to our friendly nurseryman for supplying excellent plants and a big thank you to all our customers. Between 9th and 12th June the Club welcomed fellow Lions from their twin club in Molndal, Sweden. Entertainment included a trip to Bath and, much to their delight, a trip to Hook Norton Brewery. The day was rounded off with a supper at the Victory Club. The exchange has now been happening for twenty years.
Cotswolds Prostate Cancer Support Group held a PSA event at Tewkesbury Comprehensive School on Wednesday 30th May. Club members assisted with administration, car parking, etc. Over 450 tests were completed. On Friday 15th June members continued their association with FOCUS, the fundraising section for the Oncology Unit, with a collection at the ASDA Supermarket in Hatherley.

SIMPLE PLEASURES A CENTURY AGO
Well-dressed children lead a party down Station Road to Eversfield Pleasure Grounds
In my previous two articles, I outlined the history of the former Great Western Railway main line which is now the route of the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway. When the line opened in 1906 it breathed life into a remarkable institution in Bishop's Cleeve - the Eversfield Tea and Pleasure Grounds, conveniently situated a short distance down Station Road. I doubt that today many people still possess a piece of souvenir crockery inscribed 'A Present from Bishop's Cleeve'. There might be a scratching of heads regarding its origin as the village does not spring readily to mind as a tourist destination! Yet in the years between the two world wars, it was very much a place to visit. The Eversfield Tea and Pleasure Grounds began as the brainchild of Andrew Denley from Foxcote near Andoversford, who in 1898 bought a bakery with extensive orchard grounds bordering on what became Station Road. Ever an entrepreneur, Andrew purchased some secondhand seesaws and swings from a playground in Charlton Kings, which he installed in the orchard, where 18
he also converted an existing Dutch barn into a tea room, to create a tourist attraction. Andrew particularly wanted to attract groups, especially church groups, rather than individuals; Cheltenham Parish Church Sunday School and Bible Class members, Charlton Kings' Parish Church Guilds, and Hatherley and Reddings Band of Hope and Temperance Society were just three of the groups which visited in the early days. The First World War dampened demand and so it was in the inter-war period that the Pleasure Grounds
really flourished. In his history of his family’s venture, on which much of this article is based, David Denley drew a map (see left) showing the extensive area from where the groups came. At first, it was always by train, with the recommendation that parties of over 200 charter their own, but increasingly visitors came by charabanc and this created real parking problems along Station Road. The war having ended, 1919 marked a re-launching of the Pleasure Grounds. We can learn from the publicity brochure that Eversfield 'should in no way be thought similar to the ordinary “pleasure garden”.' However, nearly a century later we might wonder how the visitors gained so much enjoyment from the rather primitive amusements on offer. These included a large shute for adults and a small shute for children (regularly rubbed with paraffin wax to avoid too many splinters); a circular railway 30 feet in diameter on which two trucks were pushed around by the visitors themselves; a sloping railway 25 feet long with a truck which had to be similarly pushed back to the top; a miniature big wheel which could accommodate eight adults or children;
a simple zip wire; a small roundabout, swings and a sea swing. This latter was a suspended square wooden crate which could be pushed in all directions, thus creating the impression of a rough sea, often leading to similar consequences! Once visitors had tired themselves out on the amusements, or in playing tennis or enjoying games and races in other parts of the grounds, they could sit down to eat 'a good plain tea' provided for parties at the special price of 9d (4p) per head, with white, brown and currant bread and unlimited cakes. Cheaper teas could be provided at 6d (2 1/2p) per head and better class teas 'at moderate prices'. The cost of the tea included admission, otherwise it cost 3d (1p). The Dutch barn soon became inadequate and so two tents were purchased where 600 people could sit down for their refreshments. How Eldersfield Tea and Pleasure Grounds developed over the next twenty years will be the subject of my next article.
- David Aldred The below postcard gives a good indication of the simple nature of the attractions

Town Centre Talking Kevan Blackadder, Cheltenham BID Director
It’s time to go shopping – for a new job in retail Hardly a day passes without yet another national retailer announcing that it is facing a financial crisis.
With that in mind, Cheltenham BID is holding a retail recruitment fair to promote the wide range of opportunities that exist. It might be just the time to make the move to retail. If you’re interested, pop along to our event, which is being held in the Municipal Offices from 11am to 2pm on Thursday July 5.
But I love the story of one bright, unemployed Cheltenham youngster who had never thought retail was for her but is now thriving in a full-time job. The shop was searching for someone who could manage her shop’s social media campaigns alongside a sales role. She applied and neither have looked back since. Working in retail in 2018 isn’t just about standing behind a counter. It’s about bringing skills of all kinds to the modern shop environment. Yes, more people shop online but that means that customer service in-store is more important than ever. And for someone starting out on a career, that first job could just be a stepping stone. Many managers in the larger stores across town started on the shop floor. In Cheltenham, John Lewis are currently recruiting more than 250 full-and-parttime staff for their new store in the High Street, which opens in October. There will be no lack of interest in the jobs – the John Lewis Partnership has an excellent reputation as an employer – and that could lead to increased opportunities elsewhere in the town as current retail staff look to move to the new store. 20

Chalk Talk I’ve tried to understand the Boot’s Corner closure scheme. Really I have. I’ve held the plans up to the light. I’ve tried squinting at them. But the arguments don’t make sense. On air quality - I’m the first person to back improvements. I recently took Megabus to task for not switching off their engines when waiting. There are five hot-spots in Cheltenham which breach the EU’s nitrogen dioxide standards, including the High Street/Bath Road and London Road/ Hewlett Road junctions. The problem is that Boot’s Corner isn’t one of them. The worst areas are being ignored. And now up to 20,000 cars, vans and trucks are going to be forced into back street rat-runs each day, massively increasing pollution and congestion. On cycling - I go everywhere in Cheltenham on my bike. People regularly tell me that he main thing putting them off cycling is the risk from other vehicles. Yet buses and taxis are still going to be able to use Boot’s Corner. As for the suggestion that this will help shoppers, how exactly? Buses and taxis will still use the road. The crossing will still need to be in place. Surely the priority should be to cancel the 45% parking hikes which make Cheltenham the most expensive place to park in Gloucestershire? Apart from the disruption, the cost is enormous. Millions is being taken from the Highways budget. Cheltenham’s local Civic Pride reserve has been raided.

LOCAL MARKETS FARMERS’ MARKET 2nd & last Fri/month, 9am - 2pm, Pedestrianised area outside Cavendish House, Cheltenham
Councillors Corner By Cllr Klara Sudbury, Charlton Park and College I have passed the Mayor’s chain to my successor and am settling back into the role of ward councillor with lots of ward casework to attend to! Thanks to the support of many incredible people, businesses and organisations my Mayor’s Charity Appeal raised over £49,000 - a record-breaking sum that will be divided equally between the Hollie Gazzard Trust and the Hospitals Charity’s Focus Fund. The planning application for 9 residential units at 252 Bath Road (Bath Road Market) has been refused. I spoke against the application at planning committee, saying that it was an overdevelopment that would harm the character and appearance of the area and harm the amenity of nearby residents. Permission has been given for a Cheese and Chilli Festival in Sandford Park on 4th and 5th August, 10am-5pm. I have raised concerns with the council about the sale
of alcohol and about the need to ensure the site can be quickly cleared in the event of flooding. If there are any issues that arise from the event please let me know. As County Councillor I have £30,000 to invest in projects that benefit the local community. If you are a community or volunteer group or a local charity that would like to undertake a project in Charlton Park and College Division, please contact me. For more information please visit the County Council’s website: https://www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/ business-property-and-economy/ finance-funding-and-grants/growingour-communities-fund/ Page 27
A NEW FAMILY OF BEES MOVES INTO GLOUCESTER SERVICES
Gloucester Services are now the proud keepers of a rescue beehive, with the help of local charity Fair Shares. Due to a combination of environmental factors, the UK’s bee population has seen a dramatic decline in the past 20 years. Since the 1930’s, there have been changes to agricultural techniques causing an estimated loss of 95% of the UK’s wildflower meadows. However, bees are essential to the UK’s economy, pollinating many commercial crops.
discovered by a lady from Hucclecote, a community just a few miles away. She initially thought she had a wasps' nest outside her front door and contacted the Council for advice.
To try and tackle this issue, Gloucester Services are doing their bit for the bee population. This project is just one of many aimed at improving the bio-diversity of the services.
Gloucestershire County Council soon identified the nest as bees and contacted the Gloucester-based charity Fair Shares, which has been a vital part of the safe installation and care of the beehive at Gloucester Services.
Gloucester Services installed their first beehive in 2014 before the services opened. They knew how important it is to keep the bee population thriving. To further aid the bee population, the service station's roof has been designed especially to blend in with the natural surroundings and seeded with a wildflower and grass mix, creating a wildflower meadow perfect for the bee population to flourish in. Gloucester Services' new beehive was 28
Reyaz Limalia from Fair Shares says: “With a box full of bees we rushed to Gloucester Services to rehouse them in a spare hive that we had set up in preparation of just such an event. We successfully transferred the bees into their new home and it’s just a waiting game now to see if they settle in and stay! The lady was really pleased we could take away the bees and that they would get a nice new home.”
