BARN DANCING… BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT As the warmer weather has finally arrived* we all come out of hibernation and start searching – a bit too late really – for what we are going to do in the summer. Exercise in the fresh air feels like a pleasure rather than a chore. I’m a walker rather than a cycler, but I came across an interesting snippet recently regarding an exhibition that took place in Paris 200 years ago of the predecessor to the modern-day bicycle (see page 19). What an ‘industry’ cycling is these days. It has to be one of the most inclusive sports out there with everyone from kids to grandparents and beginners to athletes being able to take part. Mind you, here in the Cotswolds, it’s a challenge to go
any sort of distance without facing a hill. How about dancing on a farm instead? I know that sounds strange but the fabulous Barn on the Farm festival takes place at Over in early July, so it won’t just be you and a cow! Our front cover is of headliner Tom Misch – his R’n’B and jazz-influenced music is right on trend at the moment. Read festival founder Joshua Sanger’s inspirational story on page 13. Finally, our events listings on pages 25-27 should enable you to find something to do even at short notice.

Town Centre Talking Kevan Blackadder, Cheltenham BID Director
Let’s give Boots Corner closure a go – it might even work It’s been talked about for years and finally, at some point towards the end of June, Boots Corner will close to most through traffic.
the town centre from the South and use the Regent Arcade car park and others and, from the North, head to Town Centre East. Park and Ride is also a more sensible option for many. If the trial isn’t a success and the town grinds to a halt, then the current system can be reintroduced. But let’s see what happens – and hope it will create a better town for all.
All vehicles apart from buses and taxis will be banned from using the through road at Clarence Street during an 18-month trial. But already a Facebook group called 'Cheltenham Residents Against Boots Corner Closure' has attracted hundreds of supporters. Some residents in streets from St Paul’s Road to College Road are also opposed, saying they will become rat runs.
Everybody who has used the busy crossing will have experienced a near-miss. Motorists and pedestrians regularly gamble as the lights change. It is also a physical barrier to a joined-up High Street. Millions have been invested in The Brewery Quarter but the heavy traffic flows at this junction mean many visitors don’t head beyond Boots Corner. Most businesses believe that by taking the traffic out of this junction, a far more pleasant shopping experience will be created. Motorists will still be able to come into 6

Councillors Corner By Cllr Paul McCloskey, Charlton Kings After the elections at the beginning of May, the new council was fully operational within a fortnight. The final formal event of the last council took place three days after the elections on Sunday 6th May when a Civic Service took place at Cheltenham Minster to thank the outgoing mayor Cllr Klara Sudbury for her year as mayor. It was the last opportunity for Klara to wear the robes and my wife Helena and I took the opportunity for a final photo with Klara. Helena retired this year, as did a number of other councillors, not least Cllr Pat Thornton who stood down after an amazing 32 years on the council. The first meeting of the new council was held on Monday 14th May and the council elected Cllr Bernie Fisher as the new mayor. Membership of all the committees was also decided. The last stage in the handover was
‘Mayor Making’ which took place at the Pittville Pump Rooms on Wednesday 16th May. This was the occasion when the new mayor received his chain of office. It was also the occasion when Klara, the outgoing mayor, announced how much had been raised for her chosen charities – a staggering £49,000, so far, for the Hollie Gazzard Trust and The Cheltenham & Gloucester Hospitals Charity's Focus Fund. Well done Klara!

Could you help raise a Guide Dog puppy in Gloucestershire? Guide Dogs is in urgent need of volunteers in Gloucestershire who could provide loving, temporary homes for puppies. Guide Dog pups live in volunteers’ homes for around a year, before leaving to start their formal guide dog training. During this year, volunteers help get pups used to social environments and travelling on public transport.
Volunteer Emily & Edie For more information on how you can become a Puppy Walker, please contact Volunteering Consultant Michelle Parsons on 0345 143 0194 or email michelle.parsons@guidedogs.org.uk
Emily Williams from Cheltenham has been a volunteer Puppy Walker for four years. “I love being a Puppy Walker – to know that I have helped a pup get ready for its guide dog training is just incredible,” Emily said. The other two puppies that Emily has looked after have qualified as working guide dogs. “Knowing how much of a difference they have made to their owners inspires me to keep doing it.” “I’d encourage anyone to do puppy walking for Guide Dogs, it’s the best thing ever and the pups you look after always make you smile.” Volunteers must be age 18 or over and Guide Dogs cover all feeding and veterinary costs. Staff at Guide Dogs provide regular support and guidance for Puppy Walkers. 10

Cheltenham Lions Club By David Green, Club PRO On Sunday 13th May, Lions Club members helped out with administration and marshalling at the British Heart Foundation Cycle Ride at the Racecourse. Over 2,000 cyclists took part in the event, completing either a 30- or 50-mile trip. It is hoped that the event raised over £100,000 for the foundation. On Saturday 19th May, the world-famous Treorchy Male Choir performed at the Roses Theatre in Tewkesbury. Starting the first half of the sold-out concert with Welsh favourites such as Calon Lan and the second with Senzenina, they carried on with 'What a Wonderful World' and 'What Would I Do Without My Music', which was very appropriate for the choir. The show was simply wonderful!
Part of the proceeds from the concert will go towards the running costs of the Club's Holiday Home for local disabled people and a large donation will be made to the Oncology Unit at Cheltenham Hospital to help provide Prostate Care. Over the past twenty years, the choir has performed for the Lions Club on ten occasions, raising in excess of £32,000, and gave another five concerts on behalf of Acorns Children’s Hospice in conjunction with the Lions Club. Due to the late development of plants this year, the Charlton Kings Plant Sale, which was scheduled for early May, unfortunately, had to be postponed. It is hoped that it can be rearranged for early June so keep an eye on our Facebook page for updates.

wanted to break down the walls of the venue, BARN ON THE FARM Imaking the festival more of a family in which the artist, audience, organisers and volunteers SMALLER IS are all together as one. DEFINITELY BETTER 2014 The 5th to the 8th July sees the return of Barn on the Farm at Over Farm near Gloucester. Started 9 years ago by Joshua Sanger, this wonderful independent festival has developed into a major feature on the music calendar. Joshua explains what inspired him to create Barn on the Farm, and what he hopes festival-goers will get out of the event. “I grew up in Gloucestershire, and the countryside is home to me, but music is what I lived for. At the tender age of 19, I naively decided that running a local music festival would be good idea and somehow I did pull it off. A line-up and 60 people turned up and we almost broke even. Year two and I managed to get Ed Sheeran – his first ever festival headline slot – and, with quite a bit of persuasion, Ben Howard. I'd also started trying to work out what I wanted to achieve with the festival. I'd been to a load of gigs at the time but somehow felt closer to the artists playing their music at home than seeing them live. That felt bizarre - surely you go to see a live performance to be a part of the music, part of the moment?
In 2014 we were delighted to be nominated for the Best Independent Festival award. At the awards evening, we were staggered when we heard "the winner is… Barn on the Farm!"
TODAY We’re now well known as arguably the best small festival for international artists to do special one-off performances. You start like James Bay did playing to 15 people on our third stage, you then work your way up to second stage and then you headline. Jack Garratt and Rag ’N’ Bone Man have similar Barn on the Farm stories. We encourage artists to camp, to watch each other’s sets and encourage everyone to just be who they are."
ACT NOW! Barn on the Farm has an outstanding line-up this year and still has a few tickets for Saturday and Sunday available but it’ll sell out soon. If you are reading this article it means you are local to the event – you can camp or you could probably even get a lift. Don’t miss out!

History & Technology
Cycling – without pedals 200 years ago, in the spring of 1818, German inventor Karl Drais patented and exhibited his bicycle forerunner the ‘Laufmaschine’ in France. Literally translated as ‘running machine’ it was the first means of transport to make use of the two-wheeler principle and was given the French name of draisienne. With both wheels in-line, it was propelled by the rider pushing along the ground with the feet as in regular walking or running. The front wheel and handlebar assembly was hinged to allow steering. On Karl Drais’s first reported ride from Mannheim on June 12, 1817, he covered 13 km in less than an hour. The design was welcomed by mechanically minded men daring to balance, and several thousand copies were built and used, primarily in Western Europe and in North America, going under the title of a dandy-horse.
Original made-to-measure draisienne
Several manufacturers in France and England made their own dandy-horses during its brief popularity in the summer of 1819 – most notably Denis Johnson of London, who used an elegantly curved wooden frame which allowed the use of larger wheels. However, its popularity rapidly faded when, partly due to an increasing number of accidents, some city authorities began to prohibit its use. That clearly wasn’t the end of the idea though, as it’s estimated there are now over 2 billion bicycles in the world.

Chalk Talk Last month, I heard a speech at the Queen’s Hotel which knocked my socks off. It wasn’t from a famous politician, a well-known sportsman, or a captain of industry. Nor was it a soaring piece of highfalutin oratory. Instead, it was a quiet, understated address from a young Gloucestershire man who had set up an ice cream business. He called it Adam’s Gelatos. What gave the speech added impact was that Adam had achieved his success despite being significantly disabled. But Adam didn’t want pity. He didn’t want special treatment. All he wanted was a level playing field to let him show the world what he could do. It was immensely powerful and moving. I have long been inspired to support people like Adam to fulfil their potential and achieve their dreams. I believe it is society’s moral duty.
inadvertently saying or doing the wrong thing. But help is available. The Access to Work scheme offers over £20,000 in central government funding to companies to make necessary adjustments when taking on a disabled member of staff. The Disability Confident campaign too provides advice to employers on how they attract, recruit and retain disabled workers. Over 5000 employers have signed up. I would urge local employers to look again at this pool of talent. Let’s unlock potential in our disabled community. And let’s support the next generation of disabled Gloucestershire entrepreneurs. - written by Alex Chalk, MP for Cheltenham

And Cheltenham is uniquely well placed to discharge that duty. Our town is home to the brilliant National Star College, recently graded as outstanding across all areas by both Ofsted and CQC. St Vincent’s and St George’s does remarkable work providing a range of care and support services to disabled people. The GEM project is breaking down barriers to work for those struggling with disabilities and mental health issues. GCHQ is a renowned public sector leader in this field. And who could forget the incredible Butterfly Garden?
