From the Editor

Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people

Dear Reader, It’s that time of year again when the schools will be out soon for the summer! With that comes the question of what we can do to keep the children entertained. Fortunately, we have a great 'What’s On' section for you towards the back of the magazine for some ideas of days out and local events you can go to. Make sure to also keep an eye on our Facebook and Twitter pages as we will be adding more events as they come in. July is a great month for music lovers with the Cheltenham Music Festival running from the 5th to the 16th July. The Festival, now in its 73rd year, presents a vast range of classical music – symphonic, choral, chamber, contemporary and early music – joined by jazz, folk, electronica, spoken word, film and various family events. A great big 'well done' to everyone who took part in the Race for Life last month in Gloucester or the Relay for Life in the Forest of Dean, you did everyone proud! I hope you have a great month ahead! For me, July equals watching Wimbledon and sunny days in the garden, so I’m looking forward to it! Best wishes,

Vicky Muller

A Perfect 10 for Wagging Tails! 10 Years of happy dog holidays and £10,000 raised for Hearing Dogs Charity Local businesswoman Alexis Bennett, owner of Gloucestershire dog boarding company Wagging Tails, was recently welcomed to the headquarters of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People at The Grange in Buckinghamshire to celebrate the Wagging Tails' 10th Birthday. Since Wagging Tails began supporting Hearing Dogs for Deaf People in January 2014 they have helped to raise over £10,000 for the charity. The celebrations saw Alexis present a cheque for £10,000 to Sir Stuart Hampson, President of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, before the cutting of the birthday cake and a toast celebrating 10 years of Wagging Tails and 35 years of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. Speaking on behalf of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People Nicholas Orpin, Community Fundraising Manager for the South East, stated: "Wagging Tails is such a great company and their customers get a unique and fantastic service. But they don't just stop there, they also help to change lives of deaf people by supporting Hearing Dogs, and that

tells you what great people they are too." Alexis launched the Gloucestershire branch of Wagging Tails in January 2016 and has successfully established her business as the premier dog holiday service provider in the locality. Calling all cyclists Tandemonium is a Cheltenhambased group for visually impaired people to get out on bikes, even if they don't have enough sight to ride. Using tandems, the visually impaired person rides behind a sighted pilot to explore new places, keep fit, make friends and, most importantly, to have fun! People with vision problems often have difficulties accessing sport and leisure activities which can leave them feeling isolated. We hope Page 6

that Tandemonium will become their freedom on wheels! However, the group can't exist without the help of volunteers to ride on the front of the tandem. It's a rewarding experience and a great way to make new friends. We would ensure you had the necessary training to feel confident when riding with a visually impaired person. If you're a keen cyclist or just like getting out on a bike, please consider supporting Tandemonium.

Stabilise your washing machine or dryer today This is probably one of the most boring-looking, yet brilliant products you have ever seen. It solves an age-old problem so many people seem to have and that is the urge to steady their washing and drying machines. Almost everyone who owns a front-load washer or dryer will be familiar with movement and vibration issues. The washer or dryer rattles and rolls during spin cycles, driving you and your fellow residents or if you live in a flat your neighbours mad. This innovative product, designed for all UNDER COUNTER machines, puts a stop to this! It has received

5-star ratings across the board and is incredibly easy to use. Simply slip the inflatable pad between your washer/dryer machine and the counter top and inflate it, using the handy manual pump, until you achieve an optimum snug fit. Then slide the pump to the top or side of the machine so you don’t see it. The appliance will now be stable during the most ferocious spin cycles, ensuring no more movement or jumping, while the noise will be significantly reduced. Your ears, floors, machine and neighbours will thank you for it! John, who developed the

product, says: "I have been working on it for over 2 years now testing materials and hand pumps and looking into air loss issues. I have finally got the whole thing right and here it is, all working! You can order your Steady Spin directly from my website." The cost for this solution is just £12.95 including 1st class P&P. Please visit www.steadyspin.co.uk to see a video of Steady Spin in action and click buy now.

Cheltenham woman takes on 100 mile Cotswold challenge in memory of husband Cheltenham PR Consultant, Verity Barr, is taking on the Cotswold Way over nine days whilst raising money for the hospice that cared for her husband. Verity Barr, 40 from Cheltenham will be walking the length of the Cotswold Way over nine days, all to raise money for Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice. Her husband, Henry was cared for by the Hospice at Home team two years ago and Verity felt that she wanted to give something back. The Cotswold Way is a 100 mile stretch between Bath and Chipping Campden where Verity will pass through several Cotswold towns and villages including Leckhampton, Painswick and Wooton-under-Edge. Verity said, “My husband died two years ago and I wanted to do something in his memory and to raise money for the Sue Ryder hospice which gave us so much support when we needed it.

“The care that the Sue Ryder team gave us at the end of my Henry’s life was really important. Henry didn’t want to go into hospital or a hospice and it was hugely important to him that he died at home – the Hospice at Home team helped us to achieve that. I’m not sure people realise how much care they provide to patients outside the hospice, especially during a time when they need it most.” Aside from raising funds for the hospice, Verity has other reasons for wanting to take on the Cotswold Way. “We live in a really beautiful place so it will be great to discover some places of the Cotswolds I’ve never been to before. Lots of my family and friends are joining me along the way so I’m looking forward to spending time with them and we can all experience the stunning surrounding together!” The hospice is the only in patient unit in Gloucestershire and looks after people aged 18 and over with life-limiting conditions such as cancer, heart disease and lung failure as well as complex neurological conditions. As well as in patient care, the hospice offers a Day Hospice program three days a week and a Hospice at Home service, allowing people to be cared for in their homes

whilst giving respite to their families and carers. Community Fundraising Officer, Ed Jones said, “We are very lucky to be situated in such a picturesque part of the country and so grateful to Verity for wanting to make the most of it, while supporting Leckhampton Court. Every penny raised allows us to continue providing the specialist care that is so important to the people of Gloucestershire. We want to wish her the best of the luck with her challenge and thank her for choosing to support the hospice. Verity will be embarking on her journey from Bath to Chipping Campden over the next few weekends. She set herself a fundraising target of £500 which she has already surpassed. If you would like to keep up to date with Verity’s challenge and donate to the Hospice, please visit www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/VerityBarr For more information on Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court and to find out how you can support the work of the hospice visit www.sueryder.org/leckhampton

Safe Journey by Pippa Greenwood

Now that the weather is really summery, everyone is rushing to their local garden centres, garden shows and nurseries to stock up on new plants for the garden. However, don’t forget to ensure that the plants you buy have a good chance of surviving, not only once they get home, but also during the journey there; it is worth taking a few very sensible precautions. Don’t take something home the day you buy it if it is too large to fit in your car. However slowly you drive, if the plant is sticking out of a sunroof or window the foliage is going to be scorched and damaged, and it is possible that a stem may be broken. Almost all garden centres now offer delivery and this is usually free of charge within a reasonable radius, so take advantage of this service. If the plant does fit in your car then remember to wrap the root ball in a black bin liner or a box, to prevent the back of your car becoming full of compost, grit etc. Always use the garden centre as the last port of call before travelling home, as in hot weather temperatures increase Page 12

quickly in a closed car, even with the windows or sunroof open. Under these conditions the plants can soon be boiled alive, literally! Plants in the boot should be safer for a slightly longer period of time, but you should travel straight home once you have made your purchases. If you are determined to take something home that protrudes slightly from your car, then it is essential that you wrap up anything which is sticking out really well to prevent leaf scorch and damage. Make sure that it is tied down extremely well so that it can’t blow off on the way home. Remember that anything protruding from your car could potentially cause a driving hazard to other road users, so be sensible. Even on a short journey home, plants which are exposed to exaggerated heat inside a car or the scorching effect of sunlight travelling through the car glazing can be seriously damaged, so cover them up with something to decrease the risk. It is worth taking a few old newspapers with you when you go to the garden centre, as these make perfect temporary

tents. Remember that most plants prefer fairly constant conditions, so try not to put them through too many changes in a short space of time. Ideally, take them from one area in the garden centre to somewhere similar in your garden, and keep any travelling during hot weather to a minimum. If they look at all damaged from their journey then give them a week or two to recuperate in dappled shade in a protected position in your garden. And don’t forget that when you plant anything new in your garden, if the weather is at all dry it is worth waiting until the evening or at least late afternoon before planting. Make sure that everything is kept well watered, as this will increase the chances of the plants establishing without too much distress. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for a really useful selection of favourite gardening items including growing frames, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, raised bed kits, Nemaslug and other nematode controls and copper tape, pull-out EasyTunnels, signed books and lots more besides.

Michael Reilly DipCFHP MAR LLLT www.michael-foothealth.com I offer reflexology for fertility. For couples trying for a baby, there may be no apparent reason for subfertility. Couples may undergo medical treatment and my fertility reflexology can help support and enhance that treatment. Reflexology helps you relax and can improve your mood, aid sleep, relieve tension and reduce anxiety. The resulting sense of well-being can improve a couple’s chances of conceiving. Stress has a negative impact on fertility as stressreleased hormones keep the body on edge, which leads to exhaustion, suppressing the reproductive system, so reducing stress is the number one priority. This is true for both the woman and the man and it’s best to treat both. Reflexology has a good track record for helping couples to have a baby and I can help as I have a deeper understanding of fertility and reproductive reflexology.

Cake and Bake Peach Crostata

A crostata is an Italian lattice-topped pie which can be sweet or savoury. This one has a fruity fresh peach filling. Serve with crème fraîche or ice cream.

Ingredients:

1. To make the pastry, sift the flour into a large bowl.

PASTRY • 350g plain flour • 175g butter, chilled and diced • 2 tbsp caster sugar

2.

• 1 large egg, beaten with 2tbsp cold water FILLING • 6 peaches, halved, stones removed and thickly sliced

3. 4.

• 2 tbsp caster sugar • 2 tsp cornflour • Milk to glaze

5.

• Icing sugar, to dust

Serves 6 Ready in 1 hour 15 minutes, plus chilling TIP

If you don’t have a pastry lattice roller, cut the rolled out pastry into thin strips and drape over the filling. Page 20

6.

7.

Add the butter and rub in with your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar, add the egg and water, then stir with a knife until the mixture begins to stick together. Gather the dough with one hand, turn out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for a few seconds until smooth. Flatten into a round, wrap in cling film and chill for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 200C, fan 180C, gas 6. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up. Roll out about two-thirds of the pastry on a lightly floured surface to the thickness of a one pound coin and use to line a 23cm round pie dish. Toss the peaches in a bowl with the sugar and cornflour then pile into the pastry case. Roll out the rest of the pastry to a 20cm circle and use a lattice pastry roller to cut slashes in the pastry (see tip). Brush around the edge of the pastry case with a little water then drape the pastry circle over the filling, pulling it gently to create the lattice effect. Press the pastry edges together to seal and trim off any excess pastry. Glaze the pastry with milk, then place on the hot baking sheet in the oven and bake for 35-45 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden. Serve warm or cold, dusted with icing sugar.

What is Kinetic Chain Release? Kinetic Chain Release (also known as KCR) is a simple yet extremely effective system of medically recognised and approved, gentle joint mobilisations and stretches, developed and taught to those who wish to learn by Scottish Physiotherapist Hugh Gilbert. KCR brings the physical body back into balance quickly and easily, frequently providing a high degree of relief and even instant resolution in many cases from pain and discomfort caused by a variety of conditions such as Chronic back pain; Fibromyalgia; Carpal Tunnel Syndrome; Chronic Fatigue; IBS; Migraine & Cluster Headaches; Teeth Clenching/ Grinding; Snoring/Sleep Apnoea; Bloating; Tennis/Golfers Elbow; Behavioural Disorders; Weak Ankles; Knee Problems; Neck Pain; Plantar Fasciitis; Stress; Menstrual Pain; Recurring Hamstring issues and PTSD. Clinically evaluated in North

America by the organisation FOTO (Focus on Therapeutic Outcomes), who have 19,600 clinicians listed with them in over 4,200 clinics and 16.9 million patient assessment outcomes reviewed, KCR was shown to meet the "Gold Standard" in measuring rehabilitation outcomes much quicker than other methods, thus saving much time and money. Hugh Gilbert's book "The Early-Aging Workforce, which is very readable for the layperson, explores his "putting together" of the KCR sequence over a number of years while running a number of high profile clinics in Canada and consulting to medical insurance companies and big corporations. KCR has many benefits and can reduce Health Care costs significantly as it can take fewer sessions than related modalities to achieve the same or an improved result when looking at clinical outcomes. It is a simple procedure which is currently revolutionising physical rehabilitation, with apparent knock-on effects on emotional/behavioural issues, and with 900 clinicians predominately in the US and Scotland, then other parts

of the UK and Europe, it is likely to continue to grow quickly. Your Gloucestershire based therapist is Mark Harris based in Drybrook, who has trained and been accredited by assessment with Hugh Gilbert personally as a result of his own experience of the KCR modality when all other avenues had not produced any or lasting benefits or results. Having been diagnosed with chronic fatigue/adrenal fatigue related to complex post-traumatic stress from service in HM forces and then other public services, it was only on meeting Hugh and some of his training team that Mark actually made substantial progress and then found other approaches working with lasting effect. As a result of the dramatic improvement, Mark decided to train in KCR and to offer the service to others. He is looking at hiring treatment room space or can do workplace visits or home visits if sufficient space. For any discussion or to book an assessment and treatments please contact Mark on 07824449011 or 01594 543585 or email alderhollyltd@yahoo.co.uk.

Ever fallen over or been pulled over? Back pain, neck pain or arm numbness? KCR Therapy can help! BRING YOUR BODY BACK TO BALANCE & HEALTH KCR (Kinetic Chain ReleaseTM) is a series of mobilisations and stretches which allows your body to return to natural balance. It is gentle, non-invasive and safe for all ages. Benefits can include relief from chronic pain, increased energy levels and improvement in sports. KCR has been subjected to clinical review in the United States and is recognised as providing the possible results suggested in this advert.

Kinetic Chain Release (KCR) can give release from: • Chronic Fatigue • Fibromyalgia • Carpal Tunnel • Knee Problems • Sprained Ankles • Scoliosis • Teeth Clenching • IBS • Chronic Stress

• Plantar Fasciitis • Back Pain • Neck Pain • Recurring Hamstring Strains • Pelvic problems • Tennis Elbow • Bloating • R.S.I • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Spectacular! Disney’s multi award-winning musical The Lion King has taken audiences onto a magical journey to the African Pride Lands at London’s Lyceum Theatre for 18 years, making it one of the ten longest-running West End shows and a highly popular choice with theatre goers. Based on the animated Disney film from 1994, the musical follows the story of a young lion called Simba. Born as son to Mufasa, King of the Pride Lands, Simba is destined to rule over the animal kingdom. However, following an evil scheme from his uncle Scar which results in Mufasa’s premature death, Simba is tricked into leaving the kingdom as Scar usurps the role of king and assumes control of the Pride Lands. Years pass by until a chance encounter with his childhood friend Nala causes Simba to return to the Pride Lands to defeat Scar and take on his rightful position as king. The opportunity to experience this acclaimed West End musical should not be passed up. It had always been a wish of mine to see it so when I finally had the chance during a visit to London last month, I was thrilled and was certainly not disappointed!

Particularly prominent in this production is the inventive way in which the actors embody their animal characters through the use of puppets, headpieces, masks and props. Whereas in traditional puppetry the person behind the puppet isn’t seen, the Lion King takes an intentionally human-focused approach to bring the characters to life, convey emotions and to reinforce the humanity of the story which takes you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions. Costume designer Credit: Johan Persson

The show begins with the celebration of Simba’s birth at Pride Rock and

I must say rarely have I witnessed an opening scene as powerful as this one (have the tissues ready!). Beautifully designed animals emerge from amidst the audience and take to the stage to the breathtaking sound of Elton John and Tim Rice’s iconic song Circle of Life. It takes mere seconds to be transported to the African savanna and be immersed in the rich culture and storyline. The events that unfold before the viewer’s eyes are a truly amazing visual spectacle. Constantly changing colourful stage designs, intricate and imaginative costumes and a multitude of shadow plays, projections and clever effects (especially with the lighting) give the eyes plenty to feast upon during the show.

Credit: Brinkhoff and Mogenburg

THE LION KING

and director Julie Taymor, the mastermind behind the show, specifically wanted the audience to see both the puppets and the actors who manipulate them; it’s this double event, both actors and puppets showing emotions and telling the story, which makes the performance so fascinating and expressive. Talented actors and incredible dancers bring the animal kingdom and its colourful characters to life. From the wise and kind-hearted Mufasa and the brave, yet foolish young Simba, to the cunning and evil Scar and the zanier characters such as the hyenas, Timon, Pumbaa and Rafiki. The latter is portrayed by a woman who will definitely have you in stitches throughout the show. Rafiki is the only character who does not appear in puppet form, nor does she wear a mask thus retaining her human character completely. The crowning achievement of this simply enthralling production is, of course, the music. The show features all the iconic and well-known songs from the movie, making it a stunning, all-inclusive experience that you simply don’t want to end. Theatre goers could be heard humming and singing the catchy tunes whilst departing the auditorium and leaving for the streets of London. Not many musicals can boast such a following; it makes for a truly spellbinding evening! Disney’s Lion King plays Tuesdays to Saturdays at 7.30pm and Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays at 2.30pm. For tickets and more information, visit www.thelionking.co.uk or call the Box Office on 0844 871 3000 (charges apply). - Written by Anne Golldack

A PEAK BEHIND THE SCENES

Credit: Helen Maybanks

During my theatre visit I was fortunate enough to partake in a backstage tour of the show. It was a rare opportunity to take a close-up look at the amazing puppets, props and costumes. The puppets that appeared to be heavy in terms of weight, such as the antelopes, were surprisingly light. In comparison the grass skirts, which the actors seemed to swing around so effortlessly on stage, were quite cumbersome. It was simply captivating to see the level of detail when it came to the beautifully woven costumes. The 14 lionesses in the show, for example, each have an individually designed, hand sewn corset – no two are the same and each corset is hand-painted and the fabric handdyed (these are also fairly heavy). A designated in-house beader maintains them and carries out repairs where needed. Also striking was the limited space behind the stage, given the extensive stage design and many scene changes as well as the large number of props and the many people involved (on stage and behind). Most of the space is in the height so all the props are hoisted up and strategically stored away.

Make your theatre visit extra special Enjoy a pre- or post-theatre dinner ...at INDIGO

The Lyceum Theatre is situated right opposite the One Aldwych Hotel which hosts, amongst others, two restaurants and a luxurious lobby bar. On the 1st floor of the hotel you will find the INDIGO RESTAURANT which allows you to relax in a comfortable chair, overlooking the Lyceum Theatre with its historic grand façade and portico entrance or, should you opt for a seat by the balcony, the buzzing hotel bar on the level below. The Indigo Restaurant serves innovative, gluten and dairy-free dishes, using only the finest and freshest British ingredients and changes its menu regularly. During our visit, both my guest and I opted for the three-course meal from the pre-theatre menu at £27 per person (a two-course option at £22 is also available). After sampling some delicious freshly baked bread, I chose the vegetarian starter which comprised of a slow poached, Breckland Brown egg in Alexander soup served with crispy wild rice, while my partner had the hand-picked Dorset crab, accompanied by Asparagus and watercress. As main courses we chose the Rhug Estate Organic Lamb with baby Lincolnshire potatoes and wild garlic alongside the Filet of Sea Trout with roasted fennel, saffron potato, capers and white balsamic. To conclude what can only be described as a superb meal, we both indulged in the Vanilla panna cotta with poached Yorkshire Rhubarb. During the meal we shared a bottle of white wine, recommended to us by one of the friendly waiters, which complemented our main courses perfectly. The food and service were second to none; each dish was beautifully composed, cooked and presented and wholly satisfying through its lightness, texture and taste. The pre-theatre menu is available Monday to Sunday, 5.30pm - 6.30pm, and post-theatre Monday to Sunday, 10pm - 10.15pm. …at ENEKO AT ONE ALDWYCH Treat yourself to a superb dining experience with a visit to ENEKO at One Aldwych, the first London outpost of renowned chef Eneko Atxa whose Azurmendi restaurant in Bibalo, Northern Spain, has been awarded three Michelin stars. ENEKO at One Aldwych serves Basque country cuisine with a modern twist and is only a few footsteps away from the Lyceum Theatre. Although easy to miss from street level at first sight, the restaurant is a real culinary gem.

To view the menu and book your table, please visit www.eneko.london.

Fancy a pre- or mid-theatre snack or drink? Snacks are available in the entrance hall of the theatre and there are a total of four licensed bars in the building (one on each level and two in the Royal Circle). There is also the option of booking an Ambassador Experience package with your theatre tickets which allows entry to the VIP Ambassador Lounge 90 minutes before the show and during the interval. Here you can enjoy a variety of drinks and nibbles (they do fantastic Bagels) but do hurry as the 30-minute interval passes very quickly.

Make the most of your visit

Set in the basement the asymmetrical wooden tables, comfortable armchairs, private red booths and stylish modern interior all invite you to sit back and relax. Begin the evening with a glass of wine from the carefully composed all-Spanish wine list, which includes four wines personally created by Eneko and his uncle Gorka (I whole-heartedly recommend the G22 by Gorka Izagirre at £13 per glass if you enjoy white wine). The easy-to-navigate menu offers a varied range of meat, fish and vegetarian options and the friendly and accommodating waiters will be more than happy to help you choose and answer any questions you may have about the food and wine they serve. All dishes are beautifully presented and, thanks to varied textures, rich aromatic flavours and bold combinations, are a true sensation for the taste buds. After sampling some delicious sourdough bread with freshly mixed butter, I started my meal with the heavenly creamy Duck Liver Parfait while my guest had the sumptuous Suckling Pig Tempura. For mains, we had the Basque style squid in ink sauce and the slow-cooked oxtail accompanied by stuffed Piquillo peppers and mashed potato; both were cooked to perfection and simply stunning. To round of our meals, we sampled the Salted Caramel Mousse and the Pineapple Sorbet. The latter came with celery foam and sweet celery ribbons which was a truly innovative and exciting combination – nothing I had ever tasted before! While the above dishes were chosen from the à la carte menu, Eneko at One Aldwych also offers a set pre- and post-theatre menu from Tuesday to Saturday (5.00pm - 6.30pm and 10.00pm - close) at £25 per person for a two-course meal and £28 for a three-course meal. Chalk Talk With the General Election campaign over, I had the chance to visit both the Science Festival and the Cheltenham Food and Drink Festival. Both are fantastic events, so wellorganised and bursting with innovation. Throughout the year, our Festivals are a wonderful showcase for Cheltenham. They provide a great occasion for local residents and are a major boost for tourism and the town centre economy. Quite rightly they’re the envy of towns up and down the country. I’d like to thank everyone who came up and chatted with me whilst I was there. Inevitably the conversation turned

Big Brass at hospice in show of support

Gloucester Brass Band are putting on a summer family performance at Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice to raise funds for the charity which provides specialist hospice care for people living with life limiting conditions in the county. ‘Concert at the Court’ takes place on Saturday 22nd July from 1pm to 5pm in the beautiful grounds of Leckhampton Court Hospice, Church Road, Leckhampton, Cheltenham with the historic manor house as the backdrop. It offers a fun day out for all the family with ice cream and refreshments available to buy on the day, bouncy castle and teddy bear’s picnic for children and special interval performance from Angie's Community Choir from Kingsway in Gloucester. Tickets cost £5 per adult, £2.50 for children aged five to 16 and underfives go free. A family ticket for two adults and three children costs £15, with all proceeds going to Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice to help fund the specialist care given by the charity to people living with conditions

to politics and the way forward. No one was under any illusions about the challenges facing our country, particularly with the Brexit negotiations getting underway. Here in Cheltenham, one of my first priorities is a meeting with the Chief Executive of Gloucestershire NHS Hospitals Foundation Trust. There are a number of areas where we must continue working together, for example recruiting more GPs and improving access to mental health. But I believe there are two issues that need immediate focus: cancer treatment and the future of Cheltenham’s A&E. Back in 2013 Cheltenham’s Accident and Emergency hours were reduced. Our A&E now operates between 8am and 8pm. I’m asking the Trust to introduce an urgent care centre at the hospital operating between 8pm and 8am every day. It would

like cancer, heart failure, lung disease and neurological conditions. Tickets can be purchased online at www.sueryder.org/ courtconcert or by emailing leckhampton.fundraising@suerdyer. org or calling 01242 246285. Families are encouraged to bring their own blankets, chairs and picnics to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere on the tranquil back lawn of the hospice while Gloucester Brass perform, offering a rare opportunity to enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the historic manor house – said to be one of the oldest homes in Cheltenham. The young at heart are invited to bring along a teddy to take part in a teddy bears’ picnic too with a prize for the best dressed bear. Alysia Cameron Price, Senior Hospice Fundraiser at Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice said, “The hospice is a really special place and we’re really looking forward to opening our doors and welcoming families to enjoy a one off summer concert in our beautiful grounds. With bouncy castle, ice cream and refreshments it will be fun for all the family while helping to raise much needed funds so we can be there

be in addition to existing daytime A&E hours. This would provide doctor–led support for our excellent night time emergency nursing team. It would give us 24-hour cover in the heart of Cheltenham. Cancer is now the leading cause of death in Gloucestershire. The oncology team at Cheltenham General Hospital have a tremendous success rate, well above the national average. I’m delighted that we’ve managed to win a pledge from Government for a new, state-of-theart, LINAC radiotherapy machine. I want to explore what else can be done to support them. Everyone knows someone whose life has been touched by cancer. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to make Cheltenham a national leader in cancer treatment and recovery? Now that’s definitely something worth fighting for. - by Alex Chalk

for local people and their families at a time they need help most.” Mandy Phipps plays second coronet in the band and also works in Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice’s kitchen. She said, “Gloucester Brass loves playing at Sue Ryder for such a worthy cause, we play at Christmas in the Chapel and will continue to do so. Please come along with a picnic, blanket and enjoy a summer afternoon of music. There's nothing more British than a Brass Band, cup of tea out of a flask and a sandwich.” Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court is home to the only inpatient unit in the county giving hospice care in its specialist 16 bed unit, alongside day services, hospice at home and family support teams. All its services are given free of charge but as a charity it must raise the majority of the £8,000 it costs every day to run through the support of the local community and through fundraising events like this. Town Centre Talking Roll up, roll up, Cheltenham is putting on a show – all over town Chilli Fiesta in Cambray Place

Cheltenham is famed for its festivals and events. Only last month across the same weekend, both Cheltenham Science Festival and the Cheltenham Food and Drink Festival were attracting rave reviews as they staged internationalquality fare. The town also attracts many outdoor markets, with the regular Cotswolds Markets being backed up by the twice-yearly International Market and Christmas Market. Throw in the Literature, Jazz and Music festivals as well, and Cheltenham gives the impression of a town that is making the very best of its outdoor spaces to attract both locals and visitors to the town centre. But think again about the places where the events took place. The Festivals have been doing some great work, with the support of the Cheltenham Business Improvement District (BID), in taking more events into the town centre, through their ...around town programme. However, most of their output is based on Montpellier Gardens and Imperial Gardens. The markets are exclusively held on the paved area of The Promenade, unless there are two happening at the same time, when they overflow on to the Long Gardens outside the Municipal Offices. The truth is that there are other open spaces in the town centre Page 34

Sup & Chow launches new menu Last month the community pub and eaterie Sup & Chow, located on Bath Road, launched an exciting new menu which perfectly compliments their already popular authentic stonebaked pizzas. Back in March, Sup & Chow took the decision to change their food offering due to facility issues, bringing in Barrel & Stone pizzas in place of traditional pub food. The pizzas proved extremely popular and are a great hit both with casual diners and party groups. They are also available for delivery on Deliveroo and as takeaway (enjoy a free glass of wine while you wait). Following a number of group bookings for pizza parties, Sup & Chow decided to host a Pizza & Jazz Night, which was a real hit and has since become a monthly event. After rejigging the kitchen and recruiting chef Tyrone Perkins, Sup & Chow are pleased to be able to provide a lovely fresh food menu. Tyrone is an excellent chef whose food is simply delicious and prepared with true passion. With him on board and the new menu in full swing, the pub attracts more guests than ever and has been known to sell out of food. ”I was delighted to be invited to Sup & Chow to sample their new menu and I certainly wasn’t disappointed. The staff are warm and friendly and once inside the pub, you are so seduced by the cosy shabby chic decor, with candles and fresh flowers on each table, that you will never want to leave.

The new menu, which is served daily, consists of light lunches, small plates and mains. Dishes include culinary gems such as gluten free Salt & Pepper Squid, BBQ Chicken Wings, handmade Burgers, Spiced Quinoa-stuffed Red Pepper, Honey Roasted Ham, Egg & Chips and the chef's favourite – Black Pudding Scotch Eggs.

don't know is that the pub has been knocked through to the former skittle alley in order to create a large pub and restaurant area. There is a lovely courtyard in the back too, perfect for alfresco dining! The pub attracts many families and provides plenty of space for buggies and for children to run around and visit the rabbits. It's also dog-friendly, resident dog Bailey is always happy to meet new pals! Sup & Chow's staff is friendly, welcoming and accommodating. Their ethos is simple: to provide great service, hosting and food & drink. Everyone at Sup & Chow loves what they do and it shows. The pub is a real community hub that puts on live music every week and a pub quiz on Thursdays so make sure to visit.

On Wednesdays and Thursdays, you can grab the early bird steak deal up to 8.00pm and Thursday night is Steak Night with 2 steaks and a bottle of wine for just £30! In addition to the new menu, existing favourites like the pizzas and the popular roasts on a Sunday will continue to be on offer. Sup & Chow has a ‘Tardis-like’ character and what many people

Fun for all ages at Bugsboarding

What a pleasure it was to be invited to Bugsboarding Mountainboard Centre at Overton Cottage in Maisemore (GL2 8HP) to see and try all the different activities available to do there. Having never visited the centre before, I wasn’t quite sure what was there. However, I was amazed at how many different things you can try whether it be mountain boarding, mountain biking, dirt scooting or grass sledging. I must say at this point it was my son and his friend doing the activities! AJ and Bugs were very welcoming and soon the boys were getting kitted out in all their safety gear to start having a few hours of fun! The first thing they tried was mountain boarding. With the help of Freddie, they were taken half way down the hill to learn how to balance on the board and more importantly how to stop and land correctly. After half an hour, the boys

had mastered what to do and were off down the hill at quite a speed I might add with Freddie following behind to make sure they were ok. The best bit was not having to walk back up the hill to the top as Bugs was waiting at the bottom with his truck to bring everyone back to the top. At just £10.00 (14 years and under) or £12.00 for adults (15 years and over) for 1 hour what a great way to spend time doing something different. Scooters were the next thing to try. They jumped on and decided to go a little higher up the hill to gather more speed. Soon they were off on the dirt tracks, taking in the twists and turns of the course and relishing the freedom that the tracks gave them. Finally, it was time for grass sledging, and after some gentle persuasion from AJ, I decided to have a go too! Freddie gave us instructions on how to steer and more importantly on how to stop! And once we had proved we could stop we set off down the hill. Gathering speed and with the wind in my face, it was the most exhilarating experience. I couldn’t wait to get to the bottom to get back up the hill to have another go. The sledges can carry two people if you have young children that want to give it a go or you can just go down by yourself. The centre caters for any group booking including birthdays, school groups, hen/stag do's and corporate training/team building. We had a fabulous time and

Page 36

I can highly recommend this for kids of all ages and adults too! You can just turn up at the centre but I would recommend booking to avoid disappointment. You can contact the centre by calling 07749 897330 or emailing info@bugsboarding.co.uk. Open from 11.00am to 5.00pm Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays during school holidays and every weekend. www.bugsboarding.co.uk - Written by Sarah Dingwall

Home & Interiors Update Your Bathroom for Summer can make a big difference. Think about adding artwork to the walls, too, for colour, pattern and a dramatic focal point.

Give your bathroom an appealing summer makeover with our easy-toachieve tips. A DASH OF PAINT Any room can be updated with a lick of paint, and bathrooms are no different. Choose specially formulated bathroom paint, which provides longlasting protection against condensation and mould. Fresh white looks great in a bathroom, while deeper shades such as charcoal or navy make a striking impact, and mid blues, greens or yellows are fresh and cheery. UPDATE YOUR ACCESSORIES Choose all sorts of fashionable new options for items such as towels, soap dishes, shower curtains, even loo roll holders and toilet seats, from graphic patterns to flamingo designs or marble and copper - little things Page 38

REPLACE YOUR TAPS AND WASTES Out-of-date tap styles and scratched wastes are easy for a plumber to replace, but take advice on technical considerations like water pressure and how far taps should project over the basin - then choose functional styles that you love. You could also save on bills by installing watersaving taps and an aerated or low-flow showerhead. CONCEAL CLUTTER The easiest way to create storage space is with a slimline, wall-mounted cupboard (perhaps with a mirror on the door), though other options include racks, rails, shelves and hooks. Matching baskets, rows of glass jars and small wooden crates are pretty and help keep things tidy, while free-standing caddies and towel ladders conveniently hold heaps of stuff. AT THE WINDOW Consider replacing a dull roller blind with something more interesting - Roman blinds, café curtains or wooden louvres or shutters are all good options, or a cheap and instant transformation is possible with frosted adhesive film. ADD A PLANT Houseplants are back in fashion once again, so look for plants

By Katherine Sorrell

that thrive in damp conditions and are happy with the level of light in your bathroom. Options include peace lilies, English ivy, reeds, palms and Boston ferns. BRING IN MORE LIGHT Mirrors help make your smallest room feel brighter and more spacious, so an oversized mirror will be a statement piece as well as an essential element. Swapping to LED lighting will save money in the long run, and changing the light fittings themselves is a quick job for an electrician if you want alternatives that are good-looking and up-to-date. Remember that they must comply with safety regulations and be certified for use in a damp environment. ATTACK OLD GROUT Try cleaning discoloured grout with proprietary products first, but if the mould or stains won’t shift, buy a special grout rake from a hardware store and carefully remove the old grout to a depth of at least 2mm, then apply new grout. While you’re at it, remove black and mouldy silicone sealant with a sharp knife, then clean and dry the area thoroughly and re-apply new sealant. You’ll need a steady hand for this bit, so take a deep breath before you start, and if in doubt, search for an online video for guidance.

COUNCILLORS CORNER I was honoured to become Mayor of Cheltenham on May 15th. The weeks since have flown by and I have had an amazing time so far attending a wide variety of events and meeting people around our beautiful town. This is a civic role rather than a political position but each Mayor tries to make the role their own. In previous years, former Mayors have thought about focussing on particular aspects of our town‘s life. The most recent Mayor, for example, wanted to thank the many volunteers who work throughout our town and did so by inviting them to afternoon tea in the parlour. During my Mayoral year, I want to focus on our town’s motto, Salubritas et Eruditio – Health and Education as these are so important not just to the origins of our town but also for

the vitality and quality of life of residents now. The work of the two charities I have chosen to support through the Mayor of Cheltenham Appeal (The Cheltenham and Gloucester Hospitals Charity‘ s Focus Fund and the Hollie Gazzard Trust) reflect the choice I have made to celebrate the ethos behind our town’s motto. The Focus Fund supports patients undergoing treatment at the Oncology Centre at Cheltenham General Hospital and HGT does so much to educate people about the impact of domestic abuse and stalking. I am also asking local parents and schools to nominate teachers or other members of staff at our local schools who have gone the extra mile to make a difference to pupils. It would also be good to hear about local medics, GPs or other

health workers who have gone beyond the call of duty to make a difference to people. I hope to invite all those nominated to join me for tea in the Mayor’s parlour so I can hear more about the work they do and say thank you. If there is someone who works in education or healthcare in Cheltenham who you would like to nominate please contact me via email: klara. sudbury@gloucestershire.gov.uk. - Cllr Klara Sudbury, Mayor of Cheltenham

Cheltenham Calendar Get that summer feeling this month with plenty of outdoor events across Cheltenham. Kick off July with the Midsummer Fiesta at Montpellier Gardens on the 1st. This free festival runs from noon to nine in the evening and features a great range of stalls, music and activities to keep all ages entertained. There will be plenty of arts and crafts for the young ones and an obstacle course and a football cage for the adults still young at heart. Get involved in the classic car show or join in with the Zumba and Salsa demonstrations. Pair all this with local food and drink from all over the Gloucestershire area and some (fingers crossed) decent weather and you’ve got a fantastic day out. The Cricket Festival is just around the corner, so whether you fancy a game or two in the park or cheering on the Gloucestershire team with a locally brewed ale in your hand, now’s your chance. underground music that is sure to have you dancing on into the night. Jamie Lenman and The Front Bottoms are amongst those sure to draw a crowd but headliners Deaf Havana and the Alkaline Trio are the biggest attractions for this year’s attendees.

The Cheltenham Music Festival is particularly strong this year with a lineup spreading across every facet of classical music throughout the first half of July. Director Meurig Brown brings together Mirga Gražinyté-Tyla, Bryn Terfel and BBC Young Musician 2016 winner Sheku Kanneh-Mason for two weeks of immersive culture. Tickets are on sale now, but be fast as a lot of events and acts are selling out very quickly.

Cheltenham's Everyman Theatre is showing the adaptation of the muchloved children’s book The Gruffalo this month. Other unmissable productions include the popular novel turned stage show Around the World in 80 Days and the beloved 'Mod' Musical All or Nothing. Or why not take your love for theatre outside with the Open Air Theatre Festival at the Bacon Theatre which will give you a summer of alfresco drama, musical performances and cinema under the stars. Lions Club of Cheltenham July Update Prostate Cancer is a subject most men have thought about but then taken no action about getting themselves tested. Have you ever been puzzled too?

Some time ago a photograph of this small round thatched building at Seven Springs appeared in the Gloucestershire Echo. There followed lively speculations about its function; none of which were correct. This made me think about an aspect of country life which is rapidly fading from memory - the country carrier. In this article, I will set the general scene and my next will focus on our local carriers. Few readers are likely to remember the country carrier, that essential link between the village and market town in an age when the railway brought goods to the towns and their shops but not to the surrounding villages lacking their own railway station. The typical carrier was a one man concern owning a horse and cart of various shapes and sizes who travelled to the nearest market town once, twice or three times a week, carrying

the village shoppers and running errands for those who could not go themselves. So how does this link to the building standing at Seven Springs, known locally as the parcel house? It was there for the country carrier from North Cerney to Cheltenham to leave the parcels and newspapers to be collected by the good folk of Seven Springs for whom he ran errands. Amazingly, I took a photograph of it before the road junction was rebuilt several years ago and, also amazingly, it was rebuilt and not demolished with the junction's remodelling, even though it is not an exact replica. The age of the country carrier lasted from the 1820s to the early 1950s. The main centre in our county was originally Gloucester, but when Cheltenham grew as a spa town with an increased number of shops, it too was a busy centre and became the destination of those carriers who served Bishop's Cleeve, Winchcombe and surrounding villages. At the height of the carriers' popularity in 1880, fifty different carriers operated one hundred and fourteen journeys each week into Cheltenham; each of them ending at one of ten of the town's

inns and hotels. Almost all of them stood on the High Street, stretching from The Shakespeare (now The Shamrock) in the Lower High Street, which is now often referred to as the West End, to The Old Swan in the Strand. Fortunately, both of these still survive, but nearly all the others have disappeared over the years as the town centre has been constantly redeveloped. Not only did these inns provide a convenient drop-off and pick-up point for any passengers, but they provided the carrier with the facilities to park his cart, water and feed his horse and if he had few errands to distract him, enjoy the hospitality of the establishment whilst picking up juicy town gossip. On many occasions, the fact that his horse knew its way home saved the carrier's reputation, even if on the climb to the Cotswolds at Cleeve Hill or above Dowdeswell or up to Seven Springs, the luckless passengers were expected to get out and push! In fact, the carriers' carts were often so overloaded and underpowered that it was quicker to walk anyway. At the beginning of the last century, the wives of the farmers and market gardeners in Bishop's Cleeve more often than not used to walk carrying their eggs, butter, fruit and vegetables to sell in Cheltenham, rather than rely on the carrier's cart. Produce sold, they then walked back. Until the arrival of the Great Western Railway in our area in 1906, it was the country carrier on whom the inhabitants of Bishop's Cleeve, Winchcombe and surrounding villages depended for their link to Cheltenham. I will investigate this in detail in my next article. - David Aldred
