From the Editor Dear Reader,

Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people

As we wave goodbye to Spring 2016, we welcome British summertime in the hope for plenty of sun, fun days out, and lots of summer fetes and picnics in the park. With the weather warming up it’s the perfect time to start getting out and about and getting some more exercise. I am going to start doing my local Parkrun every weekend, wish me luck! Over the next few weeks, you will start seeing the flags of St. George spring up everywhere to commemorate the start of Euro 2016 and expressing England’s dream of winning a tournament for the first time since 1966. June also gives us the perfect excuse to enjoy some delicious strawberries and cream and the odd Pimms or two while we enjoy the start of the Wimbledon fortnight. (This is also the time of year I take up tennis very seriously)! Cheltenham has the Science Festival, the Cheltenham Challenge and the unmissable Ukulele Festival to look forward to this month, which features “The Big Busk” where hundreds of Uke players come together to sing and play in Imperial Gardens on Sunday 19th at 10.30am. Best wishes, Vicky Muller

Richard Denny Your Success Coach The media have called Richard Denny ‘The Millionaire Maker’. For over 30 years he has helped thousands of people into financial wealth, and others into greater achievement and happiness. His lectures, books, videos, DVD’s and CD’s are bought around the world.

Ten Tips for Written Communication – Misery or Joy? Written communication has a long lasting effect because it can be read over and over again. It can reignite joy and bitterness. In my years of consultancy work, I have seen the written word cause more aggression, drama and strikes than any other means of communication. The written word, if there is any ambiguity, will always be read negatively. You must write, not so you are understood, but so you cannot be misunderstood. Although communicating by letter has decreased considerably in recent years, using email which of course also requires people to spell and use grammar correctly, has increased. If you want to have real impact and show that you care, a letter or card can be the most powerful way of winning friends and influencing people. In the business world those who want an appointment with a decision maker should write a letter first and then follow up with a phone call. So here are a few tips to help make your written word more effective: 1. Firstly, attract attention with an attention getting word, phrase or line, for example ‘Here is some good news’. Always try to get something positive either on your subject matter or your first words that will illicit the response ‘I want to hear what you have to say’. 2. Keep it short. More and more people are getting emails on their mobiles so long emails can be hard to read, try and stick to 2 or 3 paras and 2 to 3 sentences per para. This also applies to letters; short letters get read. 3. Don’t criticise or be negative. This is the biggest cause of communication breakdown,

aggression and stress. If this is necessary, speak don’t write. 4. Read before sending. Never send an email or a letter without reading it all through before sending and ask yourself, if you got this how would you feel? 5. Choose the right time. Never send an email or letter in response to anger or frustration caused by one you may have received without first giving yourself time. A great tip, don’t send an email overnight, draft it reread it and then send it the next day. 6. Check spelling and grammar. This is so easy with spellcheck, as otherwise you will lose respect and trust. 7. Use key words. There are certain key words that have great power when we read them, they will also generate pleasure in the reader. “you” “your” and “mine” the reader reads them as “I”, “me” and “my”. 8. Look for the opportunity to send nice messages with positive content, something that shows you care. It’s interesting how Twitter is declining because it’s all about ME! 9. Be careful with attachments. Again so much of our communication is on the mobile and it is more difficult to read attachments this way. 10. Don’t ‘cc’. If there is not an essential need to know, don’t waste other people’s time by copying them.

Town Centre Talking Festivals and all that jazz - making 2016 special in Cheltenham Cheltenham is famous for its festivals and, if the start of 2016 is anything to go by, this is going to be the best year yet. After record attendances at The Festival - or Race Week as Cheltonians call it - the first of Cheltenham Festivals’ four events had something to live up to. Cheltenham Jazz Festival did just that. It wasn’t just the big names like Jamie Cullum or the increase in ticket sales to almost 28,000 that led festival director Ian George to describe it as their most successful yet. There was the added bonus of the new ‘…around town’ programme, which saw free acts in places like the Brewery Quarter and Cambray Place, busking across the town centre and the Free Stage in Montpelier Gardens itself. I’ve been saying for years that the Festivals needed to spread its events across the town. Montpellier Gardens and its tents make the perfect base but the rest of Cheltenham has always had areas and buildings that offer something different. I thought the decision to withdraw Literature Festival events from the Everyman Theatre was misguided as it Page 8

provided the perfect arena for many visiting authors. So full marks to Festivals chief executive Louise Emerson and her team for ‘…around town’, which I experienced first-hand on the Sunday. Outside the former Beechwood shopping centre, I came across a double-bass player and guitarist busking who wouldn’t have been out of place in a concert hall. But it was Cambray Place where I was headed and this Sunday lunchtime session really summed up the vibe I was hoping for from ‘… around town’. The audience was a mixture of those who had come specially to see a particular act, people having a drink outside Wild Beer and Tailors and - best of all passers-by who had no idea the music was playing. The highlight for me was the Chris Read Quintet, washed down with two-thirds of a pint from Wild Beer (yes, they serve their ales that way and when it has a strength of 6%, that actually makes sense). The Festivals hope that those passers-by will come back for more and I hope that the continuation of ‘…around town’ will have spin-offs for businesses

of all kinds across Cheltenham. We’ll look to enhance this further with the projects we have planned now that Cheltenham’s Business Improvement District (BID) has been approved. I was delighted that some 72% of those who took part in the ballot to set up the business-led, business-funded scheme were in favour. One of our priorities will be to have more town centre events in places just like Cambray Place. We want to open up all parts of the BID area across the calendar year to the benefits events can bring. Over the next couple of months, we’ll be working to set up the BID company and recruiting the board of directors who will lead it on behalf of more than 600 businesses. Everything gets under way for real on August 1 - yet another reason why 2016 looks like being a special year for Cheltenham. - by Kevan Blackadder, Town Centre Manager

Joules Pizzeria, Bar and Restaurant is situated in the heart of Cheltenham overlooking the quiet and beautiful Clarence Square. We arrived on a lovely sunny evening and found Joules to have a fantastic terrace which is set back from the road and caught the last of the evening sunshine. This is where we enjoyed a pre-dinner drink before heading inside to a modern, comfortable interior. The menu is Italian inspired with wonderful pizzas made using freshly stretched dough which is then cooked in the pizza oven. There is also a large selection of pasta, grills and fresh fish dishes - including the Seafood Platter which looks exquisite and would be ideally complimented by a glass of prosecco. I caught up with South African Chef Ben, who is very passionate about his food. All the ingredients are sourced locally wherever possible with meat supplied by Master Butchers ‘The Gloucester Sausage Company’. The steaks are aged for at least 28 days to give a fantastic depth of flavour. The diverse range of home-made burgers on the menu can be mixed and matched with any fillings you desire. The meats are minced on-site using prime cuts to ensure your meal remains as freshly prepared as possible. Choices include a Wild boar and Venison which the table next to ours had

ordered and they smelt and looked amazing! We ordered the succulent 10oz sirloin steak and the mouthwatering, slow braised BBQ spare ribs. The portions were generous indeed, the quality outstanding and certainly good value for money. The manager, Scott, and his team were very welcoming and efficient in looking after all the diners whilst creating a relaxing, laid back atmosphere. To compliment our meal, Scott suggested a Rioja Reserva which was perfect and very reasonably priced. We finished off with a Tiramisu to share and two huge frothy cappuccinos. My friend and I had a great evening at Joules and we were both amazed that such a gem of a restaurant had escaped our attention for so long, do give it a try as I am sure you will not be disappointed!

Steak Night offer Thursday Steak Night 8oz Rump steak with all the trimmings, a glass of house red or white wine (175ml) or a pint of beer or lager and a dessert

for just £18.95.

Golden Years

Memories of 50 Years Ago by Ted Bruning

I’ve just found my cheque book. It wasn’t easy because the last time I used it was in July, when I bought a car, and in fact the last time I used it before then was Christmas 2013 when I ran out of ideas for presents and gave my kids cheques instead. Oh, and in my pocket I have £1.56... What does all this have to do with anything? Well, on 29th June 1966, Barclay’s Bank launched Britain’s first credit card (the Barclaycard, since you ask), and money as I and others of my vintage once knew it has been dying ever since. The credit card and its contemporary, the charge card, were responses to the illusion that cash and money was the same thing. Despite the fact that the Lombards had disproved the idea centuries earlier by providing international credit facilities in which limitless sums could be moved around without anyone so much as sniffing a ducat, people in the post-War age still had to carry cash to cover all their spending. And in post-War America, spending was getting more and more extravagant. One of the luxuries the newlyrich post-War Americans were starting to spend more and more Page 14

lavishly on was dining out; and the first charge card, Diner’s Club, enabled them to do just that. If you didn’t customarily carry enough cash to pay for a blow-out for yourself and all your friends – or for yourself and that one special friend – and provided you had a fat enough salary, all you had to do was pay an annual fee and your card would cover the bill at any participating restaurant. It wasn’t credit, though – the balance had to be cleared in full every month. Diner’s Club launched with 200 members and 27 participating restaurants; by the end of the year it had 20,000 members and other high-value retailers were clamouring to be allowed in. Finders Services, launched in Britain in 1951, was a straightforward copy; it was swallowed up by Diners Club in 1962, and in 1963 American Express, another charge card operation, arrived in the UK too. (Barclaycard also had an American connection: it was a franchisee of the Bank of America’s BankAmericard scheme, later rebranded as Visa). At first, Barclaycard and its rivals were similar in operation: since extended credit was illegal in Britain until 1968 you had to clear your Barclaycard every month, just as with Diners Club and American Express. But it was always intended to be more democratic than the charge cards, which were aimed at the well-off and the prestige trades. It didn’t charge a fee, for a start; there was no salary

qualification but there was a credit limit; and given Barclay’s established position in the UK it was accepted by a much, much greater number and variety of retailers. Without going into too much detail, here’s how plastic has fared in those 50 years. 1969: the cheque card arrives. 1972: the Access credit card is a co-operative of several banks. 1987: the debit card is born. 1995: debit card transactions exceed credit card transactions. 1998: debit card transactions exceed cheque transactions. 2004: plastic overtakes cash. One could go on, but you get the picture. Plastic rules. Which raises a question I’m qualified to ask but not answer? What exactly is money? It’s clearly not the pennies like cartwheels I took to the sweetshop as a child. It’s not a fistful of fivers, either: a fiver isn’t really a fiver at all; it’s just a picture of a fiver. Money as a reflection of itself? It’s no more ephemeral a concept than money as a seemingly endless chain of electronic ones and zeroes. And if money doesn’t really exist, why can’t I have more of it?

Cake and Bake Cheese, Onion & Pepper Quiche This rich and creamy quiche can be served warm with new potatoes and coleslaw for a filling supper, but is just as tasty served cold as part of a picnic, packed lunch or summer buffet.

Ingredients: • 250g shortcrust pastry • 1 tbsp olive oil • 1 onion, peeled and very finely chopped • 4 large eggs • 200ml crème fraiche • 150ml double cream • Large pinch of grated nutmeg • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 75g mature Cheddar cheese, grated • 25g Gruyere cheese, grated • 1 red pepper, deseeded and sliced

Serves 6 - 8 Ready in 1 hour 40 mins

TIP

You can freeze this quiche for up to 2 months. Allow to cool completely then wrap either the whole quiche or individual slices in foil. Page 16

1. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface

and use to line a 20cm fluted loose based flan tin (it should be at least 4cm deep). Trim off the excess pastry and prick the base all over with a fork. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.

2. Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan/Gas 6.

Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up. Line the chilled pastry case with baking paper and baking beans. Place the flan tin on the baking sheet in the oven and bake blind for 15 minutes. Remove the paper and beans and bake for a further 5-6 minutes until the pastry is crisp and pale golden. Reduce the oven temperature to 190C/170C fan/Gas 5.

3. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a frying pan and fry

the chopped onion for 8-10 minutes until very soft. Drain on kitchen paper. Whisk the eggs in large jug then whisk in the crème fraiche and double cream. Add the nutmeg and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

4. Spread the fried onions in the pastry case and scatter over the Cheddar cheese. Gently pour in the egg mixture and top with the pepper slices. Scatter over the Gruyere cheese. Bake for 25-35 minutes or until the filling is set and golden brown. Serve warm or cold.

THE OX

cheltenham

The Ox is a bastion of simple, top-notch, British Fayre cooked to impeccable standards and is wonderfully located in the very centre of Cheltenham. It already has an incredible reputation for serving mind-blowing, delicious steaks cooked to perfection in their charcoal Josper oven which creates a real depth of flavour. Whilst beautifully aged British steak is at the heart of The Ox, their exceptional chefs also produce fresh fish and vegetarian dishes. The Ox has a range of stunning small plates, classic charcuterie and superb seasonal side dishes, all finished off with either a sweet

and sticky indulgent pudding or an unrivalled selection of local British and continental cheeses. The service is warm and welcoming, just what you need after a long hard day. The Ox is also ideal for business lunches as they offer an express lunch menu from Wednesday to Saturday. Their brunch menu is available at the weekends from 10am and the Sunday roasts are arguably the best you will ever taste. Their Early Bird Deal is also certainly worth a mention. Picture the scene - you've just finished work and are in need of a little escapism. For just ÂŁ14 you can indulge in rump

steak, fries, sauce and a glass of wine! Why not take your own favourite bottle of wine with you on a Tuesday for something a little different. With the finer weather of late the team behind the bar have been concocting some summer-inspired cocktails to be enjoyed on the (fingers crossed) sunny terrace to compliment a bite from the Terrace menu. I really can't express how impressed I was when I dined at The Ox, I've already made plans to revisit. Written by Harriet Court from Glos Directories

Tackling Troublesome Weeds by Pippa Greenwood Why is it that weeds always seem to grow faster and more vigorously than pretty well anything you actually choose to plant in your garden? Top of my weed hate list is hairy bittercress (Cardamine hirsuta), which produces a little rosette of leaves topped with a short spike with tiny white flowers, and I despise it because it spreads so quickly. Weeds are typically described as ‘any plant which is growing in the wrong place’ such as your flowerbeds, your vegetable garden, your shrubbery or your lawn. So what makes weeds such a nuisance? • They feed and take up moisture in great quantities and sometimes compete actively with nearby garden plants. • They can create shade and stunt the growth of nearby plants. • Those with a ground-cover like effect can cause the growth of garden plants to be distorted or held back. • Weeds may harbour pests or diseases. So what can you do to try to minimise the problems they cause without spending hours with a hoe or sprayer? • Get on top of weeds early in the year - removing as many as possible before your garden plants start to grow Page 20

• •

strongly makes weeding easier and cuts down on the amount of competition the weeds cause. A hoe is one of the quickest ways to effectively kill off most annual weeds, but it needs to be a good one. Disturb the soil as little as possible when you weed to prevent dormant weed seeds from germinating. Some people avoid anything other than an early weeding and a late weeding, as they find that regular weeding seems to bring more seeds to the surface and encourages germination. Remove your weeds before they set seed. Avoid composting any weeds which are setting seed, have set seed or have particularly pernicious and resilient roots (dock and dandelion are classic examples of these). When removing deep-rooted weeds such as dock and dandelion, always make sure that you take out every fragment of root, as each piece left behind has the potential to form a new plant. The best tool I know for removing dandelion roots is my little red-handled weeder, see www.pippagreenwood. com/products/good-growing for more information. Don’t take a short cut by rotovating ground which is

heavily infested with weeds such as dandelions, docks, nettles or couch grass, as you’ll be chopping up their roots and helping to create more plants! • If you want to sow annuals or vegetable crops directly and minimise later problems with weeds, then try the stale seedbed technique. Prepare the area you intend to sow well in advance of your proposed seed sowing date, which allows dormant weed seeds to germinate; remove the weed seedlings and then sow or plant up as you wish. This should give you fewer problems later on. • Many weeds can be kept at bay if you cover the soil surface with two to three inches (5 – 7.5 cm) of mulch. • Use weedkillers with caution and ensure you choose one appropriate for the problem you have. Weedkillers are designed to kill off plants and they can do a lot of damage if allowed to contaminate your garden. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for a really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items including SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, ladybirds to control greenfly, Nemaslug, biological controls, pop-up crop covers, signed books and lots more besides.

fully, if you heap cover.

Q. What if I’m a nontaxpayer who doesn’t have £1,060 to pass across? It still works, it’s just a bit more complex if the nontaxpayer is earning just under the £10,600 threshold. This is because you have to transfer £1,060 of your allowance to take advantage – nothing more, nothing less.

That lowers her allowance to £9,540, but she earns £10,000 so she’ll pay basic 20% tax on the £440 – meaning she is £88 worse off. Overall, though they’re still up over £100. If you don’t get the maths, don’t worry, you’re always collectively up by doing this, so if you’re a non-taxpayer, even close to the limit it’s still worth applying.

So let’s do another example. Suppose Fred is a basic rate taxpayer married to Wilma who earns £10,000 a year, so she’s only got £600 left of her tax free allowance. She can still move £1,060 to Fred, so he gains £212 on that amount.

Chalk Talk My views on the EU come down to a tussle between head and heart. My heart says leave. On the issue of sovereignty I have long deplored the steady erosion of British powers. Large areas of our lives are now subject to laws that in practice we cannot change. They are devised by an EU Commission we did not elect, and enforced by a European Court which even our most senior judges cannot overrule. So my heart wants my children to grow up in a free country where they can elect people who actually have the power to change things, and kick them out when they have failed. But my head tells me it’s not that simple. First, the economy. Brexit will likely lead to a tortuous renegotiation of our trading relationship with the EU. Scorned Eurocrats can be expected to give no quarter; they’ll want to make Brexit as painful as possible. And how long would it all take? Canada’s deal took seven years. Throughout this delay, jobs and investment in

RNLI.org

Gloucestershire would be put at risk by uncertainty as global businesses weigh up whether to choose the UK as a place to invest. That’s instability we cannot afford. Second, immigration. I doubt we would be any better off. Take Norway, which is outside the EU. Norway has access to the single market, but the price has been accepting all its rules, including paying contributions and allowing free movement of people. Switzerland too, also outside the EU, has higher levels of net EU migration per head than we do. So it’s unlikely it would make very much difference to immigration either. Third, constitutional instability. Brexit would almost certainly lead to a second referendum on Scottish independence. For those of us who believe passionately in the integrity of our United Kingdom, a country that is a force in the world and continues to carry influence, not least through its permanent membership of the UN Security Council, this would be a disaster.

Fourth, security. Our friends across the world, from the US to Australia to New Zealand (who share intelligence with us by the way) are clamouring for us to stay. The one leader who would be guaranteed to cheer Brexit is Putin. Let me be clear: I have no love for Brussels. I only care about what is right for our country. But after careful thought my conclusion is that the risks to jobs, security, and the integrity of our United Kingdom are just too great. On balance, I think we need to hold our nose and stay. - by Alex Chalk

Home & Interiors Outdoor Living

By Katherine Sorrell

consulting a professional, who will undoubtedly come up with practical solutions and inspirational ideas you would never have thought of.

Longer days mean it’s time to head out to the garden. However large or small your outside space, some careful planning will ensure that it is flexible enough for playing games, entertaining or simply putting your feet up and relaxing, writes Katherine Sorrell Today’s gardens are more like an outdoor room, used for playing, cooking, socialising and resting; they are multifunctional spaces that look good but also work hard for every member of the family. If your garden is in need of an update, the secret is in the planning - how will you use the space and what do you want from it? Sketch a plan of your garden on graph paper, and gather samples of the materials you intend to use – such as slate, willow or terracotta – to ensure that they coordinate. If in doubt, consider Page 36

In a large garden, the ideal layout includes separate areas for dining, relaxing and playing – perhaps with a ‘secret’ children’s area at the far end, including structures such as a swing, trampoline, climbing frame or tepee. A peaceful area away from both the house and the kids is ideal for a hammock or a deck chair – perhaps near some scented flowers or under a tree for shade. And the dining area is best closest to the house, with space nearby for a barbecue or even an outdoor kitchen. Consider changes in levels – they add interest and are easier to deal with than slopes, but avoid lots of steps between the door and the dining table. Flooring is key, too - will you choose stone slabs, gravel, bricks, decking, wood chips or perhaps tiles that complement your kitchen flooring for an inside-outside look? Just like indoors, your choice of garden flooring can signal a change from one area to another. It is also a question of practicality and cost: specify stone slabs for the dining area, for example, and save money with woodchips in the children’s play area. Verticals are just as important, providing privacy, screening and dividing, adding visual

interest and offering places for climbers to grow. Think about fences, hedges, walls, arches, arbours and pergolas – a simple metal archway over a path entwined with fragrant honeysuckle makes a lovely focal point, while a small wooden pergola can link two different areas of the garden and offer a shady spot to sit in. Finally, furniture. Consider waterproof upholstery, outdoor sofas and all-weather rattan, choosing designs and colourways that link with the whole space. You can even accessorise outdoor sofas with scatter cushions and interior throws or blankets for when it gets chilly. If space is restricted, opt for folding furniture and play equipment that can be put away, or build seating into your hard landscaping – an extra-wide low wall makes a great bench seat and you can even build in hinged storage for cushions. The time is right to start planning your stunning summer garden, and creating more useable space outdoors is far more economical than a new basement or roof conversion – in fact, turning outdoor space into an extra outdoor room may add value to your property. Cotswolds Ghost Tours currently offer 3r TOU NE d& R X private and scheduled spooky walks in T Prestbury and Cheltenham with a new 4t DAT h Cotswolds location launching in late 2016, of ES Ju and more locations to come! ne Prestbury is allegedly England’s most haunted village, and with an intense history it’s no wonder there’s so many spooks! The most famous, the Black Abbott, relates to the village’s ecclesiastical past as the location of a house belonging to Llanthony Priory. The village’s proximity to Cheltenham Racecourse may also explain the ghostly horses occasionally seen galloping along the Burgage - the rider of one appears to have been shot and buried nearby. Cheltenham has a few secrets behind it’s Regency facades too including one of the suspects in the Jack the Ripper case, and a murderous butler who was taunted by the young lady of the house so did away with her in the garden pool! Our guides are all professionally qualified and are the only Blue Badge Tourist Guides in the region providing scheduled ghost walks to the public. The Cotswolds is ripe for ghost hunters so check out our website (www.cotswoldsghosttours.co.uk) or contact us on info@cotswoldsghosttours.co.uk and join one of our upcoming public tours or book a private walk for your special event.

33rd annual Tewkesbury Medieval Festival Just as they did in 1471, the roar of canon, the clash of swords, and the shouts of fighting men will echo over the Tewkesbury Battle Field, as the 33rd annual Tewkesbury Medieval Festival takes place on July 9th/10th.

characters including a doctor surgeon with bloody tales of medieval medicine, a dancing bear, and it is rumoured, dragons, will be found around the field. Children can enjoy learning simple circus skills, or taking part in historically themed arts and crafts in the Bright Knight Tent or a quiet break at the magical Story Tellers Garden.

When they are not fighting many of several thousand re-enactors and their families will live for the weekend in living history camps where you are welcome to visit them.

This year, we have a visit from Mad Cap Theatre who will be performing at various sites. The large beer tent with its wide range of real beers and ales, and for a real taste of history, mead, will have live music all day, and possibly a visit from the lovely gypsy dancers. Hunger pangs can be taken care of by a wide range of caterers.

Even Plantagenet King Edward, and his rival for the throne, Queen Margaret of Anjou, welcome visitors to their sumptuous camps. Away from the battle site there is a big and bustling medieval market, full of leather, metal and wood workers, costumiers, jewellers, potters and sellers of all kinds of exotic and unusual goods. Minstrels, jesters, stilt walkers and

Entrance to the festival is free, with a small charge for parking, but please be as generous as you can to the bucket collectors, putting on an event like this is expensive, but we want everyone to be able to join in.

Saturday the fun moves into town, for a very tongue in cheek re-creation of the capture, trial and beheadings of the fleeing Lancastrians.

This is followed by the peaceful service of Complin, held by candlelight in the beautiful Abbey. Sunday sees our large Carnival style parade make its way up the High Street and Church Street on its way to the festival site, starting at 11.15am. Tewkesbury is about 2miles from junction 9 of the M5 and the festival site is signed from all major entrances to the town, please follow the signed route, it has been designed with safety in mind. For further details, including accommodation and our own camp site, just a few minutes walk from the event, visit our web site www.Tewkesbury MedievalFestival.org.

The festival opens at 11am both days, with battles at 4pm on Saturday and 3pm on Sunday. When it closes at 6pm on

Books for Dad Struggling for inspiration this Father’s Day? Forget gift vouchers and gardening tools, books are the way to go. Whether Dad likes escaping into a thriller, getting creative with the kids, or cooking up a storm in the kitchen, there’s sure to be something in our selection to keep him happy. Conspiracy – Iain Gale Bernard Cornwell fans will thank you for introducing them to Iain Gale’s series about a maverick soldier in the Peninsular War. James Keane certainly gets himself in enough scrapes and mishaps to keep the reader entertained. Wellresearched, gritty and colourful, the series brings a period of military history to life. The latest novel, Conspiracy, sees Keane ordered by Wellington to work undercover in Paris – a dangerous task indeed in such a turbulent political landscape. 50 Evening Adventures – Tim, Kerry, Ella and Amy Meek Another great resource for tackling the ‘I’m bored’ mantra, 50 Evening Adventures provides a plethora of ideas for making the most of evenings as a family. There are suggestions for places to go, things to do and meals to cook outside. Former teachers Tim and Kerry Meek are currently travelling around Europe in a caravan with their daughters. They’re used to packing lightly, so most of the suggestions don’t need any special equipment, and can be carried out for free, or very cheaply. Page 40

The Hairy Bikers Blood, Sweat and Tyres: The Autobiography – Dave Myers and Si King If Dad enjoys an autobiography, this is the perfect book to wrap up for him this Father’s Day. The duo didn’t have the easiest childhoods; Si was bullied about his weight, while Dave had to grow up quickly as a carer for his mother. But a love of good food and entertaining brought them together and made them household names. Warm, honest and laughout -loud funny, it’s a great testament to what true friends can do when they put their minds to it. Poor Boy Road – James L. Weaver Fast-paced and gripping from the first page, Poor Boy Road is a good bet for fans of action thrillers. Jake Caldwell is a mob-enforcer who’s looking for a way out. When he’s called back to his childhood town to help care for his dying, abusive father, his boss hands him one last job – kill a local drug dealer. But can he do it? Great characters, believable dialogue and plenty of action combine to make this a real page-turner.

The Den Book – Fiona Danks and Jo Schofield Packed with creative inspiration, The Den Book is full of ideas to encourage Dad to get outside and have fun with the kids (or grandkids). Whether they want a forest hideaway, a fairy tent or a full-on fort, instructions are easy to follow, and many of the dens don’t require any special materials. Published by Frances Lincoln, it costs £12.99, so you should have enough funds left over to invest in some tarpaulin and twine. More Home Comforts – James Martin Aspiring chefs and good honest cooks alike will enjoy this book. As the name implies, it’s packed with ideas for tasty, honest comfort food. Recipes are straightforward, with each step well explained. Most ingredients can be easily picked up at the supermarket, although a few will require a bit more forward planning. More than 100 recipes are included, many of which have been shown in the TV series. Dad will soon be whipping you up Beer Can Piri Piri Chicken, Lamb Belly with BBQ Sauce & Pickled Red Onion, or just some good old chocolate brownies.

COUNCILLORS CORNER Less than a fortnight into my new life as a Borough Councillor for Charlton Kings I find myself writing an article in the Cheltenham Magazine. Mayor Making is my first opportunity to wear official robes as Cllr Chris Ryder (Warden Hill) is inaugurated as Cheltenham Mayor in the Town Hall. I am one of six new councillors, and we are all discovering there is a lot to learn – not least how to find our way around the Municipal Offices – and IT training is important so that we can all operate in a more sustainable and paperless way. The paperwork for just one Planning Meeting can easily run to more than 100 pages per councillor otherwise. I will clearly spend a lot of time reading! But I am also out and about meeting people. I have already looked at overhanging trees, blocked gullies and places where
