I learnt very quickly to politely decline more often than not!

It makes me feel old now to remember my first experiences of central heating. My mates were embarking on a six-week summer holiday at the end of the school term and much to their amusement, at the tender age of 16, I joined British Gas South Western (as it was known then) as a gas apprentice. At the time John Major was the Prime Minister, Jimmy Nail was at the top of the music charts with ‘Ain’t no doubt’, Wayne’s World was at the cinema and the first-generation Ford Mondeo was launched! Yes folks, I’m no spring chicken! My abiding memory of the first day was the highly developed technique engineers had of consuming hot beverages in every property they visited. Eight cups of tea on my first day, each with 2 sugars, was in fact a conservative effort compared to the seasoned professionals! As I sat on the passenger seat, above the somewhat unpredictable suspension of my engineer’s Austin Maestro van during a very long journey home from the Cotswolds,

Over the past 26 years, I have seen some astounding changes in the heating industry. Gas boilers have changed from cast iron lumps with rudimentary controls to stylish, sophisticated machines with a plethora of accessories. I left British Gas after 10 years and worked for Worcester Bosch followed by Vaillant Group and latterly Ideal Boilers as a subcontractor. It was at this point I realised there was a gap in the market for a business offering all the expertise of the big organisations without the ‘big’ price tag. Red Panda Heating was born! We provide expert fault diagnostics, servicing and installation of all gas appliances, central heating systems, hot water systems, oil boilers and renewable technology. Our first employee, Matt Bygrave joined us following 18 years’ experience with British Gas, giving us an impressive combined 44 years knowledge between the two of us. We offer the customer service I remember from my early experiences in the industry, where the quality of workmanship and the customer experience was paramount. For example, you might think a boiler service is ‘standard’, regardless of which Gas Safe business completes it for you. Sadly, this is not the case! The consumer champion Which? recently published a report highlighting the vast differences between boiler services from

different businesses and, in fact, only a very small minority completed all the checks required. A boiler service takes us on average 90 minutes and I would challenge anyone to find a more comprehensive and reassuring process. We know that a service is our opportunity to ensure the boiler meets all the safety standards whilst pre-empting any future problems. Every boiler is set up as per the manufacturer’s instructions and we will advise you of any recommendations without any pressure at all for you to proceed. Every customer receives a fully comprehensive service report and if your boiler requires it, we will validate the warranty for the following year. Due to our vast experience, we are approved by numerous boiler brands and can offer preferential warranties due to our unique relationships. In 2016 we introduced an online booking tool enabling customers to select their own service appointments, with no charge until the job is complete. We narrow the arrival time to just 2 hours and can phone 30 minutes before, leaving you to get on with the more important things in life!

Cake and Bake Banana and Walnut Loaf If you have overripe bananas in the fruit bowl then don’t bin them – just whizz up this delicious moist loaf cake instead. It will keep for up to 5 days wrapped in greaseproof paper or foil and stored in an airtight tin.

Ingredients: • 175g unsalted butter, softened • 175g light soft brown sugar • 225g self-raising flour • 2 tsp ground mixed spice • ½ tsp baking powder • 3 medium eggs • 75g walnut halves, roughly chopped • 2 large ripe bananas, peeled and mashed with 2 tsp lemon juice • Icing sugar, to dust

Makes 10 Slices Ready in 1 hour 45 minutes, plus cooling time Page 8

1.

Preheat the oven to 170C, Fan 150C, Gas 3. Grease and line the base and the two long sides of a 900g loaf tin with baking paper.

2.

Place the butter, sugar, flour, spice, baking powder and eggs in a large bowl and beat with an electric whisk until thoroughly combined - this will take about 4-5 minutes. Fold in the walnuts and mashed bananas.

3.

Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and level the surface. Bake for 1hour - 1 hour 15 minutes until risen and golden and a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean.

4.

Leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes then turn out onto a cooling rack and cool completely. Dust thickly with icing sugar.

TIP Add a creamy soft frosting instead of the dusting of icing sugar, if liked. Simply beat 100g full-fat soft cheese with 100g very soft unsalted butter until smooth, then beat in 100g sifted icing sugar.

Return to Broadway On Good Friday 30th March, the first passenger train since 1960 will draw into Broadway station. This will be a celebration of forty years' hard work by volunteers and supporters of the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway who have been re-laying track and building stations from Cheltenham Racecourse station along the route of the former GWR main line to Birmingham. As the photographs show, not only has new track been laid to reach Broadway, but there a replica station has been built from scratch; another testament to the hard work and enthusiasm of hundreds of volunteers. To mark this milestone, I have delved into the archives to discover an account in the Cheltenham Chronicle of the original opening of the line into Cheltenham on 1st August 1906. “8.05am and 8.51am ought to be figures easily remembered in connection with the full opening of the Honeybourne branch, for they are the times in the morning at which the first train ran out of St James'-square Cheltenham, and of the one that came into it. Precisely to time, rail motor-car No.69, with trailer No.6, departed without any ceremony. There were six passengers – three for Bishop's Cleeve, two for Gotherington, and one for Winchcombe. The first train in, No.65 car with No.24 trailer, brought in a goodly freight of 51 passengers, about a dozen of whom came from Evesham, and all were through bookings. It was found that one lady

Broadway station soon after its opening in 1904. It was still unfinished; note the pile of gravel on the platform (Ian Crowder: GWSR) who wanted to go to Birmingham had got into this car by mistake, and was sent back by the next car to Honeybourne for her connecting train. It is interesting to note that Mr R.E. Steel, solicitor of Cheltenham, who was one of the first passengers by the in-train, was also a first passenger from Cheltenham when the Banbury line was opened [1881], and through the Seven Tunnel [1886]. The bookings by the second out-train, at 10.01am, numbered 18, Bishop's Cleeve taking three, Bretforton one, Campden two, Gotherington three, Honeybourne six, Stratford one, and Winchcombe two. Two rail motors will for the present work the traffic. The one, starting from Cheltenham at 8.05am will run via Honeybourne to Moreton in Marsh and return and do a journey to and from Evesham and finish up with a return one to Honeybourne, ending at Cheltenham at 7.18pm. The other car will run chiefly between Evesham and

The magnificent replica station nearing completion when this article was written (Ian Crowder: GWSR) Page 10

Cheltenham, via Honeybourne, doing four journeys, the first being at 7.33am and the fourth ending at 9.51pm. There will be two goods trains each way between Honeybourne and Gloucester. From four to four and a half hours are allowed for each journey, including calls and stops at the several stations.” Interestingly none of these early passengers either came from or travelled to Broadway! But the Gloucester Citizen showed itself already to be alive to the tourist potential. On the opening of the line it commented: “The new line passes through a district rich in picturesque scenery and historic interest. The pretty village of Broadway affords many pleasant examples of stone-built houses with quaint decorative qualities.” From the end of this month, you too will be able to travel there by train to enjoy the picturesque scenery and the pretty village.

Home & Interiors Spring Clean with Style

By Katherine Sorrell

Sweep, brush, wash and scrub. When spring sunlight shows up the corners of your home that need attention, it’s time to pop on your pinny and get to work. And cleaning is so much more enjoyable when the tools you use are both efficient and good-looking.

Tips for efficienT cleaning • For a proper fresh start, begin by tidying all the mess that has built up over the last year. Sort it out into piles of rubbish, things to give away, stuff that needs mending and everything else that needs to find a rightful home. Ta da! You have created much more space in your home and plenty of room to get cleaning. • Be prepared. Work out what jobs you are going to tackle, wear appropriate clothing and gather together all the necessary tools and products. A spacious caddy will come in very handy. • Divide tasks into five key areas: vacuuming, dusting, mopping/ scrubbing, washing and wiping, and polishing. Don’t forget specific jobs such as turning mattresses, spot-cleaning upholstery, cleaning the oven, defrosting the fridge, descaling the shower head and beating rugs. You may also get super-organised and add in those less frequent tasks such as steam-cleaning the carpets or having the chimney swept. • Your basic principles of cleaning should be to work from top to bottom and tackle dry chores before wet ones. Decide whether to do one room at a time or one task at a time throughout the whole house. Put some music on and enjoy the process – your home will be gleaming before you know it. Page 12

Cheltenham Speakers’ Club runs ‘Women in Leadership’ evening

Grumman Corporation, had a clear message about facing challenges head on, regardless of how daunting they may seem.

From left to right: Katherine Sealy - Commercial Director at Northrop Grumman Corporation UK; Sam Kadiyali - Director at PR company Target Group; Jennie Goodrum - President of Cheltenham Toastmasters Club; and Nicky Godding - Business and Retail Editor for the Business & Innovation Magazine On 30th January Cheltenham Speakers’ Club, part of Toastmasters International, held a specially themed event promoting ‘Women in Leadership’. The organisation focuses on building members’ communication and leadership skills. The evening involved inviting three women in prominent business positions to be guest speakers and share their experiences, thoughts and insight as women in leadership. The meeting kicked off in true Toastmaster format with a brief introduction to orientate members and visitors, then an impromptu speaking session. Members of the audience were called at random to speak ‘off the cuff’ on an unknown topic for 1-2 minutes. The evenings’ questions included: ‘Which woman in your life has been most influential?’ and ‘How

Page 16

do you feel that men vs women differ in leadership roles?’ with some funny, albeit diplomatic answers from the male speakers invited up to speak. After a short break came the guests' prepared speeches. First to speak was Nicky Godding, Business and Retail Editor of Business & Innovation Magazine, who provided the audience with statistical evidence showing that boards of directors across all sectors with a percentage of women on the board significantly outperform boards without female representation. Up next was Sam Kandiyali, Director at PR company Target Group, who shared with the group how invaluable requesting feedback from her peers had been early on in her career in helping her become the effective leader she is today. Katharine Sealy, Commercial Director at Northrop

The evening finished with a panel discussion that gave the audience a chance to ask some of their burning questions about the speakers’ experiences as women in leadership roles, the advantages and potential disadvantages of being a woman in a leadership role and how others perceived them. The evening was well attended by Cheltenham Speakers’ Club members and visitors who had arrived through announcements via social media outlets Meetup and Facebook. Jennie Goodrum, Club President, was delighted with the success of the event and had this to say: “It was fascinating to hear about the speakers’ experiences as women in leadership roles in 2018. The event was clearly enjoyed by members and visitors alike, who found it an interesting, engaging and informative evening.” Cheltenham Speakers’ Club meets at 7.15pm every first and third Tuesday of the month in the upstairs room at The Exmouth Arms pub on Bath Road, Cheltenham. Get Your Soil into Shape by Pippa Greenwood

A fundamental garden need is good quality soil; it is key to bigger flowers and heavier crops. And there is still time to shape up your soil before the gardening season really begins in earnest. Frosty weather can be useful, as it can save work with heavy clay soil. If you roughly dig or fork it over, the frost will act on the large lumps of clay and break them down somewhat, making them more manageable. Most soils can become badly compacted if you walk or stand on them when they are very wet, especially if the soil is clay or slightly heavy loam. If you can’t avoid walking on wet soil, use a few boards or planks as walkways to spread the load and reduce damage. Forking a heavy soil rather than digging with a spade will reduce compaction, but either way the soil surface usually ends up pretty lumpy. Re-forking, breaking up the large lumps, followed by a final raking will help you get closer to that ‘fine tilth’ often described in gardening books. Adding bulky organic matter such as leaf mould, well-rotted manure or garden compost helps feed the soil naturally Page 18

and improves its texture, so that it holds the right amount of moisture for as long as possible – and there is still time to fork this in now. Create free organic matter by making a compost heap or bin, and turn autumn leaves into lead mould, a wonderful soil conditioner. Incorporating some horticultural grade grit or gravel will also help to improve the texture and performance of a heavy clay soil. Avoid builders’ gravel or grit – it can damage or kill garden plants. If you have lots of small stones or larger lumps of flint in your soil, remove them before planting your flowers and vegetables. Some stones are good, but even a lightly stony soil can result in forked or deformed root vegetables. Alternatively, invest in raised beds and fill them with stonefree soil. Manure adds both texture and food for your plants. It should be good quality, with few additives, and free from weeds, especially troublesome ones like nettles, docks and couch grass. In recent years, manure contaminated by the weedkiller used to control weeds in pastureland has devastated plants. Try to buy from

someone local who you can trust to tell you what chemicals have been used. Manure must be well-rotted – ideally it should have sat in a heap for about two years. Green manures are a great way to feed and condition your soil, and help suppress weeds and protect the soil from wind erosion. They work especially well on parts of the garden where plants are not grown year round – as when you use a green manure, you sow seed, allow the plants to grow and then incorporate them into the soil to rot down. Sow seeds later this year – there are lots to choose from, including red clover, mustard, field beans, phaecelia and field lupins. Yes, there’s potentially a fair bit of work involved, but you don’t have to do everything suggested and anything you do will make a huge difference! Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com and you’ll find some great gardening things: ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ (where you receive your chosen garden-ready vegetable plants in the spring accompanied by weekly advice and tips from Pippa) plus Nemaslug, biocontrols, gardening tools, raised bed kits, Grower Frames, signed books and more!

Maggie’s provides free practical, emotional and social support to people with cancer ideas and ethos are very much alive in the 22 centres around the country today.

The idea for the Maggie’s charity came from a lady called Maggie Keswick Jencks in Edingburgh. Maggie was diagnosed with terminal cancer, and whilst she felt that the doctors who looked after her and the treatments she received were fantastic, she also felt that once diagnosed she had nowhere to go where she could have space and time to think, talk and get support. In 1996, the first Maggie’s centre was opened in Edinburgh. Sadly, Maggie (despite being involved in the design and planning of the centre) died shortly before the centre opened but her thoughts,

Maggie’s Cancer Care Centre in Cheltenham is a place people can go to for help and support with any of the problems or challenges that they face after a diagnosis of cancer. Under one roof, they can access cancer information from our Cancer Support Specialists (who have a nursing background), benefits advice and psycho-social support – either individually or within one of the many groups and courses we offer. These groups include a Men's club, fitness sessions, carers support courses, relaxation sessions and complementary therapies. A copy and explanation of our programme can be accessed via our website www.maggiescentres/cheltenham, our Facebook page (Cheltenham Maggies) or by coming to see us at the centre. You don’t have to make an appointment or be referred, just drop in! Everything we offer is free of charge, including the cups of tea and, of course, the cake! Come and meet our small professional team of Cancer Support Specialists, benefits advisors, psychologists and fundraisers. Maggie’s is not just about the person living with cancer but also about looking after those who

Page 22

love and support that person – be that a friend, partner, colleague, parent, child or carer. We know that carers can often feel as frightened and vulnerable as those living with the disease. Someone is diagnosed with cancer every two minutes, and it is estimated that by 2020 half of us will be affected by cancer at some point in our lives. In October, Maggie’s Cheltenham will celebrate its 8th birthday. To date we have welcomed over 60,000 people through our doors, 15,000 last year alone from across Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire. Maggie’s philosophy is ‘don’t lose the joy of living in the fear of dying’. If you know or hear of anyone who is living with or supporting someone with cancer, please do let them know about Maggie’s – everyone with cancer should get the support they deserve! For further information please call the centre on 01242 250611 or email Centre Head Sally Hayes on sally.hayes@maggiescentres.org.

Moving House with Children by Kate Duggan kateduggan.co.uk

The thought of leaving friends and going to a new school, coupled with the anxiety of the unknown, can make moving house very unsettling for children. Kate Duggan recently moved house with ten days’ notice. (She wouldn’t recommend it.) Here are some of her top tips for helping children to cope with a big move. InvolvIng your chIld If possible, take your child to see the new house before the move, and explore the area together. Involve them in small decisions: “Where do you think this should go?” “What colour shall we paint your room?” You could also let your child choose some wall decals for their bedroom and a new duvet cover or rug. That being said, they will want familiar items around them. The day before you move, help them to pack a suitcase with everything they’ll need for the next couple of days, including a favourite teddy, a book, a game and so on. Page 24

don’t stress about declutterIng While you may be desperate to declutter ahead of the move, your child may not cope with the extra pressure of giving up toys and clothes, even those that have been languishing in a cupboard for months. Don’t force them into getting rid of things if they don’t want to. You could suggest packing items that they’re not sure about into a box for the loft, with the agreement that you’ll both open it and sort through everything a few months after the move. MakIng faMIly tIMe When your to-do list is three feet long, it’s really difficult to carve out any quality time to spend with your family, but do try. Leaving the boxes for 20 minutes so you can play a board game can help to avoid a potential meltdown later on. All of you will benefit from getting away from the house for a couple of hours now and then, ideally for some fresh air and time to focus on each other.

talk to your chIld Explain why you’re moving house, whether it’s due to needing to pay less rent or because you’ve found a better area to live in. Talk about how your child is feeling about the move. What are they worried about, and what can you do to alleviate those worries? So, for example, if they’re worried about a new school, could you ask their teacher to help you arrange a playdate before your child starts at the school? If they’re upset about leaving friends, can you arrange meet-ups or Skype calls? Make tIMe for yourself Moving is stressful. And when you’re stressed, it’s very easy to lose your temper with the kids when they’re being particularly whingy or difficult. So try to take some time out to recharge your own batteries. You might find relaxation techniques useful, or just kicking back with a glass of wine and a film now and then may help.

Cheltenham Calendar 265,000 pints of Guinness, 120,000 bottles of wine and enough beer to make a grown man cry, all consumed within four short days - what am I talking about? The Cheltenham Races, of course! It's the busiest time of the year for our town and while people come from far and wide to swarm the high street after a long day of socialising, drinking and losing money on their four-legged friends, local residents tend to cower in their houses, waiting for things to calm down. The week starts with Champions Day on Tuesday 13th March, followed by a chance to dress up for Ladies Day on Wednesday. Thursday is Paddy’s Day, so grab your shamrock and Guinness leprechaun hat! All the big names will be racing and the atmosphere will get bigger and bigger over the week as things are leading up to the pinnacle of the festival – the Gold Cup Day, which will have you on the edge of your seat with its gripping back-to-back jump racing. The four-day event never fails to bring a buzz to Cheltenham, both inside and outside the racecourse. With the 25 races bringing in over £600 million in wagers, it has become one of the leading race events of the year, putting Cheltenham firmly on the equestrian map. It seems that my column this month will be twofold. It’s March, therefore the famous Cheltenham Festival has already dominated half of my monthly spiel – you can’t have

March without the sound of hoofs down the home straight! The other half of my space will be taken up by the incredible programme of events happening in Cheltenham this month. March seems to be the ideal month to head out to an event...

I Lie To You?’ studio for a bit of quality catch up time, and Cheltenham is invited. This exclusive run of three shows between the 19th and the 22nd acts as a warm-up before their UK tour and will be jam-packed with never seen or heard before material.

If there aren't already enough famous names crammed into race week, how does Bill Bailey sound to you? He is kicking off the month with his loveable shenanigans of musical comedy at the Town Hall on the 5th and 6th.

On the 25th, a celebrity of our own comes back to Cheltenham - Tweedy returns to the Everyman with his very own solo show. You may have seen him before starring in the pantomime or in Giffords Circus, in which he is always the star of the show, but now you can bask in the glory of a whole helping of Tweedy.

Big names are also being mentioned in the theatre world as David Haig brings his new production of 'Pressure' to the Cheltenham Everyman Theatre from the 6th to the 10th. With rave reviews from every newspaper and reviewer, this raw and gritty classic is not to be missed!

There is just enough time to squeeze in one last familiar face with Sarah Millican, who will be performing at the Town Hall on the 28th of March. Her cheeky jokes and absurd topics, which range from farting in hospital pants to what can happen at a bra fitting, are not to be missed!

Katherine Ryan follows Bill Bailey at the Town Hall on the 16th of March. Her mischievous personality and quick wit are bound to have you constantly chuckling! Critics are calling her 'one of the stand-out stand-ups of her generation.'

Closing the month is 'Brighton Rock' which opens at the Everyman on the 27th. As a vicious gang war unravels, one murder leads to the next in this classic Graham Greene novel.

If you were lucky enough to nab a ticket for the most desired show of the year, then I am very jealous of you! Rob Brydon, Lee Mack and David Mitchell are coming together out of the ‘Would

Normally, I like to cater to everyone’s needs but March seems to be clearly dominated by two themes... I promise a lot less theatre and horses next month!

COUNCILLORS CORNER Parking Parking is becoming a really serious issue in our town. In some areas, like Zone 1 in the town centre, permit parking is not working well for local residents because of the number of business permits issued or pay and display bays. Also, the cost of parking charges on streets or in car parks concerns many people and I know it particularly worries independent traders in areas like the Bath Road and Montpellier. Street permit schemes and pay and display areas are controlled by Gloucestershire County Council who are the Highways Authority – they are responsible for the roads, pavements, highway trees, street lighting, etc. in Cheltenham. All the money raised from on-street permit schemes and pay and display charges are collected and retained by the County Council. Many, but not all of the car parks in the town centre, are owned by Cheltenham Borough Council. Parking charges in Council-run car parks have not been raised in recent years,

however, the costs are set to rise following recommendation in this year’s draft budget. If you have any questions or comments with respect to on-street parking, permit parking or pay and display, you should contact the County Council via email: parking@gloucestershire.gov.uk For questions or comments regarding the car parks run by Cheltenham Borough Council please email parking@cheltenham.gov.uk.

Highways Local I have used part of my ‘Highways Local’ County Council budget to get the footpath between Naunton Way and Fairfield Parade resurfaced. This footpath is a really well-used shortcut between the Bath Road and Naunton Park School. It is quite dark at night and was in really poor condition, so I am pleased that it is done now. I have also asked for footway and road resurfacing works to take place on Naunton Park Road.

Reporting Highway Issues Gloucestershire Highways have

a Contact Centre & "Report It" system for potholes, flooding, blocked drains and highway emergencies. You can log, update and track your report online - https://www.gloucestershire. gov.uk/roads-parking-and-rightsof-way/roads/report-it or by calling 08000 514514. - Cllr Klara Sudbury, Mayor of Cheltenham

Gloucester author becomes a bestseller Gloucester author Rachel Sargeant’s latest novel, The Perfect Neighbours, published in December 2017, has reached the top ten in the Kindle bestseller charts, and number one in the British and Irish Kindle crime chart. The novel explores the tensions that arise when a newcomer peers below the polite veneer of an apparently close-knit, expat community and finds something toxic buried beneath. When Helen Taylor moves to Germany with her loving husband Gary, she can’t wait to join the community of British teachers from the local International School. But her new start is about to become her worst nightmare and Helen quickly discovers that the perfect neighbours tell the perfect lies. As soon as the charming family across the way welcomes Helen into their home, she begins to suspect that all is not as it seems. Her unease turns to panic when Gary starts to behave strangely and a child goes missing, vanished without a trace. It’s not long before violence and tragedy strike.

Lions Club of Cheltenham March Update February was a very busy month for Club members. Between the 19th and the 25th of February, they were manning the bookstall in the Regent Arcade. The Club would like to thank all customers and people who kindly donated the books. All proceeds will go towards the running cost of the Club's Holiday Caravan at Burnham on Sea, which totals more than £4,000 per year. It is hard to believe that this will be the 35th year since the first caravan was opened (replaced in 1991 and 2010)! Plans are well in hand for occupancy during the summer with local families being recommended by Acorns Children’s Hospice, the Hopkins Trust and Gloucestershire Carers. Club members have also been busy sorting spectacles, some of which are being sent to the District Convention at Page 30

With cracks appearing in the cosy neighbourhood, Helen realises her perfect neighbours are capable of almost anything. The book is available from Amazon and the HarperCollins website.

Town Centre Talking Who really suffers when the council decides it’s time to shake-up parking charges? It’s always been a major talking point and it’s certainly been grabbing the headlines again in Cheltenham – parking charges. Cheltenham Borough Council has put up the cost of parking at its car parks and it was no surprise the local media saw it as a big story. “Parking charges poised to soar” screamed the front page of the Gloucestershire Echo. Or, if you prefer their online version on Gloucestershire Live: “Cheltenham parking charges to go up by 45% despite £2million profit last year.” Punchline joined in with “Shock for drivers as parking charges soar” while the council’s own website desperately tried to present a more positive spin with the strapline: “Parking charges are set to change next month for the first time in eight years”. However the figures are presented, the decision to increase charges was not welcomed by our town centre businesses. They are doing everything they can at present to attract more customers. They are up against many issues: it’s a quiet time of year, the growth of online shopping and successful out-of-town complexes where parking is free. The thought that it would cost 45 percent more to park in Cheltenham could be the final straw. Why on earth would anyone come into town if they were suddenly being asked to pay so much more before they had spent a penny in a shop or café? The truth is in the detail. If you park for more than four hours in one of two car parks – High Street and Sherborne Place – you’ll be paying £8 from 1st of March. As it currently costs £5.50, that is the 45 percent increase (or almost) Page 32

the Echo headline refers to. Similarly, park for more than six hours at Bath Parade, Rodney Road, St James Street or St Georges Road and you’ll soon be paying £12 rather than £10 – a 20 percent jump. But look at the short-term parking charges and the increases are significantly less, both in percentage and cash terms. If you’re parking for up to two hours in key car parks like Rodney Road and St Georges Road, the price remains the same. Park for up to two or three hours at Chelt Walk and you’ll pay less than you do now. The council has clearly corrected some anomalies and is also trying to encourage short-term parking to get a faster turnaround in spaces and make it cheaper to park long-term in less popular car parks. Despite a 50p increase at Town Centre East to park all day, that £6 charge is half what you’d pay at Rodney Road or Bath Parade. Park all day at Regent Arcade when the new charges come in there, and it will cost you £15. The council says it is keen to promote other “sustainable” alternative ways of travel such as public transport, walking and cycling. There is also good evidence – uncovered by the BID in its initial market research – that cars are not the most popular way of getting into Cheltenham. Our research showed that just 21 percent of hundreds of visitors to the town centre had got there by car. But I’m left wondering if enough thought has been given to one key section of our community – the people who work in our shops, restaurants and other businesses. They’re already suffering from the fact that is harder than ever to get a pass for the onstreet parking areas run by

Gloucestershire County Council. Yes, they may be able to travel to work by bus – the BID has a scheme to save staff money on their fares – or cycle or walk, but these are simply not options for all, particularly those who work anti-social hours. Both councils need to consider the needs of business staff as well as shoppers and visitors when they draw up parking strategies and consider parking charges in the future. We may still have lower parking costs than many of our neighbouring big city rivals – Bristol and Oxford among them – but when towns like Cirencester are undercutting us and offering “free after 3.00pm” schemes, it would be easy for shoppers to be tempted elsewhere. DON’T FORGET that Race Week is the time to come shopping in Cheltenham. While many locals stay away from the town centre because it is so busy, the central area empties while racegoers are actually at Prestbury Park. Parking will be free after 1.00pm again this year from 12th - 16th March in all Cheltenham Borough Council car parks. It’s a great offer - and potentially a great way to show that these incentives really do make a difference. Who knows, it might even be considered when the parking charges are next reviewed. But let’s assume that won’t be for another eight years. - by Kevan Blackadder, Cheltenham BID Director

Chalk Talk I’ve been holding talks in Parliament with an Official whose decision in just a couple of months will have a major impact on education in Cheltenham – the Regional Schools Commissioner. I wanted to meet her to discuss the proposal for a new school for Cheltenham, something I campaigned for prior to my election in 2015. It was part of my ‘5-point Plan’ for Cheltenham, drawn up following conversations with local parents. Now that vision is taking shape. Academy Trusts have been invited to submit their plans to become the official ‘sponsor’ for the £30million school. It’s good news that there’s so much local interest in running it. I’m keen that we make use of that local knowledge and experience. The final decision rests with the Commissioner, advised by an independent panel of head teachers and education experts. She and her team have been assessing the applications. We should know the outcome by April.

Once that decision is approved, the chosen sponsor will start consultation on possible sites for the new school. This should take place in June. The new school will hopefully be open in September 2019. The clock is ticking... In further positive news for local schools, I am delighted that Balcarras has recently been awarded a six-figure grant from the Government’s £25m Strategic School Improvement Fund. This additional cash is to help Balcarras’ excellent teaching team support other schools across the county. The aim is to close the attainment gap in mathematics at KS2, particularly for disadvantaged pupils. It comes on top of the hundreds of pounds of additional money we have just won for every single Cheltenham secondary pupil, £600 extra for every pupil from All Saints’ to Bournside. As parents, we don’t need reminding that Gloucestershire’s schools have been

underfunded for decades. Following the marathon campaign for fair funding, so brilliantly supported by local parents and teachers, our pupils are finally getting a better deal. With the right sponsor for a new Cheltenham school, the future for local education can be brighter still. - by Alex Chalk

Puckrup Hall Golf Club rounds off charity partnership on £19,000 high

for a fun afternoon to enjoy a pig roast, bouncy castle and a vintage ice-cream van, which attracted as many grownups as children!” “The party was followed by a presentation of the winners of the day, a raffle and auction which altogether raised £9420 for Sue Ryder. Everyone involved in organising the day was thrilled with how generous everyone was.”

Front row left to right: Men's captain Phil Schiaffino, Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Community Fundraising Manager Kelly Rumble and Ladies' Captain Ros Fenny Back row left to right: Club members Andrew Pearson, Sam Schiaffino and Jo Colman as they presented their final fundraising cheque at the hospice The Captains, members and families of Puckrup Hall Golf Club in Tewkesbury have recently rounded off a year of incredible fundraising by presenting Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice with a cheque for £19,423.55! The club captains both took the decision of supporting the local hospice as their charity of the year after visiting and hearing first-hand about the specialist care the hospice gives. Men’s Captain Phil Schiaffino said, “Sue Ryder have supported many of the past and present captains, members, families and friends of the club, both directly and indirectly. Neil Annis, a member of the Hospice at Home Team at Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice, is a close friend and member of Puckrup so we knew firsthand the amazing work Sue Ryder do.” Teeing off their fundraising activities with a Captain’s drive in and drive out in January last year, held at the stunning course on the outskirts of Tewkesbury, the Men’s and Ladies’ captains Phil Schiaffino and Ros Fenney have supported the hospice by organising a year-long programme of fundraising events and activities at the club. Charity quiz nights, raffles, auctions, a Captains’ Day and a charity dinner in November coupled with matchPage 36

funding from employers and a very generous anonymous donation have seen the club raise over £19,000 for the local hospice. Phil adds, “My wife, Sam Schiaffino with my sister Jo Colman and Andrew Pearson have also manned the Halfway House, a shed between the 8th and 14th holes, serving tea, coffee, cakes and savouries 28 times throughout the year raising funds for the hospice. Allegedly they serve the best bacon rolls in the county and a quarter of a tonne of bacon was cooked on two camping stoves over the year!” Sam said “We couldn’t have done all the baking ourselves so we asked the members and their partners to support us which they all did in abundance. We were overwhelmed to have had this support and felt that it made our fundraising year inclusive to members and non-members alike.” Phil added, “The highlight of the year was Captains’ Day which was a day for all the members, their families and friends. The halfway house was open and there were competitions on various holes around the course to support fundraising and we roped in our families and friends to help out on the day. Once the golf was finished members’ families and friends met up

“Sam’s employer, Npower, matched £500 of funding and we also received match-funding of £2,900 from Zurich who is Jo’s employer. We are all so proud to have been involved with the fundraising which would not have been as successful as it was without the support from our baking community and the extra pairs of hands we roped in – both members and non-members. Our final total was very close to £20,000 and well ahead of the £15,000 target we had set ourselves." Kelly Rumble, Community Fundraising Manager at Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice said, “We are absolutely blown away by the kindness and generosity of the Captains and members of Puckrup Golf Club raising this incredible amount for our hospice. This will help our team of expert nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, family support workers and volunteers deliver over 1,080 hours of care for local people living with life-limiting conditions. It will make a huge difference to local families and for this everyone at the hospice shares their heartfelt thanks to all those who have supported the club in their fundraising over the past year.” For more information on Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice visit sueryder.org/Leckhampton For more information on the Puckrup Hall Golf Club visit www.puckruphallgolfclub.co.uk

Beware of Bargains You might notice that products you’ve seen advertised are available for less online. Places like eBay and Amazon Marketplace are packed with sellers offering very similar and cheaper products, but beware: many are knock-offs of other people’s products, and some are very poorly made. If the moral argument against buying from copycats — in some cases the same Chinese factories that make the original products either make the cheap copies or pass on the blueprints to neighbours who do the job instead — doesn’t move you, think about reliability and safety: inferior cables wear away and there have been countless cases of poor quality e-cigarettes, mobile phone chargers and laptop batteries going on fire. Sometimes internet bargains really are too good to be true, and when it comes to electrical safety we always recommend official, EU-approved products.

Wealth | Estates Trusted since 1898

The Final Tax... So, you have worked hard and saved for your long-term future and along the way paid the tax man his rightful dues. Financially you are the model citizen, however, when your estate is passing to loved ones there is one final tax take. All assets that are chargeable and exceed your allowances are subject to a 40% tax hit! Billions are taken in Inheritance Tax annually and it is almost voluntary... A lot can be done to reduce or eliminate the burden, yet we often find a reluctance to act. The typical drivers of fear and greed do not seem to have the same impact when looking at this tax. Certainly, there is a desire to avoid it but as the beneficiaries of any tax saving are family members the individual is not motivated so much by a personal outcome. Fear of losing access to capital, the costs of making changes and the complexity involved often

This might seem harsh but with a century of experience in guiding clients in tax planning matters, the Fry Group is sufficiently experienced to know not only the solutions that can help but also how to package these to achieve the outcomes individuals need in the least painful way possible. Starting with the simple steps of assessing your regular income needs and likely future capital needs can provide much-needed clarity about your capacity to gift. Doing that gifting in small initial steps is often a means of establishing financial confidence. Perhaps then more significant savings can be made by packaging assets in such a way that ongoing income is still available to you, but over time the capital is outside your estate. It is true, that really is achievable. We have been doing this for decades and have shaved, reduced or wiped out clients’ Inheritance Tax liabilities, saving millions of pounds for loved ones.
