Get out and about
If you are anything like me, you spent an awful lot of time during the last couple of months sat indoors in front of some kind of screen or device, however, thanks to the warmer temperatures and longer days, I feel more and more compelled to go out and embrace the wonderful outdoors.
I'm not the sportiest of people, the gym isn't really for me, but ask me to go on a walk and 9 times out of 10 I'm up for it. Walking is a great way to exercise - it helps you blow away the cobwebs (and burn off all those chocolate Easter eggs), and best of all - it's free! Whether you have a wander around your neighbourhood, visit the park or spend a day in the countryside, you can be sure to be doing your body a favour. If you get tired easily and need support while walking, check out Linden Leisure's fantastic range of walking and seat sticks (p.11).
Another great way to enjoy some exercise and fresh air is gardening. Whether you are pressure washing the patio, cutting the hedge or mowing the lawn, both your garden and your body will thank you for it, even if the latter may not feel like it straight away. You will also get a great sense of achievement and peace of mind - that is until it all grows back at least...
Finally, if you just fancy going out and enjoying yourself - there's a fantastic range of events and festivals taking place in and around the area this month, and if all these days out leave you feeling inspired and you enjoy writing, check out the Gloucestershire Writers' Network Competition on p.14.

CHELTENHAM LIONS CLUB
Councillors Corner
Sandford Park footpath & cycle path markings
The bicycle and pedestrian markings on Lions Member Joan Pounds, President Tom Pettigrew and Suicide Crisis CEO Joy Hibbins with the laptop
The busy season is with us. The Club's recent book sale in the Regent Arcade produced record results, allowing the Club to donate a portable laptop to Suicide Crisis, a local charity providing a centre, home visits and emergency phone lines to people with a suicide or trauma crisis. A further donation of £500 was sent to Lions Clubs International for help with the Mozambique cyclone disaster. The Club would like to thank all their customers for their support and the Arcade for allowing the sale. The Easter Egg Raffle held in April was also a great success. 65 eggs were raffled off in venues across Cheltenham and Tewkesbury. The proceeds will go towards the running cost of the Club's Holiday Caravan at Burnhamon-Sea. A donation will also be made to Tewkesbury Hospital. The Club would like to thank all the venues that took part. On 12th May members will be providing administration, car parking and stewards for the British Heart Foundation Bike Ride at the Racecourse. Over 2,000 cyclists are expected to take part in the event. On 28th May members will be joining forces with Forest of Dean Lions Club members to help with Prostate Screening Tests in Mitcheldean. Plant sales will be held on the 11th of May in Charlton Kings (near the library) and on the 1st of June at the Exmouth Arms, Bath Road. Both will start at 9.30am. 6
the footpath/cycleway in Sandford Park have become faded. Also where the two switch over is confusing for both pedestrians and cyclists. I am pleased to report that the parks department at Cheltenham Borough Council have agreed to arrange for a contractor to refresh all of the lines and symbols, and to ensure they are consistent throughout.
South Cheltenham Secondary School Update
Following the appointment of Kier Construction as contractor, the County Council are developing proposals for the new Secondary school for South Cheltenham in Leckhampton. The County Council will be holding public drop-ins to show the options being considered, they hope to have these dates shortly and will publicise them with the view to having a venue close to the proposed school site. The dedicated webpage will be updated regularly: https://www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/educationand-learning/school-planning-and-projects/ cheltenham-school-places/school-placesin-cheltenham/
Could you become a ‘Friend’
There are various Friends groups for local parks and gardens in Cheltenham such as Friends of Sandford Park, Friends of Montpellier Bandstand and Gardens and Friends of Pilley Bridge Nature Reserve. These groups are run by volunteers who contribute a tremendous amount of time and energy looking after the town’s green spaces. If you're interested in becoming involved please contact the green space development team at greenspacedevelopment@cheltenham.gov.uk. Health
May is National Walking Month National Walking Month is an annual campaign to promote the benefits of walking.
It is perhaps walking that is the most accessible exercise, available to all regardless of current levels of fitness or income.
Your health Walking gives your leg muscles and lungs a workout; reduces stress; helps you sleep; burns excess calories; and reduces your risk of osteoporosis, cancer, depression and Type 2 diabetes. Phew, that sounds so good it should be prescribed.
The NHS says even just a brisk daily 10-minute walk has many health benefits, counting towards your recommended 150 minutes of weekly exercise. A brisk pace is around 3 miles an hour – 10
if you’re relatively fit, you should still be able to talk, but not sing a song. The free NHS Active 10 app handily tells you when you’re walking fast enough and suggests ways to fit in more brisk walking. Particularly through the late spring and summer, walking outside will top-up your levels of Vitamin D which is good for your bone health and your immune system.
Be sociable – or get alone time Walking can be a chance to chat with your friends and family. Nordic walking classes, a Walking for Health walk, or a walking group such as the Ramblers (formerly the Ramblers Association) are ideal if you don’t have anyone to walk with. However, you may prefer to use walks as a chance for some time to yourself. You could listen to music which can help you get into a rhythm and walk faster.
If you are concerned about wearing headphones while you walk, look at AfterShokz Bone Conduction Headphones. These sit on bones on the sides of your head but not in your ears, meaning you can still hear traffic.
Raise money for a good cause For National Walking Month, the British Heart Foundation is promoting the Just Walk initiative to encourage you to raise money in an organised walk. Tying in with this is their Walk to School Week from the 16th to the 20th May, where they ask teachers, parents and children to put their best foot forward and walk to school each day. How and where to walk You can either set aside time for walking or just build it into your daily routine and
journeys. Could you get the family out for an after-dinner walk or take a weekend ramble that ends at a pub or restaurant?
• Wear supportive, suitable footwear. If you are walking to work, you could take a smarter pair of shoes with you to change into. • Stay hydrated. Always take a drink with you if you’re planning to walk for more than 20 minutes or it’s hot. • Always consider the terrain and the weather, especially if you’re heading off the beaten track. Do you need warm and/ or waterproof clothing, headgear and footwear? Do you have snacks, drinks, a first aid kit and a charged mobile phone? An internet search will return innumerable resources to help you both start and stick with it, not just for May but throughout the year.

Gloucestershire Writers’ Network Competition 2019
New festival to be added to Cheltenham's event calendar
Supported by The Times and The Sunday Times Cheltenham Literature Festival.
Do you write poetry or prose? Would you like to read your work at The Times and The Sunday Times Cheltenham Literature Festival in October? The 2019 Gloucestershire Writers’ Network Competition is now open for all writers of poetry and prose of 16 and over, who live, work or study in Gloucestershire. There are two prizes of £200, one for the best poem (of up to 50 lines) and one for the best piece of prose (of up to 750 words) and six runner-up prizes. The winners and runners-up will be invited to read at the Gloucestershire Writers’ Network Prize Winners event at the festival this October.
This year’s competition theme is ‘Numbers’ which you can explore as widely as you like. We are absolutely delighted to announce this year's judges. Not only are they both excellent at their own crafts and wonderful readers but lovely individuals whose expertise will be invaluable to those more experienced or new to writing. Prose Judge: Amanda Reynolds https://www.amandareynoldsauthor.com/ Poetry Judge: Stephen Daniels https://stephenkirkdaniels.com/
For some tips and ideas, judges' thoughts and how to enter, head over to the GWN website at: https://gloswriters.org.uk/competition/ 14
This month sees the start of an exciting new festival with the launch of the Cheltenham International Film Festival which will take place from 27th of May to 1st of June.
The festival will open with the preview of a major, new motion picture (Sometimes Always Never) starring Bill Nighy. This will be followed by six days of events, including film screenings, director Q&As, master classes, panel discussions and talks by highly-respected film industry professionals and “name” celebrities.
On the guest list are, amongst others, Mike Leigh, director of Bleak Moments and Nuts in May; Carl Hunter, director of Sometimes Always Never; Josie Rourke, director of Mary Queen of Scots; legendary Enfant Terrible Steven Berkoff; Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran, writers of Birds of A Feather; Emma Samms of Dynasty fame; Stephen Cookson; Caroline Norbury MBE; and from Poland leading filmmakers Piotr Sobocinski Jr and Jan Komasa. Popular actor and local star Simon Pegg has agreed to be Patron of the festival.
Cheltenham International Film Festival will bring together films from all over the world in a competition judged by a prestigious jury and aims to introduce new audiences to the rich diversity of independent films and film-makers. For more information, please visit www.cheltfilm.com.

Auction Anecdote Our April sale featured the most exciting consignment of advertising and packaging antiques I have ever encountered. The house had been furnished like a museum with antique advertising signs, mirrors and shop display cabinets covering every wall from the hallway, through the kitchen, sitting room, bedrooms and even the bathroom. All the items were exceptional in both their desirability and condition with several rarities such as a pictorial enamel sign for the ‘Wellington Journal and Shrewsbury News’ and a ‘Hudson’s Soap’ enamel sign depicting a clock face to show the ‘We close at’ time. The selection of mirrors generally related to Cadbury’s and Fry’s Chocolate whilst the icing on the cake came in the form of two very attractive Ogden’s cigarette vending cabinets. Since this is a very popular collecting field we were confident demand would be strong for this outstanding collection but even then we were amazed by the strength of the bidding on sale day. Initially estimated at an overall total of £6,000/£8,000 we were just blown away by the final result of over £22,000. Many bidders probably went home sorely disappointed as they did not even get close to buying the items they had come for - although I think we all enjoyed the buzz and excitement of the moment. Top price of the day was £3,200 paid by an Irish telephone bidder for one of the cigarette cabinets whilst the Wellington Journal enamel sign made £1,650 and the Hudson’s Soap sign made £1,300. A large Victorian ‘Cadbury’s Chocolate’ mirror made £1,250 whilst a mirrored Cadbury’s shop display wall cabinet made £980. Smiths’ next antiques sale is on the 10th May and has a special section for Fine Silver & Jewellery whilst the sale on the 14th June features Clocks and Watches. Please call 01531 821776 or visit www.smithsnewentauctions.co.uk for entry details. - Written by Rita Kearsey Manager of Smiths Auction Room at Newent

Town Centre Talking
Classics at Prescott
Let’s roll up our sleeves – and make a real difference There’s no better way of tackling a problem than getting together with others.
Cheltenham BID launched its Tidy Up Cheltenham campaign to help make the town centre a better place for all.
We don’t just aim to involve our staff, UBICO and the borough council but the businesses and their employees.
If a retailer finds cigarette ends outside his or her shop one morning, rather than just stepping over them, we’re asking them to sweep them up and throw them away properly. If enough businesses do the same, it will soon make a big difference.
But sometimes a more organised approach is needed and so it proved with an area where rubbish continues to be an on-going problem. For the businesses that back on to Post Office Lane, it is the only place they can store their bins, and, with four restaurants, cafes and coffee shops among them, that can generate a lot of rubbish and food waste. So as part of the Tidy Up Cheltenham campaign, we arranged a litter pick and general clean-up of the lane.
Three BID ambassadors, Deb, Carolyn and Phil, were joined by Clive Evans, community protection officer at the council, Sophie Scarrott, owner of Keith Scarrott Shoes (and BID Board Director) and Claire Harrison and Sarah Locke from Yates Wine Bar. They got down and dirty to help clear away rubbish, food waste and pallets. Just over an hour later, the place looked very different. Let’s keep on working together to restore pride in our town.
Kevan Blackadder, Cheltenham BID Director
On 12th of May 2019, the Rotary Clubs of Cheltenham, Cleeve Vale and Winchcombe will once again host the ‘Classics at Prescott’ event at the iconic Hill Climb track, which is also the home of the Bugatti Owners' Club. Now in its 16th year, the event has helped raise in excess of £200k for a wide variety of local, national and international charities. The gates will open at 9am and from 10am the 200 paddock entries will drive the famous hill. A second drive will take place later in the afternoon. The event is noncompetitive, and in between drives the cars will be parked in the paddock where they can be viewed at close quarters.
There will also be a static display of classic cars in the Orchard throughout the day and at lunchtime a gentle cavalcade of these cars will 'drive the hill' so that everyone can see them in motion. Many spectators are motoring enthusiasts and drive their own prized classic cars to the event so even the car park is an interesting place to wander! A souvenir programme will be handed out to each car driver and walk-in spectator. The entry fee for cars, irrespective of the number of passengers, is £15, walk-in spectators pay £5 per person. Reduced early bird tickets are available online at www.classicsatprescott.com (click on 'Apply to take part' and save 20%). There is ample parking space on site and food will be available from several outlets.

Cloakroom refitting with building works to accommodate a shower. “An excellent job that started and finished on time. Moreover Matt had allowed sufficient margin for including significant additional work we requested. A good team who adapted to circumstances and tried to minimise the inevitable dust and mess. Highly recommended.”
