Short Story Paws for Comfort By Jackie Brewster “Are you Ian, the bellboy?” An elegant lady in a tweed cape strode into the hotel ballroom, startling Ian, who’d been busy admiring his hair from every angle in the mirrored walls. Behind her another lady in an anorak, wrestling a nylon men’s suit carrier in her arms, struggled to keep up. Ian nodded warily. He’d already carried one old lady’s luggage to the second floor and that seemed like quite enough work for one day. “You’ll do perfectly,” she said, and turned to her companion. “Dolly, don’t you think he has the look of a young Liberace?” “Very handsome, Val,” the lady nodded emphatically. Ian instinctively smoothed his hair. “So that’s settled,” Val said. “You’ll do it.” “Do what?” Ian was alarmed. As a rule, he tried to do as little as possible. “We’re holding a fashion show in the hall and our model has let us down.” She smiled demurely. “I assume you have catwalk experience?” “A bit.” Ian’s gran had once entered him into a beautiful baby contest, so he knew that the world of fashion was just waiting to discover him. He frowned. “I’ll have to ask my manager.” “Don’t worry yourself about that,” Val said. “I’ve already cleared it with Mr Fulsome; he’s delighted with the arrangement.” Ian was surprised to hear this Page 6

because the air between him and Mr Fulsome had been frosty ever since Ian had been caught taking selfies in the honeymoon suite Jacuzzi. “What would I have to do?” Ian asked. “Imagine New York fashion week,” Val raised two manicured hands to set the scene, “and you’re the star of the show.” Ian’s eyes lit up.

In a few excited taps of his phone Ian alerted the world to his big catwalk debut.

“Where’s my manners?” she laughed. “Let me introduce our designer, Dolly Cramp.”

“Right, let’s get you into your outfit.” Val clapped her hands. “Dolly, hand over the suit.”

Dolly shuffled forward and awkwardly shook Ian’s hand, while trying not to lose control of the suit carrier.

“You want me to change here?” Ian asked; this was all happening very fast.

“You’re just perfect for my outfit.” She grinned as though unable to take her eyes off him. Ian had seen fashion designers in magazines but none of them looked like Dolly Cramp. He hoped the grubby anorak she was wearing wasn’t one of her designs. “The local TV station is here already,” Val added, “so you’ll get lots of exposure.” “What?” Ian suddenly felt excited. “Where?” Val pointed to the ballroom exit. “Just through those doors.” “Have I got time to let my friends know?” Ian pulled out his phone. Nothing was going to stop him announcing his big break in fashion. “Be my guest!” Val cried. “Get it out on social media, and everyone will see you on the teatime news.”

“We’ve seen it all before,” Dolly grinned, offering him the bag, “haven’t we Val?” “Let’s turn our backs anyway, Dolly?” Val said. “Give the lad his dignity.” Ian unzipped the bag, and a long brown garment of furry padded fabric came tumbling out. “What’s this?” He thought there must be a mistake. “It looks like a onesie?” “It’s the star of my Paws for Comfort range,” Dolly called over her shoulder. “Incredibly snuggly, and it makes the wearer look like a gerbil. Will you need a hand with the tail?” Ian held up the costume in horror and wondered whether he could make a run for it while their backs were turned. “And be quick,” Val added. “The cameras are rolling just outside.”

FOREVER JACKSON

Celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the BAD Tour Thirty years ago Michael Jackson’s famed Bad Tour hit the UK. The concerts grossed £100m, supporting an album that was No1 in 25 countries, shifting an incredible 45 million copies. Five of its songs topped the UK charts. Award-winning, critically-acclaimed stage show Forever Jackson captures this moment in time, and it is coming to Cheltenham! Producer Pete Tobit says that it was a challenge to recreate this landmark tour. “Not only has it been necessary to bring to life the superb musicianship, electrifying choreography, stunning audiovisual projections and jaw-dropping special effects of a Michael Jackson concert show,” says Pete, “it also requires a performer of infinite vocal ability and stage presence to carry off the persona of the King of Pop.” Robin Parsons, star of the award-winning show,

captures Michael Jackson's spirit perfectly and even had the honour of performing before him. He appeared at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles as part of the pop legend’s lavish 45th birthday celebrations. Pete Tobit promises that – thanks to the incredible attention to detail – fans of the King of Pop are in for a jaw-dropping, ultimately authentic experience. Having accrued a staggering 1,000 performances at prestigious venues as far and wide as India to South America and all points in between, Forever Jackson is finally heading this way, and tickets are available from the theatre box office 01242 572573 or www.everymantheatre.org.uk.

Outstanding young man from Gloucester wins Rotary award Dale Rawlins, aged 21, has recently been recognised with a Rotary Young Citizen Award and a ÂŁ500 cheque for his exceptional work helping young disabled people get into football either on the pitch, in the sports shop or as a coach. Dale set up a disability football team when he was just 14 and went on to open a social enterprise sports shop to create employment opportunities for players when he was 16. He has since succeeded in generating several first-time jobs, including many for young people with learning, mental or physical disabilities. He has also helped youngsters to achieve FA Level 1 qualifications, enabling them to coach others.

The number of sportsmen and women Dale has brought into the game is about 400. He now runs the largest pan-disability football club in the UK, with 13 adult and three children's sides. He has set up one of only five disabled ladies sides in the country and one deaf team with over 130 regular players.

National Croquet Day - 13th May

can be played to a high standard even by those not as agile as they were. It is a game for all ages. Many younger players are still at University and play to world standards. Croquet can also be found in schools and Universities.

Croquet is a sport that promotes health and well-being. It's a game of strategy and skill, where men and women play on equal terms. Did you know there are two types of croquet played at World Championship level? Association Croquet (AC) and Golf Croquet (GC) are the main codes, each with their own demands, tactics and skills - AC focuses on tactics and working out a long-term strategy as the player builds a break (rather as in snooker). This is where special two-ball shots come in to encourage scoring multiple hoops in a turn, whilst GC interactively contests each hoop, often with spectacular hoop shots and distant ball clearances. Croquet is enjoyable and rewarding at all skill levels from beginner to advanced and

Dale has ambitions to scale up the enterprise by opening 18 further shops which will create 150 jobs over the next five years. He is giving people the confidence and skills to gain mainstream employment and enabling people to move from institutional to independent living.

In July 2018 Cheltenham will be hosting the National Open Championship of Association Croquet. Cheltenham Croquet Club (www. cheltenhamcroquet.org) has a taster day on 13th May. To book a time, email croquetcheltenham@gmail.com or call in between 10am and 3pm.

Unique knitted show garden installation Hundreds of knitters from all over the world have answered a Gloucestershire widow’s call to craft hearts for a special knitted garden in memory of her husband. Clare Young, 50, from Gloucester, has been overwhelmed by the huge response to her ambitious plan to create the world’s first full-sized knitted show garden installation at RHS Malvern Spring Festival on May 10-13 (www.rhsmalvern.co.uk).

have been sent to Clare – more than doubling her target well before her early May deadline.

Her plea to knit 10,000 hearts for the garden has been shared and re-shared on social media and people from as far away as the USA and New Zealand have picked up their knitting needles in response.

The knitted hearts will be hung in and around the knitted garden, with some of the additional hearts made available for visitors to purchase. The money raised will go to Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice in Cheltenham which cared for Clare's late husband Ken.

Amazingly four crafters, now known as ‘Queen of Hearts’, have created 1,000 hearts each. As a result, a staggering 25,000 ‘works of heart’

Local History

The Birth of a Railway

Demolition at Winchcombe in July 1979

By David Aldred

The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway is now open all the way from Cheltenham to Broadway. For this month's article I thought it might be interesting to discover how the heritage railway came into being. The death knell for the Cheltenham to Honeybourne railway line was sounded in March 1968. The last regular passenger train was withdrawn by British Rail so that only goods trains and the occasional passenger train, diverted from the main Bristol to Birmingham line, travelled the route. Its end, however, dragged on, despite the obvious fact that British Rail was losing money keeping it open for the few trains which used it. Matters nearly came to a head in June 1972 when it announced the line would be closed on 1 January 1974. This news got Cheltenham councillors very excited and they spent ÂŁ60,000 on a report into the feasibility of building a north to south relief road on the abandoned track. Imagine their dismay when less than a year later British Rail changed its mind! Trains continued to run. On 25 August 1976, the unexpected happened. Several wagons of a goods train travelling to South Wales derailed just outside the site of Winchcombe station, damaging a stretch of track. British Rail decided not Page 16

Lifted track awaiting collection at Bishop's Cleeve

to repair the damage. It offered the track and the land to an embryonic Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway Society, which had been started by just four visionaries who hoped to keep the line intact. Not surprisingly this small society could not afford the purchase, and so it was ironical that three years later in July 1979 when funds had been promised, British Rail changed its mind for a second time, declaring it wanted to keep the route open, despite already removing the rails! Then in August just a year later British Rail changed its mind for a third time! Its chairman Sir Peter Parker announced it was prepared to sell the line because of the financial problems it was facing. The society immediately started negotiations with a view to initially reopening the stretch from Toddington to Honeybourne. There was great enthusiasm for the project with over 700

people attending a meeting in Shaftesbury Hall in the centre of Cheltenham in February 1981 when the society first appealed for volunteers. Tim Bazeley, the secretary, painted for the audience an ambitious future as a tourist and community railway possessing thirty-five steam locomotives in this respect subsequent events indicated that enthusiasm outran realism! However, there was enough enthusiasm to ensure wheels began to turn the very next month. A company was set up to raise capital for the purchase, and both the company and its supporters still continue to manage their developments and finances carefully and prudently to ensure the continuing success of the railway. In March the Toddington site was leased from British Rail so that a start could be made before the actual purchase. By early June one hundred and twenty yards of track had been laid towards Winchcombe (not Honeybourne as originally planned)

Tim Bazeley waves from the first locomotive driven along the short re-laid track at Toddington

and by late June steam locomotive 2807 had arrived from the famous locomotive scrapyard at Barry for restoration; it still runs on the railway today. The first public train ran on 22 April 1984 to Didbrook. The rest, as they say, is now history – and a remarkable achievement.

Rocky’s Rescue helps dogs in need Rocky’s Rescue is a small, Cheltenham-based not for profit organisation set up to rescue dogs in need from the UK and Romania, finding them loving homes all across the UK. Rocky’s Rescue was set up by Jean Corbett after she fostered a rescue dog from Romania, named Rocky. Jean loved him so much that she decided to set up a rescue charity to help other dogs, who are at risk of being killed or starving to death, and named this organisation after her beloved Rocky. Since setting up the organisation, 84 dogs have been rescued and rehomed. Rocky's Rescue is always looking for adopters and fosterers. To find out more visit www.rockysrescue.co.uk.

Chalk Talk I am absolutely delighted that Cheltenham’s multimillion-pound bid for capital investment in Cheltenham General Hospital has been successful. This is hugely significant. It means that CGH will be getting a multi-million-pound upgrade, to include refitted wards for inpatients, additional theatres and plenty more besides. After a decade in which it felt like our hospital was being passed over for investment, this is so, so welcome. I also welcome the assurances from NHS bosses that this investment does not pre-determine the outcome of the STP (plan for future health services in Gloucestershire). A consultation will take place later in the year. I will continue to campaign not just for the retention of our local A&E, but for the restoration of 24/7 cover. Make no mistake, the campaign to improve and revitalise Cheltenham goes on. This funding boost for our hospital is part of a pattern of major transformational investment in Cheltenham. We’ve won £22m from the Government to support our cyber future. £3m will be coming to support new affordable housing in Portland Place. We have secured vital funding to tackle rough sleeping in Cheltenham. Our secondary schools are receiving an extra £600 per pupil. Work improving Cheltenham Spa station and the introduction of sub 2-hour London trains is about to start. Meanwhile, the public consultation on the £500m A417 Air Balloon scheme means we are a step closer to the biggest road improvement scheme in Gloucestershire for a generation. There is so much more I want to achieve but this is truly fantastic news. By Alex Chalk, MP for Cheltenham

May kicks off with the Cheltenham Jazz Festival. Like every year, you can look forward to an incredible lineup. This year brings, amongst others, visionary singer-songwriter Van Morrison, multi-million-selling singersongwriter Corinne Bailey Rae, awardwinning pop-jazz singer Caro Emerald and chart-topping Irish vocalist Imelda May to Cheltenham. The six-day festival is one of the highlights of the local calendar and never fails to make Montpellier Gardens come alive. This month also brings the Cheltenham

The Everyman also has a fantastic lineup this month. Kneehigh Productions are bringing you their new show 'The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk' in the first week of the month, followed by 'Great Expectations' from the 8th to the 12th starring Nichola McAuliffe. Mid-month brings Balletboyz on the 21st and the well-loved Gifford Circus from the 17th to the 21st. Ending the month on a high, the huge smash hit show 'Hairspray' is making its way to Cheltenham for a week of performances bursting with energy and sparkle. It is not to be missed! You can end the month in the most classic Cheltenham way possible with the Suffolk Street Fair and the iconic cheese rolling down Cooper’s Hill - both take place on the 28th. Have a great time! You can find more of my work and reviews of shows, plays, etc. on my blog www.watchingfromthecheapseats. wordpress.com

Councillors Corner By Cllr Klara Sudbury, Mayor of Cheltenham As I come towards the end of my year as Mayor (it has flown by!), I wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who has helped me make my year very special – from the hundreds of people I have met at local charity, business and community events to those who have contributed in some way to my charity appeal. My final charity fundraising event is taking place at Sandford Parks Lido between 9am and 1pm on Sunday 13th May. It is a wellness and fitness morning with yoga, pilates and Zumba classes, followed by a swim. Entry is £21.55pp and tickets are available at https://wellfitmayor. eventbrite.co.uk. This event is kindly supported by Sandford Park Lido and Asda Cheltenham as well as local studios and individuals leading the classes. All proceeds will go to the Mayor of Cheltenham’s Charity (Reg. Charity No. 1118165), which will benefit the Hollie Gazzard

Trust and the Cheltenham & Gloucester Hospitals Charity’s Focus Fund. Raising funds for the two charities I am supporting has been a significant part of my year as Mayor and I will present the final amount raised to them at the Mayor Making on Wednesday 16th May. The ceremony will be held at Pittville Pump Room at 6.30pm. Entry to Mayor Making is free but you will need a ticket – please contact jennie.ingram @cheltenham.gov.uk or call 01242 264108.
