From the Editor Hello Reader, Wow, the clocks have gone back, the dark nights have returned and the children are back at school for their last term before Christmas. We are now steadily steering towards the end of the year, but for now let’s concentrate on what’s ahead of us and remember, remember the 5th of November! Guy Fawkes Night is back to bring us bonfires and fireworks – make sure you dress up warmly when you go out and don’t forget to keep your pets as far away from the noise as possible. Your vet can help with advice and medication for your pet so do give them a call.

Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people

Another major event in November is Remembrance Sunday on 8th November. The Royal British Legion is hoping to once again raise millions with their Poppy Appeal, and this month you’ll see the theme of our front covers is centred around Remembrance Day – please support the Royal British Legion in any way you can. This month, BBC Children in Need also raises much needed funds. Their Appeal Night will be live on BBC One on 13th November. Many schools, nurseries, playgroups, workplaces and shops in the area will be raising funds for this worthy cause – it will be a week of non-stop fun! If you have an event planned to raise money for Children in Need or any other charity, then don’t forget to email your story and pictures to office@glosdirectories.co.uk so that we can include them in the next issue. Best wishes,

Vicky Muller

Tips from The Millionaire Maker The media have called Richard Denny the millionaire maker. For over 30 years he has helped thousands of people into financial wealth, and others into greater achievement and happiness. His lectures, books, videos, DVD’s and CD’s are bought around the world and he lives right here in the Cotswolds.

The Success Destroyer Most of my working life is spent helping people to be happy and successful. My work is primarily in the corporate, private and public sectors, from the individual to the multi-national. I state this not as an ego trip, but as a firm foundation for you, my reader, to understand and take on board the magnitude of this message. There is not a successful or happy person in the world who consciously or subconsciously is not aware of the ruthless power of the success destroyer. It is a foul disease caught easily, highly infectious and can be difficult to eradicate once established. This foul destroyer is negativity, in all its various guises. This manifests itself with negative thinking, negative self-talk, negative communication, negative body language and a thirst for bad news coupled with enjoyment from other's misfortunes. Some sufferers spend an inordinate part of their life criticising, condemning and complaining. It is really very easy to find fault, but requires a bit of effort and imagination to find a better way. Very little criticism is constructive, mostly it is destructive. We all thrive on a little constructive criticism, but this can be “Oh so rare and caring”.

The world we live in is challenging though wonderful. Unfortunately, the balance is going wrong with so much news delivered to us 24 hours a day, and by its very nature news is normally bad. My brother Robin used to say “no news is good news”. Of course news and awareness of some of the horrors of the world can help to alleviate it or encourage action. The balance goes wrong however when there is little or no news, so it becomes sensationalised or contorted and exaggerated so everything becomes a disaster or crisis and we then become desensitised. So do make an effort to bring the pendulum back into balance. Be aware of the evil power of the negative and start by leading a life that is more positive and only allow the negative to play a small part of your life’s journey. So a few tips to get started: 1. The drink in the pub becomes half full, not half empty 2. Tomorrow will be partly sunny, not partly cloudy 3. When asked how you are, never again say “not too bad, thank you”. How about “I’m feeling ok”, “I’m feeling fine” or “I’m feeling good, thank you”. When we say “not too bad, thank you” we are implying either that we are normally bad, or we are surprised that we are not bad. Remembrance Sunday And Pause To Remember

• Cheltenham’s remembrance service and parade to honour the sacrifice of armed services in war: 11am Sunday 8th November

• Mayor marks Remembrance Day at 11am on Wednesday 11th November with two minutes of silence at the war memorial The war memorial in Cheltenham’s Long Gardens will once again be the centrepiece for the town’s service of remembrance and civic parade on Sunday 8 November. On Remembrance Day the mayor, Cllr Duncan Smith, will honour the two minute silence at 11am. The Page 8

service will begin at 10.55am. A lone trumpeter will play ‘The last post’ before two minutes of silence at 11am. After the Reveille, the service continues with prayers, hymns and the national anthem, played by Gloucestershire Police Band. The mayor will lay the first wreath at the war memorial followed by other civic dignitaries, including borough and county councillors, and representatives from local organisations. After the wreaths have been laid, the civic party will watch from the steps of the Municipal Offices as Cheltenham Silver Band leads the march past. Taking part will be the Cheltenham branch of the Royal British Legion; Cheltenham Royal Naval Association; 243 Gloucester Field Hospital; 2624 Sqn Royal AUX (RAF Brize); Joint Services Support Unit; and Old Comrades. Also attending will be detachments from the naval, army and RAF cadets,

and patrols from local scouts. In the evening, the mayor will attend the Festival of Remembrance, which is organised by the Royal British Legion and held at the town hall. On Remembrance Day (Wednesday 11 November) the council is again supporting The Royal British Legion in encouraging businesses, shops, offices and individuals to pause to remember at 11am. During a short service conducted by Canon Dr Tudor Griffiths, the mayor, Cllr Duncan Smith, will observe a two minute silence at the war memorial. Children from Dunalley primary school will be attending to join in this act of remembrance. Cllr Duncan Smith said that as first citizen he counted it a privilege to be able to lead the town in this act of remembrance and would like to invite all members of the community to join him at both of the services.

Specialist Valuation Day A special antiques and collectables valuation event will be taking place soon in your area. The experts of Lockdales Auctioneers will be providing free valuations to the public on Monday 16th November, 11am to 3pm, at The Wheatpieces Community Centre, Columbine Road, Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, GL20 7SP (free parking subject to availability).

There will be experts providing valuations on the following types of collectables: Coins (including British & World, sovereigns, Krugerrands, Royal Mint commemoratives & proof sets), stamps, banknotes, medals & militaria, antiques, clocks, watches, jewellery, gold, silver, pre-1900 documents/books & maps, cigarette-cards, postcards, pre-1960 sporting programmes & tickets, scientific instruments, swords, bayonets & de-activated weapons. No appointment is necessary at this event, simply turn up with your items and the valuers will be happy to see you. Members of the public will have the option, if they wish, to consign their goods to auction (subject to terms & conditions). Cash purchase offers are also available. Valuations will be provided free of charge, with no obligation. High quality illustrated catalogues from previous auctions will be given away on a complimentary basis in order for the public to get a better idea of the services available. These valuation days have proven to be very popular in the past, and we have conducted hundreds of them across the UK. Some of the best items we have auctioned were brought to us at these events, such as two pieces of Russian 17th century enamelled silverware, a bowl and a lidded pot, which we later sold on behalf of the owners for over £75,000. One of the most interesting items we have sold recently was a fragment of pennant flag believed

to have been carried by the army of Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth. This was featured on television, and in newspapers nationwide. Sold for £2800 as a speculative item, the feeling was strong overall that the story behind the flag is true. It was nice to handle a topical item such as this. (Coins of Richard III do very well also!) If you have any questions feel free to contact Lockdales’ Martlesham offices: 01473 627110, sales@lockdales.com. Peugeot helps get Teenagers behind the wheel Peugeot has made it easier for teenagers in Gloucestershire to get behind the wheel by making its unique ‘Just Add Fuel®’ scheme available to 18-20 year olds for the very first time from local Dealerships, Warners’ of Gloucester and Warners’ of Tewkesbury. From September, young drivers will be able to benefit from the Peugeot Just Add Fuel® initiative on the Peugeot 108, due to a clever advanced telematics device which attaches to the on-board diagnostic port and tracks driver behaviour. Previously only available to drivers aged 21 or older, Peugeot has made strides in the motor industry by making the inclusive package available for young drivers on the Peugeot 108. Since its launch over five years ago, more than 27,000 people have taken advantage of Peugeot’s Just Add Fuel®. The innovative, fixed-cost motoring package ensures a single monthly payment which allows customers to leave the

showroom with three years’ insurance, servicing, road tax, warranty and roadside assistance for their vehicle. High on style, space and practicality, the Peugeot 108 is packed with a range of easy-to-use technology to improve life on the road. Offering an abundance of choice, drivers can choose from eight paint finishes, four interior ambiences and seven stylish themes on the 108. Marc Warner, Dealer Principal said: “Over the last five years, the Just Add Fuel® scheme has been recognised as a significant innovation in vehicle retailing and this has now been extended to help get first time drivers on the road in Gloucestershire. The Peugeot 108 is priced from just £248 rental per month and no initial payment is required. The monthly payments can be improved depending on variables like the amount of deposit paid, location, etc.

Just Add Fuel® with telematics is also available to Peugeot 108 buyers aged 21-75 who do not have two years’ no claims discount, or have held a full UK driver’s license for less than two years. Despite being part of the new car retailing landscape for five years, Just Add Fuel® remains unique to Peugeot and its customers. For more information or for details on any of the models in the Peugeot range, please contact Warners’ of Gloucester on 01452 529755 or visit the Dealership on Eastern Avenue, Gloucester. Alternatively, contact Warners’ of Tewkesbury on 01684 297575 or visit the Dealership on Shannon Way, Tewkesbury. Town Centre Talking John Lewis will build a brighter future for the whole of Cheltenham The announcement that the John Lewis Partnership is spending £30 million on a landmark new store was described by some as Cheltenham’s worst-kept secret. But in truth, the revelation that one of the high street’s most popular names was to take over the Beechwood shopping centre was an enormous surprise to most. Yes, the negotiations have been going on for some time and the whispers that John Lewis was looking keenly at our town were getting louder. But not only has John Lewis chosen Cheltenham for its first Gloucestershire store, it will involve a complete rebuild of the Beechwood centre and its car park and give the town’s entire retail offering a real shot in the arm. That Gloucestershire focus is a really important one. John Lewis does not currently have a store between Cribbs Causeway and Birmingham. It could have chosen an out-oftown destination anywhere in between – or gone to Gloucester or Worcester.

Instead, it is coming right into the heart of Cheltenham in the way it used to operate in Bristol before it moved out of the city centre in 1998 and opened at was then the new Cribbs Causeway complex. Not only have Bristol shoppers flocked to Cribbs Causeway ever since, but so have many from Gloucestershire and Cheltenham. It may have been a drive, but it was worth the drive. And that is where Cheltenham can now cash in. Not only will those Gloucestershire shoppers be able to stay in the county, others will be attracted to the new store from elsewhere. All may come for John Lewis initially but they will also be spending in other shops, restaurants and businesses in the town. They may get to experience other parts of Cheltenham for the first time. They’ll love The Prom and the independent shopping districts of Montpellier, the Suffolks and Bath Road.

The development timescale also means that by the time John Lewis opens, the Brewery redevelopment will also be complete – and that will be yet another reason to come to town. In the short-term, there are issues around trying to find new homes in Cheltenham for the small number of stores displaced by the John Lewis plan that want to stay in town – and not all do. We also need to ensure that we have the parking provision the town needs both during the Beechwood closure and afterwards. But Cheltenham-based retailers of all kinds have every reason to see a brighter future ahead. - by Kevan Blackadder, Town Centre Manager

Movember: Because Men’s Health Matters

By Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk

MOVEMBER.COM changing the face of mens health

Since 2003, ‘Movember’ has inspired 4 million moustaches worldwide. But what’s it really about? Let’s look behind the moustache. What is MoveMber? The November challenge asks men to grow moustaches and talk about their health, with the aim to increase awareness of men’s health issues and raise funds for the Movember Foundation, a global charity whose mission is “to have an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health”. The Foundation aims to reduce male mortality from prostate and testicular cancer and improve sufferers’ physical and mental health, and to reduce mortality from male suicide by reducing mental health discrimination and ensuring that men and boys understand how to stay mentally healthy, taking action early when they experience problems. So far, it has raised £346 million and financed 800 research and awareness programs in 21 countries. “In the last 10 years or so... we’ve built the largest global men’s health movement off the back of the simple act of growing a moustache and a sense of fun and mateship,” says Adam Garone, CEO and Co-Founder. Why Focus on Men’s health? In 2011, the average UK life expectancy was 82.6 years for women but just 78.7 years for men, who were 14% more likely Page 18

to get cancer and 32% more likely to die from it. Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in 25-49 year olds, but highly curable. 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point. The Foundation believes the main reasons for men’s poor health are: • Lack of awareness and understanding of men’s health issues • Men’s reluctance to discuss their health and feelings or take action when they’re unwell • Engaging in risky activities • Mental health stigmas The Foundation’s most recent research showed that 99% of Movember participants talked to someone about their health, 75% were more aware of potential health issues and 62% had seen a doctor, or intended to, to discover their ‘key numbers’. the MoveMber Foundation’s advice For Men Know your key numbers – ‘one of the most important things you can do,’ whatever your age. Track your body mass index, weight, waistline measurement, blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose levels. Know your family history – including illnesses suffered by family members who have passed away. Keep moving – maintain (or

work up to) 20-30 minutes of moderate physical activity, 2-3 days a week, avoid sitting for too long and stay on the move. take action early – ‘Early diagnosis is often key to living a healthy life’. if there’s nothing wrong, your mind is put at rest. Attend that prostate examination and check your testes regularly (http://www.yourprivates.org.uk/ provides a useful guide). don’t smoke- smoking doubles heart disease risk and makes you 20 times more likely to develop lung cancer. eat well – think moderation and variety. Choose fruits, vegetables, whole grains lean meats, poultry, fish, beans and nuts and minerals, and avoid foods and drinks with added sugars or high saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol and salt. sleep well – lack of sleep and poor quality sleep can damage your immune system and increase appetite and vulnerability to stress. stay mentally healthy – spend time doing things you find enjoyable and relaxing. Be proactive about your mental health. drink alcohol only in moderation Wear sunscreen – and check skin changes with your doctor. Early diagnosis and treatment dramatically increases melanoma survival rates. To find out more, visit https:// uk.movember.com/

MARTIN LEWIS Solar By Martin Lewis @moneysavingexpert

As summer’s rays have faded, the 550,000 Brits with solar panels will stay smiling. Solar panels aren't just an environmental boon, they cut your electricity bills and pay you for generating energy too. However, the amount you can earn from them will likely soon drop again, so if you’re mulling it, it’s worth deciding whether it’s right for you soon. Let me take you through it…

In June the rate dropped from 13.3p/kWh to 12.9p/kWh (in contrast, you pay 9p-13p/kWh for the electricity you use). Yet once panels are installed, the government has said the rate is fixed for 20 years and rises with inflation, so signing up sooner pays more.

How solar panels work

Does buying solar panels still add up?

"Solar power? Hang on, we don't live in California!" may be your first thought. Yet it’s not about the heat, it’s about daylight, so they still generate some electricity on gloomy days – vital in a country with weather as dull as eating rice cakes while waiting in for a delivery.

Back in the day, solar panels were a no-brainer. When the Government launched the feed-in scheme, people typically got a gobsmacking £1,100+ per year in payments, not taking into account electricity savings. Then again, a typical system cost £12,000.

There are actually two types of panels: thermal which just heat the water, and photovoltaic (PV) which generate electricity, and it’s these that all the fuss is about, though you’ll usually need a reasonable sized, unshaded roof, facing south-ish.

Yet now while you earn less, it also costs far less with the price coming down to £5,000-£8,000. For a full detailed analysis and more help, go to www.mse.me/solar, but in a flash...

How solar panels make you money

Here’s some maths based on a typical house in Manchester with a typical 4kWp system:

Financially, there are two reasons to do this: ● You save on electricity bills. The Energy Saving Trust (EST) estimates a typical family can knock around £100/year off their bills, as it cuts the amount of electricity you need to buy. This depends on system size, location, whether you're at home during the day and other factors. ● You get paid for generating. You also get paid a ‘feed-in tariff’ for ALL the energy you generate. Crucially, that’s even if you’re the one using the energy, which once big home storage batteries become commonplace will be even better. The amount you get depends on your system's size, but EST estimates typical payments of £500 a year (tax-free).

- Cost of panels: £6,500 - Annual generation payment: £515 - Annual bill savings: £120 - Total: £635 - Break even estimate: 10 years - Profit at 20 years: £6,200. So with savings rates so low, for someone with a bundle of cash these are a good option to look at. And for some they can pay back even sooner. The key need-to-knows To see whether solar panels are worth it for you and whether you can get them, there are some important need-to-knows: - You need a south-facing roof: Panels need to be on a south-ish facing roof, which isn’t usually shaded.

Please mention Cheltenham Magazine when responding to advertisers

Page 21

- You need a grade D Energy Performance Certificate (EPC): An EPC rates a building on its energy efficiency from A - highly efficient - to G. If you haven’t got grade D or above you get a lower feed-in tariff making it not worth it for most. Go to www.gov.uk/find-an-energyassessor to find an accredited assessor. - You can still switch supplier: Don’t think this locks you into your energy provider. Your energy supplier doesn’t need to be the same supplier as the one that pays your feed-in tariff, so you’re free to switch. And with many people already overpaying by £250 a year that’s definitely worth doing – do a full comparison via my www.cheapenergyclub.co.uk or any Ofgem.gov.uk confidence code site. - The further south you live, the more you can make: The Energy Saving Trust estimates that you could earn £720/year in London, £635 in Manchester and £595 in Edinburgh – as the south gets more daylight. To predict the likely return for your home use the calculator at www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/solar. - Planning permission isn’t usually needed: The big exception is if you’ve a flat roof, your property’s listed or it’s in a conservation area – you may need to get approval from your council’s building team so check with your local authority. - Ensure your fitter’s a member of the Microgeneration Certification Scheme. You can check at www.microgenerationcertification.org. Aren’t they an eyesore? Will it impact the value of my house? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Some people worry that ugly panels plastered all over their roof and the fact that you’re tied in to a contract that remains with the property once you’ve left could push the price of their house down or put off buyers.

Don’t some firms advertise free solar panels? Some companies offer to fit panels free – but do that and they keep the bigger feed-in tariff payments. You just get the £100ish electricity savings, though prices are predicted to rise massively over 20 years. The firms also maintain the panels and pay for insurance. Yet you may not be able to buy out your contract, so bear this in mind – especially if you’re likely to move house – as this could be very unattractive to a future purchaser. I’ve full reviews of the free solar providers at www.mse.me/freesolar. New tool to trick Amazon into giving you free delivery The giant e-retailer used to give free delivery on its goods (not its third party Marketplace sellers) if you spent £10, but in May it increased that to £20. Delivery costs anything from £1.50 to £6, but a new tool (developed by a very clever chap called Adam who used to work for me), SuperSaverDelivery.co.uk scours Amazon for filler items. For example, a £19.72 hairdryer comes with a £6.01 delivery charge so £25.74 total. But the tool shows how you can add a 33p Snickers bar so you’d only pay £20.05. Turn your smartphone into a free holiday sat-nav If it’s got GPS, you can convert it into a free sat-nav for 28 countries without using any pricey data overseas. Just download the maps before you go – Navmii.com is a free app for iPhone, Android, Blackberry and Windows Phone. Once you’ve downloaded it to your phone, it doesn’t need any internet data to find routes, search, or access its maps via GPS, as these are stored offline in your phone.

And the aesthetics are worth considering, though there are ways to fit panels more discretely. Equally, a more efficient home generating its own energy and paying a feed-in tariff could attract buyers.

JOIN OUR DISTRIBUTION TEAM!

If you may one day sell the property, I wouldn’t let it put you off. If you’re selling soon, it’s unlikely to be worth doing as you won’t have time to recoup the amount you shell out and it’s unlikely to add a similar amount to your house value.

Home & Interiors Buying a Bespoke Kitchen

If you have an awkwardly shaped room or want more than one-size-fits-all options, then your obvious choice is a custom-made kitchen. Buying a bespoke kitchen is like asking a tailor to make you a dress - you get a unique and perfectly fitting outfit that makes the most of your best bits and disguises the worst. It’s attractive, comfortable and, whilst more costly, it will always look good and should last a lifetime. In kitchen terms, this means that a bespoke commission can cope with wonky walls, strange dimensions and interesting architectural features, will adapt to whatever’s required of it, whether chaotic family meals or haute cuisine dinner parties, and will use high quality materials that will stand the test of time. What’s more, you’re guaranteed that it’s one of a kind.

Why buy bespoke?

With an off-the-peg kitchen your choices are limited to a selection of door styles, carcass

sizes and worktops, but that’s about it. If your wall is a few centimetres longer than the standard run of cupboards, you’ll end up with a gap. It might be called a tray slot or space for a pull-out towel rail, but it’s still a gap. A bespoke kitchen, on the other hand, will be built to the exact dimensions of the room, and can include extra-high base units, extra-deep worktops and a combination of different materials. You can choose the type of timber or the colour of the paint, and you can specify any worktop, handle or appliance you like - even special matching sockets can be fitted. As managing director and chief designer Andrew Hall, of Woodstock Furniture, says: ‘The beauty of a bespoke kitchen design service is that you end up with an ergonomic, cohesive and unified space that is completely unique and tailored to your individual needs.’

All in the detail

With a bespoke kitchen, no detail is spared. It may be the dovetailing of the drawers or the way veneers are matched so they run perfectly across from one cupboard or drawer to the next. It may be the combination of base and wall

By Katherine Sorrell

cupboards, perhaps with open shelves and free-standing dressers; or it may be the size and shape of the island unit. Special appliances or cooking utensils can be measured and interiors designed to suit, for the ultimate, ‘everything in its place’ room that combines good looks with functionality.

Working with a designer

Before contacting a bespoke kitchen company, start by considering what type of kitchen you want; otherwise, the possibilities could be overwhelming. Many people find it helpful to keep a scrapbook of designs they like. That said, an experienced designer will be able to guide you through the maze of choices, asking the right questions about your style and how you use your kitchen in order to reach the best design. There will be one or more site visits for consultations, planning and measuring up, followed by drawings and costings. Once you have approved these, it will take several weeks or even months for your furniture to be hand-built and, during this time, you should complete any structural work. Then your units will be fitted by an expert team and templates made for worktops and splashbacks – which will then be made to measure. Finally, there’s likely to be a sign-off visit to fine-tune any problems and check that you’re happy with the result.

Chalk Talk Cheltenham is back. That's the message following John Lewis' decision to open a flagship store in the centre of town. Cheltenham is a superb retail destination with a rich variety of independent shops. But local rivals have been chipping away over the last decade to try and steal our crown. They've made too much headway for my liking. This announcement shows we're fighting back. On top of new jobs, this investment will help cement our reputation for shopping excellence. It will attract new visitors and increase footfall. That in turn will mean more customers for our brilliant independent retailers. But anyone who thinks we can now afford to relax and lose focus is plain wrong. Competition hasn't gone away. Shoppers can choose from a bewildering number of destinations, from a resurgent Gloucester, to Oxford and Cribbs Causeway. That's why this announcement should not be the end of our efforts; it should be the beginning.

The Lions Club of Cheltenham

Now is the time to press home our advantage and redouble our efforts to make Cheltenham the pre-eminent regional shopping destination. To achieve that we have to do two things: First, we have to make parking cheaper. It is simply not sustainable to have a system where parking in town is significantly more expensive and less flexible than in rival centres. We need to bring the cost down and pilot imaginative schemes to attract visitors. I have proposed my '30-for-30' scheme (30 minutes for 30p) but there are plenty of other proposals that should be considered. I understand the council is now going to review parking. I wish them every success. There's no time to lose. Second, we need to tidy up our town. There are far too many 'grot spots', from unsightly tarmac in-fills in the High Street to derelict buildings and litter-strewn verges. They let the town down. It's why I launched my grot spot campaign, even raising in Parliament the issue of the decaying Springbank Shopping

The Lions Club of Cheltenham has many supporters who help in many ways, and over 20 members committed to run all the projects. Many friends of Lions occasionally help out at the big events of the year. This involved carrying out diverse taks such as delivering leaflets or marshalling. Some will provide cash.

Centre and old Carlton Street Post Office. It's also why earlier this month I was delighted to join the plucky Wombles as they rolled up their sleeves to clear vast amounts of rubbish from the St James' car park grot spot. It was great to see people coming together from all walks of life for the benefit of Cheltenham. It shows that Cheltonians are doers, not talkers. So, let's be proud of Cheltenham and ambitious for our future. Cheltenham is roaring back. But let's make sure we're back for good!

- by Alex Chalk

A very enjoyable method of helping the Lions is to join the Lions Club of Cheltenham 200 Supporters Club. It costs £13 a year, which buys you 2 chances every month to win £25 and 2 chances every year to win £200. In other words, £1000 of prizes are available for a maximum of 200 supporters for only £13 each. And all the proceeds are for charity, mostly for the needy of Cheltenham. Autumn Planning and Planting by Pippa Greenwood There is no doubt that the main growing season is over for the year and autumn is now very much with us, which makes it a perfect time to review exactly how your garden looks at this time of year and to do some planning and planting too. If everything is looking a bit glum, why not make sure that for years to come you have many rich autumnal shades of orange, red, yellow and gold to brighten things up? There are numerous trees, shrubs and climbers with brilliant autumn colour and now is the perfect time for planting, as the soil should still be relatively warm and considerably more moist than it was during summer. It is also a perfect time to shop for plants which you can enjoy at this time of year, giving you the chance to see the plants ‘in the flesh’ and find out which individual tints and hues you find the most attractive. Make sure that you check the growing requirements of the trees and shrubs you choose carefully and ensure that you can supply them with exactly what they need, as soil and site conditions can hugely influence autumn colour. For instance, one of my real favourites is the sweet gum or Liquidambar but this is unlikely to produce the striking colour for which it is renowned if planted in a relatively shallow soil over

chalk. You should also try to choose a relatively sheltered site for plants grown for autumn colour, avoiding the most windswept areas where strong winds will rapidly knock the leaves from the shrub or tree just when the plant has come into the best of its autumnal shades. The ultimate choice of plants will be largely determined by the conditions in and the size of your garden, so a trip to your local garden centre is worthwhile. The Japanese crimson glory vine (Vitis coignetiae) is a fabulous ornamental vine which can grow to a height of 90 feet, so can be used to train over trees or large buildings. Its toothed leaves turn a range of purple, crimson and reddish-orange colours in autumn. Some viburnums, including Viburnum dentatum, also have lovely autumn colours and for bright yellow autumn foliage then the witch hazels (Hamamelis and Fothergilla) are some of my favourites, although they prefer an acid soil. The numerous maples, particularly the Japanese maples, not only bring vibrant colours into your garden during autumn but being relatively small or very slow growing are suitable for most plots. There are lots of different types of Acer palmatum which

bring lovely colour, including Acer palmatum ‘Lutesens’, which turns a rich yellowish gold, ‘Crimson Queen’, ‘Trompenburg’, ‘Garnet’ and ‘Seiryu’, ‘Osakazuki’, ‘Orange Dream’, ‘Heptalobum’ and Acer palmatum ‘dissectum’ and Acer palmatum ‘dissectum atropurpureum’, and also the beautiful leaves of Acer palmatum ‘Beni-Shidare’. Whatever you choose it is important to make sure that the plants’ root balls are thoroughly watered and teased out, before being placed in a well prepared planting hole. Plant at the correct depth, so that the shrub or tree is buried to the same depth as it was whilst in the compost. Always keep the soil just moist around the roots, both now and throughout next year, to help them get well established so you can enjoy them for years to come. Make vegetable growing fun and productive with Pippa’s unique ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ system. Select your vegetable plants from www. pippagreenwood.com and your garden-ready plants are delivered in May; what makes it unique is that Pippa will email you every week with lots of tips and help about what you’re growing, ensuring great results. It is great value and various pack sizes are available, e.g. up to 55 plants for just £29.00, plus that weekly advice. Gifts Cards are also available.

Golden Years

Memories of 50 Years Ago by Ted Bruning

The only known photograph of the death sentence being passed in an English court.

On 13th August 1964, Gwynne Owen and Peter Allen were hanged for the robbery and murder of a van driver. Owen was a mentally unstable drifter, Allen a feckless petty criminal. The murder was out of character, and most observers were surprised when they weren’t reprieved. But their case wasn’t all that unusual, and didn’t attract any more than the usual amount of media attention. There was, though, one extraordinary thing about Owen and Allen: they were the last people in Britain to be executed. On 8th November 1965 a Private Member’s Bill introduced by Labour backbencher Sidney Silverman received the royal assent, and hanging was abolished. This didn’t come out of the blue. Capital punishment had become extremely unpopular and its abolition was mostly welcomed by the public. Three high-profile miscarriages of justice – or perceived miscarriages of justice – had gone some way towards discrediting the idea and, to undermine it further, the public had lost confidence in the way the Home Office decided who should live and who should die. The first of the three cases was a straightforward wrongful conviction. In March 1950 Timothy Evans was hanged for the murder of his daughter

Geraldine; it subsequently emerged that both she and her mother Beryl were actually victims of John Christie, who murdered eight women in his west London house of horrors – 10 Rillington Place – between 1943 and 1953. The other two cases were more controversial. Derek Bentley was hanged in January 1953 for the murder of a policeman during a burglary. The actual shooter, Christopher Craig, was a minor and got life. Bentley was 19 and got death. Then in July 1955 28-year-old Ruth Ellis was hanged for shooting dead her violent boyfriend outside a Hampstead pub. He had beaten and deserted her, and she was in a hysterical and desperate state when she finally snapped. Both were guilty. But both had the public’s sympathy, and people expected them to be reprieved as nearly half of all convicted murderers were. And when no reprieves came, what really infuriated public opinion was that the decisions had been taken behind closed doors by Home Office officials on legal considerations alone without regard to public feeling. The outcry was such that the number of death sentences actually carried out thereafter fell to a trickle: in 1964 Owen and Allen were the rope’s only victims. Harold Wilson, Prime Minister

from October 1964, had long been a campaigner against hanging and supported Silverman to the hilt. The bill was intended to last five years – as, indeed, had two previous identical bills introduced by Silverman – and it wasn’t until December 1969 that it was made permanent and the hangman’s rope was finally put away forever. As many had predicted, abolition was followed by a steep climb in the murder rate, clearly proving that hanging had the deterrent effect its supporters claimed for it. But then the murder rate flattened out, then it soared again, then after peaking at over 1,000 in 2002 it halved in 10 years. Hard to say anything definitive about deterrence from a rollercoaster like that! What we have learned, though, is that the number of wrongful convictions such as those of the Birmingham Six is frighteningly high: one can’t help wondering just how many of those hanged before 8th November 1965 had done nothing wrong? There are, of course, some who maintain that the deterrent effect of hanging is so important that it really doesn’t matter that, inevitably, a few innocents will be killed; they might reconsider, perhaps, if they found themselves in Timothy Evans’s place!

Frozen stars, Father Christmas and free parking - a sack load of Christmassy fun Thurs 26 Nov in Regent Arcade Elsa, Anna and Olaf will be making a special trip to the Regent Arcade on Thursday 26 November to help Father Christmas officially switch-on the lights. The Frozen stars will be part of a fun packed evening to welcome in the festive season. The event will also launch late night shopping and the borough council’s free car parking offer at two town centre car parks. In the build up to the excitement, the town centre will be buzzing from 4pm with street entertainers, including stilt walkers, street dancers and live music. The Frozen characters and Father Christmas will arrive at the Regent

Shopmobility in Cheltenham is on the move Cheltenham’s Shopmobility is moving offices and will be opening at 30 St Georges Place, Cheltenham, GL50 3JZ on Tuesday 3 November. The new office is behind the library and The Wilson Art Gallery, off Clarence Street, providing closer access to the bus hubs, High Street and The Brewery. Currently the service is located in the Beechwood Arcade but is moving because it has been served notice to quit. Cheltenham Shopmobilty provides equipment to help people of all ages who, for a variety of reasons, have difficulty getting around in Cheltenham town centre. Over the summer a consultation took place with users of the service, local charities and interest groups to find out their views on the

Arcade at 5pm to meet and greet families, before they officially turn on all of Cheltenham’s lights at the switch of a button at 7pm. Breeze FM will add to the arcade’s party atmosphere with plenty of music and chat. Scott Lahive, Regent Arcade centre manager said: “Christmas is a very special time for us here at the Regent Arcade. When the decorations go up and our ever popular walk-through Christmas tree appears, the arcade is transformed into a magical festive wonderland for young and old alike. The lights switch on is one of the highlights of our year and we’re very excited to welcome the Frozen stars this time.” The light switch-on also marks the start of 4 weeks of late night shopping, every Thursday from 26 November through until 17 December. The majority of town centre shops will remain open until 9pm. What’s more, shoppers can enjoy free parking from 5.30pm until 9pm on each of these Thursdays at Regent Arcade and

Town Centre East car parks. The free parking and extended hours will also apply to Black Friday, when lots of shops will hold special offers on Friday 27 November. Kevan Blackadder, town centre manager said: “The evening will not only mark the switch-on of the lights but also a great new scheme to provide free parking for all those who want to take advantage of late-night shopping in the town. “We hope that moving the switch on to a Thursday evening this year and combining it with the parking offer will prove popular with families and shoppers alike.” Saturday 28 November, as The Brewery hold their Christmas party from 5-8pm.

welcoming users to the new offices on Tuesday 3 November.”

Cllr Rowena Hay, cabinet member for healthy lifestyles, says: “The re-location allows us to continue to provide the Shopmobility service in the town so it can continue to offer a valuable lifeline to those who use it. The new location allows us to look at long term solutions and ways to improve the service.”

The meet and greet service will still be provided. The email address (shopmobility@cheltenham.gov. uk) will not change. Users are asked to call 07340 291370 if they are unable to get through on the usual phone number (01242 255333).

Wilf Tomaney, townscape manager for Cheltenham Borough Council, continues: “The consultation acknowledged significant support for the continued provision of a Shopmobility service in the town and being close to car parking is favoured. In considering various options 30 St George’s Place was deemed the most appropriate. There is a drop-off point at the new office and parking is available in nearby car parks. The location is also close to bus hubs and the High Street. “The staff are excited about the move and are looking forward to

Finance Boost Your Income in Time for Christmas By Ann Haldon

With Christmas fast approaching it’s worthwhile trying to boost your income to cover some of the cost rather than over-using your credit card. So to avoid a huge bill in January and get the New Year off to a good start, try one or two of these ideas and generate some extra cash. Use cashback sites when buying your presents If you like to shop online at Christmas, you might be surprised by just how much cash you can get back when using sites such as Quidco and TopCashBack. There’s no charge to sign up, and depending on the item purchased you can get between 3% and 10% of your money back. Generate extra cash on eBay and Amazon Not only will you declutter and make space for the next influx of presents, selling items online can generate some much-needed extra money at this time of year. There are hundreds of eBay categories, and once you get into a routine of photographing and describing your items, it’s possible to significantly boost your Christmas budget. Amazon is great for selling books, CDs and DVDs that

you no longer want, but they also offer hundreds of different item categories within their marketplace. If you have a lot of books to sell it can be quicker to list them on Amazon rather than eBay, as all you need to do is input the ISBN or title. The site then searches for the book and automatically adds postage, so all you need to do is write a short description. Use the popularity of local Facebook pages Many people use Facebook to sell goods locally. It works like a classified ad – you list your item and local people come round to view it before purchasing with cash. The local online groups are run by volunteers, and the listing is free-of-charge which saves you money in comparison with eBay and Amazon. Become a mystery shopper If you’ve got time to spare, this can be a lucrative sideline and offers a great deal of variety. Depending on the mystery shopping company, you could be carrying out a covert visit to a store, ordering a sandwich in Subway or checking out the service in your local bank. You’ll need to fill in a report online following each visit, and photograph or scan your receipts as proof that you’ve

carried it out. Make sure that you read the instructions thoroughly before you set out, however, as you won’t get paid if you don’t follow them to the letter. Turn your hobby into a business The UK arts and crafts scene has risen massively in popularity, and there is a range of websites where you can sell your items. Folksy is one of the biggest of these in the UK, and offers lots of help to set up your account. If you prefer to sell in person, however, try a Christmas craft fair in your local area – there should be lots of trade and it helps that people can see the quality of items first-hand. You’ll probably find that your local school or garden centre hold a craft event leading up to Christmas. Alternatively, bigger venues such as National Trust properties or stately homes in your area are also popular locations for craft fairs all year round. These are just a few ideas for boosting your income – try picking one or two and you might find that you’ve got some money to spare in January. http://www.moneysavingexpert. com/family/make-money
