GLOS DIRECTORIES | LOCAL HISTORY

Tewkesbury’s Treasure – “ill-gotten gains”? In the last edition, we considered whether the Town’s historic buildings should be regarded as “millstones around the neck” of posterity. Perhaps the most beautiful is our Town Hall, whose High Street façade is the second largest stone building in the town after the Abbey. We noted that the Council was bankrupt because of £1,200 borrowed from its own M.P., Sir William Codrington, in 1788 to build this municipal monument. It is, moreover, interesting to reflect that the source of this generosity was the fortune his family had derived in the West Indies – dependent on the use of slavery. Tewkesbury was represented by two MPs and, until the Great Reform Act of 1832, they were usually county

aristocrats with large country estates who passed the role from one generation to the next. Elections were necessary but tedious and expensive – and usually a forgone conclusion. In 1792, however, Sir William was a very worried man, as he had been opposed by a very well organised campaign mounted by Slavery Abolitionists. Codrington was a worthy target, as he was amongst the richest of the West Indian sugar planters who were dependent on the exploitation of slaves on their plantations.

This portrait - rightly - dominates the Council Chamber of the Town Hall. Page 6

Originally political fugitives on the losing side of the English Civil War, the Codringtons came to dominate the economy of the islands of Barbados and Antigua in particular. To the north of that country lay the island of Barbuda which was legally owned by the Codringtons. So successful were they in their new way of life, that Christopher Codrington, second generation, left a fortune in his will. Social recognition followed in 1721, when King George II raised them to being Baronets – with the right to the title of “Sir” which was bequeathed from one generation to the next. Such was their wealth, they purchased Doddington House, north of Bristol, the leading West Indian port of the 18th century. [Now James Dysons’ home]

GLOS DIRECTORIES | LOCAL HISTORY Opposed in 1792 by a Capt. LLOYD, of the Navy, whose character was marked as “a worthy and independent man, and a most zealous friend to the Abolition”, Codrington had to marshal all his forces for a difficult fight. One tried and tested method was that he used his wealth to purchase cottages in Tewkesbury. Then they were let cheaply to tenants - providing they voted for him. [We have to be aware that, before 1872, general elections were not secret and each of the few voters had to announce in public their choice!] Another bribe was the “Codrington Half Guinea” which today is worth about £33.

keen to sell up and return home. The proceeds, including the compensation, were used to purchase properties or businesses in the UK – and soon people would forget the tainted source of that wealth. Defenders of the Codringtons would underline their philanthropy – after all Codrington College in Barbados, for the training of Negro priests, was paid for by them. - John Dixon President of the Tewkesbury Historical Society This whole fascinating

topic has been researched by

What appears to be a redundant door in the café belonging to Greggs was, in fact, once the entrance to Codringtons Alley, home to his tenants – and loyal voters. The bribery and corruption was successful: Sir William was re-elected - but never again could the result be seen as a foregone conclusion.

The fight for the Abolition of Slavery was a long one; in 1807 some progress was made when the slave trade only was abolished in the British Empire (then the most powerful) but it was only on 1 August 1834 that Slavery itself was abolished. The British Government awarded £20m in compensation – an amount which represented 40% of government expenditure. However, it was not for the slaves – but for slave owners, deprived of their property! On reason that slavery ended was that the cultivation of sugar in the West Indies was no longer profitable and so the slave owners were Please mention GLOS DIRECTORIES when responding to advertisers

The Better Life The Zen of Chickens You can learn a lot about life from a chicken. Behind that beak and those golden eyes lies a creature bristling with poultry wisdom. Here’s a sample of what I’ve picked up from both Sweet Pea and Pepperoni. Be in the moment. Chickens seem to have a very short attention span, unless they’re on the trail of a worm. However, they’re actually demonstrating an ability to detach from the superficial, which – to a chicken – is anything inedible.

learned early on that it’s wise to keep out of the path of a broody, moody hen. She also discovered they can run surprisingly fast and launch themselves at unwitting felines. Me? I learned that the term ‘an affectionate peck’ doesn’t apply to poultry.

Be curious about the world. Chickens are life’s little explorers. They can find that hole in the fence which I blocked with some feeble bamboo canes and never got round to repairing properly, the last wild strawberry, or a snail who thought hiding behind the coop was a foolproof survival strategy.

Make time to relax. When they’re not eating, advertising their egg-laying prowess, playing tug-of-war with snails or enjoying dirt baths, chickens like nothing better than sitting still and watching the world go by. Or, if it’s a sunny day, a spot of Chicken Yoga might be in order. You can forget about downward dog, cat posture or doing the cobra. For chickens, the yogic routine is a few luxurious wing stretches, some flexing of the neck and then it’s time to sprawl out in the warm. And if it’s cold outside? They snuggle up together in what I call the ‘tea cosies’ posture.

Celebrate your successes. The commotion a chicken makes before, while and after laying an egg is surely one of Nature’s cruellest jokes. Short of ringing a dinner bell, it’s the most efficient way of summoning any fox within a two-mile radius. Despite that, I defy any smallholder not to be impressed at the ‘scraps, grain and grit in, followed by egg and fertiliser poop out’ magic trick performed most days. Be how you feel. Our cat Page 8

Eat your greens – and give peas a chance. Impressionable children the world over would have no qualms about devouring chard, lettuce or spinach (to name but three) if they had a chicken for a role model.

And, being life’s gourmet connoisseurs, chickens will also happily try tomatoes, grapes, porridge, roast potatoes, bananas, raisins and spaghetti. Although someone we once met, who declared that she fed her hens leftover bacon and eggs did, I GLOS DIRECTORIES | GENER feel, overstep the mark a little. The early bird really does get the worm. Although the slightly delayed bird may succeed in taking it off you, if you don’t pay attention. Opportunity not only knocks, it grabs too. Care for your environment. Once again, chickens lead by example. Whether it’s pulling up the weeds*, providing some essential pest control or aerating the soil, chickens are constantly on the lookout for ways to contribute. * A word of caution - an unchecked chicken gets a little over enthusiastic in its garden duties! Play to your strengths. Chickens don’t fly or glide and their singing isn’t up to much. But...they don’t waste food, or an opportunity, and they make eggcellent companions. By Derek Thompson

A new hue can take years off your age, emphasise your best features and leave your complexion looking radiant. It’s crucial to get it right though, because if you pick the wrong colour you can be left with an unflattering and disappointing result. Your hair is undoubtedly your best accessory, so it’s crucial to think carefully before doing anything drastic or making a hasty change. Here’s our guide to what to consider before you reach for the hair dye. Page 10

Start with Your Skin Tone Whether you fancy being a blonde, brunette or redhead, it’s important to identify whether your natural complexion is warm or cool. This determines what colour base you should look for when you pick your shade.

one. Decide which looks better with your colouring, does the white enhance your eyes and skin? If so, you’re cool. If the cream looks best, then you’re warm. Consider your jewellery; does gold suit you better than silver? If so, your skin tone is warm. If silver looks stunning, then you’re cool.

To find out which category you fall into, try this simple test:

Cool Colours

Stand in front of a mirror in natural light with no makeup on. Hold a white garment by your face, then do the same with a cream coloured

If your skin colouring is cool, you should choose an ash, mink or even platinum blonde shade if you fancy a blonde hue.

Get Motivated! We can all feel de-motivated at times, so if January has passed you by without starting any of those New Year resolutions, turn February into the month you take some positive steps to regain control. Trying to achieve all that you want in the coming year may feel like an impossible task and it can lead to feeling totally de-motivated. Motivation is key to our creativity, productivity and happiness. When we are motivated we feel like we can take on any challenge, meet any deadline and work through any problem to achieve our goal, whether that’s personal satisfaction or public recognition for a job well done. But once demotivation sets in, then even the smallest task can seem insurmountable.

Set small goals

If you’ve given yourself a big goal this year, such as losing a large amount of weight or changing jobs, break it into small, short term goals. Give yourself weekly targets – losing 5lbs or re-writing your CV - and then congratulate yourself on achieving them. By doing this you are building up positive ‘credits’ in your mind, keeping you going for the following week.

Be inspired

Richard Branson has had a few business failures which he’s written about in his autobiographies. But these set-backs didn’t stop him - he Page 12

just tried again. It can be really uplifting to read about other people’s successes. There are also a lot of self-help and business books available which can help you to think about what you do and don’t want. A good one to start with is the international best-seller, Who Moved My Cheese? (Dr Spencer Johnson, Vermilion)

Stay focused

Don’t give yourself too many goals to aim for at once. Focus on one, work out how best to achieve it (in small steps, if needed) and work your way through it before starting on your next goal. Diffusing your energy by trying to change too many things at once will just mean you are less likely to keep up your motivation. So prioritise, write yourself a list and start with number one.

Talk about it

A great motivator is other people. If you tell people that you’re going to start writing that novel this month or apply for the local half marathon, you’re much more likely to do it. Talk to friends, family and work colleagues - their gentle nudges or encouragement will help to keep you on track. Putting up little post-it notes to remind yourself of your goals

and why you want to achieve them will help keep you motivated and on track, too.

Reward yourself

For every achievement, however big or small, reward yourself - you deserve it.

Reject negative thoughts

How many times do you find yourself saying ‘I can’t do it’, ‘it won’t happen’, or ‘it’s too hard’? Negative thoughts can really bring you down, so give yourself a buzz word or mantra to repeat immediately when a negative thought pops into your head. ‘I’m doing it.’

Look at the positive

Starting to exercise, cutting down on unhealthy food, changing jobs, starting your own business. None of these are easy. Accept that there will be set-backs and bad days or bad weeks. But keep looking at the positives - what did you manage to achieve this week, or how are you going to do better next week? So plan ahead, have lots of small goals to help you reach your big goal, accept there will be set-backs and look at how other people have done what you would like to do. And keep going - you’re doing great!

Satay Vegetable Skewers Ready in 30 minutes

Serves 4

If you are short on time but still want a flavoursome supper then try these delicious vegetable kebabs with a lovely spicy peanut sauce and spring onion noodles. For non-veggie kebabs replace the aubergine with cubes of lean pork or chicken fillet and cook for 15-20 minutes until the meat is cooked through and lightly charred.

Ingredients: • 100g crunchy peanut butter • 25g creamed coconut, chopped • 1/2 tsp chilli powder • 1 garlic clove peeled and crushed • 4 tbsp soy sauce • 3 small peppers (red, green and yellow), deseeded and cut into 2.5cm pieces • 4 thick slices of aubergine • 1 large red onion, peeled and cut into slim wedges • 3 tbsp sesame oil • 4 nests fine egg noodles • 4 spring onions, trimmed and finely sliced

Tip: If you don’t have a griddle pan cook the kebabs under a pre-heated grill or use a heavybased shallow frying pan and add a little oil.

Page 14

Place the peanut butter, coconut, chilli powder and garlic in a small pan with 180ml water. Heat gently, stirring all the time, for 2-3 minutes until the coconut has dissolved and the sauce has thickened. Remove from the heat, stir in half the soy sauce. Thin down with a little more water to get a pouring consistency, if necessary. Par-boil the peppers in a pan of boiling water for 2 minutes, drain well and pat dry with kitchen paper. Cut the aubergine slices into quarters. Thread the peppers and aubergine onto 8 pre-soaked wooden skewers with the onion wedges. Preheat a cast-iron griddle pan until almost smoking. Whisk 2 tbsp of the oil and remaining soy sauce together and brush all over the vegetable kebabs. Cook the kebabs on the hot griddle pan for 6-8 minutes, turning frequently until tender and lightly charred. Meanwhile, cook the noodles in a large pan of boiling water for 3-4 minutes until just tender. Drain well and toss together with the rest of the sesame oil and the spring onions. Serve the kebabs on the noodles and drizzle over the satay sauce.

Time For A Spring Clean By Claudia Leaf I had invited an old school friend around for coffee and was trying hard to make a good impression. Suddenly a shaft of spring sunlight flooded my lounge, making me cringe with embarrassment. With a growing sense of shame I watched as this unforgiving shaft of light slid across the room, showing up the grubby finger marks on the door, the ring marks on my glass table and a thick layer of dust on the mantelpiece. When it finally landed at my friend’s feet, close to a dirty paw mark our dog had left on the carpet, I saw a look of alarm on her face. “I’m so sorry, I’ve just noticed. Did I do that?” I had a nanosecond to decide whether I should openly confess my domestic shortcomings or keep quiet. “Oh, don’t worry”, I replied. “It’ll brush off when it’s dry.” She left soon afterwards, still apologising. I took a deep breath and realised it was time for some spring cleaning. An article in the Manufacturer and Builder magazine of 1872 (a “practical journal of industrial progress”) describes spring cleaning as “The season of general cleaning, when all the corners and Page 16

closets are overturned and hidden things are brought to light”. Whilst period dramas such as “Downton Abbey” have inspired a new generation to revive traditional kitchen skills, it’s questionable whether 21st century householders will be tempted to adopt the cleaning methods recommended by the magazine, which include black-leading grates, whitewashing walls and scalding bedsteads. The Victorians may have excelled at spring cleaning but they certainly didn’t invent it. Some historians believe that the origins of this tradition date back to the ancient Persian New Year, the Iranian Norouz, which falls on the first day of spring. Iranians still practice “khooneh tekouni” – which literally translates as ‘shaking the house’ – at this time. The Jewish feast of Passover is a religious festival that also hints at a possible origin for spring cleaning. During the holiday the faithful are instructed to refrain from eating any leavened foodstuffs (‘chametz’). The Bible commands that even tiny crumbs must be removed from the house and this results in a ritual hunt for crumbs by candlelight during the evening before the holiday begins.

Christianity has its own spring cleaning traditions. In Greece, householders clean everything thoroughly either before or during the first week of Lent, as a physical manifestation of Lent’s message of spiritual cleansing and renewal. For the ancient Chinese, the concept of New Year cleaning is associated with good fortune. They believed that people should sweep their floors and clean their houses to rid them of any negative influences that may have accumulated during the last twelve months. Householders then locked up the broom for a few days to prevent sweeping away any good luck that might have entered at the turn of the year. When ancient cultures share such similar traditions it’s hard to say exactly when and where the idea of ‘spring cleaning’ originated. However, it’s obvious that the urge to clear away the cobwebs of winter and prepare for the summer months is hard-wired into human DNA. Personally I believe that our seasonal enthusiasm to get busy with a mop and broom is always motivated by the same thing: it’s that accusing beam of sunlight that shows us up in front of guests.

The true cost of a kitchen Painted Ivory is a new colourway for John Lewis’s popular Vermont kitchen, from its Core Collection.

Designing your kitchen

Using a designer is the most expensive option. Check whether they price per hour or per job, and what’s included. A much cheaper option is to design it yourself, as well as source all components such as units, worktops and appliances. Many people choose the middle option of using their kitchen supplier’s design and installation service. If you’re asked to take your own measurements, be careful: even in a new-build, walls are not always true and the surfaces flat. Take at least three measurements at floor, work-surface and wall unit height, and work to the smallest width. If you’re using a mid-range or luxury kitchen supplier, you may be asked to pay a fee for them to measure up and produce a set of drawings.

Comparing prices

When comparing prices, ensure that you know exactly what you’re buying – a cheap option can cost considerably more if you end up paying for extra work. Ask the right questions. Will they dispose of existing fittings? Prepare plumbing and electrical work? Carry out associated building work? Fit floor and wall finishes? What about final decorating, electrical work Page 18

How do you ensure value for money when fitting a new kitchen?

and other carpentry such as shelving? Who will fit worktops, sinks, taps and appliances? Is there a guarantee and aftersales service?

Checking for quality

Budget suppliers will give you machine-made units, whereas luxury ones offer hand-built cupboards by cabinet-makers. These aren’t necessarily poor quality, though they will have “plant-on” doors that sit in front of the frame, rather than “in-frame” doors, individually made to fit perfectly inside their frames.

Doors

Solid-wood doors with traditional mortise and tenon joints are the highest quality. In-frame doors may expand and contract with the humidity. Good suppliers offer an aftersales service to check their fitting after a few months. Veneered doors are cheaper and easier to maintain. Check whether painted doors are machine-sprayed, or painted by hand with a brush.

Carcasses

Top-of-the-range carcasses are made of solid wood. Nextlevel-down ones are usually made from plywood or MDF veneer, while cheaper ones are chipboard, sometimes with just hardboard backs. Check the thickness of the chipboard – 18-20mm is a good guide.

Hinges

Poor hinges are usually made from thin metal and will wear so thin that the doors hang unevenly. While many people are happy with good quality Blum or Blumstyle hinges (concealed, adjustable and available in a variety of specifications), solid brass butts are better. Check whether hinges open through a complete 180 degree angle.

Worktops

Very cheap laminate worktops can burn, scratch and wear out quickly. High-pressure laminates are more durable than low-pressure ones; check that the underside is sealed to prevent water damage from appliances beneath. In a more luxurious kitchen package, you’ll be offered solid wood (at least 4cm thick is best), granite (3cm), man-made solid surfaces (such as Corian) or even glass or concrete.

Installation

A good fitter can make an average kitchen appear fantastic, whereas poor fitting will make the most luxurious kitchen look terrible. Consider this if you’re planning on doing it yourself. If you’re using a fitter, ask to see examples of their work. When buying an expensive, bespoke kitchen, it’s wise to use the company’s own fitters.

Hidden Algarve Long ago in the Algarve, says the legend, a Nordic princess pined for her frozen homeland until her husband, the King of the Moors, planted thousands of almond trees. The snow-white blossom soon brought a smile to her lips and to this day almost every house in the Algarve looks out to an almond tree. In the lush rolling hills of the interior, the trees herald the first days of spring, flowering among vineyards, orange groves, fig and carob trees. Just a stone’s throw away from the coast, it’s a quiet land of orchards and meadows, meandering lanes and forests and redroofed villages tucked in the greenery, their whitewashed houses topped by filigree chimney pots, in Moorish style, and rooftop terraces where laundry and fruit dry side by side. Goats wander across the road and sometimes a donkey and cart rattle along the cobbled streets. Up there, the cool wooded slopes of the Serra de Monchique are dotted with rivers and lakes, moors and dark forests where rosemary and oleander splash colour in the clearings. The fragrance of eucalyptus and pine follows you along the trails but you find swathes of chestnut and oak and ‘strawberry trees’ whose innocent-looking berries are eagerly collected to make the local firewater. It’s a paradise Page 20

for ramblers and birdwatchers hoping to spot goshawks and royal eagles. With a subtropical micro-climate, mountain and sea all in one, the Serra claims over 1000 species of plants but now and then a church bell chiming in the distance betrays the presence of an isolated village, perched on a terraced slope where vegetables and fruit compete for space. The road to the top winds past the spa resort of Caldas de Monchique, once the site of Roman baths and the place where King Joao II came to take the waters in search of a cure, in the late 15th century. Now the emphasis is on beauty and well being, pampering and relaxation. In a deep wooded glen, quaint buildings gather around a shaded square and you are welcome to stroll in the park, quench your thirst and best of all, make a wish at the Fountain of Youth. Beyond this charming watering place, you reach the rustic hill town of Monchique, once a prosperous weaving centre for wool and cloth,

still famous today for a wide range of craft, linen, wicker baskets, tree sculptures, wooden spoons, dried flowers and scissor chairs, invented, some say, by the Romans and so-named because of the way they fold up. All sorts of goods spill out on the pavements but step inside and you may find the shopkeeper quietly nursing her baby while grandma is shelling peas for the family’s supper. Then follow the lanes climbing up to the square and the whole town is at your feet, tumbling down the hillside among camellias, hydrangeas and fruit trees. The panorama is superb but anyone with a head for heights and twisty roads will also enjoy the drive up to Foia, just five miles away and the highest point at nearly 3,000 feet. Standing on the summit, battling with the wind, you feel like the knights of yore surveying the wild rolling lands of the Algarve, from the verdant slopes of the Serra to the coastal plain and the Atlantic glistening like silver on the horizon. Little Wonders How little tablets can be cheap and cheerful

Tablets are wonderful things, but they can be pricey: while £400 isn’t much compared to the price of a high-end laptop, it’s still £400. But you don’t need to spend that much to find a perfectly good tablet: in fact, there are good ones for as little as £99.

it’s Google’s own device it’s a proper Android tablet without the customisation that some manufacturers add to the operating system. Once again it’s a seven-inch device with a powerful processor, integrated Wi-Fi wireless networking and good battery life.

The £99 tablet is Amazon’s Kindle Fire, which dropped from £129 to £99 in November (if it’s gone back up again, don’t worry - you can be sure the price will fall again very soon). While it isn’t exactly state of the art it’s still a perfectly decent tablet for watching videos, playing Angry Birds, using Facebook and so on.

There are two other £159 tablets to consider: the Kobo Arc and the Nook HD. The former comes from Kobo, Amazon’s main rival in the ereading sector, and it’s aimed primarily at e-book readers who fancy the odd video, song or bit of web browsing, while the latter is by US bookselling giant Barnes & Noble and hopes to carve a niche offering electronic magazines as well as apps. Technically speaking they’re very good - the Nook HD in particular has a wonderful screen, is very light and easy to use - but tablets rise and fall on the strength of their content libraries and Amazon has the edge in that department. If you want a tablet that has lots of stuff to choose from and which is very easy to use, the Kindle Fire HD will look very attractive; if you’re more techy and want something you can fiddle with too, Google’s Nexus is more

If you fancy something a little more powerful but not much more expensive, Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD is very good too. It boasts a much better screen, which is superb for video, and comes with more storage, faster Wi-Fi wireless networking and a faster processor. Prices start at just £159 for the 16GB model. Before you spend £159, though, check out Google’s offering, the Nexus 7. Like the Kindle Fire it’s just £159 for the 16GB model, and as Page 26

likely to appeal. You can’t mention tablets without mentioning Apple, and while Apple also has a cheap tablet we’re talking cheap in Apple terms: the iPad mini starts at £269, which is significantly more than other seven-ish-inch tablets - although it’s a good bit less than a full-sized iPad. Apple claims it’s “every inch an iPad”, and that’s a fair claim: it’s essentially an iPad 2 crammed into a smaller case, so it runs existing iPad apps quite happily. It has more available tablet apps than any other small tablet, it has a slightly bigger screen - it’s 7.9 inches rather than the rivals’ 7 inches, which doesn’t sound much but makes a big difference when you’re using it - and to our eyes it’s much better-looking and better-engineered than any rival. Is the iPad mini worth the extra cash? If you want a premium tablet, you’re using other Apple products or you’ve already amassed a stack of iOS apps then yes. If not, you may well find that a smaller rival will be just as much fun for considerably less cash.

Don’t Suffer In Silence Being able to hear is fundamental to our ability to communicate. If we can’t hear, we can’t respond to others nor speak clearly or judge our pitch – try talking to someone with headphones and they’ll shout back at you. But like most of our senses we take our hearing for-granted and only notice it if it starts failing. Most age related hearing loss is not noticeable until later life, but deterioration begins much earlier. You start to lose some of your range as early as in your twenties. Age related hearing loss is much the same as other types of “wear and tear” on the body. Just as hips and knees wear out so does our hearing. Constant exposure to the noisy world we live in gradually wears away at the “nerves” in our ears, reducing their number and the range of sounds that can be picked up. What can you do to protect yourself? Even if you already have some loss, looking after what’s left is imperative. Be aware of situations and environments that can damage your hearing such as: • Playing loud music through headphones and earphones • Attending loud live music Page 28

concerts - even some classical concerts • Using simple DIY equipment such as hammers and power tools • Day to day activities such as riding a motorcycle (wind noise – not the engine noise as you might think) or even driving in a car with the window down (some truck and taxi drivers have more pronounced hearing loss in their right ear, nearest the open window) • Recreational activities such as shooting So first off, be aware when there may be damaging levels of noise present and if there is, protect your ears. Inexpensive foam earplugs can be purchased from DIY stores and some high street chemists. Most concert venues have free earplugs available, and whilst they rarely offer them to you on arrival, there’s usually a good supply behind the bar. Keep a few pairs in a drawer for use around the house when tackling your latest DIY project too. What if you already have hearing loss? It’s not usually that you can’t hear at all but just that it’s not clear. Often it’s the high frequency sounds that fade

first, such as bleeps and bells. Then it becomes difficult to hear what people are saying when there is background noise such as in crowds or when the television is on. If left undiagnosed or treated, a hearing loss can lead to other problems. Because it’s unclear what has been said, socialising in groups becomes awkward. Sufferers find themselves pretending to laugh at jokes when they didn’t hear the punch-line, or just nodding and smiling and then being embarrassed because the person talking is awaiting an answer. This in turn leads to loss of confidence and feelings of social exclusion. What can be done? It’s really not necessary to – literally – suffer in silence. A simple trip to your GP to arrange a hearing test or to a specialist hearing centre or audiologist will mean your hearing is tested and assessed, usually free of charge. Discrete and almost invisible the latest aids can make such a difference and vastly improve your hearing. You’ll never regain what has gone, but you can make the best of what you have left.

Seed Sowing on the Cheap by Pippa Greenwood It’s the time of year when you can easily produce great plants without breaking the bank. If you want your garden full of colour, interest, perfume and perhaps even tasty crops, there’s no doubt that the least expensive way to do it is to raise your plants from seed. But what can be done to ensure the results in the garden are just as impressive? Start with a little selfrestraint. Whether from catalogues or at the garden centre, it’s all too easy to buy enough flower seed to fill a tennis court when you have an average-sized garden, or enough veg seed for a family twice the size of your own. Make a list of what you actually need and put a limit on how many un-planned purchases you’ll allow yourself. Think about sharing. Each packet of seed often contains tens or even hundreds of seeds, so why not agree to swap a few with friends and relatives. Page 30

This will not only save you money, but will also maximise the range of plants you can grow without increasing your outlay. Don’t be tempted to sow too many seeds at one time. By sowing little and often you’ll maximise flower time of annual flowers and cropping time for vegetables and herbs. It also means that if the conditions are not right for germination on one occasion, all is not lost.

Seeds do best if not sown too closely, and by sowing thinly you’ll also save yourself time and money. Don’t forget that you may not need to buy what you want. Some plants can be reliably raised from seed collected from your own garden and don’t forget to ask friends and neighbours too. Make sure you only collect from healthy plants however and make sure they are ready

and ripe – seed harvested too early will not be fully mature and won’t germinate. Some seeds, especially those labelled as ‘F1’, will produce flowers whose seeds will not ‘come true’ this means that the offspring will not be the same as the original plant and will often be less productive. As well as ensuring the seed is ripe, try to harvest it when the plants and the weather are dry, remove any bits of plant debris that are attached to the seed and allow the seed to dry off naturally. Letting them become too warm or too cold can soon kill off seeds. If you can’t sow the seeds straight away, make sure you store them, well labelled, in a cool, dry place. Old film containers or tightly sealed lunch boxes work well, especially if you pop a sachet or two of silica gel into the containers. Store them in the veg box of your fridge. A small heated or even un-heated propagator can

GLOS DIRECTORIES | HOMES & GARDENS often end up saving you money as you can reliably raise a far wider range of plants from seed. There are many types available now, but make sure you choose one which is sturdily built and has proper ventilation in the clear plastic lid, otherwise seedlings may die on hot days. We stock some of the lovely UK-made Stewart propagators at www.pippagreenwood.com including a simple window sill propagator which, unlike many others, fits perfectly on most window sills without protruding. Seeds do best if not sown too closely, and by sowing thinly you’ll also save yourself time and money. Wider spacing makes for less thinning out but if

you do have to thin out a bit, remember that most seedlings will perform well if looked after properly. Many herbaceous perennials can successfully be divided into several new plants. Indeed most herbaceous plants do better when occasionally divided as the plant does not become so congested and you can dispose of the grotty bits and plant the good sections into fresh soil. Many plants are also easily propagated from cuttings, and over the next few weeks, you could get some great cuttings from summer favourites such as fuchsias for virtually no cost at all. They’ll be flowering later this year too.

Rhubarb crowns benefit from division every five or so years. March and April are generally the best months to do this. My favourite rhubarb, ‘Valentine’ has been grown from lovely crowns in a friend’s father’s garden. Visit www.pippagreenwood. com and sign up for ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ where you can choose from a fantastic selection of vegetables for planting AND receive an email each week telling you all you need to know to ensure great results – from just £29. You can also sign up for Pippa’s newsletter and receive a free ebook on organic gardening, and buy Nemaslug and other garden products.

Wake Up and Smell the (Overpriced) Coffee... Looks delicious... and at £478, what a steal!

Most people have an opinion on downloading music. ‘It’s killing the industry’; ‘it’s terrible for bands’; ‘it devalues the art’. As a musician myself, however, my gut instinct is to swing in the opposite direction. Allow me to explain. A poster has been circulating recently on Facebook on the subject of the price of coffee versus the price of music downloads. ‘Why is it that people are willing to pay £3.50 for a cup of coffee,’ it asks, ‘but won’t pay 99p for a song…?’. I’ve seen this pop up a number of times in my news feed, and I rather think it’s time I stuck my oar in. Apart from anything else, if you buy coffee from Starbucks then you are unquestionably an idiot (I include myself in this sweeping generalisation, so don’t be offended). The markup on high street coffee is obscene. Okay, maybe if you’re buying a caramel macchiato or a vanilla chocciplonko or some other thinly disguised pudding-in-a-cup that it’s time-consuming to recreate at home, maybe then it’s excusable… but common-orgarden filter coffee? Daylight robbery. Anyhow, with that out of the way, let’s get down to the real business at hand. The music industry, and the internet. Page 32

by Chris Russell

The chorus of disapproval on this subject normally focuses on how ‘unfair’ it is that the kind of revenues bands enjoyed in the ‘70s and ‘80s have dwindled so dramatically. Is it fair that consumers happily lavish vast amounts of money on staggeringly evil, taxdodging, impoverished-beangrower-exploiting corporate juggernauts like Starbucks when they refuse to scrape together a few pennies for a piece of art crafted by hard-working, honest-faced musicians that will make your heart swell and remain with you forever…? Is this ‘fair’? Probably not. But is it happening? Definitely. Here’s the rub - you can’t change people’s habits. You have to respond to them. It’s not surprising that the major label bosses condemn technology for affecting record sales, but consider this - do the telecommunications companies who previously made tens of millions a year on international phone calls think Skype is fair? Doubtful. But have you used Skype? Brilliant, isn’t it? The simple truth is that industries move on. Once upon a time you could scrape a living lighting gas streetlamps or setting the pins at bowling alleys. Heck, in the Triassic era you could probably make a

pretty penny selling iguanodon rides to toddlers. But just like the human race, industries evolve, and indeed we only need to go back 150 years to reach a time before it was even possible to record music. So, if you’re in a band and you’re reading this, before you complain that people buying coffee instead of your latest track is unfair, remember that in 2013 you can publish a music video in seconds. You can promote your gigs at the touch of a button. You can record an album without ever leaving your bedroom. And most of it costs you next to nothing. In short, quit whinging and go write a new record. If you work hard enough, it could be on Spotify within the week. Where, as a premium member, I very much look forward to enjoying it. Chris plays piano in South London power-pop band The Lightyears. The Lightyears, voted the UK’s BEST POP/ ROCK ACT at the Indy Awards, have played Wembley Stadium, toured across four continents and released a record with Sting’s producer. Chris has recently completed his first book, “Mockstars”; a selection of video extracts are available to view at www. ProjectLightyears.com.

Creature Comforts

War Horse Michael Morpurgo Based on the true story of a horse named ‘Warrior’, War Horse follows the tale of Joey, a young mount who is sold to the cavalry for service in the First World War and the attempts of his previous owner Albert to bring him home safely. It’s an amazing story of bravery and friendship, set against the bloodiest of backdrops and you can’t help but gallop alongside the intrepid pair. White Fang Jack London Set in Canada during the gold rush at the end of the 1800s, White Fang is the story of a half dog-half wolf hybrid puppy and his attempts to find his place in the world. It’s an epic story of survival, with White Fang struggling against the violent backdrop of the Yukon Territory before he’s adopted by American Indian Grey Beaver and attempts to live as a domesticated canine. White Fang’s new life is just as brutal, as he fails to be accepted by other young dogs and so reverts to being the ‘lone wolf’, detached and isolated in the frozen wastelands.

‘Hang spring –cleaning!’ cries Mole in Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows. The critters are emerging from hibernation, and so are we. We’ve picked a selection of the best novels where animals are calling the shots. What better way to welcome in the warmer weather, than with some tales from the riverbank… and beyond?

Watership Down Richard Adams Fiver can sense impending doom. Something very bad is coming to the rabbit warren and fleeing is the only way to save the clan. He and his brother Hazel embark on the journey of a lifetime to find sanctuary at Watership Down. Crammed full of amazing rabbit folklore, myths, legends and even their own language of ‘Lapine’, we become totally immersed in Fiver and Hazel’s world, carried along on this amazing and perilous journey across southern England. Animal Farm George Orwell Originally subtitled ‘A Fairy Story’, this was Orwell’s allegory for events leading up to the Russian Revolution. Rebellion is in the air at Manor Farm when the drunken layabout of a farmer, Mr Jones, forgets to feed his animals. Pigs Napoleon and Snowball lead the revolt and bring power to all those on four legs. But in time, the uprising takes an unexpected downturn. Remember: ‘All animals are equal. But some animals are more equal than other.

Charlotte’s Web E.B. White Bashful and whimsical Wilbur the Pig is horrified to learn that he’s facing the chop. His human protector, Fern, might not be able to save him all on her own and it looks like it’s up to the barn’s resident arachnid to save his bacon. Can Charlotte convince the farmer that Wilbur really is worth hanging onto? Ok, so the clue is in the title but this is a thoroughly charming tale that will have you laying off the sausages, and letting the cobwebs hang around a bit longer, way after you’ve put the book down. The Art of Racing in the Rain Garth Stein Another dog has his day now and this time it’s Enzo who wants to be reincarnated as a human. Enzo already feels human - he watches television and listens carefully to everything his master tells him. Through watching and listening, Enzo has gleaned that his human family is in trouble and he must do everything in his power to fix them. ‘Heart-warming’ doesn’t come close.
