KEEPING SAFE AT THE BEACH THIS SUMMER Most beachgoers will have an enjoyable and relaxing time when they visit the beach this summer. So when something goes wrong, who can help? RNLI Lifeboat Volunteers can respond within minutes, and often save lives close to the shore. But sometimes, at the beach, seconds count. This is where RNLI Lifeguards play a vital role, they can respond instantly if dangers develop. A good lifeguard's work is preventative; many lives have already been saved by their vigilance. When you’re heading to a beach, we urge you to visit a Lifeguarded Beach. Make sure you and your family have a safe and fun trip to the coast. If lifeguards are on patrol, then you’ll need to know your flags:

A SUMMER OF MEMORIES This month’s editor’s note comes from me, Sarah. I work with Anne at Glos Directories and have done so for several years, so I thought it’s time for me to introduce myself to you, our lovely readers. My goodness, it’s August already! As the schools have broken up for their long summer break, I’m hoping we keep this lovely weather so us parents and kids can make the most of it. How does a nice picnic sound, for example? On page 13 we share with you the top five picnic places to visit in and around the area. You could combine it with some rock hunting (it's a thing check out the Facebook Group "Forest Of Dean Rocks + UK" ), the children are going to love it! When I was a child (a long time ago now!), I used to be sent out in the morning after a hearty breakfast and was told not to come

back until tea time. Oh, the things we got up to! Building dens, climbing trees and swimming in the river to name but a few. Many a time I would come home to my mum looking bedraggled with scratches on my elbows and knees. Those memories will stay with me forever. Whilst children today are often drawn to their Xbox or PS4, it really doesn’t take that much to distract them if there’s something better to do. Take a look at the What’s On section in the back of this magazine for some ideas on what you could do with your family this summer. We’ll see you in September when it’ll be nearly Chri… (no, I’m not going to say it!).

Sarah Dingwall

Congratulations! To Sophia Bell, who is the lucky winner of the family ticket to the Cotswold Farm Park. Have a great time! Thanks for everyone who took part in our competition. Short Story

Stanley’s Toenails By Jackie Brewster “Did you bring the sausages?” Peggy whispered, opening the caravan door. “Course,” Susan said, “are you going to let me in?” Susan was not in the best of moods. Her mum and Stanley were at the seaside for their honeymoon, and this was the third time she’d had to drive over to see them. “What’s up this time?” she sighed. “It sounded pretty urgent.” “It’s him.” Peggy nodded towards Stanley who was hunched over a jigsaw. “He’s got something wrong with his toenails.” “What sort of something?” Susan said. “They’re a funny colour.” Peggy lit the grill. “Are you ready for a sausage cob, Stanley?” “I was born ready,” Stanley said, rubbing his belly. “Let’s have a look at these toenails first, shall we?” Susan said, “Pop your feet up on the couch Stanley.” With much grunting Stanley obliged. At the sight of his toenails, Susan grimaced. Every nail was the colour of creosote. “That is odd,” she agreed. “Have you dropped something on them?”

6

touched one with her fingertip. It was sticky. “Thank you, Stanley,” she said firmly. ”Mother, I’d like a word in private.” “There isn’t anywhere private,” Peggy said. “It’s a static.” “Let’s step outside,” Susan insisted. Peggy tutted and removed her apron. “Are they going to drop off?” Stanley called as Susan shut the door behind them. Once out of earshot, Susan turned to Peggy. “Three times you’ve dragged me out here,” she said. “What’s all this about?” “That first time I’d forgotten my readers,” Peggy said. “And the second time?” Susan said. “When you thought there was a mouse?” “Just because you couldn’t find it didn’t mean there wasn’t one,” Peggy said. “Maybe,” Susan nodded, “but can you tell me why Stanley has got brown sauce on his toenails?” “Sauce?” Peggy feigned surprise.

“I don’t recall. I woke up like this.” He wiggled his toes. “They don’t hurt or nothing.”

“I’m guessing you put it there,” Susan said.

Susan studied the toenails and frowned. She reluctantly gave them a sniff. She

“Is someone keeping an eye on the sausages?” Stanley popped his head out the window.

“Why would I do a thing like that?”

“They’re lovely Susan, from the butcher’s on the parade.” “Just give them a turn, Stan,” Peggy called irritably. “What does he mean – the butcher’s on the parade?” Susan said. “I brought those sausages just like you asked me to, like I’ve done every time.” “Hush,” Peggy whispered, “Stanley doesn’t know.” “Don’t tell me you’ve dragged me all the way out here just to bring sausages?” Susan folded her arms. “Don’t be cross, Susie.” Peggy patted her daughter’s hand. “When we got here I needed a bit of time to myself, so I went for a walk. And when I got back I said I’d been to fetch sausages. I didn’t want to offend him, you see. I just cooked up the sausages I’d brought from home.”

“So?” Susan said. “He liked them so much he keeps asking for more,” Peggy moaned, “and there isn’t even a butcher’s on the parade.” “Mum, you’ve got to own up,” Susan sighed. “He’ll think he’s married a compulsive liar,” Peggy said. Susan laughed. “He’d be right, wouldn’t he?” “I’ll tell him the butcher has sold out,” Peggy offered, “but what about his toenails?” “Have him paddle in the sea,” Susan suggested. “It’ll wash off and he’ll think he’s cured.” “You’re a lifesaver.” Peggy gave her daughter a squeeze. “I’d better get back to Stanley’s sausages.” “You’re welcome Mum,” Susan smiled. “Don’t forget to ask him if he wants brown sauce.”

Back to the Fuchsias

The Garden Lady 01594 541118 or 07767 690009

Catherine will take you on an inspirational journey.

We love August for its long, halcyon days. It is generally a lazy month for gardening, so take time to enjoy your garden and soak up the bright colours and heady scents from roses such as Gertrude Jekyll. The secret to creating a glorious, productive garden is love and attention so keep deadheading and remove seed pods to encourage repeat flowering. By cutting flowers to enjoy in the house, plants such as Dahlias and Sweet Peas will carry on producing flowers right up until the first frost. Your kitchen garden will be growing rapidly so protect your fruits and vegetables from pests with netting and companion planting. Regularly harvest and enjoy your crisp, fresh produce. To keep your plants healthy, keep weeding as they harbour fungal diseases like grey mould. Grow a beard! Bearded irises get congested and under-perform over time so help them rejuvenate by lifting and dividing large clumps and replanting healthy pieces of rhizome (the fleshy bulb at the base) 20cm apart, leaving the top of it just above ground level. Cuttings: Softwood cuttings that you took earlier in the season should be starting to root so pot on now. Soft-stemmed cuttings (short lengths of non-flowering shoots) from plants such as Fuchsias will root successfully in water on a warm windowsill. Remember to choose a hardy variety that will make it through winter. Tip: Hyssop is a superb bee-friendly plant and makes effective and colourful ground cover underneath grapevines and other climbing plants. Catherine's new book "Discover the seeds of greatness" is available for purchase online. Visit www.thegardenlady.me.uk to find out more. - Catherine Williams, The Garden Lady 8

5 reasons to swim your dog at Bilbo’s Hydrotherapy and Pet Spa Your dog can benefit from swimming in a clean, comfortable and safe environment. First and foremost, swimming is a zero-impact form of exercise and the absolute best way for any dog to burn calories and build muscle. 3 minutes swimming are the equivalent to a 5-mile walk; except the dog is cooler and less likely to be stiff afterwards. Older dogs appreciate a swim to loosen up achy old joints. Owners tell us that for days after the swim their dog is ‘bouncier’ and a lot less stiff. Our oldest swim dog, a 19-yearold Labrador, cannot walk but loves the freedom the water and a life jacket give her. A dog is never too old to try something new! A gentle introduction to swimming is ideal for puppies. While most dogs are able to swim, their ability might be altered by panic if they accidentally fall in. At Bilbo’s a hydrotherapist is in the water with the puppy giving reassurance and encouragement… and you too if you choose to! Swimming and or exercising on a water treadmill can help a dog recovering from orthopaedic conditions, spinal conditions and surgery to rebuild strength and muscle. And finally, it's great fun – we all know your dog needs fun just as much as he needs nourishment, love and exercise. Tel. 01594 844222 10

Top 5 Picnic Spots AS VOTED BY VISITORS TO THE DEAN WYE What can be better than good weather and good food coming together for a picnic, whether it is out with the family or as a cosy meal for two? Wye Valley and Forest of Dean Tourism recently conducted a survey of visitors to the region to find their favourite picnic spots. With so many places to choose from, whether with stunning views, by the riverside or in a secluded glade, the Top 5 answers have been quite revealing.

Beechenhurst Lodge Beechenhurst is the perfect rain or shine picnic location, with plenty of outdoor space to enjoy in the sunshine and indoor space just in case it rains. In the heart of the Forest, the centre is close to the Sculpture Trail and has a play area, cafe, shop and an exciting climbing tower.

White Castle/Skenfrith Castle/ St. Briavels Castle Want a magnificent backdrop to enjoy while having a picnic? Then these castles have proved popular with visitors to the Dean Wye. White Castle and Skenfrith Castle are both in Monmouthshire, St Briavels is in Gloucestershire.

Mallard’s Pike Mallards Pike was voted the best place to picnic

in the South West in the Warburtons Picnic Awards 2010. The site consists of man-made lakes and is a popular attraction for walking, cycling and other adventure activities. With seasonal hot and cold refreshments on site Mallards Pike is a great location for a family picnic too.

Cannop Ponds (pictured above) Cannop Ponds is a popular picnic site in the Forest of Dean. It has a large grass area to spread out your picnic blankets and is close to the car park and the ponds. The ponds themselves are picturesque and are home to lots of wildlife including ducks, swards and even dragonflies.

The Kymin A two-storey circular Georgian banqueting house and naval temple, one mile east of Monmouth, in wooded hilltop grounds, which afford spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. When Admiral Lord Nelson visited the site in 1802 he described it as one of the most beautiful places he had ever seen.

A Sting in the Tail Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) is used by thousands of drivers to finance a car purchase, as it offers flexibility and affordability. PCP is a loan but, unlike a traditional loan, you won’t own the car at the term end (unless you choose to). This has the advantage of lower monthly payments. Determined by the dealer, the car will have a Guaranteed Minimum Future Value (GMFV) at the PCP term end. When the time comes, should the car be valued at a figure higher than this, then you will have the difference between the two figures to put down as a deposit on your next car. Sounds good. Low payments and a deposit at the end. But be aware of the PCP terms, otherwise you may get stung.

Adverts not only show the fun and affordability of owning a new car, they also show the smallprint – notably the annual mileage clause. To get the GMFV figure up, and thus the monthly payments down, the dealer wants a low mileage car at term end. A figure of 6,000 annual miles – that’s 120 miles PER WEEK – is common, which is my weekly commute. Any other driving will take you over that annual figure and the excess charge could be 8p/mile. A mid-20s driver I know signed up for a 3-year PCP with such a term. He reached the 18,000 limit in 15 months and the finance company have told him to put away at least £120 per month to cover the excess mileage fee he will incur. PCP is viable way to finance a car but, like any contract, read the small print!. By Iain Betson

Crab Parcels Makes 20

Ready in 40 minutes

These crisp filo pastry parcels with a crab and ginger filling make a tasty seafood starter for a special dinner or can be served as nibbles with refreshing drinks on a hot summer’s evening.

• 1 x 230g can crab meat, drained and flaked • 1 tsp grated fresh root ginger • 2 tbsp freshly chopped coriander • 2 spring onions, finely chopped

Cut the sheets of filo pastry into twenty 15cm squares. Take one square and brush lightly with water then top with a second pastry square. Place a spoonful of the crab mixture in the centre of the square. Brush the edges lightly with water and gather them together to enclose the filling and form a moneybag-shaped parcel.

• 8-10 sheets of filo pastry (see Tip)

Repeat with the rest of the pastry squares and filling to make 10 parcels in total. Half fill a large deep pan with vegetable oil and heat until a small piece of filo pastry dropped in the hot fat sizzles and browns in 20 seconds. Deep fry the parcels, in 2-3 batches, for 2-3 minutes until crisp and golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper.

• Vegetable oil for deep frying

Serve warm with sweet chilli sauce for dipping and garnished with shredded spring onion.

• 1 tbsp lime juice • Freshly-ground black pepper

• 4 tbsp sweet chilli sauce • Shredded spring onion, to garnish 16

Mix the crab meat, ginger, coriander, chopped spring onions and lime juice in a bowl. Season lightly with freshly-ground black pepper.

TIP Filo pastry sheets can vary in size so you may

need a few more if they are small. Keep the squares covered with a clean damp cloth or kitchen paper when filling, to prevent the pastry drying and tearing.

Auction Anecdote Smiths of Newent’s June antiques sale featured a special section for clocks and watches and included a typical array of Rolex and other wrist watches which all sold well since this is a very strong area at present. However, readers may well be very surprised to learn that out of a range of attractive antique longcase and mantel clocks it was actually a rather ugly modern clock which reached the top price of the entire event. Antique longcase clocks are very unpopular at present and sometimes it can be rather depressing trying to find a new home for all but the best examples. By contrast, high quality modern hand-built regulator clocks seem to be very in fashion with clock enthusiasts getting all excited about the technicalities of the mechanism. Regulator clocks can often be quite unusual looking as all attention is given by the maker to the complex system of weights and gears which ensure the clock will have the highest level of accuracy. The example in Smiths’ sale was no exception and it was housed in a very functional rather than a decorative case. It had been made by a retired Admiralty scientist who had been involved in developing the first underwater television to help search for the lost submarine HMS Affray which sank in rather mysterious circumstances with all hands in 1951. He was obviously a bit of a ‘boffin’ and in his later years had taken up the challenge of designing and making his own regulator wall clock. From previous experience, I knew that these strange clocks can be very popular and so was not at all surprised that once the catalogue went online we had plenty of interest with email requests for further information and images. One buyer was very keen and sent several emails expressing his excitement and arranging to do a telephone bid. By auction day we had three telephone lines booked and the clock eventually sold for £4,200 to the delighted conversational collector. I have also had a further email telling me how pleased he is with his purchase – which is rather nice. - Written by Rita Kearsey Manager of Smiths Auction Room at Newent

Home Products Coastal Chic

By Katherine Sorrell

Bring the seaside vibe to your home with a look that is light and bright, fresh and relaxed. Upside-down coastal house interior, designed by Stephanie Dunning of Dunning & Everard: 01722 710 608; dunningandeverard. com, photographed by David Parmiter.

Small seagull tea cosy, £36, Poppy Treffry: 01736 369 247; poppytreffry. co.uk.

Bird tea towel by Fine Little Day, £11.50, And Shine: 07765 530 607; andshine.co.uk. St Ives galvanised exterior up and down light, £33.50, The Farthing: 07789 707579; thefarthing. co.uk.

Natural wood small bird ornament, £11.50, Gisela Graham London: 020 7708 6396; giselagraham. co.uk.

Get the look: SunShine Style • A calm and relaxed vibe is the essence of coastal chic, and colour and texture go a long way towards achieving this. Go all white everywhere, or else think pale paintwork with accents of grey, beige and – of course – blue. Add some touches of natural wood for a lovely contrast. • Bring the outside in by including gorgeous natural elements. Driftwood is perfect, as are shells and coral (ethical, of course). Add some rope, wicker and maybe seagrass, coir or jute for a lovely contrast of textures. • It’s all about the light. Coastal homes are airy and breezy, so maximise light at the windows by hanging filmy curtains or white-painted wooden blinds, and arrange artificial lighting so that a central pendant is supplemented by a versatile selection of wall, table and floor lamps. • Choose fabrics for their crisp or floaty feel. Simplicity is key, so opt for linen, muslin and ticking, either plain or with a stripe. Bold stripes are more nautical, while barely-there stripes are more utilitarian – either way, the look is completely charming.
