Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people
Dear Reader, I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and have been able to take some time out to relax and enjoy the festive season with family and friends. I would like to thank all our readers for supporting the local businesses that have advertised with us in 2017 and would like to wish you all a very Happy New Year on behalf of the entire Glos Directories team. We hope 2018 brings you everything you have wished for. If you have made some New Year’s resolutions, I hope they last longer than mine! Normally by the end of January, they have fallen by the wayside and I’ve forgotten all about them. Our monthly articles are always a great read and there are lots of puzzles for you to enjoy over the last few days of the holidays, so grab a cup of tea and that last slice of Christmas cake and sit back with your January issue of the magazine. Best wishes, Vicky Muller

Cake and Bake Baked Pears with Cinnamon Oat Topping You can use any pear variety for this winter warming fruity pudding. Serve with custard or crème fraîche and a drizzle of warmed honey, if liked.
Ingredients: • 4 medium-sized firm pears • 150ml apple or orange juice • 50g unsalted butter • 75g rolled oats • 50g Demerara sugar • 25g walnut pieces, chopped • 1tsp ground cinnamon, plus extra to sprinkle
Serves 4 Ready in 1 hour
TIP
This recipe will work just as well with crisp eating or cooking apples instead of the pears. Page 6
1.
Preheat the oven to 180C/Fan 160C/gas mark 4. Halve the pears lengthways and scoop out the cores with a teaspoon. Place the pear halves in a shallow ovenproof dish, cut-side up.
2. Pour the apple or orange juice into the dish
and dot the pears with half the butter. Cover loosely with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, melt the rest of the butter in a small pan then remove from the heat, add the oats, sugar, walnuts and cinnamon and stir to combine.
3. Remove the foil and spoon the oat mixture
over the top of the pears. Bake the pears, uncovered, for a further 20-25 minutes until tender with a crisp topping. Serve warm, sprinkled with a little more cinnamon, if liked.

Talented students proved they have the recipe for success as they served up tasty treats at a Tea Party for both parents and grandparents in November.
Lemon drizzle cakes, scones, mini quiches and cheese straws were among the delights cooked up by a dozen Year Ten students and shared with their grandparents, some of whom had never visited the school before and others who represented several generations of Newent Community School students.
Teacher Pippa Palmer who ran the event was delighted with the students, saying: “It was a really positive response from visitors and the students who demonstrated fantastic teamwork and hard work for a brilliant event.” She also expressed her gratitude to parents who came and assisted.
Anne Rogers, grandmother of Emily Mattingley, said: “It was a fantastic spread, there’s so much talent here. I’d never been inside the school before and it was a pleasure to be involved. It was really lovely, I hope we’re invited again.” Emily’s grandfather David Rogers added: “It was superb, a lot of hard work must have gone into it. It was a great insight into what’s going on here”. Emily said: “It’s a really good idea, it includes people who don’t normally get the chance to come to school”.
Newent Community School is recognised by Ofsted as a ‘good’ school, achieving above average results and with relationships between staff and students described as ‘excellent’. The school is also recognised by the Government as a Healthy School, having achieved the Healthy Living and Learning Award. The school recently became the first in the county to achieve the Gloucestershire Healthy Living and Learning Mental Health Champions Award.
Angela Lloyd, grandmother of Thomas Summers, represents three generations of Newent Community School students. She said: “From being greeted at

Fourteen and fifteen-year-old students from Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre showed off their cooking, community and teamwork skills at the event. Guests left delighted and declared that it was ‘just their cup of tea.’
Family braved the weather for a magical visit to Santa Despite the heavy downfall of snow on a cold Sunday in December, Louise Williams and husband Andrew braved the weather and drove their 11-year-old son George from Hereford to Lydney so that he could meet Santa on a steam train at the Dean Forest Railway. "We are so glad that we did," said Louise. "We had a fabulous time meeting Santa on the steam train and the snow made it all ever so magical! Our son was amazed by Santa and I just can't thank the team at Dean Forest Railway enough for a wonderfully memorable experience."
runs through the Forest of Dean, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, giving visitors the opportunity to experience the relaxing pace of a typical country branch line. There are five stations along the route so you can jump off to explore the local area for a woodland walk, visit a country pub or the railway's own licensed station buffet café, or venture down to the Severn estuary to explore Lydney Harbour with its magnificent views across the River Severn. Santa visited the Dean Forest Railway on numerous days throughout December. This is just one of the many events the Dean Forest Railway organises throughout the year. Plans for 2018 include visits by Thomas and Paw Patrol, a diesel engine gala weekend, a steam gala, and much more.

New Year, New Garden January can be an awful month – the miserable weather and short days leave us with little energy, especially after Christmas, and there is certainly not much happening in our gardens at this time of year. Times like these can make us wonder why we bother with the garden but don't be disheartened - nicer months are on their way and I believe that your garden will soon help you feel fulfilled. Gardening eases the stresses of everyday life and helps you relate to nature, whether you enjoy growing plants in pots, utilising your greenhouse or looking out on to a wonderful garden with lots of different shapes and an abundance of colours. January is the perfect time to reflect on the past garden year. You may have even taken notes over the months that you can refer back to. What has worked well? What did you like and dislike? How much time do you have to look after and work in your garden? What are the next garden projects you would like to undertake? These are just some of the things you need to ask yourself when planning your garden for the coming year. While the weather is bad, sit down with a cup of tea, grab that last piece of Christmas cake and browse through some seed catalogues but don't get too carried away! Try and be sensible, especially if funds and growing space are limited, just start with something small such as brassicas, onions, beans and carrots.

Once the weather improves, you will need to get yourself out in the garden again – start the new year with a bit of high energy horticulture, it will get the blood flowing and you will feel much happier and better in yourself. Start by scrubbing the greenhouse before you begin sowing and growing under glass but remember to clean the emptied greenhouse on a dry day. Top Tip: You can lift your garden from the depths of the darkest month with shots of red, green and white with Cornus alba (Dogwood shrubs), Skimmia japonica, Daphne mezereum, Winter jasmine and Eranthis winter aconite. If you need help with or advice on your garden, call me on 01594 541118 or 07767 690009. For more information visit www.thegardenlady.me.uk.

Gardener’s Resolve… by Pippa Greenwood
Happy New Year! Now that 2018 is here, what are your garden resolutions for the year ahead? Here are my suggestions… Re-cYcle pots Save all the pots and trays you get when buying plants and rinse them out to use next time you need one. Store the pots away from sunlight to prevent the plastic disintegrating. coveR it up! Make a resolution to dry off and cover up garden furniture once the summer is over, to protect it from rain, cold, ice or even fungi! Buy furniture covers or, better still, store the furniture in a shed or garage if you have one. Stored properly, it will last much longer. GRow YouR owN Aim to grow more of your own fresh fruit, vegetables and herbs. This could be buying a couple of tomato plants for the first time, or creating a small herb planter, or it could be larger scale and more complex plans if you’re already big on grow-your-own. Don’t forget that there’s a great choice of UK-grown vegetable plants plus my weekly advice and tips emails at www. pippagreenwood.com/growyour-own. Page 10
compost moRe Once you get in the swing of it, composting becomes second nature. Make sure you include kitchen waste such as vegetable peelings, apple cores. The amount of extra compost you’ll generate will be well worthwhile. Many local councils offer a good deal on basic plastic composters. use tHat space! If you have a cold frame, porch, conservatory or greenhouse, put it to use! Any sort of protected growing area has the ability to increase what you can grow and when you can grow it. So raise your own summer flowers in it, force some bulbs in it in the winter or make off-season sowings of salad crops…make it work, but whatever you do, don’t use it as the family rubbish dump! mulcH moRe Make use of any organic matter that is bulky – mulch with it. Whether it is well-rotted manure, garden compost, the used compost from a seasonal bedding display or growing bag, or leaf mould, make it into mulch! Applied a couple of inches or more deep over the soil surface, a mulch like this will improve the soil’s ability to conserve moisture (so saving you both watering time and
water) and may also help to keep weeds at bay. A win-win situation. pause befoRe You buY When you’re looking through the seed, plant and bulb catalogues, browsing online or wandering around a garden centre, pause before you buy. I know I’m not alone in having eyes that are much bigger than my plot! It is very easy to order more seeds than you’ll ever be able to sow and plants that you’ll never be able to squeeze into your garden. seasoNal saveR Make sure you recycle your Christmas tree. Real trees can be recycled at locations up and down the country – many garden centres and councils offer the service. The trees will be shredded and added to other green materials to make a great soil conditioner and planting mix. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com and you’ll find some great gardening things: ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ (where you receive your chosen garden-ready vegetable plants in the spring accompanied by weekly advice and tips from Pippa) plus gardening tools, raised bed kits, Grower Frames, signed books and more!

Space Saving Cloud Storage
COMPUTER PROBLEMS?? Friendly, qualified and reliable. A complete range of computer support from a female technician.
Many modern Macs and PCs come with solid state drives, which are quick but expensive, so computer firms tend to use ones with fairly small capacities. So a PC with a 1TB (1,000 gigabyte) hard disk might be a similar price to one with a solid state drive of 128GB or 256GB. If you’re short of space, options include cheap USBconnected external drives, or online storage. Free services such as Apple’s iCloud or Microsoft’s OneDrive give you 5GB of free storage and even large storage capacities aren’t too pricey: Apple’s iCloud offers 2TB of online storage for £6.99 per month - and like other cloud services, that storage can be shared among all your devices, so you can use it to share things between home and office or between your PC, phone and tablet.

At Bilbo’s Pet Spa, New Year’s resolutions aren’t just for people!
Happy New Year, everyone – we hope you and your pets had a lovely Christmas! It's that time of year again when we make our New Year’s resolutions, however, as many of the promises we make ourselves will eventually fizzle out and as 2018 is the year of the dog, we recommend trying something different this year – why not make resolutions for your dog? The start of a new year can signal a fresh start for dogs needing a change in their routine. For example, with over 50% percent of dogs in the UK classified as overweight, there’s no better time for you to commit to a new diet and exercise regimen for your pet. Make 2018 your pet’s happiest and healthiest year yet. And, hey, maybe accomplishing your dog’s resolutions will inspire you to keep yours this year! What's undoubtedly the most popular resolution among humans can apply to our dog too! If your pooch has put on some extra weight this past year, or perhaps the wet winter weather means you've been slacking on taking your dog on walks, now is the perfect time to get back on track. At Bilbo’s, it’s easy to incorporate your dog into a new exercise routine. Just as many humans resolve to try
“I must say I am thrilled with the coverage of my charity event in your magazines. I already had a response from people wanting tickets. Thank you so very much!”

a new hobby, your pup can do the same. Once you get the green light from your vet, consider swimming, to boost your dog's physical and mental well-being. Swimming with your dog is a great way to bond, it’ll get you both out of the house, and both owner and dog will reap the rewards of a healthy physical activity. What’s more, you’re exercising in the warm together as if you’re at the beach! All sounding too energetic? What about getting your dog a fresh do? What better time than the new year for your dog to reinvent themselves? And how better to do it, than with a new haircut? Treat your canine to a trip to the groomer at Bilbo’s – a fresh haircut might just put a little pluck in their step at the park! Home & Interiors Light Up Your Winter
By Katherine Sorrell
In the darkness of deepest winter, pay attention to your lighting. Could a quick update make it bright where necessary, cosy where wanted and as fashionforward as anyone could desire?
BRIGHTEN UP YOUR LIGHTNING • Using just one central pendant to illuminate a room creates a flat light with dark corners, making the space seem dull and small. If you are renovating, now’s the time to add wall lights, install some additional ceiling lights, or include some track lighting in cornices or bookcases. • To improve a boring lighting scheme quickly and easily, add extra lights at different heights – a table lamp in the corner, a floor lamp in other, maybe a clip light attached to a shelf. The aim is to create layers of light that come from different directions, and that you can adjust to suit your mood or the way you’re using the room. • Think about bulbs – save money by changing to LEDs, which last for years and are very cheap to run. How ‘warm’ or ‘cool’ they are is marked in kelvins - look for around 2,700K for a pleasant indoor light. Dimmer switches give flexibility to your lighting, but they’re not always compatible with LEDs, so check with your electrician. • ‘Smart’ lighting is the way to go – use a remote control or an app on your phone to dim your lights, switch them on and off or even change their colours. Page 18
This smoky glass and brass table lamp would make a great update for a modern or retro-style living room. Boho smoke grey and brass table lamp, £180, Alexander & Pearl. Changing a pendant light can create a fabulous focal point in a room. The eight baubles on this contemporary chandelier cascade pretty, ambient light. Bubble chandelier, £79.99, Dowsing and Reynolds. This wonderfully sleek pendant light features a built-in, dimmable LED panel so you can adjust the light level to suit your mood. Shown here in Petrol, it is also available in Pearl, Forest, Anthracite, Ruby and Saffron. Asteria pendant, £179, Black By Design. Great for a party – or even every day – plug in a colourful, neon lamp and illuminate your space with style. Lumosnap neon lights, £22-£50, Gingersnap.
Smart lighting systems are easy to use and surprisingly affordable. Tradfri dimming kit, from £15, PS 2017 Table Lamp, £25; both Ikea. Illuminate a corner of your living room – and provide a snugly spot for curling up with a good book – by swapping a tired old floor lamp for a good-looking, on-trend new one. Slam Dunk floor lamp in antique brass, £175, Loaf.

Auction Anecdote The good thing about working in a saleroom is there is never a dull moment – well, hardly ever anyway! Of course, there are plenty of stressful moments and there is always far too much work to get through, but once you get used to not eating lunch before 3.00pm and never finishing any task without hundreds of interruptions, it can be a very lively and enjoyable place to work. The year 2017 has been no exception and we have seen a fabulous assortment of interesting and beautiful items pass through our hands and move on to new homes where they will be used or treasured and admired for many years to come. We also get to meet around 100 to 150 vendors every month, many of whom have become longtime friends. A lot of customers use the saleroom regularly for both selling and buying, and keep coming back over the years. Using the services of an auction room can become a bit of a habit for many people – hopefully, you will agree – a good one! Another important part of the auction industry is that we are also helping the environment by recycling items, some of which might have been thrown away if they had not been spied in a house clearance or brought in for valuation. Of course, antique furniture and home furnishings have an amazingly low carbon footprint and can be used for years and years to come because they were built to last. When an antique chest of drawers starts to look a bit tatty you can send it to the restorers and get it repaired and smartened up, this is far better than sending it to landfill, which is what tends to happen to a certain manufacturer’s furniture – mentioning no names of course! Now that I have finished my end of year ‘chit chat’, I suppose I better provide an interesting picture and sale result to back up all my musings. In our last auction, an elderly lady sold a small number of varied items including an old radio which she explained her husband had told her was very valuable and rare. I am not an expert on radios so I promptly looked it up and found that she was right and that it was the first radio made by Marconi in 1929. I gave a cautious estimate of £150/£200 and waited for the internet to work its magic, which it duly did when the item sold online to a buyer in London for £380. The radio now happily takes pride of place in an enthusiast’s collection and I have once again had an enjoyable and fascinating afternoon researching and learning a little bit about something new. Smiths of Newent Auctions would like to wish all their readers a very Happy New Year and would love to welcome you to their auction room one day in 2018. The Forest of Dean Children’s Opportunity Centre Launches New Charity Shop and Community Hub The Forest of Dean Children’s Opportunity Centre, a Coleford-based charity, is thrilled to announce its new charity shop expansion plans along with a new Community Hub, both opening on 2nd January 2018. The current charity shop, The Opportunity Box, based on St John’s Street in Coleford has proven hugely popular since it opened in 2013. The profit generated has meant that the Centre can continue to offer help and support to children and their families in our community who most need it.
here is a taster of what to expect: breastfeeding support, knitting socials, over 60s coffee mornings, talks from community groups and organisations and art and craft activities for all ages. If you or a community group you are involved with would like to visit our Community Hub and talk to people about what you do or even showcase your hobby or skill, then please do get in touch with us and we can book the space for you. The Charity Shop will be holding a launch party on 2nd January from 1.00pm with free refreshments. Please do pop in and look around. The Mayor of Coleford will be officially opening the shop at 1.00pm and then there will be a chance to meet some lovely people from our community. The new shop is based in Coleford, next to Beale’s Garage with free parking.
The time has now come for us to move to larger premises and in doing so we are hoping to create a place where people can not only come to browse the charity shop and grab some bargains but also where they can make new friends, learn new things, get help, support or advice, or simply just get out of the house for a little while.
For further information please contact Liz Martens, Fundraising and Marketing Coordinator at The Forest of Dean Children’s Opportunity Centre on 01594 837552 or liz.martens@childoc.org. uk or Marilyn Smith/Hayley Badman, Joint Managers at The Forest of Dean Childen’s Opportunity Centre on 01594 837552 or manager@ childoc.org.uk
A programme of Community Hub events will be available soon, but
The Forest of Dean Children’s Opportunity Centre aims to promote
full inclusion for all children throughout The Forest of Dean and surrounding areas. We work with children aged from birth to seven years old who have a special educational need or disability. We support them and their families by offering tailored individual support to suit their circumstances. Our work includes offering support groups, workshops, signposting, help with accessing benefits and negotiating other necessary processes, home visiting, play schemes, parent workshops and use of the Centre’s multi-sensory and therapy rooms. We help over 200 families every year and receive no statutory support so rely solely on grants and fundraising. We were first established in 1982 in response to a local need recognised by a Health Visitor who noted that there was no local provision for children with additional needs. We are the only provision of this type in Gloucestershire and each year more and more families are referred to us for support. For further information, please visit our website www.fodopportunitycentre.org.
Santa's first visitors promised to be very very good in 2018 Husband and wife JeanMarie and Junior Brandt from Peterstow were the first in line when they took the whole family along to visit Santa in his Grotto at Labels Shopping, Ross-on-Wye, in December. David and Kayla whispered to Santa what they were hoping to receive for Christmas and promised that they would continue to be very very good in the year ahead. Eldest son Arno said that, although he'd also be very very good he was still making his very very long list and would send it on! Children of all ages came from far and wide to visit the Grotto at Labels in the run-up to Christmas. Proceeds will be going to local charities supported by the
Ross Rotary Club who worked in conjunction with the store. Many more regular events are being planned for the year ahead and will include an Easter Egg Hunt, summer holiday activities and the continuation of the popular monthly craft workshops, to name just a few.
Santa in his Grotto with his able assistant, Happy the Elf.
Keep an eye on the Labels’ website for the latest details – www. labelsshopping.co.uk Labels Shopping is located at Ross Park, just off junction 4 of the M50 near Rosson-Wye and is open 7 days a week. The Brandt family from Peterstow all came along to meet Santa.

Sleep: Vital for Good Mental and Physical Health
We know that losing sleep can make us struggle to concentrate and keep smiling. But research is increasingly proving that a lack of good quality sleep can seriously damage our physical and mental health. More than 20 large-scale studies have proved that the shorter your sleep, the shorter your life. How sleep deprivation affects pHysical HealtH weight gain and obesity The link is probably due to reduced levels of leptin (the hunger-inhibiting ‘you’re full’ hormone) and increased levels of ghrelin (the hungerstimulating hormone) caused by sleep deprivation. It’s a vicious circle, as you’re more prone to sleep problems if you’re overweight. increased diabetes risk Risk is increased in people sleeping less than five hours a night, particularly those lacking deep or ‘slow-wave’ sleep. Their body processes glucose differently, reacting incorrectly to insulin. Tiredness also causes you to secrete more stress hormones (e.g. cortisol), making it harder for insulin to function correctly and leaving excess glucose in your bloodstream. increased cancer risk Professor Matthew Walker, Page 26
author of Why We Sleep, says that after just one night of only four or five hours’ sleep, your natural cancer-attacking cells drop by 70%. US researchers have discovered that night workers produce 80% less of a by-product of DNA tissue repair, indicating their bodies aren’t carrying out their natural overnight cell restoration. increased alzheimer’s risk During deep sleep, amyloid deposits (a cell-killing toxin that accumulates in the brains of Alzheimer’s sufferers) are ‘cleaned’ away. Without sufficient sleep, these plaques build up, especially in deepsleep-generating regions – meaning you sleep even less. It’s a vicious circle. increased risk of heart disease, heart attack and stroke Persistent sleep deprivation causes increased heart rate, blood pressure and inflammation, which can all put extra strain on your heart. Over45s sleeping less than six hours a night are 200% more likely to have a heart attack or stroke. weakened immunity Sleep deprivation damages production and distribution of immune factors. reduced fertility and libido Research has revealed that insufficient sleep can cause lower libido in men and women, and reduce the secretion of reproductive hormones. How sleep deprivation affects mental HealtH increased risk of depression, anxiety, paranoia,
hallucinations and psychotic episodes The poor mental health/poor sleep link is well-established. Daniel Freeman, co-author of major research on the subject, found that insomnia doubles your chances of developing depression, while treating insomnia reduces it. His study also showed that when people sleep better, they’re far less likely to suffer from anxiety, paranoia, hallucinations or psychotic episodes. reduced memory, concentration and reaction times The odd late night isn’t a problem, but after persistently poor sleep, your reaction times, concentration and decisionmaking decline significantly. This can affect not only your health and safety, but that of others you work with, care for – or drive past. Studies show that sleep deficiency harms your driving ability as much as, or more than, being drunk. Four hours’ sleep? You’re 11.5 times more likely to be involved in a crash. Driver fatigue is estimated to be responsible for around 100,000 car accidents and 1,500 deaths each year. a cHange of attitude “No aspect of our biology is left unscathed by sleep deprivation,” says Professor Walker. He believes we have “stigmatised sleep with the label of laziness” because we want to seem busy; a lack of sleep is “a badge of honour.” That’s an attitude we need to change.

Incredible events don’t always make the headlines... …they’re happening daily, right here in your neighbourhood. Every day, staff and volunteers at Sue Ryder are helping patients and families through the most difficult and frightening of times. Along with expert medical care, there is love and laughter, gentle walks in the garden and plenty of tea and understanding…even the occasional wedding. It’s a very special place.
Will you make something incredible happen? The care and support provided by Leckhampton Court Hospice is vital to the people of Gloucestershire. That’s why we’re asking; might you make it part of your legacy by remembering your local hospice in your will?
