Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people
Dear Reader, It’s that time of the year again, with schools out for Summer! Six weeks of wondering what we can do to keep the children happy and entertained… fortunately we have a great What’s On section for you towards the back of this magazine for some ideas of days out and events – and keep an eye on our Facebook and Twitter pages as we’ll be adding more as they come in to us. We are hoping for a sunny day on Sunday 10th July, as Lydbrook holds its Summer Fair with fun for all the family. It’s also time to pack the picnic and dust down those chairs for a lovely afternoon in the sun listening to the brass band music by Gloucester’s Salvation Army performing an open air concert at Newent Lake between 3.30pm and 5.30pm. Coleford’s Music Festival is a must for the diary with non-stop fun and something to entertain all the family. The two-day event is a credit to everyone involved and takes place on the weekend of 16th and 17th. Finally, on a personal note, I would like to congratulate everyone who joined the “Pink Army” last month and took part in Race for Life in Gloucester or Relay for Life in the Forest of Dean where themed fancy dress was the order of the day! Ladies, you did everyone proud. I hope you have a fun, busy but also relaxing July, until next month! Vicky Muller

Ten Tips for Motivational Management - Use the Power of Praise Every recruitment agency in the land will agree that by far the major reason for people leaving an employer is due to not feeling appreciated or valued. Let me remind you of that powerful phrase, “people don’t leave companies, they leave people.” I equally believe, and my experience has shown, that this lack of appreciation is one of the major causes of high absenteeism that some in the private sector, but many more in the public sector, do suffer from. Why are so many managers unable, unwilling or simply forget to say a thank you and show appreciation to their staff? It’s just not good enough to have the pathetic mindset of believing “that is what they are paid to do.” This lack of appreciation is very rarely uncovered or disclosed at the exit interview. Apparently the British psyche does not handle praise well. But praise and recognition are fundamental and vital leadership skills and qualities. So if you want to keep your people, staff and colleagues; help them to be more competent; increase productivity and create a happier working environment; positive constructive input and loyalty; praise and care for your staff. After all, they are your customers, so follow these tips: 1. Praise in public, criticise in private. Let other people hear you giving praise. You will get more of whatever you recognise, reward or praise. 2. Understand the individual. Some people need more praise than others. Some people have great difficulty in receiving praise. 3. Be authentic. The praise must be yours even though it may have been told to you by someone else. It must be owned by you and believed by you. If the praiseworthy event is related to you from another source get your facts right, but again take
ownership of the praise, while giving recognition to others. 4. Deliver praise with sincerity, with eye contact, with pleasure and with happiness. You know body language communicates more powerfully than the spoken word. 5. Be timely. Yes, of course some praise is better late than never but really make the effort to give it as near to the event as is humanly possible. It just depends on where praise lies in your priority of life. 6. The recipient really must deserve the praise and the event must also be praiseworthy. 7. Praise should also be geared to the impact of the actions that were deserved. In other words, you are sharing the ramifications of the success that is forthcoming from the praiseworthy activity. 8. Praise will change behaviour, meaning you will get more of whatever you are praising and recognising, so be careful. If you praise people for working long hours you will get more people working long hours, but this may not be productive and is generally unproductive. 9. Get the balance right. Too much praise is completely ineffective. Can you recall old Mr Grace from the TV programme Are You Being Served saying “You are all doing very well”, every time he met his staff. 10. Be brave. Step outside your comfort zone. Give a little praise and enjoy.

Steam in the Malvern Hills
WELLAND STEAM & COUNTRY RALLY July 29, 30 & 31 2016
If you are looking for the perfect day out for the family this summer, look no further than the Worcestershire village of Welland, which hosts the annual Steam and Country Rally. Welland is situated between Malvern and Uptonupon-Severn with easy access to the M50. The postcode for Sat Navs is WR13 6NG. 2016 sees the 52nd event and the organisers are pulling out all the stops to ensure that the rally will be up to the usual high standard. The event is organised by the Ross-onWye Steam Engine Society, whose members give all their time voluntarily to put on what is now regarded one of the biggest and best events of its type in the country. A mixture of nostalgia, sights, sounds and a terrific atmosphere await you at Welland. The event is special in that you can see steam engines performing the tasks they were built for in the years leading up to the Second World War. Ploughing, threshing, timber sawing, etc. will all be undertaken by preserved steam traction engines. The rally boasts a traditional old time fairground where many of the rides will be powered and lit by magnificent Showman’s road locomotives. There is a large working field where you can see not only steam ploughing but also
vintage tractors at work. Corn is threshed by steam power and steam-powered saws convert tree trunks into planks after being lifted into position by a rail-mounted steam crane. Amongst rural crafts being demonstrated are dry stone walling, blacksmithing, fence making and wood sculpture. First seen three years ago is the Great Welland Railway. This is a length of standard gauge railway with a full sized steam locomotive giving demonstrations – something you won’t see at many shows! Welland boasts magnificent displays of vintage and classic cars, commercial vehicles, motorcycles, historic military vehicles, tractors and stationary oil engines. Each day the exhibits take part in parades in the grand arena. Other events include races between traction engines, children’s tug of war, military vehicle demonstrations, and much more. Music is important, and wherever you go on the ground you will never be far from fairground organs or brass bands and don’t miss the Cancan dancers giving performances during each day. If you have never seen tractor pulling, be prepared to be amazed as specially built machines compete to see who can pull the weighted sledge the farthest.
If you are in the market for a traction engine, vintage tractor or anything in that line, you may find it in the annual vintage auction sale which takes place on the Friday of the rally. All this plus models, radio controlled model trucks, crafts and Farmers’ Market, hundreds of trade stands, trailer rides by steam power, entertainment from the world renowned Van Buren magic show, Emma Puddy’s aerial acrobatics display and an excellent range of refreshments including a bar with real ale, awaits you at this fantastic weekend. With the magnificent backdrop of the Malvern Hills you will have a day out to be remembered for a long, long time. To avoid queues at the gates advance tickets are now available via the website: www.wellandsteamrally.co.uk So come along to Welland on the weekend of July 29th - 31st, you certainly won’t be disappointed! Note: there is free admission for all children under 11 years of age and ATM facilities on site.

Water, Water Everywhere by Pippa Greenwood
With summer well under way, gardens will need more water than the rain is giving them, but how can you minimise the amount you apply, make best use of what you’ve got and still have a good-looking and productive garden? If possible, wait until the autumn to plant out trees, shrubs and climbers – it will be far harder for them to establish properly now and they are more likely to suffer serious setbacks. However, if you can’t avoid planting, improve the soil texture by digging and forking in plenty of garden compost, well-rotted manure or other bulky organic matter so that the soil is better equipped to retain moisture – sandy soil will then hold water more effectively whilst clay soil is less likely to crack. It may be hard work but it will make life a lot easier for the plants, and means you will spend far less time watering later on. It is still well worthwhile mulching beds, borders and your vegetable plot. The mulch needs to be 2” - 3” (5 - 7.5 cm) deep and you can use shredded composted bark, composted chipped bark, cocoa shells or many of the numerous pebbles, shingles and so forth Page 12
which are now available. If the soil is well watered before the mulch goes on, then it will really help to keep moisture in the soil and, as all the materials I’ve suggested will let plenty of rain through, when it does rain the plants will still benefit. Mulching will also help to keep down weeds.
always water in the evening or extremely early in the morning, which drastically reduces the amount of water lost through evaporation, and means that there is far less chance of foliage or flowers getting scorched - as can happen if they are wetted in bright sunlight.
In drier areas of your garden, try to use drought tolerant plants. Those with silvery or grey foliage such as the lavenders, Sedums (ice plants), rock roses (Helianthemum), rosemary and Convolvulus cneorum all tend to thrive in dry conditions, and are also more likely to do quite well if planted now.
Where possible use a watering can or hose with a gentle nozzle attachment and water only the areas where the water is needed. If the soil is very dry before you start to water, then sprinkle the surface gently with a light drizzling of water and return a few minutes later - you will find that the water penetrates down to the roots much more effectively. Excessive watering on a very dry surface is likely to lead to a lot of run off and wastage.
Make the most of any rainfall by fitting a water diverter to the drain pipe which takes water from the guttering from your greenhouse, house, conservatory or garage, and divert the rain straight into one or more water butts. You can also fit a water diverter to the downpipe which takes water from your bath, hand basin or kitchen sink. Normal amounts of shampoo, bubble bath and washing up liquid should pose no threats to plants, and these detergents may help with pest problems such as greenfly. Unless there’s no alternative,
Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for a really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items including Nemaslug to safely control slugs, pop-up crop covers, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, ladybirds to control greenfly, biological controls, pull-out mini tunnels, signed books and lots more besides.

Edible Flowers July is the perfect time to relax and enjoy your garden. The flowers are currently blossoming in the most wonderful colours and you can soon start to enjoy eating your own produce, but have you ever tried eating flowers? Edible flowers have become the trendy chef’s parsley, yet eating flowers is nothing new. The Romans already made use of aromatic lavender centuries ago, and the cocktail drinkers among us have long discovered the beautiful blooms of borage that look great when frozen in ice cubes. Easy to grow flowers such as pansies, roses, marigolds, nasturtiums and lilac are all edible, so why not grow some colourful blooms and add some spark to your recipes? They look particularly effective in green salads. I advise to pick the flowers early in the morning as this is when they are at their best. Wash the blooms carefully and pat them dry with some kitchen paper before adding them to your food. Aside from having fun with edible flowers, there are certain jobs that need doing in the garden this month – keep on top of the weeds, protect ripe fruit, plant out leeks, remove blanket weed from your pond and trim perennials that have already bloomed. If your pond needs topping up with water, then this is a good time to do it. As always, if you need help or advice on your garden, then give me a call on 01594 541118 or 07767 690009. - Catherine Williams, The Garden Lady Page 14

Home-grown talent found in Ross-on-Wye When Charlotte Rice started her new career in retail, she had no idea how quickly her artistic talents would be spotted by her employers and put to good use. Following university, 27-year-old Charlotte from Peterstow worked as a teaching assistant and recently also joined Labels Shopping as a customer service advisor in October last year. “When we asked Charlotte to tidy up a display of clothing we soon spotted that she had hidden artistic talent” said Ailsa MacLeod, Head of Marketing at Labels Shopping. “Not only did she tidy up but she totally re-designed the layout of the display and the associated promotional information about the garments by adding her own hand-drawn illustrations!”
Charlotte Rice puts the finishing touches to a clothing display at Labels Shopping. More local talent put to good use at Labels Shopping.
“The rest, as they say, is history and Charlotte’s illustration skills have been put to use throughout the store as well as in our advertising, social media and website" said Ailsa. Labels Shopping, Ross-on-Wye, is located just off junction 4 of the M50 and is open 7 days a week.

He is part of a family that has always been deeply involved in the Newent community and was particularly involved in the 50th anniversary celebrations at Newent Community School in 2015. Chris happily admits that he is a country lad and has spent much of his working life with the estate agency, however, during this time he developed a liking for travelling. This led him to consider doing something different and more flexible, so he set up a cruise franchise and eventually moved on to work with Travel Counsellors. Chris says "I like the independence that the job offers me and enjoy being part of Travel Counsellors. It is an international company of some 900 home-based independent travel counsellors that has already been going for 22 years. It is just celebrating being named in the Sunday Times HSBC International Track 200 again. It is the fourth time the company has received this accolade. Travel Counsellors has also already received the Queen's Award for Enterprise (2012)". Since launching his business Chris has seen it go from strength to strength and puts his success down to the unique personal service he provides to his customers.

Auction Anecdote Sometimes an item can sell surprisingly well at auction with little or no clue beforehand that the price is going to run away on the day. This was the case at Smiths sale on the 10th June when lot 5, an unusual 18th century Chinese plate with blue and red floral decoration (and a number of chips to the rim), suddenly started rising in price on the internet after a hesitant start. Obviously the secretive buyers had all been hoping to keep its true potential quiet - but in the end it made an exciting start to the day with a final price of £1,400. In total contrast to this the highest priced lot of the day was immediately seized upon by collectors as soon as the catalogue went online. The item in question was a handsome late Victorian mahogany cabinet of twenty-five drawers containing biological microscope slides. It turned out that although the cabinet itself was very desirable, the rare collection of slides held within were the real attraction. The slides were all neatly labelled in pen and contained specimens of animals and plants such as spiders, caterpillars as well as lots of interesting oddities such as ‘Web of a bull frog’ and ‘Bone of a python’. Interest came from the internet as well as via the telephone, and a large number of requests were made for extra images. After condition reports and photographs of all three hundred plus slides had been sent off - it was obvious this was going to be the big item of the day. In the end the auctioneers were not disappointed – a bidder in the room who had left home at 3am in the morning to make the long journey to Newent triumphed against another very determined bidder on the telephone. However the atmosphere in the saleroom was rather tense as the poor buyer looked visibly shaken by the final price he had to pay of £4,500. In the end he seemed very happy with his purchase and after a quick trip to the bank he paid by cash and set off on the journey home with a cheery smile and of course his precious cabinet tucked under his arm. Smiths next sale is on the 15th July and includes a full range of antiques and collectables as well as special sections for coins, notes and postcards. Entries for the 2nd September sale which includes a special section for oriental items are invited on the 9th, 11th, 16th & 18th August. For all enquiries please telephone 01531 821776 or see the website www.smithsnewentauctions.co.uk.

Summer Reads There are few things better than relaxing on a sun lounger in the garden with a good book. If you’re looking for some inspiration for your summer reads, we have plenty to tempt you with this month. Flawed – Cecelia Ahern A book which examines the idea of perfection, Flawed focuses on Celestine, who lives in a world where nothing less than perfection will be tolerated. Infractions come with a high penalty – offenders are branded as ‘flawed’ and become second class citizens, for life. Celestine knows how to play the game, but a moment of compassion towards one of the flawed has dire consequences. Celestine could now be branded herself. Bestselling author Cecelia Ahern has delivered another cracker. This one’s aimed at a young adult market, but definitely has crossover appeal. Best British Short Stories 2016 – edited by Nicholas Royle Now in its sixth year, this annual anthology brings together some of the best fiction from British writers published over the last 12 months. Editor Nicholas Royle has scoured the market, including other anthologies, magazines, newspapers and websites, to find this year’s selection. With a wide range of genres and voices, and a satisfying mix of authors, Best British Short Stories may well introduce you to a new favourite writer. Page 22
The Hanging Club – Tony Parsons There’s a band of vigilantes on the loose in London. With victims including a paedophile and a hate preacher, the killers are seen by many as heroes – delivering justice where the law has failed. But it’s DC Max Wolfe’s job to stop them. This is the third of Parsons’ books to feature DC Max Wolfe, and could well be his best yet. Ideal for fans of Lee Child and Patricia Cornwall, along with anyone else who loves a good crime novel, The Hanging Club will leave you questioning your own moral code. Gripping. My Name is Leon – Kit de Waal When nine year old Leon gets taken away from his mum, he thinks that’s as bad as it can get. But Leon’s little brother, Jake, is young enough to be adopted. Battling with grief for the loss of his brother, Leon finds an unlikely group of friends at his local allotments. However, this is the early eighties, racial tension is high and Leon is determined to find Jake, whatever the cost. This is one of those ‘just one more chapter’ books you’ll keep reading until the sun has gone down and the tears have left tracks down your cheeks.
The Museum of You – Carys Bray Single dad Darren Quinn’s priority is his daughter’s happiness. But what twelve year old Clover wants most is the one thing that causes Darren the most pain – the story of her mother. So Clover has decided that this summer she’ll find her own answers. Rich in description and dialogue, with endearing, believable characters, this is a very enjoyable book to while away those summer evenings. The Sudden Appearance of Hope – Claire North No one remembers Hope Ardern. Not her best friends, her parents, or the people she’s running from. Within a few seconds of encountering her, their memory is wiped clean. It’s as if she doesn’t exist. But they leave their impression on her. Now she’s on a personal mission to destroy a new computer program that’s turning people into ‘perfect’ versions of themselves, wiping their personalities in the process. A great book, which raises some serious questions about how far people will go in their quest for perfection.

Triangle Radio
We are Community Radio serving the Forest of Dean here in Gloucestershire, fully run by volunteers who have a passion for radio and also the community. Thursday 7th July will see the conclusion of what we can only call a very successful training programme. We gained some very good volunteers and made some new friends too! We had lots of fun recording and editing promo’s and creating a short programme. We will talk about these in future editions. Our attention is now focused on the impending Coleford Music Festival. I mentioned last month our initial thoughts and can now confirm that we have the FM licence agreed with OFCOM and will broadcast on 105.8FM for 4 days. On Friday 15th July, I will open the live broadcast with the breakfast show at 7am from our studios in Cinderford. On Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th July we will move to our purpose-built studio at 4 Lords Hill in Coleford and conclude on Monday 18th from Cinderford. Below is the schedule for the 4 days and of course you can still listen on our

Step 3: Then check insurers that comparison sites miss Now you’ve a price benchmark, let’s try to smash it. Big insurers www.Aviva.co.uk and www. DirectLine.com are not included by comparison sites, so check them too.
Comparison sites also tend to miss out special promo deals that insurers offer, so it’s worth checkcoversing your out if there are any of these as r, which well. In a recent poll I did, 78% of customers who haggled with Direct Line said they had success, while 81% did with Admiral and 80% with Hastings Direct. So it’s worth a try. As Pat Olver tweeted me: “@ MartinSlewis Sainsbury’s home insurance renewal £252. Same policy on confused was £186. Rang Sainsbury’s, talked them down to £181.” Step 5: If you’re moving, once you know what you’re getting, check for cashback Once you know your cheapest policy and, crucially, you’ve checked IT’S RIGHT FOR YOU, then see if you can earn cashback using a cashback site such as www.Topcashback.co.uk or www. Quidco.com. These sites pay you if you click through them.
This usually works, but there can be tracking issues, so see this as a likely added bonus and always check ensure you’re getting the right policy. If you’ve got time and your top three policies are all much of a muchness, it can be worth seeing the cashback on offer for all three. And a final word of warning, beware paying monthly, it’s actually just a loan. In effect, the insurer pays upfront then loans you the cash, sometimes at hideous interest (e.g., Endsleigh’s 39.7% APR). If you can’t afford to pay upfront, check the APR. If it’s high, you’re often better on your credit card, or, better still, get a 0% credit card (just ensure you pay it off within the year). What To Consider When Hiring A Dog-Walker If you work full-time or simply need help to exercise your dog occasionally, you’ll need to look for a professional dog-walker. But how do you know that your beloved pet will be in safe hands? Here are a few things to consider: • Will your dog be walked by the same person each time? • Pet business insurance is a legal requirement for professional dog-walkers. • Will the walker need access to your home? If so, you’ll probably want to ask them for references. • They should also know how to administer first aid to the dogs if required. It’s also worth considering that if your dog has only ever experienced walks on its own with you, going out with other dogs could be threatening or

upsetting. Pet business insurance It is imperative that your dog-walker has business liability insurance to cover any damage caused by your dog when they are out, or conversely, anything that happens to your pet. This is actually a legal requirement for any pet business, and should cover damage to property as well as care of the animal. If you are out at work and the dog-walker has access to the house, their insurance should also cover the loss or theft of your keys. It is a good idea to go out with your dog and a potential new walker if possible, if only to give you peace of mind that your pet will be in good hands. http://blog.petplan.co.uk/05/2015/advice/ petplan-checklist/what-questions-should-i-askmy-dog-walker-insurance-credentials-safetyand-more/

Which type of ISA is best for you? open to anyone aged 18 or over. The money is divided between various investment products, including company shares, government and corporate bonds, and unit trusts.
Individual Savings Accounts were first introduced in 1999. They provided exemption from income tax and capital gains tax, and quickly became a popular place to save and invest. Back then, it was a straightforward choice between a Cash ISA or a Stocks and Shares equivalent, but with seven different types of Individual Savings Account now available, making the right choice is much more complicated. So how do you know which ISA is best for you, and even whether you’re eligible to apply? We take a look at the different ISA accounts available, to identify which ones might suit your needs. Instant access cash Isa A straightforward tax-free savings account offered by banks and building societies - interest rates have fallen considerably in recent years, but it’s also a risk-free way to put your money to one side. You get instant access to your savings, and need to be at least 16 years of age to open this account. stocks and shares Isa Stocks and Shares ISAs are Page 32
Although as an investment there’s greater risk with a Stocks and Shares ISA, you can control your exposure to it by splitting your annual allowance between this and a Cash ISA. JunIor Isa Parents can save for their children in a Junior ISA. It’s open to children under the age of 18, but the child can only open an account if they are aged 16 or over. The annual allowance currently stands at £4,080, but a child between the ages of 16 and 18 can also open an adult ISA, which boosts their saving capacity. help to Buy Isa A fairly recent addition to the ISA family, the Help to Buy ISA was introduced in December 2015 in an attempt to boost the first-time buyer market. For every £4 saved, the government has pledged to add a £1 bonus (up to a maximum of £3,000), making it a great way to save for a deposit on a first property. InherItance Isa To avoid having to pay tax on a deceased partner’s ISA savings, the Chancellor introduced the facility to inherit tax-free from December 2014. From the date of a spouse’s death, the surviving partner is granted an Additional Permitted Subscription (APS) for the total
amount in the account, and has three years in which to use it. lIfetIme Isa The Lifetime ISA will be introduced from 2017, and is for people between the ages of 18 and 39. A 25% bonus from the government is available, so for every £4 saved they will put in £1 up to a maximum of £1,000. It can be used towards the purchase of a house up to the value of £450,000, otherwise you need to keep the money in the account until the age of 60 to avoid a penalty. InnovatIve fInance Isa This is seen to be a riskier choice for investors, but one that potentially brings higher returns. One of the risks is that your money won’t be protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme because the banks are not involved. You place your money with peer-to-peer lending platforms, which could attract a higher rate of interest than with Cash or Stocks and Shares ISAs. At the time of writing, however, there are only eight such online lenders offering this type of ISA. http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/ money/saving/article-3505692/ The-seven-different-types-offerchoose-one-you.html http://www.moneywise. co.uk/banking-saving/savingsaccounts-isas/how-to-inherit-isa http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/ money/mortgageshome/article3520497/From-new-LifetimeIsa-shared-ownership-banishtime-buyer-blues.html

Home & Interiors Storage Solutions For Every Room By Katherine Sorrell
Well-designed storage makes an enormous difference to our homes, so interiors expert Katherine Sorrell takes us through some room-by-room ideas. Our homes are full of stuff, and each room requires specific solutions. You could do this yourself, plotting on graph paper where doors, windows, radiators and other furnishings will go, making use of ‘dead’ spaces such as under stairs or sloping ceilings, the alcoves either side of a chimney breast or the space below a bay window. Alternatively, interior designers can create an overall ‘look’, but should understand space planning, while architects are suited to more extensive works that involve extensions or alterations, and can help to make the most of your space. Living Rooms Often the public face of a home, the living room is where you’ll show off treasured possessions whilst concealing less attractive items, so to cope with these twin demands build in storage that includes open shelving and/or display niches as well as Page 36
cupboards. A central chimney breast with alcoves either side is ideal for shelving above and cupboards below, or run a long, low cupboard along one wall – perhaps incorporating a fireplace or TV in the centre – the top of which can serve as seating or display space. If two rooms have been knocked into one there may be space for shelving or cupboards over the central double doors, or in a small room it may be possible to fit shelving above or around the door or the windows. Halls Hallway storage is all about organisation – slimline furniture such as console tables or storage benches works well. For a variety of storage types, supplement coat hooks behind the door with shoe racks at the bottom, an umbrella hook, and a shelf at the top. Alternatively, it may be possible to build an under-stair cupboard, kitted out with hooks, shelves and racks. Bathrooms Custom-made floor and wall cabinets are ideal for storing toiletries and spare towels, keeping surfaces clear, while vanity units with shelves, drawers and cabinets can be built around sanitaryware to cover up pipe work. Alternatively, consider free-standing options such as dressers, cupboards and chests, and wall-mounted
pieces like shelves, racks and mirrored cupboards. Pipe runs can be hidden behind false walls of studwork and plasterboard, within which you can punch shallow shelves and cupboards. Do the same when building a shower wall and create niches in which to store shampoos and soaps. Bedrooms There are four ways to fit out a bedroom: use free-standing pieces that you can take with you when you move (but probably won’t be space efficient); find a carpenter or joiner to make a bespoke room; use a fitted-furniture specialist, whose ranges often feature ingenious storage solutions; or use inexpensive, off-the-shelf elements from DIY shops or storage specialists, and make it up yourself. It’s a question of working out what best suits you, your property and your pocket. Children’s Rooms Raised beds with storage underneath are great for storing clothes or toys. Drawers should be easy to open, but with stops that prevent them from sliding right out. Use large boxes, baskets or cupboards for bigger toys, and smaller containers for things like Lego, toy soldiers and paints. Image - Form playroom storage, featuring Form Konnect 1x1 cubes, £10; Form floating shelves, from £5; and Form photo shelves, £10. All Form at B&Q, tel. 0333 014 3098; www.diy.com.

Health
By Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk
Growing Up, Not Growing Out: Childhood Obesity
Most parents would say their child’s health and life expectancy is vitally important. Yet nearly a third of all children in the UK are overweight or obese, potentially jeopardising their health and shortening their lifespan. Last year Simon Stevens, Chief Executive of NHS England, warned that “[poor diets] and couch potato lifestyles are normalising obesity and as parents, a third of us can’t now spot when our own child is seriously overweight”. National Childhood Obesity Week, running from 4th-10th July, aims to raise awareness of this escalating problem. The Scale and Dangers of Childhood Obesity The 2014 Public Health Survey for England identified 31.2% of 2-15 year olds as overweight or obese. The 2014/15 National Child Measurement identified 19.1% of Year 6 children (aged 10-11) as obese and 14.2% as overweight, while 9.1% of Reception children (aged 45) were already obese, with another 12.8% overweight. ‘Puppy fat’ that children ‘grow out of’ is a potentially dangerous myth. Obese children often grow into obese adults, increasing their risk of developing insulin resistance, premature onset of diabetes and heart disease, cardiovascular disease, Page 40
disability, musculoskeletal disorders (especially osteoarthritis) and some cancers. Dr Sania Nishtar, Co-Chair of the Commission on Ending Childhood Obesity, warns of obesity’s “impact on educational attainment” and “physical, psychological and health consequences”. Tackling the Problem • The National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) provides data to help the government understand and tackle children’s weight issues and aims to engage with families about healthy lifestyles and weight issues. Trained healthcare professionals measure the height and weight of Reception and Year 6 children annually and calculate their Body Mass Index (BMI) centile. • Initiatives such as Change4Life provide straightforward information about healthy family lifestyles. • The Sugar Tax may be controversial, but government research shows that if we halved the sugar in soft drinks, average sugar consumption would decrease significantly, particularly in 10-19 year olds. Dropping the nation’s sugar intake to recommended levels within 10 years would avoid 4,000 early deaths and save the NHS £480 million a year. What Parents Can Do: • Give them the best start. Exclusively breastfeeding babies until 6 months significantly reduces their risk of obesity. • Reduce Their Sitting Time. Prolonged sitting damages
health, even in people who exercise regularly. Keep binge-watching sessions to a minimum and break them up with bursts of activity. • Increase Their Physical Activity. This needn’t be team sports or gym sessions. Walking or cycling to school (even part way), playground trips, countryside walks, gardening, kicking a football around, swimming, indoor snowboarding, playing tag or fitness videogames all provide great exercise. • Ensure They Get Enough Sleep. Lack of sleep can affect appetite-stimulating hormones, as well as negatively affecting memory, concentration, immunity and mental and physical health. • Improve Their Diet > Reduce sugar. Beware hidden sugars in sauces and cereals, cut out sugary drinks, and gradually wean them off adding sugar to cereals or drinks. > Provide Five a Day. Any form of fruit or vegetables will do, but ration juices, as these contain ‘free’ sugars just as sugary drinks do. > Keep Portion Sizes Small for younger children. > Monitor Pocket Money Spending to ensure it isn’t spent on junk food and sweets.
Finally, Set a Good Example. Spending your free time in front of the TV eating unhealthy snacks makes it hard to persuade your child that following suit could damage their health. For more information, visit: http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/ Childhealth6-15 http://www.nhs.uk/change4life

Craig's Comment The height of summer may be the time of year that we are all least inclined to start thinking about winter, however there is one important day in December that needs our attention now! Although some people will have been thinking about a day towards the end of December for a long time already, it's a day at the start that presents a huge opportunity for our local communities and economy. That day is Saturday 3rd of December or, as it has become better known, Small Business Saturday. Each year Small Business Saturday is a day when our focus should be solely on the small, often local, almost always independent, businesses that we find in our communities. They are the businesses that give our towns and villages their character, that provide local jobs, and that keep our money circulating throughout the local economy.
But why should you start thinking about 3rd December now, in mid-July? Although many of us can decide to pop out on the day and buy a loaf of bread in our local bakers, or fill up with petrol at the independent garage, for businesses and local communities it takes a little longer. Each year different areas have come up with their own schemes to make the most of Small Business Saturday. It could be as simple as having free car parking in all car parks on the day to encourage shoppers to stay that little while extra. This is a scheme that has worked in many areas. Another option could be to use the build up to the day itself to profile a variety of local business success stories each day. This has done huge amounts to help introduce residents to the variety of shops and businesses on their doorstep on some parts of the country. Small Businesses are so important to our local economy and health. By supporting local businesses our money
gets recycled into the community instead of going into the accounts of businesses based far away from us. It has also been suggested that supporting local businesses could increase the amount we walk. Although free parking can help encourage us to drive into town, importantly it also encourages us to stay longer and walk around more once we have actually parked. Now is the time to get our thinking caps on. If you do have an idea get in touch with the District Council, Gloucestershire Federation of Small Businesses, or a local business network like Forest Traders, and share it. That way we can make sure that when December 2016 does finally arrive we have the best Small Business Saturday yet!

Ingredients: BROWNIE BASE • 150g dark chocolate, broken into pieces • 225g unsalted butter, diced • 350g light muscovado sugar • 4 medium eggs, beaten • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 225g plain flour
MOUSSE TOPPING • 100g milk chocolate, broken into pieces • 100ml double cream • 1 large egg, separated • Fresh raspberries, chocolate drops and mint sprigs, to decorate
Makes 12 Ready in 1hour 30mins plus cooling and chilling
TIP
Add a few drops of mint extract to the chocolate mousse mixture for an after dinner mint flavour. Page 42
1. Preheat the oven to 180C/fan 160C/Gas 4.
Grease an 18 x 28cm tray bake tin and line the base and sides with baking paper.
2. Place the dark chocolate and butter in a large
heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water and leave until melted. Remove from the heat and stir until smooth. Leave to cool for 10 minutes, then whisk in the sugar, eggs and vanilla extract.
3. Sift over the flour and fold into the chocolate
mixture with a metal spoon. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin and level the surface. Bake for 45-50 minutes or until just firm to the touch - it should still be a little squidgy in the centre. Leave to cool completely in the tin.
4. To make the mousse topping, melt the milk
chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water. Remove from the heat, cool for 5 minutes then stir in the cream until smooth. Cool for a further 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, then beat in the egg yolk.
5. Whisk the egg white in a clean grease-free bowl
until holding stiff peaks, then gently fold into the chocolate mixture. Spread the mousse in an even layer over the top of the cold brownie and chill in the fridge for 3-4 hours (or overnight) until set. Remove from the tin and cut into 12 squares. Serve topped with fresh raspberries, chocolate drops and mint sprigs.

Golden Years
Memories of 50 Years Ago by Ted Bruning the attention and all the gongs. Only after Hurst was knighted did the press, fans, and fellow players get behind a campaign to honour the rest of the team.
The Queen presents the 1966 World Cup to England Captain, Bobby Moore
Absolutely no prizes for guessing which glorious golden anniversary we’re celebrating this month. What, you need a clue? Some people are on the pitch – they think it’s all over – it is now! Yes, of course you knew... 30th July 1966 was undoubtedly the greatest day in our sporting history, when more than 30 million people worldwide saw England beat Germany 4-2 to win the World Cup for the first and only time. So far. The story of the game, and especially of England’s disputed third goal, is too well-known to go into here. But a campaign launched by the Daily Mirror in January this year to mark the anniversary by knighting all the surviving members of the team (except hat-trick hero Geoff Hurst, who is a knight already) stirs the dusty memory of an investiture conducted by the Queen 16 years ago. Somehow, in the immediate aftermath of the game, the Charlton brothers Bobby (OBE 1969, knighthood ‘94) and Jackie (OBE ‘74), goal-scorers Hurst (MBE ’75, knighthood ‘98) and Martin Peters (MBE ‘78), captain Bobby Moore (OBE ‘67), and goalkeeper Gordon Banks (OBE ‘70) captured all Page 46
So it was that on 7th March 2000 the “forgotten five”, as they were nicknamed, turned up at Buck House to receive the MBEs they’d been awarded in the New Year’s honours. Full-backs Roger Hunt and Ray Wilson, midfielders Alan Ball and Nobby Stiles (both of whom, unusually for midfielders of the time, were only 5’ 6”), and striker George Cohen had all made vast contributions, not just to victory in the final but also to the campaign leading up to it, which were at long last being acknowledged and rewarded. But what became of those lesser-known lions after Nobby Stiles’s famous post-match victory dance, dentures in one hand and Jules Rimet trophy in the other? Of the five only the youngest, Alan Ball (21 at the time), went on to enjoy what you might call a stellar playing career; not because he was a better player than the others but because only his career extended into the era when footballers became media celebrities. He scored 187 goals in 833 club games spanning 23 years and represented England in the 1970 and ‘74 World Cups. His top-flight career included 72 caps (six as captain) and lengthy spells at Blackpool, Everton (League Champions 1969-70), Arsenal and Southampton. His 15 years in management were less successful and he retired in
1999, dying in 2007 of a sudden heart attack. Of the others, Hunt was arguably the most successful, scoring 286 goals for Liverpool (one of them, against Arsenal in August 1964, being the first ever shown on Match of the Day), 24 for Bolton, and 18 for England. After retiring from football in 1972 he went into the haulage business. Fellow full back Wilson made over 400 club appearances in 20 years, for Huddersfield, Everton, Oldham and Bradford, before quitting football to become an undertaker. Cohen was a Fulham stalwart for 13 years and earned 30 England caps; he was forced into retirement by injury in 1969 and enjoyed a successful career as a coach at his old club. Stiles’s career followed a similar path: after 11 years at Manchester United he spent two seasons at Middlesbrough and then two at Preston under his old teammate Bobby Charlton. His playing career was also ended by injury and he also returned to his old club as youth coach where he trained, amongst others, Beckham, Giggs, Scholes, Butt, and the Neville brothers.
In honour of the above, this month’s birthday boys are all ex-international footballers.
Happy 50tH BirtHdays to Enrico Annoni (1st), Minas Hantzidis (4th), Gianfranco Zola (5th), Owen Coyle (14th), and Martin Keown (24th).

Bethel Tearoom raises funds for MacMillan nurses The owners of Bethel Tearoom, Colin and Lizzie Gyfford, and their daughter Abigail Gyfford-Scott recently decided to Brave the Shave to raise money for MacMillan nurses.
"We wanted to do this in memory of Colin's lovely mum, Maggie, who had a wonderful MacMillan nurse. But we also did it in memory
of a dear friend, Annie, who lived nearby and had hoped for a MacMillan nurse but never saw one. A Forest based MacMillan nurse has not existed for many years, and we wanted to try and make a difference." As Colin has little hair to begin with, he also offered to dye his beard and eyebrows for a month. The colours were chosen by the customers from a colour chart of around 20 shades; the most popular in the end were flamingo pink and fluorescent green. Many of the customers, both regular and first timers, have been generous in their sponsorship, and a goodly few gathered to watch. All takings from the morning were also donated, and to date we
have raised ÂŁ800+. A huge thank you to all our customers for their generosity. Here's to the next one!

Local Newent artist, Belinda Morgan, paints Ledbury’s favourite street picture Last month, Ledbury Art Society held a small (but beautifully formed) exhibition entitled ‘In and Around Ledbury’ for Ledbury Community Day. It included twelve pictures which ranged from a portrait of the much treasured local Town-crier, Bill the Bell, through Ledbury street scenes to the Malvern Hills, all portrayed in a variety of art mediums. Over two hours an amazing 120 people voted for their ‘favourite picture’. All twelve pictures received at least a flurry of votes each, which shows how many different preferences there were. Many people have asked since “Which was the favourite overall?” So here is the answer: Ledbury Market House, Belinda Morgan Watercolour,15cm x 20cm Page 52
