Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people

Dear Reader, As we wave goodbye to Spring 2016, we welcome British summertime in the hope for plenty of sun, fun days out, and lots of summer fetes and picnics in the park. With the weather warming up it’s the perfect time to start getting out and about and getting some more exercise. I am going to start doing my local Parkrun every weekend, wish me luck! Over the next few weeks, you will start seeing the flags of St. George spring up everywhere to commemorate the start of Euro 2016 and expressing England’s dream of winning a tournament for the first time since 1966. June also gives us the perfect excuse to enjoy some delicious strawberries and cream and the odd Pimms or two while we enjoy the start of the Wimbledon fortnight. (This is also the time of year I take up tennis very seriously)! Have fun in the sun and see you next month! Best wishes, Vicky Muller

Ten Tips for Written Communication – Misery or Joy? Written communication has a long lasting effect because it can be read over and over again. It can reignite joy and bitterness. In my years of consultancy work, I have seen the written word cause more aggression, drama and strikes than any other means of communication. The written word, if there is any ambiguity, will always be read negatively. You must write, not so you are understood, but so you cannot be misunderstood. Although communicating by letter has decreased considerably in recent years, using email which of course also requires people to spell and use grammar correctly, has increased. If you want to have real impact and show that you care, a letter or card can be the most powerful way of winning friends and influencing people. In the business world those who want an appointment with a decision maker should write a letter first and then follow up with a phone call. So here are a few tips to help make your written word more effective: 1. Firstly, attract attention with an attention getting word, phrase or line, for example ‘Here is some good news’. Always try to get something positive either on your subject matter or your first words that will illicit the response ‘I want to hear what you have to say’. 2. Keep it short. More and more people are getting emails on their mobiles so long emails can be hard to read, try and stick to 2 or 3 paras and 2 to 3 sentences per para. This also applies to letters; short letters get read. 3. Don’t criticise or be negative. This is the biggest cause of communication breakdown,

aggression and stress. If this is necessary, speak don’t write. 4. Read before sending. Never send an email or a letter without reading it all through before sending and ask yourself, if you got this how would you feel? 5. Choose the right time. Never send an email or letter in response to anger or frustration caused by one you may have received without first giving yourself time. A great tip, don’t send an email overnight, draft it reread it and then send it the next day. 6. Check spelling and grammar. This is so easy with spellcheck, as otherwise you will lose respect and trust. 7. Use key words. There are certain key words that have great power when we read them, they will also generate pleasure in the reader. “you” “your” and “mine” the reader reads them as “I”, “me” and “my”. 8. Look for the opportunity to send nice messages with positive content, something that shows you care. It’s interesting how Twitter is declining because it’s all about ME! 9. Be careful with attachments. Again so much of our communication is on the mobile and it is more difficult to read attachments this way. 10. Don’t ‘cc’. If there is not an essential need to know, don’t waste other people’s time by copying them.

Home & Interiors Outdoor Living

By Katherine Sorrell

consulting a professional, who will undoubtedly come up with practical solutions and inspirational ideas you would never have thought of.

Longer days mean it’s time to head out to the garden. However large or small your outside space, some careful planning will ensure that it is flexible enough for playing games, entertaining or simply putting your feet up and relaxing, writes Katherine Sorrell Today’s gardens are more like an outdoor room, used for playing, cooking, socialising and resting; they are multifunctional spaces that look good but also work hard for every member of the family. If your garden is in need of an update, the secret is in the planning - how will you use the space and what do you want from it? Sketch a plan of your garden on graph paper, and gather samples of the materials you intend to use – such as slate, willow or terracotta – to ensure that they coordinate. If in doubt, consider Page 8

In a large garden, the ideal layout includes separate areas for dining, relaxing and playing – perhaps with a ‘secret’ children’s area at the far end, including structures such as a swing, trampoline, climbing frame or tepee. A peaceful area away from both the house and the kids is ideal for a hammock or a deck chair – perhaps near some scented flowers or under a tree for shade. And the dining area is best closest to the house, with space nearby for a barbecue or even an outdoor kitchen. Consider changes in levels – they add interest and are easier to deal with than slopes, but avoid lots of steps between the door and the dining table. Flooring is key, too - will you choose stone slabs, gravel, bricks, decking, wood chips or perhaps tiles that complement your kitchen flooring for an inside-outside look? Just like indoors, your choice of garden flooring can signal a change from one area to another. It is also a question of practicality and cost: specify stone slabs for the dining area, for example, and save money with woodchips in the children’s play area. Verticals are just as important, providing privacy, screening and dividing, adding visual

interest and offering places for climbers to grow. Think about fences, hedges, walls, arches, arbours and pergolas – a simple metal archway over a path entwined with fragrant honeysuckle makes a lovely focal point, while a small wooden pergola can link two different areas of the garden and offer a shady spot to sit in. Finally, furniture. Consider waterproof upholstery, outdoor sofas and all-weather rattan, choosing designs and colourways that link with the whole space. You can even accessorise outdoor sofas with scatter cushions and interior throws or blankets for when it gets chilly. If space is restricted, opt for folding furniture and play equipment that can be put away, or build seating into your hard landscaping – an extra-wide low wall makes a great bench seat and you can even build in hinged storage for cushions. The time is right to start planning your stunning summer garden, and creating more useable space outdoors is far more economical than a new basement or roof conversion – in fact, turning outdoor space into an extra outdoor room may add value to your property. Auction Anecdote Some people may be superstitious but Friday 13th May was a very lucky day for Smiths Auction Rooms as they held their most successful antiques and collectables sale so far this year, making a gross total of over £62,000. The sale had a special section for silver and jewellery which featured a very fine line-up of ‘treasures’ including a large three stone diamond ring of good colour and clarity which sold for £4000. We also achieved great results in the furniture section which was unexpected as furniture items don’t usually ‘hit the headlines’ these days. Centre of attention in the furniture section was a late 17th century oyster walnut veneered chest of drawers which attracted a surprising amount of interest considering some very obvious restoration work and repairs. However, oyster veneered walnut is extremely hard to find these days and this chest featured the additional bonus of decorative boxwood stringing to the top which helped to pick out and highlight the decorative veneers. Oyster walnut veneer was made by sawing up cross sections of small branches or roots and then patching them together - which gives a beautifully figured grain but was very timeconsuming and costly. This type of work was really only in fashion in the very last part of the 17th century and since walnut is not the most stable or durable of woods it rarely comes under the hammer these days. Coming with a consignment of other fine furniture the sale attracted a number of high end furniture buyers and by the end of viewing five telephone lines had been booked on this item alone. With the facility of online bidding these days it is unusual to have so many phone lines booked and so it was obvious the chest was destined to make a good price at the end of the day. After the predictable drawn out battle with online and telephone bidding it was surprisingly a bidder in the room who won the day with a final bid of £3,200. He later complained that he had not wanted to pay nearly as much money for his prize - but otherwise seemed very pleased – saying it was going straight off to a top quality restoration workshop before he will put it in his antiques shop in the Cotswolds. Smiths next sale is on the 10th June and has a full selection of antiques and collectables as well as a special section for clocks and watches. Viewing is on the Thursday prior 10am - 7pm and the fully illustrated catalogue is available online at www.smithsnewentauctions.co.uk.

Update on Forest Policing by Inspector Steve Chester For the first four months of this year, crime has fallen in the Forest of Dean by 6.4% compared to 2015’s figures. This is really pleasing as there are 52 fewer victims! Of note, there was a drop in reported thefts of nearly 30%. This is excellent news, although I am keen that all crimes are reported to us. If you are unlucky enough to become the victim of a crime, please report it via the 101 number, which is a flat rate call of 15p, irrespective of how long you are on the phone to us, or by using the Constabulary’s website. To find it, tap in “Gloucestershire Police UK” on the internet and click “Contact Us”, then “Report a crime or incident”. Even if you believe there is little we can do to identify the offender, please tell us about it; there may be a trend in your area, or there may be other scenes nearby where there is evidence we can use to link to your crime. Officers patrol areas based on recent intelligence, so if they are unaware of offences having occurred, they are unlikely to be in those locations to deter further crimes or catch the culprits.

by Police and our partners to the students who had the opportunity to visit stands and be told of real cases of Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE), how to stay safe online, how to recognise controlling and coercive behaviour, the implications of mental health problems and how to report any concerns they may have. There were also very interesting and interactive session with Year 8 pupils about what is healthy in a relationship and what is not.

A similar event was held at Gloucestershire College at Five Acres and a further roadshow will take place at The Dean Academy in Lydney shortly.

The Constabulary’s website has a very useful “What Do I Do If?” section under which you can find out what to do if: you have a road traffic collision; you are worried about a child, be that CSE, physical abuse, or neglect; you have concerns about an elderly neighbour; suspect care home abuse; or believe someone is suffering domestic abuse. There are links to other independent Domestic violence has sadly risen agencies that can help too, such as; in the Forest as it has elsewhere in Gloucestershire Domestic Abuse the County and nationally. If you Support Services (GDASS) 0845 are affected by domestic abuse in 602 9035, National Domestic Abuse any form, or are concerned about Helpline 0808 2000 247, and “Glos someone else who may be a victim, please tell us about it. The Police take Take a Stand”. There is also useful crime prevention advice for your all such reports extremely seriously and every report will be followed up business or home, so I recommend you take a look. with the emphasis of our work being to safeguard people from harm. Each town in the Forest retains their named constables, who are I attended a Domestic Abuse and supported by PCSOs and have Healthy Relationships Roadshow at geographical accountability for the Newent Community School recently, town and the parishes adjacent; where presentations were given Page 12

Lydney (PC Phil Hopkins), Coleford (PC Leanne Sterry), Cinderford (PC Julie Evans) and Newent (PC Rob Mortimer). In addition; Tidenham has PC Nick Assirati, West Dean PC Henry Davies, and the A48 corridor PC Rob Dix. They are there to help their neighbourhoods deal with local problems and spend most of their time on their respective areas. We also have 5 teams of officers based at Coleford which provide 24/7 cover for incident resolution and investigations. Coleford Police Station is currently being refurbished to accommodate all Forest of Dean Police Officers, PCSOs and Special Constables, as the newly re-elected Police and Crime Commissioner, Martin Surl has pledged to maintain a police station in the Forest. We have posts at Newent Library, Belle Vue Centre in Cinderford and at the Community Fire Station in Lydney, where the public can make appointments to speak to their local officers, or drop by at specific times. The Constabulary is currently recruiting and aims to get back to a strength of 1100 officers. About 30 transferees will be joining us shortly from other forces and 70 new constables will be appointed over the coming months. Many of the successful applicants are likely to be people who have shown commitment to serving the public in Gloucestershire already by being Special Constables. We will be looking to replace the Specials who go on to be “regulars” and I am particularly keen to raise the number in the Forest. If you are interested, please look under the “Neighbourhood Policing” section of the website, where there is plenty of useful information. I intend to have an open evening at Coleford Police Station later in the summer to assist with Special Constabulary recruitment. Details will be published on the website. I wish you a pleasant and safe summer in the Forest of Dean.

Tackling Troublesome Weeds by Pippa Greenwood Why is it that weeds always seem to grow faster and more vigorously than pretty well anything you actually choose to plant in your garden? Top of my weed hate list is hairy bittercress (Cardamine hirsuta), which produces a little rosette of leaves topped with a short spike with tiny white flowers, and I despise it because it spreads so quickly. Weeds are typically described as ‘any plant which is growing in the wrong place’ such as your flowerbeds, your vegetable garden, your shrubbery or your lawn. So what makes weeds such a nuisance? • They feed and take up moisture in great quantities and sometimes compete actively with nearby garden plants. • They can create shade and stunt the growth of nearby plants. • Those with a ground-cover like effect can cause the growth of garden plants to be distorted or held back. • Weeds may harbour pests or diseases. So what can you do to try to minimise the problems they cause without spending hours with a hoe or sprayer? • Get on top of weeds early in the year - removing as many as possible before your garden plants start to grow Page 14

• •

strongly makes weeding easier and cuts down on the amount of competition the weeds cause. A hoe is one of the quickest ways to effectively kill off most annual weeds, but it needs to be a good one. Disturb the soil as little as possible when you weed to prevent dormant weed seeds from germinating. Some people avoid anything other than an early weeding and a late weeding, as they find that regular weeding seems to bring more seeds to the surface and encourages germination. Remove your weeds before they set seed. Avoid composting any weeds which are setting seed, have set seed or have particularly pernicious and resilient roots (dock and dandelion are classic examples of these). When removing deep-rooted weeds such as dock and dandelion, always make sure that you take out every fragment of root, as each piece left behind has the potential to form a new plant. The best tool I know for removing dandelion roots is my little red-handled weeder, see www.pippagreenwood. com/products/good-growing for more information. Don’t take a short cut by rotovating ground which is

heavily infested with weeds such as dandelions, docks, nettles or couch grass, as you’ll be chopping up their roots and helping to create more plants! • If you want to sow annuals or vegetable crops directly and minimise later problems with weeds, then try the stale seedbed technique. Prepare the area you intend to sow well in advance of your proposed seed sowing date, which allows dormant weed seeds to germinate; remove the weed seedlings and then sow or plant up as you wish. This should give you fewer problems later on. • Many weeds can be kept at bay if you cover the soil surface with two to three inches (5 – 7.5 cm) of mulch. • Use weedkillers with caution and ensure you choose one appropriate for the problem you have. Weedkillers are designed to kill off plants and they can do a lot of damage if allowed to contaminate your garden. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for a really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items including SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, ladybirds to control greenfly, Nemaslug, biological controls, pop-up crop covers, signed books and lots more besides.

£205 raised in support of Alopecia UK On Friday 20th May 2016, staff at Hale & Co, the Forest of Dean’s leading Builders Merchants, raised £205 at a ‘breakfast morning’ in aid of Alopecia UK. Amy Roberts, event coordinator, said “I would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to staff, colleagues, suppliers and customers who contributed, helping us to raise £205."

Picture Right to left: Staff members Nigel Britter, Simon Evans, Wayne Long, Kerry Stacey, Jean Hook with supporters

"As a small charity, Alopecia UK relies on the goodwill of the general public to fundraise and donate to the charity. It is great that we have raised some much needed funds but also increased the awareness of the condition."

Alopecia UK is a registered charity working to improve the lives of those affected by alopecia. Although not life-threatening, alopecia is life-changing and many with the condition feel isolated and struggle to come to terms with the change in their appearance. Alopecia UK provides information, support and advice to anyone impacted by any type of hair loss.”

Are you frightened of your garden? June could be considered the most glorious gardening month of the year. As spring flowers give way to summer plants, an explosion of colour appears before our eyes, however, not all gardens always look at their best. Is your garden a frightening place to be, with little colour and no plants or flowers? Gardens, front gardens in particular, give others a first impression of your home and say a lot about a home owner. Lots of colour, a good variety of plants and flowers, clean fences and weed free parking spaces make a great impression. A garden should look inviting and full of life, however, it is easy for a garden to look not cared for or untidy. Understanding the plants or flowers you want to grow is the key to a great looking (front) garden. Primroses for example should not be planted in thin dry soil or in full sun but in a damp shady corner instead, the Verbascum plant on the other hand enjoys a dry area in the sun. The key is to make sure you know your garden and where plants would thrive whilst they grow. Why not sit in the garden for a day and make a note every hour of where the sun is shining on your garden. This will give you a good indication of what plants to buy for which areas - plus you get to relax for the day!

SUMMER FETE

Before you go shopping make a list of all the plants and or vegetables you wish to grow as the selection can be huge. Check the label details of the plant and or vegetable you are buying and make sure you buy the correct plant for the right area of your garden. Follow the instructions on the label when planting and before you know it your garden will be full of life and colour, welcoming anyone who visits your home. TIP – for your garden to look at its best hoe the weeds, deadhead the flowers, support plants with canes and ties if required and make sure they are regularly fed with good plant food. If you need help or advice on your garden give me a call on 01594 541118 or 07767 690009. - Catherine Williams, The Garden Lady Page 16

Triangle Radio

We are Community Radio serving the Forest of Dean here in Gloucestershire, fully run by volunteers who have a passion for radio and also the community. Last month I spoke about the training courses that we were due to start. These courses are well underway with thirteen volunteers both new and existing attending Thursday evening meetings for 6 weeks. We recently had two special guests supporting our training, one was Club DJ and Like Radio and Sunshine Radio presenter Ian Davies. Ian came in to speak about his experiences with interview and presenting techniques. Guest number two was Voice of Tesco’s voice over artist and former Severn Sound presenter Andy Turvey who gave a talk on Radio and is delivering a course in Audio Editing using leading commercial software. The objective at the end of the training will be for the newly trained volunteers to be able to create, produce and present a short radio programme live on air during our forthcoming FM Broadcast in July. On that note - we have started planning a broadcast with the organisers of Coleford Music Festival. We will run four days of live content on FM and on our normal internet

stream from purpose built studios in Coleford plus our established studios in Cinderford. Please look out for it as we near July as it will be a busy and exciting time for us all at Triangle Radio. In the previous edition I wrote about Coleford Carnival of Transport. I’d like to publically thank Gareth Boxley and the committee for their kind donation of £300. As a not for profit organisation we look for sponsors and donations in order for us to provide our service. We are seeking advertisers during the FM broadcast and can offer a really good deal to advertise your business across the internet stream for 2 months plus the 4 days on FM, with the potential to reach the mass population of Coleford and the surrounding areas. As per the last couple of editions if you have an event during the summer months that you think we should attend then please do get in touch. If you are looking for a local public address and compare for an event, we can also provide this for a nominal fee. We still rely on the support from businesses across the Dean and if you would like to discuss a sponsorship or advertising package for your company then feel free to contact us either on Facebook or via email at triangle@ triangleradio.co.uk.

Books for Dad Struggling for inspiration this Father’s Day? Forget gift vouchers and gardening tools, books are the way to go. Whether Dad likes escaping into a thriller, getting creative with the kids, or cooking up a storm in the kitchen, there’s sure to be something in our selection to keep him happy. Conspiracy – Iain Gale Bernard Cornwell fans will thank you for introducing them to Iain Gale’s series about a maverick soldier in the Peninsular War. James Keane certainly gets himself in enough scrapes and mishaps to keep the reader entertained. Wellresearched, gritty and colourful, the series brings a period of military history to life. The latest novel, Conspiracy, sees Keane ordered by Wellington to work undercover in Paris – a dangerous task indeed in such a turbulent political landscape. 50 Evening Adventures – Tim, Kerry, Ella and Amy Meek Another great resource for tackling the ‘I’m bored’ mantra, 50 Evening Adventures provides a plethora of ideas for making the most of evenings as a family. There are suggestions for places to go, things to do and meals to cook outside. Former teachers Tim and Kerry Meek are currently travelling around Europe in a caravan with their daughters. They’re used to packing lightly, so most of the suggestions don’t need any special equipment, and can be carried out for free, or very cheaply. Page 20

The Hairy Bikers Blood, Sweat and Tyres: The Autobiography – Dave Myers and Si King If Dad enjoys an autobiography, this is the perfect book to wrap up for him this Father’s Day. The duo didn’t have the easiest childhoods; Si was bullied about his weight, while Dave had to grow up quickly as a carer for his mother. But a love of good food and entertaining brought them together and made them household names. Warm, honest and laughout -loud funny, it’s a great testament to what true friends can do when they put their minds to it. Poor Boy Road – James L. Weaver Fast-paced and gripping from the first page, Poor Boy Road is a good bet for fans of action thrillers. Jake Caldwell is a mob-enforcer who’s looking for a way out. When he’s called back to his childhood town to help care for his dying, abusive father, his boss hands him one last job – kill a local drug dealer. But can he do it? Great characters, believable dialogue and plenty of action combine to make this a real page-turner.

The Den Book – Fiona Danks and Jo Schofield Packed with creative inspiration, The Den Book is full of ideas to encourage Dad to get outside and have fun with the kids (or grandkids). Whether they want a forest hideaway, a fairy tent or a full-on fort, instructions are easy to follow, and many of the dens don’t require any special materials. Published by Frances Lincoln, it costs £12.99, so you should have enough funds left over to invest in some tarpaulin and twine. More Home Comforts – James Martin Aspiring chefs and good honest cooks alike will enjoy this book. As the name implies, it’s packed with ideas for tasty, honest comfort food. Recipes are straightforward, with each step well explained. Most ingredients can be easily picked up at the supermarket, although a few will require a bit more forward planning. More than 100 recipes are included, many of which have been shown in the TV series. Dad will soon be whipping you up Beer Can Piri Piri Chicken, Lamb Belly with BBQ Sauce & Pickled Red Onion, or just some good old chocolate brownies.

Craig's Comment The Police and Crime Commissioner elections may only just have taken place, but another vote is already on the cards. As has been covered by the media, both locally and nationally for what seems like an eternity, the vote on whether to remain or leave the European Union is now upon us. On Thursday 23rd June you will have your say on whether we should stay or go. If you were registered to vote in the most recent election for the Police and Crime Commissioner for Gloucestershire back in May then you should be once again registered to vote in the referendum. If you are unsure, get in touch with Forest of Dean District Council as soon as possible. Across the UK elections come and go and often the turn-out is not extremely high. Journalists and

politicians often try to come up with reasons for this, whether people understood the election, whether they were interested, and sometimes simply the weather and time of the year can be a reason considered. Whatever your opinion and view on whether Britain should remain part of the European Union or leave it, the point that is most important is that your opinion matters and your vote counts. UK and global leaders are having their say on the future of the UK, however, on June 23rd your say is worth just as much as that of any councillor, MP, MEP or journalist. If you are still undecided or if you haven't yet managed to even start thinking about how you might vote, there is still time for you to come to a decision and make sure that your voice is heard. In far too many elections and referendums more people choose not to vote at all than to put a cross in one of the boxes on their ballot

Longhope Open Gardens This is the year of the English Garden and the village of Longhope, in the Forest of Dean will once again be supporting The National Gardens Scheme (NGS) to raise money for charity. Longhope has four gardens open for visitors to explore with refreshments, homemade cakes and plant sales. Each garden has a diverse range of planting styles and offers something for everyone whether you are looking for inspiration for your own garden or just want to enjoy walking and sitting in a beautiful garden. Longhope Gardens will be open to the public in 2016 on the following days: Saturday 4th June from12pm to 5pm and Sunday 5th Page 22

June from 2pm to 6pm. There is ample parking in the village. Admission price is £5 (children under 16 free) which covers entry to all four gardens, just follow the yellow NGS signs around Longhope on the open days.

paper. However, the referendum on June 23rd is too important to the future of our country and to the Forest of Dean for that to happen. If you are still undecided this is the opportunity to not only speak with your MP, MEPs and councillors, but also with your friends, family, and work colleagues. This way hopefully even more people will take an interest than already have to date. The future is too important to be decided by those people that did not have their say. The only way we can make sure this happens is to make sure we take the opportunity and for all of us to have their say. Craig is the District Councillor for Oxenhall and Newent North East. If Craig is your councillor you can contact him on craig.lawton@ fdean.gov.uk. To find out who your District Councillor is you can contact Forest of Dean District Council on 01594 810000.

As a result of the fundraising in 2015 The National Gardens Scheme (founded in 1927) donated a record amount to charity - £2.7m. The charities supported include Macmillan Cancer Support £500k, Marie Curie Cancer Care £500k, Help the Hospices £500k, Carers Trust £375k Queens Nursing Institute £250k and Parkinson’s UK £100k. Golden Years

Memories of 50 Years Ago by Ted Bruning

I’ve just found my cheque book. It wasn’t easy because the last time I used it was in July, when I bought a car, and in fact the last time I used it before then was Christmas 2013 when I ran out of ideas for presents and gave my kids cheques instead. Oh, and in my pocket I have £1.56... What does all this have to do with anything? Well, on 29th June 1966, Barclay’s Bank launched Britain’s first credit card (the Barclaycard, since you ask), and money as I and others of my vintage once knew it has been dying ever since. The credit card and its contemporary, the charge card, were responses to the illusion that cash and money was the same thing. Despite the fact that the Lombards had disproved the idea centuries earlier by providing international credit facilities in which limitless sums could be moved around without anyone so much as sniffing a ducat, people in the post-War age still had to carry cash to cover all their spending. And in post-War America, spending was getting more and more extravagant. One of the luxuries the newlyrich post-War Americans were starting to spend more and more Page 26

lavishly on was dining out; and the first charge card, Diner’s Club, enabled them to do just that. If you didn’t customarily carry enough cash to pay for a blow-out for yourself and all your friends – or for yourself and that one special friend – and provided you had a fat enough salary, all you had to do was pay an annual fee and your card would cover the bill at any participating restaurant. It wasn’t credit, though – the balance had to be cleared in full every month. Diner’s Club launched with 200 members and 27 participating restaurants; by the end of the year it had 20,000 members and other high-value retailers were clamouring to be allowed in. Finders Services, launched in Britain in 1951, was a straightforward copy; it was swallowed up by Diners Club in 1962, and in 1963 American Express, another charge card operation, arrived in the UK too. (Barclaycard also had an American connection: it was a franchisee of the Bank of America’s BankAmericard scheme, later rebranded as Visa). At first, Barclaycard and its rivals were similar in operation: since extended credit was illegal in Britain until 1968 you had to clear your Barclaycard every month, just as with Diners Club and American Express. But it was always intended to be more democratic than the charge cards, which were aimed at the well-off and the prestige trades. It didn’t charge a fee, for a start; there was no salary

qualification but there was a credit limit; and given Barclay’s established position in the UK it was accepted by a much, much greater number and variety of retailers. Without going into too much detail, here’s how plastic has fared in those 50 years. 1969: the cheque card arrives. 1972: the Access credit card is a co-operative of several banks. 1987: the debit card is born. 1995: debit card transactions exceed credit card transactions. 1998: debit card transactions exceed cheque transactions. 2004: plastic overtakes cash. One could go on, but you get the picture. Plastic rules. Which raises a question I’m qualified to ask but not answer? What exactly is money? It’s clearly not the pennies like cartwheels I took to the sweetshop as a child. It’s not a fistful of fivers, either: a fiver isn’t really a fiver at all; it’s just a picture of a fiver. Money as a reflection of itself? It’s no more ephemeral a concept than money as a seemingly endless chain of electronic ones and zeroes. And if money doesn’t really exist, why can’t I have more of it?

Toilet Training A Puppy You’ve chosen your puppy, and now it’s time to bring them home for the first time. It’s an exciting prospect but you’ll need plenty of patience, especially when it comes to toilet training. Here are a few ideas to help you train your pup, and minimise any damage to your home. Choose a specific outdoor toilet area Your dog will soon get used to the idea of going to the toilet outside, but having a specific spot will help to speed up the process. You’ll need to take them to this area every time they need the toilet, without fail, and give them a treat as soon as they’ve been. How do you know when they need to go? After a while you’ll be able to spot the

PETS

signs, but until then it’s a good idea to take them outside first thing in the morning, and when they’ve eaten or had a drink of water, but generally at regular hourly intervals throughout the day at first. When accidents happen Accidents are inevitable at this stage, but it’s important not to tell off your puppy. Just take them to the designated toilet area as soon as possible to keep the message consistent. Rewarding your dog when they do the right thing is far better than reacting negatively when they don’t. You wouldn’t want them to be frightened of you, and by using positive responses you’ll soon be able to form a strong bond with your new pet.

at covers your Q. What if either or both ver, which ncluding of us are self-employed?

Q. What if I’m a nontaxpayer who doesn’t have £1,060 to pass across? It still works, it’s just a bit more complex if the nontaxpayer is earning just under the £10,600 threshold. This is because you have to transfer £1,060 of your allowance to take advantage – nothing more, nothing less. So let’s do another example. Suppose Fred is a basic rate taxpayer married to Wilma who earns £10,000 a year, so she’s only got £600 left of her tax free allowance. She can still move £1,060 to Fred, so he gains £212 on that amount.

fully, if you cheap cover.

That lowers her allowance to £9,540, but she earns £10,000 so she’ll pay basic 20% tax on the £440 – meaning she is £88 worse off. Overall, though they’re still up over £100. If you don’t get the maths, don’t worry, you’re always collectively up by doing this, so if you’re a non-taxpayer, even close to the limit it’s still worth applying. Cake and Bake Cheese, Onion & Pepper Quiche This rich and creamy quiche can be served warm with new potatoes and coleslaw for a filling supper, but is just as tasty served cold as part of a picnic, packed lunch or summer buffet.

Ingredients: • 250g shortcrust pastry • 1 tbsp olive oil • 1 onion, peeled and very finely chopped • 4 large eggs • 200ml crème fraiche • 150ml double cream • Large pinch of grated nutmeg • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 75g mature Cheddar cheese, grated • 25g Gruyere cheese, grated • 1 red pepper, deseeded and sliced

Serves 6 - 8 Ready in 1 hour 40 mins

TIP

You can freeze this quiche for up to 2 months. Allow to cool completely then wrap either the whole quiche or individual slices in foil. Page 36

1. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface

and use to line a 20cm fluted loose based flan tin (it should be at least 4cm deep). Trim off the excess pastry and prick the base all over with a fork. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.

2. Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan/Gas 6.

Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up. Line the chilled pastry case with baking paper and baking beans. Place the flan tin on the baking sheet in the oven and bake blind for 15 minutes. Remove the paper and beans and bake for a further 5-6 minutes until the pastry is crisp and pale golden. Reduce the oven temperature to 190C/170C fan/Gas 5.

3. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a frying pan and fry

the chopped onion for 8-10 minutes until very soft. Drain on kitchen paper. Whisk the eggs in large jug then whisk in the crème fraiche and double cream. Add the nutmeg and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

4. Spread the fried onions in the pastry case and scatter over the Cheddar cheese. Gently pour in the egg mixture and top with the pepper slices. Scatter over the Gruyere cheese. Bake for 25-35 minutes or until the filling is set and golden brown. Serve warm or cold.

Again, even if a drop in the value of the pound does occur, there’s no reason to believe that it would be a long-term problem. data roaming charges The cost of using mobile phones and other devices abroad could increase significantly if we leave the EU. This is because the arrangement to reduce extortionate data roaming fees once charged by UK providers may no longer be valid if we are not part of the European Union. It is thought unlikely that a similar agreement could be reached by an independent UK. voting to Stay At the EU summit in February, David Cameron secured ‘special status’ for the UK in Europe. exemption from the ‘ever closer union’ which would involve greater political integration of member states - one of the original intentions of the EU’s founders. The Prime Minister also attained specific recognition that the euro was not the sole currency within the Union, protecting the existence of sterling now and in the future. Financial regulation by Europe is expected to continue, however, and this is one of the major issues for those wanting to exit. Author and property expert, Kate Faulkner, believes that growth of the property market would continue if we were to stay in Europe, but this would be at a reasonable level rather than a return of the unsustainable price rises that we’ve seen in the past.
