Maggie’s provides free practical, emotional and social support to people with cancer ideas and ethos are very much alive in the 22 centres around the country today.

The idea for the Maggie’s charity came from a lady called Maggie Keswick Jencks in Edingburgh. Maggie was diagnosed with terminal cancer, and whilst she felt that the doctors who looked after her and the treatments she received were fantastic, she also felt that once diagnosed she had nowhere to go where she could have space and time to think, talk and get support. In 1996, the first Maggie’s centre was opened in Edinburgh. Sadly, Maggie (despite being involved in the design and planning of the centre) died shortly before the centre opened but her thoughts,

Maggie’s Cancer Care Centre in Cheltenham is a place people can go to for help and support with any of the problems or challenges that they face after a diagnosis of cancer. Under one roof, they can access cancer information from our Cancer Support Specialists (who have a nursing background), benefits advice and psycho-social support – either individually or within one of the many groups and courses we offer. These groups include a Men's club, fitness sessions, carers support courses, relaxation sessions and complementary therapies. A copy and explanation of our programme can be accessed via our website www.maggiescentres/cheltenham, our Facebook page (Cheltenham Maggies) or by coming to see us at the centre. You don’t have to make an appointment or be referred, just drop in! Everything we offer is free of charge, including the cups of tea and, of course, the cake! Come and meet our small professional team of Cancer Support Specialists, benefits advisors, psychologists and fundraisers. Maggie’s is not just about the person living with cancer but also about looking after those who

Page 6

love and support that person – be that a friend, partner, colleague, parent, child or carer. We know that carers can often feel as frightened and vulnerable as those living with the disease. Someone is diagnosed with cancer every two minutes, and it is estimated that by 2020 half of us will be affected by cancer at some point in our lives. In October, Maggie’s Cheltenham will celebrate its 8th birthday. To date we have welcomed over 60,000 people through our doors, 15,000 last year alone from across Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire. Maggie’s philosophy is ‘don’t lose the joy of living in the fear of dying’. If you know or hear of anyone who is living with or supporting someone with cancer, please do let them know about Maggie’s – everyone with cancer should get the support they deserve! For further information please call the centre on 01242 250611 or email Centre Head Sally Hayes on sally.hayes@maggiescentres.org.

Cake and Bake Banana and Walnut Loaf If you have overripe bananas in the fruit bowl then don’t bin them – just whizz up this delicious moist loaf cake instead. It will keep for up to 5 days wrapped in greaseproof paper or foil and stored in an airtight tin.

Ingredients: • 175g unsalted butter, softened • 175g light soft brown sugar • 225g self-raising flour • 2 tsp ground mixed spice • ½ tsp baking powder • 3 medium eggs • 75g walnut halves, roughly chopped • 2 large ripe bananas, peeled and mashed with 2 tsp lemon juice • Icing sugar, to dust

Makes 10 Slices Ready in 1 hour 45 minutes, plus cooling time Page 8

1.

Preheat the oven to 170C, Fan 150C, Gas 3. Grease and line the base and the two long sides of a 900g loaf tin with baking paper.

2.

Place the butter, sugar, flour, spice, baking powder and eggs in a large bowl and beat with an electric whisk until thoroughly combined - this will take about 4-5 minutes. Fold in the walnuts and mashed bananas.

3.

Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and level the surface. Bake for 1hour - 1 hour 15 minutes until risen and golden and a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean.

4.

Leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes then turn out onto a cooling rack and cool completely. Dust thickly with icing sugar.

TIP Add a creamy soft frosting instead of the dusting of icing sugar, if liked. Simply beat 100g full-fat soft cheese with 100g very soft unsalted butter until smooth, then beat in 100g sifted icing sugar.

Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre Sarah Gwyer – Further Exhibition in London Artwork by former Newent Community School student Sarah Gwyer is in the spotlight once again as she exhibits at a major London event. The previous Welsh Artist of the Year Finalist, whose Amy Winehouse sculpture attracted attention at the Royal Academy last summer, is one of only 96 artists from 4,000 across Europe to have been chosen for the 'Columbia Threadneedle Prize: Figurative Art Today' exhibition. Described by Time Out as a showcase of 'the best figurative and representational artists from across Europe' and carrying a top prize, which at £20,000 is said to be one of the most valuable art awards in the UK, the show attracts strong talent. The 32-year-old who lives in the Cotswolds is displaying a textile sculpture entitled 'No Pressure Then' at the event being held in Mall Galleries in central London. She said: "I'm so pleased to be part of a nationally recognised exhibition that champions figurative art. It is lovely to show that traditional 'women's crafts', like the cross-stitch included in my piece, can find a place amongst some of the most innovational contemporary artists working in Europe today." Sarah added: "I had the best possible start in my art career at Newent. My teachers were fantastic and I was given a wide range of experience, meaning I can now work in multiple mediums." Alan Johnson, Principal of Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre where Sarah studied from Year Seven to A-Level, said: "It's marvellous to see yet another example of a Newent Community School pupil going on to achieve success." Describing her work as contemporary pop, drawing on influences from Andy Warhol to Damien Hirst, Sarah works in textiles, sculpture and print on the themes of celebrity, consumerism and commercialism. She says she aims to

merge the boundaries between art and craft, pushing traditional ways of working to new levels and audiences. She hit the headlines in 2009 for her debut solo exhibition on the theme of modern day icons, featuring images of Princess Diana, Princes William and Harry, Kate Moss and Kate Middleton with halos. Recognised for several years as a rising star of the art world, Sarah was short-listed for the prestigious Welsh Artist of the Year Award in 2007 for her sparkling bead portrait of Charlotte Church. Moving House with Children by Kate Duggan kateduggan.co.uk

The thought of leaving friends and going to a new school, coupled with the anxiety of the unknown, can make moving house very unsettling for children. Kate Duggan recently moved house with ten days’ notice. (She wouldn’t recommend it.) Here are some of her top tips for helping children to cope with a big move. InvolvIng your chIld If possible, take your child to see the new house before the move, and explore the area together. Involve them in small decisions: “Where do you think this should go?” “What colour shall we paint your room?” You could also let your child choose some wall decals for their bedroom and a new duvet cover or rug. That being said, they will want familiar items around them. The day before you move, help them to pack a suitcase with everything they’ll need for the next couple of days, including a favourite teddy, a book, a game and so on. Page 12

don’t stress about declutterIng While you may be desperate to declutter ahead of the move, your child may not cope with the extra pressure of giving up toys and clothes, even those that have been languishing in a cupboard for months. Don’t force them into getting rid of things if they don’t want to. You could suggest packing items that they’re not sure about into a box for the loft, with the agreement that you’ll both open it and sort through everything a few months after the move. MakIng faMIly tIMe When your to-do list is three feet long, it’s really difficult to carve out any quality time to spend with your family, but do try. Leaving the boxes for 20 minutes so you can play a board game can help to avoid a potential meltdown later on. All of you will benefit from getting away from the house for a couple of hours now and then, ideally for some fresh air and time to focus on each other.

talk to your chIld Explain why you’re moving house, whether it’s due to needing to pay less rent or because you’ve found a better area to live in. Talk about how your child is feeling about the move. What are they worried about, and what can you do to alleviate those worries? So, for example, if they’re worried about a new school, could you ask their teacher to help you arrange a playdate before your child starts at the school? If they’re upset about leaving friends, can you arrange meet-ups or Skype calls? Make tIMe for yourself Moving is stressful. And when you’re stressed, it’s very easy to lose your temper with the kids when they’re being particularly whingy or difficult. So try to take some time out to recharge your own batteries. You might find relaxation techniques useful, or just kicking back with a glass of wine and a film now and then may help.

A MESSAGE FROM “FORGET ME NOT” MUSIC IS GREAT FOR ALL!

Music has been known to have a positive effect on those living with dementia as it helps to recall memories and emotions boosting brain activity. Here are 5 reasons why:

1. Music can evoke emotion in even the most advanced of Alzheimer’s patients. Emotion can bring with it memory. It has been proven that by pairing music with everyday activities, a rhythm can be developed that helps to recall the memory of that activity, improving cognitive ability over time. 2. Musical aptitude and music appreciation are two of the last remaining abilities in those living with dementia. Because these two abilities remain long after other abilities have passed, music is an excellent way to reach beyond the disease and reach the person. 3. Towards the latter stages of dementia, the ability to share emotions is often lost. Music can often lead to dancing and dancing can lead to hugs, touching and closeness, and sometimes hidden memories. 4. Singing engages more than just the brain. Listening to music and watching others stimulates more mind power than normal. 5. Music can shift mood, manage stress-induced agitation and stimulate positive interactions because music requires little to no mental processing.

Why not give it a try with Old Time Music and Afternoon Tea at: Sheppard House, Newent Thursday 5thApril 1.45pm till 3.30pm Tickets £4 01531 821227 to book Transport can be provided

Get Your Soil into Shape by Pippa Greenwood

A fundamental garden need is good quality soil; it is key to bigger flowers and heavier crops. And there is still time to shape up your soil before the gardening season really begins in earnest. Frosty weather can be useful, as it can save work with heavy clay soil. If you roughly dig or fork it over, the frost will act on the large lumps of clay and break them down somewhat, making them more manageable. Most soils can become badly compacted if you walk or stand on them when they are very wet, especially if the soil is clay or slightly heavy loam. If you can’t avoid walking on wet soil, use a few boards or planks as walkways to spread the load and reduce damage. Forking a heavy soil rather than digging with a spade will reduce compaction, but either way the soil surface usually ends up pretty lumpy. Re-forking, breaking up the large lumps, followed by a final raking will help you get closer to that ‘fine tilth’ often described in gardening books. Adding bulky organic matter such as leaf mould, well-rotted manure or garden compost helps feed the soil naturally Page 16

and improves its texture, so that it holds the right amount of moisture for as long as possible – and there is still time to fork this in now. Create free organic matter by making a compost heap or bin, and turn autumn leaves into lead mould, a wonderful soil conditioner. Incorporating some horticultural grade grit or gravel will also help to improve the texture and performance of a heavy clay soil. Avoid builders’ gravel or grit – it can damage or kill garden plants. If you have lots of small stones or larger lumps of flint in your soil, remove them before planting your flowers and vegetables. Some stones are good, but even a lightly stony soil can result in forked or deformed root vegetables. Alternatively, invest in raised beds and fill them with stonefree soil. Manure adds both texture and food for your plants. It should be good quality, with few additives, and free from weeds, especially troublesome ones like nettles, docks and couch grass. In recent years, manure contaminated by the weedkiller used to control weeds in pastureland has devastated plants. Try to buy from

someone local who you can trust to tell you what chemicals have been used. Manure must be well-rotted – ideally it should have sat in a heap for about two years. Green manures are a great way to feed and condition your soil, and help suppress weeds and protect the soil from wind erosion. They work especially well on parts of the garden where plants are not grown year round – as when you use a green manure, you sow seed, allow the plants to grow and then incorporate them into the soil to rot down. Sow seeds later this year – there are lots to choose from, including red clover, mustard, field beans, phaecelia and field lupins. Yes, there’s potentially a fair bit of work involved, but you don’t have to do everything suggested and anything you do will make a huge difference! Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com and you’ll find some great gardening things: ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ (where you receive your chosen garden-ready vegetable plants in the spring accompanied by weekly advice and tips from Pippa) plus Nemaslug, biocontrols, gardening tools, raised bed kits, Grower Frames, signed books and more!

A colourful gardening month

The Garden Lady 01594 541118 or 07767 690009

Catherine will take you on an inspirational journey.

We love March for its promise to bring new life and colour to the garden. From delicate white flowers to magical blue Muscari and bright yellow daffodils, the flowers in the garden at this time of year are cheerful and versatile and there is something for everyone to enjoy. March can be an exciting and challenging month for us gardeners. We all know the saying “in like a lion and out like a lamb”, which refers to the fact that it is still very much winter at the beginning of March, while by the end spring has begun. During the month, the weather can be very rough, ranging from icy winds and snow to strong winds, rain and sunshine. With the increase in daylight hours, you will want to spend more time outdoors and start all these jobs you have been thinking about during the winter. As you are out in the garden, you will see plenty of signs of life, which will keep your motivation level high but try to be cautious and avoid planting or sowing too early.

My purpose in life is to create landscape magic, to share that passion for beautiful gardens with as many people as possible, to have fun and to achieve success. The business involves garden care & conservancy for clients in many different situations - from busy professionals to elderly people. I am a sole trader, and have been working for myself for 24 years. I cover the Forest of Dean area, Gloucestershire, Monmouth & Ross-on-Wye. I am also a professional speaker who talks to small groups and clubs.

Small or large areas • Practical garden ideas & help • Design consultation • Planning advice • Planting & plant care • Pruning and maintenance The right garden has a beneficial effect, is an oasis of calm and a home in the natural world to make you feel good.

Most of us have busy lives with limited time for gardening or are new to gardening, so here are some questions you should keep in mind when planning your gardening tasks for the year: • Soil: What type of soil do you have? Do you need to prepare the soil for planting in the coming weeks? Will the soil need improving or just forking over? • Planting: Do you need to add new plants to the garden? What planting needs to be done now? When is a good time to plant trees and shrubs? Tip: Start sowing seeds of flowers and vegetables under cover. • Lawns: Does your lawn need any attention other than mowing? Tip: Now is a good time to make a new lawn. • Under cover: What jobs do you need to do in the greenhouse? When do you need to start sowing seeds? • Pests and diseases: What are the signs, and how do I stop any pest or disease? • Wildlife: How can you protect wildlife in the garden? If you need help with or advice on your garden, call me on 01594 541118 or 07767 690009. For more information visit www.thegardenlady.me.uk.

Forest Fact and Fable Book Launch WATER, WATER, BADGER, BOAR Forest Fact and Fable, the latest book by the Forest of Dean Writers, was launched at Chepstow Bookshop on Thursday 22nd February to a full house. The stories, poems and non-fiction brought to life in this volume are based on the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley, home to all of the authors it features. They were written as a tribute to the late Claire Hamilton, founder of the Forest of Dean Writers and creative director of On the Edge Publishing, who died in February 2017. The twenty authors featured in the book include guest authors Herbert Girardet, John Clarke, Alan Butt and Celia Harper as well as Claire’s partner Steve Eddy and sister Rosie

Whaley. One of Claire’s own poems ‘Green Man’ is also featured. The short readings elicited a mixture of reflection, appreciation and laughter in equal measure. Priced at £9.99, 'Forest Fact and Fable' is the latest in the Forest series from On the Edge Publishing after 'Sex and the Forest', 'If You Go Down to the Woods' and 'Forest Fact and Fiction'. - Val Ormrod

Gloucester author becomes a bestseller Gloucester author Rachel Sargeant’s latest novel, The Perfect Neighbours, published in December 2017, has reached the top ten in the Kindle bestseller charts, and number one in the British and Irish Kindle crime chart. The novel explores the tensions that arise when a newcomer peers below the polite veneer of an apparently close-knit, expat community and finds something toxic buried beneath. When Helen Taylor moves to Germany with her loving husband Gary, she can’t wait to join the community of British teachers from the local International School. But her new start is about to become her worst nightmare and Helen quickly discovers that the perfect neighbours tell the perfect lies. As soon as the charming family across the way welcomes Helen into their home, she begins to suspect that all is not as it seems. Her unease turns to panic when Gary starts to behave strangely and a child goes missing, vanished without a trace. It’s not long before violence and tragedy strike.

With cracks appearing in the cosy neighbourhood, Helen realises her perfect neighbours are capable of almost anything. The book is available from Amazon and the HarperCollins website.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Rachel Sargeant grew up in Lincolnshire. The Perfect Neighbours is her third novel. She is a previous winner of Writing Magazine’s Crime Short Story competition and has been placed or shortlisted in various competitions, including the Bristol Short Story Prize. Her stories have appeared in My Weekly and the Accent Press Saucy Shorts series. Rachel has a degree in German and Librarianship from Aberystwyth University and a Masters in Creative Writing from Lancaster University. Home & Interiors Spring Clean with Style

By Katherine Sorrell

Sweep, brush, wash and scrub. When spring sunlight shows up the corners of your home that need attention, it’s time to pop on your pinny and get to work. And cleaning is so much more enjoyable when the tools you use are both efficient and good-looking.

Tips for efficienT cleaning • For a proper fresh start, begin by tidying all the mess that has built up over the last year. Sort it out into piles of rubbish, things to give away, stuff that needs mending and everything else that needs to find a rightful home. Ta da! You have created much more space in your home and plenty of room to get cleaning. • Be prepared. Work out what jobs you are going to tackle, wear appropriate clothing and gather together all the necessary tools and products. A spacious caddy will come in very handy. • Divide tasks into five key areas: vacuuming, dusting, mopping/ scrubbing, washing and wiping, and polishing. Don’t forget specific jobs such as turning mattresses, spot-cleaning upholstery, cleaning the oven, defrosting the fridge, descaling the shower head and beating rugs. You may also get super-organised and add in those less frequent tasks such as steam-cleaning the carpets or having the chimney swept. • Your basic principles of cleaning should be to work from top to bottom and tackle dry chores before wet ones. Decide whether to do one room at a time or one task at a time throughout the whole house. Put some music on and enjoy the process – your home will be gleaming before you know it. Page 22

Beauty Gorgeous Gifts and Tempting Treats

by Kate Duggan www.kateduggan.co.uk

Whether you’re looking for the perfect Mother’s Day gift, or just fancy treating yourself, we have plenty of goodies to tempt you this month. Jo Malone has released a collection of five limited-edition fragrances, called English Fields. Unusually, several of the scents are based around cereals and grains, such as wheat, barley and oats, giving them a warm, fresh aroma. Choose from Poppy & Barley, Primrose & Rye, Oat & Cornflower, Honey & Crocus or Green Wheat & Meadowsweet. Each 30ml cologne is priced at £47 and is available from www.jomalone.co.uk. The NHS’s My Trusty skincare range is now available to buy from supermarkets and pharmacists. The range is based around skinloving sunflower oil. Clinical scientist Dr Mark Brewin says, “Although originally developed to treat patients with burns and scars, My Trusty is gentle enough for the whole family to use every day. Our users have reported significant benefits on problematic skin conditions.” There are body lotions, hand creams, body butters and a face oil. Each one is lightly scented with essential oils, such as bergamot and neroli, and fragrance-free versions are also available. The best part is that prices start at just £4, and every product that’s bought helps to fund the NHS, see www. mytrustyskincare.co.uk. Page 26

Natural skincare brand Odylique has ventured into makeup for the first time. Every product is packed with organic and fairlytraded natural ingredients and is palm oil-free. If you’re just venturing into natural cosmetics, lipstick is a great place to start. Odylique’s Organic Mineral Lipsticks (£18) are made with nourishing ingredients, such as jojoba oil and shea butter. Created without synthetic silicones they have a matte finish and may feel different to your usual brand, but the colours are great, and they really do soften and protect lips. Available from www.odylique.co.uk. Time Bomb’s Peace & Quiet Coconut Cleansing Oil is a real multi-tasker. It works hard to remove makeup and excess oil, but is really gentle and very nourishing. Coconut oil has antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. The cleanser also includes other skinloving, natural ingredients, such as grape seed, sunflower and safflower oils. The result is smoother, softer, clean skin. On its own, the cleansing oil costs £25 from www. timebombco.com, but do check for giftset offers on QVC. At the time of writing, the oil was being offered with the Flashback Nightly Treatment and H2Omega Complexion Cocktail for £54, which is a saving of more than £20 in comparison to buying the products separately. Looking for the perfect gift for Mother’s Day? Green People’s Divine Treat gift box is sure to earn you some brownie points. Featuring the Orange Blossom Cleanser, Exfoliator and Moisturiser, it’s perfect for combination and oily skin. The trio works together to balance skin, unblock pores, hydrate, remove impurities and soften skin. It’s also a real treat for the senses, as each product is scented with orange blossom, spicy black pepper and warming cypress. As with all Green People products, they’re organic and free from SLS, parabens, alcohol, lanolin and artificial fragrances. £50, from www. greenpeople. co.uk.

Bilbo’s Pet Spa: Water Therapy for Ailing Pooches

Nessie having water treadmill therapy for an injured right hind limb

Hanging out by the pool is no longer an activity just for humans. Disabled and arthritic dogs can now benefit from a wet workout with the warmth and weightlessness that water affords. Just like humans, low-impact hydrotherapy is essential for rehabilitation from injury and helps treat mobility-related conditions in dogs. Exercising in the non-weight-bearing environment of the pool or the controlled low-weight-bearing environment of the underwater treadmill allows an animal to relieve pressure on sensitive joints and injured tissues. This method of exercise reduces pain and encourages an increased range of movement, 360° resistance training and excellent cardiovascular conditioning. Hydrotherapy at Bilbo’s Pet Spa is used both for fun and fitness as well as for specialised rehabilitation treatments. Every single dog can benefit from waterbased exercise. Unlike the high-impact repetitive action of running or walking, Bilbo’s offers a wide variety of safe, fun, and challenging mental and physical fitness options for dogs of all ages and athletic abilities. If you have an elderly dog, then the non-impact option of the swimming pool or low-impact underwater treadmill and other fitness equipment can be painless options to keep fit and have fun. Overweight dogs can also benefit immensely

“I must say I am thrilled with the coverage of my charity event in your magazines. I already had a response from people wanting tickets. Thank you so very much!”

'Dry January' donations help support local cat rescue centre

Karen Campbell

Henry when we collected him

Social Media is often portrayed negatively but a charity in Gloucestershire is very grateful for Facebook and the help of a member who, through 'Dry January', has donated over £800 to their cause. Charlie Kawczynski lives in Gloucester and is a volunteer for New Start Cat Rescue. She has already adopted two rescue cats and is very vocal about this on social media. Karen Campbell lives in Denham, Buckinghamshire, and has a cat called Tito. Both ladies have never met in real life but they are both fans of the best-selling author Stephen Leather and became online friends about 4 years ago. They often chat online and Karen admires the work New Start does and has previously supported New Start. This January, Karen’s daughter decided to do 'Dry January' and bet her mum that she couldn’t do it! Karen

Henry a few days Charlie with her foster later after surgery kittens last year accepted the challenge and kindly did so on behalf of New Start. Karen said that she had gotten into the habit of coming home from work and having a glass or two of wine a night so this would be difficult but she did it and raised a grand total of £823.50 with Gift Aid. When Karen was asked why she contributed to New Start, she replied “I chose New Start as I wanted to support a charity that any money raised for would make a significant difference to. I honestly didn’t anticipate making this amount of money so thank you to friends and family and everyone who donated!” New Start Cat Rescue is a small independent charity in Gloucester which homes over 745 cats per year. It relies solely on donations and is different to most charities as it has no paid employees and is run entirely by volunteers. Charlie has helped out there for over a year doing the newsletter and fostering cats. She even asked

Stephen Leather to be one of their patrons as he is a cat lover himself. "For a small charity this money means so very much," said Charlie. "We have had a really busy winter where we have rescued over 80 cats on a local farm and last week we have had a cat handed to us which is ever so poorly. Henry's fur was completely matted and has had to be shaved. He has cat flu and has had to have some of his teeth removed plus the usual neutering, defleaing and deworming." This money will really help towards Henry and others cats and kittens we care for. Charlie and Karen plan to meet in real life in the next few months and Charlie said she will buy Karen a very large glass of wine! More information about New Start can be found via Facebook www.facebook.com/ newstartcatrescue or via their webpage: www.newstartcat rescue.org.uk If you would like to add to Karen's 'Dry January' go to: https://mydonate.bt.com/ fundraisers/charliekaren The link to our My Donate BT page for much needed and appreciated donations is: https://mydonate. bt.com/charities/newstartcatrescue The PayPal account for any donations is: jb@newstartcatrescue.org.uk For any more information, please contact Charlie on 07968 758899.

Local charities to benefit from Santa's visit! Santa in his grotto at Labels Shopping on the outskirts of Rosson-Wye during the run-up to Christmas.

Dressed accordingly, members of the Ross-on-Wye Rotary Club dropped in to collect their cheque from Chrissie Ellis who designed and built Santa’s Grotto at Labels Shopping. Local Ross-on-Wye charities will benefit from the funds raised when children of all ages flocked to visit Page 32

“I really enjoyed my few days at Labels, it was lovely to meet you all!” said Santa. “I’m sorry that I couldn’t have stayed for longer but it’s a very busy time of year for me and I had a lot of presents to deliver... I do hope that you received what you asked me for.” Santa was ably assisted by elves from the Rotary

Club of Ross-onWye and the Grotto itself was designed and built by Chrissie Ellis, a Labels colleague. Over £850 was raised and the proceeds are going to local charities supported by the Rotary Club of Rosson-Wye who worked in conjunction with the Labels on the fundraising project. Labels Shopping is located at Ross Park, just off junction 4 of the M50 near Ross-on-Wye. Open 7 days a week with lots of free parking.

Auction Anecdote This month’s anecdote concentrates on an interesting silver designer and raises questions about new technology and online bidding. The lot in question was a rare set of six silver coffee spoons designed by leading British silversmith Omar Ramsden; three of the spoons had rose terminals and three thistle terminals. Omar Ramsden worked from the end of the 19th century until his death in 1939. He was born in Sheffield and studied as a silver apprentice until he met his business partner Alwyn Carr at college. They set up their own business in London and managed to cash in on the Arts & Crafts fashion for handmade silver, working in an unusual quasi-Art Nouveau style. They had studied ‘History of Art’ at the Royal College of Art and many of their designs were historically led, including Gothic, Tudor, Renaissance and Celtic influences. This made them ideal for the many ecclesiastical and municipal commissions they were given while being in tune with the trends of the day. In 1919 Alwyn Carr left the business and Omar worked on, employing up to twenty staff, although he rarely made anything himself. Apparently, he was an expert at marketing and self-promotion – this is perhaps illustrated by his quirky signature ‘Omar Ramsden Me Fecit’ which translates to ‘Omar Ramsden Made Me’. The set of spoons sold at Smiths were consigned by a client from Malvern and, based on a spot of quick research on the internet, were given an estimate of £500/£700. Interest was bound to be generated online by Ramsden collectors and since the online bidding website now allows pre-sale bidding in an eBay-style format, it was possible to see the winning bid in the online catalogue for several days before the auction. In fact, it was the vendor, who had gone online to look at his lots, who rang me up excitedly when he noticed the spoons had a ‘highest bid’ value of £1,150. Displaying online bids like this is meant to encourage further bidding but many auctioneers, including myself, are not terribly keen on the idea as it seems to break traditional auction confidentiality values and spoils the excitement of watching the bidding during the auction itself. On the auction day, I had to start the bidding at £1,150 - this being the next successful bid over the underbid. Of course, with such a strong starting price no further bidding was encountered, which meant we had achieved an excellent sale result but sadly with very little build-up or atmosphere – such is progress! Ffion Edwards to sing at Newent Choral Society’s Spring Concert One of Britain’s most promising young singers is set to thrill music lovers in Newent. Young Welsh Soprano Ffion Edwards will perform the stunning Mozart motet 'Exsultate Jubilate' at Newent Choral Society’s Spring Concert on Saturday 24th March. Last year, Ffion (22) won the prestigious Geraint Morris Award for young soloists, to follow her first place at the National Eisteddfod of Wales in the Lieder solo category. She has since been invited to take part as a soloist in the 2018 Festival of Massed Choirs at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The motet, composed when Mozart was still in his teens, is a glorious piece of work and a favourite of sopranos around the world as it allows them to show a wide range and virtuosic ability. Ffion will sing the Mozart

masterpiece under the baton of another rising star on the Welsh and British music scene – Newent Society’s conductor Nia Llewelyn Jones. As well as inspiring the Newent choir with her work, Nia conducts the National Youth Choir of Wales and is singing development leader at Gloucester Cathedral. To continue the city and Welsh connection, Cathedral Director of Music Adrian Partington, one of Britain’s leading organists and conductor of the BBC National Chorus of Wales, will accompany the choral works, alongside a professional orchestra. The concert also includes three choral works by Franz Joseph Haydn, which the society singers have been rehearsing since the new year. The 'Te Deum' is a magnificent choral drama in three parts, originally a commission from Empress Marie Therese,

the wife of Franz I of Austria. Also on the programme is Haydn’s motet 'Insanae et Vanae Curae' and the concert will conclude with a performance of the composer’s acclaimed Nelson Mass, described as "arguably Haydn’s greatest single composition". The concert will take place at Newent School Hall on Saturday 24th March at 7.30pm. Admission is £12, with accompanied under 16-year-olds admitted free. Tickets can be reserved by calling 01989 750528.
