Mitcheldean is getting ready for its annual festival
Local legend Dick Brice will be playing at the festival. Photograph by Eden Tanner
The weekend of 19th - 21st July 2019 will see the usual fabulous mix of great performances – singing, dancing, poetry and storytelling – plus a full range of family entertainment at the Saturday fete, not to mention the annual Folk Walk and a beer festival run by the Bespoke Brewery. The event is free and everyone is welcome.
the community centre organised by the W.I., and a new “Mitcheldean’s Got Talent” show in the fete marquee. All this plus an early evening family party in the community centre followed by the evening dance, and of course the big concert with a great line-up of singers and entertainers in the parish church. The fun continues on the Sunday with a music and singing session in the White Horse, Jolter Press opening their doors again for a Forest dialect event, and of course, the Folk Walk singing songs around the local countryside (and country pubs!).
See www.mitcheldeanfestival.fod.uk for more details as the plans progress and mark 19th - 21st July in your diary – see you there!

Get out and about
If you are anything like me, you spent an awful lot of time during the last couple of months sat indoors in front of some kind of screen or device, however, thanks to the warmer temperatures and longer days, I feel more and more compelled to go out and embrace the wonderful outdoors.
I'm not the sportiest of people, the gym isn't really for me, but ask me to go on a walk and 9 times out of 10 I'm up for it. Walking is a great way to exercise - it helps you blow away the cobwebs (and burn off all those chocolate Easter eggs), and best of all - it's free! Whether you have a wander around your neighbourhood, visit the park or spend a day in the countryside, you can be sure to be doing your body a favour. If you get tired easily and need support while walking, check out Linden Leisure's fantastic range of walking and seat sticks (p.11).
Another great way to enjoy some exercise and fresh air is gardening. Whether you are pressure washing the patio, cutting the hedge or mowing the lawn, both your garden and your body will thank you for it, even if the latter may not feel like it straight away. You will also get a great sense of achievement and peace of mind - that is until it all grows back at least...
Finally, if you just fancy going out and enjoying yourself - there's a fantastic range of events and festivals taking place in and around the area this month, and if all these days out leave you feeling inspired and you enjoy writing, check out the Gloucestershire Writers' Network Competition on p.14.

Bring colour to your garden
The Garden Lady 01594 541118 or 07767 690009 Catherine uses her 26+ years of knowledge, skills and experience to create landscape magic, transforming your garden into a beautiful and practical oasis.
We love May for the start of the garden fiesta, the explosion of colour and the freshest of greens that no other month can match. It’s a long-awaited feeling of excitement. Winter is over and late frost worries have passed. From now on until the onset of autumn, we can enjoy flowers on a daily basis, experience vegetable gardens at their best, harvest lots of tasty produce and watch crowds of bees and butterflies.
Choose a rainbow of colours to make your spring garden pop and come alive with the boldest, brightest blooms around. Get to know and understand how colour in the garden works from spring to autumn. Use cornflowers, also known as bachelor’s buttons, to create a sea of cobalt blue. They are easy to grow, flower all summer long, and butterflies and bees adore them.
One of the easiest primulas to grow is the drumstick primula (Primula denticulata), which has thick stems and bare ball-shaped clusters of flowers in pink, purple or white before the new leaves develop. If you have a boggy, damp area surrounding a pond look at Candelabra primulas. They come with brilliant orange, yellow, red and even dark maroon flowers.
White flowers and silver leaves have a beautiful glow, especially in the evenings as they lighten up shady areas, sparkle in the moonlight and are perfect for sitting areas. They add romance, peace and elegance to your garden. Top tip: If you are using canes to stake perennials, cover the tip of each one with a rubber cap to avoid eye injuries. - Catherine Williams, The Garden Lady 4
AVAILABLE FOR: • Training on ‘How to maintain your garden’ • Solving problem areas & revamps • Talks & workshops for clubs/groups • Demonstrations & question time • Garden design & consultancy • Professional speaking & signing of her book Covering the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, Monmouth and Ross-on-Wye. Contact Catherine for a no obligation chat about how she can help you in your garden or speak at your event.

Short Story
The little things in life A short story written by Forest of Dean Magazine reader and local writer Geraldine Faulkner
Henry was having a bad day. Not only had he slept badly – really, he should not have had that second helping of Annie’s bread and butter pudding last night for tea – his new eating regime, ‘advised’ by his GP, meant eating a lot of new-fangled things like chickpeas, seeds and lentils. ‘Where is the pleasure in eating stuff like that?’ he complained to Annie. She had simply smiled at him. Over 40 years of marriage had taught her not to argue with Henry when he was in his ‘grumbly’ mood.
“The kettle has just boiled. Do you fancy a brew?” she asked knowing full well he would never say ‘no’ to a cuppa.
Morosely, he picked up the post from the kitchen table. “More bills, I suppose,” he muttered. Sure enough, the first envelope he opened was from their gas supplier informing Mr & Mrs Townsend that gas prices were going up in a few weeks’ time. The other letter was from the local newsagent with the bill for the daily paper they had delivered. 6
“You could cancel the newsagent’s delivery and walk down to the petrol station in Cinderford to buy your paper instead,” suggested Annie. “You were just saying the other day that you need more exercise.”
“And breathe in lots of traffic fumes while I’m about it,” he retorted, knowing his wife was right but refusing to admit it. Suddenly, he felt very sorry for himself. The world was out to get him – financially and gastronomically – and he was not going to stand for it. “I’m going to check the greenhouse,” he announced in as dignified manner as he could muster.
Annie smiled fondly as he left the kitchen. She knew full well he kept a packet of Hob Nobs in the greenhouse. Staring in the middle distance, she wondered what could be done to cheer up her husband. “Of course,” she said and picked up the phone. Henry opened the greenhouse door and grunted to himself as
he saw that the geraniums could do with a good watering. “Not long before I can plant you all out,” he told them. The soothing familiarity of filling the watering can, pottering along the shelves watering the geraniums and checking that his lemon tree had not dried out, gradually worked its magic. “I suppose it’s inevitable that gas prices go up,” he said to himself. “But I think I’ll go on the computer later to shop around.”
He then thought about Annie’s suggestion about walking to the petrol station to buy his daily newspaper. “I could take next door’s dog with me. Both of us could do with some exercise,” he added thinking of their neighbour’s obese spaniel.
All of a sudden, he heard the greenhouse door open behind him. “Granpa!” piped a well-known voice.
“Bless my soul,” exclaimed Henry spotting Rosie, his adored 6-year-old granddaughter, before opening his arms for a much-needed hug. The day had suddenly got better. “Fancy a Hob Nob?” he said.

Local charities join forces for Forest of Dean prostate cancer test
The Cotswolds Prostate Cancer Support Group charity and the Cheltenham and Severn Dean branch of Lions International are teaming up once again to organise a free public prostate cancer blood test, this time at Dene Magna School, Abenhall Road, Mitcheldean, GL17 0DU, on Tuesday 28th May. They've worked together successfully before, to make more people aware of prostate cancer. At their last test event, over 430 men were tested, and more than 40 cases were picked up as needing further investigation for prostate cancer, some of which led to prompt and possibly life-saving treatment. Prostate cancer's the most common cancer in men and accounts for around 11,000 deaths in the UK every year. One in eight men will get it, but the risks are even higher for men of African or Caribbean background or men with close family history of prostate cancer (father or brother).
It's not widely known that men over 50 can ask their doctor for a test, so not many do. The PSA blood test isn't a diagnosis, but it's a useful tool to tell whether further investigation for prostate cancer would be worthwhile. The Cotswolds Support Group suggests that men aged between 50 and 75 (or over 40 if a close blood relative has had prostate cancer) should certainly ask for a PSA test or come along to the free public PSA test between 6pm and 8.30pm on 28th May. The Cotswolds Support Group is volunteer-led by men who've all had prostate cancer, ably assisted by their partners, and works closely with the county's NHS urology team, and national cancer charities. Monthly meetings are held at the excellent Maggie's Centre in Cheltenham, often with an expert speaker. For more details see www.cotswolds prostatecancer.org or ring 07703 477391.

Health
May is National Walking Month National Walking Month is an annual campaign to promote the benefits of walking.
It is perhaps walking that is the most accessible exercise, available to all regardless of current levels of fitness or income.
Your health Walking gives your leg muscles and lungs a workout; reduces stress; helps you sleep; burns excess calories; and reduces your risk of osteoporosis, cancer, depression and Type 2 diabetes. Phew, that sounds so good it should be prescribed.
The NHS says even just a brisk daily 10-minute walk has many health benefits, counting towards your recommended 150 minutes of weekly exercise. A brisk pace is around 3 miles an hour – 10
if you’re relatively fit, you should still be able to talk, but not sing a song. The free NHS Active 10 app handily tells you when you’re walking fast enough and suggests ways to fit in more brisk walking. Particularly through the late spring and summer, walking outside will top-up your levels of Vitamin D which is good for your bone health and your immune system.
Be sociable – or get alone time Walking can be a chance to chat with your friends and family. Nordic walking classes, a Walking for Health walk, or a walking group such as the Ramblers (formerly the Ramblers Association) are ideal if you don’t have anyone to walk with. However, you may prefer to use walks as a chance for some time to yourself. You could listen to music which can help you get into a rhythm and walk faster.
If you are concerned about wearing headphones while you walk, look at AfterShokz Bone Conduction Headphones. These sit on bones on the sides of your head but not in your ears, meaning you can still hear traffic.
Raise money for a good cause For National Walking Month, the British Heart Foundation is promoting the Just Walk initiative to encourage you to raise money in an organised walk. Tying in with this is their Walk to School Week from the 16th to the 20th May, where they ask teachers, parents and children to put their best foot forward and walk to school each day. How and where to walk You can either set aside time for walking or just build it into your daily routine and
journeys. Could you get the family out for an after-dinner walk or take a weekend ramble that ends at a pub or restaurant?
• Wear supportive, suitable footwear. If you are walking to work, you could take a smarter pair of shoes with you to change into. • Stay hydrated. Always take a drink with you if you’re planning to walk for more than 20 minutes or it’s hot. • Always consider the terrain and the weather, especially if you’re heading off the beaten track. Do you need warm and/ or waterproof clothing, headgear and footwear? Do you have snacks, drinks, a first aid kit and a charged mobile phone? An internet search will return innumerable resources to help you both start and stick with it, not just for May but throughout the year.

Gloucestershire Writers’ Network Competition 2019
New festival to be added to Cheltenham's event calendar
Supported by The Times and The Sunday Times Cheltenham Literature Festival.
Do you write poetry or prose? Would you like to read your work at The Times and The Sunday Times Cheltenham Literature Festival in October? The 2019 Gloucestershire Writers’ Network Competition is now open for all writers of poetry and prose of 16 and over, who live, work or study in Gloucestershire. There are two prizes of £200, one for the best poem (of up to 50 lines) and one for the best piece of prose (of up to 750 words) and six runner-up prizes. The winners and runners-up will be invited to read at the Gloucestershire Writers’ Network Prize Winners event at the festival this October.
This year’s competition theme is ‘Numbers’ which you can explore as widely as you like. We are absolutely delighted to announce this year's judges. Not only are they both excellent at their own crafts and wonderful readers but lovely individuals whose expertise will be invaluable to those more experienced or new to writing. Prose Judge: Amanda Reynolds https://www.amandareynoldsauthor.com/ Poetry Judge: Stephen Daniels https://stephenkirkdaniels.com/

This will be followed by six days of events, including film screenings, director Q&As, master classes, panel discussions and talks by highly-respected film industry professionals and “name” celebrities.
On the guest list are, amongst others, Mike Leigh, director of Bleak Moments and Nuts in May; Carl Hunter, director of Sometimes Always Never; Josie Rourke, director of Mary Queen of Scots; legendary Enfant Terrible Steven Berkoff; Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran, writers of Birds of A Feather; Emma Samms of Dynasty fame; Stephen Cookson; Caroline Norbury MBE; and from Poland leading filmmakers Piotr Sobocinski Jr and Jan Komasa. Popular actor and local star Simon Pegg has agreed to be Patron of the festival.
Cheltenham International Film Festival will bring together films from all over the world in a competition judged by a prestigious jury and aims to introduce new audiences to the rich diversity of independent films and film-makers. For more information, please visit www.cheltfilm.com.

Auction Anecdote Our April sale featured the most exciting consignment of advertising and packaging antiques I have ever encountered. The house had been furnished like a museum with antique advertising signs, mirrors and shop display cabinets covering every wall from the hallway, through the kitchen, sitting room, bedrooms and even the bathroom. All the items were exceptional in both their desirability and condition with several rarities such as a pictorial enamel sign for the ‘Wellington Journal and Shrewsbury News’ and a ‘Hudson’s Soap’ enamel sign depicting a clock face to show the ‘We close at’ time. The selection of mirrors generally related to Cadbury’s and Fry’s Chocolate whilst the icing on the cake came in the form of two very attractive Ogden’s cigarette vending cabinets. Since this is a very popular collecting field we were confident demand would be strong for this outstanding collection but even then we were amazed by the strength of the bidding on sale day. Initially estimated at an overall total of £6,000/£8,000 we were just blown away by the final result of over £22,000. Many bidders probably went home sorely disappointed as they did not even get close to buying the items they had come for - although I think we all enjoyed the buzz and excitement of the moment. Top price of the day was £3,200 paid by an Irish telephone bidder for one of the cigarette cabinets whilst the Wellington Journal enamel sign made £1,650 and the Hudson’s Soap sign made £1,300. A large Victorian ‘Cadbury’s Chocolate’ mirror made £1,250 whilst a mirrored Cadbury’s shop display wall cabinet made £980. Smiths’ next antiques sale is on the 10th May and has a special section for Fine Silver & Jewellery whilst the sale on the 14th June features Clocks and Watches. Please call 01531 821776 or visit www.smithsnewentauctions.co.uk for entry details. - Written by Rita Kearsey Manager of Smiths Auction Room at Newent

Bringing back traditional skills A social enterprise is encouraging people to revive traditional, landbased skills in the Forest of Dean.
The Rewild Project runs Heritage Craft and Edible Forest workshops subsidised through the Heritage Lottery Funded Foresters' Forest programme. Heritage Craft Skills workshops include green woodworking, woodland skills, textiles and natural dyeing, willow weaving, organic traditional tanning and blacksmithing. The workshops tap into the Forest’s rich rural heritage, and it’s hoped that they will preserve and revitalise the ancient skills for new generations of people living in the Forest of Dean.
Edible Forest Skills workshops teach people how to manage traditional organic, perennial, edible food systems in back gardens, fields or community spaces. Workshops include designing edible spaces, pruning fruit trees and propagation, as well as fermenting and foraging. Scott Baine from the Rewild Project said: “Many traditional skills are sadly in danger of being lost in our modern world, and we want to change that. The Forest is home
to many old or neglected orchards, for example, but people can feel that they lack the skills or confidence to know what to do with them. “It can be hugely rewarding to learn how to grow your own food, or make something practical and beautiful.
“We want to inspire people, bring them together and build confidence. Traditional skills and knowledge can make our communities stronger, healthier and more resilient. They are part of our heritage and belong to all of us.” The Rewild Project has worked with the Forestry Commission so that courses can be run in the Forest from a sustainably refurbished old forest workers’ shed, known as Kensley Shed.
A variety of experienced instructors will be teaching workshops throughout the spring and summer. To find out more about the Rewild Project or to book a workshop, visit www.therewildproject.com. Heritage Craft Skills and Edible Forest are two of 38 projects in the Foresters’ Forest Heritage Lottery Funded programme. Find out more about Foresters’ Forest at www.forestersforest.uk.

l Lethargy l Seizures
Exercising your dog in the summer It’s important to avoid strenuous exercise when it’s hot outside and to be vigilant for respiratory distress or any other indications that your dog is struggling to deal with the heat.
THE DANGERS OF HEATSTROKE Summer can be a great time to help your dog become fit and healthy, particularly if they’ve become a little sluggish over the winter months. Warm weather and long days are made for dog walking, but is it too hot for your dog to exercise? Helping your dog avoid heatstroke Heatstroke is a serious health issue for dogs that can affect their internal organs and cause catastrophic damage very quickly. It’s a condition you need to watch out for in summer, particularly when exercising your dog. Controlling their environment when exercising is crucial during the summer – only walking them in the early morning or late evening is a good way to reduce the chances of heat exhaustion and heatstroke.
Take plenty of water with you as dogs can become dehydrated very quickly in the heat and try to walk or exercise in shaded areas so they have a chance to cool down. Summer requires additional vigilance when exercising your dog, but you can keep them safe and healthy with a little extra care.

Too Old to Be Behind the Wheel?
At what age should you stop driving? The recent accident involving the 97-year-old Duke of Edinburgh brought this question into sharp focus. Royalty or commoner, it must be a wrench to give up your licence, not just because of the loss of independence, but because it’s a sure sign that age is catching up on you.
Every time there is an incident involving an elderly driver there are calls for an age cap to be placed on holding a driving licence. Equally, stories are trotted out by those wishing freedom of the road claiming that
Estuary Oils Your Leading Fuels & Lubricants Supplier
they have an aged 90+ relative who regularly drives and is safer on the road than many 20-somethings.
What can’t be ignored is that, with age,our reactions slow down, our eyesight and hearing are impaired and we are prone to restricted movement. But, as a counterbalance, older drivers take fewer risks, don’t tend to speed and have more experience. So, a one-sizefits-all cap to holding a licence will not be a universally accepted solution. My stance is that there should not be a statutory age-limit to holding a driving licence, but there should be a system in place that, when you reach 70, requires you to do more than ‘self-certify’ every three years, that you are okay to drive.
Of course, with the imminent arrival of driverless cars on our roads, this debate could well be null-and-void – at least until the annual London-to-Brighton vintage car run…
